Two new powerful salvage tugs

Kongsberg Maritime has won a contract to provide the design and equipment for two powerful salvage tugs being built by Alexandria Shipyard as main contractor on behalf of the Suez Canal Authority. The tugs will be based on Kongsberg Maritime’s UT 722 CDT Design. The UT 722 tugboat design has a length of 71.6m, bollard pull of approximately 200t, and it can operate independently for up to 35 days. Egypt’s Alexandria Shipyard successfully bid on this signifcant contract with the Suez Canal Authority in cooperation with Kongsberg Maritime, which is providing technical support including vessel design, main equipment deliveries, maintenance systems, and crew training.

CONTACT Software researches new technologies

Eight partners from fve countries share the goal of strengthening European shipyards in global competition. Based on CONTACT Elements, they will develop a new platform that digitises shipbuilding end-to-end and makes it more efcient. The EU is funding the research project through its innovation program Horizon Europe. In the Smart European Shipbuilding (SEUS) project, shipyards, universities, and software manufacturers are bundling their expertise to raise shipbuilding in Europe to a new efciency level. Their ambitious goal is to reduce development and assembly times by 30% and 20% through a collaboration platform.

Damen Marine Components supplies complete steering system

Ship repair company De Gerlien van Tiem and Damen Marine

Components have signed a contract for a rudder and steering system during maritime exhibition Maritime Industry in Gorinchem. The two companies will once again build a tanker for VDO Maritiem. The barge is expected to be delivered in Q2/2024. The newbuild vessel, to be named MTS Valentino, is based on the innovative, Shallow Draft MoneyMaker 3.0 design by RensenDriessen Shipbuilding, which is also building the hull. De Gerlien van Tiem is responsible for the complete outftting, commissioned by VDO Maritiem. DMC will supply the electric-hydraulic control system, four HD profle rudders and a matching rudder drive. In addition, VDO Maritiem has opted for an RMS – an active rotor manoeuvring system that demonstrably improves safety and control of the vessel in unloaded condition.

MOL goes live with Marlink smart hybrid network solution

Marlink, the smart network and digital solutions company, is enabling Japanese shipping Company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) to evaluate the impact of LEO Internet services on business sustainability and crew welfare. Under an agreement struck at the end of 2022, the leading Japanese shipping company will assess past, present and future user experiences and explore access how Internet access can contribute to the company’s crew recruitment and retention strategy, using the lowlatency Starlink service within Marlink’s smart hybrid network solution.

MOL is using Starlink’s LEO solution onboard its feet of car carriers to provide an additional layer of high-speed connectivity across its feet, which Marlink has combined with Sealink VSAT and L-band backup to create a next-generation hybrid network solution, controlled and monitored by Marlink’s XChange management platform.

Brittany Ferries selects RINA’s SERTICA as Preferred Fleet Management System

WinGD and AET sign collaboration agreement

Swiss marine power company WinGD has entered into a collaboration agreement with ship owner and operator AET and maritime academy Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM), both part of MISC Group, to develop technology and training for ammonia engines. The agreement will see the partners work towards the potential introduction of X-DF-A ammonia-fuelled engines on vessels which would be among the frst ammonia dual-fuelled tankers in the world. The project timeframe is in line with WinGD’s previously announced roadmap, bringing the frst engines for Suezmax or Aframax tankers into service from 2025.

25 additional tankers

Teekay Tankers has signed agreements to equip 25 additional tankers with Yara Marine’s propulsion optimisation technology FuelOpt. The order follows the installation and evaluation of FuelOpt onboard Zenith Spirit in 2021, followed by a further three vessels in 2022. Teekay placed the new orders in Q1 and Q2 2023 after having confrmed that the use of FuelOpt onboard four of their vessels, operating with steady shaft power, resulted in fuel savings and emissions reductions of 3-5% through 2022. The additional investment is a key component in Teekay’s planned strategy for greater sustainability and ESG performance across their feet, allowing them to work proactively towards the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) goal of halving greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050.

