EDITOR’S NOTE

Welcome

W

elcome to this year’s second issue of ShipBuilding Industry. In this fresh edition, we want to take you on a tour through the maritime sector in Northern Europe with stories on some of the most renowned Northern European companies, such as Inmarsat, Ulstein, Steerprop, and many more. All of these companies are contributing to a greener marine future in their own unique way. We also wanted to give you a sneak peak of Posidonia 2022 and let you know what you can expect at the prestigious shipping event in Athens, which will be held from 6 to 10 June this year. The common theme running through all the events this year and the goal that all maritime companies are working towards is, without any doubt, the path to the International Maritime Organisation’s 2030 Strategy. The initial greenhouse gas (GHG) strategy envisages, in particular, a reduction in carbon intensity of international shipping (to reduce CO2 emissions per transport work, as an average across international shipping, by at least 40% by 2030, pursuing efforts towards 70% by 2050, compared to 2008) and that the total annual GHG emissions from international shipping should be reduced by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008. The maritime Industry has a lot of work in store and it is amazing to see what great efforts and milestones have already been reached and how eager and motivated the industry is to work on sustainability and combatting climate change impacts together.

ShipBuilding

We hope you enjoy this edition of ShipBuilding Industry as much as we do and we cannot wait to meet everyone in person again at the maritime fairs of 2022.

NEWS IN BRIEF Installation vessel shortage There is a shortage of specialised heavy lift vessels needed to install the increasing number of larger, next generation wind turbines. This jeopardises the offshore wind farm realisations. The Ulstein heavy-lift vessel designs can help to close the foundation installation gap. The timely realisation of offshore wind farms that are currently in the pipeline is in jeopardy after 2025, as multiple market analysts project a shortage of specialised heavy-lift vessels needed to install the increasing number of larger, next-generation wind turbines. Ulstein offers developers, operators and contractors a fully developed and proven solution. The Ulstein HX118 design is the third evolution of the successful and iconic Ulstein SOC 5000 design, of which several vessels are currently in operation or under construction. i. ulstein.com

POSIDONIA 2022

The world’s leading classification societies for the marine industry are returning to Posidonia this June.

A

lready, 90% of the exhibition floor is committed, and as new bookings continue, Posidonia 2022 is on course to match, if not overcome, its exhibitor record set in the pre-pandemic edition of 2018, which had registered 2,009 exhibitors and 22,000 visitors from 92 countries. The majority of this year’s confirmed Posidonia exhibition space has again been reserved by international companies, and at least 85 of the total number of exhibitors will be making their Posidonia debuts.

Posidonia 2022 will be held this summer from 6 to 10 June.

The world’s leading classification societies for the marine industry are returning to Posidonia this June, following the pandemic-induced hiatus, during which they have been mapping out the path to the International Maritime Organisation’s 2030 deadline, for an at least 40% reduction of shipping’s average carbon intensity (CO2 per tonne mile), compared to 2008.

Essence of speed The Posidonia exhibition will provide the world’s maritime community with a pertinent and timely platform to meet with the likes of ABS, BV, CCS, Class NK, DNV, KR, LR, and RINA, amongst others, to align a collective response to the IMO mandate and navigate the last miles remaining prior to the implementation deadline for the EEXI and CII requirements.

s h i p b u i l d i n g - i n d u str y.eu

Posidonia.indd 11

Speed is of the essence, both in terms of how quickly shipowners and the industry at large could respond to the IMO’s short term monitoring requirements, as well as insofar their long-term commitment to lower the limit of knots their fleets can travel. “We know that the journey to a destination of net zero by 2050 must begin and many shipowners and operators are well on their way. But companies and individuals will move at different speeds. Classification will play a key and vital role on the way to net zero, supporting stakeholders, whatever their speed of change, but we probably need to prepare to be surprised”, says Paillette Palaiologou, Vice President Marine & Offshore Division, SE Europe, Black Sea & Adriatic Zone, Bureau Veritas (BV).

