Innovation is Key We are pleased to end this year With the publication of the sixth issue of shipbuilding industry. it has been quite a chaotic year, With hanjin’s fall, the collapsing container shipping rates and overcapacity. nevertheless, the shipbuilding industry found a way out of negativity. this year it exceeded itself by building special purpose Vessels. in this issue we feature offshore wind/soV vessel Windea la cour. this vessel just recently entered service at the gemini offshore wind farm in the north sea (page 10). in september, deMe launched the world’s most advanced subsea cable installation and trenching vessel, living stone (page 48). the dp ii anchor handling salvage tug, alp striker, (page 38) achieved impressive and highly satisfactory bollard pull results of 309.6t during her sea-trials in september. and last but not least we feature heavy lift specialised jack-up barge Zourite (page 28). the 107m-long floating-unit was specifically built for the construction of france’s longest (5.4km) offshore viaduct. but there is more, with the bWM convention coming into force in 2017, environment and sustainability are high on the agenda. this also reflects on special paint systems and coatings. you will read more about these innovations in our paint systems and coating special. these developments prove once again that the industry will innovate its way out of troubled times. anoeshka | eDItoR anoeshka@ynfpublIsheRs.com

On the Cover DEME launched the world’s most advanced subsea cable installation and trenching vessel, Living Stone, in September. The vessel is engineered with the latest innovations in its category. It is equipped with two turntables below deck, each having a 5,000t cable capacity. Together, the turntables can carry and transport more than 200km of cable that can be installed in a single trip. Living Stone will be deployed by DEME’s Dutch subsidiary Tideway in the offshore renewable energy market and is scheduled to be delivered in the second quarter of 2017.

news in brief GE’s Marine Solution for Emission Levels

Digital Measurement and Data Logging

GE has recently launched a series of diesel engines which meet the IMO tier III and EPA tier 4 standards. In order to comply with the latest emissions standards, marine operators can either reduce the NOx emission by means of after treatment of the exhaust gas coming out of the engine or address the NOx formation within the combustion chamber of the engine. GE’s diesel engine emissions reduction technology includes deployment of EGR, high pressure common rail fuel injection, increased peak cylinder pressure (enabled by a dual stage turbo) and an advanced miller cycle.

Hydraulic Data loggers are digitised electronic devices that record data over a period of time. They are generally quite small, battery powered and designed to be portable and easy to use, however, some can be a bit bigger and aren’t a stand-alone piece of equipment, but instead require some software to activate and allow them to be used. Hydrotechnik supply a high quality range of instruments and sensors. They allow you to acquire data that is helpful to find faults when performances drop or before catastrophic failure occurs. In The Netherlands, Hydrotechnik is represented by R&S Hydrauliek.

LGN-powered Icebreaker Delivered

M

Arctech Helsinki Shipyard delivered a newcomer in the Finnish Icebreaker fleet, icebreaker Polaris. The prototype vessel is designed to serve for at least 50 years in icebreaking, oil recovery and sea rescue operations. Innovative design is used for the vessel’s hull form and propulsion unit arrangement, and the vessel is able to use either liquefied natural gas or low sulphur diesel oil as fuel. The vessel complies with the international IMO Tier III emission standards and special requirement for Sulphur emissions in the Baltic Sea. It is equipped with three Azipod propulsion units rotating at 360°.

The icebreaking capacity of Polaris is 1,8m at speed of 3,5 knots.

Fishing vessel MDV 1 Immanuel was voted Ship of the Year 2016.

Focus on Ship of the Year 2016 Maritime sector rakes in the prizes during the 2016 Maritime Awards Gala. After the opening speech by Prime Minister Mark Rutte, the five most important maritime sector awards were presented this evening during the Maritime Awards Gala that is part of the Maritime Week. In the presence of some 800 maritime professionals, politicians and interested parties, the fishing vessel MDV 1 Immanuel was voted Ship of the Year 2016. This makes the vessel the new standard bearer for entrepreneurial spirit and innovation within the maritime sector. With innovation in the maritime industry one often sees that just one aspect is subject to a new development, for example the propulsion. But this is not the case with the Immanuel – here almost everything about this fishing cutter has been freshly designed. The vessel’s shape, arrangement, materials and construction, propulsion installation and fish processing are all innovations in comparison to the traditional North Sea cutters.