Chartering two next-generation installation vessels

Jan De Nul Group has signed an agreement with RWE, a German energy provider, for the long-term chartering of two next-generation installation vessels for future ofshore wind foundation and turbine construction. The charters are supported by a Service Agreement through which Jan De Nul Group will provide both in-house and market solutions and services, to support and perform installation campaigns for RWE’s ofshore wind projects. The partnership includes the exclusive and long-term charter of the two nextgeneration ofshore installation vessels Les Alizés and Voltaire. Both can be used at RWE’s current and future ofshore construction projects and, if needed, to run maintenance campaigns at its existing ofshore wind farm portfolio.

Full propulsion packages from SCHOTTEL

The series of four Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOVs) built by the Norwegian VARD Group will be powered by full propulsion packages from SCHOTTEL. The package per vessel consists of two SCHOTTEL Dynamic RudderPropellers type SRP 460 D, one SCHOTTEL Retractable RudderPropeller type SRP 380 R, and two SCHOTTEL TransverseThrusters type STT 5. With these new vessels, Edda Wind, the Norwegian pure-play operator in the ofshore wind industry, will signifcantly expand its feet, especially given the option for 2+2 more ships in addition to the four ordered. The vessels have been designed by VARD Design in Ålesund, Norway in cooperation with and exclusively for Edda Wind. They feature VARD’s new hull form for optimized seakeeping abilities and low fuel

Yara Marine and Veracity sign agreement

Yara Marine has signed an agreement with DNV’s independent industry cloud platform Veracity that will allow users of Yara Marine’s Fleet Analytics performance management and reporting tool to harness the power of the Veracity platform and DNV’s data verifcation services. The integrated partnership agreement, signed at Nor-Shipping, will enable the transfer of real-time operational data directly to Veracity on a daily basis, ensuring that data for compliance reporting can be quality assured and prepared for DNV’s verifcation services. The integration will empower Yara Marine customers to proactively meet the continuous improvement component of the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), and will also fulfll the requirements of the EU’s Monitoring, Reporting, and Verifcation (MRV) regulation.

Green Shore Power

HEMEXPO and DNV sign agreement

Hellenic Marine Equipment Manufacturers and Exporters – a leading suppliers and exporters association for the international shipping sector, has reached an agreement with the world’s leading classifcation society, DNV, for the assessment of energy-saving devices (ESDs) produced by HEMEXPO member companies. Under the terms of the agreement, in the frst instance, DNV will review a makers list provided by HEMEXPO to identify ESDs that fall in the category of energy saving devices, according to DNV expertise. In the second step, DNV will assess which regulatory metrics – i.e., the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and the Energy Efciency

Existing Ship Index (EEXI) – the relevant ESDs afect. Finally, the classifcation society will issue a letter of professional opinion for the HEMEXPO products that fall into the ESD category.

RST and Samskip are proud to announce the successful launch of their Green Shore Power initiative, which aims to dramatically reduce CO2 emissions produced by vessels docked by providing new clean shore powered energy solutions. The joint initiative is an example of what companies can do if they have a common goal and join forces in the energy transition towards CO2 neutrality. The shore power solution is the frst of its kind for a container terminal in the Netherlands ports. The celebration of this milestone event was on Friday, July 21st, where delegations from Samskip, RST, Port of Rotterdam (HBR), Municipality of Rotterdam and HES gathered. During the celebration, “Samskip Innovator” provided an onsite demonstration of the smooth transition between ship power and the new shore power.

Joining forces

Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA), VPLP Design (VPLP) and Alwena Shipping (Alwena) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to form an Alliance. In this partnership, LDA will identify, develop, and pursue selected logistics solutions operated by wind assisted/propelled pure container ships designed and developed by VPLP and Alwena.

Louis Dreyfus Armateurs’ subsidiary Louis Dreyfus Freight Solutions (LDFS), a 3PL freight forwarder with strong knowledge and skills in transport and logistics involving specifc maritime solutions, has called on VPLP Design and Alwena Shipping to develop a wind assisted/propelled container ship solution. It is based on the Trade Wings 2,500 – an innovative concept for ‘small-size’ container ships of 2,500TEU.

With an overall length of 197m and a

breadth of 32m, the vessel ofers a deadweight of 32,500t. Suitable to short sea shipping operations or feedering in Europe, Central America, Caribbean Islands and China, the Trade Wings 2,500 can also operate on transatlantic trades and be tailored to meet the Clients’ requirements and volumes. The preliminary project which has been granted an approval in principle (AiP) by Bureau Veritas runs on a hybrid propulsion comprising of six wing sails and a diesel-electric system. It is also

designed to burn clean fuels such as liquefed natural gas (LNG) or methanol.

