Editor’s note

Summer’s here and the time is right for... ...QUITE A LOT, ACTUALLY. “Sumer is icumen in,” an unknown medieval poet once wrote – and indeed, summer has arrived and many of us are on the verge of taking their well-deserved holiday (although, by the time you read this you may be on full throttle again…). Still, before you go there are a few things I’d like to draw your attention to and, lo and behold, they’re all in this new issue of Offshore Industry. First of all you’ll find a preview of SPE Offshore Europe 2015, which will be held in Aberdeen from 8 to 11 September. The organization has done their best to make the combined exposition and conference bigger and busier than ever. This year’s theme will be “How To Inspire The Next Generation”, and 1,500 suppliers will be showing their cost-saving and production-enhancing technologies on the exhibition floor. The conference will consist of a keynote programme and a technical programme, both free to attend. New is the Deepwater Zone, in which you can discover advanced subsea, seabed and floating production hardware and expertise from more than thirty established suppliers, plus fifteenplus hours of presentations. Further, there’s an article on the arrival of the gigantic FPSO Goliat in a Norwegian fjord after a 63-day journey from South Korea on board this other giant, the Dockwise Vanguard. In the second half of 2015 Eni Norge intends to start with the production of oil from the world’s northern-most oil field – a milestone in the history of oil exploration. This issue’s Ship Report is about the seismic research support vessel Tess, which has recently been delivered by Shipyard Trico in Rotterdam to IJmuiden-based Van Laar Maritime. Tess is Van Laar’s first new-built ship – a milestone for the company. Another vessel we discuss is the offshore wind farm support vessel Trearddur Bay. This aluminium catamaran is fitted with the Voith Linear Jet propulsion system – a world first – and while the vessel’s size is impressive, what really gives her the edge is her speed and efficiency. We also give you articles on the new Trelleborg microspheres, in which you can read how empty spaces can fortify structures to make them stronger without burdening them with weight, and on the Auxilium Offshore AUX model, which demonstrates how beneficial it nowadays is to share information between everyone working in the offshore business, even between competitors. And last but not least we have something on the Wintershall Maria Field project and the Baker Hughes’ well intervention project in the Caspian Sea. RON VAN UUM | EDITOR RON@YNFPUBLISHERS.COM

NEWS IN BRIEF OSI FEATURE

Last foundation pile installed for Westermeerwind wind park.

Westermeerwind Wind Park On 23 May the Van Oord/Mammoet joint venture drove the last of the 48 offshore wind turbine foundation piles into the bed of the IJsselmeer, the Netherlands, which completed the foundation work for the Westermeerwind wind park. The construction continued six days a week, but as the piles were only driven during the daytime, the schedule provided for driving one pile per day. On 23 May the crew succeeded – for

the fourth time – in driving two piles within twelve hours, an exceptional performance in the offshore wind industry. The installation of the 44km of cables between the turbines and the shore will be next. The first power is expected to reach land in August and the entire wind park will be completed in February 2016.

Windmill structures and hydraulics

Rometal has recently delivered and installed windmill structures and hydraulics for the Gode Wind offshore wind farm – from detailed engineering right up to the final offshore installation. Because of the large volume and tight timeframe of the project, the company handled the production in their two plants. As Rometal is currently having all disciplines in house, they can offer their clients one point of contact, low-risk services, and one QHSE policy. In their own words, they proved once again to be able to perform in accordance with the special customer and class requirements.

Barge Master’s motion compensation used for Malampaya installation Using its BM-T700 motion compensation platform, Barge Master successfully supported the installation of the permanent connection bridge (151 tonnes, 42.5 x 3.5 x 3.5 metres) for the Shell Malampaya production platform in the Philippines. Barge Master was contracted by Boskalis to perform this delicate task. The platform significantly increased the reliability and predictability of this critical operation by eliminating roll, pitch and heave motions of the vessel on its load. The BM-T700 is a modular motion compensation platform with a payload capacity of 700 tonnes, also able to accommodate for a crane with an average capacity of 160 tonnes at a 12-metre radius.

NEWS IN BRIEF Rederij Groen takes delivery of 7-Stars

Heerema Marine Contractors

On 29 April, in the Dutch harbour town Scheveningen, Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam, part of Damen Shipyard Group, concluded a productive chapter in its history with the delivery of the 7-Stars, a 35-metre offshore chaser, to offshore support service provider Rederij Groen. The 7-Stars is the last in a series of three identical vessels delivered to Rederij Groen. The vessel will join Rederij Groen’s fleet of almost thirty vessels, which includes sister vessels 7-Oceans and 7-Seas. The three vessels, designed in close cooperation with Rederij Groen and their customer, mark a milestone in offshore support vessel construction.

Heerema Offshore Services has recently signed a Letter of Intent regarding the engineering and construction of a new semi-submersible crane vessel with Jurong Shipyard. Heerema will equip its new vessel with two cranes of 10,000-tonne lifting capacity each. The dual cranes, designed and under construction by Huisman Equipment, provide heavy-lifting Photo courtesy of Heerema Marine Contractors capacity to install and Mr William Gu (left), GM Offshore of Jurong Shipyard, remove offshore facilities and Mr Jan-Pieter Klaver, CEO of Heerema Marine in deep water. The crane Contractors, signing the LOI vessel will be selfpropelled with a transit speed of 10 knots. Power will be generated by means of dual-fuel engines: MGO and LNG. With a length of 214m and a width of 97.5m, the crane vessel will be the world’s largest. The reinforced work deck will increase efficiency when installing or removing offshore facilities.

Holmatro delivers 280-ton cylinders for Pioneering Spirit The lifting system of the world’s largest heavy-lift ship Pioneering Spirit will be fitted with 52 Holmatro Photo courtesy of Holmatro cylinders with a 280-ton lifting capacity each and fitted with adjustable saddles. The cylinders are supplied with high-grade surface treatments, which will protect them for the next 25 years. The Pioneering Spirit was built to dismantle, install and transport complete drilling platforms. The sixteen topside lifting system (TLS) beams belonging to the hoisting system lift and support the drilling platform during these operations. An extra load can be exerted on the inner bearing structures of the beams.