Innovation was widely highlighted during this gala, in five different award categories. The KVNR Shipping Award 2016 was presented to the combined submission from the Holland America Line (HAL) and the Center for Simulator Maritime Training (CSMART). The Royal Netherlands Navy van HengelSpengler Award was awarded to Marine Lieutenant Sietske Vredeveldt for her winning thesis entitled ‘Analysis of the current shock-absorbing chairs on the FRISC.’ The Maritime Innovation Award was handed to the Integrated Monopile Installer from IHC IQIP that ensures safer, more efficient and more accurate installation of the largest monopiles in the offshore wind sector and for the Maritime Designer Award the jury chose Etienne Duchateau as its winner, with his method for an interactive and controllable exploration of ship designs.

He has come up with an unconventional and at the same time highly effective approach to conceptual designs.

news in brief MV Werften Invests in Rostock Yard The shipyard group is to build a new production hall with an advanced laser-hybrid welding line in Rostock as part of its total investment plan. With the new line, the shipyard group will be able to handle the planned cruise shipbuilding projects with large amounts of thin steel plate construction. The so called laser-hybrid technique offers a new high-quality and effective welding method by providing higher speed at less energy and heat input, thus causing less distortion and subsequently considerably lowering straightening work. In contrast to traditional steel processing, this technology allows improved stability at lower costs and higher precision.

This range is available in carbon and stainless The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention) will enter into force on 8 September 2017. With this Convention a landmark step is made towards halting the spread of invasive aquatic species, which can cause havoc for local ecosystems, affect biodiversity and lead to substantial economic loss. Ships will be required to manage their ballast water to remove, render harmless, or avoid the uptake or discharge of aquatic organisms and pathogens within ballast water and sediments. Accession by Finland has triggered the entry into force of this international measure for environmental protection. Expanded ship trade and traffic volume over the last few decades has increased the likelihood of invasive species being released due to ballast water.

Hundreds of invasions have already taken place, sometimes with devastating consequences for the local ecosystem. Under the new convention all ships will also have to carry a ballast water record book and an international ballast water management certificate. The ballast water management standards will be phased in over a period of time.

As an intermediate solution, ships should exchange ballast water midocean. However, eventually most ships will need to install an on-board ballast water treatment system.

news in brief Damen Starts Operating from Curaçao Recently the government of Curaçao and Damen Shipyards Group signed a concession agreement for the future operation of the current Curaçao Drydock Company. Damen will establish a new company on Curaçao under the name Damen Shiprepair Curaçao. Damen started its operations in the two graven docks and on the available quays end October 2016. Part of the agreement consists of Damen bringing in extra capacity in the shape of a floating dock. It has also been agreed that a total of 40 Million USD will be invested in the infrastructure and training facilities for personnel.

Cargotech Part of Ecosystem Autonomous Ships

Cargotec, together with maritime industry and ICT companies, will establish world’s first ecosystem aimed at creating autonomous marine transport system to the Baltic Sea by 2025. The initiative is largely financed by Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for innovation. In addition to Cargotec, the main investing companies are Ericsson, Meyer Turku, Rolls-Royce, Tieto and Wärtsilä.

The ecosystem platform is being handled by DIMECC, a co-creation ecosystem provider. Productivity developments will be driven by advancements in connectivity and digitalisation, along with new business models and capabilities.

New Dredge Training Programme in South Africa The inauguration of an IHC dredging simulator was held at Transnet’s Maritime School of Excellence in Durban, South Africa. The launch marked the start of a new dredge training programme to develop and enhance the knowledge and skills of local dredging personnel. Transnet has set out a long-term vision to develop South African dredging and manufacturing industries – raising levels of operational efficiency and improving the capabilities of those employed in these sectors.

