Trade Fair Season in Full Swing
TOM DIETVORST | ACCOUNT MANAGER TOM@YNFPUBLISHERS.COM
HELLO TO YOU ALL AND WELCOME TO THIS ISSUE OF OFFSHORE INDUSTRY. FIRST LET ME INTRODUCE MYSELF: MY NAME IS TOM DIETVORST AND I AM VERY PROUD TO SAY THAT I’M THE NEW ACCOUNT MANAGER/SALES representative for this magazine. During the last nine years I have been working as an account manager in the publishing industry and this has made me more than familiar (if I may say so myself) with the written media, editorial contents, advertisements, communication and marketing strategies. The Offshore Industry that’s now lying in front of you deals, of course, with the upcoming Offshore Energy 2015 Exhibition & Conference in the Amsterdam RAI. You will find a lot of information about the OE2015 event’s contents and exhibitors, several of which will get special attention through their company profiles. And we certainly haven’t forgotten about Offshore WIND 2015, which will be held one day before OE2015 at the same location. Hopefully this information will make it a little easier for you to find your way around this very important trade fair, which will once again be bigger than ever. If you’d like to find out more about Yellow & Finch Publishers, please drop by our booth (number 10.009) and get in touch with myself or with one of my colleagues – we’ll be more than happy to discuss your marketing and publication strategies as well as your editorial issues. Further is this issue we offer you previews and backgrounds of Europort Exhibition 2015 in Rotterdam and of the Offshore Technology Days 2015 in Stavanger, two important fair trades in the offshore business. Further, our contributing maritime lawyer Gijs Noordam shines his light on a legal battle that was waged in court between Greenpeace and an oil company about the latter’s drilling operations in the Arctic – a controversial item indeed. Then we have some interesting items about the upcoming cooperation between DBR and Bredenoort, about DBR’s involvement in the prestigious ONE P11 Project, and about crane manufacturer TTS NMF on how they conduct their FAT procedure. Our ship report discusses the Siemens SOV Estvagt Froude, and we’ll have a look at the recent sail-away from Vlissingen of Heerema’s Gina Krog giant jacket, which we discussed in our previous issues. And last but not least, you’ll find some newsworthy articles on Delta Marine and Aluminium Marine Consultants, among other things. Enjoy the issue and I look forward to meeting you at Offshore Energy 2015 in Amsterdam.

HOLMATRO BOOTH NO.

Holmatro Skidding System: Horizontal movement of heavy loads in limited surroundings Holmatro has developed a modular skidding system for the transportation, placement and installation of a transformer. The principle of the system is that relatively little power is needed to move heavy loads horizontally. A double-acting hydraulic cylinder was fitted in the push/pull unit of the skid-set. Holmatro’s Skidding System is extremely user-friendly and consists of a set of tracks, beams and push-pull units. The system can be expanded easily to adapt to each specific job. The tracks are equipped with special low-friction PTFE sliding pads allowing the beams glide through more easily. The
heavy load is placed on the beams that are secured to the push-pull units. Because of the wings on the push-pull units, the system is able to push and pull heavy loads in a safe and controlled manner over the track. Switching to the opposite direction can be achieved in seconds. The double-acting cylinders attached to the pushpull units are connected to a hydraulic pump by hoses. The pump has two identical flows (oil output) for a synchronized operation. Holmatro is showing their Skidding System and other Industrial Solutions at the Offshore Energy 15, booth 10.080.

During its first commercial application, the newly developed Vibro Lifting Tool (VLT) of CAPE Holland has successfully installed four piles in up to 90-metre water depth. This installation is part of the pre-piling project for the Culzean Wellhead Platform jacket that will be installed in 2016. The VLT was used as a stabbing tool to install all four piles in one sequence to stable depth through a template without any tool change. Negating the need for a tool change meant it was possible to install all four piles in just one 12-hour shift to the predicted penetration depths, which resulted in a significant time saving.
Havyard restructuring to stay profitable Havyard Group ASA is taking further measures to adapt to the market situation and maintain the Group’s profitability. All business areas in Havyard Group have been affected to a certain degree by the general downturn in the market in the oil industry. The Group has been working on rationalisation and restructuring in order to adapt to the new framework conditions. As a result of recent market developments and expectations of continuing low demand, the Group is now implementing further measures, including cutting the workforce by around 100 full-time equivalents. These job cuts are the result of both rationalisation of the operation of the company and an adjustment of the total production capacity.

Massive dredging work by Jan De Nul Group at Suez Canal
JAN DE NUL
On 6 August 2015 the new Suez Canal in Egypt was officially opened – a project for which Jan De Nul Group realized one third of all works. The project was a challenge because of its size and of the very tight deadline. In less than one year, about 250 million cubic metres had to be dredged and Jan De Nul Group took care of one third of it. In all, six dredging companies participated in the project divided over two joint ventures. Jan De Nul Group mobilised seven cutter suction dredgers with a total installed diesel power of 134,720 kW. Some 2,000 people were employed, half of them local and the other half European.

NEWS IN BRIEF Completion of Cygnus topsides and module
Nami upends Ravn satellite platform
With the sail-away of the Cygnus Alpha Compression Module (ACM) on 20 July 2015, the last of four main structures left Heerema Hartlepool, part of Heerema Fabrication Group (HFG), after twoand-a-half years of construction. The Cygnus Bravo Wellhead Platform (BWHP) and the Cygnus Alpha Process & Utilities (APU) topside left earlier to the final offshore destination in the southern North Sea. The key infrastructure, the Cygnus Alpha Wellhead Platform (AWHP), sailed in May 2014. Heerema Hartlepool received the frame agreement from operator GDF Suez E&P UK in August 2012 for the construction of three topsides, a compression module with two bridges to connect the three Alpha platforms and a flare tower for the Cygnus field.
Last April Nami Constructions, residing in Ridderkerk, the Netherlands, undertook a spectacular lifting operation in the Rotterdam Waalhaven. One section of the support frame of the Wintershall satellite platform Ravn was lifted into its place by the Matador 2 and 3 of Bonn & Mees and a Hebo dock. This autumn the platform Ravn will be positioned in the North Sea. The Ravn is a satellite platform with three well connections. The platform will carry a helicopter deck, a crane and a temporal facility for accommodation. The eventual production capacity of the Ravn will be more than 4,500 barrels per day.
HMS Offshore A18 Satellite Platform In May 2014 HMS Offshore in Schiedam, the Netherlands, was awarded the contract to handle the detailed engineering, procurement, construction, precommissioning, load-out, transport, installation and hook-up of the A18 satellite offshore platform for Petrobras Transportation BV. The work was completed this September. The jacket (which measures 23x26x60 metres and weighs 1,250 tonnes) and the topside (35x25x20 metres and 950 tonnes) consist of three decks, a helideck and an accommodation area for eight persons. The platform will be installed in the northern section of the Dutch North Sea, circa 300 kilometres north of Den Helder, in a 44-metre water depth. The gas will be exported via a pipeline HMS OFFSHORE connection to the nearby A12 production BOOTH NO. platform.

