Welcome to the third edition of ShipBuilding Industry. Time seems to be flying lately, as the industry is preparing for a greener future.

In little more than two decades, a large part of the world fleet will have to be replaced with zero-emission vessels if regulators set a goal of decarbonising shipping by 2050. This means that the industry will have to start the transition to zero-emission ships by around 2030 at the latest to have a chance of decarbonising in time. The decarbonisation debate’s focus is on whether owners can be motivated to build zero-emission ships through regulation or emissions trading schemes.

In this issue, we are taking a closer look at some new green shipping technologies on the market and we have a preview of Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe 2023 for you, which will be held from 20 to 22 June. We hope to meet you there!

Eight partners from five countries share the goal of strengthening European shipyards in global competition. Based on CONTACT Elements, they will develop a new platform that digitises shipbuilding end-to-end and makes it more e cient. The EU is funding the research project through its innovation program Horizon Europe. In the Smart European Shipbuilding (SEUS) project, shipyards, universities, and software manufacturers are bundling their expertise to raise shipbuilding in Europe to a new e ciency level. Their ambitious goal is to reduce development and assembly times by 30 and 20% through a collaboration platform.

New Shoalbuster and Stan Pontoon

Damen Shipyards Group has recently delivered two vessels, a Shoalbuster 3209 named Aria, and a Stan Pontoon 4113 to A.R. Singh Contractors Damen signed the contract for the Shoalbuster with its customer in December 2021. Closer to completion of the vessel, the shipbuilder was able to deliver the pontoon within a month after contract e ectiveness thanks to its practice of building vessels in series and keeping them in stock for short lead times. The combination of the Shoalbuster and the Stan Pontoon will soon leave the Damen construction yard in Gorinchem, the Netherlands, to work in the marine contracting business in the Southern Caribbean.

Ebusco framework agreement awarded for maritime batteries

Ebusco (Euronext: EBUS) has signed a framework agreement to provide Oechies Elektrotechniek with maritime battery packs for inland shipping for one year. Initially, the deal involves the delivery of 36 battery packs for the WEVA Antonie 1, the first-ever new-build hydrogen-powered inland vessel. In total, the or the delivery of maritime batteries, Ebusco builds on years of experience in large-scale battery and battery management systems (BMS). The first delivery of 36 battery packs and six BMS systems accounts for a total capacity of 1,089kWh, enabling the full substitution of a large diesel generator.

Jan De Nul Group lands 525kV cable system portfolio by TenneT

Jan De Nul Group, LS Cable & System, and Denys NV have been awarded a 525kV HVDC cable system portfolio for the German electricity grid by TenneT. BalWin 4, LanWin 1, and LanWin 5 are cable systems consisting of both o shore and onshore sections, while the NordOstLink is an onshore cable system. The combined DC cable length of the awarded portfolio is almost 2,000km. TenneT is heavily investing in the grid connections of o shore wind farms for both the Dutch and German energy grid, for which these cable system packages are designed. BalWin 4 and LanWin 1 will connect to the Unterweser area, LanWin 5 to Rastede. All grid connections will have a capacity of 2GW each and will be operational respectively by 2029, 2030, and 2031.

COBRA battery system receives RINA type approval

The certificate issued by the classification society RINA underscores the highest safety standard and the wide range of marine applications of the COBRA battery system. In addition to the existing DNV certification, the COBRA battery system has reached another milestone with type approval by the classification society RINA.

Multraship names two Damen tugs in Terneuzen

On Thursday 11 May, Multraship Towage & Salvage named two Damen-built tugs at a Christening ceremony held at Multraship’s home port of Terneuzen, the Netherlands. Multratug 5, a Damen Stan Tug 1205 and Multratug 6, a Damen ASD Tug 2810, were immediately entered into service upon delivery to Multraship and are currently in operation in the River Scheldt area. The speed with which the tugs were delivered was thanks to Damen’s practice of building in series and for stock – a feature that Multraship, as a long-term client of Damen’s – has long benefitted from. Although based on proven, standard designs, Damen is able to tailor its vessels to the requirements of its clients.