NEWS IN BRIEF NDC inaugurates new jack-up rigs

Lankhorst’s moorings for Brazilian FPSO

National Drilling Company (NDC) has recently marked the inauguration of its new state-ofthe-art jack-up drilling rigs Shuwehat and Butinah in Sharjah, Photo courtesy of NCD UAE. The two new rigs raise the number of new offshore rigs to six in a series of eight similar units being acquired by NDC and manufactured in the UAE by Lamprell. The rigs have been built as per the Cameron LeTourneau Super 116E (Enhanced) Class design and are suitable for ADNOC and ADMA deep gas wells. NDC’s partnership with Lamprell to build offshore jack-up rigs in the UAE has made the country the first and only country in MENA Region capable of building critical engineering, high-tech oil and gas rigs.

Lankhorst Euronete Brazil has completed the delivery of polyester mooring lines and thimbles for the FPSO Cidade De Itaguaí offshore Brazil. The spread mooring system comprises 24 legs arranged in four groups of six legs per corner. Each mooring line contains three 959-metre polyester Cabral 512 rope segments and steel roulette thimbles. In total Lankhorst has supplied 75,000m of ultra-deep-water Cabral 512 rope to permanently moor the FPSO in a water depth of almost 2,300m. Scheduled to begin production in 2016, the FPSO is designed to process 150,000 barrels of oil and 280 million cubic feet of gas per day. She has a storage capacity of 1.6 million barrels of total Photo courtesy of Lankhorst Ropes fluids.

Two new Eversendai Offshore construction jack-up vessels Kongsberg was selected to deliver a complete Electro, Instrument & Telecom (EIT) propulsion, safety, automation and dynamic-positioning package for two new Gusto NG-2500X DP II offshore construction jack-up vessels worth NOK 125 million. MODIFYING THE ORIGINAL

Tess SHIPYARD TRICO IN ROTTERDAM

HAS RECENTLY DELIVERED A SEISMIC RESEARCH SUPPORT VESSEL (SRSV) TO IJmuiden-based Van Laar Maritime. The SRSV took approximately four years to develop, but on 10 April 2015 Tess was officially named and handed over to her owner. WORDS BY RON VAN UUM

Danish design

>>

Danish shipbuilder and -designer Vestvaerftet, who specialise in building and designing fishing vessels ranging from 10 to 35m in length, designed the ship. The design is characterised by a trawler-like round-bilge hull with an oversized bulbous bow. Sea keeping, even at low speeds, plays an essential part in this design. An SRSV is often sailing at no more than 3 knots in close proximity to the main seismic research vessel. Her tasks include clearing the path for the mother vessel of fishnets, buoys or vessels at a distance, and as an emergencytowing vessel for the mother ship in case of engine failure. As Tess contains a wet lab on deck, she is also able to perform minor research tasks.

Van Laar Maritime Ship owner Van Laar Maritime owns a fleet of thirty vessels and is operating mainly in the North Sea and Baltic Sea for clients varying from geotechnical surveyors to offshore wind installers. Most of Van Laar Maritime’s fleet consists of former fishing vessels that have been converted to chase, guard and support vessels. Tess is their first new-build ship. Van Laar Maritime, who has

been in the maritime business since 1925, have run their own ships since 1965. Since 2005 the company has been actively involved in the offshore industry. The company chose Shipyard Trico for their flexibility and good value proposition. The fact that a second vessel was ordered at Trico before the first one was even completed demonstrates the good working relationship between the two companies. There are ship owners who want to be actively involved in every step of the building process of their ships and this was very much the case in the building of Tess. Van Laar Maritime was heavily involved in the procurement process and made

1 4 | O S I 2 0 1 5 | Vo l u m e 8 | Issue 4

Tess.indd 14

significant changes to the original Vestvaerftet design. They were also present in the shipyard almost every day resulting in the ship being built exactly according to their wishes.

Modifications Quite a few modifications were made to the original design. The most striking was the lengthening of the vessel by 2.5 metres early in the process to create additional space on deck and inside the vessel. As slow-speed manoeuvring is such an important feature of this ship, the propulsion installation is diesel-electric with two Veth-manufactured 550kW azimuthing

thrusters. Each thruster is equipped with fixed-pitch propellers and a nozzle to optimise the bollard pull. Power is supplied by three Cummins 440kW diesel generators that are installed in a very spacious engine room. To control the speed of the thrusters, several Vacon water-cooled variablefrequency drives have been installed in a space between the engine room and the thruster room. Another addition is the installation of an air-cooled harbour generator inside a room on the main deck. Technically this is not an emergency diesel generator as such, but it has its own fuel tank and independent cooling system. This smaller generator –

www. o f f s h o r e - i n d u s t r y.eu

Tess.indd 15

with a capacity of 90kW – is more suitable to supply the light hotel load when the ship is at her home berth than the 440kW main generators located below. Tess’s hull design is the perfect example of seaworthiness: a high freeboard and massive bulbous bow up front, bilge keels on a round-bilged hull and a wide pram-type stern. At a speed of eight knots, the hourly fuel consumption is a mere 140 litres. Tess’ maximum speed ahead is 12.6 knots, but even when sailing astern she is able to achieve a speed of 11 knots. Her bollard pull is an impressive 15 tonnes. The steel structure was built in Vlissingen and then towed to Trico’s outfitting quay in Rotterdam

for the remainder of the construction and finishing work.

Engine cooling Picture the engine-cooling system on Tess as a labyrinth of U-shaped profiles welded onto the exterior shell. Fresh water is circulated through these ribs for the purpose of cooling the generators and the variable-frequency drives. This relatively simple cooling system avoids the use of box coolers in external sea chests – which are prone to fouling – and keeps seawater out of the internal pipework. Only the chiller from the air-conditioning system and the Veth azimuthing pods use seawater for

cooling through a saltwater/freshwater heat exchanger. As the thruster motors are water-cooled, the thruster room does not need much ventilation and can even operate for lengthy periods with the ventilation openings shut.

