you, just keep reading. Anyone who’s been in the Dutch south recently will know what I mean.

Offshore industry’s heartland – the southern Zeeland coast in the Netherlands. (For our international readers I should point out that ‘deep south’ in the Dutch distance scale is only an hour’s drive from Rotterdam.) A skyline currently dominated by the Rowan Viking rig at Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen, and soon the legs of Van Oord’s Aeolus at Verbrugge Terminals, jack-up vessels and barges for Belgian, German and UK wind projects, heavy lift barges and Heerema Vlissingen’s massive jacket fabrication for Statoil. So it’s not without good reason that this magazine, Offshore Industry, is based here.

Of course, the North Sea connects us all – Esbjerg to Hartlepool, Aberdeen to Stavanger. As you read this, I’ll be in Glasgow for RenewableUK’s Global Offshore Wind 2014. On my list are Harland & Wolff. At the Belfast yard, the engineering phase for fabrication of E.On’s Humber Gateway substation jacket continued, with completion due mid year. Meanwhile, exhibitor FoundOcean’s Managing Director Jim Bell recently introduced offshore structures expert Naval Sondhi who leads the company’s strengthening, modification and repair (SMR) design services division. The Glasgow show is also a chance to look past the horizon, for example a pan-European consortium led by the French wind specialist ASAH LM is developing Spinfloat, a novel 6MW floating vertical axis wind turbine, mounted on GustoMSC’s semi-submersible Tri-Floater. Just one of the many innovations undoubtedly on show.

One thing we know down south – it’s important to take time out.

On the Cover The Netherlands-based grid operator TenneT recently saw its latest offshore converter platform, BorWin beta, installed in the German Bight. The 12,000t, 72 x 54 x 25m platform is expected to be operational in 2015. The capacity of the total BorWin 2 connection (offshore converter platform, HVDC export cable and onshore converter station) will supply electricity for the equivalent of 800,000 households, generated at wind farms including Global Tech 1. Jacking the Overdick designed self-installing BorWin beta platform, which was built at Nordic Yards, took 2 days. The operation involved towing the platform directly over its 2,700t jacket substructure and raising the platform using a temporary hydraulic system to its position 20m above the surface.

Amrumbank West Project on Course E.On’s construction of Amrumbank West wind farm in the North Sea reached an important milestone. The offshore transformer station is now in place. The largest single technical component of the project weighs approximately 3,000t. It consists of a foundation anchored to the seafloor and a topside structure housing transformers and electrical

switching equipment. The transformer station will be operated from the wind farm’s service station on Helgoland.

Earlier this year DBR Generatorsets successfully completed commissioning and start-up of its custom-built auxiliary power package for the Amrumbank West wind farm substation.

Offshore Application Ropes South Korea-based DSR is one of the global suppliers of wire ropes and fibre ropes. Recently they introduced their most innovative products for offshore application, such as OceanMax (synthetic rope), PowerMax (wire rope) and other current innovative products. Lately, DSR has worked on an offshore project in Brazil, where they provided MBL 3,300m slings.

Due to a growing focus on safety related to subsea lifting operations, DNV GL has established a Joint Industry Project to develop practical methods for reducing the risks and lifetime cost of steel wire ropes for subsea lifting applications. Fourteen industry players have already signed up. The new methods for integrity management of steel wire ropes will form the basis for documentation of the safety and reliability of integrated systems according to DNV-OS-E407, throughout the service life of the rope until it is duly discarded.

Re-instating the MV Transshelf

PD Ports Welcomes McDermott McDermott has taken an option on a site to operate as a pipe spool base at the Port of Hartlepool which is owned and operated by PD Ports. The site at Hartlepool, of approximately 30 acres, will allow McDermott to assemble long pipe stalks that will be spooled to their pipe-laying vessel for offshore oil and gas work. The facility, which is expected to be fully operational in 2015, will form an important part of McDermott’s portfolio enabling them to expand into new markets.

Van der Vlist recently received an order to coordinate the receipt of eight substructures and eight grillage elements in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The substructures, weighing between 200 and 220t per unit, are used as jacking system on the vessel MV Transshelf to help place big oil platforms on their final position offshore. The platform was delivered to Nigeria for Total E&P’s project Ofon Phase 2, after which the Dockwise vessel returned with the equipment to Rotterdam where it was prepared and re-instated to a clean condition in order to get the ship ready for another job.

New CEO for Decom North Sea

HVAC specialists Heinen & Hopman have announced a merger that takes them a step closer in their ambitions of expanding a global network. Gulf of Mexico-based LeBlanc & Associates will bring access to a wider market, both geographically and in terms of sectors.

The subsidiary will continue to operate under the name LeBlanc & Associates LLC as part of the Heinen & Hopman Group.

The Board of Directors at Decom North Sea (DNS) announced the appointment of a new CEO to lead the organisation as it further strengthens its position as the representative body for the decommissioning industry. Nigel Jenkins will take up the post on 1 July and replaces Brian Nixon, who is retiring after playing an instrumental role in establishing DNS as the voice of the decommissioning sector.

Kaombo Subsea Contract The consortium comprising Heerema Marine Contractors and Technip, was awarded a major lump-sum contract by Total E&P Angola for the engineering, procurement, construction, installation and pre-commissioning for the SURF part of the Kaombo project, located in Block 32 offshore Angola in water depths up to 2,000m. Another consortium composed of Angoflex and DUCO, will provide the engineering, procurement and fabrication of 120km of umbilicals, the majority of which will be manufactured at the Angoflex facility in Lobito, Angola. The project will be one of the largest umbilical project to be manufactured in Lobito following a major expansion of the plant capabilities in 2012.

NEWS IN BRIEF Luchterduinen Export Cable Installation Cabling specialist VSMC will install and bury a 25km long export cable for the Eneco Luchterduinen wind farm in the Dutch North Sea, 23km off the coast between Noordwijk and Zandvoort. VSMC, the joint venture of VolkerWessels and Boskalis, has been awarded the contract by EPC contractor Van Oord Offshore Wind Projects. The project will be executed in September of this year using the in-house developed burial tool the Trenchformer and the newly built cable-laying vessel Ndurance.

Deep Helder Launched at De Hoop SeaMar’s Deep Helder was launched on 23 April from De Hoop’s Foxhol yard to the sounds of a shanty choir. The 65m DP2 vessel has been chartered by DeepOcean who will operate her for survey, IMR and trenching projects in oil and gas and renewable markets. She is designed to comply with high environmental and comfort standards for up to 52 on board personnel. Deep Helder is to be equipped with an offshore crane, survey and ROV system.