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?
Offshore Energy 2015 AN OVERVIEW
“THE OFFSHORE INDUSTRY IS IN DIRE STRAITS!” THIS IS WHAT WE ALL COULD LEARN FROM THE MEDIA ALL OVER THE WORLD. IN 2015 AND 2016 THE PRICE OF OIL COULD DROP TO AN UNPRECEDENTED LOW OF 50 US DOLLARS per barrel. Oil companies would either freeze or drop existing projects, which would hit offshore contractors hard and deter investors. This potential domino effect would make 2015 a sink-or-swim year. The main focus of Offshore Energy 2015 will be what the future will look like – and especially how the latest developments and opportunities can be improved upon in the most efficient fashion.
2
015 will be the eighth consecutive year for the Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference (OEEC), as Offshore Energy 2015 is officially called. For two days more than 13,500 visitors and 650 exhibitors from over eighty different countries will dive into issues surrounding the developments and changes in the oil, gas and energy industries. Recent developments in the offshore industry deserve a range of programmes dedicated to shedding light on those subjects. “During Offshore Energy 2015, we want to update the industry on the various possibilities and innovations available,” says OEEC Manager Ms Femke Perlot-Hoogeveen. “This is also the reason that we have chosen the theme ‘Investing in the future of energy’.”

Alternative energy sources
This year close attention will be given to the development of new and alternative energy sources that could lead to great corporate opportunities. For instance, marine energy will be explored – energy that can be extracted not only from waves and tides, but also from salinity and temperature differences in the ocean. Ocean water is always in motion, and this can be converted into vast amounts of useable energy. This form of offshore energy is still in its infancy, but it is highly available and has huge potential, not only in terms of cost, but also because this type of energy generation causes less strain on the environment. Ocean energy offers many possibilities to produce substantial amounts of renewable energy all over the world. One of the technical sessions discusses these developments and the extensive possibilities. Of course there will be plenty of attention paid to oil and gas developments. New conference themes this year include well intervention, technical data management and HP/HT drilling. Further, decommissioning and subsea processing are back on the agenda.
Growing popularity
Since the first OEEC in 2008, the event has experienced tremendous annual growth. Because of this continuing popularity it has grown into an exhibition that uses four halls in the Amsterdam RAI and holds conferences with about a hundred speakers, divided into twenty programmes. A large group of national and international industry professionals will present themselves, which has led to a growing interest amongst exhibitors and conference speakers. The success of Offshore Energy amidst the fluctuating climate of the oil, gas and energy industry may seem illogical, but can be explained. OEEC 2015 provides an important platform to offshore companies, which enables them to show what they have to offer to an international audience. Plus, networking in an environment where the major industry players are present is increasingly necessary, in particular now that the offshore sector is faced with so much uncertainty. To this can be added that current developments lead to new understanding. History teaches us that the oil, gas and energy industry has always shown great

resilience. Oil prices have rarely been stable for long periods of time, and it is remarkable how the industry has maintained its ability to adapt to changes and developments. It is clear that this industry is global and strong. OEEC 2015 wants to offer insight into these potential changes, tapping into and creating new ideas. And it is exactly this balance between supply and demand which brings interested people to Amsterdam every year.
Conference Advisory Board
For the first time OEEC has established a special Conference Advisory Board. This advisory body is composed of a diverse group of offshore professionals who have at least ten years work experience in the offshore industry and who know how the industry works and develops. The Conference Advisory Board assists the OEEC organization in identifying the key challenges and issues in the offshore sector. The intention is that the Conference Advisory Board members will serve for no more than two years, ensuring a regular breath of fresh air to guarantee high quality.
Offshore WIND 2015
Together with the new forms of energy that were discussed earlier, wind energy will definitely play a starring role. The 2015 Offshore WIND Conference (OWC) will take place on the day prior to OEEC, i.e. on Monday, 12 October. The total worldwideinstalled wind capacity in 2014 was 7 GW, which is expected to grow to as much as 140 GW in 2040. The coming years will see
the realization of new projects in many new locations. The theme of the sixth annual OWC is ‘Building an industry without borders’ – a theme that hopes to not only break down the barriers in legislation, but also the mental barriers, discovering how people can promote the growth of the industry.
Adjusting and improving
Experts have recently forecast that the 2018 offshore market could rally and become strong again. This is partly due to the expected recovery in oil prices and the subsequent increase in investment. The increasing offshore production of oil and gas and the growing market for offshore wind farms will have a positive impact on the future. However, no matter how positive a prognosis may sound, it is never guaranteed. External factors, such as worldwide political conditions, will always play an important role. In the meantime the sector will have to ask itself time and again important questions, and it is certain that it will be up to the companies in the offshore sector to determine which cuts and adjustments have to be made in order to survive in these uncertain times. Organizations must continue to focus on improved efficiency, strategic and operational improvements and whether to block or divert expenditure. OEEC 2015 intends to tackle these issues and provide clear answers. i. www.offshore-energy.biz

OFFSHORE WIND 2015 TAKES A GLOBAL VIEW AT RENEWABLE ENERGY
The Rise of
THE RENEWABLES ACCORDING TO THE INTERNATIONAL ENERGY AGENCY (IEA), BECAUSE OF A GROWING WORLD POPULATION, ENERGY DEMAND WILL RISE BY 40 PER CENT IN 2040. AT THE SAME TIME, HOWEVER, THE ENERGY INDUSTRY FACES CHALLENGES WITH A CHANGING CLIMATE, which will require a drastic reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. So, it’s no surprise that renewable energy will be a very important part of the worldwide energy supply. The IEA even reported recently that renewable energy could surpass coal, nuclear power and natural gas as the world’s largest source of electricity within fifteen years. In this light it speaks for itself that Offshore Energy 2015 saves some spots for the developments and innovations in renewable energy.

lthough it is nothing new for countries and companies to invest in renewable energy, it seems like this alternative form of energy production grows faster than ever. The European Union for example set themselves a target of a 20 per cent share of renewable energy in 2020 and according to the European Commission’s biennial progress report, it looks like the EU as a whole is going to achieve this.
China
China may be seen as a conservative country, but on clear power it is definitely a force to reckon with. So far the country has spent more than 80 billion US dollars in new renewables generating capacity and has taken a big lead over respectively the EU (USD 46 billion), Japan (USD 37 billion) and the USA (USD 34 billion). The Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, Ms Maria Van Der Hoeven, told BBC News: “China is now the largest wind power market in the world. They have increased their power generation from renewables from really nothing ten years ago to 25 per cent now. These are very important signals that China is moving into the right direction.”