Low emissions container vessels of the near future

On a typical transatlantic voyage, we can expect to save on average 35% CO2equivalent emissions compared to a conventional design, with a 2-stroke engine, single shaft and without wingsails, at the same speed. This concept sets the pathway for what could be the low emissions container vessels

Something diferent every time

Kooiman Marine Group delivers custom designed and built dredger HEGEMANN V to Hegemann-Reiners Gruppe.

When it needed to replace one of the trailing suction hopper dredgers (TSHDs) in its feet, Bremen-based Hegemann-Reiners Gruppe had a specifc set of requirements. With this, the company needed the services of a shipyard that could ofer it a design 100% tailored to its operational needs.

Hegemann-Reiners Gruppe had never worked with Kooiman Marine Group in Zwijndrecht before. The two companies had only recently got to know one another when Ron Verschoor, responsible for business development at Kooiman, paid a visit to Detlef Hegemann’s Technical Manager Martin Janssen.

Creating the vessel the client wants

“Soon after, they approached us with a request for a new dredger, with a specifc set of requirements,” Ron explains. “Delivering custom vessels is what we do – every time it’s something diferent. We always aim to design in close cooperation with the end user to

create the vessel they require for their operations. And we have our own inhouse engineering company, Kooiman Engineering, that was able to design a dredger tailored to Detlef Hegemann’s wishes.”

Martin agrees by saying, “This was very important for us. Kooiman came with a proposal that was completely tailored to

us. They didn’t tell us how to do it, they did it exactly as we wanted.”

A versatile & fexible dredger

What the contractor was looking for was a relatively small dredger to perform the primary function of river and port maintenance in harbours such as Bremerhaven and Emden. However, they

were also looking for something fexible to maximise uptime. This required a dredger that could also undertake shore replenishment operations in the Baltic and North seas when not conducting maintenance operations and to supply materials inland.

The result was the recently delivered HEGEMANN V, a 70 x 15.80m dredger

with a hopper volume of 1,500m3 (sand) and 1,930m3 (slick). The dredger features 4,890ekW total installed power and is able to sail at speeds of up to 10 knots. It features accommodation for 8 + 2 persons.

“We’ve got some experience in diferent kinds of dredgers,” says Ron. “In the past, we built a large aggregate dredger, water injection dredgers, and we converted cargo vessels into dredgers to mention just a few examples. This project, however, represented a diferent section of the dredging market. We were very keen to show our capabilities here so were very pleased to be presented with this opportunity.”

Integrating redundancy

In addition to versatility, HegemannReiners Gruppe wanted to ensure the workability of the dredger by integrating considerable redundancy. “One of the redundancy items is the second dredge pump, required to be able to deliver the dredging material over a long distance. We added an extra dredge pipe, a bypass so that the dredger can continue to operate in the event of a failure on one of the pumps. Also installed is an extra generator set to ensure safety, reliability, and the capability to operate in remote areas. In addition to these items, there is a spare thruster unit that can replace the PS or the SB thruster. We designed these thrusters to be easily exchangeable while the vessel is still in the water.”

Optimising efciency

The 1,630ekW Mitsubishi generators additionally feature a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment system to help reduce NOX emissions, thereby

ensuring the dredger’s compliance with IMO Tier III requirements. Maarten Kooiman, director Kooiman Engineering and in lead for the development and production of the HEGEMANN V says, “These engines run on pre-defned operation modes. The efciency they ofer comes from their ability to run at lower frequencies when less power is needed. This way they run fuel efcient and efcient for the aftertreatment system.

“This vessel is designed to load sand at a volume of 1,500m3. With this load she will have a draft of 4.5m. As we had to cope with restrictions in the size of the dredger for manoeuvring in narrow locations and on rivers, we had to design the hull form from scratch. Keeping the required speed in mind, we aimed for maximum load of dredging

material. To optimise the hull form we used CFD calculations to decrease resistance and, thereby, fuel consumption. The hull and hopper compartment are also optimised for loading as much as possible slick, which ended up being 1,930m3.”