DeepOcean have selected Saab Seaeye’s new Leopard ROV. Rick Green, Regional Manager Netherlands at DeepOcean: “For our application the Leopard gives us the equivalent capability of a much larger hydraulic work class vehicle – and its eleven thrusters means it can handle strong currents – and that’s important to us.”

STEEL HAD already been cut at SOEM’s Indonesian and Singapore facilities for the platform deck late last year. This was followed, a day later, with field operator Det norske’s Executive Chairman, Sverre Skogen, pushing the button for the first cut at Saipem’s Sardinia yard. irst oil is anticipated from the Ivar Aasen field during the final quarter of 2016.

At that stage operators Det norske’s share of production will be approximately 16,000 boe/d, rising to 23,000 boe/d at plateau in 2019.

This is Det Norske’s first project as a major operator, with a 35 percent interest in the field. The other partners in the field development are Statoil with a 50 percent share and Bayerngas Norge with 15 percent. The Ivar Aasen field consists of three discoveries – Ivar Aasen and West Cable, which will be developed during the project’s first phase and the Hanz field, which will form the second phase. Together the three fields are expected to yield a total of 158 million barrels over a 20 year period. The total value of investment in the field development is in the region of EUR 3.3 billion.

Saipem are also handling the transport and installation of the fabricated components, ensuring that the platform deck can be lifted onto the jacket at the right time. It is envisaged that Saipem will install the jacket during the first 6 months of 2015 and lift the deck around one year later.

The development is located approximately 175km west of Karmøy between Southern Viking Graben and Utsira High in the northern North Sea. The production platform is to be positioned above the Ivar Aasen reservoir and the well for West Cable will also be drilled from the platform.

by Apply Leirvik. They are constructing the living quarters in three modules, which they will complete in 2015.

The aluminium living quarters will consist of seven decks, over a total deck space of 3,300m2, containing 70 single cabins, a helideck

The engineering, fabrication and installation of the many elements of the Ivar Aasen field represent a truly international spread of involvement. This goes further still if all subcontractors involved are taken into consideration.

e’re proud of the fact that we have mastered the technology and are capable of performing these complex operations to connect offshore wind farms… in the German North Sea. For all projects scheduled at this point… we are well on top of things.” These were the words of electricity transmission system operator TenneT’s CEO, Mel Kroon, recently, as he described his company’s faith in their ability to connect the energy from offshore wind farms in the German Bight to the mainland grid.

New Record

In May this year the BorWin beta platform was installed by Siemens nearly 100 km north-north-west of the island of Borkum.

The platform had left Nordic Yards shipyard in Warnermünde in August last year but, the company reported, “… bad weather meant that it could not be installed last year and had to lie in Rotterdam until April.”

TenneT are planning a total of nine offshore convertor platforms connected by over 4,000km of land and submarine cables.

meant it could be towed from the yard to the field without requiring a barge. On site the topsides was positioned over the preinstalled 2,700t jacket substructure and cable tower. Once in position six legs were lowered onto the subsea pile heads and the topsides was jacked up to the required 20m elevation using a temporary hydraulic system.

The jacking system was scaled according to the weight of the topsides meaning installation could take place in one go without the need for expensive offshore lift operations. The 13,400t weight of the topsides makes this a record for selfinstalling platforms.

BorWin beta, when operational, will convert 800MW electricity, sufficient to power 80,000 households.

Learning Curve

In the past, however, things have not always been so smooth and there have been a number of significant delays. Perhaps it’s not surprising – after all the technology involved in connecting the energy from wind farms so far out to sea is innovative and, to a point, still in its infancy. The initial projects of this sort of wind operation have been a learning curve, not only for system operators such as TenneT, but also to the subcontractors responsible for fabrication and installation activities. www. o f f s h o r e - i n d u s t r y.eu

Remote Control

On projects in other areas of the North Sea such technological developments have not been necessary to date, as the turbines are located close enough to land to ensure that any energy loss in connecting to the grid is minimal.

The distance of energy generation from the mainland has required TenneT’s use of HVDC technology in order to maintain the amount of electricity generated. The convertors receive an alternating current and convert it to a direct one before sending it ashore.

Currently TenneT are the only company connecting offshore wind farms to the mainland grid in such a way. The company aims to develop connection capacity of 7,109MW by 2020 – more than enough to meet the German Federal Government renewable energy targets and sufficient to power 7 million households. To reach this goal TenneT are planning a total of nine offshore convertor platforms connected by over 4,000km of land and submarine cables.

Fast Jacket Fabrication Heerema Fabrication Group say there timely delivery of the HelWin beta jacket was a direct result of their fabrication driven engineering process and their optimisation of the fabrication process – constructing the jacket in the most time and safety efficient manner. A large part of this was the construction of the jacket in two horizontal pieces, which were brought together vertically for completion and onward transportation.

The timely delivery of the jacket entailed 175,000 man-hours of work without a single lost-time incident. By the end of March the jacket was ready and loaded aboard Heerema’s barge. Sister company Heerema Marine Contractors are performing the offshore transportation and installation of the jacket with their SSCV, Thialf.

In the meantime the company’s expertise in fabricating components for this sector continues with HFG’s Zwijndrecht facility entering the final phases of fabricating the 10,200t topside for the same project. The topside is scheduled for delivery in summer this year. i. www.heerema.com

Fabrication Optimisation

An example of a good response to the challenges of the HVDC segment of the offshore wind sector is Heerema Fabrication Group’s (HFG) construction of the jacket for the HelWin beta convertor platform for

Siemens. The jacket is one of the most important components in TenneT’s HelWin offshore grid connection. The 4,500t 62 x 42.5 x 42m jacket was constructed by HFG at their site in Vlissingen, the Netherlands, in just 6 months starting October last year.

Another Dutch company that has experience in the engineering and fabrication of HVDC connection technology is the IV-Groep.

Belgium-based Iemants have recently commissioned the group for the design of two topsides for convertor platforms to be installed 45km off the German coast at Nordeney at Dong Energy’s Gode Wind 01 and 02 offshore wind farms. Each of the topsides will weigh approximately 1,250t.

