DBR has signed a contract with DOEN to be the Dutch and Belgian distributor of DOEN Waterjets. The axial flow waterjets deliver compact and efficient performance at speeds up to 45+ knots. The design and construction meet BV, DNV, Lloyds, Rina and other marine standards on customer specification. “We are very proud to combine our assembly facilities and knowledge with this high performance waterjet to offer our customers a total solution, especially for the DJ200 & DJ300 range,” says Mr Hafkamp of DBR. All DOEN Pre-Fabricated Intake Waterjets can be supplied in Direct Thrust Arrangement. The Integrated Waterjet IWJ method provides the simplest and most cost effective method for installing waterjets into fibreglass vessels. To simplify the
mechanical complexity and to further reduce the installation and maintenance costs, the waterjet shaft is arranged to thrust directly to the gearbox the same way as a conventional propeller arrangement. The waterjet can be fully integrated to the hull. “We selected DBR based on good recommendations from people in the marine industry and because of their ability to deliver complete jet propulsion packages, consisting of engines, gearboxes and jet drives, onto the market. This will give them a big advantage compared to the other jet suppliers,” says Mr Stephan Jørgensen of DOEN. The DOEN 200 + 300 series uses a CAN BUS electronic system. A fully-integrated multi-station waterjet, engine and marine gear control system providing alarm, monitoring function, back-up and emergency control.

Entering a New Era
The current oil prices and the rise of renewables will see the industry entering a new area. It is the ambition of the Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference (OEEC ) to combine those companies from the exploration and production side of conventional oil & gas energy resources with those companies from the renewable side of the energy mix, such as offshore wind and marine energy. On 25 and 26 October 2016 the Amsterdam RAI will again host the international gathering of the whole offshore energy industry, where exhibitors and visitors can meet more than 11,500 professionals, from engineering to sales, from procurement to finance and from project management to executive management. New this year will be the kick-off, the Offshore Energy Opening Gala Dinner, which will be held on 24 October from 18:30 and at which the Offshore Energy Awards will be presented. Also, Iran is the latest addition to the list of country pavilions OEEC will be hosting. The Iran pavilion is further strengthened by two technical conference sessions on the opportunities of doing business with this country.
Conference in Detail
The extensive conference programme, themed ‘Entering a new era’, will cover topics such as subsea processing & infrastructure, decommissioning, knowledge management,

asset integrity, supply chain optimisation and LNG, all lead by expert speakers and moderators. Aside from this, the keynotes, the Industry Panel and the Human Capital Panel, will be back again this year. The Offshore WIND Conference (OWC) will again be part of OEEC, taking place on 24 and 25 October also at the Amsterdam RAI, to further strengthen OEECs connection to renewables. During OWC, speakers from the industry will discuss how more business opportunities can be found and how the industry can reach its potential. More knowledge about renewables can be garnered during the Marine Energy event, organised in partnership with EWA, as well as at the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) symposium, which is an annual meeting that brings together OTEC industry, researchers and market experts from all over the world. More information can be found on www.offshoreenergy.biz.

New Range of Naval Multi-Role Auxiliary Vessels
Damen Shipyards Group has announced the introduction of a new range of Multi-Role Auxiliary Vessels (MRAV). The common theme running through the series is the provision of a basic platform offering reliable and cost-effective multi-role potential and hydrographic survey capabilities to naval clients. With the addition of supplementary modular mission equipment, this new family of Damen vessels can be mobilised in numerous, mainly littoral, naval tasks such as: explosive ordnance clearance and disposal, diving operations, torpedo recovery and overhaul. The largest version of the range will be able to operate worldwide, on the ocean as well as in littoral waters. This ship has additional capabilities such as disaster and humanitarian relief, oceanography and naval training support.
Stemat Orders Active Heave Compensation Crane In June 2015, Stemat signed an order with Heila Cranes for the construction of a new HR4070 active heave compensated crane with a 34m boom and a 140t lifting capacity, to be installed on one of its vessels, Stemat Spirit. The multi-purpose cable-laying vessel is able to do the work offshore and in very shallow areas. “With the changes in demand from clients and to launch and recover the burial tools, Stemat sought a reliable active heave compensated crane with strong offshore capabilities to replace the 300t crawler crane on the after-deck. Therefore, Stemat required a tailor-made solution able to fit on our vessel and satisfy our needs in the best possible way,” says Henk van Wingerden, Manager of Stemat’s Technical Department.