Australia
But ahead of them all must be Australia. The Conservation Council of Western Australia recently released a report where they stated that the south of Australia could be powered completely by renewable energy in not more than fifteen years. And even though they set themselves a really challenging target, the report says this is achievable based on extensive modelling of future power needs.
Marine energy
One of the alternative energy sources explored the last couple of years is marine energy – energy that can be extracted not only from waves and tides, but also from salinity and temperature differences in the ocean. Last June Chile signed a declaration to co-finance the local Marine Energy Research & Innovation Centre. It’s the first center of its kind in Latin America and the state will finance 58 percent of the total costs of USD 20 million (EUR 17.6 million). Chile expects to become a regional and world reference in marine energy, taking advantage of its coastline and tide. Recent developments in the offshore industry also deserve a range of programmes dedicated to shedding light on those subjects. Offshore Energy 2015 wants to update the industry on the various possibilities and innovations available. That’s why marine energy will be featured in one of the Technical Sessions at the conference.
Offshore WIND 2015
Wind energy is one of the best known forms of renewable energy. The total worldwideinstalled wind capacity in 2014 was 7 GW, which is expected to grow to as much as 140
GW in 2040. The coming years will see the realization of new projects in many new locations. Last year 35 per cent of the companies attending Offshore Energy 2014 were working in the offshore wind industry. To allow parties to obtain information on several levels of offshore energy, the annual Offshore WIND Conference (OWC) will take place a day prior to Offshore Energy 2015. The theme of the sixth annual Offshore WIND Conference is ‘Building An Industry Without Borders’. A theme that hopes to not only exceed international borders, but also break down both legal and mental barriers, thereby discovering how people can promote the growth of the industry.
Public opinion
It becomes clearer and clearer for companies in the offshore energy industry that there is a lot to gain in the matter of renewable energy. Royal Dutch Shell CEO Mr Ben Van Beurden recently emphasized the necessity of extending the investments in renewable energy. He said: “In a world where Saudi Arabia has ambitions to become a global power in solar and wind energy, the vision of a long-term future powered in the main by renewables is one none of us can ignore.” He intends to encourage all OPEC members to take the developments in renewable energy more than serious. Mr Van Beurden: “I believe that if we don’t act now, in twenty years’ time global public opinion will be unforgiving.” i. www.offshorewindconference.biz

THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND A FAIR OPERATOR CABIN
Merford Ready For The Future NO MATTER HOW MUCH WE MAY WANT IT, A COMPLETELY SUSTAINABLE AND CLIMATE-NEUTRAL WORLD IS – FOR THE TIME BEING AT LEAST – FAR OFF INTO THE FUTURE. BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN WE SHOULD SIMPLY ACCEPT THE CURRENT STATE of affairs. Today a growing number of sustainable initiatives and fair innovations are arising that have an impact on our planet in general, and on the offshore industry in particular. It is Merford’s ambition to contribute to these developments within its own discipline: the operator cabin. The result of this contribution is the Ecocab NEO: a cabin composed of sustainable and environmentally friendly components. In other words, a fair operator cabin.
Sustainable ambitions
It’s evident that the way in which today’s world operates is not sustainable in the long run. For that reason many industries are searching for alternative components for their products and different energy sources. Wind, solar and tidal energy come to mind here. There is a great deal of focus on innovations – a sign that major changes may be close at hand. Merford, situated in Gorinchem in the Netherlands, makes a contribution to these initiatives by broadening its horizons when it comes to its own expert product: the crane operator cabin. The company has a reputation to uphold – efficiency, safety and health are the key themes in manufacturing its cabins and components. For example, Merford has developed an ergonomic operator chair that protects the operator’s physical wellbeing from any harm: the Ergoseat. And many of Merford’s cabins are equipped with an industrial climate-control

Merford Cabins.indd 28
system and filter casing, which safeguards the cabin’s interior climate and air quality at all times. Merford’s continuous efforts in improving its product offerings have given the company a leading position in the industry. In many sectors, for instance the transhipment of containers and bulk in ports, the steel industry or the offshore sector, Merford is regarded as a top supplier of high-quality operator cabins. As a consequence, the development of a fair and sustainable operator cabin was to be expected. Merford’s most important motivation however is the realisation that the world needs initiatives of this kind to truly advance and the company hopes to bring about a change in those industries that lie within its reach.
Ecological operator cabin
The Ecocab NEO cabin was developed on the basis of a crystal-clear philosophy: wherever
sustainable alternatives are feasible and reusable materials are available, this idea must be followed. In 2014 Merford was fully realised that a meaningful change could also be initiated in the production of operator cabins, despite the small scale of this product sector. Marco Kers, Senior Engineer at Merford Cabins, started working on the design of a universal crane cabin, the Ecocab NEO, and started searching for sustainable and reusable materials that make the cabin

a fair cabin. Although finding sustainable and reusable materials turned out to be far more difficult than expected, preparations were completed in 2015 and the first Ecocab NEO cabin was finished in time to be presented at the Offshore Energy exhibition in Amsterdam.
Healthy working conditions
The wellbeing of the crane operator is a crucial theme in all Merford products, and of course that includes the Ecocab NEO. All

the cabin’s components do not produce any – or at most minimal – VOC emissions. Furthermore, the use of hazardous substances such as benzene, lead and PVC has been avoided, which is a great benefit to production workers. Social fairness was a key theme in Merford’s search for and the production of components, from the workers who extract the raw materials to the people who weld the structure and the person sitting inside the cabin. In the future

Merford will continue to keep a sharp eye on the origin of the components they use and the working conditions of every man and woman in the production process.
A better environment
It may be clear Merford intends to contribute to a world in which the emission of carbon dioxide is kept to an absolute minimum. In this respect major improvements can be made in production, transportation and the processing of waste materials. By continuously searching for progress this ideal is never all that far away and this is why Merford is strongly focused on reducing its CO2 footprint. Nevertheless, so far the principle of recycling and upcycling has not reached every sector to the fullest possible extent and this is something that Merford hopes to achieve with the Ecocab NEO. Many of the materials used for the Ecocab NEO – such as glass, steel and insulation material – can be reused for new applications. In addition, Merford is of the opinion that, no matter the limited scale of the industry in which the company operates, there is a future in sustainable energy. This also applies to operator cabins. By

equipping the cabins with solar cells, electrically driven components can be applied to a significant extent in an environment-conscious way. Furthermore, by outfitting the cabin with the most energyefficient equipment possible, a considerable reduction in total energy consumption is achieved. To name one example: the electricity consumption is reduced by circa 1,400 watts by using adiabatic cooling, an innovative method of cooling to achieve a friendlier climate.
Offshore Energy 2015
All these aspects have been incorporated into the Ecocab NEO and the cabin can be used in a wide range of crane types. You are cordially invited to take a look at the Merford stand (11.093B) during the Offshore Energy 2015 Exhibition at the Amsterdam RAI to have a close look at the Ecocab NEO and find out more about its background, technology and special characteristics. i. www.merford.com

svagt Froude is the first Havyard 832-design offshore SOV built at Havyard Ship Technology’s shipyard in Leirvik in Sogn, Norway. It is one of two ordered by Danish shipping company Esvagt in July 2013. The vessel was named and transported to her owner in February 2015. Initially the Esvagt Froude had been chartered to Siemens Energy for five years to transport cargo and crew for the construction and operation of the Baltic II offshore wind farm. However, as the farm was not yet finished when the vessel was delivered, the Esvagt Froude has been working on another assignment at Westermost Rough, a farm under construction off the coast of Grimsby in the English sector.