The aim is to improve the local industry by setting up a dredging school, outsourcing parts to local suppliers and using the local supply chain for life-cycle support of the vessel.

news in brief Gibdock Delivers Clipper Service

Genting Dream Launched Meyer Werft recently handed over the new cruise ship Genting Dream (151,300GT) to the Asian cruise operator company Dream Cruises. Dream Cruises has a crew of around 1,700 and this cruise ship also carries two small deep sea submarines that can each take four people down to a depth of up to 200m. Environmentally friendly marine engines, diesel-electric pod drives, and improved hydrodynamics as well as numerous energy saving measures, heat recovery or ballast water cleaning all contribute to an ecological cruise experience and considerably reduced operating costs. The ship has also been built according to the latest safety regulations.

Gibdock redelivered the Seatruck Ferries container/ro-ro vessel Clipper Point on-time, after a fast turnaround renewal project for the Clipper Group-owned operator.

The ship has subsequently been introduced to Seatrucks’ Irish Sea operations. Designed by Knud E. Hansen, Clipper Point is one of four ‘P Series’ ro-ro freight ferries built for Clipper Group subsidiary Sea Trucks by Spanish shipyard Astilleros de Huelva whose dimensions were conceived as the maximum possible permissible for the UK port of Heysham. The three-deck ‘Heysham max’ ferries have capacity for 105 trailers (1,800 lane metres) and are classed 1A1 RoRo/Container vessels by DNVGL.

Autonomous Shipping in Norway An extensive area of the Trondheimsfjord in Northern Norway was designated as an official test bed for autonomous shipping by the Norwegian Coastal Authority (NCA). As potentially the first coastal area in the world officially dedicated to the development of technology for autonomous ships, the new test bed is set to become a vital facility for the future of shipping.

Announced as a follow-up to the Norwegian government’s new National Transport Plan, the fjord offshore Trondheim is an ideal location for the development of technology that will make autonomous shipping a reality.

offshorE wind/soV VEssEl windEa la cour has just rEcEntly EntErEd sErVicE at thE GEmini offshorE wind farm in thE north sEa. thE flExiblE VEssEl was dEsiGnEd and built by Ulstein and was delivered to BS Offshore in June 2016.

The hull form, with the Ulstein X-Bow and X-Stern and a Diesel Electric propulsion system, ensures exceptional performance in both calm seas and rough weather.

he X-Bow, the X-Stern and the integrated DC-based common main drive system allow variable rpm control of the diesel engines within the power and propulsion system. These are essential design features which increase operability through their positive effects on station-keeping, wave response, comfort and safety, and ensure reduced power and fuel consumption while on DP. In addition to the catalyst, they fulfil the highest international environmental requirement (IMO-Tier3).

The Ulstein X-Bow and the Ulstein X-Stern maintain the vesselâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s efficiency over a wide draught range from light ship to fully loaded. The vessel boasts excellent performance credentials with regard to fuel consumption, seakeeping, station-keeping, speed, stability and cargo capacity.

The X-Stern is a pointed aft, with the absence of a transom plate. Flexibility during operations is one of the major benefits of the X-Stern. Comfort is increased due to reduced vibration and slamming.

Flexibility and comfort are the key assets of the Windea La Cour, which accommodates, transports and transfers technicians between the shore and wind turbines in the Gemini wind farm off the coast of the Netherlands. The vessel can move swiftly between wind installations.

Meeting Demands

Under Construction BS Offshore has another SOV vessel, yno 310, under construction at Ulstein Verft. The Windea TBN will commence work for Siemens on two of the Vattenfall offshore wind farms off the coast of Germany, starting in 2017.

To meet their different preferences and operational requirements, manufacturers are broadening their range. T

he shipping industry is under mounting pressure to increase its sustainability, improve operational efficiency and reduce its impact on the environment. The International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 70) has agreed to develop a framework in which shipping’s GHG contribution can be brought into line with the target agreed by UNFCCC at COP21 in December last year of a limit on global warming of 2°C. At the same time, the IMO will also decide on whether to implement a key part of the MARPOL Annex VI regulation, which will require vessels to burn fuel oil with a sulphur limit of 0.5%, from either 2020 or 2025. This would fundamentally change the marine fuel supply chain and significantly impact the cost of operations. These challenges represent significant opportunities for manufacturers who can provide viable and clean technology, services and solutions that improve operational and environmental efficiency, and will increase the incentive to adopt them.

