Editor’s note

The Potential of Energy This issue of Offshore Industry is largely dedicated to the Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference. This event, which will be taking place for the ninth time, will be the hotspot for everyone in the maritime business. When visiting the event, be aware of the new location. Of course, RAI Amsterdam will again be the venue, but this year you will find the exhibitors in Hall 1, 2 and 5. Offshore Energy is an international event and a lot of Dutch companies will be presenting themselves. The Netherlands has always played an important role in the offshore business and the Dutch seaports are important hubs for the North Sea offshore industry. You can learn more about this in our special report. The offshore wind industry is a regular topic in this magazine, reflecting the growing importance of this sector. In the US, offshore wind recently made a start on its first 30MW offshore windfarm. In contrast to this, the Dutch Gemini windfarm recently had the last of its 150 4MW turbines installed. When looking at other renewables such as solar, tidal and wave energy, there are currently a large number of projects underway, but only a few have actually been realised or are about to become operational. There are some good examples, however, showing the potential of these energy sources. Safety at sea is a topic worthy of substantial attention, with the prevention of incidents a high priority. In this issue, some examples are shown of how to reduce the risks of working offshore. arno dirkzwager | editor arno@ynfpublishers.com

New Signature Vessel Design Unveiled by Royal IHC Royal IHC has introduced a new design philosophy for offshore vessels at the ONS exhibition in Norway. The company’s new line of vessels showcases their renowned ability to transform functional requirements into optimal performance with contemporary, safe and comfortable Dutch design techniques. The new signature design is the result of close cooperation with yacht designer Mulder and interior architect HofmanDujardin. The philosophy is to create a ‘home away from home’ in an efficient and hightech environment. IHC’s goal is to construct purpose-built vessels bearing not only the intended mission in mind, but also the users, so they can carry out their duties as safely and efficiently as possible. To enhance safety on board,

ORgA

transparency and clear routing were the focus for the layout of the new offshore vessel series. Different functional areas are separated and marked by various colours and signage, while the central transparent casing connecting these areas is also clearly marked. The hull lines are the result of IHC’s successful series of offshore vessels. The hull has been optimised based on the company’s extensive experience, using CFD tools and model testing to accomplish low resistance during transit, while still retaining excellent sea- and station-keeping capabilities. With this new concept, IHC has reinforced its reputation for providing superior functionality with unparalleled and integrated design.

Orga’s Circle-H touchdown positioning and heliport identification marking (TD/PM) system has been certified by CAA International (CAAi) to all UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) CAP 437 standards. This is the first certificate of it type awarded by the CAAi and provides its customers assurance that they are buying a safe helideck lighting system that has been investigated to stringent CAP 437 safety requirements by an accredited third party. In addition to Circle-H receiving full CAP 437 approval, the CAAi has reviewed and approved the Circle-H installation methodology as well. Orga was instrumental in developing the configuration with the UK CAA following a number of helicopter accidents in the North Sea. Helidecks on UK platforms not fitted with the new Circle-H lighting system after 31 March 2018 will be considered unsuitable for night and low visibility operations.

Pioneering Spirit Completes Maiden Heavy Lift Project Allseas’ Pioneering Spirit has successfully executed her maiden heavy lift project. The removal of the 13,500t Yme North Sea mobile offshore production unit (MOPU) for Repsol Norge, 100km off the coast of Norway, took place on 22 August 2016. The Yme MOPU is a jack-up type platform standing on three steel legs, each measuring 3.5m in diameter, which are inserted approximately 10m inside the subsea storage tank columns at a water depth of 93m. With this platform removal, Allseas was able to demonstrate the single-lift capabilities of its Pioneering Spirit. After sea-fastening, the platform was transported to the newly-developed dismantling yard in Lutelandet, Norway.

NEWS IN BRIEF Three-Way Collaboration for Integrated Marine Ops Provision

Vattenfall Adopts Mermaid James Fisher Marine Services is proud to announce that Vattenfall has ordered a full Mermaid system license for the strategic planning of its offshore windfarm operations. Mermaid provides companies involved in marine operations with an increased understanding of the impact of weather and tidal forces on a project’s schedule. By accurately simulating marine operations against historical weather and tidal data, Mermaid enables enhanced decision-making in the early planning stages which in turn supports significant cost-savings through project optimisation.

Aqualis Offshore, Aptomar and Kolos Marine have entered into a cooperation enabling them to offer oil companies and rig operators integrated marine operation and field monitoring services on the Norwegian continental shelf. “Instead of hiring three companies on three separate contracts to provide three different services, we will offer a one-stop-shop solution with a single point of contact. It is about reducing interfaces, time usage, documentation, administration and – ultimately – costs,” says Thomas Skog Rodal of Aqualis Offshore, who leads the initiative and will act as point of contact towards oil companies and rig operators.

Malaysian Partnership

Sparrows Group is set to further increase its presence in the Asian Pacific market following the formation of a partnership between Sparrows Offshore Services and SapuraKencana Technology. The partnership will see both entities collaborating in the provision of offshore and onshore crane services including manufacturing, supply, operations, maintenance and overhaul of offshore and onshore cranes for the oil and gas industry in Malaysia. Sparrows Group is currently working with a number of drilling firms in Malaysia but this new alliance will herald a significant growth in the group’s activity with operators in the country.

news in brief Successful Well Abandonment

Mooring Ropes for MC Class Vessels

Claxton has completed its involvement in the abandonment of two wells on the Horne and Wren Platform in the southern North Sea. The company was responsible for the 5.1”/5.2” tubing cut verification, tubing recovery, submudline abrasive conductor severance, conductor cut verification and the subsequent multi-string recovery from both wells. The multi-string severance was performed from a jack-up lift barge (JULB) for this project, allowing significant cost savings for the client against the use of a rig.

Lankhorst Ropes has supplied BigRoll Shipping with Lanko force and Euroflex mooring ropes. The ropes will be used on BigRoll’s MC Class vessels, which are designed to deliver modules and equipment for large projects: the BigRoll Bering, BigRoll Barentsz, BigRoll Baffin and BigRoll Beaufort. The latter two will come into service in late 2016. BigRoll’s MC Class vessels are specifically designed for the marine transportation of major modules and equipment for large energy projects to some of the most remote and inaccessible areas on the planet, such as the Arctic region. Lankhorst’s Lanko force provides the qualities needed to perform with extremely heavy loads as well as challenging environmental conditions.

Plans for New Decommissioning Base DSM Demolition is going to investigate the potential of Lyness as a base for North Sea oil and gas decommissioning work. Lyness is located on the east coast of the island of Hoy, Orkney, Scotland and DSM believes that it has the capacity to provide a base for their activities in northern Scotland. The company will now carry out further exploratory work. During this period, the company will interact with local stakeholders as it develops its proposals. It will also engage with the oil and gas sector to determine potential business for a new facility and undertake the environmental assessment and feasibility testing processes.

