BEING ONE OF THE TOP MARITIME PUBLISHING COMPANIES IN EUROPE, YELLOW & FINCH PUBLISHERS WILL PROUDLY DISPLAY ITS PRODUCTS AND SERVICES AT NOR-SHIPPING 2015 TRADE SHOW. NOR-SHIPPING celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year and will be held from 2 to 5 June 2015 in Oslo. You will find a preview of NorShipping 2015 in this issue. Yellow & Finch Publishers cordially invite you to visit our booth A1-58 where our managers and editors are waiting to meet and greet you, and share and exchange thoughts about improving your business opportunities. I’m personally very much looking forward to meeting you at Nor-Shipping! Another trade show highlighted in this publication is the Electric & Hybrid Marine World Expo. The show has grown rapidly over the past year – at this moment, the number of registered visitors is already double that of 2014. The show will be held from 23 to 25 June 2015 in the RAI Congress Centre in Amsterdam, where more than 140 exhibitors will be ready to meet you. Technologies, components and solutions will be on display for an international audience of marine industry professionals. Last February, Norwegian shipyard Ulstein Verft delivered the 83-metre-long multi-purpose field/platform supply vessel Blue Queen to Blue Ship Invest. Read about the Blue Queen, whose design features the renowned X-BOW hull line, in this issue’s Ship Report. For our refit, repair and conversion theme we have covered Anthony Veder’s retrofitted LPG/LEG/LNG carrier Coral Anthelia. Read why retrofitting a tanker to run on LNG is both technically and financially viable. I’d like to take the opportunity to invite you to our fifth annual golf event on 17 September 2015 in Goes, the Netherlands. Also this year Yellow & Finch Publishers will organise the annual charity Maritime Golf Event. Over 100 maritime professionals are expected to attend and we sincerely hope that this event’s KiKa (Children Cancer-free foundation) donation will top the sum of EUR 13,000. For more information, please see our website. In conclusion, I hope to meet you in Oslo at Nor-Shipping in June or at one of the other events this year. And as always, Yellow & Finch Publishers hopes to have the opportunity to help your company with its communication needs.

New Workboat by Alumarine Shipyard

The Alumarine Shipyard recently completed the construction of a new workboat under 12 metres, designed for diving operations, subsea works and material transport. All technical trials have been validated. The boat will operate on the new coastal highway project on Reunion Island. This is the second model of this range that confirms great performance and excellent stability. A first model adapted to the transport of heavy material and equipped with hydrojets was already delivered to a professional of the building and construction sector.

Long-Term Maintenance Contract Ahrenkiel Steamship and Radio Holland Germany have made a long-term maintenance agreement for the entire Ahrenkiel Steamship fleet, which comprises nearly sixty vessels. The five-year agreement covers the navigation and communication systems on board. This preventive maintenance, in combination with dedicated service coordination, planned service calls and statutory required inspections, is expected to lead to a reduction of the operational costs for the owners as well as increasing uptime of the fleet.

NEWS IN BRIEF Environmentally-Conscious Vessel Technology Veecraft Marine is set to become the first vessel construction and maritime engineering solutions company in South Africa to introduce hybrid-propulsion technology in locally-built commercial craft. According to Veecraft Marine’s Andre van Niekerk, “The flexibility of hybrid propulsion makes it possible to achieve both speed and fuel efficiency because the technology allows the vessel to go from electrical power to a combination of electrical and diesel power when additional speed or power is required.”

Christening of Tess

Innovative MOB System

The chistening of Van Laar Maritime’s multi-purpose support vessel Tess took place in April. Van Laar Maritime came to Shipyard Trico to build the first vessel of their new fleet and to be the main contractor of the project. The ship is completely Dutch – the hull was built in Vlissingen, then shipped to Rotterdam and finished at Shipyard Trico. The vessel has a total length of 37.5 metres and a width of 8.70 metres.

Admarel introduced a new search-and-rescue system, named SeaAngel. The compact, waterproof and floating MOB system operates on the basis of AIS, has integrated GPS technology and can be used by the commercial and leisure market. The SA14 SART SeaAngel is worldwide the only ‘wheelmark’-approved AIS MOB system, suitable for commercial ships and transmits on the AIS frequency with a range up to 10NM. The SA14 SART weighs 190 grams, measures 13.8 by 6.5 by 2.5 cm and operates from -20°C to +55°C. The SA14 SART can be activated manual or automatically and fits easily on life jacket, life raft or buoy.

Approval for Halogen-Free Cable Ducts The German manufacturer of cable trunking Licatec recently obtained DNV GL approval on all the halogen-free cable ducts. The DNV approval will be valid for the F2000 series as well as for the DIN-version (EN50085). The halogen-free plastic is according to VDE 0472, part 815, with a temperature resistance of -25°C up to +90°C. Both series are available in Eplan and the complete range of halogen-free cable trunking is available from stock. Licatec also offers a wide range of accessories like dividers and wire holders. | Read more on shipbuilding-industry.eu

REPRESENTING THE NEW PSV GENERATION

Blue Queen ON 24 FEBRUARY 2015 ULSTEIN VERFT DELIVERED THE 83-METRE-LONG, MULTIPURPOSE FIELD/PLATFORM SUPPLY VESSEL BLUE QUEEN TO BLUE SHIP INVEST. THE VESSEL’S ULSTEIN PX121 DESIGN HAS GAINED MUCH INTEREST SINCE IT WAS FIRSTLY introduced to the market in 2012. The design features the renowned X-BOW hull line, a bow shape that eliminates slamming from head sea. Naval architects having returned from North Sea trips on board two vessels of this design have gained valuable feedback.