Increasing Eco-Efficiency Technology Uptake

Advanced hull coatings currently represent the most widely-used clean technology on the market. To encourage the most extensive adoption of eco-efficiency

technologies within the shipping industry, AkzoNobel’s Marine Coatings Business has launched Intersleek1000, part of their International range of coatings, a new biocide-free fouling-control coating which offers fuel and CO2 savings of up to 6%.

Based on patented Lanion technology, Intersleek1000 is a sustainable coating incorporating a bio-renewable raw material.

It provides vessels with an extremely smooth hull surface, reducing drag and lowering fuel consumption.

The long-term fouling-control performance of Intersleek1000 is equivalent to an ultra self-polishing copolymers (SPC) coating, but it delivers smoother films upon application, leading to lower hull roughness and improved overall vessel efficiency.

Eligibility for Carbon Credits

A further benefit is that Intersleek1000 is eligible for inclusion in AkzoNobel’s awardwinning carbon credits initiative. Developed in conjunction with the Gold Standard Foundation, this initiative rewards ship owners with ‘carbon credits’ based on the amount of CO2 emissions they manage to reduce by using more sustainable hull coatings. The carbon credits accrued can be traded in for cash or used for offsetting emissions in other parts of the participating organisation’s business.

Intersleek1000 has delivered proven inservice performance on Ro-Ro vessels, pure car carriers, container vessels and LNG ships. During five-year in-service trials, a Ro-Ro vessel coated with Intersleek1000 has already generated 1,500 carbon credits (equivalent to the removal of 1,500t of CO2 from the atmosphere) through a 6% fuel saving, independently validated and verified

by RINA and the Gold Standard Foundation.

In addition to producing performance predictions using Intertrac Vison, and as a tangible demonstration of AkzoNobel’s confidence in Intersleek1000, customers will be offered performance guarantees in their Performance Maintenance Agreements (PMA) for Intersleek1000. Changing Strategies Whereas todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s number of neWbuild orders is at a record loW in most cargo-vessel and offshore special-vessel segments, the passenger vessel market is booming. this kind of market change creates extreme challenges for those shipyards which have focused solely on standard types of vessels, or whose business has been purely based on offshore projects. many intend to upgrade their business towards higher added-value production.

Shipbuilding Challenges

there will be many unique challenges for a yard starting to build a new ship type, especially a passenger vessel. these challenges include such things as weight control, the specific rules and regulations relating to passenger vessels, noise & vibration, control of thin plate deformation, fabrication and installation of ro-ro equipment, fire & safety, sewage treatment, hvac and interior quality. as an example, the srtp rule requires a totally new way of thinking in the shipbuilding process. in case of ďŹ&#x201A;ooding, fire or other calamities, the essential systems, such as propulsion and steering, need to remain operational. additionally, to keep conditions habitable for the passengers on board, certain service and comfort systems have to remain operational. to meet the strict requirements of the srtp rule, the capacity, equipment routings and interior area arrangement of the vessels must be accurately designed and assessed. the most important issue to understand is that a prototype project requires the implementation of totally new project management processes rather than the ones typically used in standard shipbuilding. the biggest changes required are during the procurement process to enable enhanced, efficient decisionmaking right from the start of the project. i. www.deltamarin.com

Compensated Gangway

Together with the expanding wind energy industry, there is an increased need for safe crew transfer from vessels to wind turbines for o&m activities. This bumper is kept stationary by the active motion compensation during deployment as well as during connection. it pushes onto the landing platform to ensure contact during personnel transfer. in March of this yEar, hEaVy Lift spEciaLisEd jack-up bargE ZouritE was succEssfuLLy dELiVErEd to her owners. the 107m floating-unit was specifically built by polish shipyard crist for the construction of france’s longest (5.4km) offshore viaduct.