Team Effort

The DolWin beta convertor platform, which is close to completion at Dubai Drydocks World, shows what can be achieved when multiple project partners work together for optimal results. TenneT awarded the contract to supply the power to ABB, and Norwegian company Aibel to build and outfit the self-installing platform.

Construction was subcontracted to Dubai Drydocks World and it was here, with the assistance of heavy lift specialists ALE, that the topside integration took place in December last year.

The integration involved the lifting of the 10,000t platform from the bottom of the dock to a height of 52.8m. The substructure was then moved into position beneath the topside and the two were mated together.

The operation required months of planning and cooperation between the respective partners.

Cable Conversion

Once onto the cable installation phases, it is crucial that the flow is maintained. TenneT have commissioned energy and telecom cable specialist the Prysmian Group for a total of seven projects to date. Resulting from this Prysmian are providing complete cable systems for projects in all four of TenneT’s designated clusters off the coast of Germany.

Prysmian have also been perfecting their technology to meet the requirements of HVDC installations. A factor of this has been the conversion of their cable laying vessel, the Cable Enterprise, from a moored barge www. o f f s h o r e - i n d u s t r y.eu

to a DP2 vessel able to use its own propulsion within the work site, without the need for a tug boat.

The vessel became part of the Prysmian Group in November 2012 with the acquisition of Global Marine Systems Energy Limited, the team of which has become Prysmian Powerlink Services (PPLS). Since then PPLS has been active in the field of submarine cable and systems installation, covering project management, cable laying and jointing and production.

Insourced Installation

Speaking of the vessel conversion and how it would streamline performance Marcello Del Brenna, CEO of PPLS, said, “Our objective is to have a more comprehensive control over the supply chain by insourcing a greater part of the installation work and extending our installation range... The group has been aiming at expanding its ability to offer turnkey products and services, including design, manufacture and installation, to the offshore wind farms growing market for some time and now it is investing again in this field.”

Coordination of the BorWin3 project will be managed from Prysmian’s Hamburg offices, but will incorporate production from the group’s production sites in Finland and France.

Prysmian’s previous project experience will be invoked as the cables are to be laid parallel to the route they were previously commissioned by TenneT to follow for the DolWin3 project. This requires expertise and a cautious approach as the route covers environmentally protected areas such as the Ems Estuary. Single-blade installation is, most likely, going to make the task of installing tomorrow’s giant turbines a far easier and lower-cost proposition.

T

he blades of offshore wind turbines are typically pre-assembled into a single rotor component before being loaded onto a vessel and sailed out to their final destination. However, as rotor diameters approach 200m, common installation techniques are due for change. Even the smallest of such rotors makes heavy demands on quayside loading space and cranes.

Reaching Out

As things get larger, there’s the reach problem, for example. If a rotor is so big that when assembled you can’t reach its centre, you need auxiliary cranes at the quayside to move it closer to the vessel.

As soon as a rotor is assembled it needs to be secured against storms. The bigger the rotor, the greater the survival measures required.

Then there’s loading. To take a full load of turbines on board you often need to change the vessel’s position a number of times, meaning time and safety implications.

A2Sea recommends single-blade installation for a variety of reasons, the most compelling being the huge assembly, manoeuvering and transport demands of a 200m rotor diameter – the equivalent of two soccer pitches being lifted, rotated and loaded onto a vessel.

Single blades instead of rotor ‘stars’ also reduce storage requirements on board the vessel, cutting down trips to and from port.

The Future

A lot of effort has gone into infrastructure to support single-blade installation. A2Sea determined key requirements for installation. For example, rotors can be lifted in a single lift, raising three individual blades

requires three lifts. For each lift, it is necessary to rotate the hub to accommodate the blade at an accessible angle. Such lifts are not particularly difficult, and don’t present additional safety concerns.

Initially turbine manufacturers needed additional design work to ensure that their hubs could rotate to accommodate single blade installation.

Single blades don’t need taller cranes, and the lifting operation is less complex than a rotor lift. There’s nothing that can’t be done with full rotor installation – but it’s not going to be the easiest, safest or most affordable path for the future.

Getting in and out of port with a 130m transverse load is no easy task either.

Continuing with full rotors and much larger blade sizes would mean things are going to get worse.

To handle the demands of larger turbines, the industry has had to reevaluate.

A key principle of cost reduction has been the fewer lifts and installations offshore the better. But A2Sea has discovered that the logistical challenges at port level destroy the business cases behind such approaches.

A second contract award by RWE within a year.

ack-Up Barge have previously expanded with new builds, making Odin their first acquisition. The company are renaming the barge JB 119 and are expanding their fleet further with a new build to be known as JB 120. The JB 119 platform, 46.1m long by 30m wide and 4.6m high, has 60m legs that enable operation in water depths of up to 45m. It features onboard accommodation for up to 40 persons.

Neat Fit

Nordsee Ost offshore wind farm. JB 114, which previously provided accommodation for RWE during the construction of the Gwynt y Môr wind farm, will be home to up to 40 people throughout the project.

Mr Hardon said of the contract award, “Jack-Up Barge is proud to be awarded a second contract award by RWE within a year. After the successful completion of the Gwynt y Môr project, Jack-Up Barge is once again looking forward to working with one

He says the purchase was a natural one, when the opportunity arose, considering the quality of the platform. “She was well maintained, in good condition and with an almost new crane.” The Liebherr BOS 7500 Heavy Lift Crane lifts 300t at 15m. The maximum reach of the boom is 84m to accommodate offshore wind installations.

International Action

Mr Hardon says that the platform’s specifications make her suitable for use as a coastal unit carrying out civil construction work or for small offshore wind installation projects. Jack-Up Barge are planning to put the platform into international service and have already secured a contract for her in South America. She was due to sail at the beginning of May for a construction project that is expected to take 8 months. In the past Hochtief employed the platform for foundation pile installation, offshore substation construction and pile driving for harbour construction.

Safe Access

Marcel Sunier, RWE Innogy Project Director for Nordsee Ost, explained how the platform would connect the workers to the substation: “With this platform we are providing a comfortable home for our employees… and safe access to their place of work. The jack-up legs will lift the platform out of the water right beside our substation. As a result , the vessel will be in an elevated position and therefore won’t be exposed to the waves. A gangway

connecting the accommodation unit with our substation will be placed 25m above the water surface.”