Advanced high-strength steels for safer and stronger marine and offshore structures. No one can miss the amount of focus on reducing weight and costs, without compromising safety, in the oil and gas industry today. In many applications and structures there is great potential to save both weight and costs while using high strength steels. Strenx, the advanced highstrength steel by SSAB, allows manufacturers to develop stronger, lighter and safer structures. Depending on the starting point, designers can cut 20, 30, 40% and more weight off steel structures – and yet still achieve greater performance and a longer service life. Thanks to its unique combination of strength, toughness, consistency, and weldability, Strenx exceeds the demanding classification standards. The extreme cleanness of Strenx steel creates high toughness at low temperatures, a guarantee of the highest possible safety in critical applications. The moving and positioning of industrial objects and installations is a complex task where accuracy, stability and safety are essential. Since objects and installations differ in weight and size, every skidding project is different. To respond to this, Holmatro has developed an extremely lightweight system for loads of up to 200t in addition to their current system for loads up to 400t. Holmatro’s lightweight Skidding System is built of extremely lightweight components, so it can be easily carried, handled and positioned by one or two persons without the need of a forklift or the use of extra equipment. The total construction height is just 56mm (2.20”). Despite its low height, a relatively large unsupported span is possible when the surface is uneven. i. www.holmatro.com

TÜV Rheinland Sonovation

2.062

The offshore industry is facing continuous degradation and damages to wells. A proper corrosion evaluation is imperative to prevent well-failure, risks to well-integrity and environmental hazards. It is impossible to determine corrosion levels from the age of the well; there is also no correlation between corrosion in conductor and surface casing. With the d-PEC technology it is possible to measure the corrosion of both surface casing and conductor. Invisible from the outside, corrosion is mostly concentrated around the splash zone as well as the topside of the well. A full corrosion-monitoring program with d-PEC is highly recommended to both properly and efficiently inspect and manage your valuable assets, as well as to gain advanced knowledge of well-integrity to enable better planning of production and well-abandoning activities. i. www.tuv.com

OFFSHORE SUPPORT VESSELS

An Exciting Boys’ Book SO FAR, 2016 hAS BEEN AN ExCITING YEAR FOR OOS INTERNATIONAl. ThE DuTCh COMPANY hAS NOT ONlY SIGNED A CONTRACT FOR ThE BuIlDING OF TWO NEW SEMI-SuBMERSIBlE CRANE VESSElS (SSCVS), BuT AFTER YEARS of preparation the company has now officially moved into their new offices in the picturesque village of Serooskerke. The Grand Opening of these new offices was the latest episode in a story that reads like an exciting boys’ book. A book that is far from finished.

L

éon Overdulve, CEO of OOS International, started his company in 2009 after years of working in the offshore industry. In those early years he took a great risk and not many people in the oil business thought of him as a serious competitor. “It was a challenging time,” Mr Overdulve remembers, “I had to use my children’s savings, and not many in the industry thought I would survive.” After years of business development, however, things suddenly gained momentum when Petrobras granted the young company a four-year contract, with the possibility of an additional four years, to work offshore for them in the Campos and Santos basins. With this deal, the efforts of Mr Overdulve and his small staff finally began to pay off. Mr Overdulve: “Petrobras granted us a $970m long-term contract for the maintenance of offshore platforms. This was great news of course, but first I had to find a way of financing the two ships we had found under construction in China that would fit the job. Finally, CIMC Capital was prepared to help finance the project. CIMC, the owner of the CIMC Raffles Yard, where the SSCVs were under construction, also took a 20% share in OOS International, thus showing its trust in our concept. After this, things went

3 0 | O S I 2 0 1 6 | Volum e 9 | Issue 5

OOS.indd 30

quickly. The two vessels, named OOS Gretha, after my late younger sister, and OOS Promotheus, came into operation in 2014 and went to Brazil to work successfully for Petrobras. Meanwhile, our company grew to 200 people in 2016 of which around 50 persons work onshore.” A small and young company that succeeded in competing with the big players in the market. Not surprisingly, the deal caught a lot of attention in the market, but the critics were silenced with the first successfully executed Petrobras projects. With the Brazil business going steady, the people at the office in Serooskerke started looking further ahead for new business. Mr Overdulve continues: “It is nice to be in business in South America and by the end of 2022 we will have done around 40 platforms. But we are convinced that there is work for us in Europe as well. Market research shows a lot of potential in the decommissioning market. Of course, currently the oil and gas operators are taking their time and trying to postpone decom projects by extending the lifespan of their platforms and fields, but in the end more and more decom projects will be put on the market.”

With this conviction in mind, OOS International decided to launch two new SSCVs. Both OOS (70%) and a new partner, China Merchant Group (30%), are going to invest in the design and construction of the OOS Walcheren and the OOS Serooskerke. The ships will be built at the yard of CMG’s subsidiary China Merchants Industry holdings. With the newbuilds, the company will scale up its staff to 150 onshore and 500 offshore.

“It is true, pre-financing is a big risk for both OOS as well as for CMG, but we want to have the vessels ready when the market really gets going. In 2019, when the vessels will be operational, we hope to have concluded several contracts. The meetings we have already had with a number of operators give us enough confidence to sign the contract for the two vessels,” Mr Overdulve explains. Apart from decommissioning, the two SSCVs will also be fit to do lifting and maintenance work. They will each be equipped with two heavy lift Huisman cranes, giving the vessels a capacity of 4,400T each. Altogether, the ships will be able to compete with the big contesters like the Pioneering Spirit. “Sure the Pioneering Spirit is capable of lifting heavier loads – up to 40,000T. But most big platforms are of a modular kind and it will be very difficult to lift these platforms in one piece within expensive reinforcements. So, in our opinion, it will be cheaper and not slower, to do most of the decom jobs at sea, making use of our vessels,” Mr Overdulve explains. Another 2016 milestone was the Grand Opening of the new offices in Serooskerke in early September. They are housed in a 19th century villa named Welgelegen. With the complete renovation and allied preservation of the villa, Mr Overdulve is showing his passion for his Zeeland roots. “When I was a kid growing up in foster homes, I very often spent my holidays at this foster home, Villa Welgelegen. Since then, the building has played various roles. A few years ago, we had the chance to prevent the villa from being demolished and we decided to completely renovate it in order to bring it back to its former glory,” Mr Overdulve continues. “It took us some time, but now we are very proud of the result; reason for us to organise a big party. We never had the time to invite our friends and partners to celebrate, we also don’t like to show off, but this was a special occasion.” For the opening, not only were OOS staff and business relations invited, but also inhabitants of Serooskerke, especially the children and other people interested in the villa were also welcome to visit the new office.

I am convinced that this loyalty, not only to our region, but also to our suppliers, subcontractors and customers, will pay off for everyone.

“Of course, OOS has grown into an international firm with offices in Brazil, Mexico, Singapore and Africa and people working everywhere around the globe. That doesn’t mean that we should forget our origins. I will always be the down to earth offshore sailor. Wherever possible, we help our region, for instance by sponsoring local initiatives. But also for every new project we try to have Zeeland subcontractors involved, thus giving an extra impulse to the Zeeland economy. I am convinced that this loyalty, not only to our region, but also to our suppliers, subcontractors and customers, will pay off for everyone,” Mr Overdulve concludes. i. www.oosinternational.com

fields have many similarities, for instance, cables used in the marine sector are also found on drilling rigs”, says Mr Gadella.