T

he six-lane highway will be built on the stretch of sea between st denis and the village of La grande chaloupe, replacing a coastal road that is subject to rock falls and flooding. Zourite is able to load, transport and install the 50 foundation units for the road construction, of which 48 will be placed on the seabed. the viaduct will be built by a consortium comprising Vinci construction grands projets, dodin campenon bernard, bouygues travaux publics and demathieu & bard.

Supporting Structure

Zourite has been partly produced at crist. a complicated supporting structure was built and installed on the main deck underneath the cranes, which meets all the special requirements in dimensional tolerances and far exceeds shipyard standards. according to the shipyard, the heavy lift jack up barge demonstrates both their technical and management capabilities. this unique project fits in well with their scope of interest and Zourite will certainly open up new possibilities when it comes to working with prominent international partners.

(at the designated offshore location) taking the load from the barge deck and transferring the load to its deployment position, lowering the load and retrieve the unloaded hooks. the key technical requirements for the gantry crane are the ability to lift, move and accurately place the concrete blocks in a tidal environment. of course there are also project and commercial considerations including the weight of the crane: speed of handling, vessel time/cost, and lifting systems costs and cost-of-ownership.

Enerpac selected a reeved winch system, based on eight grooved drum winches with 500kn pulling force on the outer layer. the drum capacity is 800m based on a 52mm wire. the selected winches feature a grooved drum in compliance with the ‘Lebus patent’ for optimum spooling. in addition, they opted for a trolley system offering some clear advantages. there is continuous movement of the block and the speed is variable, enabling high speed positioning once the crane is unloaded. Moreover, there are very limited maintenance costs compared with the skidding system.

The systems combine continuous jacking with an advanced damping system to improve the operability and operational conditions for positioning a jack up in high swells.

The trolley movement system comprises two trolleys per lifting beam, giving as total of four trolleys for the two beams. Each trolley comprises four wheels of which two are propelled with hydraulic drive motors and planetary gearboxes. The wheels run on two parallel rails bolted onto the runway beams of the barge. Enerpac is using a PLCbased control system to ensure accurate control and positioning of the hydraulic trolleys, eight synchronised winches with four crane hooks, and side shifting cylinders on the beams. Together the eight winches will provide a lifting capacity of 4,800t.

Without a load they will operate with a speed ranging from 0,0 cm/min up to 100 cm/min. When loaded the speed ranges from 0,0 cm/min up to 40 cm/min (lifting and lowering).

Enerpac is also developing a positioning system for the bridge pier concrete sections based on its experiences in placing bridges and offshore wind monopiles.

Continuous System

The Holland-based company Ravestein supplied the continuous leg systems, comprising a complete package including the jacking towers with all internal hydraulic components, HPUs and central command system. In addition, they supplied eight tubular, thick-walled legs. The systems are

suitable for jack ups operating in water depths up to 50m and are suitable, for example, for construction work, offshore wind turbine installation, maintenance vessels and accommodation units.

The new jacking system consist of two crossheads; each crosshead has three locking cylinders and six climbing cylinders.

he ALP Striker was constructed for ALP Maritime Services by Niigata Shipbuilding & Repair, Japan. She is the first of four ultra-long-distance towing and anchor-handling vessels for ALP Maritime Services, a subsidiary of Teekay Offshore Partners L.P.

Future Class

The vessel is a part of the ship ownerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ALP Future class, a series of stronger and larger towing vessels to match and enable an increase in the size of FPSOs, FLNGs and similar floating installations. These vessels are able to perform worldwide ocean towage over any distance, as well as the positioning and hook-up of floating installations to prelaid mooring systems. They are also able to carry out the anchoring of installations and

floating objects and perform disconnecting and mooring retrieval operations as part of repositioning or decommissioning operations.

The vessels are able to do this with minimal fuel bunkering stops, optimal fuel-efficiency, due to their four independentengine configuration, and high bollard pull. The Ulstein X-Bow design guarantees optimal course stability and sea-keeping in adverse weather and sea conditions.