World Europa equipped with GE Power Conversion’s in-board propulsion system

GE Power Conversion was chosen by shipbuilding company Chantiers de l’Atlantique to equip the first two of the World Class vessels, MSC Cruises’ latest class of ships, for improved propulsion performance. The first ship, MSC World Europa, is now in operation at sea and the second vessel is currently in build. This latest one marks the 18th MSC vessel to be powered by GE’s electric propulsion system. GE Power Conversion’s energy-e cient PWM induction technology, such as that installed onboard MSC World Europa, can help fleet operators comply with ‘clean ship’ regulations while also helping to reduce operating costs in today’s competitive market.

Wind-powered merchant ship to be constructed

A development project for the construction of a 136m, wind-powered merchant ship is underway following the final selection of the wind-assisted propulsion technology for the vessel, an active crowdfunding campaign, and the forging of key strategic partnerships. Nantes-based eco-responsible and low-carbon shipping company Neoline will begin construction of its first Neoliner cargo ship later this year, ready for it to enter service in 2024-25. Following technical studies carried out by Chantiers de l’Atlantique, Neopolia, Mauric and D-Ice, the ship’s rigging will consist of two Solid Sail folding rigging systems, including two 76m masts, each equipped with the Solid Sail sail technology of 1,100m² and a flexible jib of 400m², with a total sail area of 3,000m².

Stornes sets new record

Van Oord’s flexible fallpipe vessel Stornes has set a new world record. The vessel carried out subsea rock installation works in a record water depth of 1.364m. A distance comparable to almost five times the length of the Ei el tower! The Subsea Rock installation works were executed in relation to the development of the Sangomar field in Senegal. Subsea7 contracted Van Oord to install 262.000t of rock in water depths ranging from 800 to the record depth of 1.364m for the stabilisation and protection of subsea infrastructure. The Sangomar field is located approximately 100km south of Dakar. Due to the remote project location, the rock is supplied to the vessel by a ship-to-ship transfer method.

An innovative ecosystem of solutions

In a first for Swiss marine power company WinGD, its dual-fuel X-DF2.0 engines power two newly delivered car carriers for Japanese ship owner NYK Line.

The vessels feature its cutting-edge emissions reduction technology, energy management and digital optimisation solutions with the engine at the heart of the energy ecosystem. They also feature the most comprehensive installation to date of WinGD’s innovative ecosystem of solutions. The highly advanced WinGD technologies which feature in the sophisticated LNG-hybrid vessels include WinGD’s X-DF2.0 iCER (Intelligent Control by Exhaust Recycling), X-EL Energy Manager and WiDE (WinGD integrated Digital Expert). The state-of-the art 7,000 Car Equivalent Units (CEU) pure car and truck carriers Jasmine Leader and Wild Rose Leader are the first of a four-strong series of vessels for NYK Line using the same, extensive suite of WinGD solutions.

iCER technology

The LNG-battery hybrid configuration comprises WinGD’s latest 7X62DF-2.1 two-stroke engines coupled with shaft generator, DC-links, batteries and bow thruster drives, with system integration and holistic energy management also provided by WinGD.

The vessels are the first in operation with WinGD’s X-DF2.0 iCER technology which is designed to cool and recirculate part of the exhaust gas through a lowpressure path during operation in gas mode. The iCER technology reduces methane slip by 50% while providing significant e ciency gains.

NYK Line has noted that the new vessels, which also feature an enhanced hull design and other fuel economy features, will be 40% more energy e cient than conventionally fuelled ships in the same NYK Line fleet. That e ciency takes the vessels well beyond current and future CII requirements and past International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) current greenhouse gas emission target for 2030.

X-EL Energy Management

The vessels also showcase the first deployment of WinGD’s electrical energy solution, X-EL Energy Management, o ering a new battery-hybrid power integration and sustainability service. By integrating two-stroke marine engine control into the electrified vessel power system, X-EL widens the range of vessels that can benefit from electrification as shipping seeks to improve e ciency and reduce emissions.

Based on its in-depth knowledge of main engine performance WinGD has optimised energy flow to run the main engine constantly at its optimal point while avoiding less ideal energy usage. The whole energy system is managed by X-EL Energy Manager.

WiDE engine monitoring and diagnostics

The car carriers also feature the WiDE engine monitoring and diagnostics, which uses a digital twin of the unique system to compare ideal and actual behaviour based on real-time operation and conditions. Anomalies from expected behaviour are detected, diagnosed and communicated to crew and shoreside teams with advice for troubleshooting and maintenance.