Founded by Luciano Ghiaroni in 1985, Italgroup is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. In addition to its head office in Italy, the company operates a sales office in Shanghai to service the Far East market. Clients of Italgroup appreciate the reliability and the sustainable approach of the company. In order to ensure the company’s future, the second family generation is already on its starting blocks. In the beginning, Italgroup used to focus on injection moulding machines for the plastic industry. Step by step, the business expanded into other areas and started to offer new applications such as winch-drives, cutter-head drives, stump grinders and many others. Currently, we recognise a strong demand for energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly solutions. For sure, this will be an important business field in the coming years. news in brief Record After-Treatment Systems Lifespan
REINTJES Gearboxes The best choice for your vessel! For over 75 years already, REINTJES Benelux – based in Antwerp – handles sales and services of REINTJES gear boxes and reversing gears for Dutch shipping, dredging, fishery, luxurious yachts, shortsea, sea-going and inland navigation... Our service department is available for all spare parts as well as repairs. Whether it is an inspection or repair, our team of experienced service engineers is always there for you and assures you the reliability and quality REINTJES represents.
Emigreen’s exhaust-gas after-treatment systems have broken all records. Recently, the system they installed in the Anda, a barge from the Netherlands, passed the historic 30,000-hour limit. Using the same technology and innovation, Emigreen has also developed and installed post-treatment systems for organisations in other market segments including the 60m Feadship (2010) and a gas station (2012), all with unprecedented durability and performance. This pioneer in the Dutch and European market appears, therefore, to be the only one which can effortlessly meet the new European requirement of 10,000 operating hours. For founder and engineer Niko Dalpis, the news does not come as a surprise: “Whether our after-treatment systems run in the shipping, energy or industrial sector, they always deliver unprecedented performance. Many of our products have been running since 2005. We don’t actually see a challenge in those 10,000 hours. You could say that we are 10 years ahead of time.” The sophisticated, high-performance after-treatment system in the Anda consists of a particulate filter and an SCR catalytic converter, which reduces NOx emissions by about 90%. Not only does this comfortably meet the toughest emission requirements, but the system also conforms to the Shipping Inspection’s stringent noise prerequisites.

news in brief Radio Holland Completes Refits for Holland America Line Radio Holland has successfully completed two major bridge refit contracts on behalf of Holland America Line under very tight deadlines. These bridge retrofits carried out by Radio Holland USA on Holland America Line’s cruise ships Oosterdam and Prinsendam, followed refit work on M/S Noordam and Westerdam in 2014 and 2015. The bridge refit on board the M/S Oosterdam was concluded in Palermo, Sicily in early May. Then just days later Radio Holland continued with a bridge upgrade project for the M/S Prinsendam, which took place in Freeport, Grand Bahama.

60 years of expertise
Business Strong as Steel Walking through its Warehouses, there’s no denying the Holland-based supplying steel company stigterstaal Has an enormous amount of sHipbuilding steel on stock. tHe isocertified company sets its own course in supplying steel and takes over the role of supply chain logistics provider. shipbuilding industry talked to chief operations officer lex smaal about how they first started as an authentic, family-run business, and still manage to do so after 60 years.

ccording to mr smaal, one of the main focal points is to maintain an independent business and guarantee continuity. “We’re no ordinary stockholder, as we set our own course in supplying steel and manage the entire logistic chain.” this business has serviced a lot of dutch and foreign shipbuilders and repair yards through the years. Which is why they will not let their 60th anniversary go by unnoticed. “We’re celebrating our anniversary at the smm in Hamburg together with customers, suppliers and partners, as they’re at the forefront of our business,” said mr smaal.

Top-Notch Steel
The warehouses in Gorinchem, nearby Rotterdam, have a stock of 50,000t of steel. They source their certified steel from topnotch steel manufacturers worldwide. “We basically provide all steel components for shipbuilding, it’s a so-called one-stop shop for the shipbuilding industry,” explains Mr Smaal. Fast delivery, including SA-2,5 grade shot-blasting and painting and a modern certificate management system – 3.2 inspection certificates will be provided before delivery— are just some of the benefits Stigterstaal offers clients.