Building momentum At Posidonia 2022, BV will showcase its full range of classification services and digital platforms, such as VeriSTAR Green, a tool which supports compliance with EEXI and CII. BV has already introduced guidance for ammonia as a marine fuel, methanol and wind propulsion rules and is about to delve deeper into hydrogen. American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) is another classification leader with many nautical miles under its belt on the course to decarbonisation. From its Athens-based central hub of its international sustainability network, ABS has been working with owners and

POSIDONIA 2022 different solutions. And within the framework of our maritime masterplan we are working towards a smart and emission-free maritime sector. The whole Dutch maritime sector has developed a maritime masterplan together. Through maritime R&D projects, technologies are being developed in the Netherlands to make shipping more sustainable. The goal of the masterplan is to come up with at least 30 emission-free ships by 2030,” says Mr de Graaf. But it’s not just new ships that need to comply with the IMO’s regulations. Existing fleets need to embark on extensive retrofitting projects to bring them in line with requirements. “The decarbonisation drive will lead to increasing demand for technologies and services to make the global fleet meet the environmental targets. Especially for the current trading vessels we expect a lot of retrofit demand going forward,” said Stavros Leousis, Managing Director of the Greek branch of UK’s ship repairs, drydocking and retrofitting company Newport Shipping, which is preparing for its second Posidonia participation.

Longterm impact

The 27th edition of the world’s most prestigious shipping event is gearing up to welcome the international maritime community back to its Athens Metropolitan Expo venue.

operators to develop individual decarbonisation strategies across the areas of benchmarking, improvement and monitoring. Georgios Plevrakis, ABS Vice President, Global Sustainability, says, “Existing vessels can improve operational efficiency, which encompasses speed optimization and digital technologies and these offer short term savings, which then need to be monitored to evidence the improvement on the carbon intensity trajectory”. According to DNV, decarbonisation is a challenge that no one player, or even industry, can tackle on its own. “Today we have moved on from declarations of intent to action. We need a collaborative effort, with joinedup infrastructure, energy, technology, understanding, regulations, and financial support, all striving towards the same goal. There is real momentum building, and we all need to keep focused on

Posidonia.indd 12

taking the next step forward to get to this goal,” says Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO DNV Maritime.

Smart and emission-free Shipbuilding is a key stakeholder with a significant role to play in the decarbonisation discourse as it needs to support shipowners’ efforts to comply with the stringent requirements of the regulator. As a representative of the collective Posidonia 2022 participation of the Dutch shipbuilding industry, Roel de Graaf, Managing Director, Netherlands Maritime Technology, believes that energy transition is a topic of profound importance for the global maritime industry. “We are already seeing a lot happening in the field of electrification and alternative fuels. For different ship types, there are

Theodore Vokos, Managing Director, Posidonia Exhibitions, explains, “Decarbonisation and its drivers of new propulsion technologies, alternative fuels, and required infrastructures will be extensively debated at the Posidonia 2022 Conference programme, as indeed will all other issues of interest and concern to the global shipping industry. “Once again, in June this year, Posidonia will provide a prestigious platform for the international maritime community to convene, communicate with each other, learn from each other, establish new partnerships and discover the latest trends and technologies that will impact the sector in the years to come.” Posidonia is organised under the auspices of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Insular Policy, the Union of Greek Shipowners and the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping and with the support of the Municipality of Piraeus and the Greek Shipping Co-operation Committee.

SHIP REPORT

Make a Wish Disney Cruise Line has commissioned Meyer Werft with the construction of three new ships. The first, Disney Wish, will be the first Triton-class vessel in the Disney fleet to feature an eco-friendly LNG drive system. The two other vessels will be delivered in 2024 and 2025.

M

eyer Werft already constructed two cruise ships for the American shipping company back in 2010 and 2011: Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. They became the largest ocean liners ever built in Germany at the time of their completion. And the three vessels in the Triton Class will be even bigger. Disney Wish will showcase the immersive family entertainment, enchanting storytelling and unparalleled service that

only Disney can deliver. Disney Wish guests will be able to enjoly all-new enchantment on board, where fantastical worlds and beloved stories from Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar are brought to life like never before. Disney Wish was originally scheduled to sail on her maiden voyage on 9 June 2022, but the ship’s delivery has been pushed back as a result of shipyard delays. The ship is now scheduled to debut on 14 July 2022.