SHIP REPORT

n total 30 vessels of the PX121 PSV design have been contracted by different ship owners for construction at various shipyards worldwide since the first of the vessels’ operations started in 2012. The Blue Queen is the ninth having been constructed at Ulstein Verft. The crews on the vessels in operation have provided positive feedback for its user-friendliness, its high comfort and accommodation standards, and for its operability even in adverse weather conditions. This positive feedback is due to a good combination of fuel efficiency and load capacity. As one of the ship owners has stated: “The PX121 vessel is part of the new generation of PSVs and offers, especially in harsher environments, a unique combination of world class client service delivery, high efficiency and impressive crew comfort.” Tore Ulstein, deputy CEO and Head of Markets and Innovations in Ulstein Group, comments: “Our design success can be explained by having our own yard, at which the prototypes such as the PX121s, are constructed. We have the complete innovation cycle on site, from concept drawings till state-of-the art offshore

vessels. Our professional team works continuously in developing our designs and solutions for the future, in close dialogue and cooperation with ship owners, suppliers, classification societies and state authorities.”

Accommodation The accommodation has a permanent capacity for 22 persons and complies with MCL 2006. The accommodation, which includes two state cabins as well as one-, two- and three-bed cabins, is in accordance with the Ulstein Accommodation Standard. The vessel is fitted with a sickbay, a galley, a nineteen-seat mess room, two dayrooms, a deck pantry, a wardrobe, a laundry and a gym. Floating floors on all decks provide low noise and vibration levels throughout the accommodation.

Propulsion system The main propulsion system comprises two azimuth pulling thrusters, each driven by a frequency-controlled variable-speed electric motor. Also installed are one retractable azimuth thruster and two side thrusters on the forward side, ensuring that the vessel obtains the best station-keeping capabilities

with ERN[99,99,99,89]. The vessel is equipped, built and certified according to IMO Class II regulation for dynamic positioning. The Blue Queen will be fulfilling the general demands of the offshore industry for carriage of cargoes. Also the carriage of pipes and other general cargo on open deck will be one of its main activities. “We are very satisfied that the Blue Queen, as soon as she was delivered, was contracted for fourteen days of work for the Swedish oil company Lundin. The ship will perform drilling support duties in the North Sea,” comments general manager Lars Lühr Olsen

in Blue Ship Invest, the owner of the vessel. Shortly after her naming on 27 February 2015, the Blue Queen set off to work on a fourteen-day contract in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. Golden Energy Offshore has the management of the vessel, and sent the first testimonial from the Blue Queen after three days of work: “We are positioned next to a semi-submersible rig. Wave height is 4 to 7 metres, the wind is measured to be 40 knots and more. The Master reports of excellent station-keeping.” i. www.ulstein.com

Features of the Ulstein X-BOW hull design • Higher transit speed in calm water due to low angles of entry and increased waterline length. • No bow flare, thereby eliminating bow impact and/or slamming in fore ship • High transit speed in head and following seas, giving reduced power consumption and higher fuel efficiency in waves and still water. • The vessel is designed for environmental friendly operations and is certified by Det Norske Veritas according to the latest rules for Class Clean Design. An IHM Certificate as per IMO guidelines on ship recycling has been issued.

Also new this year is Brazil@Nor-Shipping – a programme of events and activities focused on Brazil. It includes industry sessions during which participants will discuss and debate economic and industry perspectives. A strong Brazilian delegation will be on hand at all sessions. A legal seminar will look at what’s involved in setting up shop in Brazil as well as taxation. A country with one of the fastest growing economies in the world, Brazil’s recent presidential election and the formation of a new cabinet mean the time is ripe for change. Given these developments, the spotlight will naturally fall on Brazil’s important offshore market and its investment potential.

TRADE SHOW

“As we are in a time of change, it’s the perfect opportunity for us to tell people what’s happening here. Nor-Shipping is an excellent platform for us to do that,” says Ricardo Cesar Fernandes, Executive Director of the Brazilian Association of Norwegian Shipowners.

Offshore Agenda

The third new offering is the Women@NorShipping Waves of Change Conference, presented in collaboration with the Women’s International Shipping and Trade Association (WISTA). While women will set the agenda, it’s definitely not a women-only affair, says Bjørg Ekornrud, President of WISTA. Topics on the table are the environment, leadership and their influence on the future. The Nor-Shipping conferences are well known for putting high-level speakers on the stage and not shying away from the hard discussions that move the industry forward. Innovative Investment and Transformative Technology are just two of the hot topics on its 2015 agenda. Players who will present, debate and discuss these topics include IMO Secretary General Koji Sekimizu, BW Shipping Managing Director Yngvil Eriksson Åsheim, Nordea Head of Shipping, Offshore and Oil Services Hans Kjelsrud and many more. Key players from outside the industry will also take a stand. These include World Economic Forum Managing Director Espen Barth Eide and the world-renowned strategy, globalisation and entrepreneurship expert Dr. Anil Gupta. Borderless Business and Collaborative Society are two of the topics up for debate at Agenda Offshore 2015. Teekay CEO Peter Evensen, National Oilwell Varco CEO and President Clay Williams and many others will weigh in here.

Young@Nor-Shipping

But Nor-Shipping is not just about VIPs and top-level discussions. Seafarers around the world will also come to the fore this year, when a portion of every ticket or pass sold at Nor-Shipping 2015 will be donated to The Mission to Seafarers, as will a part of ticket sales for the Nor-Shipping Barbecue and 50th anniversary party. Young people will also be in focus at Ocean Talent Camp. Recognising that now is the time to find the talent needed in the Ocean Industries in the coming decades, the Ocean

PARKER HANNIFIN’S COMPLETE PIPING SOLUTIONS

The Evolution of Hydraulic Piping HYDRAULIC PIPING SYSTEMS HAVE COME A LONG WAY SINCE THE DAYS OF TRADITIONAL WELDING INSTALLATION METHODS. THESE WERE LABORIOUS, COSTLY AND CAME WITH THE OBVIOUS SAFETY ISSUES THAT GO HAND IN HAND with welding. In recent years, weld-free piping technology has advanced: Parker Hannifin’s Parflange F37 is the backbone of what the company calls its Complete Piping Solutions (CPS) – found in numerous marine and offshore applications. To learn more about the ins and outs of the CPS and about Parker Hannifin’s global network, editor Tom Scott spoke to Martijn Huuskes, the company’s Global Account Manager.

