Innovative solutions, ranging from alternative propulsion to ballast water treatment systems and high-tech coatings, are gaining more and more momentum. and what could be a better opportunity to present the latest technological advancements than europort 2017? as mr raymond Siliakus, europort’s exhibition manager, states, sustainable business could very well prove to be beneficial not just to the environment, but to the shipbuilding industry itself. “we pay attention to the classic notion of sustainability: how to lower co2 emissions, how to build cleaner ships,” he says. “but we also look at how sustainability can create a healthier business model. It’s the new environmental age, and if you adapt wisely, your business can profit as much as the environment.”

news in brief KL Sandefjord First Vessel with Shore Power Notation The offshore vessel KL Sandefjord, owned by K Line Offshore AS, a whollyowned subsidiary of Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd (‘K’ Line), is the first offshore vessel to have the DNV GL class notation ‘Shore Power’. The Shore Power notation verifies the design and installation of a vessel’s on-board electrical shore connection. When in port, the vessel can shut down its engines and rely on so-called ‘cold ironing’ – using a shore-based electrical supply for its needs at berth – and thus reduce its fuel consumption and eliminate associated emissions. The result is a marked improvement on the air quality in the port and surrounding environment, cutting PPM, NOx, SOx and reducing CO2. In addition, it keeps the engines free for maintenance, reduces wear and tear and limits noise.

3D Printed Ship’s Propeller Takes Step Closer to Completion

DAMeN ShIPYARD GROUP

A prototype has been produced of the world’s first classapproved ship propeller using 3D printing techniques. The 1,350mm-diameter propeller, called the WAAMpeller, is the product of a cooperative consortium of companies that includes Damen Shipyards Group, RAMLAB, Promarin, Autodesk and Bureau Veritas. The WAAMpeller was fabricated from a nickel-aluminiumbronze alloy at RAMLAB (Rotterdam Additive Manufacturing LAB) in the Port of Rotterdam. Built up layer-by-layer, 3D-printed materials display different physical properties in different directions, whereas steel or cast materials have the same properties in all directions. This critical difference meant extensive testing to ensure compliance with Bureau Veritas standards. The 400kg WAAMpeller sets a milestone in terms of 3D printing production techniques, translating a complex, double-curved, geometric shape from a 3D CAD file on a computer into a physical product.

NEWS IN BRIEF

SBI

NEWS IN BRIEF Schottel Pump Jets for Energy-Efficient MS Renate Propulsion specialist Schottel has secured a contract for the delivery of three Pump Jets for the diesel-electric passenger vessel MS Renate. The energy-efficient vessel, with space for almost 500 passengers, will be powered by two Schottel Pump Jets (SPJ). The bow thruster can be used either for flexible manoeuvring in narrow channels or as an additional propulsion unit. The azimuthing Pump Jet is installed flush with the bottom of the vessel and provides full thrust in all directions, offering maximum manoeuvrability even at higher speeds of up to 12 knots. For inland shipping, the compact SPJ gives reliable service in areas where conventional propeller drives cannot be used due to restricted draught. Because of the flush installation in the hull, the special-purpose propulsion unit can operate in extremely shallow waters. Wärtsilä Launches New Eco-Friendly Tug Designs The technology group Wärtsilä is introducing a new portfolio of tug designs, to be known as the Wärtsilä HYTug series, with the emphasis on environmental sustainability. Since they typically operate in and around harbours and populated areas, tugs are particularly affected by environmental considerations, and the need for regulatory compliance is an increasing concern for tug owners and operators worldwide. The recently introduced Wärtsilä HY hybrid propulsion solution forms the basis of the new designs, the benefits of which include the flexibility and efficiency provided by the technology. Notably, the enhanced efficiency enables the total installed main engine power to be less than with conventional designs. Using less engine power also decreases exhaust emission levels and, therefore, the environmental impact. It also reduces fuel costs and the amount of engine maintenance needed, which again keeps costs lower.

EUROPORT 2017

EUROPORT 2017 IN ANTICIPATION OF ONE OF EUROPE’S BIGGEST MARITIME EXHIBITIONS, EUROPORT’S EXHIBITION MANAGER, RAYMOND SILIAKUS, GIVES US A HEADS-UP. THIS YEAR’S JAM-PACKED PROGRAMME RANGES FROM MASTERCLASSES to matchmaking events, from debates and seminars to award ceremonies. It also premiers several new features and events. With so much going on and Europort approaching rapidly, Mr Siliakus takes us through some of the highlights the 38th edition of the exhibition has in store. uroport has achieved a prominent position on the world stage. Companies from all over the world make sure they are represented at the exhibition,” Mr Siliakus says. “I think Europort’s international success has to do with the important position that we, the Dutch, have when it comes to maritime technology. Wherever I go on the globe, for exhibitions, seminars or conferences, there are always other Dutch professionals. It’s fantastic that Europort endorses that position. Over 40% of the companies at Europort are foreign. Combined with a good local maritime cluster, it’s a perfect mix.”

Maximising Vessel Performance

The central theme at Europort 2017 is Maximising Vessel Performance. “Ships continue to become smarter, cleaner and safer,” says Mr Siliakus. “But they are also becoming more efficient. Cost-efficient, fuelefficient.” Within the main theme, three selected subjects form a central thread through the entire Europort 2017 programme.

There are 1100 companies at Europort and approximately 30,000 visitors.

at Europort. But while the development of environmentally friendly technology is often driven by international regulations, the quest for sustainability can be used as a strategic competitive advantage. “We pay attention to the more classic notion of sustainability: how to lower CO2 emissions, how to build cleaner ships,” says Mr Siliakus. “But we also look at how sustainability can create a healthier business model. It’s the new environmental age, and if you adapt wisely, your business can profit as much as the environment does.” n Big Data Europort will provide a showcase for smart ships: new generation IT and system integration tools, ultra-sensitive monitoring, condition-based maintenance, fleet performance management and the other types of data analysis needed to help owners and operators achieve better cost efficiency and lower the overall cost of ownership. “Europort focuses on technological innovations, and big data is a game changer,” Mr Siliakus says. “It’s everywhere. The topic of big data returns in many facets of Europort: the masterclasses, seminars etc.”