SHIP REPORT

“We are pleased to have achieved another step toward completion of the ship with the undocking. It will then be the fifth ship Meyer Werft will have delivered in the Corona pandemic. We are convinced that the Disney Wish will surprise the cruise industry and Disney fans with some special features”, says Jan Meyer, Managing Director of Meyer Werft. According to a press release by the cruise line “It took about five hours and 110,00m3 of water from the River Ems to flood the building dock, followed by a breathtaking exit as the ship sailed out with only 3 feet of clearance on either side.” Disney Wish is the newest, and largest, cruise ship to join the Disney Cruise Line fleet. Despite COVID-19 related delays, the highly anticipated ship is ready to set new standards for the cruise industry. On 30 March, Disney Cruise Line celebrated a new ship build milestone moving one step closer to Disney Wish’s delivery. Disney Wish was moved from the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany to the Eemshaven in the

Netherlands. During this manoeuvre, the Disney Wish entered open water for the first time. The 41km conveyance on the River Ems took about 24 hours to complete. The voyage included navigating locks, drawbridges, and tight clearings along the way. During the Ems passage and the subsequent technical and nautical sea trials on the North Sea, there are initially approx. 750 people onboard. “It is another important milestone for the ship and the shipyard. The entire team is working hard at full speed to complete this special project,” says Henning Stellermann, Project Manager at Meyer Werft. On 8 April, Disney Wish marked a new milestone beginning her sea trials to test her systems in open water from Eemshaven, the Netherlands. The vessel remained in the harbour for a while, presumably testing thrusters and other systems, before moving into the North Sea. On 12 April, Disney Wish returned to Eemshaven from her sea trials. Disney Wish will finally set sail in the summer of 2022.

ernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) offers a comprehensive range of ship management services that are tailored to their clients’ specific requirements. As part of a research and development project, BSM has for the first time investigated the influence of the behavioural change of individual seafarers on carbon emissions on selected ships managed by BSM Deutschland (BSMD). Using clean-tech start-up Signol’s app, which is based on behavioural science best practice, remarkable reductions in bunker fuel consumption were detected on single ships.

BSM.indd 18

Teaming up with London-based cleantech company Signol, BSM studied how individual behavioural change can lead to a reduction in ships’ energy demand and carbon emissions. This is done by combining the analysis of operational data from selected BSMD managed vessels with cutting-edge behavioural science in an app and tailored communications developed by Signol.

Individualised targets During the research project, which ran in the second half of 2021, 60 Masters and Chief Engineers on 28 vessels under full management of BSMD were invited to

take part in the trial on a voluntary basis. During this time, each participating crew member received individualised targets via the Signol app which are calculated based on the seafarer’s prior performance. Every week, the participating seafarers received updates on their personal milestones and achievements via the app and email. Through a combination of fair targets and positive feedback, Signol gently nudged individual Masters and Chief Engineers to implement fuel-saving practices.

Nudged to have an impact The analysis of the pilot tests revealed promising results on single vessels which need to be verified by further tests. The R&D project proved that seafarers can be nudged and become aware of their individual influence on major challenges. Nick Topham, Managing Director of BSM Deutschland, says, “I am pleased with the overall outcome of the pilot project as it proved our hypothesis that seafarers are not only important key workers, but also play a valuable role in the decarbonization of the shipping industry. We are impressed by the individual efforts of all participating Captains and Chief Engineers to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. In the long run, it can provide a great added value to our owners and charterers’ operations, and to the achievement of climate targets.” Niklas Körner, Investment Manager at Innoport, is also satisfied with the promising trial run. Through Innoport, its venture capital arm, the Schulte Group has strategically invested in Signol. “The first results are very encouraging and prove Signol’s product-market fit in maritime. There is still a lot to understand about how to use behavioural change in the most effective way toward greener shipping. Applying behavioural science to vessel operations is an exciting new field

for the Schulte Group which requires further research and development work to deliver even more reliable results.”