They are also in close contact with all IACS members: fast-track recertification leading to quick delivery, support for additional testing, a favourable location and familiarity with all transport modalities for fast on-site deliveries worldwide. “Our materials also find their way to steel plate cutting and profiling firms, construction companies and machine factories,” adds Mr Smaal. “We mainly focus on orders with challenging and/or demanding specifications. By closely collaborating with reputable and reliable steel mills, we can respond to these
Stigterstaal is located nearby waterways and motorways in the heart of the Netherlands, with Rotterdam and Antwerp both within 80km from Gorinchem, for efficient transport by road and water. With its own port on the river Merwede, transport by inland waterways and sea is easy to arrange, both for receipt of materials and order shipment.

demands and deliver products to specification on favourable conditions. That’s when our customers come to appreciate a supplier that can deliver any specification required from stock.”
Making a Difference
But it is not just the huge amount on stock that got the company to where it is today. Its pro-active approach and employees also makes it stand out from the rest. With 50 people working at Stigterstaal, it is a relatively small company, but one with big ambitions. “We have dedicated and experienced employees who do their utmost to meet the customers’ needs,” mentions Mr Smaal. “In the last five years, we professionalised our sales department and now regularly fly all over the world to visit our clients. Good service and short lines of communication, both internally and with customers, is what makes a difference,” explains Mr Smaal.
www.s h i p b u i l d i n g -industr y.eu
Stigterstaal.indd 19
“Our team’s added value is that we manage the whole logistics chain, rather than just selling our steel. From plain steel up to transport to the shipyard, we have the whole route covered. For example, we send customers a pre-announcement listing all specifications and stating precisely when their order will be delivered. Then they know where they stand, we can avoid unpleasant surprises and process orders with a quick turn-around time whenever necessary.”
Pro-Active Approach
Upon asking Mr Smaal about the biggest change for Stigterstaal over the years, he responds that the company remains the same at heart, though communication has certainly changed drastically. “In the beginning you had to send letters and it would take at least one week before you heard any reply. Now we send emails and we have real-time conversations with
customers from the other side of the world. Nowadays you have to act pro-actively, instead of just waiting for the customer to find you. In order for us to provide excellent service, we have to continuously analyse market trends.” Another aspect that has changed over the years is the amount of warehouses in Gorinchem. “We have built a new warehouse every five years and we managed to double our stock in the last decade. We may in future require even more space for stock-keeping. Reflecting on the last 60 years, I must say that I’m mostly proud of the fact that we have managed to build bridges between countries and cultures, servicing the international industry.” i. www.stigterstaal.nl

Expectations for Performance
More InternatIonal than ever
SMM 2016 the countdown Is on! FroM 6 to 9 septeMber, sMM wIll take place at the hamburg trade-fair complex. the event is drawing huge interest: more than 2,100 exhibitors have registered and over 50,000 industry visitors from roughly 100 nations are expected to attend. Just as in record year 2014, the fair is fully-booked months in advance. with the new hall a5 for green propulsion and the focus on digitalisation, this year’s smm will be a beacon event for the industry.
shipping companies, shipyards, equipment suppliers and port operators currently have to deal with enormous changes. their financial base is under attack from low freight and charter rates, increased pressure of costs and dramatic changes in the flow of goods. at the same time, requirements for safety and environmental protection are increasing – as are market expectations for performance. but those in positions of responsibility in the industry know that it is no use simply complaining. the industry has to look to the future. it needs innovative solutions for changing business models. smm can and will provide major stimuli and answers to pressing questions from the industry.
Digitisation and Big Data
T
he platform for the exchange of information, inspiration and (another important aspect) closing business deals, will be more international than ever before; only about one-third of the exhibitors come from germany and two-thirds from abroad – a new record. new to the family are iran, malaysia and greece, each with their own national pavilion.

digitisation is a key theme for the whole of the smm. exhibitors in all the halls present their developments via digitisation and big data. the maritime future summit will be held on 5 september, the day before the opening of smm, with software experts and managers of leading propulsion systems manufacturers discussing the impact of smart shipping and big data on tomorrow’s shipping. another key subject at smm is green propulsion. the layout of hall a5 is

TRADE SHOW especially designed for this topic this year, and provides 3,500m2 of additional space. this is dedicated exclusively to innovative propulsion technologies. the hall is already fully booked. alongside the maritime future summit, this year they again have gmec – global maritime environmental congress, on 6 september in cooperation with seatrade. one day later, the focus will be on security and defence, with ms&d – the international conference on maritime security and defence. the offshore dialogue on 8 september features leading speakers from the international maritime industry, the scientific community, universities and government organisations. the maritime career market – a stand-alone event without the character of a conference – covers a new aspect of the industry and brings together skilled workers and potential employers in the maritime industries. all in all, trade visitors at smm 2016 will find some 150 programme items, including a large number of workshops, symposia and presentations. this range of events is unmatched in the maritime world.
Shaking Up the Market
another strength of smm has always been the enormous bandwidth covered by its exhibitors. the complete value chain is reflected here, from impressive large-scale exhibits to smart software solutions. this year again, all the global key players will be there and also young innovative start-ups which aim to shake up the market. this