I

“ n the early days, pipes were always welded together,” explains Mr Huuskes referring to the time-consuming process of welding. “We have developed a patented flanged system – the Parflange F37 system – as a proven alternative.” The F37 system forms the foundation of Parker’s CPS concept. “As there is no need for welding, there is also no need for weld inspection or cleaning. Furthermore, with our series production, whole systems can be pre-formed. This yields significant time advantages for the client.”

Comprehensive Consultation Martijn Huuskes, Parker Hannifin global account manager

www. s h i p b u i l d i n g - i n d ustr y.eu

Parker.indd 21

“CPS can be installed on any hydraulic installation,” continues Mr Huuskes. “And there are so many hydraulic functions on a vessel. Cranes, winches, tensioners – all of that needs hydraulic piping. What’s more, we can install it on any type of vessel. You might be talking about a workship, dredger or pipe-laying vessel.” Whether the scope of the project requires the complete redesign of a welded piping system or the fabrication and delivery of a pre-engineered non-welded piping assembly, Parker’s CPS engineering team offers clients comprehensive consultation and design services.

“Our R&D department cooperates closely with clients and asks ‘How can we find a better solution?’” Mr Huuskes states. “We are constantly looking for, and finding, improvements.” During consultation, the CPS team reviews the client’s project requirements to determine the best-suited services. Technical and commercial requirements are also reviewed. For example, line sizing, clamping requirements, routing as well as environmental and safety concerns are considered during this early stage.

Uniform Software

“We are a worldwide company. Our CPS Centres are located in the major shipbuilding and offshore regions – Brazil, Houston, Korea, China, Singapore and in Europe of course,” highlights Mr Huuskes. “What we are seeing more and more is that clients are global – they engineer a ship in the Netherlands and build it in Korea. Our big advantage is that we use the same software on all our pipe-bending machines. Because the software is uniform, we can send it anywhere.” Parker’s production process is also standardised: “We use the same type of

We are constantly looking for, and finding, improvements. pipe bending machine at every CPS Centre so transferring information and software is very efficient. Wherever the location, the client receives the right piece of pipe.” The team provides a tailored proposal to match the customer’s technical and commercial requirements whether the project is a line expansion, retrofit of existing piping system or for OEM piping assemblies. This key collaborative planning provides a solid foundation for subsequent design work, as well as for fabrication of piping assemblies. As the project enters the design stage, Parker’s engineer-to-engineer collaboration with the customer ensures that all technical requirements are met. Depending on the scope of work, piping assemblies are designed either on the jobsite or at the CPS Centre. The company’s piping designers have the capacity to perform on-site measurement and surveying, modification of detailed piping drawings in addition to reviewing technical specifications and standards.

Prefabricated Assemblies

With state-of-the-art CNC bending equipment together with the all the complementary pipe end finishing equipment at their disposal, the CPS team manufactures prefabricated piping assemblies. By using cold drawn seamless tubes, the non-welded Parflange F37 system is inherently cleaner than welded piping systems, providing the benefit of reduced system flushing time. Combined with the obvious advantages of removing welding from the installation equation, the financial and timesaving effects can be considerable. To meet documented customer requirements, the CPS Centre also employs filtration and condition monitoring technologies to bring piping cleanliness up to speed. This can also include on-site leakproof testing services.

Worldwide Representation

One of the crucial points to note is the capability of Parker’s CPS team to deliver prefabricated pre-bent piping assemblies to the worksite. These pipe assemblies will be protected, labelled and ready for installation. On-site installation is efficient as the delivery of pre-fabricated assemblies reduces much of the on-site design and fabrication. When the project does not allow for prefabrication of assemblies, Parker’s CPS technicians dispatch these capabilities to the job. A project manager who oversees the project from start to finish coordinates the maximising of the installation throughput and quality. “We have worldwide representatives with local support,” says Mr Huuskes. “For example, an account team in the Netherlands, including all relevant specialists. And a project manager who draws all the right people together – from the R&D department to the sales team.” This guarantees that the installed piping system meets all requirements. This setup also enables quick reaction to unforeseen project obstacles or design changes – dramatically minimising costly project delays and downtime.

Customer Case Study “We have carried out numerous projects with Royal IHC,” informs Martijn Huuskes, Global Account Manager at Parker Hannifin. “Our cooperative relationship started in 2003 when Parker acquired Denison Hydraulics – about the same time that IHC acquired Hytop. Since then, we have extended our cooperative activities. Today, we supply not only hydraulic components but also pumps, valves, motors and hose assemblies.” One notable project that the two parties have worked closely on is the Sapura Diamante. The 146m vessel is the first in a series of five offshore pipe-laying vessels designed, developed and built by Royal IHC. The vessel’s vertical, tiltable 550t pipe lay tower has a variety of hydraulic systems including cylinders, manifolds and batteries. In their role as supplier to IHC Piping, Parker delivered the F37 and EO2 products in addition to prefabricated piping systems for the Sapura Diamante project. For this, Parker was also involved in the engineering, assembly and test phases. Parker also supplied a number of Royal IHC’s other suppliers: National Oil Varco, who supplied the 250t knuckle boom crane and what was then known as SAS Offshore, who provided the tensioners.

ACTA MARINE’S NEW CIG-DESIGNED WIND FARM SUPPORT VESSEL

REDEFINING Comfort & Performance

TO MEET THE DEMANDING CONDITIONS OF AN OFFSHORE WIND FARM PROJECT IN THE NORTH SEA, CIG HAVE DESIGNED A VESSEL FOR ACTA MARINE. REDEFINING THE CONCEPT OF CREW COMFORT, the 108m Acta Orion also boasts greater installed power leading to a larger operational window. Acta Marine Managing Director Govert Jan van Oord and CIG Technical Director Maarten Sickler met up with ShipBuilding Industry’s Ben Littler to tell him more about the vessel. WORDS BY BEN LITTLER

o develop a vessel able to handle prolonged working periods in capricious North Sea conditions, Acta Marine collaborated closely with CIG Shipbuilding to come up with the design for the latest addition to its fleet. The vessel is currently under construction at the Partner Stocznia shipyard in Police, Poland.