Technical, operational, and behavioural Dan White, CEO and Co-Founder at Signol, says, “The human side of operational efficiency is arguably now a crucial contributor to reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). This ground-breaking work in shipping shows just how important seafarers are to our global environmental objectives and what happens when we empower them with the right feedback. These results create direct value for the environment, for business, and for the crew, and we can’t wait to work with more innovative shipping companies to deal with GHG abatement in line with the objectives for climate change.” To better evaluate the benefits and opportunities of behavioural science, BSM intends to strengthen its collaboration with Signol and to conduct further tests with interested partners. The aim is to review and harness all possibilities to reduce the carbon footprint: technical, operational, and indeed behavioural.

Together with Signol, BSM studied how individual behavioural change can lead to a reduction in ships’ energy demand and carbon emissions.

Behavioural Science Behavioural science is the systematic study of human behaviour and strategies to change our approach in a targetoriented and verifiable way. In short, it is the study of what we do, why we do it, and how we can change it in a targeted way. Behavioural science combines knowledge and methods from a variety of disciplines, including behavioural economics, psychology, sociology, and neuroscience. Global players such as Google or Uber have been working for some time with their own Applied Behavioural Science research teams in order to better understand their customers and influence their behaviour. It is also being applied in the automotive industry. For example, even the smallest changes in an individual’s car-driving behaviour can have a significant impact on fuel consumption. i. bs-shipmanagement.com

With their dredging vessels, DC Dredging is a regular customer of Wesco. Photo courtesy of DC Dredging.

Servicing the dredging industry Because of the tough working conditions at sea and on rivers, a lot is asked from the equipment used on dredging vessels. To keep the vessels and equipment in good conditions at all times, dredging companies must rely on construction and maintenance partners such as Wesco IJmuiden. ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF WESCO UNLESS MENTIONED OTHERWISE.

W

esco IJmuiden was founded in 1984. Throughout the years, the company has built a large track record in the design, engineering, construction, installation, as well as maintenance and repair of dredging equipment. In doing so, it attracted many leading companies in the dredging and

offshore industry, including DC Dredging. As Diederik van Halsema, Fleet Manager of DC Dredging, explains, “With our dredging vessels, we are a regular customer of Wesco. They visit IJmuiden for regular planned maintenance and overhaul, for repairs and for mobilisation and demobilisation services.”

Swift and flexible Trailing suction hopper dredger DC Ostend recently visited Wesco for various planned service works. Unexpected issues that came to light were also taken care of. The job was done and the vessel was back into service within three weeks. According to Jeroen Hilgers, Project

DC Ostend; bucket wheel excavator. When working on a vessel’s dredging equipment, Wesco looks further than just the planned service.

Manager of Wesco, this is one of the company’s strengths. “Of course, when we are working on a vessel’s dredging equipment, we look further than just the planned service. As we are often working together with the vessel’s crew, we discuss with them what other unexpected parts need to be serviced and we take care of this as well. During a project, dredgers often have to deal with damaged and broken equipment, and it is our strength to be able to act swiftly and flexible to have the vessels back in business as soon as possible.”

Always a solution Mr Hilgers continues, “With our experienced and think-along team of engineers, we always come up with a solution, no matter how. For

s h i p b u i l d i n g - i n d u str y.eu

Breman.indd 27

DC Dredgers, for example, we took care of replacing the entire suction pipe of the Margaret Ann that was damaged during a project. The pipe consisted of two pieces of 12m by 550mm. Within three days, we removed the damaged pipe, designed and constructed a new one, and installed it on the vessel. The delay for DC Dredging could hence be minimised. In another situation, we constructed a temporary dredge pump impeller. This one was not as wear resistant as the original one, but it helped the dredger to finish the job, while an original part could be ordered meanwhile.”