Serviceability A lot of attention has been paid to serviceability. The thrusters can be lifted through a deck hatch and exchanged while the vessel is in the water. The same goes for the generators. During sailing there is sufficient redundancy in the system to prevent a complete breakdown. The vessel will normally be sailing at 3 to 5 knots on a single generator set. In certain areas space has been reserved for future retrofits. For instance, a sewage treatment unit is currently not required, but the pipes and facilities are already there for a simple and quick installation when sewage treatment becomes mandatory.

More space For the deck gear on the foredeck, Van Laar Maritime opted for using anchor cables on a horizontal windlass instead of anchor chains deposited in anchor lockers below deck. This decision proved a sensible one, as it created a lot of space below deck so that the cold-storage rooms and galley could be

moved forward. Also, an extra cabin can be installed in the future, depending on its intended use. Currently there are two fourperson cabins on the lower deck, intended for extra occupants such as researchers, surveyors or client representatives. Tess’s own crew of six are housed in four double and two single cabins on the main and upper deck, with a lot of spare bunks to increase the sleeping capacity when needed. A V-SAT Internet connection allows the crew to stay connected and entertained, even during long periods working offshore. The engine room funnel housing the exhaust lines and ventilations shafts is located on the starboard side to provide excellent visibility over the port side. Inside the wheelhouse, a dedicated manoeuvring control desk is fitted on the port side, surrounded by windows with windscreen wipers. Just like the exterior profile, the interior of the wheelhouse is very reminiscent of a combat vessel. The rest of the accommodation was completed in

traditional nautical style. The aft deck is covered with non-slip compound and features a quick-release towing hook.

Praise for Tess Shipyard Trico’s Managing Director John van der Wijgaart comments: “Tess was the first unlimited seagoing vessel built at Trico. Offshore support is an area in which we would like to grow, and we’re already building a second multi-purpose supply vessel for the same client.” And Paul van Laar of Van Laar Maritime concludes: “With our new-built vessel Tess, we start a new chapter in ninety years of maritime history.” i. www.vanlaarmaritime.com i. www.tricobv.nl

Wintershall submits PDO for Maria Field ON 5 MAY, WINTERSHALL, THE LARGEST INTERNATIONALLY ACTIVE GERMAN CRUDE OIL AND NATURAL GAS PRODUCER, AND ITS PARTNERS, SUBMITTED A PLAN FOR DEVELOPMENT & OPERATION (PDO) FOR THE MARIA FIELD IN THE NORWEGIAN SEA TO THE NORWEGIAN MINISTRY of Petroleum & Energy. This is the first time Wintershall, as operator of the field, has submitted a PDO for a Norwegian development. “

W

e are well on track on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Making this investment decision to bring our own discovery Maria into production demonstrates our long-term commitment to Norway. Norway is a core region to us. And now Wintershall is moving its successful exploration portfolio towards development and production”, said Martin Bachmann, Member of the Wintershall Board of Executive Directors. “We continue our growth strategy on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.” The planned development solution for the Maria field involves two subsea templates located on the ocean floor tied back to several host platforms in the area. “By applying this innovative and costeffective solution we make the development and production of the field possible – even in a challenging oil price environment. We are continuing to invest in profitable projects in our core business and core areas,” said Mr Bachmann. “This solution has clear benefits. By utilising the existing infrastructure in the Haltenbanken area of the Norwegian Sea, the Maria partners have selected the most sustainable solution to realize the potential of the field,” added Bernd Schrimpf, Managing Director of Wintershall Norge. Investments in the Maria development are estimated at around NOK 15.3 billion, including development drilling. Recoverable reserves of the field are estimated around 180 million barrels of oil equivalent, of which the majority is oil. The planned

production start-up for Maria is end 2018, and the estimated production period is 23 years.

Existing Connections

Under the selected development solution, the Maria reservoir will be linked via a subsea tieback to three production platforms. The Maria well stream will go to the first platform for processing while supply of water for injection into the reservoir will come from the second platform and lift gas will be provided form third one via the Tyrihans D field subsea template. Processed oil will be shipped to the Åsgard field for storage and offloading to shuttle tankers. Gas will be exported to shore via pipeline to the Åsgard Transport gas line.

Well on Track

Wintershall has significantly expanded its activities in Norway since the founding of the Norwegian subsidiary Wintershall Norge in the middle of the last decade. With around fifty licenses – more than half of these as operator – Wintershall is already one of the largest license holders in Norway.

Subsea Contract

On 8 May, Wintershall further announced the award of a major pipeline and subsea construction contract (PSC) contract to Subsea 7, a global contractor in seabed-to-surface engineering. The contract is worth approximately

USD 300 million. It has been assigned with the other Maria licence partners. The award is the latest contract in the execution of the Maria development further strengthening Wintershall’s position as an operator in the subsea arena. The PSC contract includes a comprehensive engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) agreement for three major pipeline systems linking the Maria development as a subsea tieback to existing infrastructure in the Norwegian Sea. Subsea 7 will also install the subsea production system and control umbilicals procured by Wintershall Norge through its contact with FMC in October 2014. “With this contract, we are moving ahead with the execution of our first-operated development in Norway. Maria underlines our position as a growing operator and we are continually building our expertise in this field. This is the second major subsea contract awarded by Wintershall for the Maria project and underlines our commitment to developing fields on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Wintershall sees future potential for more developments of this kind in Norway, which is becoming a centre of excellence of these kinds of activities,” said Mr Schrimpf.