“Many of the assignments at Westermost Rough are similar to those we will be working on for Baltic II,” says Ib Hansen, Head of Commercial for Esvagt: “The farm is under construction and we have been busy from day one. It has been really good to practise transferring turbine technicians from ship to WTG with both the walk-towork gangway system and the two safetransfer boats we have on board. We have not yet had the opportunity to test transfer

Esvagt Froude features an Ampelmann A-type gangway, which is a walk-to-work offshore access system. The gangway allows the on-board technicians to reach wind turbines through a hydraulically stabilised asymmetric bridge, even during wave heights up to 2.5 metres. It has an active and passive roll-damping system for better comfort and gangway operations. The vessel can be placed close to the wind turbines for easy and safe operations. The state-of-the-art dynamic-positioning system provides better manoeuvrability during the servicing of wind farms. Froude’s high ERNscore (station-keeping capability) allows for operations even in severe climatic conditions. The Esvagt Froude is fitted with a deck crane having a capacity to carry 2 tonnes at 12-metre outreach and a boat landing ramp at aft to launch a safe transport boat (STB) 12A or catamaran transfer vessels. Additional facilities include an incinerator and compactor for waste management and a closed-circuit television (CCTV) for monitoring the central areas of operation and the vessel. The A-Lifting company delivered a crane package for the Esvagt Froude. Electrical engineering, automation and alarm systems (including the Havyard Concept Bridge) were delivered by Havyard Power & Systems.

Accommodation and safety features
Esvagt Froude has sixty single-bed cabins for forty technicians and twenty crewmembers. The accommodation facilities, including modern cabins, meeting rooms, fitness area and entertainment areas, are located in the superstructure. The walk-to-work gangway system is complemented by STBs, developed at Esvagt’s headquarters in Esbjerg. An open STB model, the 7B, is also included and can accommodate two crewmembers and three technicians and their equipment. It also has an enclosed STB model, the 12A, carrying two crewmembers and eight technicians, along with one tonne of cargo. A standard Esvagt fast-rescue boat is positioned on the deck.
Engine and propulsion
Esvagt Froude is powered by a dieselelectric propulsion system and an advanced DC power system developed by Siemens, Trondheim, Norway. The power plant enables fuel and energy efficiency while providing additional comfort to the crew. The vessel is also fitted with Siemens’ BlueDrive propulsion system, which reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The propulsion system includes four diesel generators, each capable of generating 1,650 kW of power. Esvagt Froude includes 1,600kW main azimuth thrusters and

Low fuel consumption
Although the Esvagt Froude has been painted in the familiar orange-red Esvagt colour, their design is entirely green. The goal is low fuel consumption. The vessel is equipped with Siemens BlueDrive Plus system, an innovative and fuel-saving DC direct-current system. With this system, the rotation speed of the vessel’s diesel return current/power varies according to load instead of running at a constant revolution speed, which reduces fuel consumption. “Our expectations of low fuel consumption have so far been met to the full,” says Kristian Ole Jakobsen, Chief Operating Officer at Esvagt. “Our environmental approach has been extended beyond the direct current system. The hull has been energy optimised to such a degree that we have installed LED lights, propulsion units with counter-rotating propellers, control of all thrusters and larger consumers with current converters, recycling of waste heat from the diesel engines for heating in the accommodation

areas – and more. The feedback we have received from the vessels tells us that these systems are working optimally.” Another expected benefit in choosing the direct current system was the reduction in noise and vibration in the vessel – expectations that have been fulfilled. “The vessel is very comfortable and the noise and vibration levels from the vessel’s diesel engine system are significantly lower,” says Kristian Ole Jakobsen. Esvagt has a fleet of 43 vessels (plus an SOV for offshore wind scheduled by 2016 and a crew change vessel scheduled by 2017) and more than 900 employees on and off shore. The fleet provides the daily safety and support functions within the offshore wind and oil and gas industries. i. www.esvagt.com i. www.havyard.com

fter a successful FEED study by HFG’s in-house engineering department, Heerema Vlissingen was awarded the Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) contract in February 2013 for the Gina Krog launch jacket and the pre-drilling wellhead module. During the FEED study the specific design requirements of the topside were taken into account. Throughout the various FEED phases incorporating the design development of the topside, HFG developed a solid launch jacket concept providing a firm basis for the EPC contract.
Record-breaking launch jacket
At the end of March of this year – seventeen months after construction – the recordbreaking launch jacket was loaded onto the barge. On 19 June it left for its definitive destination for installation in the Gina Krog field in the central part of the North Sea. The Gina Krog launch jacket weighs over 17,000 tonnes. The support frame measures 60 by 50 metres and the top of the jacket 40 by 30 metres. The jacket itself is 142 metres high. With the pre-drilling wellhead module, that will only leave offshore after the installation of the jacket, it will be possible to drill wells before the placement of the top deck. The module weighs 265 tons.
Special skid beams
important milestone for Heerema Vlissingen,” says Koos-Jan van Brouwershaven, CEO of HFG. “For the largest launch jacket ever built by HFG we designed and built a new and innovative flow-measuring system to optimize the jacket’s upending during the installation. Because of its weight, we built special skid beams at the Vlissingen yard for the project. With these beams we were able to load the jacket safely and efficiently onto the barge. The successful delivery of this heavy and immense launch jacket is the result of superior teamwork and an enormous commitment in the field of safety and quality, both by Statoil & Partners and by HFG. Thanks to all our efforts in the field of safe working, we have realized this project without lost-time incidents.”
Sleipner field
The Gina Krog field is a gas, condensate and oil field situated in the Norwegian central section of the North Sea, about 30 kilometres northwest of the Sleipner field. The Gina Krog field is being developed with a so-called fixed platform at a water depth of 116 metres and will be tied into the Sleipner facilities for the export of gas. The oil will be transported by means of tankers. i. www.hfg.heerema.com