During a specifc operation, the dredger requires to dock frequently at the delivery site. To save time, increase safety and decrease fuel consumption during docking, the HEGEMANN V is equipped with two telescopic spud poles designed and produced by Kooiman.

Dredging system

The dredging system features one suction tube ø600mm with an active visor drag head, to dredge the material from max 26m depth. The drag head wire runs over a swell compensator to

compensate the vertical movement of the vessel in relation to the seabed.

Loading of the hopper is done via three hopper loading pipes and water on the loading is removed via two in height adjustable overfows. This vessel is equipped with two pre dumping doors to be able to dump material at shallow draft.

Once the vessel is partly unloaded and draft decreased, she will use the six dumping doors to relieve the rest of the dredging material. In addition, HEGEMANN V is equipped with a selfemptying system. The hopper load is fuidised with a high pressurized jet water system and via six suction lines the material is pumped with one or two dredge pumps in series, to one of the discharge points on deck. discharge point is a bow coupling type, to which a foating line can be connected, or the material is sprayed via a nozzle on, for instance, a beach.

When dredging in slick material, possible gasses are removed in front of the dredge pump via a degassing system, to maintain the efciency of the dredge pump. The rpm of both dredge pumps are stepless, controllable with the use of frequency drives.

When it comes to maintenance the whole vessel is designed and equipped to be able to maintain its equipment. As an example, the pump room is equipped with an overhead crane and several cranes are located at deck level to exchange parts and stores to shore.

Dutch maritime hub

The hull of the dredger was constructed in Serbia before being transported to the Gebr. Kooiman shipyard in the

Netherlands for outftting. Once it had arrived, the diversity of skills within the Kooiman Marine Group once again proved useful, with Kooiman able to perform much of the work in-house. This included the full installation of the dredger’s interior as well as the construction and installation of all auxiliary piping being designed with 3D CAD software and prefabricated within the Kooiman piping workshop.

“Naturally we work with any suppliers that our clients wish,” states Maarten “However, we enjoy reliable relationships with the companies here in the Dutch maritime hub who are frequently, as on this occasion, able to rapidly supply us with the equipment and systems we need to design and build vessels according to our clients’ needs.”

A good match

The HEGEMANN V was baptised on 14 June at Bremerhaven after being

deployed for maintenance dredging on the river Ems since the beginning of this year. So far, the dredger has performed exactly as the contractor had anticipated.

Martin says, “ We already saw during the trials that the dredger was performing beyond expectations. Since we started operations, this has continued to be the case. We made the right decision in going to Kooiman. Our two companies are a good match for one another. Communications have been and continue to be excellent. As a result, there has never been an issue during development or construction that we were not able to resolve by talking to each other and fnding an appropriate technical solution.”

New patrol vessels for Senegalese Navy

The launch of NIANI, the second ofshore patrol vessel destined for the Senegalese Navy, took place in late 2022 in Concarneau. This stage marked a signifcant step in the progress of the programme for the supply of three ofshore patrol vessels.

In parallel, the frst unit has fnished the outftting phase and went on its sea trials, and in May of this year the third vessel, named CAYOR has been launched as well. The contract for the vessels was signed in November 2019 by Senegal’s Ministry of Armed Forces and Piriou group.

Built with the support and expertise of its partner company Kership, the programme of construction of these three patrol vessels is spread over a period of 44 months, until summer 2024. It also includes a support period lasting several years in Senegal.

Vincent Faujour, Chairman of Piriou Group says, “The launch of NIANI was an important event for this boat but also

more broadly for the OPV58S programme! Thanks to the motivation of the Piriou and Kership personnel and the continuous working partnership with the representatives of the Senegalese Naval Staf, we are progressing according to schedule.”