helps visitors to grasp the enormous range of products and services and the countless ideas which really move the industry forward. the innovations of the exhibitors are traditionally very much a focus of smm. but this industry fair is also constantly reinventing itself. an example of this is the ‘exhibition routes’, a method we are using to help visitors find their way around the exhibition halls. in keeping with the conferences and focal areas at smm 2016, there will be a Job route, a digital route, a green route and a security route. from august 2016 these guidance systems will be provided in the product directory online and in the smm app. that will assist visitors in finding the way to their specific subjects more easily.

Knowhow is being integrated more and more in applications and (big)data, in the form of algorithms, closedloop control parameters and recipes. new chances arising from the offer of new services such as online monitoring and maintenance require secure communication routes, separated access areas and manipulation-proof logging. ultimately, the operator must protect parties if he wants to ensure the responsible use of his own solution. the requirements of regulations and standards have forced suppliers and operators into taking concrete measures. particularly in critical areas, the devices and software from bachmann electronic are the preferred solution. different protective measures such as secured network connections, user and access control and security logging have been integral elements of every bachmann controller for several years. the existing security concept is constantly being examined according to the latest standards and regulations and further developed jointly with our customers, not just since stuxnet or duqu.

HOISTING & LIFTING a rigging set that is able to resist extremely low temperatures of up to -50°c. in many cases, these requests require precision work. we recently removed eight 52mm cables with a length of 700m to allow maintenance on the wire drums. afterwards, the cables had to be put back in exactly the same way. an interesting challenge.”
Quick Response
adrie nieuwenhuize, project manager at liftal, adds: “many of our customers mainly want us to take the job off their hands, because they don’t know what needs to be done and how. we ensure that the work gets done quickly, in a professional manner, and at an attractive price. cma recently asked us to test all the equipment on board of a ship in four ports at which the ship would dock: southampton, hamburg, Bremen and rotterdam. Due to the fast work pace, it was no longer necessary to carry out any maintenance in rotterdam. this is the kind of result we strive for.”
unexpectedly need additional materials while at sea.”
Rental & Maintenance
liftal also rents out project equipment like spreaders, solid weights and rigging, to test whether or not unloading can be safely carried out. mr hirdes explains: “special water bags with a capacity of 100t, in combination with fixed weights connected to a spreader, are often used for this purpose, as water bags are much easier to transport than steel weights. in addition to testing, we also specialise in maintenance: from hoisting beams in the nuclear industry in france, to a gas plant in tunisia and the radar towers in the Dutch westerschelde estuary.”
Skilled Personnel
in recent years, liftal has substantially invested in staff training. mr hirdes adds:
Recent Projects Project Isaac Newton: • load test tensioner with custom-made test pipe/proof load max. 20t. • load test offshore crane with water bags and calibrated load cell/proof load max. 180t.
Project Skandi Vitoria: • load test main offshore crane with calibrated load cell and water bags/proof load max. 170t. • load test a frame with solid test weights and calibrated load cell/proof load max. 88t.
Project Cormorant (floating crane): • load test mainframe with test barge and calibrated load cell. • load test aux hoist with water bag and calibrated load cell.
Project Harkand Atlantis: • Brake holding test of four winches with hydraulic test equipment. • load test gangways with closed water bags evenly distributed over the steps. • load test moB davit with water bag and calibrated load cell.
On Location
although most of the testing takes place in ports, it can also be carried out on location at sea. mr nieuwenhuize explains that, though this is often feasible, there are also challenges. “sometimes we carry out tests at sea, a while ago we needed to replace all the steel wire ropes of a diving support vessel. it quickly became apparent that the work involved four cranes instead of just one, as well as casting a socket at the end of the wires. our people were on board for a week and got the job done. But it does require improvisation skills if you
“the number of employees increased to over 40, all fully qualified. we currently have eighteen eKh certified inspectors; six for (overhead) cranes and twelve for general rigging. consequently, more inspections can be executed on site, which speeds up the process. since joining the British trade association leea, liftal can also provide its services in other counties. furthermore, we have created a testing corner in our workshop. all this additional capacity allows us to provide even quicker service to our customers.”
Experience
mr nieuwenhuize explains why it is always wise to let liftal personnel carry out the tests. “our rental department rents all necessary testing materials that some companies use to tackle the job. Due to lack of experience, this occasionally goes wrong. our employees are skilled in determining any risks. following formal procedures and assessing risks in advance helps to clearly specify the work and eliminates risks, ensuring the safe start and completion of the job.” i. www.liftal.com