Extra Service

“We consider the offshore and marine sector to be markets that present tremendous challenges. We are always looking for appropriate and efficient solutions for our customers and of course this is also important for offshore. Supplying everything to size is an important feature. Companies can also contact us when they need something really quickly; we even have a 24/7 emergency service. This gives us our market advantage.” Mr Gadella says it calmly, but Cable Partners can meet the promise, because it holds in stock a very wide and extensive product range. The warehouse contains numerous reels and many metres of cable. Ready to measure, cut, pack and supply just in time, at home and abroad. Mr Gadella gives an example: “We were asked by a subcontractor to supply cable for

the Veja Mate substation. The cable had to be at the yard in Hoboken, Belgium, within 24 hours. The cable needed to be fire-resistant, have an SHF black outer sheath, a Y/G conductor and be screened. We delivered the required 6,000m of cable to the yard, meeting the deadline.“

Realistic Ambitions

“Our customers usually know what they need, however, we always take a critical look, because we want them to buy the right products, to get it right the first time. Therefore, providing advice is also part of supplying customised services. We assist our customers, thinking from their perspective. If necessary, we supply cable that is developed and manufactured to

specification.” Mr Gadella continues. “Of course, safety is tremendously important in the offshore and marine sectors. Cables must always be fire and mud resistant. The conditions are highly demanding and in practice require accurate and detailed specifications. Through our supplier Top Cable and Unika,” Mr Gadella clarifies, “we can offer these explicit specifications. They are generally considered to be excellent suppliers.” Mr Gadella is also clear about the company’s ambitions: “We do not necessarily want enormous growth figures. However, we aim to achieve annual growth. And we are realistic; in any case it is important that people think of us when they require cables for offshore and ships.” i. www.cablepartners.nl

Renewable eneRgy is a hot issue today in the offshoRe industRy. offshoRe wind is gaining maRket shaRe all oveR the world. while many countries choose to develop largescale offshore windfarms, other types of renewable energy, such as energy from the tides, waves and sun are still trying to overcome their initial teething problems.

Increased Electricity Yield

Floating solar farms have a number of advantages over onshore solar farms. apart from the fact that on water, either at sea or inland, floating solar systems benefit from the abundance of space available, both the reflection from the water surface and the direct cooling effect of the water can increase the electricity yield from solar panels. in asia, offshore solar farms are becoming increasingly popular, mainly because scarcity of land prohibits the construction of solar farms onshore. so far, these solar farms have not been built at sea

but on inland waters such as reservoirs or near the shore on reclaimed land. in Japan, Kyocera has built its first offshore solar farm on reclaimed land in the Kagoshima Bay. its next project, located in the yakamura dam reservoir, is expected to supply around 13.7mw from 50,904 solar panels. once operational in 2018, it will be the largest floating solar farm in the world. in australia, Brasil and the us, similar projects have been realised but, as yet, only on a small scale. in 2014 malta instigated a three-year project to take solar farms to the sea. this solaqua project is investigating such challenges as sea-worthiness, corrosion, the effect of salt-encrusted panels on output and the effects of cooling and reflection and makes malta one of the frontrunners in solar farms at sea.

Challenging Harsh Circumstances

while solar energy at sea is still in its infancy, tidal and wave energy are closer to commercial exploitation. ocean waves and tidal movements hold vast amounts of energy. the us national renewable energy laboratory estimates that more than onethird of all electricity used in the us could be drawn from the seas. however, ocean power is forecast to produce only 1gw of

www.o f f s h o r e - i n d u str y.eu

Renewables.indd 39

electricity worldwide by 2020, despite a number of interesting advantages. tidal and wave energy can provide power 24/7 and the supply of energy is predictable and stable. on the other hand, both tidal and wave energy have to deal with a number of technical challenges because of the harsh circumstances that confront the installations at sea. environmental questions, such as the effect of the installations on sea life, for example, also need to be answered. so far, tidal energy shows highly promising results. experts say the future of tidal energy lies with arrays of floating or sea-bed-mounted turbines that capture the energy of tidal currents in unobstructed waters — so-called in-stream technology. nova scotia’s Bay of Fundy, home to the world’s most extreme tides, contains more than 50,000 megawatts of theoretical power.

Blend of Sustainable Sources

combining the various sources of sustainable energy and making use of each other’s power grids can help to reduce costs and improve the adjustment of supply to demand. recently, atlantis announced an agreement between the company’s majority-owned meygen project and lochend wind energy allowing their new onshore windfarm to deliver electricity to

Corrosion of well casings on offshore production platforms can have disastrous effects: not only on production but also for the environment. Early detection can prevent leakages, outage and dangerous situations. Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC), as applied by TÜV Rheinland Sonovation is a well proven and validated, nonintrusive and established method to trace and measure corrosion and is developed by Shell Global Solutions. We are happy to put it into practice for you.

the grid whenever the MeyGen tidal project is not making full use of the available export capacity. This will result in improved utilisation of the existing grid network without affecting MeyGen’s power generation, and is believed to be the first such project of its kind in the UK to combine wind and tidal power. The initial phase of the MeyGen project is on track to deliver first power in the second half of 2016. As a result of the predictable and cyclical nature of tidal generation, there is a unique opportunity for other energy projects to gain access to the grid at those times when the MeyGen project is not generating at maximum output, thus facilitating increased generation in the near term from the area’s rich renewable resources. This arrangement is an important step towards demonstrating the feasibility of a diverse blend of sustainable sources of generation as a long-term solution to the need for predictable and secure electricity. It shows the potential for optimising the use of existing grid infrastructure assets through intelligent matching of different generation profiles. Other examples of power supply combinations are still in their test phase, as is the case with the Nemos project. Nemos is a system for the generation of electricity from ocean waves and is particularly suitable for use in combination with offshore wind turbines. This German system is now being tested at full scale and is planned to be ready for electricity production in 2017. i. www.meygen.com i. www.nemos.org i. www.kyocerasolar.eu

Companies such as hsm, huisman, Keppel verolme, and mammoet have been the backbone of this for years, with a strong focus on (de) mobilisation, construction, conversion and repair of large-scale vessels and offshore units. A strong and complete service cluster has always been the attraction that makes the market choose Rotterdam. These existing activities will remain of importance for the port area, but there is no doubt that the offshore market is undergoing certain

transformations in the light of the worldwide shift in perspective towards the use of oil and gas as energy suppliers. Offshore wind seems to be the key solution for most North Sea countries.

Room for a Promising Market

In recent years, customers who made inquiries for plots to be used by the offshore wind industry received little or no assistance from the Port Authority. Joost Eenhuizen, Business Manager Maritime and Offshore Industry of the Rotterdam Port Authority explains why. “Like any other port, we too

met with a lot of requests from the offshore wind industry for big plots with sizes of up to 30ha but to be honest, we couldn’t handle these requests simply because we didn’t have this amount of space available. For us it was disappointing to see the offshore wind activities in other ports growing, while over here we were missing the boat.” Mr Eenhuizen continues. “As the market for offshore wind will be a very promising market in the upcoming 10 to 15 years, we have recently made room available on Maasvlakte 2 for offshore wind, decommissioning, oil and gas.”