Unburden customers According to Peter Wempe, Sales Manager at Wesco, it is not just the

expertise and skills of the Wesco team that makes the company a valued partner for the dredging industry. “We try to unburden our customer as much as possible for each project. This means we take care of various additional issues, such as arranging a berth for the vessel that needs to be serviced. To do so, it helps that we have a good relationship with the port authority. We are part of the Breman Machinery Group since July 2021, which enables us to make use of the quay and workshop facilities of Breman Offshore located just 200m away from us. Also, when necessary, in our region (IJmuiden is part of the port of Amsterdam) we can work with a broad range of companies that can help us with additional services such as crane and generator rental companies,

hydraulics and electrotechnical service companies, as well as divers.”

Offshore wind

Wesco can make use of Breman Offshore’s facilities, located only 200m from the company.

Today, many dredging companies also operate in the offshore wind industry, and in their wake Wesco has also moved towards this business. “Since the upcoming offshore wind industry,” Mr Hilgers says, “we have been servicing more and more offshore installation vessels. Like dredging vessels, this type of vessel is also demobilised and mobilised before each new installation project. And because of the harsh circumstances at sea, repair and maintenance of the equipment is also a regular necessity. Next to this, we also service other types of vessels on a regular base, so although we are known for our dredger activities, our scope is actually much wider.”

International expansion Although Wesco also has customers abroad, so far the company’s focus has been on the Netherlands. However, if it is up to Mr Wempe, this will soon change. “It is our ambition to expand our foreign activities. With our skills and know-how, we have built an excellent reputation among our current customers. A reputation we can use for expanding our business on an international level.” Talking about a good reputation, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and therefore Mr Van Halsema has the final say, “We have been working with Wesco IJmuiden for quite some years now. Being satisfied with their fast, flexible, thorough, and collaborative way of working, we know that our dredging vessels are in good hands with them, which is why we look forward to a further fruitful partnership.” Wesco IJmuiden is located in the port of Amsterdam and for additional services, can work with a broad range of companies nearby.

In the near future, we will develop Taiwan’s offshore wind market further as the expertise and experience of CDWE’s local construction teams develops. This will enable us to take steady steps from Taiwan into the Asia Pacific region’s offshore wind industry in the long-term.” Hugo Bouvy, Managing Director DEME Offshore, comments, “We are proud to have successfully reached the next stage of the construction process. Green Jade highlights DEME’s full commitment to the flourishing Taiwanese offshore wind market. This is underscored by the fact

that this represents the largest single overseas investment ever made by the DEME Group. This special vessel is set to revolutionise the offshore wind sector, given its extensive capabilities and loading capacity. Our decision to make such a substantial investment – taken at the height of the pandemic – is already proving to be the right one. Indeed, ‘Green Jade’ has a healthy orderbook for the first three years.”

Launch ceremony On Monday, 4 April of this year, an official launching ceremony for the revolutionary offshore installation vessel Green Jade was held at CSBC’s shipyard in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, marking the latest major milestone in the construction of this vessel, which is designed to handle the next generation of multi-megawatt turbines, jackets and components. Green Jade will be the second of these exceptional vessels to enter the fleet. DEME is soon welcoming the offshore installation vessel Orion, featuring a 5,000t crane and the first of its kind in the sector. Both Orion and Green Jade bring a game-changing installation concept to the offshore energy market. They have an unrivalled combination of load capacity, impressive lifting heights and green technology.

he first dredger, TSHD Anchorage was successfully delivered to the owners in 2020. Both TSHDs are designed to extract sand and gravel aggregates from the seabed. Each vessel has a single suction pipe and a hopper capacity of 3,000m³. These innovative vessels have a length of 105.90m, width of 15.85m and a draught of 6.94m. The newbuilds are equipped with a smart diesel-electric system, developed in close collaboration between the shipbuilder and D&A Electric, that efficiently regulates the energy supply for sailing, dredging, and unloading the ship. As a result, energy and fuel consumption is optimised and the ship’s emissions are greatly reduced.

Krakesandt The postponed christening of the second dredger, now named Krakesandt, took place in Kampen, the Netherlands, on Thursday 24 March. The ship was christened by Ms. Sabien Binkhorst and its name was kept a secret until the actual christening. The ship is named after a 14th century sandbank off the coast of the Dutch town of Cadzand. There is also the legend of the kraken, a sea monster of enormous size that looked like an octopus. According to sailor’s lore, when part of this monster was above the water level, it resembled a sandbar and many a ship mistakenly docked there. The ship and crew would then disappear into the depths never to be seen again. As current knowledge has it, this sea creature actually existed until at least the 10th century. After Easter, Krakesandt went from the yard in Kampen to Thecla Bodewes Shipyards in Harlingen, from where the sea and dredging trials started.