CIG layout new.indd 25

“The vessel is a customised design, based on CIG’s 6000 GC-E,” says Mr Van Oord. Like the 6000 GC-E, the Acta Orion is 108m in length with a beam of 16m. She has additional installed power and more propellers than the standard 6000 GC-E however, meaning that she will be able to use her DP2 in a higher wave and wind range. “The vessel’s design has been tested according to MARIN (Marine Research Institute Netherlands) specifications for comfort,” he continues. “This is for reasons of safety above everything else. If the vessel is comfortable then the crew is going to be able to start work feeling alert and sharp so they can focus on their work. We were looking for a vessel that was designed specifically with the conditions of the North Sea in mind.” Mr Sickler explains the way in which the required high comfort levels have been achieved. “What is comfort at sea? Is it comfortable at sea? It is on this vessel,” he states. “We did a lot of research and we found that a vessel could be tuned to the typical wave spectra data of the North Sea area. We are under the impression that size does

matter – if you have the right size, the right weight and the right stability you minimise the rolling of the vessel and increase uptime.”

Fortnight at Sea

Mr Van Oord points out that the accommodation – fit for 75 persons – focuses on ensuring crew comfort for extended periods of time. “The vessel will feature large North Sea standard rooms and minimised sound and vibration levels. This is important as the crew will be on board a prolonged period of time – anything up to four weeks at a time,” he says. He envisages that the vessel will typically remain at sea for the same period of time. “There may be some transfer by crew boats, but I imagine that the vessel will usually transport the crew. This will allow the vessel the chance to return to port and re-stock on equipment and supplies.”

Transfer Walkway

An additional factor in the vessel’s comfort levels is the inclusion of a motion compensated walkway to transfer the crew and equipment to wind turbine foundations from the vessel. “The design features two boat landings for crew transfer vessels, but the principal method of transfer is going to the be the walkway, which will be far more comfortable for those aboard,” Mr Van Oord explains. This is especially the case because of a unique feature of the CIG design – the walkway system is positioned on the aft of the vessel, instead of the more usual location in the middle. “Because we have a

vessel that doesn’t move as much, this is possible,” says Mr Sickler. “If you have your transfer system at the aft, then the vessel is more free to choose her heading relative to wind and wave. If your transfer system is in the middle of the vessel then you have to be alongside the platform. If you are broadside to wind and wave then you use a lot of energy station keeping. But if your vessel is larger, like this one, then you can choose a different location. This also means that, if you are in manoeuvring mode and the vessel is indeed with the bow into the waves and wind, then comfort on board is maintained as rolling is kept to a minimum.” For loading and unloading, the Acta Orion will feature a 24t Lagendijk deck crane.

All on Schedule

Mr Van Oord says he is extremely pleased with the progress of the vessel to date. “We selected CIG for a number of reasons – one of which was the tight time frame. We needed the vessel to be ready in time to go

to work on the Gemini Wind Farm construction project. We were confident that CIG would be able to execute a timely project – from engineering and design through to construction and delivery – that would meet all the requirements for a high standard vessel. So far everything has gone perfectly, everything is completely on schedule and the vessel will be delivered in September this year.” As soon as the vessel is delivered later this year, she will begin her charter at Gemini where she will support Van Oord’s new cable-layer vessel, Nexus. Mr Van Oord concludes: “Nexus will lay the cables at the wind farm and, following that, this vessel will be required to accommodate the crew who will work from the turbine foundation, connecting the cables for Gemini.” i. www.actamarine.com i. www.centralindustrygroup.com

ANOTHER BREAKTHROUGH INNOVATION

In-Hull Retrofit ANTHONY VEDER’S 6,500M3 LPG/LEG/LNG CARRIER CORAL ANTHELIA WAS RECENTLY RETROFITTED WITH A DUAL-FUEL (DF) ENGINE THAT ENABLES HER TO RUN ON BOIL-OFF GAS WHEN transporting LNG. Having successfully completed her sea trials, the vessel currently operates in the North and Baltic Seas and regularly loads LNG at the Rotterdam Gate Terminal. This great result was achieved by close collaboration of partners working effectively together in a trusting and safe way. This breakthrough innovation in the use of LNG for short sea shipping shows that retrofitting a tanker to run on LNG is both technically and Photo courtesy of Anthony Veder

financially viable.

I

n 2012 and 2013, Anthony Veder built four new ethylene carriers fitted with MaK M43C propulsion engines. When the company took delivery of the 115m Coral Anthelia in 2013, she was fitted with a conventional six-cylinder MaK M43C diesel engine. This fourth carrier was already in an advanced stage when the decision was made to convert the existing engine into a DF engine – representing a world’s first in using this new technique. In close collaboration with Caterpillar/MaK, Bolier converted the existing M43C engine to a M46DF engine. Vapour manifold on deck. Photo courtesy of Anthony Veder

Gas Boil-Off With Anthony Veder taking responsibility of the overall planning, the project was successfully completed in collaboration with partners such as Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam and Caterpillar dealer Bolier. Covering the electrical, piping and automation scope of works were Croon Elektrotechniek, Leemberg and Eekels respectively. Despite the complexity, the team managed to execute the works in less than five weeks. With the vessel’s design already optimised for ethylene trading, a new target was set: consumption of the boil-off gas as fuel when carrying LNG while without having to

replace the 18-month old engine. The solution was found by retrofitting the engine to make it a MaK M46DF engine. According to Bolier’s Customer support manager, Frans Jührend, this is the first upgrade in the world to use this new technique – achieved by making use of a dedicated package that had recently become available. It turned out to be a challenging project, requiring highly specialised work.

The engine offers optimal flexibility for ships operating in emission controlled areas, as well as less regulated areas. Furthermore, the DF engine retains the typical characteristics of MaK engines, such as operational reliability, efficiency and durability.

Leading Efficiency in Gas Mode Damen Shiprepair & Conversion’s Rotterdambased Van Brink was the yard of choice to accomplish such a significant scope of work. As well as having four floating docks, with a maximum 25,000t lifting capacity, and four berths, the yard is also an authorised Caterpillar Marine Power dealer. “This was a major conversion of an existing vessel,” explains Damen Shiprepair Van Brink Rotterdam Project Manager Peter Dekker. “The works were completed on schedule.”