The OPV58S (Ofshore Patrol Vessel) is a robust 62m patrol vessel with outstanding versatility and high endurance. The OPV58S is dedicated to missions such as surveillance, identifcation and intervention, and fulfls the entire range of missions related to law enforcement. In addition to her deployment ability -intervention RHIBsshe possesses a frst rank deterrence capacity thanks to her anti-surface and anti-aircraft weapon systems. Among innovations and major capacities, the vessel features:

• A versatile design to adapt to various missions

• A large panoramic bridge with 360° visibility

• A fast launching and recovery system for 2 RHIBs on the stern ramp

• A C-Sharp® hull for optimised autonomy and seakeeping

• A high-performance monitoring and combat system

These OPVs will be equipped with MARTE MK2/N anti-ship missiles. With the ability to strike at ranges in excess of 30km and their fre-and-forget capability, these missiles will provide the means to the Senegalese Navy to enforce their maritime superiority. The vessels will also beneft from the SIMBAD-RC system and its MISTRAL missiles- this combination providing an extremely efective defence capability against all threats including anti-ship missiles, combat aircraft, UAVs, helicopters, as well as small surface threats such as those presented by FIACs. From the Dutch coast to the Yangtze river

Whether it’s dredging, infrastructure, or ofshore energy, Van Oord has not been sitting still in the past months. Let’s have a look at some of the company’s recent interesting projects.

On 21 July 2023, Van Oord has completed installing and burying inter-array cables at CrossWind’s Hollandse Kust Noord ofshore wind park, bringing it a step closer to being fully operational by the end of this year. The cables are used for connecting the ofshore wind turbines and transmitting electricity. Van Oord’s top duo cable-laying vessel Nexus and trencher Dig-It (a remotely-operated vehicle operated from vessel Subsea Viking) have installed a web of 69 interarray cables measuring 140km in total. The ofshore wind park is located 18.5km of the coast of the Netherlands, near

the seaside resort of Egmond aan Zee. Van Oord designed a 66kV inter-array grid for the Hollandse Kust Noord ofshore wind park, to guarantee reliable and safe transmission of the generated electricity. Dutch manufacturer TKF (Twentsche Kabelfabriek) supplied the cables. Nexus, equipped with a large 5,000t capacity cable carousel, installed the inter-array cables. Trencher Dig-It subsequently buried the cables to the required depth of between 1.0 and 1.5m.

The Dig-It, a Tracked Remotely Operated Vehicle (TROV), can be used for burying cables both in ‘jetting mode’ for sandy soils and in ‘chain cutter mode’ for

harder soils. At the Hollandse Kust Noord project, both modes were used successfully.

Balance of Plant

Wind park developer Crosswind, a joint venture between Shell and Eneco, contracted Van Oord for the complete Balance of Plant scope for the construction of the ofshore wind park. As a Balance of Plant contractor, Van Oord’s activities encompass the design, engineering, procurement and transport and installation of the wind turbine foundations, inter-array cables, as well as the transport and installation of the

wind turbines themselves. Earlier this year, Van Oord completed the installation of all 70 monopile foundations for the wind park. Currently, Van Oord is deploying two ofshore installation vessels to install the wind turbine generators and is also performing the electrical termination works of the cables in the wind turbine generators.

Green energy

While construction is still in full swing, the Hollandse Kust Noord ofshore wind park already produced its frst megawatt hours (MWh) of green electricity and

delivered it to the Dutch mainland. In the coming months, production capacity will be constantly increased. Once fnished, the wind park will have a total installed capacity of 759MW, generating at least 3.3TWh per year. This is enough renewable electricity to meet 2.8% of the Netherlands’ electricity demand.

Tug quay project

Another milestone at Van Oord is that, after this summer, the Van Oord –Hakkers – De Klerk consortium will commence construction of a tug quay in the Port of Rotterdam’s Yangtze Canal. The consortium and the Port of Rotterdam Authority signed the relevant contracts at the end of June. The work will involve constructing 500m of quay wall with space for 12 tugs to berth. The project is scheduled to be completed in spring 2025.

Van Oord, Hakkers and De Klerk will construct the new tug quay at the entrance to the canal on the south side, close to the largest container terminals. In addition to the 500m of quay wall, which will take the form of a composite wall, the consortium is also responsible for removing the existing bed and bank protection, installing new bed protection and dredging approximately 800,000m2 of sand and clay to widen the canal and clear space for the new quay.