“Maasvlakte 2 is a perfect location for offshore activities, with plenty of space available, an open connection to and from the North Sea and sufficient draught and quay length to receive even the biggest type of offshore units and vessels”, Mr Eenhuizen points out. “It is not without reason that Sif Group decided to choose Maasvlakte 2 to expand it’s activities, and looking at the number of requests we are now receiving from the market, this is just the beginning.” Now that Sif has almost completed its new terminal for production, handling and

FOCUS ON THE NETHERLANDS transportation of mega size monopiles, the Port of Rotterdam is trying to fill in the complete supply chain with companies active in the engineering, assembly, handling and installation of offshore wind constructions. Mr Eenhuizen states, “With Sif as one of the market leaders located in our port, we have secured a good starting position in the offshore wind sector. To make the picture complete, we would welcome producers of other windmill components and logistics companies to take care of shipping.”

Manifesto to Play a Leading Role Once the windmills are operational, there will be a need for a home base for operations and maintenance and for this Maasvlakte 2 is a perfect location. It is close to most existing and planned North Sea offshore windfarms and also to the Rotterdam-based companies which are able to provide these services. Mr Eeenhuizen admits: “Apart from Maasvlakte 2, the Rotterdam port area is already home to a lot of companies that can take care of all necessary maritime services to the offshore wind industry. “

“In fact we are already working closely together with companies in Rotterdam to expand our business in offshore wind. In this regard, a Rotterdam coalition was recently established called Rotterdam Offshore Wind Delta. Together with the Rotterdam Port Authority, the Municipality of Rotterdam and Rotterdam Partners, a number of Rotterdam-based companies signed a manifesto setting out their ambition to play a leading role,” Mr Eenhuizen notes.

Everyone in the sector is talking about the opportunities and threads in the decommission market and the Port of Rotterdam is no exception. It is keeping a keen eye on that market, although it is not the Holy Grail for the Port Authority. Mr Eenhuizen: “For a Port Authority, decommissioning is not really a profitable market. Only a few vessels per year will enter our port and only for a short stay, so the port wages earned will be relatively modest. On the other hand, when we look at employment and the added value for the community, decommissioning can be very valuable. So we will see how the situation develops and we will stay in touch with the companies involved in this business, and, of course, we will keep our eyes open for any opportunity to support

The port of Rotterdam, active worldwide in the offshore sector, is home to a large variety of companies. Some of these companies are:

For now, offshore wind will be the main target for the Port Authority, as is stated in the Port Authority’s business plan. “Offshore wind projects take about three to five years to develop and it is therefore necessary for us to make hay while the sun shines,” Mr Eenhuizen explains. “For this we are looking for various options to help new and existing customers. One of the ideas we have for Maasvlakte 2 is a multi-user terminal for offshore purposes, but of course investing in such a project before we have any commitment from the market is a risk. Multi-user terminal or not,” Mr Eenhuizen concludes, “as the Port Authority we see a bright future in offshore wind and therefore we will go full speed ahead to give our port a leading role is this market too!

orth of the port of Rotterdam, the Amsterdam port area stretches out from IJmuiden to Amsterdam, bordering the North Sea Canal. The Amsterdam port area combines access to the (southern) North Sea with excellent connectivity from the main land. This will further increase with the opening of the new largest sea lock of the world in 2019. Amsterdam IJmuiden Offshore Port (AYOP) is a collaboration of some 75 businesses and organisations dedicated to profiling the North Sea Canal and offering space and relevant tailor-made solutions. The port area offers locations for installation, cable hubs and operation & maintenance for offshore wind farms. It is also highly suitable for drilling and project support for the oil and gas

industry and late-life and decommissioning services; conversion, repair, maintenance and mobilisation services for work and installation vessels are other areas for which AYOP is highly qualified. Several wind farms have been built in the Amsterdam area and are maintained from here. Roll-on roll-off services were used for importing turbines, which after preassembly were installed at sea. Breman Offshore, a member of AYOP, produced a gripper for the Van Oord Aeolus. Wind b.v, a company for cable handling, regularly receives vessels from VBMS, Boskalis and Van Oord. Heavy lift projects have also been executed in the port, such as the transhipment of a high-voltage offshore station for the Luchterduinen offshore wind farm. In the Amsterdam yards, conversion is carried out for production platforms and offshore vessels such as the Allseas Solitaire, Seajack Scylla, Swift 10, Seafox 1, and the A2Sea Installer.

Hub for German Wind Farms

Groningen Seaports manages two seaports in the northern Netherlands, Delfzijl and Eemshaven. Eemshaven is geographically well-located for the offshore wind activities in the North Sea. Moreover, Eemshaven meets all maritime requirements. To serve the fast moving sector of offshore wind, the port has become a hub for offshore wind farms, especially in the neighbouring German part of the North Sea. In recent years, Eemshaven has become the backdrop to large-scale activities concerning the assembly and shipping of wind turbines. Tripods, monopiles, converter stations, transition pieces, blades, etc. have been transported from Eemshaven to, for instance, the Alpha Ventus, Bard Offshore I and Global Tech I wind farms. Van Oord used Eemshaven for the Dutch Gemini wind farm, while OWF (Boskalis/Volker Wessels) is currently using Eemshaven for the Veja Mate wind farm. With the completion of the Beatrixhaven, Eemshaven has strengthened its position as an offshore wind hub. It has a 220m-long heavy load quay (30t per m2); jack-up vessels can be positioned directly in front of the quay and over 100ha is available for companies to establish their businesses. A heliport is scheduled to be in use in 2017.

and efficient turnarounds. Den Helder’s geographical location allows it to provide transport links and logistical support to around 90% of the oil and gas installations in the southern North Sea. A wellestablished supply chain, consisting of numerous companies with a broad knowledge-base, offers operators whatever they need, whether it is fuel, cargo, equipment or people. Den Helder Airport is home to the largest heliport in western Europe. Furthermore, training centres and educational institutions are located in the surrounding area. Adding further strength to the Port of Den Helder’s logistical facilities is the new Kooyhaven development. With open sea access as well as hinterland connections via the North Sea Canal, Kooyhaven will provide companies active in the offshore supply chain the opportunity to expand and increase their activities. While the Port of Den Helder has its roots in the offshore oil and gas industries, the skills that have been required to build its current location are also transferable to other offshore sectors like the offshore wind and decommissioning market.

Leading Position

Southwest of the port of Rotterdam lie the ports of Vlissingen and Terneuzen. Managed by Zeeland Seaports, Vlissingen has grown into a full service port for the offshore industry. Like most other Dutch ports, its

offshore activities were originally aimed at the oil and gas sector, but since the beginning of the 21th century, the port of Vlissingen has attained a leading position in the offshore wind sector, with more than 30 projects successfully executed. The port is located in the vicinity of most of the existing and planned North Sea wind farms. The combined Borsele I and II offshore wind farms, at a stone’s throw from Vlissingen, will form the largest offshore wind farm of the Netherlands when operational. Vlissingen has an excellent lock-free entrance for vessels up to 16m draught, and is located at only one hour’s sailing time from the North Sea. offshore industry: construction, maintenance, repair, conversion, (de) mobilisation, decommissioning, storage and handling, heavy lift services and maritime services. A heliport at fifteen minutes’ drive from the port can be used for the swift transport of crew and equipment.