Unique Design

The ALP Striker is based on the Ulstein SX 157 design. The vessels were developed especially for this project with close collaboration between ship designer Ulstein Design & Solutions AS and ship owner ALP Maritime Services.

Their service speed is 13 knots, while their top speed is 19 knots. With a fuel capacity of more than 3,500m3, they can tow at full power for 45 days, sufficient for non-stop Trans-Atlantic/Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean towing operations without fuel calls.

The vessels are 88.9m long and 21m wide.

When developing the design, Ulstein had to ensure that each vessel had the sufficient bollard pull and operational reliability to handle even the heaviest two-vessel tows.

The environment and fuel efficiency have also been important criteria. The vessels are classed with DNVâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Clean Design and Ice Class 1B notations, which also allow operation in restricted zones. Additionally, they are equipped as anchor handling vessels including stern roller, a threedrummed winch with 400t hoisting capacity and with chain lockers for rig chain. The ships have comfortable and spacious accommodation for 35 persons allowing for long periods at sea.

Subsea Industries’ Ecofix is a cost-effective solution for the repair of corroded or pitted steel surfaces.

Subsea Industries is a pioneer in the development of hard hull coating systems and hull and propeller cleaning systems. In 2002 they introduced Ecospeed as an environmentally safe underwater hull coating system, capable of improving ship performance, providing long-term fouling protection and reducing the impact of ship operations on the environment. In 2013, Ecoshield was launched for permanent protection against cavitation damage for rudders. This development was followed by the market launch of Ecolock – an extremely tough and durable coating designed for FPSOs, drill ships and other offshore vessels – and then, in 2016, by the introduction of Ecofix, a restoration filler for use in combination with Ecoshield.

Chris Dyson, a Senior Partner and Marine Engineer at Brookes Bell, provides guidance and examples of best practices in ships’ crane failure investigation.

W

hen a crane fails, many elements can combine to increase the impact of the incident. These elements not only include upfront damage costs, but also the impact of injury, or even death, as well as costs and time lost as a result of the crane being taken out of service while the incident is investigated and repairs are completed.

Other commercial implications can also result from crane failures, for example, when a crane is out of service, ship owners can incur additional costs because the cargo gear is no longer as described in the charter party and the ship cannot fully comply with its contractual specifications.

These elements, as well as other factors unique to each case, mean that even a crane failure that is initially perceived to be a small matter can, and often does, quickly escalate when the consequences of the incident are fully evaluated and assessed.

When a crane fails – most commonly during lifting operations – the affected ship owner, charterer and P&I Club carry out investigations into the cause. On many occasions, local surveyors will be asked to attend to collect evidence and draw conclusions regarding the cause of the incident.

The individuals in attendance may have the best intentions when collecting evidence and drawing their conclusions. However, due to the perceived low cost of crane failures, it is not uncommon for individuals to be appointed based on their locality to the impacted crane, or the affordability of their services, as opposed to their knowledge, experience and track record of investigating similar cases. As a result, it is

not unusual for simple, but fundamental, evidence to be overlooked during initial investigations, for example, exactly what was being lifted in terms of mass and rigging when the crane failed, where did the crane come to rest after the failure, where was the hoist load being lifted from and where was its destination?

In addition, from a technical perspective, an individual who does not deal with cranes on a regular basis may not be able to fully understand their design nor be able to identify all the fundamentals and the different forces that are imposed during a structural failure. In addition, many do not have access to naval architects, metallurgists, tribologists and other specialists who are able to analyse and provide expert opinion on aspects such as vessel stability, corrosion, operation, wear, and numerous other factors which can influence crane failure.

Forensic Evidence is Vital

The collection and scientific analysis of evidence related to each crane failure is vital in effectively managing disputes – for example, where the ship owner has accused the stevedores of causing crane failure due to mishandling, and the stevedores have accused the ship owner of poorly maintaining the crane, thereby causing its failure.

If a crane failure investigation is not carried out in a thorough and detailed manner at an early stage, this can result in the loss of evidence. When this occurs, the ship owner, stevedores and other parties involved in a dispute will lose the ability to settle the matter quickly and efficiently and in an informed manner. As a result, more time

and money often has to be spent in the long term to properly determine the cause of a crane failure.