As well as accommodation for 40 personnel the platform offers 1,000 m2 deck space, a main crane with 300t lifting capacity and a helicopter landing platform to facilitate flexible crew transfers.

aarten Sickler is on his way to Rio de Janeiro. While the Technical Director of the Central Industry Group (CIG) division CIG Maritime Technology is in Brazil to discuss new build plans, he may cross paths with the breakthrough offshore cargo supplier Jaguar that he helped design.

Mr Sickler says the rebranding exercise resolves the long-standing confusion between the two Vuyk Engineering companies in the Netherlands – the Rotterdam company controlled by IHC Merwede and the other a part of CIG based in the northern Dutch town of Groningen.

“At the same time it’s not only engineering we’re doing,” Mr Sickler notes. “We do a lot of maritime technology projects, not only vessel design but also seakeeping, rigs, fatigue and lifecycle prediction, special calculations. It’s much more about maritime technology. We have all that expertise in house. That’s why we changed our name to CIG Maritime Technology.”

New Shipbuilding Portfolio

The repositioning also opens up the offshore shipbuilding market to CIG. “That’s the beauty of our CIG conglomerate at the moment,” Mr Sickler says. “We have the organisation and we have the knowledge. We look at financial engineering together with the customer and then sensible engineering solutions. We’re looking closely at the client’s requirements and their wishes – vessels designed fit-for-purpose.”

Recent examples of these projects include the CIG OSV-100 (pictured), which is a 100m light construction vessel with 150t AHC subsea crane, designed to client requirements for shallow draught and calm area operations.

Another design, the CIG DSV-60 is a dive support and accommodation vessel with extra storage capacity thanks to a cargo hold and free deck space. She is also designed with a shallow operational draught.

And, designed principally for GoM operations, CIG’s small and efficient PSV has tank capacity and covered deck mud mixing laboratory – not designed for Force 8 operations, but the perfect fit to support ageing drill rigs in calm seas.

owns the other four ships built to the CIG 6000 GC-E design. The vessels were introduced as a multipurpose cargo vessel, also suitable as a feeder for offshore construction. With low rolling motions for discharging cargo while holding station, plus a large 80m box hold and a track record of low maintenance, the design has attracted a lot of interest, Mr Sickler confirms.

“She outperforms all the existing vessels with volume and ease of handling and everybody is surprised by the scale of economics. The day rates make these vessels much more efficient than what [charterers] are used to.”

Stable Platform, Less Compensation

GeoSea was an early adopter of the feeder concept, chartering the Abis Dundee to deliver large diameter jacket piles to the self-elevating platform Goliath in the Baltic Sea. “In offshore construction work, when you need to supply large equipment items, you need a big feeder ship,” Mr Sickler explains.

“And especially for the hook up operation. If you want to transfer to the jack-up or the rig or the installation site, you need something that doesn’t roll too much.”

Sister ship Abis Dover was also active for a GeoSea project, removing test piles. She was fitted with a large crawler crane and an ROV and LARS spread – illustrating the design’s application for not only feedering, but also offshore construction.

ROV over the side. The ship’s had an additional 20-person TLQ for larger crew capacity.”

The same unique ship motions that make the CIG 6000 GC-E design highly suited to offshore feedering also make the vessels comfortable for personnel accommodated on board and improve the performance of heave-compensated equipment, including offshore access bridges.

“If you have a low deck vessel like a supplier, you have a high stability index. That means short roll periods. And these platforms are already 20m up from sea level. So if you have a low deck vessel, the accelerations [at the transfer bridge height] are very high. If you have more freeboard like the Jaguar type of vessel, you can sail with a low stability index, and that means you get less accelerations and motions on the transfer bridge… Less accelerations means less compensation, more uptime.”

Not Your Normal Supplier

Anchors & Mooring Winches CIG’s individual group members remain focused on their respective markets. For example, Ship’s Equipment Centre Groningen (SEC) (now sporting the identifier ‘A CIG Company’ in their logo) has seen increasing business for the offshore industry in recent years, providing anchor handling and four-point mooring equipment. Particularly popular is the company’s Ten Horn brand of electric frequency controlled mooring winches, with pulling force capacity up to 100t. “From PSVs, pipelay vessels and all kinds of offshore vessels, they’re using these systems,” says Martin Cremers, Head of Sales at SEC-Groningen, “[Fourpoint mooring] is more required these days, we see more offshore support vessels and diving support vessels are asking for these kinds of products. One reason is for safety reasons during diving operations.”

In oil and gas, Saipem utilised Jaguar to transfer pipes to a pipelay vessel in Brazilian waters, using the rig’s own heavy lift capacity. “The crane capacity is already arranged offshore,” Mr Sickler says. “It’s already there. Contractors just need something to bring it in. Because of her size, [the CIG 6000 GC-E design] can bring 4,000t of pipe in one go. If she was a normal supplier, she couldn’t take more than 1,000t. So she can replace three or four vessels. And even then if you want to transfer the pipes, she’s a much more stable platform. So your uptime is much higher.”

VERSATILITY IS THE KEY TO OVER-CAPACITY IN OFFSHORE WIND

Riding Out the Storm Ruud Lievaart of Sima Charters is hopeful that the UK Round 3 offshore wind projects about to get underway will improve the situation of current over-capacity in construction and support vessels.

Despite this well-known issue, he tells Offshore Industry’s Ben Littler that Sima’s versatility ensures the company’s continued strength.

“The workboat market is getting harder at the moment,” says Mr Lievaart, Managing Director of the tender service and crew boat chartering company.

“The demands for higher vessel and crew quality are increasing as are those for improved health and safety.

Of course, these are good things, but they do mean higher costs for operators – right at the time when day rates are dropping due to over-capacity.”

No Problem

The reason for the declining rates is an over subscription for new built offshore wind related vessels, based on the amount of anticipated projects in the North Sea. Due to a combination of factors, including political ambiguity and investor

uncertainty, however, many of these are being delayed or cancelled.

Mr Lievaart says Sima are more than capable of meeting the increasing requirements of clients.

“This is no problem for us as we have already got all of our vessels ISM certified (International Safety Management Code). This entailed increased costs so, naturally we were hoping the day rates would increase, but in the wind industry this is not happening.”

A Little Different

Even without Round 3 Mr Lievaart says Sima have reasons to be optimistic and indicates that everything is going positively for the company currently. He says that

a part of this success is down to Sima ordering monohull vessel builds, as opposed to the catamarans widely used in offshore wind projects.