Years of Experience

No doubt the Dutch ports are in many ways comparable when it comes to the services they can offer and they compete with each other for pieces of the offshore market. However, in other ways they are complimentary to each other. Teaming up with ports in other countries is also an idea worth considering. Together, the Dutch ports offer years of experience and have knowledge of a broad range of companies and organisations, resulting in their strong position in the traditional oil and gas market, as well as in the relatively new offshore wind and decommissioning industry.

DECOMMISSIONING

Planning Portal for Decommissioning DECOM NORTH SEA, THE REPRESENTATIVE BODY FOR THE OFFSHORE DECOMMISSIONING INDUSTRY, HAVE LAUNCHED THE LATE LIFE PLANNING Portal. This operational website – also known as L2P2 – has been designed to support the North Sea oil and gas industry in the planning and execution of late life and decommissioning projects.

A repository for lessons learned, a forum for discussion and a gateway to contacts, analytics and market intelligence.

roviding a single access point for knowledge sharing and cross-sector learning, L2P2 reflects Decom North Sea’s all-encompassing objective to bring the regulators, operators and supply chain together to create the co-operative environment required by the decommissioning industry. Roger Esson, Chief Executive of Decom North Sea explains the drive behind the portal: “Decommissioning is a long game, with over 40 years of decommissioning activity yet to take place and around 90% of North Sea assets yet to be decommissioned. “ For that to happen as efficiently and as costeffectively as possible in the long term, we need to make good decisions in the late life phase.” “Taking that into account,” Mr Esson continues, “it is easy to understand why Decom North Sea has developed a portal which provides the ultimate decommissioning toolkit: a repository for lessons learned, a forum for discussion and

a gateway to contacts, analytics and market intelligence. At this stage in any industry, a toolkit such as this provides fundamental support in achieving the overarching objectives of efficiency, simplification, standardisation and cooperation.” Project work-stream champions have populated the portal with what have been characterised as foundation tools and lessons learned. Decom North Sea Business Manager – and L2P2 Project Manager – Pamela Ogilvie explains why industry engagement is a fundamental to the portal: “It is now up to industry to share the tools and processes that have materially added value to their decommissioning projects, so that others can share the benefits. Given the incredible level of genuine collaboration on this project to date, I am confident that L2P2 will be adopted as an industry standard information portal – we believe the potential is limitless.” i. www.decomnorthsea.com i. www.l2p2.net

N

ot long ago, visual inspection was the only way to check the health of a platform or vessel and when cracks started to appear, it was time for action. This meant waiting for the actual crack to get big enough to be seen by the naked eye; not an ideal situation. Improved satellite connections make it possible to keep track of all vessels and other floating assets around the world. Not only are their GPS positions visible this way, but also real-time access to the motion and conditionmonitoring system can be attained via satellite Today, this remote monitoring is a hot subject within the entire maritime industry, from tow transports to integrity monitoring of platforms. Experience shows that the natural frequency of oil and gas structures tends to change during their lifetime. In order to assess whether this will lead to problems or a shortened operating life, it is important to start structural monitoring as early as possible. Remote monitoring can also prevent damage during rig moves and

jacking operations. The use of ultra-sensitive motion sensors allows early detection of changes in frequency and thus triggers inspection. Collected data can be transferred to shore for post-processing and analysis. Comparing the collected data with environmental conditions can give insights into (seasonal) changes in frequency and assist in determining a long-term structural integrity management plan. One of the companies providing such systems is the Netherlands-based Siri Marine. Siri Marine offers expertise in motion sensors developed under their own management, using sensors and equipment developed by third parties. This special technology makes movements measurable and visible in real time, helping to improve safety, minimise risks, prevent structural and environmental damage and reduce costs. i. www.sirimarine.com

HEAVY LIFT & TRANSPORT

The world’s longesT wind Turbine blade, aT 88.4m, has successfully compleTed its first journey – perhaps as the largest cargo ever transported on Danish roads.

T

ravellers on Denmark’s highway E45 witnessed an impressive sight on the night of 30 June, as the world’s longest blade, LM 88.4 P, hit the road for the first time. The blade left LM Wind Power’s factory in Lunderskov at 9:45 p.m. and ended its 218-kilometre trip at 3:30 a.m. in Aalborg, to undergo further testing at Blaest Blade Test Centre. Though LM Wind Power has decades of experience in preparing big blades for transport, this blade presented unique challenges due to its unprecedented scale, so the firm contracted special transport company Mammoet to carry out the operation. The entire route was carefully mapped out in advance and specialists were ready to temporarily dismantle guardrails and signposts where necessary. The full cargo measured just under 100m in length, with a loaded height of 4.47m at its highest point, allowing for only 3cm of extra space when passing under bridges!

The huge blade has been specifically designed for offshore wind company Adwen for its AD 8-180 wind turbine model. This turbine will have an 8MW nominal capacity and 180m rotor diameter. The 88.4m length of the blade allows for the best compromise between swept area, energy production and the weight and loads transferred to the wind turbine. This combination provides the optimum balance in plant costs and contributes to one of the most competitive LCoE in the industry. In addition, the blade design has been conceived with scalability in mind to enable the further development of Adwen’s 8MW platform. i. www.adwenoffshore.com i. www.lmwindpower.com i. www.mammoet.com MAMMOET BOOTh nO.

he rapid growth and technical progress of the offshore wind energy sector is also reflected in the capacity and size of the substations. For the next two phases of the Horns Rev Offshore Wind Farm, the company was again selected to provide the OHVS. Whereas Horns Rev A featured a 160MW transformer capacity and 1,000MT deck weight, this increased to 250MW / 1,300MT for Horns Rev B and to 400MW / 1,800MT for the recently delivered Horns Rev C OHVS. A 325MW / 2,200MT OHVS was delivered for the Belgian Thornton Bank phase 3 project in 2012.

Significant Workload

Recently, the fabrication of an even larger OHVS was granted for the DONG Energy Borkum Riffgrund 2 project, featuring a transformer capacity of 450MW, a deck weight of 2,500MT and a 1,800MT jacket (support structure). This is strategically a very important award. It is the first project for DONG Energy (the largest developer of offshore wind projects), as well as being the first OHVS for the German sector, one of the areas with the highest growth in offshore wind capacity. Delivery of this project is

scheduled for early 2018 and provides a significant workload. Another project for the offshore wind sector carried out in the Schiedam premises was a 1,050MT jacket for the E.On Rampion offshore wind project, situated off the Sussex coast in UK waters. Sailaway took place in September of this year.

Key Strength

Throughout the years, the execution of projects on a turnkey EPCI contract basis has become a key strength of HSM Offshore, both in the upstream offshore oil and gas market and in the offshore renewables market. An excellent example is the Petrogas E&P Netherlands A 18 project, situated in the most northern section of the Dutch North Sea at a water depth of 44m, for which the company provided a gas production platform consisting of a 950MT deck and a 1250MT jacket. They subcontracted the Seaway heavy lift crane vessel Oleg Strashnov to install both the deck and jacket. Immediately after the granting of the contract in May 2014, Iv Oil & Gas was contracted for detailed engineering and procurement support.