Wire Failure

There are many issues that can cause cranes to fail, but the most prominent and common cause of incidents is wire failure. When this occurs, ideally a 5m sample length of wire should be retained from either side of the point of failure. This sample should be suitably stored and preserved before it is sent to a metallurgical laboratory where the individual wires in a rope can be easily and quickly categorised to determine the mode by which the wire failed. This will explain whether the wire was overloaded at the time of the incident or whether it failed by some other means, for example a preexisting defect, or deterioration giving rise to a lack of overall strength. This approach represents industry best practice; however, in reality, in many cases such standards are not met. For example, Brookes Bell have been involved with numerous crane cases where a wire rope has failed and a sample has not been retained. In other cases, ship owners have contended that the wrong section of the rope has been tested and

he cable installation vessel is engineered with the latest innovations in its category. It is equipped with two turntables below deck, each having a 5,000t cable capacity. Together, the turntables can carry and transport more than 200km of cable that can be installed in a single trip.

Ample deck space of 3,500m2 facilitates a revolutionary cable-handling system with innovative and reliable cable-handling tools for cable ends, connections and cable protection systems. Furthermore, the Living Stone can be equipped with a third carrousel above deck with an additional load capacity of 2,000t.

Below-deck also accommodates remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), the CBT 1100 subsea trenching tool, the fall-pipe system, a central moon pool of 7.7 by 7.7m and a 600t crane for subsea installation and removal.

The Living Stone features dp3 (dynamic positioning 3) capability, together with an important total loading capacity of 12,500t, and has been designed as an environmentally-friendly vessel with dual fuel engines, with Lng being its prime fuel.

The Living Stone has a green passport and the Clean design notation, awarded to owners and operators who choose to design and operate their vessels with an environmentally sustainable approach.

In order to operate the vessel with the lowest possible fuel consumption while also keeping CO2 and nOx and SOx exhaust emissions to the strictest minimum, Lng as fuel and biodegradable grease and oil will be used combined with heat recovery. The aim is to reduce the vessel’s emissions and waste so that the shipping industry’s overall environmental burden is reduced.

The Living Stone will join the fleet of fallpipe vessels of deme’s offshore division Tideway, which currently includes the Flintstone, Rollingstone and Seahorse.

he underwater elements of the propulsion unit are coated with several layers of extremely hard, two-component epoxy resin. Compared to conventional standard coatings, the abrasion resistance is 2 1/3 times greater with approximately 60% better adhesion capabilities. For the abovewater sections, Schottel uses a very dense and extremely durable two-component polyurethane coating.

Modern Process

In 2015, Schottel commenced operations at a new plant near the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s headquarters in Germany, where production is carried out in accordance with the latest mandatory standards. Thanks to an optimised air-mix painting process and ideal conditions for substrate preparation, the propulsion systems can be protected even better for practical operation.

BigOceanData and Maersk Line have entered into a two-year agreement.

BigOceanData will deliver vessel-tracking services to Maersk Line. The initial system went live on 1 August 2016 and is in use in operation centres around the world on both desktop and mobile devices.

BigOceanData is initially being used to track Maersk Line’s fleet, a total of approximately 630 owned and chartered vessels, using fused satellite and terrestrial data feeds to deliver a reliable service capable of providing consistent position reports. This information is used to optimise the performance of the fleet. The BigOceanData system also supplies a wide range of additional environmental, navigation and security data that can be integrated with clients’ in-house systems, reducing costs and increasing efficiencies. This service will allow a secure, two-way exchange of data between Maersk Line’s systems and the BigOceanData interface. i. www.bigoceandata.com

Wilhelmsen Ships Service (WSS) is countering the threat of vessel boiler failure with an innovative method that improves reliability and onshore insight into boiler water treatment – a digital, cloud-based, automated boiler water dosing solution. The device reduces the risk of boiler failure, removes the need for regular, often inaccurate testing by crew, and offers a connectivity that enables on- and offshore data sharing. WSS’s new digital solution works by taking constant readings for boiler water pH, conductivity, temperature and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), before dosing it with two separate chemicals, according to predetermined limits. This ensures the boiler water is always well maintained and fit for purpose. The WSS automated boiler water dosing solution has now been thoroughly tested and is being piloted aboard ten vessels for final refinements. PureBallast Passes Ten-Year Mark The announcement that Finland had ratified the IMO Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention came just days before another milestone: the ten-year anniversary of Alfa Laval PureBallast’s commercial launch. On 15 September 2016, Alfa Laval marked the passage of ten years since PureBallast was released as the world’s first commercially available ballast water treatment system.