Three elements of the contract

The PSC contract contains the three elements. First, there is the EPCI contract for pipeline systems, which entails that Subsea 7 will design, procure and install three pipelines linking Maria to the surrounding fields. These comprise the 26km production flow line, with direct electrical heating (DEH) cable connected to the Kristin platform, the 46km plastic-lined water injection pipeline from Heidrun, and the 22km pipeline that will supply lift gas to Maria from Åsgard via the Tyrihans subsea field. Secondly, there is the installation of SPS structures. Subsea 7 will install the subsea production system (SPS) structures supplied by FMC Technologies subsidiary, FMC Kongsberg Subsea AS. This included two integrated templates, subsea manifolds and the production riser base at Kristin. And thirdly, there is the installation of control umbilicals. Subsea 7 will install the static control umbilicals supplied by FMC Kongsberg Subsea between Kristin and the Maria templates.

The Maria Field Circa 200 kilometres from the Trondheim coastline, Maria is situated on the Halten Terrace in the Norwegian Sea. The field is located about 20km east of the Kristin field and 45km from the Heidrun field. The discovery is expected to produce around 180 million barrels of oil equivalent, of which the majority is oil. Wintershall Norge is the operator with a 50 percent share. The other licensees are Petoro AS with 30 percent and Centrica Resources (Norge) AS with 20 percent.

floated off and relaunched. This summer the Goliat platform, which is operated and partly owned by Eni Norge, will be towed to the Goliat field at exactly 53 miles (85 km) northwest of its permanent mooring, close to where the Norwegian Sea meets the Barents Sea. There she will be moored with fourteen anchors in 400m-deep waters. Her permanent location will be 140 miles closer to the pole than Russia’s Prirazlomnoye platform in the eastern Pechora Sea, which is the only other offshore rig currently producing oil in Arctic waters. The Goliat platform, with a diameter of 117m, will be connected to 22 wells: eleven oil wells, nine water injection wells and two gas injection wells. The installation has a storage capacity of one million barrels of oil. In the second half of 2015, Eni Norge intends to start with the production of oil from the world’s northern-most oilfield.

History

In 2009 the Norwegian government gave its approval to the Goliat project for development and operation. The contract for subsea production systems was awarded to Aker Subsea, and the contract for flow lines, risers and subsea installation went to Technip Norge. In 2010 the building contract for the FPSO was given to Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea. The subsea cable contract went to ABB AB Anchor Winches, and the mooring equipment to Aker Pusnes. The oil offloading system was given to APL Norge and the onshore transformer station went to Siemens. In 2011 Lankhorst Ropes was awarded the contract for the polyester mooring-line segments. The marine operations and FPSO installation contracts were granted to DOF and the time charter party for two shuttle tankers went to Knutsen Shuttle Tankers. In 2012 the subsea templates were installed and the subsea flow lines and umbilicals were fitted. Ten subsea production trees were delivered and the FPSO hull was assembled. In addition, thirty local fishing vessels were contracted for emergency standby readiness and the new-build

That same year the transformation stations were transported to the Goliat field and the living-quarter module was lifted into place. 2014 saw the installation of the electrical power cable from shore to the Goliat field. In addition, two new depots for oil clean-up equipment were constructed and the Goliat platform was prepared and tested in Ulsan, South Korea. Last February the Goliat started her voyage from Ulsan and set sail for Norway on board the Dockwise Vanguard, the world’s largest heavy-lift vessel. In April the Goliat arrived in Hammerfest. Eni Norge’s intends to tow out the platform to the Goliat field and prepare it for oil production in the second half of 2015 – this marks the start of a new era with the first oilfield in the Barents Sea in production. The Goliat FPSO is designed to meet the high standards of in-built safety and equipped to adapt to the climatic conditions of the Barents Sea. The Goliat oilfield, which has a water depth of circa 400m, is the first oilfield to be developed in the Barents Sea and sets the industry standard as activity migrates ever further north.

Tailored for the Arctic

The Sevan 1000 concept – which the Goliat was designed after – is specialised for operations under the challenging conditions encountered in the Barents Sea and introduces new winterization systems, among other things. It is also equipped to meet the strict environmental requirements stipulated for operations in the Barents Sea. The selection of the Sevan concept meant that Sevan Marine became the contractor for the Goliat project and Sevan subsequently granted a license to Eni for the use of the Sevan 1000 FPSO concept on the Goliat field. The concept is based on Sevan’s proprietary technology and has an oil production capacity of 100,000 barrels per day, a gas production of 3.9 million Sm3 per day and an oil storage capacity of 1 million barrels. The Goliat has been specifically designed for environmentally friendly operations and energy recovery. Electrification from shore will provide reduced emission of CO2. The oil containment system with segregated ballast tanks and non-contact between oil and

water will prevent the release of polluted ballast water into the sea. Ballast tanks in the sides and bottom area protect the oil containment system. The specially designed winterization solution will provide good working conditions for the crew. Eni Norge is the operator on the field with an ownership of 65 percent, while Statoil has an ownership of 35 percent. Eni Norge claims to attach considerable importance to proper oil spill contingency measures in connection with exploration, development and operations linked to the Goliat oilfield. The principal aim is to combat any oil spill as close as possible to the point of discharge using sea-going equipment which the industry has access to via the Norwegian Clean-Seas Association for Operating Companies. The Goliat FPSO consists of a circular facility containing a processing plant, oil storage capacity and accommodation facilities. Produced water will be re-injected into the reservoir. Produced oil will undergo interim storage on the facility prior to onward transport by shuttle tankers to the market. As stated earlier, the reservoir drainage strategy will include water and gas injection employing a total of eight well templates with 22 wells. Twelve of these will be producers, while seven will be used for water injection and three for gas injection. Several vessels – all equipped with infrared cameras and oil-detecting radar

– will be permanently stationed in the area close to the oilfield. The platform itself will utilize power supplies from land via a subsea electric cable, combined with energy generated on board the facility.