The promise of a wider European market

The reopening of Greek shipyards will help the European maritime technology sector to strengthen its position on the global market, says HEMEXPO President, Eleni Polychronopoulou.

Asia’s decades-long dominance of the shipbuilding industry is well documented, with South Korea and China in particular having long since established themselves as global shipbuilding powerhouses. Nevertheless, European shipyards remain strong, with an annual production value of around EUR 43 billion and a collective civil and naval orderbook value surpassing that of their Asian counterparts.

Opportunities throughout Europe

Where Europe truly outcompetes Asia – and every other world region – is in marine equipment manufacture and supply. Europe is home to around 22,000 manufacturers and suppliers of marine equipment that together employ over 320,000 people, have an annual production value of approximately EUR 70 billion and represent 50% of the global market share.

With the imminent reopening of two major shipyards in Greece, Skaramanga and Elefsina, Europe’s maritime technology industry is set for a further boost, says Eleni Polychronopoulou, President of HEMEXPO – Hellenic Marine Equipment Manufacturers and Exporters: “The shipbuilding sector in Greece is in a period of revival, and this creates new opportunities for equipment manufacturers not only in Greece but throughout Europe to work with major players in international shipping. shipyards, classification societies and the entire maritime supply chain, HEMEXPO is uniquely positioned to provide technical solutions that address the industry’s most urgent challenges. The soon-to-reopen Greek shipyards of Skaramanga and Elefsina will perform repair and refit works, along with specific New Building with aparticular focus on equipping vessels for more sustainable operations – and this, Ms Polychronopoulou says, is an area in which HEMEXPO companies excel. “The range of products and applications in which our members specialise is broad, but today there is a special emphasis on sustainability,” she explains. “Examples include friction-reducing hull coatings, energy-e cient lighting, sensors that monitor operations and provide recommendations to boost e ciency, shore connection technology for emissions-free port stays and carbon capture systems that promise significant reductions in vessel emissions.”

The EU Innovation Fund

HEMEXPO members have further solutions in the pipeline, Ms Polychronopoulou adds, but their high cost in terms of research and development as well as production will require external financing, for which the association has turned to the European Union’s Innovation Fund. “The recovery of energy from the operation of the vessel with di erent technologies is one avenue we are exploring,” she says. “Another is working with DNV to create a framework that will allow our members to classify the products they manufacture as ‘environmentally sustainable’ and ‘energy saving’.”

Ms Polychronopoulou is a strong advocate for the adoption and deployment of novel technology in decarbonising the shipping industry. In February 2022, the Cruise Lines International Association and SEA Europe, where Ms Polychronopoulou serves as Vice Chair, issued a joint call for the maritime technology industry to be recognised as an integral part of the European Commission’s Green Deal Industrial Plan. The Green Deal promotes the “scaling-up of the EU’s manufacturing capacity for the net-zero technologies and products required to meet Europe’s ambitious climate targets”.

SEA Europe

SEA Europe, the Shipyards’ and Maritime Equipment Association of Europe is dedicated to promoting the interests of the European maritime technology sector at the highest level. In addition to calling for the industry’s inclusion in the Green Deal, the association has developed proposals for several policies that it hopes will establish more favourable operating conditions for the sector – and create the kind of conditions that have helped China and South Korea to thrive as shipbuilding hubs.

“Among these proposals,” says Ms Polychronopoulou, “are tax breaks for shipyards and marine equipment manufacturers, flexibility in the application of the OECD Guidelines on financing ship exports, the strengthening of the EU regulation on maritime cabotage and the

drafting of guidelines on state aid in maritime transport.” Greater support will also be needed in addressing the maritime workforce shortage – a particularly apparent issue in Greece, where, according to Ms Polychronopoulou, “a large percentage of young people are choosing other sectors, leaving us lacking in specialised personnel.”

To tackle this issue, HEMEXPO plans to develop a programme to attract new recruits – primarily technicians, automation electricians and sales engineers – by combining educational opportunities with compensation and bonus-based incentives for staying in the industry. However, given the scale of the challenge, Ms Polychronopoulou acknowledges that attracting and equipping professionals with the necessary skills will require organised moves from governing bodies.