OFFSHORE WIND

GEMINI OFFSHORE WINDPARK

Turbine Installation Completed Gemini Offshore Windpark will be fully operational mid-2017.

ON TUESDAY, 23 AUGUST, THE LAST OF GEMINI’S 150 TURBINES WAS INSTALLED. WITH THIS MILESTONE, THE OFFSHORE WIND PARK IS ONE step closer to delivering sustainable energy to 1.5 million people in the Netherlands. Starting in February, installation ships Aeolus (owned by Van Oord) and Pacific Osprey (owned by Swire Blue Ocean) installed all 150 4.0 MW Siemens-built wind turbines in the North Sea. Over the next several months, all turbines will be connected and thoroughly tested. The offshore wind park will be fully operational mid-2017.

T

he installation of the 150th and final turbine in the wind park is a magnificent achievement,” Matthias Haag CEO of Gemini says. “After the successful installation of the foundations, the offshore high-voltage stations and 210km of export cables by Van Oord went according to plan, as did the turbine installation. We are proud of everyone who contributed to the safe construction of Gemini.” Once operational, Gemini will generate 600 MW, meeting the annual energy needs of 1.5 people and reducing the annual CO₂ emissions of the Netherlands by 1.25 million tons. Gemini will therefore play an important role in achieving the sustainable energy goals of not only the Netherlands, but also the whole European Union. Majority shareholder and project partner Northland Power: “Today’s announcement represents another momentous achievement in this project.” John Brace, CEO of Northland Power, notes, “We are very proud of the project team for their

great work. It is meaningful to all of us to see all 150 wind turbines standing, and to know that Gemini is one step closer to helping the Netherlands in its transition to a more sustainable future.” Gemini is one of the largest wind parks in the world, in size as well as production. It will produce enough sustainable power to meet the energy needs of Amsterdam and Rotterdam combined. The wind park is located in the North Sea, 85km off the coast of Groningen, in an area where wind speeds are among the highest and most constant in the world. Four project partners have joined forces to make Gemini a reality: Canadian independent sustainable energy company Northland Power (60% project interest), wind turbine manufacturer Siemens Wind Power (20%), Dutch marine contractor Van Oord (10%) and renewable energy, waste and raw materials company HVC (10%). i. www.geminiwindpark.nl

THE BEAUTY OF STRENX:

REDUCE WEIGHT AND COST WITHOUT COMPROMISING SAFETY SSAB has a long history in the field of ship building and marine applications. When the first floating oil platforms were built, SSAB was one of the main steel suppliers to this segment. Then when the shipbuilding business moved away from Europe, SSAB transformed the company to be a leader in high strength steel, a strategy that proved to be very successful. Now SSAB is the world leader in super advanced steels with strength of 960, 1100, 1300 Mpa for welded structural applications. The Offshore and Marine “OM” versions of our Strenx steel deliver the consistency, tolerances and properties of our best structural steels in combination with the classification and branch standards of the Offshore and Marine segment. Going from a standard 355 Mpa grade to a Strenx 700 OME might allow a 30 % weight reduction and 50 % weld reduction. Can it work for you? Let’s find out, together. SAFETY AT SEA

A Company Crisis, That Doesn’t Happen To Us! DEEP INSIDE, EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT THIS IS UNFORTUNATELY NOT ALWAYS TRUE. THERE ARE COMPANIES THAT GET HIT. EVERY YEAR, TIME and again. Company premises do go up in flames, accidents with company vehicles do happen, and there are former employees who left the company involuntarily, leaving access codes unblocked.

C

an this happen in the offshore industry too? What would happen to the company imago if a worker falls overboard during a crew transfer executed in marginal weather conditions, and in the aftermath it transpires that the captain did not have the right certificates? Although years of successful business can leave a company with the illusion of invincibility, it is clear that no company can be complacent. The problem with crises is that they occur so unexpectedly. Is it possible to be prepared? A company knows: • where its assets are, and in which environment they operate • who its suppliers and customers are • what its corporate risks are; companies have their respective risk assessments in our files • what its strong aspects are but also where it is vulnerable • that many of its co-workers and competitors are active on social media • which players in the supply chain it depends on and who depends on the company itself. In reality, every company knows exactly what can go wrong. Building an offshore windpark, a company knows the location, who the contractors are and what the major risks of installing monopiles are. Also known is who may suffer from an incident, where it could take place and who is likely to find out. The only thing unknown is when it is going to happen. If a major heavy lift incident with

multiple casualties and damage to vital assets happens during the installation of a monopile, a company can hardly say it was not prepared for that to happen. That’s where the problem lies: as soon as a crisis becomes manifest, a company needs to act immediately, going into mitigation mode right away. Everyone starts to act instantaneously. Within hours, the entire company is involved in managing the crisis and everyone is working with their respective departments to secure the future of the company. Within those same hours, the company has changed from a winning team to a loose collection of individuals who are all pulling together with the highest priority being getting the stranded vehicle moving again. Everybody pulls as hard as they can, but the vehicle remains where it is: stranded. Slowly but surely, the vehicle sinks further into the quicksand called crisis. On top of it all, stakeholders have found out about the situation while the company is still working on its first press release. Despite all the knowledge and experience it has available, a company often appears not to be able to go through a crisis. Why? Managing a crisis is by definition multi-

www.o f f s h o r e - i n d u str y.eu

Falck.indd 73

In general, in every crisis the same things happen, and every crisis follows the same phases. disciplinary and line management is no longer suitable to solve the problems. A crisis does not stick to carefully-described company procedures. Managing a company no longer works as it did yesterday.

helps companies to prepare for crises. With interactive management games, different roles and responsibilities during a crisis are practiced. Leading a crisis meeting and conducting briefings with key players are part of interactive cases. Participants learn how to make stakeholder and threat analyses and create a crisis communication plan. The achieved learning objectives can be put to practice in realistic scenarios. After a crisis management training, participants know what to expect during a crisis and what is expected of them when the unthinkable happens. i. www.falck.nl

Crises are by far not as specific as often thought. In general, the same things happen in every crisis, and every crisis follows the same phases. If they realise this and know what kind of crisis is going to hit at some point in the future, a company can prepare for it. A crisis team can be prepared in terms of organisation, logistics, responsibilities and routine. Preparing for a crisis is neither difficult nor expensive. Not being prepared, is ultimately both. on-schedule The final sTage of consTrucTion of DeepwaTer winD’s Block islanD winD farm, The firsT offshore wind farm in the US, has been reached. According to Deepwater Wind’s CEO Jeffrey Grybowski, the farm will start producing energy in November.

he farm will have five wind turbines, each rising to twice the height of the Statue of Liberty. When completed in late 2016, they will generate a combined 30MW of electricity, enough to supply 17,000 homes. Installation of the Block Island Wind Farm’s turbine towers, blades and nacelles began in early August at the project site, roughly three miles off the coast of Block Island, Rhode Island.