r Hafkamp: “We were asked to design and manufacture this generator set by Oranje Nassau Energie (ONE), the largest privately-owned Dutch exploration and production company in the oil and gas business. We are very proud to participate in this innovative and highly prestigious project.”
Harsh offshore conditions Henri Hafkamp
The P11 platform is an unmanned and sustainable satellite platform, consisting of a topside and jacket, intended to work for the P11-E field located 55 kilometres northwest off Rotterdam harbour. Mr Hafkamp: “It goes without saying that the maintenance intervals of a
stand-alone generator on an unmanned drilling rig must be as long as possible. The generator, which will function as a back-up unit for illumination, service and so on, will be placed on the topside, exposed to the elements, and must be fitted with a fully enclosed, stainless-steel housing. We want to restrict the harsh North Sea weather conditions and the impact of salt air and water to a minimum. The design lifetime of the generator set will be over fifteen years and the operational costs must be kept as low as possible.”
In full swing
Mr Hafkamp continues: “In July we received the order from ONE to start working
on the design, construction, assembly and testing of the generator package. We are now in full swing with its design, the purchase of equipment parts, the producing of drawings and schemes and other development activities. We plan to start the production and assembly of the generator set in the first half of October. At the end of 2015 we intend to start testing. Early next year the onshore installation will take place at a well-known Dutch yard.” DBR is currently also producing the hydraupack for the intended hydraulic crane, which is driven by a Volvo Diesel engine and combined with a solar panel. i. www.dbr-bv.nl

y mid-June, the hull of the first 21-metre vessel for wind farm industry service provider Cwind was up to the gunwales, plating was underway on a second 21-metre craft, and work had just started on both 23-metre HSSVs in the fourvessel order. Concurrent wheelhouse and cabin production was also underway. The new-builds represent a departure from CWind’s previously exclusive use of composite-hulled windfarm service vessels.
One-stop-shop provider
The two 21-metre symmetric-hull catamarans are being built to MCA classification Category 2.
The first is due for launch in December and to be handed over to CWind by the end of 2015. This new generation of high-efficiency vessels has been designed in-house. Adding yet another dimension to AMC’s emergence as a one-stopshop vessel provider, financing can now be delivered in-house via packages provided by Peter Curtis with Daniel Stewart and Company. The two identical 21-metre vessels feature MTU V10 engines powering RollsRoyce water jets for an anticipated top speed of 29 knots. The beam is 7.7 metres and the craft have a maximum draft of only 1.35 metre. The vessels are equipped for a crew of three with seating for twelve technicians in transit. The vessels will be capable of safe personnel transfer in 1.5-metre significant wave height conditions in all directions. A Palfinger PK8501M B knuckleboom crane set forward to port will expedite cargo transfer.

Twin MTU engines driving Rolls-Royce water jets will take the craft to an anticipated 28 knots. The main deck has been designed to take a load of 1.50 tonnes per square metre with container sockets designed into the structure on the fore and aft deck to accommodate a 10-foot container, plus a 20-foot container on the bow. The superstructure is built as a separate structure resiliently mounted to the main deck using flexible mounts. Measuring circa 9 metres long by 5.6 metres wide, it is insulated to permit noise levels not exceeding 65 dB(A) in sea state 2 at 24 knots. The two vessels are due to enter service in the second quarter of 2016. With AMC ever striving to enhance quality control, the company’s commercial director Rob Stewart said the yard’s certification to ISO 14001 and 18001 were both anticipated by the end of July 2015. i. www.aluminium-boats.com

hen the Shetland-based operator chartered its Damen 2611 Multicat for a basic remit to serve as anchor handler for the cable-laying vessel, it had no idea what further scope of services the vessel would be called upon to perform.
Great stability
The 26-metre Whalsa Lass features an 11.5-metre beam for great stability and a shallow 2.25-metre draft, advantageous for bringing cables to shore. Three Caterpillar C32 TTA main engines generate 1,902 bkW to provide a powerful 37-tonne bollard pull and a speed of 10 knots. A 100-tonne winch and twin Heila3SL 230-tonne/metre knuckleboom cranes further add to a specification that informed client and operator alike that the vessel was capable of making a broader contribution to the project than was first envisioned. Work started with Whalsa Lass handling a 6- by 7.5-tonne delta flipper anchor spread for the cable-laying vessel, with the anchors pre-laid and the Multicat hooking up to cable-laying vessel wires in up to 3 knots of tide. Soon Whalsa Lass was delivering water

and provisions to other project vessels within the 25km2 work area. She was then conducting cardinal buoy inspections, retrieving and returning them to shore for maintenance and subsequently re-deploying them.
Great versatility
She was called upon for the delivery of cable protection systems and the deployment of rock bags over cables in shallow water, deploying a 4-tonne bag every fourteen minutes. She could be equipped as a dive support platform, with a full dive spread encompassing decompression chamber, welfare, quads, a dive shack and three-point mooring, all while still conducting anchorhandling duties with the dive spread on board. This allowed her to work with the divers moving boulders clear of the cable lay route. A full ROV spread was also brought on board, with a 20-inch ROV container, control shack, provision of 120A power from ship’s generators and three-point mooring, again while concurrently still anchor handling. Also performed were PLGR works, dragging a grapple train along the cable route checking for other obstructions that could affect the subsequent cable lay. The Whalsa Lass was even called upon to salvage containers lost overboard from a passing cargo vessel that were drifting and posed a collision risk to the windfarm, then transporting them ashore.

Repairs to the cardinal marker.
Great efficiency
Delta Marine created method statements, risk assessments and storyboards for all the above tasks, reducing the workload for the client’s management and minimising delay to works proceeding. Delta Marine sourced all rigging and anchors, replaced all worn or damaged components, and provided a weekly inventory to the client detailing the location and condition of each individual component. Delta Marine even extended the push knees at Whalsa Lass’s bow, allowing crew transfer vessels to push on for optimised safe passage of project personnel while on site. Such comprehensive efforts by Whalsa Lass and Delta Marine did not go unnoticed. The client’s cable package manager told Delta: “All your efforts have been successful and executed safely and professionally. It was a

ATPI Griffinstone WHEN TRAVEL IS CRITICAL
WHEN IT COMES TO THE OFFSHORE AND ENERGY SECTOR, HEALTH AND SAFETY – AND NOT JUST IN TERMS OF TRAVEL – ARE CRITICAL TO EVERY OPERATION. Ensuring that qualified people are moved to the right locations in the safest and most cost-effective way is a core operation of any oil and gas business.
P
ieter Rieder, Global Head of Energy Sales of ATPI Griffinstone (part of the ATPI Group) explains the importance of duty of care. Mr Rieder: “With extreme globalweather conditions, political unrest, health scares and other sources of tension in countries across the world, the safety and security of travellers has never been more important. This is particularly true for businesses in offshore industries such as oil, gas and shipping, where travel may involve visiting some of the most inhospitable locations in the world. As well as providing an efficient and cost-effective service, specialist travel-management teams who have an in-depth knowledge of these sectors can be crucial to ensuring that workers are protected when they are travelling overseas or offshore.”