Coral Anthelia.indd 33

As well as the engine conversion, the Coral Anthelia also needed a lot of additional equipment to keep the LNG below -160°C. “Compressors, cooling units, gas valve units and ventilators are installed during the conversion period. Also a lot of piping – all double-walled for safety reasons.” Safety, Mr Dekker goes on to say, played a prominent role at all times. “With Leemberg doing the piping, Croon the electrics and Bolier performing the engine conversion, we learned a lot doing this contract. It was a success due to the good communication between all parties involved. We are in a great position to perform more contracts like this in the future.”

Teaming Up Leemberg’s work involved the engineering, prefabrication, assembly and fitting of several new piping systems. Once fitted, the Netherlands-based company performed flushing, cleaning and non-destructive examination of all completed piping systems prior to the final Bureau Veritas survey. In this way, Leemberg supplied the Coral Anthelia with a comprehensive piping systems replacement – encompassing fuel gas, inert gas, nitrogen, cooling water, glycol water, starting air and exhaust piping.

“A crucial factor in winning this contract was our extensive experience performing such broad projects under such tight timeframes,” comments Leemberg Sales Manager Francisco Bertrand. “We were proud to carry out this project for such an important client.” Croon’s scope began by advising Anthony Veder about the engineering of the vessel’s electrical installation. The biggest challenge was to build a completely new installation in an existing environment and in collaboration with multiple suppliers – not to mention the short timeframe involved. In order to successfully tackle the project and synchronise operations efficiently, several parts of the installation were completely taken apart and rebuilt. This involved several other companies. The gas detection systems and valves were renewed in close cooperation with TGE. Together with Eekels Technology, the company fitted a brand new alarm installation. Teaming up with Bolier, Croon’s scope also included the engine conversion. With all these different disciplines, Croon specifically designed the new and refitted components. As with Leemberg, testing was also a significant part of Croon’s work: ensuring that everything worked safely and effectively. They tested the total installation intensively – bringing in the various suppliers to see how their specific installations interacted with the whole system. Testing continued during the sea trials, when the company perfected the configuration of the installation.

The Dual Fuel Concept Based on the successful M43C MaK medium-speed engine, Caterpillar designed the M46DF to meet and exceed the M43C reliability and life-time expectations, while maintaining its class leading position regarding operational efficiency and reliability. The M46DF was strategically engineered to allow for the retrofitting of current M43C engines. Applying the same design philosophies, the M46DF shares the same footprint with the M43C providing the opportunity to retrofit M43C engines. With its clean design, the M46DF allows fast and easy access to system and components, supporting the operation, service and maintenance simplicity. It was designed for electric-drive propulsion systems as well as mechanical propulsion systems. Although designed for unlimited operation on LNG, marine diesel oil and heavy fuel oil, the M46DF will reach industry-leading efficiency in gas mode. Designed to operate on gaseous as well as liquid (MDO and HFO) fuels the M46DF meets IMO III emission limits while operating in gas mode, injecting a small amount of ignition fuel to control combustion. The M46DF complies with IMO II emission regulations while operating in diesel mode – with liquid fuels only. Special attention was given to customer specifications for a safe and reliable operation at varying engine loads and gas qualities.

MTU’S REMAN ENGINES

Powerful Drive IN TERMS OF DESIGN, MTU’S REMANUFACTURED ENGINES ARE IDENTICAL TO THEIR NEW ONES AND RECEIVE THE SAME WARRANTY. THEY ALSO MAKE AN ECONOMICAL OPTION for buyers while saving valuable production resources. The River Elbe Pilots’ Association in northern Germany selected MTU Reman’s as main engines for their pilot launch Duhnen. Considering the harsh conditions and the fact that each engine clocks up to 6,000 operating hours per year, reliability is paramount.

F

or 30 years, a majority of the pilot launches operated by the pilot associations have been powered by MTU engines. Three of them now run with Reman engines. These are engines that have already spent one ‘lifetime’ in another vessel, and have been overhauled to such an extent that they correspond to new engines down to the smallest detail. The most recent change took place in the pilot launch Duhnen. In the hulls of the vessel, two MTU drives of type 12V 2000 M70 ensure that the pilots are safely transported to the large tankers in the North Sea.

Diesel-Electric

Pilots are employed worldwide to guide large tankers, cruise liners and freighters safely into port. Pilots are used because they know the coastal waters much better than the ships’ captains from many different nations. In Germany, there are about 800 pilots and almost 270 belong to the River Elbe Pilots’ Association. They are responsible for the stretch between Hamburg and the North Sea. To accomplish this task, the pilots need a vessel that they can rely upon one hundred percent. “The engines must not fail under any circumstances. Particularly when we’re bringing the small pilot launches alongside the large tankers to allow the pilots to alight, an engine failure would be potentially fatal,” explains Andreas Schoon, Managing Director of the Cuxhaven branch of the Pilots’ Association. This perilous situation exists principally because the pilot launches have to come alongside the large tankers

www. s h i p b u i l d i n g - i n d ustr y.eu

MTU.indd 37

whilst they are underway. The pilot needs to have total confidence in both captains: Both helmsmen have to maintain precisely the same speed. Up to 40km off the coast of Cuxhaven, the two 12V 2000 M70 engines from MTU make sure that the pilots are transported safely. The pilot launches are operated with diesel-electric power. Each engine generates an output of 788kW, giving the vessel a top speed of up to 18 knots. The engines already operated reliably during their first life, so the Pilots’ Association decided to install the tried-and-tested engines once again.

Optimum Propulsion

The double-hulled vessels painted in striking orange and red livery rely on MTU Reman engines as they ply their trade. “You can picture the Reman process like paying a deposit on bottles at the supermarket,” explains Thomas Geertz, who is responsible for service at MTU in Hamburg. “Customers

who have already bought new engines from us can exchange the engine by buying a completely overhauled Reman engine.” To prevent long downtimes, the customer needs to inform MTU early on and will then be provided with an identical engine. The customer pays for the overhauled engine and a deposit, which is referred to as the core charge. As soon as the used engine has been returned by the customer to MTU, the core charge is refunded – assuming all the specifications are complied with. For example, all parts must be fitted on the engine, and the maintenance intervals must have been complied with. “If the customer insists, it is also possible for him to get his own engine back again. However, this will take several weeks,” describes Mr Geertz. The Pilots’ Association works with an engine pool. “We always keep a stock of engines so that if we need to exchange one, the downtime for the vessel will be as short as possible,” explains Mr Schoon.