Within the main theme, three selected subjects form a central thread through the entire Europort 2017 programme.

n The Human Factor Mr Siliakus continues, “With the rapid developments in automation, such as those concerning big data for instance, the role played by people can become a moot point. In shipping, for example, the level of human skill and motivation can make a big difference when it comes to quality or commitment. Human efforts enable ships and shipyards to innovate and operate in increasingly tough market conditions, charting a path to new business.” Europort will lead a timely discussion on the importance of human capital, stressing the need to attract young talent and invest in the expertise of personnel to strengthen operational competence, boost productivity and be sufficiently equipped to meet future demands. Friday at Europort sees a lot of activities around the theme ‘Human Capital’, including a seminar by YoungShip (the international network organisation for young professionals in the maritime industry), a masterclass and various student programmes.

EUROPORT 2017

A busy exhibition hall at Europort 2015.

Ahoy Connect App

After being a great success on the last edition, the Ahoy Connect App is available again for visitors and exhibitors of Europort 2017. “It’s basically Tinder, but for the maritime industry at Europort,” says Mr Siliakus. “You can like people and their companies and return likes, in order to set up concrete meetings in advance of the Europort events. There are 1100 companies at Europort, and approximately 30.000 visitors. For us as hosts, it’s very important to ensure that the right matches are made, that the right people actually get acquainted and have the possibility to network and do business.”

Routing and Pavilions

The routing at Europort is similar to the previous editions. The hall configuration is slightly altered after a substantial renovation, resulting in greater transparency in halls 2-6.

www.s h i p b u i l d i n g -industr y.eu

Europort Interview.indd 13

Besides that, there are some changes in the pavilions. “The big names are all still there: Spain, Italy, France, the UK, Finland, Poland and Romania. China and Korea are both there with bigger pavilions, Singapore has returned after a few years of absence,” says Mr Siliakus. “Bulgaria is an interesting new pavilion,” he adds. “There’s a lot happening there. Another one to watch is Iran. They’ve exchanged the introduction stand they had at the last edition for a full pavilion this year.” Mr Siliakus emphasises the potential in maritime business with Iran, saying it’s particularly interesting for the European supply industry. “Since sanctions were lifted nearly two years ago, Iran is able and willing to expand on all fronts: offshore, shipbuilding, fleet expansion, etc. It is indeed a great opportunity.”

It’s basically Tinder, but for the maritime industry at Europort.

EUROPORT 2017

The Amver Awards Programme was initiated in 1971 to reward shipping companies who commit themselves to rescue at sea. The award ceremony has been held every year since. Presented by the US Coastguard, the Amver Awards are being hosted by Europort for the first time. Another new feature of this year’s event is the Shipowner’s Lounge. Shipowners have always been present at Europort, but the programme has never contained a section aimed particularly at promoting connections between shipowners and suppliers. This year, Europort introduces the Shipowner’s Lounge, with a special programme including speed-dating events, etc. Furthermore, we’re introducing the Startup-Plaza; a platform for the next generation. Drie-D

Fender Innovations

Specialised in bearing and friction technology, Drie-D has been delivering innovative products for a wide variety of markets for two decades. Drie-D’s unique D-glide® bearing material and certified friction materials allow the products to operate in demanding marine circumstances, often without lubrication or maintenance. New concepts for a bridge bearing are equally applicable to a cutter ladder or a stinger. Lessons learned in Formula 1 are useful in pile driving. Friction material from a winch brake can also be used to mount a bearing when welding or bolts are not an option. As good as Drie-D slide bearings and friction material may be, they are not all Drie-D has to offer. At Europort, Drie-D will present their best asset: the expertise and experience to design and deliver a bearing or friction solution that exceeds your expectations.

Fender Innovations presents its latest innovation in fender technology, the ‘BULL Technology Inside’ system. This technique combines the enormous resilience and indestructibility of hollow, pressureless Polymer spheres with the damping ability of high quality Polyethylene closed cell foam. This combination ensures that the load and the damping capacity and the technical lifetime of their fender systems increases dramatically while their weight reduces by over 20%.

The renewed Gigetta pump Photo courtesy of Gianneschi

Gianneschi Releases Renewed Gigetta Pump Gianneschi has launched a completely renewed version of their Gigetta pump, further increasing performance and range. The two-stage Gigetta pump has a dual impeller system, ensuring centrifugal impeller characteristics such as high dynamic fluid efficiency. A special helical impeller profile has been designed for quick priming (100mm diameter x 100m pipe length in less than 2 minutes). This way, the complex system of external priming systems (such as ejectors or vacuum pumps) can be avoided, reducing installation and maintenance costs. A double oil bath seal gives maximum strength and liability during start up functions. All components, fabricated with a notable level of precision, are made in high-quality bronze and stainless steel, ensuring the greatest resistance to corrosion. Gianneschi Pumps and Blowers have also recently introduced products and solutions suitable for other areas, such as treatment systems (BMA-M, BMA-G, MV), circulation and cooling specialisations and air conditioning (CB22). The BMA-M is a self-priming EL/pump with an open centrifugal impeller combined with a cutting unit, while the BMA-G is equipped with an anti-clogging system. The CB22, a centrifugal EL/pump with an open impeller, is designed for quiet operation with a low power consumption and has a mechanical seal protection system. www.gianneschi.net

oday, it looks as if the dutch maritime industry is recovering from the worldwide crisis, but the situation varies greatly per subsector. Mr de graaf: “global newbuild ordering is still at a very low level compared to earlier years, and our members are feeling the pressure. Nevertheless, most of our members are managing to hold their own by being flexible and gaining orders from a multitude of market segments.” especially the superyacht, dredging-vessel and fishing-boat markets are back on an even keel and, needing innovative and complex solutions, these are typically the sectors in which the dutch have always had a large market share. Most markets for cargo-carrying vessels are still suffering from overcapacity, according to Mr de graaf.