Travel management partner
A key area of activity and management in crew travel concerns planning for the worst, and having the processes and people to manage an emergency situation. In today’s offshore industry, emergency response agreements with a travel provider are becoming more and more part of the standard contract – they are no longer an extra nice-to-have. When something goes wrong, being able to respond to the situation and ensure safety now includes having a travel-management partner as part of an incident team. Travel management companies (TMCs) that work with businesses in the offshore sector often partner with specialist third-party organisations such as International SOS to provide additional support and care,

The safety and security of travellers has never been more important. including medical emergencies or security threats. A TMC acts as an important ‘integrator’ that is providing relevant support for clients as part of one manageable duty-of-care package.
Data integration
Pieter Rieder, Global Head of Energy Sales of ATPI Griffinstone.
Organisations in the offshore and energy industries always take duty of care very seriously and other sectors can learn a lot from their practices. Most companies already have policies in place for the protection of employees when these are at their place of work, for instance on a drilling rig in the middle of the North Sea. However, there is still a way to go when it comes to duty-of-care coverage when employees are travelling to and from the rig itself or to another work-related destination. Specialist TMCs can plug this gap and put emergency processes in place to deal with any eventuality anywhere in the world, via data integration and traveller-tracking technology. Tracking and monitoring the passports and visas of a crew is also a key element of planning crew travel. Mr Rieder adds: “From a business perspective it saves considerable time if visa services are integrated in crew travel planning. The ATPI HomePort
technology platform can help reduce staffing costs, increase booking speeds and minimise human error. ATPI HomePort works in partnership with existing human resource systems, including SBNT, OCS and Seacrew, and enables companies to send traveller requests, as well as vessel and trip information, directly from their crew management systems. For example, if our team knows that a visa is experiencing a two-day delay, we can make informed and proactive plans to manage around this situation rather than waiting to discover that an individual specialist expected to travel cannot enter the destination. By linking visa information with safety qualifications and shift scheduling at any one time, we can provide the best-possible advice on which crew movements make the most sense from a health, safety and cost perspective.”
Online tool
ATPI recently developed a new integration with leading global port agencies to enhance their seamless service offered to clients within the shipping industry. The agreement has enabled the ATPI Griffinstone to offer an enhanced and better-integrated approach to their crew travel arrangements. This means that all elements of travel for those joining ships are handled via one technology platform called ATPI HomePort, including the management of taxis or launches required to reach vessels as well as specific immigration arrangements. It is the first time that such a comprehensive online tool has been available through an international travel management company. Mr Rieder concludes: “The offshore sector represents a large part of our business and we dedicate a great deal of our time and resources to seeking out new ways to make travel and crew transportation easier, safer and more cost-effective for our clients.” i. www.atpi.com/griffinstone

common FAT is performed in the workshop of the production facility and mainly comprises functional tests. Here the crane has not yet been completely assembled and solely consists of the crane housing, the cabin and its hydraulic and electric devices. The jib, the A-frame – the mast – and the foundation have not been installed during a common FAT, which is the most conventional scenario for tests that are executed during the final part of the construction and engineering phase and before the final installation on the vessel.
The common FAT
During a common FAT the cranes are visually inspected, both internally and externally, and

verified to be in faultless condition. Functional tests include, among other things, the verification of the correct voltage setting, testing of the start function by pressing the start button on the remote-control console, testing the emergency stop at the remotecontrol console and inside the switchboard, testing the warning lights (red) and function lights (green), testing the speed of the hoisting winch from slow to maximum and, in applicable, testing the luffing cylinder. The crane functions must operate throughout the full range of all demonstrable movements up to its maximum speed. The slewing, load and constant tension are function-tested after the installation and commissioning of the crane on the vessel.
The not-so-common FAT
A comprehensive FAT, however, includes a full-load test. This is a customized and complex testing procedure of a completely assembled and operational crane. A formal test procedure is verified before the start of the test. The full-load test is an essential aspect of the entire system lifecycle and should be performed by qualified and experienced personnel. A dedicated project team consisting of the crane manufacturer, the customer and a Class Representative will attend the cross-functional FAT procedure to make sure that the crane is designed, manufactured and tested in compliance with all the technical specifications and contractual requirements.

Full-load testing
The full-load test of offshore cranes is conducted after the overall inspection of the workmanship and starts with a function test of the crane controls. Luffing, hoisting and slewing of the crane are performed with and without load. The full-load test is done on the load-limiting system, such as the deck lift mode, in-harbour mode, ship-to-ship mode or personnel lift mode. Further tests may include the auxiliary winch, the winch limit switches, the automatic and manual overload protection systems, the emergency stop system and the emergency release system. Very important is the overload test with test loads above the safe working load (SWL). If the FAT does not show any weaknesses or faults in the crane’s design and engineering, or in terms of its safety requirements, then the crane proves to be have been built according to its technical specifications and operational requirements. Equipment failures or technical deficiencies discovered during the FAT and the full-load test are to be rectified. If there are any deficiencies and outstanding actions on the equipment then these are to be solved before the crane is delivered to the client. Authorized personnel of the crane OEM, the customer and the Class Representative sign the FAT protocol – only then is the crane dismantled and shipped to the customer where it is ready for use.

Experience
Since the test stand at TTS NMF was erected in September 2013, several full-load tests of offshore cranes have been conducted. The first full-load test with a completely assembled 165-tonne-SWL knuckle-boom crane with active heave compensation (AHC) system was performed in September 2013. The assembly, testing and dismantling of the crane was done within ten weeks. The second full-load test was executed in July 2014. Again, a 165-tonne-SWL knuckle boom crane with an AHC system passed factory approval. Assembly and dismantling took four days each and testing took eight weeks. The third and fourth full-load tests took place in June and July 2015, during which two pedestal lattice boom cranes with an SWL of 85 tonnes were tested within four weeks each.