“I don’t want to go all the way with catamarans – they can only do offshore wind. I have more with monohulls, they are generally more versatile. I want to be a little different. With monohulls we are able to do ship-to-ship or offer a crew boat, we can also serve the oil and gas industry. Because of this things are OK for us – we are not totally dependent on offshore wind.”

Additionally he points out that monohulls have a reputation for comfort. “Crews are less likely to experience seasickness on a monohull. Especially our newest vessel, which has been fitted with a Seakeeper stabilisation system. That seems to do the trick!”

An example of Sima’s versatility is the company’s supply of vessels, in recent years, to dredging projects. Mr Lievaart says though, that for now at least, the work in this field is minimal. “We were doing a lot in dredging, but there are ups and downs with this. The current economic situation,

coupled with the fact that there are no major projects in Europe right now means things are a little quiet. Maasvlakte 2 was a good project, but the dredging part of that is over now.”

Smaller Vessels & Costs

Mr Lievaart acknowledges there are advantages to chartering catamarans.

“Many tender requests are for catamarans, so that can make it difficult to get the work, but once we’re in we get more jobs because we make the clients happy.”

He says that, though the catamarans undoubtedly have their uses they can lead to unnecessary raised costs. “The reason catamarans are in such demand is that they can take more on the foredeck and that is often needed in offshore wind, but not all the time,” he explains. “People charter these vessels because they need the capacity, but when you see them in action, often such capacity is needed only for a small part of the project. What this means is that the smaller vessels chartered by Sima can, most of the time, do much the same work as the larger vessels at a lower cost.

Interesting Industry

Mr Lievaart says that even with Round 3 there may not be the same call for crew boats as there has in the past, particularly as project activity gets further from the shore. “People may try and avoid having so many crew vessels around – it makes sense when you consider accommodation modules, DP and Ampelmann. Clients will try to avoid having 10 - 15 crew boats in the field, but crew boats will still be needed.

He admits that only time will really tell what the outcome may be and that all of this is just speculation. “Who knows what the solution is? It’s an interesting industry.” i. www.simacharters.com

Gudrun Good to Go STATOIL PLATFORM STARTS PRODUCING

IT HAS BEEN A HIGHLY ANTICIPATED OIL AND GAS FIELD, AND NOW IT’S UP AND RUNNING. SINCE APRIL THIS YEAR THE GUDRUN FIELD, LOCATED IN SECTOR PL025 IN THE NORWEGIAN North Sea, is producing from a maximum of seven wells. And that’s quite an accomplishment since it was first discovered in 1975 and took around 16.5 million man hours to develop in harsh and sometimes icy conditions. Also, the Statoil-operated platform had an impressive number of suppliers from many countries.

T

he name of the field, Gudrun, originates from Norwegian mythology. It means ‘God’s secret lore’, where lore stands for ‘knowledge gained through tradition or anecdote’. Well, a lot of knowledge was put into this project, for example by the partners of the platform: Statoil, GDF Suez and OMV. Gudrun is a high temperature/high pressure field, and the need for new drilling technology was one of the reasons why these reserves were left in the bank for such a long time. The reservoir is located at a depth of 4,200 to 4,700m at a pressure of 860 bar and a temperature of 150°C. Statoil expects to recover 184 million boe from the field.

Complex & Demanding

“We’ve taken a long time to understand this reservoir, which is complex and demanding,” stated Jan Einar Malmin, Statoil’s venture manager for the field, a few years ago. And back in 2011, it still kept secrets,

according to Mr Malmin. “The gap between the highest and lowest forecast is unusually wide in Gudrun’s case.”

However, it is now expected to achieve a peak production of about 90,000 boe/day. The Gudrun platform will produce from seven wells for an estimated period of 11 years. Operator Statoil has a 51 percent interest in the field, while partner GDF Suez holds 25 percent and the Austrian OMV 24 percent.

The decision to explore the Gudrun field, which contains oil for two thirds and gas for one third, was taken at the height of the financial crisis. The plan for development and operation was submitted in 2010. At that time, Gudrun was Statoil’s only mega-project, but now it is the first in a long line of field developments by Statoil. The field and its operation platform have been delivered on time and below the estimated costs. Part of that has to do with the global strategy which was chosen for this project, according to Statoil. The span of suppliers and partners stretches out all over the globe, from Japan,

For instance, two of the three modules (M20 and M30) from the topdeck were built in Thailand, the third module (M10) came from Haugesund in Norway, where the deck was assembled. Teams from Aibel facilities in Haugesund, Asker, Singapore and Thailand have all been working together on this specific job. The project embraced EPC of the platform deck and processing facility, as well as pairing with the steel jacket. Aibel considered this job as “one of the largest projects the company has ever delivered”.

While Dockwise signed for the transport from Thailand in 2012, Saipem was appointed to lift and transport the 10,600t topsides module into position atop the Gudrun jacket, which is positioned some 55km north of the Sleipner installations.

The jacket, weighing an impressive 7,400t, was constructed by Kvaerner and handed over to Statoil in July 2011. That delivery was a ‘scoop’ for the Norwegian company, since it was de-merged from Aker Solutions in the same month that year. The jacket for Statoil was however the 35th in a series of jackets delivered form their yard in Verdal.

The EPC contract included engineering, procurement and fabrication.

The crew operating the platform lives in quarters built by Apply Leirvik, who also constructed the helideck. Both are made of aluminium, a material selected because of its low weight, minimum maintenance and environmentally friendly character. The living quarters cover some 2,000m2 which offers space for 40 single cabins, an administration centre, a central control room and other necessary facilities required for operation of an offshore camp.

Existing Infrastructure

The Gudrun platform’s global scale of fabrication is one of the reasons it will be successful. But there is more to it. The use of already existing infrastructure for the transportation and processing of oil and gas also contributes in a major way. Oil and gas from Gudrun is sent to Sleipner, where it will be processed before the oil is sent on to Kårstø and the gas to Europe, all through existing pipelines tied in to the Sleipner A platform.

“The Gudrun concept is a win-win situation,” says Arne Sigve Nylund, Executive Vice President, Development and Production Norway, from Statoil. “By using existing infrastructure, the Gudrun Development costs less and Sleipner gains an extra customer. Gudrun’s start-up came at the perfect time.”