In July, the Big Max cable lay vessel (under a contract with LS Cable and its subcontractor Durocher Marine) completed installation of all cables for the project, including the four inter-array cables connecting the five

wind turbine foundations and the export cable connecting the wind farm to a new substation on Block Island. In addition, National Grid completed the installation of the sea2shore submarine cable connection between Block Island and mainland Rhode Island in June.

First Steel in the Water

All fifteen turbine tower sections and the 73.5m long blades, supplied by GE Renewable Energy and blade manufacturer LM Wind Power, have been shuttled from Providence Port to the project site by two Montco Offshore liftboats, the Paul and the Caitlin. The last major components to be completed, the five Haliade nacelles, began their journey on 15 July on board the Fred. Olsen Windcarrier’s OSV Brave Tern across the Atlantic from GE’s manufacturing facility in St. Nazaire, France, to the project site, where it arrived on 1 August. The final construction phase by the Brave Tern and the two Montco liftboats finished mid August. Commissioning by GE technicians will take several months and started during the offshore installation of the turbines. The wind farm will be in commercial operation end of 2016 once commissioning is complete.

Deepwater Wind CEO Jeffery Grybowski at the Block Island Offshore Wind farm.

A year ago, Deepwater Wind made history with the first steel in the water for offshore wind in America. All five steel jacket foundations were successfully installed during a busy eighteen-week construction period last year, with approximately 200 workers and a dozen construction and transport barges, tugboats, crew ships and monitoring vessels active at the project’s port facilities and the wind farm site.

21 Projects in the Pipeline

With 30MW, the Block Island offshore wind farm is relatively small compared to the average European wind farms. But the potential resource is enormous, estimated by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to be 4,223GW, which amounts to more than four times the nation’s annual electricity production. Of course this estimation is not realistic considering financial, environmental and technical restrictions, but in the near term, 3.6GW of offshore wind energy capacity is expected to be added to the grid by 2020, through projects which have been issued leases by the Bureau of Energy Ocean Management (BOEM). As of 2015, there have been 21 US offshore wind projects in

the development pipeline, representing 15,650MW of offshore wind.

Offshore Wind Makes Sense

More than 60% of the US offshore wind resource is located in areas with deep water, where the water is so deep that conventional foundations are not practical. Therefore, several US companies are developing innovative floating offshore wind platforms for use in deep waters. Wind speeds off the Atlantic Coast and in the Gulf of Mexico are lower than wind speeds off the Pacific Coast. However the presence of shallower waters in the Atlantic makes

development more attractive and economical for now. Hawaii has the highest estimated potential, accounting for roughly 17% of the entire estimated U.S. offshore wind resource. Onshore wind energy is already of growing importance as a provider of energy in the US. Today, onshore wind accounts for 4.4% of total US electric power generation. Growing the United States’ offshore wind portfolio makes geographical sense as 80% of the country’s electricity demand is from coastal states. i. www.dwwind.com

The duTch-based group marinoffs encompasses a selecT seT of companies, each wiTh Their own specialism, serving cusTomers in the worldwide maritime, offshore and energy market. in combining those special skills, a one-stop-shop business model is provided, which is equivalent to the engineering-production-commissioning (epc) workflow.

riven by, and compliant with, the market demands, this new approach is an advantageous development, considering all the recent economic changes in the maritime, offshore and energy market. marinoffs believes that the way of working had to change and to provide a total concept or solution in order to better comply with the current market demands. with maritime, offshore and energy projects becoming larger and more complex and with margins getting steadily smaller, the need for a ‘one-stop-shop’ solution to reach the ultimate goal of execution and completion had become essential. a single point of contact for all activities during a project makes for better control over the process and creates a more transparent report for the customer. This business model enables the customer to deal with just one contractor, remedying the problem of having to manage all the various difficult interfaces. potentially, this safeguards more efficient progress, eliminates the risk of deficiencies caused by all kinds of interface issues and fits better to one product. in the event of an approaching vessel in need of repair, for example, whether planned or not, marinoffs is the most

reliable partner to deal with it, in any harbour in europe. The right experts from various disciplines are mobilised to execute the envisaged work. appointments are made and coordinated without needlessly bothering the client or requiring his intervention. The new group of companies means it is possible to answer any questions a client has, as well as discussing the best ways in which to get the job done in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.

characteristic of the market-driven approach is the on-site service. If the object cannot be taken to the machine, the machine will be taken to the object! Marinoffs is very well equipped to conduct servicing at the customers’ locations, onshore and offshore. In the case of machine servicing, this can be carried out either in the well-equipped tool shops or at the customer’s site, wherever this may be. It is possible to take care of both multiple repairs and servicing . The entire scope of what needs to be done can be identified and a plan for dismantling, repair and reinstatement drawn up. This proposal will then be discussed with the customer and, when agreed, the work will be executed. In the event that the project includes an area of specialist work not covered by the group itself, Marinoffs solves the issue by sub-contracting that work, but still managing it as a part of the whole.

Innovations and Customised Solutions

Complementary to the business model for the Maritime, Offshore and Energy markets, innovation in general is a major goal of the Marinoffs group of companies. Due to the variety of specialists within the group, forces can be joined to realise additional value. Focusing on customised projects, the group is capable of, and prepared for, the provision of a customised solution for any enquiry not only relating to the three major disciplines, but also outside those disciplines. Marinoffs enjoys the challenge. Combining its knowledge provides the group the opportunity to even further achieve its “one-stop-shop” mission and vision. The new fervour and the existence of all this combined expertise and cross-fertilisation between the companies within the group results in new ideas and insights, initiating innovative solutions for any enquiry. Marinoffs group is already involved in some innovative challenges in the market and is happy to serve anyone with further enquiries of any kind.

DIPEC is held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, and has become the world’s new meeting point for the global energy industry. ADIPEC draws ever-increasing numbers of exhibiting companies, international country pavilions, visitors and conference speakers from around the world. With the 2016 event receiving record submissions and covering an area of some 130,000m2, ADIPEC 2016 (7 - 10 November) now hosts one of the world’s largest oil and gas technical conferences. Organised by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), this year’s programme has attracted a remarkable 2,700 abstract submissions. After a selection by the technical committee, more than 700 speakers have been invited to take part, making this the must-attend conference for the Middle East region. The overall theme for this year’s conference is Strategies for the New Energy Landscape. The event will explore regional and global views, with more than 100 sessions to be attended by 8,500 delegates from both technical and non-technical functions within the oil and gas industry. The 2016 edition of the ADIPEC Conference Programme will cover a broad range of technical categories, E&P geoscience,

unconventional resources, field development, drilling and completion technology, project engineering and management, operational excellence and HSE, gas technology, offshore and marine, and people and talent.

Offshore & Marine Exhibition and Conference

Building on the success in 2015, ADIPEC is once again bringing together the Offshore & Marine exhibition and conference. This will provide vital updates relating to shipping, maritime security and safety, economic analysis of the offshore sector, pipeline infrastructure and transportation, shallow and deep-water exploration and production, oil field developments and technological advances. Offshore projects in the region are still on track as countries work towards meeting capacity targets. This includes a EUR 22 billion investment in offshore oil projects up to 2020, planned by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and the UAE’s strategy to boost its total oil output capacity to 3.5 million barrels per day (bpd) by 2017-18. It is estimated that offshore reserves will account for approximately 50% of total oil production in Abu Dhabi by 2018 as a result of this continued investment.