Costs

The entire Goliat project involves circa USD 6 billion in direct investment, and further annual operational expenses are budgeted to approximately USD 130 million. The Goliat field is expected to be in production for at least fifteen years, but could be considerably prolonged as the project gains better knowledge of the reservoir, or new discoveries are made. i. www.eninorge.com i. www.sevanmarine.com

AUXILIUM OFFSHORE

Optimizing

THE OFFSHORE OPERATION Fleur Loef, Managing Director of Auxilium Offshore, believes that new times lie ahead and in these times there is no room for conservative ideas on who fits in the offshore business and who doesn’t. Not everybody needs to have the exact same technical background. Professional ability is not just what is taught – it already slumbers within a person, but needs to be awakened. Talent, character, understanding, empathy and enthusiasm are qualities that will bring organizations and society much further. “This is where our future lies,” says Ms Loef. PHOTOS COURTESY OF AUXILIUM OFFSHORE.

I

n 2013 Ms Loef took over the general management of Auxilium Offshore and she has been steadily implementing the company’s long-term strategy ever since. “The thing is to make a difference through innovations, combined with building a worldwide network. This allows us to bring the best team together for each specific project. Because our people,” says Ms Loef, “are our most valuable asset.” Auxilium Offshore, founded in 2010, provides project management and consultancy services for the development and customisation of marine assets and mission equipment – ROVs, trenchers, saturation and air dive systems, pipeline and cable installation equipment, etc. From their new office in the Dutch town of Zaltbommel along the river Waal – one of the busiest shipping routes in the Netherlands – they cater to clients all over the world. “We are an independent company that’s highly client-focussed and we always take a personal approach,” says Ms Loef. “We are here to shake up the traditional manner of doing business in the offshore sector. We want to unburden our clients by applying our extensive knowledge of marine assets and related mission equipment. And, of course, by optimizing the offshore operation.”

Offshore to assist them on a new project mainly because of the people they assigned to the task. “Fleur has brought the best team together with the extensive and up-to-date knowledge that is required to make this project a success,” says Haico Halbesma, CEO of Oceanteam. Lex van Doorn, Managing Director van RentOcean, adds: “But she doesn’t only look at a person’s professional capacities, she also aims for a good fit in

personality, enthusiasm and communicating skills. All these qualities are very important when you are working so closely together for such a long time. Nevertheless, it’s all too often overlooked.” For a lot of companies it is a major relief to be able to focus on their own core business and leave the more specialist tasks into the hands of independent developers like Auxilium Offshore. However, this does take a lot of trust and also a shift in perception. Innovations are not kept from other parties in the industry. On the contrary, after consultation and in a transparent way, they are increasingly shared. As Ms Loef puts it: “More and more have I come to realise that with the rapid developments in the offshore business, a new approach on how we operate is necessary to keep up with the changing demands of our industry.”

Sharing knowledge

Auxilium Offshore develops and customises all sorts of trenchers.

3 8 | O S I 2 0 1 5 | Vo l u m e 8 | Issue 4

Auxillium Offshore.indd 38

Ms Loef continues: “Sharing knowledge makes the entire offshore industry more efficient. And efficiency is what is needed in offshore oil and gas extraction, where the current oil price makes it very challenging for oil companies to generate profits. In order to stay ahead in the game, we must determine what the latest developments are and how we can implement them. At Auxilium Offshore we are facing this

IMF & SURF challenge, for example by focussing on optimising our inspection, repair and maintenance (IRM) activities, as well as on our subsea umbilical, riser and flowline (SURF) operations.” IRM is an essential part of the offshore operation, and if it is done right it can be used to maximise the economic returns from an offshore field. “Because of our independent position and our willingness to share knowledge, we deliver a substantial added value for each party within the industry,” explains Loef. “By constantly innovating on equipment, combining functions within one system and making sure that these functions are operated by skilled professionals, we optimise the subsea operation. Tailoring your services for each client saves everyone a lot of money.” The same thing goes for the SURF operations that Auxilium Offshore deals with. By constantly sharing their knowledge of laying systems and by using the latest offshore installation vessels, the company saves contractors a lot of time on making their offshore field operational. In this regard Auxilium Offshore is more than satisfied with the strong partnership they have with sister companies Offshore Independents and IRM Systems, who possess highly specific engineering knowledge on SURF and IRM activities. i. www.auxiliumoffshore.com

Auxilium Offshore Working Model Before Auxilium Offshore starts on a new project, they describe it in terms of their in-house-developed Auxilium Offshore Working Model. This model considers not only a person’s professional expertise but also to this person’s personality. The idea behind the Auxilium Offshore Working Model is to make transparency possible by breaking down each project into three levels. Subsequently, each level is divided into different phases that are constantly reviewed (see graphic depiction left).

WELL INTERVENTION

Single-Trip Perforating Solutions Using a traditional method of perforating a highly deviated zone requires use of e-line tractors, Mr Smith explains. Based on the 300-metre interval that had to be shot, this entails sixteen separate runs. “Because we were using coiled tubing – which handles bigger loads – we were able to do it in one run,” said Mr Smith. The system to which he refers runs in conjunction with Baker Hughes intelligent coiled-tubing services and is trademarked as the SnapShot live-well deployment perforating system. It offers significant advantages in terms of costefficiency, with the work being carried out in less time. There are also health and safety benefits. As Mr Smith points out: “This method helps to enable safer operations because you are not recovering potentially live guns from a well sixteen times. Every time you go into the hole and bring the guns back out after perforating, personnel can be exposed to unnecessary risk if some of the charges didn’t fully detonate. So, by doing the work in one run you can reduce safety risks at the surface.”

Tight Planning

This particular scope of work required in-depth planning and tight project management – particularly with the operator’s requirement for a fast execution. “The project was

www. o f f s h o r e - i n d u s t r y.eu

Baker Hughes.indd 43

logistically challenging because we had to manufacture a lot of the equipment from scratch in a very short timeframe and then test it when it arrived in Azerbaijan.”

Maximum Productivity

Mr Smith: “As a result of skilled planning, we were able to reduce nonproductive time to only four hours for the entire operation. This is very good considering the job itself took longer than a week – and we were going into it with a lot of unknowns.” One of the main unknowns was that perforating could potentially lead to formation collapse. Adds Mr Smith: “We put a contingency plan in place and used an improved disconnect mechanism that would help us recover the coiled tubing if the formation did in fact collapse in on the wellbore. To reduce the likelihood of needing these contingencies, we used pre-job modelling software to accurately predict the pressure response during perforating, and the job went off without a hitch.”