Harsh Conditions

Each engine clocks up between 4,500 and 6,000 operating hours per year. That

corresponds to a continuously operating time of about six to nine months. However, the particular challenge is that the engines usually operate for between two and three weeks at a stretch. “And the weather can get really stormy,” says Mr Schoon. “In good weather, we can get by using two engines on the station ships, whereas when conditions are rougher, it’s quite possible for us to need all four engines to extricate the vessel quickly and safely from a dangerous situation.” MTU engines can withstand these conditions, irrespective of whether they are new or completely overhauled Reman engines. “It makes no difference for the customer. Reman engines are as-new, and even come with the same warranty as a new engine,” explains Mr Geertz. “As a result, you can rely on these engines in difficult situations just like new ones.”

Sustainable Process

MTU carries out the complete overhaul of the engines using a standardised process in-house. The Technology Center in Magdeburg is geared up for series remanufacturing of MTU engines. Old

engines from all over the world are delivered here and completely overhauled for their new lives. This process provides several advantages for customers. “It’s a very sustainable process. The basic materials such as the cylinder heads, crankshafts or crankcase are simply remanufactured. This means there is no need to consume additional raw materials,” explains Carola Riedter from Global Reman at MTU Friedrichshafen. “Only wear parts such as gaskets are replaced by new parts.” Also, the customer will not notice any changes on the exterior. The engines are identical to those which were returned, and are even repainted in the corresponding colour. What is more, MTU offers the same warranty on them as on new engines. The MTU Value Care service portfolio is also supported. “Our customers can use all the offers in our service portfolio without restrictions. at Cuxhaven, Hamburg or along the Kiel Canal. Each of them is an experienced captain. The size of vessels that a pilot is allowed to control depends on years of service. This article originally appeared in the MTU Report and was written by Yvonna Wirth, with photos by Robert Hack.

A Pilot’s Life

Every day, the pilots set out into the North Sea on board the Duhnen. Here, a larger pilot launch is already waiting for them at the mouth of the River Elbe. From this point onwards, vessels with a length of 90m or more and a beam of 13m are obliged to continue with a pilot on board. The pilot station vessels will remain here for two weeks. The Elbe or Hanse, which is the name of the station vessels, are also powered by MTU engines and have a double-hull design referred to as SWATH (small waterplane area twin hull). The pilots can wait on board the floating pilot stations until they are needed by a large freighter or tanker. There is hot food, mess rooms, televisions, a sauna and fitness room as well as cosy pilots’ cabins for resting between duties. Pilots have to be on the job 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. As soon as a large vessel approaches, the pilots are collected from the station ship by the Duhnen and brought out to the large tanker. The pilots go on board either using a small projecting gantry or with a pilot ladder. They have to place great trust in the captains of the two vessels, because the vessels need to be making exactly the same speed so that the pilots can go across. The pilots then guide the vessels safely into the various harbours

Norwegian joint effort to ensure green coastal shipping

On 16 January 2015 Minister of Trade & Industry Monica Mæland and State Secretary for Climate & Environment Lars Andreas Lunde signed a declaration of cooperation with key players in the Norwegian coastal shipping industry. This declaration aims to ensure that Norway has the world’s most environmentally friendly fleet of coastal vessels. In the future, LNG and battery power are projected to comprise a considerable share of the fuel used by the global fleet. Norway already has a leading position in this field and has a good environmental and business starting point to more broadly implement

ECOLINER

The multi-purpose cargo ship Ecoliner, designed by Dykstra Naval Architects, is a durable alternative for modern cargo ships. Sail propulsion is used to reduce fuel consumption and thereby cost and emissions. The ship is equipped with a hybrid propulsion system comprising sails and a propeller. Through motor sailing, the ship is able to keep a schedule while the rigging is used in the most efficient way. Her masts can be used as cranes. The ship will make use of the trade winds.

these new technologies. DNV GL has now taken the initiative to launch a Green Coastal Shipping programme, a joint effort by industry and authorities to ensure that in the future Norway will have one of the world’s most environmentally friendly and efficient coastal shipping industries. DNV GL’s Deputy Group CEO Remi Eriksen: “We can achieve this if we want to. There are many examples of incentives driving forward a green shift. The technology is there, but we have to scale up its use considerably in order to maintain our international position.” The Norwegian Ministries of Trade, Industry & Fisheries and Climate & Environment all support these efforts.

n 18 February 2015 Havyard Group and Fafnir Offshore were presented with the Environmental Award at the annual Offshore Support Journal Conference in London. They won the award for new build 126, a Havyard 833 WE ICE platform supply vessel with hybrid battery power that Havyard is building for Fafnir. “I am pleased to have won the Environmental Award in London together with Havyard,” says Steingrimur Erlingsson, founder/owner of Fafnir. Havyard devotes extensive resources to research and development in order to produce ship designs that are safe, cost-efficient and environmentally friendly. This has resulted in orders from both the offshore oil industry and the renewable energy industry. New build 126 is the result of Havyard’s strong focus on operating economy and the environment. In the eyes of the company it is profitable to invest in R&D that aims at environmentally friendly products. The unit is the second offshore vessel that Fafnir has ordered from Havyard. Fafnir was also the first to order Havyard’s new WE design called Polarsyssel, which was developed for Fafnir and delivered from Havyard’s yard in Leirvik in Sogn in September 2014. The combination of the Havyard 833 WE ICE hull design and hybrid battery power has resulted in a PSV that will use 30 - 40 percent less fuel than traditional PSVs during certain operations. This will also lead to a corresponding reduction in emissions of environmentally harmful gases.

DS provides a wide range of products to the ship building industry – from Holland profile, flat or angled steel to half-round bar, welded or seamless pipe. Besides construction material in steel, aluminium, stainless-steel and nonferrous metals, the company is also known for the supply of round bars and flanges.