Yangtze Canal

Marine transport is the backbone of international trade and the global economy. To accommodate the growing volume of trafc, ports and waterways must be expanded and maintained. The Yangtze Canal is the access channel to various Port of Rotterdam container terminals, including those in Prinses Amaliahaven, Prinses Arianehaven and Prinses Alexiahaven. The Yangtze Canal

welcomes the largest container ships travelling to and from terminals in the Maasvlakte 2 section of the port.

Construction of tug quay is part of a programme to widen the Yangtze Canal so that it can accommodate more trafc and the latest generation of container ships.

The decision to award the contract to this particular consortium is in line with the

When the Scottish fshermen from Lunar Fishing sail out on week-long trips in the North Sea and the Atlantic, they sail on ships built by Danish Karstensens Shipyard and with CP-propulsion equipment, propellers, and thrusters from Danish Hundested Propeller.

Harsh weather and high seas require hardy fshermen and boats alike. Lunar Fishing, which has been hailing from Peterhead, Scotland, for many years, knows this better than most. The experienced fshermen often spend their fshing time in the North Sea and the Atlantic of the Scottish coast, where they trawl and pair

trawl for whitefsh for the UK and the European market.

Currently, Lunar Fishing has four custom-built boats in use. These were all built at Karstensen’s Shipyard in Skagen, Denmark, which has installed CP Marine Gear, propellers, and thrusters from the market-leading Danish manufacturer, Hundested Propeller, in two of the

vessels. According to fsherman Philip Stephen, there’s a good reason for this, “In the conditions we often operate in while at sea, we must have full confdence in our boats. When the weather is at its worst, the stress on the engine can easily reach almost 100 percent. It goes without saying that we need extraordinary, high-quality

equipment, says Philip Stephen, who has fshed for Lunar Fishing for nearly 16 years.” He adds, “Karstensens has long been a trusted supplier for us. So, when they recommended Hundested Propeller, we weren’t in doubt. Subsequently, Hundested Propeller’s solutions have become a requirement for us on all future ships because we know what we are getting, and we know the machine parts can withstand the tension and stress they are exposed to.

Service and support are just a call away

With over 8,000 hours spent at sea each year, Lunar Fishing’s vessels are pushed to the limit in to spend as long time at sea as possible and maximise yield. Likewise, avoiding downtime is critical for turnover, and problems with machine parts often need to be solved on the spot to avoid sending the vessel back to port.

Luckily, this is rarely an issue, Philip Stephen says, “We always bring spare parts on the boats, and we can deal with problems with machine parts while at sea. However, if the problem is more complex, it’s absolutely crucial that we can get support from the manufacturer

Bringing zero-emissions tugs to Europe

Damen Shipyards and Boluda Towage have joined forces to bring zero-emissions tugs to Europe. In a groundbreaking move the two organisations, which have nearly 200 years of tugboat experience between them, aim to launch the frst newbuild methanol tug in Europe.

The frst vessel is intended to be a Damen RSD-E Tug 2513 and the partners are now working together to identify the potential harbour that will be best matched to its operational profle. The two organisations also aim to launch the frst newbuild methanol tug in Europe.

Damen is currently developing the methanol-powered tug as part of its mission to be the world’s most sustainable shipbuilder. This completely

new design is based on Damen’s experience and knowledge thanks to its extensive R&D capability in alternative sustainable propulsion systems.

Boluda as a leading global towage company and Damen as a leading innovative shipbuilder, share a strong commitment towards environmental sustainability, safety and operational excellence. Boluda Towage has been investing for years in order to achieve cleaner and greener operations in the

port. An important milestone in its ambition to work towards lower emissions has been a multiple order of IMO TIER III tugs in 2020. These pioneering vessels set a new standard for all its subsequent newbuilds.

Expanding presence in Asia

At the end of June, another important milestone was reached at Boluda Towage as the world’s largest tugboat operator announced its strategic investment in Hongkong Salvage and Towage Services Limited (“HKSTS”), a new joint venture formed as a member of CK Hutchison Holdings. HKSTS’ principal services include salvage and towage and marine project management business. Through this collaboration, Boluda will be able to expand its business portfolio into Asia and enhance HKSTS service oferings of salvage and towage services, benefting both companies, business customers and the maritime industry. A signing ceremony has been held to commemorate the special occasion and attended by the senior management teams of Boluda and Hutchison Ports.