Hydraulic Back-Up

One of the firsts of this new SnapShot system is that it allows a better means of starting the operation, with increased redundancy. Says Mr Smith: “Historically, if you wanted to have an electrical firing system through coiled tubing, you had to run e-line cable through the tubing – and

that’s quite a large cable. In the last four to five years, technology has come on and now we’re running a very small cable – just 3 mm across. It’s almost invisible in the pipe. The advantage is you can drop a ball through the coiled tubing to activate tools.” Additionally, the system features a hydraulic firing mechanism as back-up tool. “Using the new intelligent coiled-tubing system in combination with the firing system was an advantage because if the electrical system hadn’t fired, we’d have been able to fire it hydraulically which, again, reduces safety risks at surface.”

Future Prospects

The project had a successful outcome, allowing the well to commence production. It is in its early days and the results are still being analysed. However, Mr Smith is confident that the method has a future. “I think we will see more wells opened this way, particularly given current market conditions in the oil industry. Applications like this are more attractive because if you have a problem with a well, you can go in and open up another zone without spending lots of time and money.” i. www.bakerhughes.com

MARITIME INNOVATION

FIRST BOAT FITTED WITH VOITH LINEAR JET

Trearddur Bay MASTER OF SPEED AND EFFICIENCY ANTONY ROBSON, CAPTAIN OF THE OFFSHORE WIND FARM SUPPORT VESSEL TREARDDUR BAY, IS IN AWE OF HIS NEW vessel. “It’s completely different to anything already out there. It’s not a prop boat, it’s not a jet boat – but, given what we need, it drives better than either.” WORDS BY RON VAN UUM PHOTOS COURTESY OF ALUMINIUM MARINE CONSULTANTS

A

t 21m long, this 7m beam support catamaran is a world first, says Rob Stewart of the vessel’s builder Aluminium Marine Consultants (AMC). With a build of this significance the team at AMC have gained a wealth of industry knowledge as well as the experience required to carry the construction to successful completion. To date, the company has produced over thirty aluminium wind farm catamarans.

Exceptional speed

Mr Stewart explains that the build of the Trearddur Bay, which was commissioned by Turbine Transfers, has meant close cooperation between AMC, Turbine Transfers, BMT and Voith. Although the BMT Nigel Gee design had been tailored specifically to take the new

MARITIME INNOVATION linear jets, putting it all together was a challenge. Mr Stewart: “As with all things new, especially with an innovative build like this, you are always going to have some tweaks between paper and cutting metal.” While the vessel’s size is impressive, what really gives Trearddur Bay its edge is her speed, considering that a wind farm service vessel this size often needs to keep a pace between 25 to 35 knots. The Trearddur Bay is fitted with the Voith Linear Jet propulsion system – a world first. The Voith Linear Jet is a revolutionary form of propulsion that provides a unique and flawless solution to both high-speed and zero-speed power. “It’s a propeller in a shaped nozzle, with stators in the back so that the water flow comes out as a jet rather than having a circular motion,” explains Marine Superintendent Alistair Knowles of Turbine Transfers.

Fuel efficiency

The 750kg double-walled stainless-steel nozzles, which are placed in front of a pair of Clements rudders, are tailored to the vessel in a way that delays the cavitation point. This allows not only for effortless operation, but it also means that the subsequent noise and vibration levels are kept extremely low – a feature that is enhanced by the resiliently mounted superstructure. When commenting on noise levels within the vessel, Mr Knowles says that the levels recorded were down to 62db, and that “we could chat comfortably without raising our voices, even at high speed.” However, it is not just the smooth ride and well-adjusted acoustics that make the Trearddur Bay a world leader. It also yields huge advantages in fuel efficiency. During the trials the vessel exceeded itself and the results truly speak for themselves – Mr Knowles can only describe them as “phenomenal”. He further states: “The boat is extremely fuel-efficient for a vessel of this size, able to run at 25 knots under reduced power and with a fuel consumption comparable to smaller and less capable boats.”

– half on the foredeck and half behind – and, says Mr Knowles, “we still got a 30knot speed with no loss of handling.” Captain Robson adds, “We’ve measured a bollard pull of 12.4 tonnes whereas most jets of a similar size would only give you six. That’s over double.” What is particularly important are the simplest and most cost-effective access methods, which remain pushing the vessel hard against the boat landings. Mr Stewart describes it as a matter of generating the maximum stick between the boat fender and the landing tubes, dampening out vessel motion as much as possible, and allowing easy transfer for the technicians to the wind turbine. Mr Robson adds: “It’s a case of rubber on metal. If we can do it at lower revs – and I am hoping I can push on at 50 percent of the power with this boat – then it gives us a lot of extra in reserve.”

Down below, in the hulls of the catamaran, you will find the tank area with 500 litres of fresh water and 5,800 litres of fuel. Aft of this, each hull holds an MTU 10V M72 engine that yields 1,250 bhp through ZF3000 gearboxes. A pair of Cummins Onan generator sets provides the on-board electrical power, and both engines and auxiliaries are supported by battery packs. Although there are service and starter banks, these can be cross-linked to get the engines going, if necessary.

Futuristic feel

Perhaps fittingly for a vessel of this calibre, the entire thing has a futurist feel. The engines are bright white and teamed with the silver insulation that covers the flameretardant wall coverings. Captain Robson explains: “Along with the sensors and alarms there’s a camera here so the crew can see

>>

Trearddur Bay is the first boat fitted with the Voith Linear Jet propulsion system.

The vessel has achieved 32 knots on test.