Dutch Expertise

“although the margins are still very small, the Netherlands can still compete with the rest of the world. we have seen many reorganisations in our industry, but today we even notice that the industry is recruiting again and one of the challenges we are facing now is how to attract highly educated people as the dutch industry as a whole is in need of professional technicians.” for years now, the dutch maritime industry has been specialising in innovative and knowledge-intensive projects. “Most newbuild projects are oneoffs, and these projects require a lot of high-

tech engineering,” Mr de graaf explains. “for this, the companies rely to a greater extent on dutch expertise.” The reverse side of this is that the image of the dutch industry is suffering. Mr de graaf: “even in the Netherlands, our sector has the image of being expensive, which is actually not the case in many instances. potential customers regularly decide to look abroad, without giving the dutch sector a fair chance to compete in the bidding. in order to foster innovation and ensure continued competitiveness, we have joined forces with the Ministry of defence and the industry to promote the construction of future naval vessels in the Netherlands.”

Plans for the Future

“with regard to our dutch members, it is our role to keep them up-to-date with new trends and developments,” Mr de graaf continues. “first of all, we share the information we have collected through researching the markets. The overwhelming majority of our members are sMe’s who find our services most helpful. with the research we conduct, or participate in, we aim to help our members to make their plans for the (near) future. To give an example, we were involved in the so-called

Level Playing Field

Throughout the years, NMT has played an important role in promoting the maritime industry. Mr de graaf says, “we represent a strong, innovative and internationally competitive network of dutch shipyards, maritime suppliers and maritime service providers. for this, we put a lot of effort into representing and promoting the industry with the dutch government, the eu in brussels and iMo in london. one of our roles, apart from lobbying, is to take part in various platforms. in doing so we can make the voice of the dutch maritime industry heard, in order to keep rules and regulations competitive, resulting in a level playing field for the dutch industry.” Photo courtesy of NMT

Well-Attended Events

The events NMT organises are always wellattended, proving that members of the association value this kind of networking, as they are able to meet colleagues from other companies and organisations. The holland pavilion at europort is a perfect example of the service NMT offers towards their members through participating in exhibitions. “with our holland pavilion, we offer companies an affordable way to exhibit, and we show the world what the dutch Maritime cluster is capable of,” Mr de graaf states.

Master Classes

Together with ahoy rotterdam, NMT has been organising master classes during europort for many years now. “with this year’s master classes, we are aiming at building bridges between long-term innovations and everyday business. a lot is

SHIP REPORT

L’ AstroLAbe

Versitale Polar Logistics Vessel Piriou recently celebrated the launch of their new Polar logistics and Patrol icebreaker l’ astrolabe in concarneau, france. the icebreaker’s new homePort is on the island of la reunion.

L

’ Astrolabe is a 72m logistics and patrol vessel, classified icebreaker 5, designed to sail in up to 60 - 80cm ice continuously. It can accommodate a maximum of 60 persons on board and carry up to 1,400t of freight. Without additional food or fuel supplies, L’Astrolabe can sail for 35 days continuously with an average speed of twelve knots, making her especially suitable for scientific missions in the Antarctic waters. Her helideck, 35t crane and aft gantry make this versatile vessel equally suitable for naval endeavours. L’ Astrolabe is equipped with a bio-UV bio-sea90 ballast water treatment system.

Construction the Ministry of overseas France hired Piriou for the construction of the new polar logistics vessel in June 2015. Piriou contracted Marine Assistance naval architects to design the new icebreaker and teamed up with Finnish engineering company Aker Arctic for its development. the list of parties involved doesn’t end there, however. L’ Astrolabe is owned by the French southern and Antarctic Lands (tAAF) and will be used for operations by both the French Polar Institute Paul-emile Victor (IPeV) and the French Navy. L’ Astrolabe will be registered as a ‘polar patrol vessel’ of the naval forces and replace two ships at once: a logistics vessel by the same name (L’ Astrolabe, 1984-2017), which carried supplies to the French Antarctic base in Adélie Land, and the patrol vessel Albatros (1967-2015), which undertook sovereignty

and patrol missions in the southern oceans. The President of the Piriou Group, Pascal Piriou, says the construction of L’Astrolabe was a great opportunity for his team to demonstrate their capacity to adapt to new markets. “With our partnership with specialists in the sector, we are now delivering a hybrid vessel, a crossbreed between an icebreaker and an oceangoing patrol vessel. Versatile and custom-made, it is an answer to various supply and sovereignty missions; a challenge we were able to meet in the very short period of 24 months,” he says.

As can be expected, L’Astrolabe will be deployed for various objectives. During the austral summer (120 days a year, from October to March), the ship will supply and support scientific bases in the Antarctic region for the IPEV. During the rest of the year, L’Astrolabe will facilitate sovereignty missions led by the French Navy, in particular in the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) of the French Overseas Territories. L’Astrolabe will carry out her first resupply mission to the Dumont D’Urville Station in Adélie Land in Antarctica in 2018. i. www.piriou.com

The IPEV The IPEV provides the human, logistical, technical and financial resources as well as the necessary legal framework to facilitate French scientific research in the polar and subpolar regions. These regions’ isolation and extreme climates make it imperative for operators to have highly specific technical knowledge and skills. The IPEV brings together specialist professionals in polar logistics, using its knowledge of harsh environments and a special range of skills to coordinate, support and run 60 to 80 scientific and technologic programmes annually in the higher latitudes of the globe, both North and South. With its know-how and the scientific platforms deployed, IPEV is helping to shed light on the vital importance of the poles.