“Nevertheless, the revival of Greek shipbuilding is a promising development, and if the maritime technology sector can secure the financial and regulatory backing it needs, the outlook for the wider European market will be overwhelmingly positive,” she concludes.

habitat system that was designed and built for the first time in 1991 to carry out repair work on locks.

Development of the co erdam technology

Hydrex was the first company ever to use a prefabricated co erdam, introduced as early as 1979 and used to carry out repairs to the m/v Lunar Venture. By 1983, the technology was in use to perform insert repairs in double bottom tanks. The company has advanced this concept extensively over the last 30 years, along with the technology to ensure that fast, professional and high-quality work can be done while the vessel is in-situ and even while continuing normal ship

operations. For its innovative work in this field Hydrex won the 2002 Lloyd’s List SMM Award in the category of ‘Innovation in Naval Shipbuilding and Marine Technology.’ Hydrex continues to invest in the research necessary to keep evolving the available repair techniques along with continual training and development of its engineers and diver/technicians. This is done to o er customers the most e cient solution, whether the required services involve the inspection of a vessel’s external condition and any required maintenance work or highly technical major repairs and replacements of a ship’s external underwater equipment and machinery.

Recent operations on sister vessels in Denmark

Recently Hydrex diver/technicians carried out scrubber overboard pipe repairs on two ships in Munkebo, Denmark. In total seven corroded pipes were repaired. On five pipes the corroded areas of the scrubber pipes were ground out and rewelded. The pipes were then protected with Ecospeed, a chemically resistant coating produced by Subsea Industries. The same protection was given to the two new pipes that were installed.

pipes of the scrubber which can result in water ingress if not handled quickly enough.

Replacement and repairs

A 295m LNG carrier needed maintenance and repair work carried out at the Fayard shipyard in Munkebo, Denmark. Hydrex was asked to perform repairs on three scrubber overboard pipes while the ship was berthed at the yard.

A team travelled to the vessel’s location. After arriving at the ship on one of yard’s workboats they first performed an inspection of the damaged areas on both the waterside and the onboard side of the hull.

This revealed that two of the pipes needed to be completely replaced. As the corrosion on the third scrubber overboard pipe was not yet severe, a full replacement was not needed.

Because of the location of the damaged parts of the pipes, welding work on the inside shell plating of the hull was needed. As a result, the outside of the overboards could not be sealed o with a simple patch. Custom co erdams were designed and constructed at the Hydrex workshop.

After the installation of the co erdams, the team cut away the old pipes. The shell plating was then prepared for the installation of the replacement part. New pipes had also been constructed at the company’s workshop in Antwerp. The

pipes were then positioned and secured with a full penetration weld. Next an independent inspector carried out NDT testing of the welding work. The diver/welders then sealed o the outlet of the final overboard pipe. The team ground away the corroded area before rebuilding it back to its original thickness.

When the welding was complete the surface was cleaned and a Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) was carried out by an independent inspector.

Lasting corrosion protection

To prevent both the new and the repaired pipes from corroding, the inside was coated with Ecospeed. This product is produced by Hydrex’s sister company Subsea Industries. Ecospeed is highly chemically resistant. Considering the nature of the process taking place inside a scrubber, this is essential for lasting protection of the pipe. Ecospeed should also be used to protect a newly installed scrubber system from day one.

A month later the LNG ship’s sister vessel came to the yard and Hydrex was once again asked to perform an inspection and any needed repair of the scrubber overboard pipes.

Luckily the corrosion on the scrubber overboard pipes of this vessel was less severe. A full replacement of the four pipes was not needed.

The diver/welders repaired the pipes using the same procedure as on the first ship. The inside of these pipes was also coated with Ecospeed to keep them safe from further corrosion.

On 1 February, Trailing suction hopper dredger Teunis Huibertus, a Beagle® 4, was handed over to contractor Gebr. van der Lee, a Dutch contractor active in the Dutch dredging market, after a successful sea trial in mid-January. The Beagle® 4 belongs to the series of standard medium-sized trailing suction hopper dredgers from IHC Dredging, which are equipped with the latest innovations and state-of-the-art dredging equipment.