Beyond Barriers Iran’s growIng market has caught the eye of trade-faIr orgaNIser rotterdam ahoy aNd made them aware of New busIness opportunItIes. from thIs year on, europort (organIsed by rotterdam ahoy) will be the official partner of Iranimex, the leading maritime and offshore exhibition in Iran, which takes place on the Iranian island of kish. raymond siliakis, rotterdam ahoy’s exhibition manager, explains how this cooperation will open new trade doors.
E
“
uroport has been studying the Iranian market potential for a long time, as they believed this could be a mayor market for the industry,” said mr siliakis. europort was the first international maritime show to host an Iran pavilion even before the Iranian trade sanctions were lifted. now Iran is opening up to the world and there are huge opportunities for maritime and offshore equipment suppliers, shipbuilders, ship owners and service providers.
Joining Forces
mr siliakis explains: “with the two organisations joining forces, we can combine the blueprint of Iranimex with the international expertise of europort. basically, rotterdam ahoy is responsible for the international marketing and servicing of all international exhibitors, whereas our Iranian partners are involved with domestic promotion, contracting local exhibitors and managing local operations.” with around 300 exhibitors, 60% will be from Iran and 40% are expected to be from other nations.

SPECIAL FEATURE
“Iranian ship owners, shipyards, port managements and high-ranking Iranian oil and gas sector personnel will be our key target group, but we do expect to attract quite a lot of international visitors as well, especially from the Middle East area.”
Need for Solutions
The main subject of the 2016 show is maritime and offshore technology. This includes making new business contacts and exploring new partnerships. “We must realise that for many companies, this will be the first occasion that it has been possible to do business with Iran in many years. In Iran there is an eagerness to invest in offshore exploration since they are sitting on the third largest oilfield in the world as well as the second largest in natural gas. This demands new ships, platforms and services,” Mr Siliakis added. An investment of USD 120 billion in fleet renewal, refurbishing and renovation has already been announced by the Iranian Government. There is an urgent need for technological solutions and Iran’s industry is not equipped to satisfy even the smallest part of the demand. Iran’s growing
economy will increase the demand for luxury items by its 81 million inhabitants and accelerate import, making both tankers as well as container vessels a focal point for internationally operating ship owners. Port development will lead to a growing fleet of work and patrol boats as well as necessary dredging operations. The exhibition has something to offer everyone working in this field. In addition to the trade fair, Iranimex is also going to host the 18th Marine Industry Conference. The conference will cover a wide range of topics including procurement engineering, post-sanction marine marketing, domestic and international investments, oil and gas technologies, marine safety, environmental protection methods, ship design, ship maintenance, the installation and implementation of offshore structures, renewable energy and new technologies, robotic and underwater equipment.
a new project is always exciting and in a way it is hard to make a prediction for the next five years at this early stage. There are many factors, both economical and political, that we cannot control or influence. What we do recognise is that since sanctions have been lifted, Iran is making huge steps forward and it is hard to catch up with all the news. There is a saying ‘to strike while the iron is hot’ and this is obviously the case with Iran. “Our aim for this year is to realise the strong and successful introduction of all international companies that will be joining Iranimex. In five years’ time, the exhibition should have grown to be the leading meeting place for the maritime and offshore industry in the whole region.” i. www.iranimex.ir

Ms Koningsdam Ms KoningsdaM is the first ship of the new pinnacle class from the holland america line (hal). the 99,500t vessel, built at fincantieri’s marghera shipyard, accommodates 2,650 guests and is the ultimate expression of holland america line’s brand evolution. Koningsdam introduces several innovative concepts and new public spaces and venues, while still including popular amenities which guests associate with the cruise line. the ship features holland america line’s first purpose-built staterooms for families and solo travellers.
Dutch Heritage
the name pays homage to the company’s rich heritage and deep roots in the netherlands. it honours his majesty King Willem-alexander, the first king of the netherlands in over a century. many of holland america line’s ships have been christened by members of the dutch royal family over the past 75 years and the tradition continued when her majesty Queen máxima of the netherlands christened the Koningsdam in a ceremony in rotterdam in may of this year. stein Kruse, ceo of the holland america group, stated: “this new pinnacle class ship will be our largest, most contemporary vessel, and it was only fitting to give it a name that embodies great achievement for the future, while embracing timeless tradition.”
Architecture of Music
holland america line invited adam d. tihany, one of the world’s pre-eminent hospitality designers, to create the visual drama and beautiful interiors which embellish the vessel. mr tihany joined distinguished maritime designer and architect bjørn storbraaten, who also