With a long hiStory of teChnologiCal inventionS to keep their lanD high anD dry, it is only logical that the Netherlands is a big player in the world of dredging, with some of the biggest dredging contractors and fleets emanating from either the netherlands or (neighbouring) belgium. words by yara rooD

C

EDA Dredging Days is held biannually, in conjunction with europort. it has been the primary international dredging conference in the CeDa region (europe, middle east and africa) for many years. at the last edition in 2015, 55% of visitors were from the netherlands, while the other 45% represented 18 different countries. it is widely considered to be an invaluable forum allowing leading researchers and industry experts to discuss and share dredging challenges, solutions and experiences. professor Cees van rhee of Delft university of technology, member of the CeDa board of Directors and Chair of the technical papers Committee of CeDa Dredging Days 2017, gives us his take on the event itself and the latest innovations in the world of dredging.

In the aftermath of the financial crisis, what can you say about the current state of affairs in the dredging industry? professor van rhee: “When you look at dredging through the years, you see that from the 1980s up to as recently as 2010, most of the big projects were land reclamation projects in such places as hong kong, Singapore and later, of course, Dubai. the focus was on moving large quantities of sand. Shipyards built increasingly larger trailing suction hopper dredgers (tShD’s). When the crisis hit, that market saw a large

downturn and there weren’t a lot of funds available for big projects. there were some harbour expansion projects, particularly for lng, but they also slowed down over time. as is the case with all bigger construction industries, offshore and shipbuilding alike, the dredging industry also moves anticyclical to a crisis, meaning that there is a delay in the effect of a sudden change in the market. With the oil and gas industry slowing down, it’s hard to say where this will leave dredging. right now, the focus for dredging contractors is on the side of sustainability: infrastructural projects, the offshore wind sector and the refitting and equipping of cutter suction dredgers.” What innovations are currently making waves in the dredging industry? professor van rhee: “the entire maritime industry is looking for innovations in fuel, either by using more efficient machinery or by turning to alternative fuels and hybrid solutions. reducing Co2 emissions is not just beneficial to the environment; dredging is rather fuel-intensive, so cutting fuel usage means cutting costs. it’s important to calculate risks as precisely as possible. lng is on the rise, but hybrids are an interesting possibility as well. right now, a large number of batteries are required and their price is very high. When electricity gains more terrain in the car industry, the

maritime sector will undoubtedly follow. another innovation is to be found in the dredging techniques on harder surface materials. in order to comply with stricter environmental laws, powerful cutter dredgers are being built to excavate harder rock without the need for blasting. Dredging hard surface materials obviously requires a high fuel usage, but is still fundamentally more environmentally friendly than drilling and blasting.”

Can you explain the role CEDA plays in the dredging industry? What is the main goal of the organisation? professor van rhee: “CeDa is an independent organisation that connects everyone involved in the dredging industry: project owners such as ports and governments, contractors, builders and consultants. by supplying objective information, they attempt to promote a methodology for sustainable development. let’s say your new project is the expansion of a harbour. CeDa can help you to develop your plan to optimally fit with the surroundings, to include a nature reserve or recreational area, for example. the product you create needs to be sustainable, as does

the equipment you use. you also need to exercise damage control during operations. removing bottom sediments doesn’t necessarily have harmful consequences, but when you bring in large quantities of sand or silt, this can cause problems for the surroundings. the negative effect that sediment in the water column can have on specific organisms, and how that in turn can cause harm to other parts of the aquatic ecosystem, is a subject that CeDa is very concerned with. CeDa can help bring together and distribute the latest findings through papers, books, conferences and other events.”

CEDA Dredging Days What is the importance of the Dredging Days for CEDA? professor van rhee: “Dredging Days is CeDa’s trademark event, contributing significantly to CeDa’s international recognition. it is the biggest dredging conference in and around Europe, where every type of organisation involved in dredging can network, share their latest insights or innovations and motivate young professionals to take up a career in dredging.”

The main theme of the CEDA Dredging Days is ‘Sustainable Dredging – Continued Benefits’. Would you care to elaborate? Professor van Rhee: “Sustainable dredging, with regard to both dredging activities and the resulting projects, is what it’s all about right now. There are new solutions that predict and measure sediment release as a result of dredging, for example. Dredging needs to meet strict regulations. The measured amount of suspended solids can never be above certain levels. In dredging operations, the time of day can make a big difference, as the possible damage depends on the tide. There are some great examples of sustainable dredging projects where dredged sediment is used beneficially; where they are building in collaboration with nature. In the Netherlands, the Marker Wadden mudflats were recently completed. The Markermeer (Lake of Marken) has a lot of suspended solids (mud, silt) in the water column. By collecting these fine materials and turning them into islands, the water gains clarity and, simultaneously, new nature reserves are created. In Indonesia a similar project is being executed, where they want to repair the coastal erosion to

help mangroves recover and also use fine particles for construction. The latest developments in dredging technology that facilitate sustainable dredging are in the aforementioned energy saving solutions and use of alternative energy as well as in more efficient pumps, drag heads and in process control.” Throughout the CEDA Dredging Days, a lot of attention is given to young professionals. Why do they deserve that focus? Professor van Rhee: “In every branch of business, it’s important to attract the people that are best equipped and most suited for the job. Dredging involves an interesting mix of specialisations: robotics, automisation, mechanical and civil engineering, maritime technology and environmental sciences. You need to make sure that the next generation knows that your business is interesting enough. The dredging industry has always managed to accomplish this, and we continue to do so by drawing attention to the various career possibilities in dredging. Young CEDA hosts the fast-paced Pitch Talks: short, sharp presentations through which young professionals and university students get a chance to discuss their current