Reduced environmental footprint In addition to smart and stable power management, the use of the E-prop® electric propulsion increases the overall propeller efficiency during dredging, sailing, and manoeuvring, optimizing energy and fuel consumption and greatly reducing the ship’s emissions. The hull shape is optimised for sailing with both loaded and unloaded draught by means

The first dredger, TSHD Anchorage was successfully delivered to the owners in 2020.

of Computional Fluid Dynamics calculations. The trailing suction hopper dredger is – just like the successful sister ship Anchorage – ready for the future by applying this sustainable and state-ofthe-art propulsion technology.

Specially developed unloading and loading system The dredger was designed and built to extract sand from the North Sea, which is used as a raw material in the concrete industry and road and house construction. The ship is equipped with two large open holds, the hoppers, which allows loading of different mixtures. In the North Sea, about 25km from the

s h i p b u i l d i n g - i n d u str y.eu

Krakesandt.indd 39

coast, these hoppers are filled up with a sand pump and a drag head that drags over the bottom like a kind of vacuum cleaner. When the hopper is full, the sand from the large dredger is transferred to inland vessels. A special wet discharge installation has been designed and built for this purpose. In order to get the sand out of the hoppers, the sand is liquefied from the bottom up through drainage pipes integrated into the floor of the hold. Two special electrically driven double-walled sand pumps suck up the (quick)sand from below in the hold and pump it via a hydraulically manipulable loading arm into the hold of the inland vessel moored next to the seagoing vessel. The (quick)sand sucked up is so concentrated that hardly any water needs to be pumped overboard from the cargo hold of the inland vessel. When the hold is almost empty, there is also a manipulable water cannon ready to spray the last remaining remnants of sand from the corners so that that too can be loaded into the barge. A special feature is that the loading arm can follow the movement of the inland vessel. Because during loading the inland vessel gets deeper and deeper and the hopper dredger less and less deep, the skipper does not have to do anything, and the cargo can be transferred quickly and efficiently so that the hopper dredger can start the next journey without having been in port.

100% Dutch construction The modern, intelligent dredger Krakesandt was built entirely in the Netherlands in collaboration with Dutch suppliers. Like sister ship Anchorage, the ship was designed by Barkmeijer Shipyards, part of the Thecla Bodewes Shipyards group, and built at Thecla Bodewes Shipyards in Kampen. Client De Hoop Terneuzen is a major supplier of building materials in Holland and Belgium. The dredger is being commissioned in the first quarter of this year. The ship has strengthened the fleet of De Hoop Terneuzen in the spring of 2022. Barkmeijer Shipyards and Thecla Bodewes Shipyards have over 300 years of shipbuilding experience between them. This knowledge and experience is successfully used for the development and construction of a strong range of products: dredgers, short-sea vessels, and robust low-water solutions such as the successful series of pusher tugs for European and South American inland waterways. The success of this project has been made possible in particular by the close cooperation and trust between De Hoop Terneuzen, Thecla Bodewes Shipyards, and all partners involved. i. tbshipyards.com

GREEN SHIP TECHNOLOGY

Scrubber installation in China.

Rick van Kasteren, Account Executive at VDL AEC Maritime.

The road to ship-based carbon capture Based in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, Dutch company VDL AEC Maritime offers high quality scrubbing technology. The experience in extensive research into emission reducing techniques dates back more than 25 years. VDL AEC Maritime now offers complete and client specific SOx- and CO2-scrubber systems for shipping companies. With more than 100 systems installed across numerous vessel types & sizes, VDL AEC Maritime has since built a strong reputation of delivering high-quality solutions for the maritime industry and has proven to be a solid project partner. ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF VDL AEC MARITIME.