Sustainable fleet expansion

For Gebr. van der Lee, the ecological footprint of their new trailing suction hopper dredger was an important selection criterion. Rijkswaterstaat, the client of many Dutch dredging projects, focuses on the use of cleaner dredgers. That is why Gebr. van der Lee wanted to be convinced that the new trailing suction hopper dredger scores well on the environmental cost indicator, a

critical success factor for winning tenders. IHC Dredging has succeeded in doing that because of its best-in-class fuel e ciency with adequate low greenhouse gas emissions of the Beagle® and because they meet the IMO Tier III emission standards.

Autonomous dredging with the Beagle®

The Teunis Huibertus is already equipped with an extended automation package of IHC Dredging including the automatic dredge pump controller and trail speed controller. However IHC Dredging is pushing the limits to

Innovation never rests

Liebherr and ISO Limited have been building on a long partnership to drive innovation in New Zealand’s forestry industry.

The outreach began in 2018, and after careful planning and due diligence, the delivery of MHCs and SMAG grabs have been operating since 2020. The delivery is considered a ‘lighthouse project’ that other locations

are analysing to expand and improve their own operations.

The LHM 550 has a 51m lifting height and an outreach of 54m. The electrichydraulic grapples feature a world-first in

terms of size and capacity at 35t and 9.0m2, respectively.

industry in New Zealand and demonstrates Liebherr’s commitment to delivering innovative solutions that drive e ciency and safety in maritime operations. The project began in mid2018. Following customer meetings in Tauranga and Gisborne, Liebherr had a clearer picture of the project’s requirements.

In September 2019, a customer meeting was held at the Liebherr Rostock manufacturing plant, with the first test of the SMAG electric-hydraulic grapples, and a contract was signed for four LHM 550 and six SMAG timber grabs. A crane simulator to assist with training of crane operators was also part of the purchase for Tauranga.

Rolldock Sun

In January 2020, a successful second grab test was completed with a new bucket design, and production of the six

grabs was released. By Q1 2020, the crane simulator had been delivered and installed at the customer’s site. In mid-July 2020, the four fully assembled LHM 550 mobile harbour cranes and six timber grabs were loaded onto the ship Rolldock Sun and arrived in Tauranga in early September 2020.

In addition, a further contract was signed for two more LHM 550 and three more SMAG timber grabs. They arrived at Eastland Port – Gisborne November 2021. All units have been handed over to the customer and are in operation. Turnover has been increased by as much as 35%. A ‘lighthouse project’ for one of New Zealand’s leading industries “The new MHCs have significantly changed the way logs are loaded in New Zealand and most importantly are a significant step-change to our current practices, improving both safety and productivity,” states Paul Cameron, Director and CEO at

ISOLimited. Not only has this project opened up great potential for further shipments with ISO, but other companies have also expressed interest. The concept of more e cient and safer ways of handling timber is proving to be an attractive option for many.

Forestry

Forestry is a significant industry in New Zealand, contributing to an annual export revenue of around USD 6.8billion, 1.6% of New Zealand’s GDP, and to the employment of around 35,000 people in production, processing, and commercialisation. Innovations in this field are therefore of great relevance to many people, and Liebherr and its partners will continue to collaborate closely on forward-looking options to support safe and e cient ways of operating in the timber industry.

Vertom Cyta

The Vertom Group, one of the leading short sea shipping operators within Europe, recently announced the successful launch and christening of their latest vessel, MV Vertom Cyta.

The vessel was built at Thecla Bodewes Shipyards. She is the second of eight vessels being constructed at the yard facility in Kampen, The Netherlands. MV Vertom Cyta is named after Cyta de Jong, wife of Vertom CEO Arjan de Jong.

The MV Vertom Cyta features a dieselelectric propulsion system, which o ers superior e ciency and reduced emissions, making it a more sustainable

option for shipping operations. The vessel has been designed to meet the highest environmental standards, while also providing the highest levels of performance and reliability. With a length of 118.60m and breadth of 14.30m, the vessel is tailor-made for providing competitive shippingsolutions for Vertom’s clients.

Setting sail for the Arctic

On 4 May, SH Diana, Swan Hellenic’s third purpose-designed expedition cruise ship went on her way to Tromsø for an eleven-day cruise of ord exploration that opened her Arctic season before she voyages worldwide.