As part of the Gudrun project, modifications have also been carried out on Sleipner and at Kårstø. Gudrun has become the first new field that Statoil operates from the Stavanger region since Sleipner in 1993.

Mr Nylund: “It’s good to see it joining old giants like Statfjord, Snorre and Sleipner.

Fugro Subsea Services’ owned and operated Q1400 trenching system has been mobilised and fully integrated onto the FSSL operated multipurpose subsea construction vessel, Fugro Saltire. The Q1400 trenching system is deployed from the Fugro Saltire by A Frame LARS and incorporates a unique decktransfer skidding system, to enable mode changes safely at sea without the requirement of any additional craneage or handling.

The unit is rated to be safely deployed in up to sea-state 6. The Q1400 trenching system consists

of a common trenching module and two separate tracked jetting and mechanical cutting skids. In jetting mode the trencher can be operated with either 2 or 3m jetting swords and is capable of accommodating products of up to 900mm in diameter. The sophisticated jetting system also has the capability for backwashing/eduction and back filling of seabed material while jet trenching.

IHC Engineering Business is in the final stages of a 2-year project to develop its latest subsea vehicle, which has been part financed by the European Regional Development Fund. Hi-Traq is the worlds first tracked trenching ROV specifically designed for power cable burial in offshore wind farms. The harsh conditions at offshore wind farm sites dictated the basic requirements for Hi-Traq.

The high wave loadings and strong currents at the seabed meant the

vehicle had to have a minimum weight to guarantee safe, accurate working and efficient trenching operations. To overcome the seabed topography, Hi-Traq uses a bogey type arrangement, which is more often associated with military tank designs. In April, Delta SubSea and FoundOcean signed a strategic agreement for services in the waters of Trindad, Tobago and Venezuela. Together with FoundOcean, Delta SubSea will offer the full range of subsea pipeline repair and rehabilitation techniques, including freespan correction, pipeline support and stabilisation and pipeline clamp operations. In addition, as part of Delta SubSea’s frame agreement with FMC Schilling, Delta SubSea finalised an order for an additional fleet of seven work-class ROV

systems expected for delivery in the first half of 2014. Deep Blue Engineering recently introduced the Shuttle Sub. The new lift and deployment system is a large payload-carrying ROV. The Shuttle Sub offers an efficient and cost-effective way to deploy heavy payloads – such as cables and umbilicals – to and from the seabed. Earth-Fixed Position

The helideck is driven by three actuators compensating two translations (sway and heave) and one rotation (roll) of the vessel. This ensures that the platform stays in an earth-fixed steady position and that the influence of sea-induced vessel motions will no longer be a limiting factor for offshore operations. The

helideck is made of aluminium – the lightweight material means minimal impact on the COG of the vessel, as well as low maintenance.

Increased Safety

According to the helideck’s designers, it can improve safety, reduce the costs of offshore operations and increase the window for offshore helicopter landings in rough conditions. This is seen as increasingly important to ensure that offshore personnel can carry out planned safety critical maintenance programmes on offshore installations, just as helicopter operations face tougher regulations.

In February the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)

announced a series of measures to increase the safety of offshore helicopter flights. The changes are the result of a comprehensive review of offshore helicopter operations undertaken in conjunction with the Norwegian CAA and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and advised by a panel of independent experts. NO COMPARISON FOR BARGE’S VERSATILITY

VESSELS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE ON THE MARKET ARE NOT AS VERSATILE AS REQUIRED – THAT WAS THE CONCLUSION OF AN INDEPENDENT market study commissioned by the Dutch Barge Company during the design of their new, unconventional OSV with DP capability – an Articulated Tug Barge.

“[The study’s conclusion] was a bit shocking for us,” says Wouter Hoek from the vessel’s design and engineering partner Hoek Naval Engineering. So the study – which covered offshore contractors in oil & gas as well as renewables – certainly gave the owners the confidence to proceed with their barge and tug design for a multipurpose OSV. Mr Hoek continues, “The list of design items that came out of it, in my opinion, it’s about a 95 percent match with what the market is looking for.”

At the time of writing, a number of contractors were considering charters for North Sea and Baltic operations following delivery of the first vessel in early 2015. The barge hull will be constructed in Poland and outfitted in the Netherlands, while the tug will be fully constructed in the Netherlands.

Modular & Multifunctional

since the late fifties, particularly in the Americas, Middle East and Far East for transportation of dry bulk and liquid bulk.

However, the concept of the ATB as a station holding OSV for Northern Atlantic and European waters came from Ewoud Visser at DUC Diving, the owners behind the Dutch Barge Company.

“The key feature of the vessel is its modular capability,” Mr Hoek says. “It can act individually as a barge and tug, or in combination as a full DP2 vessel.”

The multifunctional design makes the vessel suitable for a wide range of offshore applications – from accommodation support to turntable cable lay operations.

“You can’t really compare it to anything available now. But when we look at deck space, this design has 920m2 of clear deck in only 70m length. So you can compare the functionality with an OSV of 110m, but it’s not really a fair comparison. And when you w w w. o ffs h o re -i n d u s tr y. e u

look at the price that that Dutch Barge Company expects to put this on the market, well, there’s no comparison.”

Outside the Box

DUC Diving are offshore contractors with 30 years experience in the industry. They have chartered a lot of ships for their work, and regularly encountered problems with comfort and usability. Certain that it could be done better and at less cost, they started working on their own OSV. That’s when they met up with the young design firm Hoek Naval Engineering.

“It soon became clear that we had the same way of thinking,” Mr Hoek says. “Outside the box and beyond common practice.”

Hoek Naval Engineering put great effort into translating the market research into a design that ticks all the right boxes. “The vessel brought plenty of design challenges – building the barge to be comfortable in heavy seas and still have the capability to beach; to take a lot of heavy deck load and put in a moonpool. It has to be as voluminous as possible, but on the other hand the bow has to be faired. And not least www. o f f s h o r e - i n d u s t r y.eu

the electrical systems. When the tug and the barge are connected, they need to communicate for DP mode. That’s also been a very big technical challenge.”

The designers also had to ensure the barge could safely disconnect, disengaging the articulated coupling, and then go on tow even in rough weather. The modularity requirements also pushed the design of everything below deck. All the cabins can be removed via the hatch, freeing up the clear deck area below deck for other purposes.

“The ATB is nothing new, but the way we’re implementing it now is pretty new. Not all items are covered by ready-made rules and regulations. We got valuable input from Bureau Veritas on that side.”