Without large accommodation platforms, one solution for housing personnel on windfarms is to create suitable accommodation on the supply vessels. platform supply vessels (pSvs) have been refitted or rebuilt to better suit these needs, but Bibby marine Services wanted something new altogether – a purposebuilt, walk-to-work service operations vessel (Sov). Damen Shipyards group were happy to comply and, with the construction of Bibby Wavemaster 1, built exactly what was required. Bibby Wavemaster 1 was

Bibby Wavemaster 1 can stay at sea for a number of weeks without returning to port, while the offshore crew can carry out their work for a higher percentage of the time and in heavier seas. The design of Bibby Wavemaster 1 keeps vertical accelerations and noise levels to an absolute minimum. as the technicians who maintain the wind turbines are not generally maritime people, the level of comfort they experience can have direct implications on their productivity. Since the effect of rolling is lowest amidships, that is where the cabins are located, with a resulting increase in comfort. Bibby Wavemaster 1 can host 90 personnel in ensuite comfort class 2-type accommodation, with 30 single and 30 double cabins.

The workflow is designed to minimise manual handling and is divided into clean and dirty zones. another feature is the heavecompensated offshore-rated knuckle boom crane with a safe working load of 5t. Bibby Wavemaster 1 will require less installed power than a conventional pSv, as it uses a diesel-electric main propulsion system, spread over a four-split main switchboard. complex calculations, based on typical north Sea weather and wave conditions, were used to find the ideal dimensions for the ship to minimise rolling and vertical acceleration. at 90m, the hull is longer than that of a conventional pSv, with a relatively wide beam (20m) and shallow draught (4m). The bow section has been lowered by 1.5m to create a v-shape. These features offer significantly reduced slamming and facilitate inclusion and an improved offshore operation of the bow thrusters. SHIP REPORT when sailing backwards, Bibby WaveMaster 1 can manage a speed of 11 knots without slamming. In calmer weather conditions, Bibby WaveMaster 1’s daughter craft, an 11m Tuco windfarm service boat, can be deployed by 2 crew members to deliver up to 8 client technicians and 1t of goods onto a turbine.

Modelling Operability The original design for the SOV had already been drawn up by Damen, who were just waiting for a company that dared to take on the innovative project. Bibby Marine Services expressed an interest and also brought some fresh ideas to the table. The two companies found themselves to be like-minded when it came to the design and construction process. An important development was the successful combination of the vessel’s design with Kongsberg’s DP2 system. A hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulator, developed by Damen, was used to create a complete digital twin of the ship. Kongsberg specialists demonstrated the model of the ship at MARIN Institute, with simulation tests combining all on-board parameters, including the motion-compensated gangway and DP2 system, with metocean data such

Q&A with Mr Stephen Blaikie, Chief Executive Officer at Bibby Marine Services Ltd Q: Why did you decide on Damen? A: Damen could deliver 3 things at once: Design, construction and warranty. We didn’t have to go past seven different shipyards to see who does what best or cheapest, who does exactly what you want and not just half of it. And then later, when something goes wrong, have everyone blame everyone else because there are so many parties involved. Damen is not the cheapest, but there’s the old saying: the quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten. We also chose Damen because we felt that the relationship was there. The two companies have a lot in common in terms of values. We try to anticipate the needs of the market and stay one step ahead of the competition. By using that guiding philosophy, we have built up a substantial business over the last 200 years. Q: What made you opt for a completely new design, rather than adapt an existing one? A: Blaikie: If you look at the size of the market right now, there’s a demand for around 25 of these types of ships. And yet www.s h i p b u i l d i n g -industr y.eu

Bibby Wavemaster.indd 45

there are only 10 or 11 out there. Some are platform supply vessels or other ships that have been refitted or transformed. Altering an existing design has many limitations. Bibby WaveMaster 1 was designed specifically to meet all the needs of this type of vessel, not just some of them. We believe that this design will change the market. The introduction of the stepless, slopeless design is a big factor. The fact that the lift can come up to the gangway on several levels wasn’t in the original design. We altered the design after signing the contract, because we felt it was what was required. We focused on performance, safety, accessibility and comfort. And it paid off. According to the tests in the HIL simulator, Bibby WaveMaster 1 can get a person onto a turbine over 85% of the time. They are simulations, of course, so the real test is happening out there right now. But we are very convinced of the Bibby Wavemaster 1’s capabilities. We say: “we can warranty access in certain circumstances.” That’s bankable.

Q: After the recent crisis, what is your view on the future of the offshore energy industry? A: The O&M phase of many windfarms has only just started. That aspect of the offshore market is fairly certain. The Paris Climate Agreement was the first time that United Nations leaders signed a declaration to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. The future will see demand for fossil fuels falling and renewable energy having a more important part to play. This will be an interesting transition. Not an easy one, but an interesting one. Mr Stephen Blaikie, CEO at Bibby Marine Services.

as waves, wind and currents based on central and southern North Sea conditions. With this unique tool, Bibby Marine Services could gain a real understanding of what is possible. In the offshore industry, seakeeping capabilities and the stability of the vessel in severe sea states are of paramount importance. Productivity is linked directly to accessibility: work only gets done if you are able to transfer personnel onto a turbine. It is therefore vital to be able to maintain access in unfavourable sea conditions. According to the HIL simulator, the SOV can achieve over an 85% degree of accessibility for the windfarms analysed. Bibby WaveMaster 1’s results from the Deep Water Towing Tank at MARIN were excellent. When faced with 2.5m waves approaching from the side, the amount of roll was negligible. For the safe transfer of technicians, the industry benchmark is a 2.5m wave height. According to the MARIN test results, the Bibby WaveMaster 1 should be able to go up to 3m plus. Considering future growth in O&M operations, this is an exciting prospect.