Complying with the latest environmental regulations, SH Diana is completely selfsu cient for up to 40 days or 8,000nm, and equipped with exhaust gas cleaning, advanced wastewater treatment systems and the waste storage facilities required for operating in sensitive polar areas. Moreover, preparations have been made to implement zero-emission battery technology, which would also make it possible to operate silently in ports, marine reserves, and other sensitive natural areas.

Providing spacious 5-star accommodation for 192 guests in 96spacious staterooms and suites, the vast majority with large balconies, SH Diana is operated by an onboard team of 141 to provide the highest levels of personal service.

Norway explored

SH Diana departed Amsterdam on the cultural expedition cruise “Norway Explored,” an eleven-day odyssey through the ords that has reach Tromsø, Norway, on 14 May 2022. Dr Terje Leiren will be accompanying the maiden cultural expedition cruise throughout, sharing his expert knowledge, insights and company with the guests on board. Mr Leiren is Professor Emeritus of Scandinavian Studies and History at the University of Washington, Seattle, and was the University’s first holder of the Sverre Arestad Endowed Chair in Norwegian Studies (2007-2017). He gained his Ph.D. in history at the University of North Texas and taught at the University of Oslo before joining the University of Washington in 1977. He served as CoGeneral Editor of the University of Washington Press book series, “New Directions in Scandinavian Studies”, and is the author of four books and over

40academic articles on Scandinavian history. He has also contributed to several television documentary programmes broadcast on PBS and the History Channel on topics ranging from the Vikings to World War II. At the conclusion of the naming ceremony Valerie Ann Wilson commented, “I really am so proud to be godmother to this wonderful new ship. Partnering up for a green future

The German Ferry operator is taking steps towards achieving its vision of a green future by partnering with Damen Shipyards, one of the world’s leading shipbuilders, for the design and construction. The fully electric vessel will transport passengers fast, clean and comfortable thanks to EST-Floattech’s battery system.

The ferry will operate between Norddeich and the island of Norderney, which required Damen to develop a completely new vessel: the Damen Electric Fast Ferry (EFF) 3209 – known as the E-Cat Ferry. A standard vessel was impossible due to the shallow waters in which the ferry must operate. Secondly, the ferry will sail seven times a day, for which the vessel’s draft is limited to a maximum of 1.2m. A challenge for which Damen found a solution.

Fast charging

The fleet of Reederei Norden-Frisia will be extended with this 32m long, fully electric catamaran. The E-Cat Ferry can carry up to 150 passengers. With the EST-Floattech High Energy Octopus

Series battery system, the ferry can reach speeds of up to 16kn and can charge within half an hour.

EST-Floattech sized the battery system after calculating performance and lifetime data, based on the specified load profile of this vessel. The electrical installation of the vessel will be provided by system integrator Royal van der Leun, with whom EST-Floattech has had previous successful collaborations. The battery system is Lloyd’s Register type approved and the new ferry will sail under Lloyd’s Register classification.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Damen Shipyards expressed its delight in partnering with EST-Floattech on this state of the art fully electric ferry: “We are very excited about this project, which is a significant step towards Damen’s goal of reducing the environmental footprint of our vessels while maintaining optimal performance with EST-Floattech’s Lithium-Ion cells.”

Gorinchem for outfitting. The vessel is scheduled for delivery to Norden-Frisia in May 2024. We can expect the demand for this type of vessel to grow as more passengers are consciously looking to contribute to the energy transition.

Lloyd’s Register and Bureau Veritas Type Approval

Recently, EST-Floattech announced that its Octopus Series Battery System has received Lloyd’s Register and Bureau Veritas Type Approval for maritime applications. The Type Approval of Lloyd’s Register was issued on 17 April, 2023. Bureau Veritas issued the Type Approval for the Octopus Series last Monday, 8 May. The first projects for this newly designed and assembled marine Energy Storage System are already being delivered.

Both Lloyd’s Register and Bureau Veritas witnessed the rigorous tests that ESTFloattech conducted on the Octopus Series Battery System to ensure its compliance with the latest industry standards and regulations. The large and experienced classification societies approved the tests performed and showed by granting marine Type Approval that the safety and performance of the system meet their standards. For EST-Floattech, receiving Lloyd’s Register and Bureau Veritas Type Approvals are milestones.