Thrustmaster will supply the complete thruster package to outfit the vessel for DP class two operations. The vessel will utilise two azimuth thrusters, two retractable azimuth thrusters, and one Thrustmaster carbon steel tunnel thruster.

Questions about Safety

High insulation standards reduce vibration and noise. “Of course we’ve had some questions about safety,” Mr Hoek says, “So we’ve looked carefully at escape routes, and have created extra safety zones in the construction.”

Safety considerations throughout the development of the double hull vessel include monitoring equipment, alarm systems and lifeboats. “And the big advantage is that in a configuration like this the comfort level is pretty high even in pretty severe weather conditions. The PUQ deck is the largest offshore platform constructed by Lamprell and the sixth offshore fixed topside that they have delivered in 4 years. Lamprell CEO James Moffat commented: “The delivery of this latest offshore structure highlights Lamprell’s growing reputation in the new build offshore construction market and confirms our position as one of the few yards in the MENA region that has both the expertise and the capability to build such large scale North Sea projects.”

Landmark Project

The dimensions of the PUQ deck measure 98.5 x 46 x 58.8m, weighing 13,191.98t or, with grillage, temporaries and SPMTs, 15,511t. For the transportation and load out, ALE provided a total fleet of 512 axels on self-propelled modular trailers (SPMTs). The deck was transported 883m and took 4 hours for transport and 10 hours for load-out to complete.

Heavy Load

Guinness World Records has confirmed the delivery of the platform as the ‘Heaviest load moved by SPMTs’, measured at 13,191.98t. The award was confirmed and presented by the UAE Guinness World Records adjudicator Samer Khallouf at an event held at the Habtoor Grande Hotel in Dubai on 22 April 2014.

This beats the previous record achieved by Almajdouie Logistics Company of Saudi Arabia on 22 January 2012 with 4,891t.

In addition to the transportation and loadout, ALE provided a range of services including all engineering works, such as FEED studies and method statements, project management, mooring and assisting with the ballasting.

teams worked closely to make the project a success. With the completion and sail away of the PUQ deck, the team has completed 10 million man-hours without a single lost time incident on the combined well head and PUQ deck projects.

Big Discovery

Nexen’s Golden Eagle development is one of the biggest UK projects and discoveries of the past decade. An initial gross production of 70,000 boe/day is expected. The field is developed using two platforms – a wellhead platform and the PUQ deck – which will be connected by a 70m bridge.

The project is a GBP 2 billion investment with interests spread between Nexen Petroleum UK 36.54 percent, Maersk Oil North Sea UK 31.56 percent, Suncor Energy UK 26.69 percent and Edinburgh Oil and Gas 5.21 percent. First oil production is expected in late 2014.

Tiebacks

The Golden Eagle project is pursuing a number of tieback opportunities to develop near-term growth. In 2013 Nexen Petroleum UK received regulatory approval to develop

The 6,500t jacket set sail from the Heerema Vlissingen yard in the Netherlands. On arrival at the field the jacket was installed with the Saipem Heavy Lift Vessel S7000. The jacket has been secured to the sea bed by twelve 96” diameter piles driven some 50m deep into the sea floor. Subsea infrastructure, including oil and gas export pipelines, infield flowlines and associated subsea structures, were installed by Technip. The SOV design, called IMT972, has a LOA of 72.2m and conforms to the Clean Design classification requirements of DNV GL for wind farm service operation vessels. It can provide accommodation for up to 60 persons, including 22 crew, and is able to operate for 30 to 45 days on station and longer if replenished at sea.

NORWEGIAN OPERATOR SIEM OFFSHORE’S LATEST VESSEL HAS RECENTLY BEEN CHRISTENED SIEM MOXIE IN A NAMING CEREMONY AT THE PORT OF HAMBURG. E.On have chartered the vessel for operations at their Amrumbank West offshore wind farm in the German section of the North Sea, close to the island of Helgoland.

Her design draws on Siem Offshore’s wealth of experience within the offshore industry. E.On will use the vessel as a crew support boat at the project’s platforms and foundations, for submarine cable pull-in and terminations.

Siem Moxie is the first OSV with an Ulstein X-Bow to be

Extreme Safety & Efficiency

E.On Director of Offshore Wind Sven Utermöhlen explains that his company selected the vessel due to her safety features and economic feasibility. He said, “We chose the Siem Moxie because it will make our installation operations extremely safe and efficient.

In addition it will help make the construction of offshore wind farms more costeffective, thereby helping this technology move closer to market maturity.”

Siem Moxie’s low fuel consumption also ensures that her impact on the environment is minimal as

well as reducing the costs of operation.

First Project

In her first project, Siem Moxie will support the installation of the inner array grid submarine cable system at Amrumbank West. E.On commenced construction of the wind farm in January this year. When complete it will extend over 32km2. Eighty 3.6MW turbines will generate 288MW electricity, enough to power 300,000 households. Going with the ‘Flo’ FALMOUTH, UK-BASED MOJO MARITIME HAVE COME UP WITH A VESSEL DESIGN THAT PROMISES TO REVOLUTIONISE OFFSHORE CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE PROJECTS. The Hi Flo 4 (HF4), is able to operate in extreme tidal races, thereby extending operational windows and bringing down costs considerably. Beyond this Mojo have come up with a design that offers extreme versatility so that HF4 can be used for tidal energy, offshore wind and even oil and gas activities.

he main challenge facing the viability of tidal energy is cost. If the technology is to be widely applied the associated costs must come down significantly. HF4 is Mojo Maritime’s answer to this problem.

They have designed a state-of-the-art vessel with the capability to operate in extreme environments. HF4 is a DP vessel able to hold station in up to 10 knots of current – in comparison to other, existing vessels used for tidal energy projects that can only work during neap slack tide. The increased window of operational activity, Mojo say, can lower project costs by as much as 80 percent.

Turning the Tide

Her capabilities include installation, maintenance and decommissioning activities. Mojo have developed the vessel to install both monopile and tripod foundations. Using Bauer Renewables subsea drilling capabilities, HF4 can install a 2m diameter monopile in as little as 30 hours.

Once the subsea foundations are in place, HF4 can also install the turbine using her A-frame in combination with lifting frames.

Using the same equipment HF4 can easily and safely recover subsea turbines for maintenance or decommissioning purposes.