One Step Ahead Bibby and Damen are not alone in their high expectations. After a few weeks of sea trials, Bibby WaveMaster 1 will head off to the Galloper Wind Farm, 30km off the coast of Suffolk. Innogy will be chartering the ship from September until December, as they have faith in Bibby WaveMaster 1’s capability to continue their construction activities in bad weather. After that, Total Oil will be chartering the ship for three consecutive years, to replace their helicopter and jack-up accommodation approach. Seeing a company prepare for the future shows its confidence in the market. Likewise, a good way to judge the offshore wind sector is to look at the level of investment and innovation taking place. As for Bibby and Damen, their ambitions don’t end here. The plans for Bibby WaveMaster 2 and 3 are already on the table. In fact, Damen has already built the second framework on speculation.

A Century of Innovation Ulstein has spent the last 100 years looking to the fUtUre. ever since its formation on 9 aUgUst 1917 in Ulsteinvik, norway, the family-owned shipbUilder, designer and systems sUpplier has focUsed on tomorrow’s opportUnities today.

newbuild, the car ferry torulf, and by 1965 they had extended their reach into the maritime supply chain with the formation of Ulstein propeller. the business was now intent on emerging as a ‘package’ supplier, providing both advanced vessels and equipment.

Building Expertise

The Power of Understanding

martin Ulstein and andreas flø initially opened their small mechanical workshop in 1917 to repair and reconstruct wooden fishing vessels. Ulstein mek. verksted, as it was called back then, rapidly grew in its workforce, competence and influence. the firm became martin’s lifelong passion, while andreas moved on to other endeavours. by 1924, the business was representing and installing rapp engines, which led to the provision of full wheelhouses and exhaust systems. in 1957, Ulstein made its mark as a modern shipbuilder with its first steel

the discovery of oil in norway in 1969 switched Ulstein into overdrive. idar Ulstein, former ceo, chairman of the board and son of founder martin, explains that the discovery of the oil reserves led to a burgeoning demand for offshore vessels. “we received regular enquiries concerning the construction of supply vessels of american design,” he recalls, “but we believed that these vessels would not be particularly suitable for the prevailing weather conditions in the north sea”. Ulstein, having an intimate understanding of

this harsh environment, started developing new types of vessels in-house. offshore vessels in the Ut700 series had broader hulls and higher freeboards, allowing them to operate safely in rough seas. the Ut series were marketed worldwide, selling designs to international shipyards and, by doing so, establishing an industry network and financial base that facilitated rapid growth and recognition. Ulstein was no longer a name associated with a small norwegian settlement; it was now a global brand in specialist ships for the most demanding operational environments.

The Road to Revolution

another example of idar Ulstein’s ability to adapt and innovate is the development of the vros. always on the lookout for inspiration, mr Ulstein’s eye was caught by the retractable nose-wheel on an aircraft he was boarding. Upon his return to Ulstein, he asked his engineers to construct a rotating, retractable thruster. he named it vros, an abbreviation of two norwegian words meaning rotating and retractable. this development took shape just as Ulstein was setting out to build the stad Ulstein for the farstad shipping company. this vessel was to be equipped with two new thruster prototypes, one of which was a vros, which was designed simultaneously with the construction of the ship. right from its initial tests, the vros was a success, and few structural changes have been made since. the 80s and 90s saw Ulstein expanding further, by acquiring other firms – such as deck machinery and engine producer bergens mekaniske verksted (bmv)

in 1985 – before divesting 90% of the business, first to vickers, then to rolls-royce in 1999. this allowed the company to refocus on a core strength: providing innovative vessels and systems tailored to customers in demanding segments. initially, offshore was the key.

X Marks the Spot

in 2002, multifunctional anchor handling vessel olympic hercules was delivered, the first of a new generation of advanced Ulstein designs. 2005 however saw another Ulstein design create bigger waves in the offshore business: the release of the X-bow. first seen on the ahts ‘bourbon orca’ in 2006, the X–bow hull design reduces pitch motion and therefore increases comfort in rough weather– minimising movement caused by waves and bow impact. the unconventional shape of the hull reduces power consumption by 7% - 8% compared to vessels with traditional hull lines. by 2015, over 100 X–bow designs had been sold around the world, showcasing how even the boldest ideas can make their way into the mainstream when proven to be effective.

inspired by this success and driven by the desire for continuous improvement, Ulstein has now created X-stern. this concept transfers the benefits of the X–bow to the aft of the ship. it marks a full-circle evolution of the X hull design and is particularly suited, although not limited, to the burgeoning offshore wind sector. the first X-stern delivery was made on 23 June 2016 with the setting sail of the sov windea la cour. Photo courtesy of Ulstein

Unlocking opportunity

as for the future, Ulstein aims to emulate its position in the vanguard of ship design with developments in vessel technology. the digital revolution has transformed life on land and is sweeping over the seas, with increased system technology, management systems and automation paving the way for a truly connected shipping industry. Ulstein has recently been developing X-connect architecture, aimed at functioning as a platform for on-board products such as Ulstein ias and Ulstein pms, connected to digital and autonomous systems. X-connect intends to unite current and future systems on a single platform and

give onshore and offshore teams the data they need to enhance operations, environmental performance, business efficiency and stakeholder value. the concept connects systems, data and people, but also, as noted by group ceo gunvor Ulstein and chairman of the board tore Ulstein, it validates Ulstein’s intention to remain as relevant to the industry in the decades to come as it was in the past. “the future market is as difficult to predict in 2017 as it was in 1917,” the two say, looking

back at a century of Ulstein. “the only constant through the years is change, and we expect that change, driven by continual digital development, to accelerate in the future. we have come a long way from that small workshop in Ulsteinvik,” they conclude, “but our focus now is on where we are going. and where, with the right blend of experience and industry insight, we can take our customers in the future.” i. www.ulstein.com