EST-Floattech, which both develops and manufactures the Octopus Series Battery System, is proud to receive this Type Approval from Bureau Veritas and Lloyd’s Register. “We are glad that our ‘safe by design’ mentality has been recognised through this Lloyd’s Register and Bureau Veritas Type Approval for Maritime Battery Systems,” says Diederick Stam, CTO at EST-Floattech. “This achievement reinforces our commitment to providing the safest and most reliable battery systems to the maritime industry.”

O shore decarbonisation goals

Marine Type Approval for a battery system from respected organizations such as DNV, Bureau Veritas, and Lloyd’s Register is important for shipowners and shipbuilders to ensure that the products they are considering meet the highest standards in the industry. As neutral third-party organizations, Lloyd’s Register, Bureau Veritas, and DNV conduct independent and impartial assessments of maritime equipment and systems. With the Type Approval they assign to a product, in this case the Octopus Series of EST-Floattech, a buyer of a product with Type Approval will know that the product is certified to be placed on board their vessels according to the highest maritime standards.

Coastline Care

In Early May, a unique situation occurred o the coast of Zeeland, the Netherlands. Van Oord’s two newest identical trailing suction hopper dredgers Vox Ariane and Vox Apolonia were working together to reinforce the coastline, both powered by the sustainable fuel LNG.

The project concerns beach nourishment works along the Dutch coast. These works are part of the Netherlands’ Coastline Care programme of Rijkswaterstaat, the executive agency of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, intended to reinforce the Dutch coast. Van Oord’s scope includes beach- and trench wall replenishment at the Westkapelse Zeedijk, Oostgat and Nieuwvliet-Groede in the province of Zeeland.

During beach replenishment, sand is pumped to the beach by a trailing

suction hopper dredger via a pipeline. Applying this replenishment method allows us to stabilise the coastline, protecting coastal communities and infrastructure. The trench wall replenishment method means that we fill parts of the channel just o the coast, the Oostgat, with sand. If it becomes less deep, the current can carry less sand and the coast stays in place longer. In

total, approximately 4million m3 of sand will be applied.

Net-zero emissions

What makes this project extra special is that Vox Ariane and Vox Apolonia are running on LNG during the project execution, a more sustainable alternative for Marine Gas Oil (MGO), free of sulphur and particulates. The combustion

process is also di erent to that of MGO, resulting in far less nitrogen dioxide being emitted. Switching to this kind of alternative sources of fuel for their fleet will help Van Oord to achieve its netzero emissions targets by 2050, in line with the Paris Agreement.

Three LNG-powered trailing suction hopper dredgers

Vox Apolonia and Vox Ariane are part of a series of three brand new trailing suction hopper dredgers that have been added to the Van Oord fleet. The third sister vessel Vox Alexia will be christened in September of this year.

We featured an article on the christening of Vox Apolonia in the previous edition of ShipBuilding Industry and we will continue to follow the developments of these new state-of-the-art dredgers for you.

These vessels will help Van Oord to further modernise its fleet, making it more innovative and energy e cient. Their LNG fuel system and energy-e cient design will reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions substantially. It is precisely for this reason that the three vessels were presented with the Dutch Maritime KVNR Shipping Award in 2022. According to the jury, Van Oord’s introduction of the three vessels marks it as ‘a trailblazer for international standards aimed at minimising climate and environmental impact within the available technological capabilities’.

Next steps towards delivery in 2025

Volvo Penta is carrying out in-house development to ensure thorough in-water testing using its own passenger highspeed ferry test boat, strategically located near its marine test facility in Gothenburg, Sweden. Rigorous testing is in progress to ensure the durability and performance of the propulsion package, with field tests in an o shore-energy crew transfer vessel serving as the subsequent phase leading up to the anticipated 2025 delivery.

Another new member of the Quantum Engineering Team is Francisco Miguel Montero who joins as a Research Naval Architect. Most recently, he was Senior Project Manager Seakeeping at the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) in Wageningen, The Netherlands. In MrMontero’s nine years at the MARIN and four years at INTA model basin in Madrid, he gained extensive experience in the field of ship motions. Furthermore, he helped to define the hydrofoil research strategy and developed new methods to evaluate active stabilisation systems at anchor.