V

DL AEC Maritime started out by providing scrubbers for the landbased industry. With more than 25 years of experience and having delivered more than 2,500 systems, they have become experts in the field of

4 0 | S B I 2 0 2 2 | Volum e 16 | Issue 2

VDL.indd 40

scrubbers. The first scrubber systems for the maritime industry were provided for ships in Scandinavian waters, where legislation for sulphur emission reduction had previously been initiated by local authorities.

Since 1 January 2020, all vessels worldwide must comply with the regulation for a maximum sulphur emission of 0.5%. Ships can do this either by sailing on very low sulphur fuel (VLSFO), which is very expensive, or by

s h i p b u i l d i n g -i n d u s tr y. e u

20-04-2022 16:00

GREEN SHIP TECHNOLOGY

continuing to sail on the existing high sulphur fuel oil, or heavy fuel oil (HFO), which is less expensive. This means that the greater the difference between HFO and VLSFO prices, the faster the payback time of a scrubber investment for shipowners. Because of IMO2020 regulations entering into force, VDL AEC Maritime delivered more than 100 scrubber systems for the maritime sector before 1 January 2020. Not much later, the COVID pandemic arose, causing oil prices to slump. With the collapse of oil prices, the difference between HFO and VLSFO prices also became smaller, making the payback period for a scrubber longer and, as a result, interest declined. “Currently, the market is starting to pick up and you can see that oil prices have risen again, making the difference between HFO and VLSFO prices larger again as well. With this increase, the interest in scrubber systems has increased again”, says Rick van Kasteren of VDL AEC Maritime.

As of 1 January 2030 (IMO2030), all ships worldwide must achieve a CO2 reduction of 40% compared to 2008.

Ready for the next step In addition, a new regulation is on the way. As of 1 January 2030 (IMO2030), all ships worldwide must achieve a CO2 reduction of 40% compared to 2008 levels. This is quite a challenge for shipowners. VDL AEC Maritime currently develops a ship-based carbon capture system that will be able to reduce CO2 emissions of a ship by up to 90%. The system is scalable, meaning that the shipowner is able to comply with not only the IMO2030 rule (-40% compared to 2008), but also directly with the IMO2050 rule (-50% compared to 2008). In addition, the system gives a significant financial advantage when CO2 taxes for shipping come into effect. For European waters, this carbon tax will be introduced next year, according to the ‘Fit for 55’ programme. This means that for every tonne of CO2 less emitted by a vessel, no carbon tax has to be paid. “With expected taxes in excess of USD 100 per tonne, a ship-based carbon capture system will quickly pay for itself”, says Mr van Kasteren. The currently most reliable strategy to reduce carbon emissions is to capture the CO2 released during combustion from the exhaust gases. This CO2 must then be briefly stored on board until it

VDL AEC Maritime received an order for the delivery of two retrofit scrubber systems to international shipping company Seatrade Groningen.

New order from Dutch company In March, VDL AEC Maritime received an order for the delivery of two retrofit scrubber systems to international shipping company Seatrade Groningen. With this order, VDL AEC Maritime extends its portfolio for the first time in their own home country, ánd to a Dutch ship-owner. The two SOx-scrubber systems will be delivered and installed before the end of 2022. Joost Wijdeveld of VDL AEC Maritime says, “This deal is very important for us. We are very excited with our new client Seatrade Groningen and we are looking forward to a great cooperation. For us this is another milestone and thanks to optimisation of our supply chain and a sophisticated strategic inventory policy we are able to reduce lead times for Seatrade, despite worldwide material shortages, in order to deliver quickly.”

can be unloaded in a port. A major advantage of a carbon capture system is that it hardly requires any adjustments to the current engine system. The system

can be integrated in newbuilds and can also be retrofitted on existing ships. i. vdlaecmaritime.com

FOCUS NORTHERN EUROPE

By modernising the system, Steerprop also provided a capability for remote service diagnostics.

Future-proofing a vessel in nine days Back in 2019, the technical department at Alfons Hakans noticed a need to modernise and upgrade the propulsion control system on its Azimuth Stern Drive tug Artemis. It was no longer possible to get spare parts for its original control system; and although it was still reliable, for safety reasons the company decided to look for reasonable solutions for a full-scale upgrade. ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF STEERPROP UNLESS MENTIONED OTHERWISE.