At the time of the launch in 2006, the global introduction of ballast water treatment requirements had seemed imminent. Exactly one decade later that milestone has finally been passed. Now in its third generation, PureBallast offers great performance in fresh and brackish waters and is the ideal system for lowclarity water, operating at full flow where UV transmittance is as low as 42%. i. www.alfalaval.com

MAN Diesel & Turbo Milestones Just six years after its introduction, MAN Diesel & Turbo has confirmed an order for the 1,500th G-type engine.

Greek ship operator, Almi Tankers, will take delivery of the ultra-long-stroke 7G80ME-C9 type as prime movers for the two 317,000-dwt VLCC to be built by Hyundai Heavy Industries Group (HHI) in Korea. Coincidentally, Almi Tankers also placed the order for the very first Gtype engine. The crude carriers are due for delivery in, respectively, February and April, 2018. In both instances, the engine is Tier III-compatible. MAN & Diesel Turbo, Augsburg reports that it recently delivered the 10,000th turbocharger from its TCR radial-type turbocharger series. The MAN TCR14 unit was produced for a 5L23/30H GenSet for Oldendorff Carriers, one of the world’s largest dry-bulk shipping companies. The Jinling-built 38,000-dwt bulker is the second in a series of four vessels, all propelled with MAN two-stroke and auxiliary engines. i. www.dieselturbo.man.eu

The company’s MaK 16 M 46 DF dual fuel engines, along with the full LNG supply and handling system, are to be installed on four new ships, two apiece under construction at Meyer Werft’s Papenburg, Germany and Turku, Finland shipyards. Caterpillar Marine now offers all round LNG propulsion solutions – from shore-side bunkering to onboard storage; from bunker tanks via LNG handling and treatment to the dual fuel engines including automation systems; and ultimately the dual fuel main engines MaK 16 M 46 DF, in close cooperation with LNG and cryogenic specialist Marine Service. i. www.cat.com/marine

New Azipod Propulsion Model ABB has launched a new Azipod propulsion unit that is up to 10% more efficient than previous versions. The new linear flow Azipod XL achieves this jump in efficiency by introducing a nozzle with stator plates, which directs the water flow from the propeller to reduce the turbulence and energy loss and to give the optimum thrust for the vessel. The Azipod XL represents a great jump in the systems’ fuel efficiency in recent years. To put it in perspective, if the newest model replaced all existing Azipod units it would save the shipping industry 2.2 million tonnes of fuel, and 7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, over the next 25 years. It is a quarter of a century since the first installation of an Azipod unit, and in that time they have racked up more than 12 million running hours, saving 700,000t of fuel in the process. i. www.abb.com

Trials for Electronic Certificates System ClassNK has begun operational trials for the ClassNK e-Certificate, world’s first comprehensive system to provide ships’ class certificates and statutory certificates issued on behalf of flag states in electronic format. The use of electronic certificates is expected to bring about significant benefits for shipping companies by reducing the administrative burden of sending traditional paper certificates and managing them on board, in addition to making it easier to retrieve data on the certificates. The certificates in electronic format are developed in line with the updated Guidelines for the Use of Electronic Certificates (FAL.5/Circ.39/Rev.2) which was issued by the IMO in April. As well as enabling the transmission and receiving of electronic data offshore, ClassNK e-Certificate allows users to verify the authenticity of certificates online.

This will mark the first time a classification society has developed a system for the comprehensive provision of electronic class and statutory certificates. i. www.classnk.com