World’s Largest Passive Heave Compensator Cranemaster has extended their fleet of units with the world’s largest passive heave compensator (PHC). Safe working load (SWL) for the new unit is 1,000t and maximum stroke length is 4,000mm. The unit itself weighs more than 60t. Being out on its first mission, the large unit has already proved its capabilities during the installation of monopiles at the Rampion Offshore Wind Project off the south coast of England. The new unit comes with an advanced control system that adapts to the various lifting phases during operations. As a result, optimised performance can be achieved for each stage of the lift. i. www.cranemaster.no

Aqwary is the first company in the world to supply a device for wireless underwater communication through the Internet. More than a metre below the surface of a body of water, most radio communication fails. The water absorbs the signals of all but the lowest-frequency electromagnetic waves, meaning that a normal mobile phone, or even a walkie-talkie, simply wouldn’t get any signal. The new device, called the Smart Console, uses four hydrophones (underwater microphones) to communicate with any other unit within 100m. Data is sent over ultrasound, the same method that most marine life uses to communicate. i. www.aqwary.com

Innovation in a Renewable Market. Auxilium Offshore is an independent company offering solutions for subsea operations in the offshore industry. The company not only consults clients and helps them with project management, but it also develops and delivers subsea tools, tailor-made for every problem encounterable. This method has led to a broad portfolio of marine assets and mission equipment. With every job done, more and more is learned about how to conduct difficult subsea operations cost effectively. As Managing Director Fleur Loef states: “You would be amazed how many subsea processes would be less complex if only the right tools were available. We decided to pro-actively develop those tools instead of waiting for clients to ask for a solution. It is our vision to share this knowledge with the offshore industry worldwide so that everyone can benefit from the marine assets and mission equipment we create. And what we get in return is a sharp focus on the latest developments in the offshore industry.” Some of the subsea tools Auxilium Offshore have developed include a remotely operated mattress installation and removal tool, a quadrant monitoring system for cable installation and repair plus a cable recovery clamp that reduces the operational time for choking a sling around the cable by ROV. i. www.auxiliumoffshore.nl

OSI OUTFITTERS PAGES Cost-Effective Subsea Navigation Technology

New UV-Resistant Colourfast Coating

Ashtead Technology has expanded its equipment rental pool following a significant investment in a stateof-the-art subsea navigation system which has been proved to deliver faster, more accurate results in the toughest environments. The iXblue RAMSES is an acoustic synthetic baseline positioning tool with selfcontained computing, for simple, efficient, real-time underwater navigation. Coupled with iXBlue inertial navigation system (INS), it delivers extreme precision in even the world’s most challenging seas. It can be used to track the position of subsea structures without the need for multiple transponders or umbilicals, enabling immediate and simplified mobilisation. Traditionally, achieving subsea accuracy required the deployment and calibration of subsurface equipment, an often lengthy and very costly process.

Subsea Industries has introduced a new UV-resistant coating to its portfolio of tough, non-toxic and environmentally – safe marine – hard coatings. Formulated to meet increasing demand for a hard coating capable of withstanding ultraviolet (UV) radiation, Ecolast offers the same high level of corrosion and abrasion protection common to all Subsea Industries’ coating systems, while completely preserving the colour of the original coating. Ecolast provides lasting colourfast protection to any application and the offshore wind segment is a primary market for Subsea Industries, given that the bottom part of wind turbine towers are painted in the same regulatory yellow for safety purposes. Application of Ecolast is done in two homogenous layers, with no need for primer or any other extra layers. This makes the application very fast and easy to adapt to the schedule of a yard.

Offshore Survival Solution SRG International has introduced the PS³, an innovative, practical, and effective life-saving device. The system incorporates a unique combination of a SOLAS life jacket with an auto-inflating single person life raft. Packaged into an ultra-slim, detachable, lightweight backpack, the PS³ weighs in at less than 5kg. Designed for low maintenance and fully approved to the latest SOLAS regulations, the automatic system is simple to operate with a front zip closure and separate side adjustment. The one-size-fits-all lifejacket is comfortable and unrestrictive while the single-person raft is simple to board and quickly provides the survivor with thermal protection. With high-visibility colours, SOLAS reflective tape and an automatic light to aid detection, the PS³ is a stable craft, even in extreme conditions. i. www.srg-international.com

Rugged Dome Cameras for Marine Applications Siqura has introduced two, all-new, full-HD marine dome cameras onto the market: the Xtreme HSD870H3-MDC and the ExPLORE HSD870H3EXP-MDC. These cameras give crisp, clear image quality and unparalleled video surveillance in harsh offshore and onshore environments. The Xtreme HSD870H3-MDC is designed to withstand shocks of up to 10 g, not uncommon in the offshore industry. On top of that, the ExPLORE HSD870H3EXP-MDC is also flame-resistant, for use in hazardous areas like Zone 1, for example. These cameras give operators real-time overviews of mission-critical operations, even in the most extreme conditions. The marine, oil and gas industries include the fast-paced world of drilling rigs and supertankers. Rewards can be high, but there are also risks. Incidents that are not dealt with immediately may interrupt operations and pose a threat to public safety. The HSD870H3MDC and HSD870H3EXP-MDC provide users with full-HD 1080p video quality at 60 frames per second. This results in crisp images and real-time control. For distribution and recording purposes, users can choose from four IP streams in optimal formats and quality. i. www.siqura.com

Pleasant networking At Yellow & Finch, we have been travelling a lot recently, visiting quite a number of important and interesting shows. The point of exhibiting is often a point of discussion, but in the offshore and maritime industry, most events still show impressive numbers of both exhibitors and visitors, proving that a lot of us consider this phenomenon as a valuable communication platform.

offshore business associates to take part in the official opening of their new impressive offices in Serooskerke. In addition to pleasant networking, we witnessed a really spectacular show with Zeeland Dancers, Brazilian Percussion and Chinese Lions.

The Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference in Amsterdam can be considered as a home game for us and of course we will be exhibiting. This show gets bigger every year. Not just in the numbers of exhibitors and visitors figures, but also with respect to the side programme, The point of exhibiting consisting of an interesting conference, the networking event is often discussed. and the opening gala dinner.

In early September we travelled to ONS in Stavanger and met a lot of people from offshore companies. In Hamburg we exhibited at SMM and a few weeks later we returned to this beautiful town to visit WindEnergy Hamburg. For a lot of companies SMM is still the major event to show their innovations. Every day was full of press conferences by companies informing the press about their products and services. We too had a very satisfying week, meeting and talking with a lot of existing and new business relations. At WindEnergy it became clear that wind energy is taking a leading role in renewable energy and that offshore wind farms are becoming increasingly important as the price of offshore wind becomes more and more competitive. At a stone’s throw from our office in Vlissingen, OOS International welcomed visitors to their Grand Opening. The young company invited international