Although Mojo’s primary idea was to develop a vessel that could operate efficiently and safely in tidal races, what they have come up with is a design so versatile it can also be applied to other areas of the renewable energy sector.

Frontiers of Space

HF4 is a natural fit with offshore wind operations. Her catamaran configuration ensures she offers plenty of deck space. A deck extension is also available to the aft of

the vessel and deck space can be further increased via application of a cover to the deck opening.

As offshore wind projects get further from the shore, challenges arise in the provision of operations and maintenance services.

Mojo’s solution has been to design HF4 with the capacity to utilise a wide range of

Mojo’s design also incorporates a symmetric hull form, which is efficient in all directions.

The manoeuvrability this offers to the vessel’s performance means she can be employed for both inter-array trenching and cable laying activities.

Clean, Green & Lean

Another quality of HF4 and one which also helps to keep the costs in check, is her range of environmentally friendly features. The optimised hullform helps to considerably increase fuel efficiency for starters. HF4 is to be outfitted with four Voith Schneider Propellers, which offer reduced noise and

flow speed, further improving the vessel’s green credentials.

Realising the Vision

In January this year a milestone was reached in the development of this innovative new vessel. Mojo Maritime signed a memorandum of understanding with German company Hammonia Reederei to finance and build HF4. The two partners are currently looking for a yard to construct the vessel and for her first charter.

Richard Parkinson, Managing Director of Mojo, said of the agreement, “We are delighted to be working with Hammonia Reederei. They share our vision for the Hi Flo 4 vessel and the two companies have highly complementary skill sets.

Hammonia’s commitment to Hi Flo 4 demonstrates not only their confidence in the vessel, but also in the team that has brought the ship to this advanced design state.”

The agreement sees Mojo providing engineering and operating expertise alongside Hammonia’s track record in ship management and project development.

Hammonia, as part of the Döhle Group, will rely on Peter Döhle Schiffart’s competencies in chartering, crew management and insurance services.

here is one notable project that demonstrates how turret technology has evolved over the years while illustrating the need for disconnectable solutions. Back in 2008, Helix Energy began converting the Helix Producer 1 (HP1) into a Floating Production Unit (FPU) vessel for use on the Phoenix oil field, in the Gulf of Mexico.

side of the HP1. The FPU would still be able to use its DP systems to maintain its position above the subsea oil well without causing damage to the risers attached to the seabed. In the event of an oncoming storm it would allow for quick disconnection of the vessel from the risers. With the well rapidly closed off, the FPU can leave its location, ready to return with all infrastructure intact when weather conditions have improved.

It should be noted that back in 2008, the majority of drilling in the Gulf of Mexico was still conducted from fixed platforms.

Damage caused by bad weather or on-site emergencies significantly impacted the downtime and led to significant commercial loss. The Deepwater Horizon disaster in 2010 was one such emergency, the result of which prioritised the research and development of dynamically positioned FPUs and FPSOs using DTSs.

The technology from the HP1 project therefore played a crucial role in the response to the incident and made more operators incorporate similar systems into future projects.

Back to the Start

Turret technology systems are of increasing interest to those operating in the North Sea. The decommissioning costs associated with the removal of fixed assets are forcing operators to look for alternatives and stay flexible. Decision makers realise the need to invest in the technology that can move where business takes them. With the innovative DTS and FPSO technology, when the field is exhausted the connections to the wellheads are decommissioned and the

Immediate response

An important element of the DTS is the swivel which allows the FPSO or FPU to spin around the turret without damaging subsurface risers. The advantages of the DTS in emergency situations are clear – it allows for the simultaneous and rapid disconnection of all risers and umbilicals, safely shutting in the subsea wellhead. The vessel is completely free of the field with no spillage of hydrocarbons into the surrounding waters.

HP1’s bespoke DTS system became a crucial part of the Deepwater Horizon recovery operation because it was the only FPU in the region that could quickly disconnect and relocate to assist in the transportation of oil.

The system was designed to offer maximum flexibility to move from field to field with the minimum of infrastructure disruption. vessel is free to sail to the next oil field. This is ideal for many marginal fields around the world that, due to the current oil prices, are now economically viable. It is just like computers – a typical PC or desktop can only be of use to you at your desk – and it’s for this reason that the popularity of the iPad and tablets have soared allowing people to do their job wherever they go, be it on a train, at home and so on.

As a result, the next generation of projects are prepared with flexible solutions such as floating platforms and DTSs.

Partners in VPUs Recently, FES has entered into a strategic partnership with Amplus Technology – an offshore production specialist currently developing a fleet of Versatile Production Units (VPU). The vision is clear – to build a world-class fleet of VPUs that will service the needs of the global oil and gas industry. FES International will engineer a turret type DTS for the project. The new build VPU FPSO will have full dynamic position and weathervaning capabilities.

Improving the Marginals

It is not only at the end of an asset’s life or in an emergency situation where turret technology has an important role to play.

The system was originally developed in 2000 as an extended well test/early production solution for marginal fields in the North Sea. Technology offering a quick disconnectable process is essential in these scenarios yet remains relatively new to the industry.

These marginal fields are where the oil reservoirs at the time were deemed too small to be economically viable to recoup the initial outlay and day-to-day running cots of large fixed assets (oil rig platforms) or large fixed moored FPSOs. The system was designed to offer maximum flexibility to move from field to field with the minimum of infrastructure disruption. This has become more prevalent due to new technologies in oil extraction and maintained high price of oil during the economic recession, making marginal fields more viable.

In the conventional offshore platform float-over installation approach, it can take 4 - 6 weeks to prepare a barge for ballasting during the load-out and float-over of a topside. Different ballasting requirements for load-out and float-over often lead to the installation of two separate ballast systems.

In addition, in many cases separate contractors are hired for the installation and operation of each system.

Faster System Installation

The Mammoet Versatile Ballast System is easily installed, using one equipment set-up for both load-out and float-over operations, and fits any barge without the need for modifications. The ballast pumps are floatover ballast pumps. Their capacity is adaptable to purpose and ranges from 10,000 to 100,000t of water per hour.

It can be installed within 2 weeks, using a minimum of equipment, manpower and space. The main part of the installation can be performed on the quayside. Furthermore, the Versatile Ballast System takes up to 30 percent less deck space than the traditional method of two systems and needs less interfaces. The single set-up also significantly shortens the period for decommissioning of the system on the barge, ultimately saving on barge rental time.