MAKING WAVES IN THE MARITIME MARKET International sanctions have held back Iran’s investment plans and ideals for a long time. Since they were lifted nearly two years ago, Iran has been transforming into the booming market place that economists had long been predicting. The country once again has access to funds that were previously frozen in foreign accounts and is actively attracting international business. The IMF expects the general economic growth in Iran to culminate between 4% and 5.5% towards the end of 2017. A Maritime Nation A country that borders the Caspian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf is a maritime nation by definition. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that many of the largest investments in the last two years have been in this field. The Persian Gulf is of particular interest, since Iran has the largest coastline along these strategic waters and an important part of the Iranian Maritime Industry is located there. Iran sits on both the third largest oil field in the world as well as the second largest in natural gas. The international demand for natural resources creates a

huge export market for the country. On the other hand, the demand for luxury items by its 81 million inhabitants accelerates the import market, making both tankers and container vessels a focal point for internationally operating ship owners. Port development will lead to a growing fleet of work and patrol boats, as well as necessary dredging operations. Ever-important offshore exploration activities and the expanding oil and gas sector will demand their own new ships, platforms and services. Iran, in short, has something to offer to virtually anyone in both the maritime and the offshore industry.

Iranimex, powered by Europort The need for modernisation in Iran is huge in all economic areas. There is an urgent demand for technological renewal, which Iran’s industry is not equipped to satisfy. Exhibitions play a pivotal role in establishing new business relations, of which Iranimex is a shining example. Some 18 editions ago, Iranimex started as a local event, connecting visitors from all maritime branches and government organisations. After commencing an intensive cooperation with the world-renowned exhibition Europort in 2016 and rebranding itself as ‘Iranimex, powered by Europort’, the 2016 edition of the event grew by almost 30% compared to 2015, covering an exhibition area of 21,000 m2. Back in 2015, Europort’s trade fair organiser, Rotterdam Ahoy, was one of the first foreign parties to recognise the potential in Iran’s growing maritime market. Europort was the first international maritime show to host an Iran pavilion even before the Iranian trade sanctions were lifted. Europort’s involvement in Iranimex saw the international participation rate grow from 10 companies in 2015 to 114 companies in 2016. Visitor numbers soared to over 9,000, making it, in fact, the number one maritime event in the region. Iranimex is supported by a host of influential associations and organisations, including the Iranian Association of Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering and the Kish Investment and Development Co. The 2017 event offers plenty of opportunities to make new contacts and establish business ties with one of the fastest-growing maritime markets in the world. www.iranimex.ir

Kish Island The 19th edition of Iranimex will be held from 12-14 December 2017 on the tropical island of Kish, an Economic Free Zone. This popular holiday resort island is only a short (30 minute) flight away from Dubai International Airport and caters for international travellers on a daily basis. The important shipbuilding region of Iran is right across the water. Kish has a large selection of hotels, restaurants and activities. Average December temperatures are a balmy 23 degrees. No entry visa is required to enter Kish Island. Those who intend to enter the mainland of the I.R. of Iran before or after entering Kish Island should, however apply for an entry visa in good time. The organisation of Iranimex has selected an experienced international freight forwarder and travel agent to assist in getting materials and personnel to Kish and can help to arrange hotels.

The subsea knuckle boom crane increases operational flexibility and can be employed in a variety of offshore and subsea operations, providing Vos start with a large operational window and enabling vessel and crew to perform in even the harshest conditions. by combining the gangway with a motioncompensated crane on Vos start, activities such as the transfer of spare parts and maintenance services can be optimised, leading to lower overall costs. a kongsberg Windfarm Module planning tool is installed to assist safer and faster navigation in the field. this combines information about the wind and current in the vessel’s dp system, enabling the mapping of efficient and cost-effective routes to allow rapid approach and docking on wind turbines. In addition to the many logistical and technical demands of modern industry, excellent Internet connection is also essential. In close cooperation with vroon’s in-house icT experts, speedcast has

NAPA Safety Solutions in its nearly 30 years of operation, napa has beCome a global leader in software, serviCes and data analysis for the maritime industry, with a mission to provide in class dataled solUtions for safety, effiCienCy and prodUCtivity in both ship design and operations. napa has nearly 400 user organisations for its design software and napa solutions have been installed on 2,000 ships. one of the developments in which napa design software has played a major part is the constant improvement of safety in the cruise segment.

T

he cruise industry is the fastest-growing category in the leisure travel market. in 2015, the industry had an economic impact of nearly eur 100 billion globally, and this year an estimated 25.8 million people will go on a cruise. From a capacity standpoint, utilisation is constantly over 100%. six new vessels, representing an additional 22,000 passengers and an investment of eur 4 billion, will be launched this year. it is a hugely lucrative sector of the leisure industry, and safety is of critical importance. holiday-makers across the world place their trust in cruise lines to keep them safe while being in one of the world’s most treacherous environments: the open ocean. when companies fail to live up to that trust, the consequences are severe – in terms of human life, of assets and of reputation. it leaves a stain on the industry through association. napa takes a leading role in

Despite the highly competitive nature of the industry, safety brings all stakeholders together in finding advanced solutions, setting standards, and sharing practical knowledge. The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) leads this trend, instilling a culture of safety driven by informationsharing and self-regulation. CLIA tends to remain ahead of entities like the IMO, often moving faster than global SOLAS requirements. Because the entire industry uses NAPA for early design stages, NAPA 3D models and the simulations that can be

created from them create a common ‘NAPA language’. The software helps the industry to accommodate, manage, and communicate the best possible safety practices in every phase, from the design process to active operation, to responding to an emergency. Before the design phase even starts, NAPA provides the common framework for the regulations that underpin safe design. The data behind ship safety presents a challenge in the cruise industry. Mr Esa Henttinen, Executive Vice President Sales at NAPA, explains, “A cruise ship can have thousands of rooms, numerous staircases and elevators shafts and over 100 liquid tanks for ballast water, fresh water, grey water, lube oil and