Numerous Benefits

ODS’s company’s recent relocation of steel preparation facilities to its central warehouse in Barendrecht, the Netherlands, prompted the simultaneous decision to modify its steel-priming methods. Previously ODS worked with Sigmaweld – a two-component zinc silicate shop primer well known in the shipbuilding industry. The company now uses a more environmentalfriendly product: a waterbased low zinc (ethyl)

silicate shop primer called Sigma Aquaweld 100. With this product, which was made in consultation with manufacturer/supplier PPG Protective & Marine Coatings, ODS is now able to prime steel internally. The benefits of this green primer, in terms of advantages to both customer and environment, are numerous. One of the most noticeable is that emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are reduced to zero –

something that ODS is justly proud of. Furthermore, as VOC emissions are zero, it is not necessary to reduce them by after-burning techniques. The consequence of this is that the ODS shop priming process is now CO2 neutral.

Heat Stability

The advantages of the product’s ‘green’ characteristics are particularly relevant when looking at increasing stricter regulations and customer

attitudes relating to environmental impact. Classification societies developing Green Passport notations and clients becoming more aware about their carbon footprint are just two examples. Sigma Aquaweld 100 is suitable for automatic application on shot-blasted steel plates. It is touch-dry 10 minutes after application. It has excellent welding properties – with both MIG and MAG welding – and is thermally stable thus minimising heat damage during hot-work procedures. Furthermore, as well as having a Lloyd’s Register approval, Aquaweld 100 can be combined with all conventional paint systems. Further boosting steel protection, it is suitable for seawater immersion applications combined with cathodic protection.

Green Move

Because of ODS’s recent move from Amsterdam to the Rotterdam region, the company has become a lot ‘greener’. The green benefit of this move is logistical optimization. ODS is now located in the RotterdamGorinchem shipbuilding area – with its own in-house transport department the company is now even better capable of covering all shipbuilding areas in the Netherlands. In an industry that is getting increasingly environmental-conscious, ODS is facing a world with more and more environmental challenges and ‘green wishes’ and intends to comply with these. i. www.odsbv.eu

GAINING

the Competitive Edge SUBJECTS SUCH AS ‘SUSTAINABILITY’ AND ‘GREEN TECHNOLOGY’ HAVE BEEN DISCUSSED IN THE PAST YEARS, OR ARE USED AS A POPULAR PLUG FOR CORPORATE ANNOUNCEMENTS. Nevertheless, reality in the industry is still not consequently sustainable, because companies use the majority of the gross production value for material.

A

ccording to calculations by the German Federal Office of Statistics, that is an average 45 percent. This results in a large savings potential with regard to both sustainability and company operating costs. In view of rising costs for raw materials and energy, one thing is sure: Whoever wants to stay competitive, must go really easy on resources, streamline production processes and therewith increase efficiency.

Cost Saving Potential

The resource human being should also be taken into consideration comprehensively in this context, because operator-friendly and secure production processes make a considerable contribution to the profitability of companies. In shipbuilding construction miles and miles of pipelines made of the most varied materials and with variable diameters and nominal widths are processed. That is why highest flexibility is in great demand with tube bending machines. Time and cost savings are achieved, for example, when avoiding any welding of tubes. Multi-stack CNC tube bending machines have proven themselves in this context. They are equipped with stacked tooling, which is capable of bending tubes with different nominal widths on one system without any conversions. Due to the

minimised set-up times, productivity increases massively. An advantage, which international shipyards and plant construction firms have used for themselves over the past years: The bending machine manufacturer Schwarze-Robitec from Cologne has supplied the industry internationally with the multi stack CNC Tube Cold Bending Machines in the most diverse design sizes. One of these systems is the CNC 220 HD MW. The Tube and Section Cold Bending Machine with 32 tons total weight processes tubes with a maximum diameter of 219.1 x 12.7mm – and that for a tube length of up to 6 metres. Despite its size, the system is unusually flexible in handling: With the help of the stacked tooling, up to 70 percent of the set-up time of market-based systems can be saved. It is possible to process tubes of different materials, such as steel, copper-nickel-iron alloys and stainless steel on one tool. At the same time, thin-walled and thick-walled tubes with different diameters can be bent. With this sophisticated tool concept, users have the most varied material standards and tube geometries under control. The set-up times between the different versions are minimal, cause a conversion of the system is not necessary.

Tube Cold Bending Machine CNC 220 HD MW: The stacked tooling can be seen quite clearly at the front. Tubes with different nominal widths can be processed quickly with this.

The CNC 320 HD produces extremely small bending radii of 1.5x tube diameter, even for very large, thin-walled tubes with a diameter of up to 323.9mm.

Bending the Economic Way

The production of complex threedimensional tube systems becomes costintensive particularly because numerous production steps are necessary. Often, each individual step involves optimisation potential with regard to time. An example: to manufacture 3D tube systems, individual, bent tube pieces are welded together and the weld seams then checked. The checking is a time-intensive work step, which is abolished with automatic CNC machine. Thereby, the tube is clamped in the index head and positioned in space by means of the transport unit 3D tube systems without an excess of weld seams. The tubes can be delivered custom-fit to the building site. The use of flanged tubes in shipbuilding also causes additional processing steps in forming, for example the subsequent flanging of finished tube bends. A remedy is flanged tube facilities, which take the flange

www. s h i p b u i l d i n g - i n d ustr y.eu

Schwarz Robitec.indd 53

and sleeve positions before the bending process into consideration. In this manner, tubes which are already flanged can be bent economically. The heavy-duty systems are designed for the forming of double-walled tubes and flanged tubes. These can be implemented in existing systems ready-toinstall after bending. Another ‘time saver’ are marking facilities which mark the positions on the tubes where welds or bypasses are to be carried out after bending. By this procedure, the facility takes the load off the operator. He now no longer has to conduct time-consuming calculations for subsequent determination of the corresponding points on the bent tube.