worked with the cruise line on eurodam and nieuw amsterdam. the two firms crafted an interior that creates perfect harmony between the blend of fresh, contemporary styling and the line’s renowned classic elegance. focusing on fluid curves and graceful lines, light-filled spaces and a natural flow in public areas, mr tihany’s metaphorical approach to the interiors of the Koningsdam was inspired by the ‘architecture of music’. “the idea was to tell a story that guests can connect with throughout their voyage,” said mr tihany. “i was inspired by the thought of what you might see from the inside of a musical instrument; what the architecture of the surfaces and the geometry look like.”

following its inaugural european season in 2016, holland america line’s new ms Koningsdam will homeport at port everglades in fort lauderdale. the ship will sail on a series of caribbean voyages and one cruise to the bahamas from november 2016 through to march 2017.

Key to his concept is the utilisation of visual interaction, where guests actively engage in the architecture rather than passively moving through it. “the design isn’t a literal translation of music, but a conceptual approach where we seek to evoke the feeling and beauty of an instrument with graceful lines, dramatic textures, lighting effects and use of materials,” he said. “my inspiration came not only from instruments, but also majestic spaces and an exaggerated feeling of height, so guests feel the grandeur of every room.”
Floating Clouds
mr storbraaten’s hand can clearly be seen in the design of the central pool area. the magrodome, which is typically a single level on holland america line ships, has been expanded to two levels to create a vast glass-enclosed space. the lower level has more traditional poolside elements, while the mezzanine level is a new concept for the brand. in addition to other areas, mr storbraaten has designed an exotic look for the tamarind, the line’s pan-asian restaurant, which emphasises nature’s basic elements: water, wood, fire and earth. at the heart of the ship mr tihany has created visual drama with the central atrium. soaring three decks high, the space is graced by an airy stainless-steel sculpture that represents the synthesis of a string quartet. like music, the experience changes as guests move around and through it, so no two

perspectives are the same. the atrium is capped by a ceiling ‘skylight’ that serves as a backdrop for subtly changing high-definition projections. guests will look up by day and see wispy cirrus clouds floating in an azure sky or perhaps soothing images of light in water. by evening, the atrium takes on dramatic lighting hues or reflects the starlit constellations of the night sky.
Sensual Curves
the main dining room aboard ms Koningsdam spans two stories and is framed by views of the sea. a bright interior is inspired by a modern, global design and sets the stage for the exceptional culinary experience to come. strong, curved architectural pillars accentuate the soaring ceiling. chic, custom furnishings and modern glass lighting have been fabricated especially for the ship. the centrepiece is a curved copper sheath surrounding a twostory wine tower showcasing an impressive selection. the iconic Queen’s lounge has been completely re-conceived as an elegant, twostorey theatre and entertainment venue. mr tihany once again drew inspiration for the space from music, with a nod to the sensual curves of a violin and featuring extensive use of wood, fluid waveforms and light. With state-of-the-art technology, the Queen’s lounge showcases world-class musicians and is the largest dance floor on the ship.

ompared with electrically operated hoists, Jdn airpowered equipment offers a wider range of operations that can be safely undertaken in outdoor, damp, dirty or even hazardous areas as well as indoors in dusty or potentially explosive atmospheres. typical performance advantages include easy installation with robust, low-maintenance compact designs combining reduced weights and easy handling with 100% duty rating toughness. Operating air pressures range from 4 to 6 bar, with lube-free performance also ensuring non-pollution of the environment as the exhaust air is oil-free. A range of optional pendant controllers are available to provide sensitive, infinitely variable speed controls for the safe and precise positioning of suspended

Rugged and Versatile
profi ti hoists comprise the major lifting equipment in the JDN range. there are a total of nineteen models with load capacities from 250kg up to an impressive 100t per unit. these hoists all incorporate a top suspension hook mounting so that multiple hoists can be utilised for single load handling, thus enabling oblique lifting typically required for ship rudder or propeller mount/dismount operations (compliance with special safety precautions also apply). these rugged and versatile products can also be used for horizontal pulling. where horizontal movements of suspended loads of up to 20t need to be executed, the profi ti hoists can be trolleymounted on overhead support rails which include curved sections for smooth, continuous trolley movement. the horizontal trolley movements can be achieved either manually or by reel chain or

ver 20 years we have grown to an engineering group employing over 300 people present in three countries with seven offices. We intend to continue this growth in a sustainable way while developing further into the same emerging markets as our current group of customers, but always into markets that are close enough as well geographically, as being complementary to our current engineering playing field. We will only invest in new office infrastructure if it clearly would serve the benefit of our customers, e.g. due to the need of physical presence close to the production facilities in order to enhance communication lines during projects,” states Chief