A modernised port

The new Liebherr all-electric portal slewing crane of type LPS 420 E will be the frst of its kind delivered in Norway –The crane is a key asset for handling every type of cargo, from containers to bulk, general cargo, and heavy lifts up to 124t – local emission-free.

The expected delivery is late 2023, and in the long run another crane that has been in use since 2008 will be replaced to help meet its climate goals while ofering multipurpose cargo handling options, Borg Havn has chosen the Liebherr LPS 420 E.

The port’s investment in an electric infrastructure is the ideal foundation through which the crane will operate. The crane will be delivered fully erected by ship and mounted on the quay at Øra in Fredrikstad.

Borg Havn is investing in a new all-electric harbour crane. The Liebherr portal slewing crane will be the frst of its kind delivered in Norway and exceeds the average turnover of comparable electric driven cranes in the market. All crane movements like lufng, hoisting, slewing and travelling are done by electric motors. The LPS 420 E can be supplied with high or low voltage, depending on the transformer requirements. This ensures that Borg Havn can fulfl its logistical operations while greatly reducing its environmental footprint.

Paving the way for reduced emissions, beneftting from years of industry know-how

Borg Havn is a multi-purpose port which handles all types of cargo like containers, bulk, general cargo, and heavy lift. It’s the third biggest container port in Norway, with 67,249 TEUs in 2021, which is an increase of 14% from 2020.The LPS 420 E will be used for all types of operation and is the frst Liebherr crane at the port.

The contract for the new crane was entered into in March 2022. “This is a large investment for Borg Havn,” says Port Director Tore Lundestad. “Renewing and modernising our crane feet in line with harbour activity is crucial to us. Among the main reasons for our investment in the LPS 420 E is its more environmentally friendly profle, which allows us to greatly reduce emissions and noise in the area.”

It is estimated that as much as 7% of greenhouse gas emissions from shipping occur while the vessels are completely stationary in the harbour. Life on board also needs electricity when the vessel is docked. The ships therefore have the auxiliary engines running to keep the systems running. Elisabeth Cosmatos, Managing Director of Cosmatos Group, has been elected President of The Heavy Lift Group (THLG), an international association for specialised heavy transport companies. Taking over from FOX Brasil’s Murilo Caldana, Cosmatos becomes THLG’s frst female president. Brunswick Corporation has named new presidents for its brands Boston Whaler and Lund Boats. Efective 18 July 2023, Lenn Scholz is president of Boston Whaler and Jeromie Johnston is president of Lund Boats. Mr Scholz, who has been the president of Lund Boats for the past two years, has three decades of experience in various roles across the Brunswick organisation. Prior to leading Lund, Mr Scholz managed the Brunswick Boat Group Technology Center in Edgewater, Florida, and served as vice president of product development and engineering for Boston Whaler.

Following the announcement on 27 April 2021 that Jesper Kragh Andresen will step down as CEO, the Board has decided to accelerate the leadership transition and to appoint Reese McNeel, the current CFO, to interim CEO and CFO efective immediately and until a permanent replacement is selected. Jesper shall continue to support the company as a strategic advisor to the Board and executive team in a transition period. Glen Rødland, Chairman, says, “The Board is pleased that Reese has accepted to be the interim CEO. Reese has already demonstrated his strong leadership and dedication to Prosafe as CFO.”

Swiss marine power company WinGD, announces a change in its leadership position. After fve successful years at the helm, the current CEO of WinGD, Klaus Heim, has informed the Board of Directors that he decided to step down from his role, efective 31 July, 2023. During his tenure as CEO, Mr Heim has steered WinGD through a period of signifcant growth and innovation. In light of this transition, the Board of Directors has appointed Dominik Schneiter as the Acting CEO, efective 1 July, 2023.

The International Council of Marine Industry Associations, ICOMIA, appoints Joe Lynch to the newly created position of CEO. Mr Lynch comes to ICOMIA from a long career in the tourism and charity sectors. A digital marketing specialist, he was the Marketing Director for various Tui Travel brands before being appointed Commercial Director of the Youth Hostel Association (YHA). Mr Lynch will take up the position on 15 June 2023 when the Acting Secretary General of ICOMIA, Tony Rice, steps down after resuming the role from his retirement late last year.