MARITIME LAW
HOW FAR TO GO IN COURT?
Icy Oil
O

Oil has brought the world numerous blessings. But oil has also become a commodity that is open to all sorts of conflict, the strongest being, of course, the waging war over it. Luckily some of these wars only rage inside the Courtroom.
WORDS BY GIJS NOORDAM
il exploration and production in the Arctic has become a major public topic. Since the oil spill disaster with the oil tanker Exxon Valdez in 1989 we have all become aware of the efforts that are necessary to clean up an oil spill in the Artic. It should therefore not come as a surprise that there is a broad public concern regarding the quest for exploring and producing the vast oil and gas reserves in the Arctic. But how far can one go in legally expressing this concern?
Battlefield
In May 2014 Greenpeace tried to prevent the discharge of the Russian tanker Mikhail Ulyanov carrying arctic crude oil to Rotterdam. This action became somewhat of a battlefield. The small and fast Greenpeace RIBs (rigid inflatable boats) refused to follow orders from the port authorities to stay out of the way of the tanker, after which one of the RIBs collided

with a police boat. The police picked up several Greenpeace activists and the District Attorney started a prosecution that was still pending when, in October 2014, the tanker was again expected to arrive in Rotterdam with a cargo of arctic crude oil. This time Greenpeace issued a press release, shortly before the arrival of the tanker, stating that Greenpeace would again protest against the discharge of this cargo of crude oil and that it would position its mother ship, appropriately named Arctic Sunrise, at the entrance of the Rotterdam port. Charterers of the tanker summoned Greenpeace before the Summary Court for a prohibition order against Greenpeace to as much as pointing a finger at the tanker on penalty of a hefty penal sum for any infringement of such order. Greenpeace heavily defended the requested order, thereby showing that the organisation is not only adamant in the way of campaigning on the water but also in a court of law.

Gijs Noordam.indd 67
Well prepared
Greenpeace first argued that it had been harmed in its defence as it was summoned to the Summary Court on such a short notice. However, the arrival of this second cargo had already been made public one month earlier. The Court reasoned that Greenpeace had notified its intention to demonstrate against the tanker only hours before the arrival of the vessel. Further, the Court noted from Greenpeace’s extensive arguments that the organisation was apparently well prepared and could therefore not be considered prejudiced in defending its position in Court. Greenpeace secondly denied that the claiming party had any relationship with the tanker or her cargo, but charterers showed the Court their charter party so this defence was also dismissed. This resulted in Greenpeace having to bring out its primary material defence which is – evidently – freedom of demonstration, in many
countries luckily still a constitutional right. Greenpeace was determined to take action against oil exploration in the Arctic as, in their opinion, this is a serious threat to the environment. Of course the Court had to subscribe this but noted at the same time that there are legal limits to it. The different interests of all the parties had to be weighed. Greenpeace claimed that its own interest in making its vision public was more important than the lawful and commercial interests of charterers to carry and deliver arctic oil.
Not unlawful
The exploration and production of arctic oil may be controversial, but it is not unlawful. Consequently the Court failed to see why the interest of charterers would be less important. In itself it is not necessarily unlawful to hinder commercial activities but this should not go out of proportion, according to the Court. Greenpeace had

The case was a tightrope for the Court to walk. And as you know, Lady Justice is blindfolded, which made it even more of a challenge.
already taken various actions against exploration of arctic oil by – amongst other things – taking actions against the same tanker earlier that year by lobbying politicians to propose with the government a stop to oil transport in the Artic. The Court consequently reasoned that by now the issue was well on the public agenda. Charterers had an interest in discharging their cargo without hindrance, the more so because Greenpeace had not specified what type of action it contemplated against ship and cargo. According to the Court it was fair to assume that charterers would suffer damage if Greenpeace would take similar actions as before. Of course the port authorities could intervene if the actions would go out of hand, as Greenpeace argued, but the Court adhered weight to the fact that again public means would have to be mobilized to prevent that during the demonstration a dangerous situation would arise, especially since the estimated time of arrival was at night. Greenpeace’s argument that charterers apparently intended ‘to sneak into the port’ did not change this.
Within proportion
The Court continued by repeating the two important standards for considering the legality of actions such as a strike, boycott
www. o f f s h o r e - i n d u s t r y.eu
Gijs Noordam.indd 69
or stoppage like the one at hand, namely that the action necessary for reaching the intended goal cannot be reached by any other means, and that the action should remain within proportion. Greenpeace had already generated public awareness around oil exploration in the Arctic and their intended action would only create more public attention. Greenpeace failed to show why this further attention could not be reached by other actions that would not damage charterers. The Court considered the intended action also out of proportion, as Greenpeace refused to give details of its intentions so that the interest of charterers in knowing what to expect had to take preference. During Greenpeace’s previous action a dangerous situation had been created by the collision between Greenpeace’s RIB and a police boat. Public means had to be deployed and damage had been caused. As a result Greenpeace was ordered by the Court to abstain, for a period of four weeks, from action directly related to the vessel itself, her course, the discharge of her cargo and her departure. This still allowed Greenpeace to use its right of demonstration through other means. i. www.tenholternoordam

OSI OUTFITTERS PAGES CNC pipe-finishing machine
PowerProx MultiTask
Copier Bevelmachines is expanding the machine portfolio on metal-pipefinishing machinery. The new innovation is the CNC pipefinishing machine with both radial and axial feeding. Because of the feeding systems, especially tougher material like stainless steel, Duplex or Super Duplex can be easily machined because this machine is cutting the metal from outside down to inside, step by step. Therefore you could also easily machine heavy-wall pipes, only the process takes longer. This machine is capable of outside and inside machining of the pipe, like bevelling, facing, squaring, deburring, tapering and threading. All these preparations are done without manually changing the tools in the chuck for a different angle or shape. The metal pipe is clamped and the chuck with the cutting bits is preparing all the required angles and shapes controlled by the CNC system. Copier offers these CNC pipe-finishing machines in models up to 8, 16, 24, 30 and 48 inches. i. www.bevelmachines.com
The new standard for reliable detection with an extended sensing range cannot be measured with a conventional yardstick. After all, with sensing ranges from 5 cm to 3.8 metres, no object goes undetected by the PowerProx MultiTask photoelectric sensor. To achieve this, not only has SICK packed all the advantages of time-of-flight technology into the world’s smallest housing, they have also increased detection speed. Thanks to PowerProx, objects being conveyed at high-speed, small and flat objects, and jet black and shiny objects can be reliably detected over a high sensing range. The photoelectric sensor also provides stable detection results over a large detection angle and is immune to ambient light. The small PowerProx MultiTask photoelectric sensor housing combines time-of-flight technology, eye safety at the level of laser class 1, outstanding optics, and fast signal processing. i. www.sick.com
EVE encoder Siqura’s new EVE encoder is making a difference by controlling legacy analogue PTZ cameras. These include the Hernis PTZ cameras with RX400 protocol. Last June, Siqura, global supplier of advanced video surveillance solutions, in cooperation with Norwegian companies WestNet and Last Mile Communication, announced the availability of an updated version of the EVE encoder that includes integration of old legacy proprietary analogue PTZ cameras. This game changer makes it possible to take control of your own system and upgrade your system to the latest technology, such as open video platform from Milestone Systems. The EVE encoder enables you to reuse your Hernis PTZ cameras and choose an open video platform, such as Milestone Systems. A wide variety of IP-based units and subsystems can now work together with old legacy PTZ cameras, making it possible to integrate IO modules, sound systems, lighting, access control and much more. i. www.siqura.com
Kelvin Top-Set invests in real-time app Kelvin Top-Set, the leading incident investigation specialist, has announced an investment of GBP 50,000 in an innovative investigation app. Top-Set Live enables teams to collaborate from multiple locations. Details, images, live sketches, audio and video can be shared in real time from remote locations both on and offshore. Iain Livingstone, developer of Top-Set Live, commented: “Unique aspects of this app are that users can see and speak to each other whilst drawing on the screen and incorporating symbols if required. This allows investigators to easily highlight details of complex equipment failures and problems so that issues can quickly be identified and resolved.” David Ramsay, Kelvin Top-Set Group managing director said: “It is a very powerful communication tool for investigations and maintenance problem solving. The app enables crucial information to be discussed live. This substantially cuts down on time, travel and cost. Images and messages can also be stored for subsequent analysis and discussion.” i. www.kelvintopset.com