This was the start of a success story with definite roots in the maritime world, but which was expanded over the years into industry, and later building and infrastructure as well. Over these 20 years MULTI has experienced constant growth, while simultaneously retaining its family character. Important clients MULTI has worked for include IHC, DEME, Geosea, Jan De Nul, Parkwind, Belwind, Fabricom, UOP, Huisman Equipment, Scaldis, Damen, De Hoop Lobith, Eide, Tideway, G&G and Gardec.
Challenge Perspective
“Throughout our existence we have successfully overcome some economic crises, we met quite a few technical challenges during the over 1,500 design and engineering projects, we have grown from a single company to a multi-satellite group with offices in the Netherlands, Belgium and Slovakia, and recently we have moved to a centralised One MULTI Group,” says Mr Fierens. MULTI sees each and every challenge has always been approached in the same way: common sense, focus on the positive side and the future, and where needed with the help of external specialists. Challenges that are currently being worked on include the implementations of the new group structure and maintaining a fast and flexible customer service within a continuously growing organisation. “We devote a great deal of

attention to personal contact with customers. A successful formula – after all, the better you know your customers, the better you can anticipate their needs and requirements. We also aim to be a good employer to its engineers. Effective support, good training, and a personal touch ensure that experts start each day keen to do their job,” states Mr Fierens. And the list does not end there. MULTI will continue to invest in hiring and training of their engineers, with the intention to enhance their presence in the offshore engineering market and focus even more on concept and basic designs, consultancy and operational support towards customers present in the Offshore Support and Installation market. “We are looking forward to intensify our cooperation with shipyards, designers and asset owners on innovative and ever challenging vessels and offshore projects,” Mr Fierens concludes.
The shareholders of the Antwerp-based specialist in marine heavy lift operations have ordered an extremely powerful, self-propelled DP2 crane ship from Royal IHC. The concept and basic design of the ship and cranes were made by Vuyk Engineering Rotterdam. MULTI performed with the detail design of this heavy lift vessel, including piping and outfitting.
i. www.multi.engineering Pipingcare awarded MULTI to perform the detailed engineering, including routing, for the piping of the hydraulic system of the Jack-Up Vessel Aeolus. The hydraulic system is, among other, used to operate the jacking system of the vessel.
For a new-built vessel, MULTI designed the cable-laying spread to be installed on the main deck, including the gooseneck guide, quadrants, overboard chutes, intermediate tensioning platform and operation tower. The scope included strength calculations using FEM. S B I 2016 | Vo l u me 10 | I s s u e 4 | 4 9

he ecoship project will result in a ship that will minimise environmental impact to an extent that surpasses the current bestin-practice. In addition, the ship’s design, with its iconic hull, inspired by the humpback whale, and its unmistakable solar panel-covered sail masts, will be a highly visible demonstration of sustainability in action in every port that it visits.
A Different Approach
building the planet’s most environmentally sustainable ocean-going cruise ship demanded a radically different approach with a particular emphasis on the development of the concept and the choice of technologies. the design of the ship was finalised in 2015, after a 3-year process involving an international team using an integrative design procedure that has harnessed the expertise of many specialties and both marine and land-based industrial sectors. It required a wholesystem integrated design approach to the project; A concept derived from the belief that elements of a system work best when they are specifically designed to complement, rather than to compensate, each other.

Multi-Disciplinary Charrette
In April 2014, world experts on naval architecture, marine engineering, renewable energy, energy efficiency, maritime law, biomimicry, and biophilia, gathered for an Ecoship design charrette in Hamburg, Germany. This multi-disciplinary charrette approach had never before been applied within the cruise industry and the innovative outcomes formed the basis of the Ecoship specifications. A focused consultation process was instigated to investigate the feasibility of the subsequent innovations. The technological aspects were: hull shape and hull design; natural ventilation; best fuel options; LNG bunkering alternatives; sails, sail retractability and sail resistance; wind energy generation; heat recovery on board; solar energy efficiency and available garden and botanical choices.
Nature-Inspired Technology and Design Hull Configuration hull design is an important factor in fuel efficiency. Originally inspired by the shape of the whale (inverted bow or equivalent),