Tribological Criteria

Tube runs in ships, as well as in offshore structures, offer great potential for material savings because the long stretches of tube cause considerable material costs. The tube

materials used in the industry sector are also very high-quality and need to be installed efficiently. One option is small bending radii. They optimise tube runs enormously in the case of tight space conditions and result in less material input. The CNC 320 HD, for example, produces extremely small bending radii of 1.5 x tube diameter even for large, very thin-walled tubes with a diameter of up to 323.9mm. Similarly tight radii with such large tubes are usually only achieved with much slower and costlier warm bending processes or welding bends. Anyone wanting to produce with material efficiency will also want to avoid residual tube lengths. Machine expansions such as the tube residual length optimisation from Schwarze-Robitec function like ‘cost brakes’. An additional savings potential with regard to material is the dosing of lubricants. These counteract the high tribological loads on tool and work piece, which occur during cold bending. With most lubricating methods, the lubricants are added in large quantities into the tube to be bent. To remove lubricants from the finished bent tubes after bending, the tubes normally need to undergo an elaborate cleaning, where further chemicals are used in the process. A considerably lower consumption is achieved with automatic lubricating systems. With the help of compressed air, they simply moisten the bending mandrel surface and tube inner wall. Through this optimal dosage, both the costs and the effort for the subsequent

With the help of the measuring system integrated in the bending tool, tubeprocessing companies can bend, measure and adjust in a single operation.

cleaning of tube and machine are considerably reduced. The micro-lubrication from Cologne’s bending specialist functions according to this principle: The lines for oil and compressed air run through the mandrel rod all the way to the mandrel. There, the oil is distributed by the compressed air. During the bending process it exits from the mandrel through smalldrilled holes. In this way the system combines a need-based lubrication with minimal lubricant consumption.

Improved Quality Check

A high degree of precision avoids unnecessary waste of expensive materials. Ideally, the tubes are already checked during the bending process and the results corrected, if necessary. The optionally integratable measuring system determines the spring-back value directly after bending of a tube, and the CNC control uses this to calculate the necessary re-bending angle. Re-bending is done directly following this –

www. s h i p b u i l d i n g - i n d ustr y.eu

Schwarz Robitec.indd 55

if desired fully automatically or after release by the machine operator. The result convinces: The bend is carried out precisely to half a degree deviation and nearly every component is a useable good part. The complete process only takes a few seconds per work piece on average. In comparison, measuring and adjusting by the conventional method require about three to five minutes. The operator also benefits from the integrated measuring system: if the previous manual calculation posed an increased source of errors and cost the operator time, the work steps are now considerably simplified. At this point it shows that the operator-friendly and safe production processes are important factors when one is dealing with profitability in shipbuilding and offshore construction. When work steps such as machine re-fits or checking tubes on separate systems, are omitted, the operators have less physical stress and on the other hand it leads to a higher degree of occupational safety.

From solutions for time efficiency to concepts for material savings and all the way to work-simplifying extras: All these need to be taken into consideration when production processes are to be designed economically and sustainably. If nothing else, future-oriented companies can stand out from the competition through the use of corresponding technologies. I. www.schwarze-robitec.com

e intend to build carbon ASVs with hull lengths from 15 to 45+m,” Tuco Marine’s Managing Director Jonas Pedersen explains. “Various ‘standard’ designs for a wide range of applications, as well as unique bespoke solutions requested by the client, will be offered. Our concept philosophy has been to merge the best technologies and solutions available to develop robust vessels, offering state of the art performance, economy in use and other sought after capabilities.”

Reduced Resistance

ASV Tuco Marine Group.indd 57

The collaborators foresee a growing global demand for more efficient and faster vessels. A major market sector is fast offshore support and crew transfer vessels serving offshore wind farms and other installations. Compared with conventional aluminium mono-hulls, the new carbon ASVs will be significantly more fuelefficient and will offer speeds in excess of 40 knots. “Due to the ultra-low hull resistance of an ASV, combined with the weight savings from the carbon sandwich construction, we will enter into a ‘positive

design spiral’. The patented hull form supports 70-80 percent of the operational weight on a cushion of air,” adds ESI General Manager Ulf Tudem. “This reduces the ‘wetted surfaces’ to a minimum.” A reduction in hull resistance of 40 percent compared with conventional ‘wet hulls’ has been documented.

Motion Damping

Reducing weight has been another issue: ASV vessels will benefit from reduced weight – particularly for high-speed operations. The implications of reduced construction weight will be smaller, lighter and less expensive engines, propulsion and main systems. Less fuel load will be required and the highspeed range and payload will be improved. The ASV concept has been extensively tested and documented, for example at SSPA’s towing tank in Sweden. A key design goal has been to deliver a robust and sturdy platform capable of handling tough sea conditions at high speed. Reducing pitch motions and hull slamming have been important. In waves, the air cushion system acts as a motion-damping device, enabling operation at higher speeds with acceptable comfort levels for all on board. The ASV’s unique mono hull, featuring a propulsion gondola on either side of the air cushion chamber, is much less exposed to roll motions than a conventional monohull. This characteristic is valid both at speed and at rest in waves – addressing very important safety issues.

Broad Application

As the majority of fast workboats are operated at a high load factor and for a considerable number of hours per year, the economic benefits with the new concept are considerable. Fuel is an operator’s major cost factor, often representing 70 percent or more of the vessel’s operational cost. With a fuel saving conservatively estimated at 30 percent, the lifetime cost savings for an ASV will be substantial. The first ASV in the carbon range is now under construction at Tuco Marine on the island of Fyn in Denmark. The 17.7 x 5.2m vessel will feature the small Volvo Penta IPS Series 1 pod propulsion drives (2 x 320kW). Tuco will also install a Volvo Penta D3 engine to power the lift fan and for optional hydraulic needs. Crew transfer and windmill service functions are two possible applications. The vessel will feature seating for 12 passengers and 2 crewmembers. The vessel will have an estimated top speed in excess of 40 knots, with a very economical cruise speed of 30+ knots. Fuel consumption for propulsion and lift fan powering combined, is expected to be approximately 4l per NM at a speed of 30 knots. Other applications for the new carbon ASVs include: Naval, customs and police patrol duties as well as pilot, ambulance and fire-fighting support. Larger carbon ASVs are in the pipeline. i. www.tuco.dk i. www.effectships.com