Easy transfer

While the vessel’s superb efficiency is indeed a key talking point, it is not the only thing worth mentioning. “Originally Voith calculated that the vessel would perform at about 27 knots. However, during trails her speed was recorded at 32,” says Rob Stewart, AMC’s commercial director. Further, as the vessel will be used to carry equipment it was loaded with seven tonnes

what’s happening below.” The key safety device of course is the crew and their expertise and familiarity with these engines. On the bridge there is Class-A AIS, autopilot, SART, EPIRB and an MOB location system, alongside a wealth of other features such as magnetic/GPS compasses and radios that have been put together as one package by Boat Electrics. The two radar displays offer exemplary assistance in reduced visibility with electronic chart display. Although these features are all relatively standard on a vessel of this class, some of the elements needed some optimization, which is hardly surprising when you consider how different the characteristics of the Voith Linear Jets are compared to anything that has gone before. The deck saloon offers ample space comfortably accommodating twelve people, with Cleeman Nautic Star leather chairs arranged around four tables, making it possible for the technicians to review plans in a social space that stimulates productivity and team building. Alongside are the galley, a shower and a washing space, as well as a laundry space.

Deck space

The 21m2 forward deck space is equipped with a Hercules pressure-washing system that can be used for cleaning down the tower’s T-pieces. It has the preparation for a hydraulic deck crane and can sport a fuel transfer system and a Hercules hydraulic windlass. Towards the aft there is a second 20m2 space, each deck having the sockets to lock in a 10-foot container. The quality of the finished build and expertise is something that cannot be ignored. The craft and integrity of the building team shines through and teams with its unrivalled level of technology. Trearddur Bay truly deserves its title as world class. As Captain Robson comments: “Trearddur Bay does a 360-degree circle around a 250m radius, but she does it without much loss of speed. If you did this kind of hard-lock turn with a conventional water jet, you’d usually find the jet gets deflected onto the nozzles with a resulting loss of thrust and momentum. The boat then just drops off the plane and will probably stop. Trearddur Bay is different – this boat just keeps going.”

TECHNICAL INNOVATION

NEW OPPORTUNITIES IN THE FIELD OF VOIDS

The Bounty of

NOTHINGNESS WE MAY THINK OF EMPTY SPACE AS NOTHINGNESS – SPACE THAT’S PERHAPS WAITING TO BE FILLED WITH SOMETHING USEFUL – BUT SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS KNOW THAT VOIDS ARE INTRINSICALLY VALUABLE. EMPTY SPACES can fortify structures to make them stronger without burdening them with weight. The ability to manipulate nothingness brings new opportunities to many fields, especially in deep-sea exploration.

E

xtra weight takes energy to move,” says Dr Krishan Chawla, Professor Emeritus of Materials Science & Engineering at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, USA. A point that is especially important when specifying and installing solutions such as drill risers offshore is this – the bigger the pipe and the deeper the oil well, the heavier the riser will become. With this comes risk of damage or failure, as well as requirements for bigger and more expensive rigs that can cater to the additional weight.

Trelleborg.indd 54

However, by making use of high-tech hollow-glass microspheres, this issue can be overcome. By combining glass and air in this way, manufacturers can incorporate highperformance microspheres into a wide range of polymer and resin systems in order to create composite solutions such as subsea foam buoyancy, which meet demanding specifications in strength and weight. For drill riser buoyancy applications, the system is fitted along the length of the drilling riser to reduce its weight to a manageable level. This critical development is enabling the expansion of exploration and resource recovery to ultra-deep-water fields. Dr Chawla and Dr Gary Gladysz, partner and owner of Empyreus LLC – and former VicePresident of R&D within Trelleborg’s offshore operation in the United States – have dedicated a considerable part of their careers to the study of voids to help bring better understanding to this essential feature. In September 2014 the pair released a book titled Voids In Materials:

From Unavoidable Defects To Designed Cellular Materials (Elsevier, 2014). Dr Chawla notes that while books on polymer foams are not unusual in engineering science, their publisher found their approach – looking at materials and functionality through the lens of the void – to be unique. “The point of view we are taking in this book is that all materials have voids at some level, and we can control the size and distribution of these voids to design the materials with specific properties and characteristics,” he says.

Implications of voids

Both scientists say that voids are rarely recognized for their value. “Voids are everywhere whether you want them there or not – you just have to deal with them,” says Dr Gladysz. “Solid or not, there’s void space that adds functionality to all materials. It’s about building materials up from that atomic scale through nano scale on up to the macro scale while incorporating voids at each level to add functionality. This approach will bring about combinations of functionalities that have never been done before.”

TECHNICAL INNOVATION – D R KR I SH A N CH AW LA –

Raise awareness of what happens with voids Dr Chawla says that the implications for future research are great. “We go to great lengths in the book about how to understand the role of voids and how we can use them profitably to design new materials,” he says. “Biomaterials belong to the areas that we think will be very important in the very near future for implants.” The authors hope that their book will provide a road map for designers. “Maybe we can incorporate more functionality into materials and components by incorporating voids on different scales,” says Dr Gladysz. “At universities very few foams courses are offered, but the applications are vast. It’s hardly ever mentioned. We want to raise awareness of what happens with voids and what happens with these materials.”

HGMS technology is also used for subsea applications.

Dr Chawla and Dr Gladysz say they hope to hear from industry experts and scientists interested in incorporating voids into their work. “We are creating an energy around looking at materials and the functionality that voids contribute,” says Dr Chawla. i. www.trelleborg.com

Microspheres Microspheres combine glass and air to create voids. They are thin-walled, hollow-glass microspheres (HGMS) developed to meet the demanding strength, weight and electrical specifications in the aerospace, offshore and other markets. Magnification reveals the nearperfect spherical shape of HGMS, which to the naked eye resemble a fine, white, free-flowing powder. The unique properties of microspheres can help reduce costs, enhance specific properties, and improve material processing. Microspheres can be incorporated into a wide range of polymer and resin systems and can replace or combine with other materials to create composites, many of which are used in critical applications in demanding offshore environments. Trelleborg uses microspheres – which they call Eccospheres – in deep-water buoyancy, drill riser modules and thermal insulation, among other things.