the hull has undergone parametric modelling using the most advanced techniques with special emphasis on savings and hydrodynamics. Experts believe that an appropriate hull shape could result in up to a 5% reduction in fuel consumption. Anti Water-Drag Technology The hull will be fitted with anti-drag underwater technology which will contribute to the improvement of hull performance. ‘Air lubrification systems’, which use a bed of air bubbles at the base of the hull, are already readily available.
>>
CO2 Reduction A key deliverable is an estimated 40% CO2 reduction in comparison with a cruise ship with conventional propulsion built before 2000; and an estimated 30% reduction compared to a good current design. These results will be achieved through the combination of propulsion efficiency, hull shape, accommodation efficiency, hull air bubbles and renewable technologies, as well as by route, speed and management measures.

The green heart and lungs of the Ecoship will be the plant kingdom, a garden spanning five decks with a volume of over 900m3.
Aerodynamic Design The external design will minimise air-drag. Elements that contribute to this minimisation are the total exterior volume of the ship and its shape, as well as the position and design of the retractable sails and wind generators. Aerodynamic ship design is generally considered a prerequisite for optimal energy use. Natural Ventilation The forward and lateral gardens will work as chillers for the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system. Outside air will be forced into the gardens where water spray will evaporate, providing the cooling effect. Additionally, air circulating from the ship’s accommodation will cool down the incoming air after it’s been treated in the gardens. This chiller water circuit method is designed to save about 20% in A/C electric power when compared to a conventional compression system. In order not to mix up air sources, heat exchange will be carried out by means of air-to-air enthalpy wheels.
Planet Kingdom
The green heart and lungs of the Ecoship will be the plant kingdom, a garden spanning five decks with a volume of over 900m3. Together with the vessel’s four green

towers, it will absorb surplus technical water; utilise compost from organic onboard waste; and revitalise the vessel’s air through CO2 capture and O2 release as well as being a key element of the HVAC system. The species in the plant kingdom and towers will be chosen for their adaptability to the ship’s conditions, and will also produce vegetables for consumption on-board. The plant kingdom, designed according to biophilic principles, will be the backdrop for the ship’s sustainability learning programs and research as well as a source of inspiration and comfort for the ship’s passengers and visitors.
Post-Carbon Future With the world eager to find positive and innovative solutions for a sustainable post-carbon future, Peace Boat’s Ecoship project has been making waves at global events. The Ecoship was presented at the United Nations’ COP 21 Climate Change Meeting in Paris in December 2015, and the World Future Energy Summit at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) in January 2016.

Record-Breaking Engine Enters Service The largest and most powerful engine ever designed and built from MAN Diesel & Turbo’s portfolio has entered service. Built by Doosan Engine in Korea and rated at 75,570kW, the engine is a MAN B&W 11G95ME-C9.5 two-stroke type that acts as the prime mover aboard the ‘MSC Jade’. The 19,437teu container vessel is operated by global container shipping company Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). Daewoo Shipbuilding (DSME) delivered the newbuild on 20 May, which subsequently sailed the short distance to Busan. The MSC Jade also features 4 × MAN L32/40 auxiliary engines (2 × 8L32/40 + 2 × 9L32/40 units), each with a single MAN NR34/S turbocharger.
Hempel launched the new two-component pure epoxy coat, Hempadur Quattro XO 17820, in Canada, the US and Mexico. Responding to customer needs, this high performance two-component pure epoxy PSPC-compliant coating (Performance Standard for Protective Coatings) has been developed for the marine newbuilding sector. Hempadur Quattro XO 17820 was developed for water ballast tanks in new vessels, however it can also be used as a uni-primer for most vessel areas – above and below the waterline – providing high quality performance and peace of mind for customers. The coating has been created specifically to suit the working methods of shipbuilders and thus incorporates shorter re-coat intervals and reduces maintenance costs. Additionally, its higher (80%) volume solids ratio means fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released into the atmosphere, which is preferred in North America. i. www.hempel.com
MXP Turbocharger ABB Turbocharging presented its first dedicated turbocharger, for marine auxiliary engine applications, in a development cooperation with IHI Corporation. Designed for ease of operation and service, it supports a condition-based maintenance concept. MXP has been designed for auxiliary engines with a power output of up to 2MW, operating under HFO conditions. In this dedicated product, the complexity of parts required in turbochargers with broader usage has been simplified for the specific operational requirements of this market. These include: ease of maintenance by the crew, based on condition, as well as optimised load response behaviour and improved efficiency at part load, which both contribute to fuel savings. i. www.abb.com