“W

e noticed pretty quickly that it made sense to renew all parts related to the control of the propulsion units”, says Technical Manager Tuomas Raumanen. “Basically, everything between the master’s hands and propulsion units had to be replaced, including things like control levers, cables, computer units, and feedback sensors.” Alfons Hakans began to look for suppliers, and Steerprop, located near Hakans’ headquarters, promptly gave a quotation. Mr Raumanen notes that

4 2 | S B I 2 0 2 2 | Volum e 16 | Issue 2

Steerprop.indd 42

Hakans particularly appreciated the ease of communication and rapid responses, and this, topped with fast delivery and a reasonable price, made Steerprop an obvious choice.

Minimal downtime The final order was confirmed at the end of 2020. First, Steerprop paid a few visits to get to know Artemis and its operations. During these visits, a timetable was set to ensure the downtime of the tug was kept to a

minimum. To decrease the amount of downtime, Hakans’ own workers and subcontractors started preliminary works, such as installing new cables and manufacturing foundations for electric cabinets, whilst the tug was still operating normally. Meanwhile, Steerprop was building the entire control system at their workshop. “This way the installation time onboard would be as short as possible”, Mr Raumanen says. The installation began at the end of

August of last year. First, the old control system was dismantled, and the team ensured that all necessary cables had been installed. Next, all-electric cabinets related to the new system were installed, which was an easy process thanks to all the preliminary work. Connecting the new cables to different units was the most time-consuming part, and it was completed on schedule. After seven days of work, it was time to run a test. During the sea trials, the adjusting of the final parameters was easily done as it had been considered already when planning the software.

Increased reliability From the beginning of the installation to final approval from Alfons Hakans, installing the new control system took nine days in total. “After sea trials and final adjustments, our masters and chief engineers were satisfied and also surprised how well the whole process went,” Mr Raumanen says. “Of course it takes a while before masters and others get used to the new type of control levers, but that’s common when changes are made to older vessels.” The biggest advantages in comparison to the old system are, in Mr Raumanen’s view, that all adjustments are very easy to make, and the new system is significantly more reliable. The information the system provides about the status of the propulsion units is also much easier to understand. In total, Mr Raumanen estimates the upgrade to add ten to fifteen years to the lifecycle of the vessel. “All in all, we’ve been satisfied with the new control system and will continue our good relationship with Steerprop in the future”, Mr Raumanen notes.

More user-friendly From Steerprop’s point of view, the cooperation with Alfons Hakans went extremely well. Technical Sales Manager Esa Peltomaa tells that Steerprop designers were in frequent contact with

the personnel on board to ensure that the new system fitted existing spaces and locations as well as fulfilled the wishes of end-users. Steerprop delivered a control system modified to existing propulsion, as well as a bridge control

system with control levers, control panels, and relevant touch screens. Like Mr Raumanen, Mr Peltomaa says that the new system is more user-friendly than the old one, and it also conveys detailed information that makes service operations, changing settings, and calibrations easy and reliable. Steerprop was also able to make customisations based on the customer’s wishes. For example, bridge control panels were customised to fit existing cabinets, and touch screen views, control panel buttons, and indications fit existing vessel functionalities and desired functions. “By modernising the system, Steerprop also provided a capability for remote service diagnostics, which gives Steerprop’s service department the ability to diagnose faults and status of the system remotely”, Mr Peltomaa explains.

“This makes better service assistance possible by diagnosing possible faults even before the first service engineer’s visit on board.” Essentially, the vessel has now been future-proofed. For example, should Alfons Hakans want to replace existing units with Steerprop’s azimuth propulsors, the existing control systems can be fully utilised with minimal changes to further improve costeffectiveness. “Steerprop guarantees the serviceability for our products for decades by using and selecting components that are not becoming obsolete as well as designing the system well enough that future upgrades are possible with minimal work,” Mr Peltomaa concludes. i. steerprop.com