SHIP DESIGN, CONSTR UCTION & FABRICATION more. our tools help naval architects to create the structural design and initial layout for the vessel in a fully equipped 3d cad model. Based on the model, the system can make the complex calculations that are required for compliance with imo standards on strength and stability. many of these calculations would be impossible to do manually, including index r requirements. index r represents the damage stability of the vessel – its ability to remain stable and afloat in the event of flooding caused by a collision.” napa’s software also allows designers to cope with the rapid changes and revisions that are common in early-stage design work, without compromising safety. napa’s software automatically links mandatory calculations to its 3d model, which gives the designer the freedom to make design changes promptly. “when moving a bulkhead, for example, napa takes only a few minutes to recalculate all the necessary information and automatically adapts the internal compartments to fit. this allows much faster design revisions,” says mr henttinen. after over 25 years in the business, napa’s position of trust within the market, sharing their knowledge of safe design, makes mr henttinen most proud. he now hopes to emulate that success by providing the international cruise industry with the napa emergency computer. By combining the 3d model that is developed during a vessel’s design stage with the unique algorithms that napa developed during their participation in Floodstand (the european union Fp7 project), the napa emergency computer provides situational awareness and decision-support in the event of a flooding emergency on operational passenger ships. “this development and the time and effort dedicated to advanced r&d allows us to continue our digital innovations,” mr henttinen says. “it is at the heart of how we support safety on cruises.”

the napa software development group was created at the wärtsilä shipyard in helsinki, Finland in the 1970s. in 1987, the group was reorganised into the napa Business unit of the wärtsilä-owned information technology company witec oy. the business unit became an independent company in 1989 through a management buyout, under the name napa oy (ltd). napa’s core competence is based on 3d product modelling technologies and naval architectural analyses. with a solid track record of setting new standards for 3d ship modelling and ship performance analysis, napa’s integrated solutions for design and operations ensure the realisation of the highest quality vessels both at the conceptual stage and throughout their operational lifetime.

Telstar: Designed for Efficiency

Telstar was built by Holland Shipyards and has the unique ‘Efficiency Double-ended DYnamic’ (EDDY)-design. EDDY-tugs are equipped with a hybrid powertrain consisting of electric, diesel or direct diesel-electric drive and two azimuth thrusters placed fore and aft on the tug. This means that unlike traditional tugboats, Telstar has two engine rooms. Combined with a narrow-shaped hull, this allows Telstar to move backwards as easily as forwards, making it especially efficient in small harbours and locks. This particular set of traits, combined with the attractive prospect of reduced

operational and fuel costs, was what originally aroused the interest of the Director of Iskes Towage and Salvage, Jim Iskes. Mr Iskes cooperated with Holland Shipyards to adapt the original EDDY-tug design to make Telstar even better suited for the job. As a result, Telstar is 6m shorter than the original EDDY-tug and yet it has a higher pull capacity. As course stability can be an issue with smaller, highperformance tugs, tracking-fins were incorporated at both ends, as well as bilge keels. The design makes it easy to drive, easy to maintain and easy to move in any direction. On average, Telstar now operates eight to ten times a day, towing ships

within the port and to and from the docks. As the tug is not intended for seagoing service, it only operates between the piers.

Hybrid Propulsion: Versatile and Cost-Effective

The aim was to improve performance while cutting operational costs, and Telstar seems to achieve both. Before Telstar (named after a local football team) was delivered to Iskes Towage and Salvage in IJmuiden, two weeks of extensive trials were carried out in the Port of Rotterdam. During bollard-pull trials, Telstar surpassed the aim of 75t with a sustained measured result of 76.4t. While running purely on

electric drive, the tug can perform a pull of 27t and travel at ten knots. As tugs often require a sudden surge of peak power, the main engines are always on standby. With the two Mitsubishi 1,450kW main diesel engines switched on, Telstar’s performance rises to the abovementioned pull of 75t and a maximum speed of 13.5 knots. Telstar has two identical azimuth thrusters, each with a 2.6m diameter, that can rotate 360° and are mounted in line with the hull. Each azimuth thruster is controlled by a Danfoss VACON NXP drive. The efficient permanent magnet electric motor/ generators are fully integrated with the thruster. In electric mode, the vessel saves significantly on fuel costs. Direct diesel

savings on Telstar are 10% and could prove even higher when the system is optimised further. As the running hours on the main diesel engines are reduced, scheduled overhauls and service downtime for oil or filter changes are reduced accordingly. The small diesel engines are basically standard lorry engines, which are much cheaper to service than larger engines as their parts are cheaper and need less lube oil. In this hybrid setup, they run far fewer hours, resulting in less wear, another cost cutter. Telstar’s Captain, Marcel Van Peenen, continues to experiment with towing and pushing procedures to find the perfect propulsion dynamics.

Danfoss equipped Telstar with VACON drives not just for its propulsion system, but also for the winches and the engine-room ventilation control unit. Telstar’s Chief Engineer, Guy Knorr, attests to the advantages of having the same system throughout the ship, as only one brand of spare parts is necessary and the software is easily maintained. If the display on one controller fails, the crew can enter commands or collect and transfer data through another controller.

Caterpillar Marine to Develop Innovative New Propulsion System Caterpillar Marine, partnering with Caterpillar Innovation & Technology Development Division (ITDD), is in the process of developing a proprietary advanced propulsion system for marine applications. The Cat Marine Advanced Variable Drive (AVD) is a patented system that leverages Caterpillar’s extensive experience with heavy-duty continuously variable transmission (CVT) technology, advanced controls and power system integration knowledge. AVD™ technology enables modulation and optimisation of the vessel’s engines independently from the speed of the fixed-pitch propellers. The speed of the propellers can be varied continuously throughout their full speed range. In addition, the power of the main and auxiliary engines can be channelled independently or jointly to propel the vessel. These features provide superior vessel performance and manoeuvrability while facilitating significant improvements in fuel and operational efficiency. i. www.marine.cat.com