OSI OUTFITTERS PAGES Helideck lighting

Frictape has recently introduced Circle & H Netlight for helideck lighting, a CAP 437-compliant solution for providing illumination for touchdown/positioning markings. In this product the lights are integrated with the landing net, making the fixed-light structures for the circle and H-marking on the surface of the helideck unnecessary. Fixed structures are no longer needed and no holes need to be drilled that can cause leakages or damage the deck’s structure. The illumination is easy to handle and reposition, making maintenance easy. Installation takes no more than three days. The lights are always visible to the helicopter pilot. A maximum height of 25mm, including landing net, ensures the safety of personnel on the deck.

Azimuth additions to integrated tug package A completely fresh range of azimuth thrusters will be the standout feature of a newly integrated propulsion package from Caterpillar Propulsion targeting the tug market, developed to match the highest performance with the most competitive cost. The 60t bollard pull marine thruster azimuth (MTA) is the first model in what will become a new series of rotatable units optimized for tug operations, with an initial unit expected to be delivered into a commercial trial by the end of 2015. The new MTA range has been tailored to optimize performance when working as part of an integrated propulsion train. It will be made available through the Caterpillar dealer network. The complete package for tugs will include engines, high-speed shafting, controls and clutches. The MTA consoles will display and control engine and thruster functionality. i. www.caterpillar.com

Game-changing floating installation

Intelligent part-turn valve actuator

Conquest Offshore believes in taking the best innovation and proven methods in preparing their Conquest MB1 barge for floating installations. The company – in cooperation with several other parties – has created an installation system for monopoles (MPs), transition pieces (TPs) and pre-piling of jackets. Three MPs and up to sixteen TPs can be stored on deck of the 136x36m Conquest MB1 barge through the new skidding system. Upending can be done on deck or while floating. The challenge is the floating installation of the MPs, of which the specially designed motion-compensated pile gripper is essential. While hammering the pile, hydraulic cylinders actively compensate the surge, sway and heave motions of the barge to make sure that its verticality remains within limits. The gripper and the barge’s antiheeling system create, in the words of the company, a “game changer” in offshore wind industry.

The introduction of the new Rotork IQT electric valve actuator brings the advanced functionality and asset management capabilities of Rotork’s thirdgeneration intelligent technology to the direct-drive operation of part-turn valves. Proven in the field by thousands of IQ3 multi-turn actuators, new functionality brought to the compact and robust IQT includes an wide range of advanced data-logging and communication capabilities that have been increased in response to the end users’ desire to access more data, both in the field and in the control room. Diagnostic graphics present a window into the process, showing the valve torque, usage profiles and service logs, facilitating real-time analysis directly at the actuator. The information-rich backlit display is the focus of attention for non-intrusive wireless communication and multi-functional indication, including user-friendly multilingual menus for configuration and commissioning. Local position indication, valve and actuator status, asset management and diagnostic operating information is available to download and can be viewed directly at the actuator on the large LCD display. i. www.rotork.com

OSI OUTFITTERS PAGES New fuel pump for natural-gas marine engines The latest addition to Wärtsilä’s portfolio of gas pumps has been introduced. The new Wärtsilä Svanehøj ECA Fuel Pump (EFP), developed in close cooperation with designers of LNG fuel systems to support gas fueled engines that achieve greater efficiency, was designed to be compatible with Wärtsilä’s LNG Pac fuel-bunkering and supply system, and in accordance with regulations covering vessels operating in Emission Control Areas (ECAs). The new Wärtsilä pump offers a number of advantages, including having no tank connections below liquid level, no electrical components inside the tank, and hardly any contribution to the generation of boil off gas. Having less heat and pressure build up in the fuel tank makes the new pump very safe, while in harsher operating conditions it also maintains the pressure, thereby ensuring a continuous gas flow to the LNG-fueled engine. i. www.wartsila.com

Second Cougar for tidal renewableenergy installers For its mastery of strong currents around tidal turbines, Keynvor MorLift has recently added a second Saab Seaeye Cougar XT to their ROV fleet. This new addition comes fully containerised and can be easily transported across the globe. Alongside their more conventional Cougar assignments, Keynvor MorLift specialise in deploying their Cougars for operational, installation and maintenance work at tidal energy project sites in the UK and Northern Europe where exceptionally strong tidal currents occur. Increasing their work time is a significant advantage for specialist marine contractor Keynvor MorLift and they actively undertake research and development in this area with their Saab Seaeye Cougar fleet playing a key role. i. www.seaeye.com i. www.keynvorlift.co.uk

New solution for power packs Scanwill Fluid Power has launched the new series of MP-2000 XP pressure solutions. These are designed with an additional side outlet port, so that the oil from the high-pressure side is returned directly to tank and thereby ensures that the intensifier and the cylinder are always supplied with cool and filtrated oil. The MP-2000 XP series is ideal for small stand-alone hydraulic circuit systems and compact power packs for tensioning applications in the oil and gas/wind power industry. It has a limited consumption of oil at short cycle times and especially where there is a risk of collecting contaminants in the oil at quick couplings. i. www.scanwill.com

New Seakeeper’s battery-powered model Seakeeper, global manufacturer in marine stabilization, has developed its first DC-powered gyro. Engineered for boats between 9 and 12 metres in length, the highly modern Seakeeper 3DC reduces resonant roll-by up to 95% in a wide range of sea conditions. It is now possible to achieve a safe, stable and comfortable platform on the water, while underway or at rest, without the need for a generator. Based on the company’s Seakeeper 5 model, the Seakeeper 3DC shares the same small footprint of 0.765 x 0.757 x 0.628 metres (LxWxH) and weight of 358 kg. The unit has an electrical draw of between 500 and 1,000 watts, depending on sea state. The Seakeeper 3DC requires no speed-robbing external appendages and is virtually silent. It can be installed off centreline, offering great flexibility for both new builds and refits. i. www.seakeeper.com