OSI OUTFITTERS PAGES Umbilical emergency disconnection tool
improvement for AUV capabilities
Cutting-tool specialist, Webtool, has developed an emergency disconnection tool (EDT) for subsea intervention systems. The Webtool EDT enables rapid cutting of umbilical multiple fluid transfer jumpers, electrical lines and tension wire, in the event the DP surface vessel drifts off-station. As an integral part of either a workover tool or dedicated emergency disconnect package, Webtool EDT guillotine cutter is a simpler and quicker emergency disconnection than more complex multi-line stabplate systems. It offers considerable weight savings compared with other emergency disconnect systems, and is easily retrofit to intervention systems. Within a well intervention emergency disconnect package, the umbilical is connected to a sacrificial hose and cable bundle, and securely positioned in the mouth of the Webtool EDT emergency cutter. This ensures the umbilical is severed in the correct place, within seconds. Webtool EDT is part of the Webtool range of high-performance cutting tools, designed and manufactured exclusively by Allspeeds Ltd. i. www.allspeeds.co.uk
This August UTEC Survey announced a significant step forward for its growing fleet of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) thanks to the completion of a series of field trials in conjunction with Teledyne Gavia in San Diego, California. The new partnership has completed operational testing of features designed to optimize AUVs for commercial survey applications. UTEC Survey has been using the Gavia AUVs for a variety of projects around the world since 2010 and they have become the single largest commercial user of the system with seven AUVs in the fleet. Low-noise platform capable of gathering high-quality data throughout the operating depth range. In addition, they offer a solution of higher productivity and the ability to survey in very shallow water of up to two metres. i. www.utecsurvey.com

E2S Warning Signals E2S Warning Signals, manufacturer of audible and visual warning devices, has announced the new D1x range of alarm horns, loudspeakers and integrated alarm horn/Xenon strobe warning units. The D1x employs the latest electronic technology and acoustic engineering, in robust, marine grade, LM6 aluminium enclosures. Designed to create the most effective warning signals available for use in Class I/II Division 1, Zone 1 and 2 environments, the UL/cULsapproved alarm horns and combined units are available with traditional directional flare horns or E2S’s omnidirectional radial horns that generate a uniform 360-degree sound dispersion. The powerful 117 and 125dB(A) alarm horns feature four remotely selectable alarm stages/channels with positive or negative line stage/channel switching. They provide a choice of 64 alarm tones, including many conforming to national and international standards. Multiple-alarm horns, when powered from the same source, are automatically synchronised. i. www.e2s.com
VBMS (a VolkerWessels & Boskalis company) completed the repair of an inter-array cable at Trianel Windpark Borkum phase 2. The scope of work included the removal of the defective cable, and installation, burial, terminations and testing of a replacement cable. The vast experience of the vessel crew with both export and array cable installation over the last six years resulted in the total operation taking less than 48 hours, form arrival to departure. The work was executed in the German Bight by cable-laying vessel Stemat Spirit. VBMS CEO Arno van Poppel: “We are very pleased that besides installation projects, we are partnering with more and more clients on repair projects. With this cable repair VBMS contract, both Trianel and the insurance companies BOOTH NO. have shown their confidence in VBMA as a total 10.023 solutions provider. OFFSHORE ENERGY i. www.vbms.com
No-latency/full-HD dome cameras Siqura, global supplier of advanced video surveillance solutions, announced last May the availability of two PTZ dome cameras for harsh marine environments. The ExPLORE HSD870H3MDC is designed for safe areas, while the ExPLORE HSD870H3EXP-MDC has an explosionprotected housing for use in hazardous areas (Zone 1). Both types give operators a real-time overview of mission-critical operations in the most extreme conditions. Having the ability to monitor operations without interruption is vitally important in the marine, oil and gas industry. The two camera types provide users with full-HD 1080p video quality at 60 frames per second. i. www.siqura.com

Looking back and thinking ahead SPE Offshore Europe 2015, held in Aberdeen from September 8 to 11, sent out a very clear message that the oil and gas industry has a future for many years to come. The theme of the 2015 event, Inspiring The Next Generation, allowed the industry to address the technical, business and people challenges it faces now and in the future. At the heart of this is the need to attract and encourage the next generation of talent into the industry, the event organisation reported in a concluding press release. “One of the challenges facing the industry is inspiring the next generation,” said Charles Woodburn, CEO of Expro and Technical Chairman of SPE Offshore Europe 2015. “I hope that the honest and open conversation we have had over the last few days will lead to real progress in this area. While we don’t have all the answers yet, it’s important we take this dialogue and turn it into a clear framework that can be delivered by the industry as a whole.” Attendance figures remained very strong at 55,947 with delegates drawn from 104 countries, the second highest attendance in the long history of the show. A record 1,535 global organisations from 44 countries exhibited this year, showcasing their products, services and expertise. This included 336 companies exhibiting at the event for the first time. The sold-out space covered 27,228 m2, with more inside space than ever before. Over the four days of the world’s largest upstream oil and gas conference and exhibition outside North America, around 5,000 visitors attended the
conference plenary session, eleven keynote sessions, 80 SPE technical paper presentations, and daily topical lunches and breakfast briefings. Stephen Graham, Chief Operations Officer for the SPE, added: “The conference programme successfully addressed a number of relevant industry priorities, incorporating the theme of Inspiring The Next Generation. Combined with a busy show floor where exhibitors met with existing and potential customers, I believe SPE Offshore Europe 2015 has been a great success.” The next SPE Offshore Europe will be held in Aberdeen from 5 to 8 September 2017. One of the new features announced for the next event will be the Decommissioning Zone 2017.
Attract and encourage the next generation of talent into the industry.
