Editor’s note

Explore, Dream, Discover “TWENTY YEARS FROM NOW YOU WILL BE MORE DISAPPOINTED BY THE THINGS THAT YOU DIDN’T DO THAN BY THE ONES YOU DID DO. SO THROW OFF THE BOWLINES. SAIL AWAY FROM THE SAFE HARBOR. CATCH THE TRADE WINDS IN YOUR SAILS. EXPLORE. DREAM. DISCOVER.” The words of Mark Twain ring a distinctive echo as we reach the end of the year. As we stroll the Super Yacht Pavilion at this years METS, it is evident that companies are pushing the boundaries of innovations and services. Exploring new ideas, dreaming of them coming to life and discovering exactly how a dream can become a reality is a recurring theme. We observe innovations across the entire sector and hear of success stories of companies that manage to progress and develop even in times of crisis. For a teaser of what’s on offer have a look at this issue’s METS preview. Futhermore, we have also taken a close look at German ingenuity and craftsmanship in our Focus on Germany segment. Included are names such as Lurssen and Blohm+Voss and also Fassmer ¨ and their new yacht refit offering. For the first time this year we have also shifted our focus from the superyacht to the super people in our People page, which showcases new appointments in the industry. So what will the New Year have in store for the superyacht industry? Will we continue down the road of bigger, better, best as we embark on a new era of the so-called ‘gigayachts’? From trends observed in other maritime sectors, superyacht clients are demanding bigger platforms to fit more guests and, at the same time, a desire to be closer to the water and the surrounding environment. How will the industry combine the demand for expansion with the need for environmental considerations and the desire for design tranquility? Only time will tell but there are clear trends on the horizon. This year we once again witnessed a shift in the global production map with the US and the UK switching positions on the top builder list by country. We also saw refits and rebuilds growing all over the world with prestigious yards continuing to develop this activity, including Royal Huisman, Feadship, Mondo Marine, Trinity, and RMK. LENA SÄRNBLOM | EDITOR LENA@YNFPUBLISHERS.COM

Exciting times are upon us and we look forward to showcasing all that this industry has to offer.

OUTFITTERS PAGE Cramm Yachting Systems Redevelops Innovative Life Raft Crane Known for its innovative approach to superyacht product development, Cramm is releasing its latest development in deck-oriented life raft cranes. The newly CRAMM designed deck-oriented BOOTH NO. life raft crane is fully manual and gravity METS 2015 operated, which means it does not require an independent power source on board. Due to the manual and gravity operation, the crane can be placed virtually anywhere on the deck. This is especially convenient for those areas where there is less deck space and or independent stored power cannot be accommodated in the vicinity. The CD9000M crane is designed to handle life rafts for twenty occupants (SWL1850kg) and is SOLAS/LSA approved by Lloyd’s Register. i. www.cramm.nl

Modular Jack-up Dock Ravestein Container Pontoon Shipyard and Construction Company (RCP), located in Dodewaard, the Netherlands has a modular jack-up dock ready for use and built under class Bureau Veritas. The Jack-up dock is designed for docking of tugboats, yachts and barges up to 600 tonnes, safely above any swell. It can also be used to transport heavy items from the quay to the sea. It is dismountable for modular, easy worldwide transport. RCP’s core business is the design & construction of marine craft, jack-up platforms, modular pontoons, work vessels, and various other marine/dredging equipment. The basis is the RCP modular system with advantages such as standard ISO container module dimensions and the unique simple and effective Dove Tail Coupling system. i. www.rcpbv.com

Acico Yachts Aquires Jongert

Magnfico Carbon Tender Fender In line with its other high-quality carbon fibre products, Exit Carbon adds a new family, carbon fibre tender fenders, to its range: Magnifico. Venetians have been using Mooring Dolphins for more than 1,300 years to safely moor their boats and ships to the pontoons and piers of Venice. They call them Bricole and they have two disadvantages: they are heavy and fixed to the bottom, so they can’t be moved. With Magnifico, a superyacht swimming platform can be transformed into a safe docking pier when guests arrive. It is lighter, sturdier, more durable, and yet more elegant, than any other tender fender, thanks to the special materials employed and to its engaging design. Magnifico fulfils amazingly its duty to protect the yacht and tender from damage. i. www.exitcarbon.com

Dutch superyacht builder Acico Yachts proudly announced the acquisition of Jongert shipyard in Wieringerwerf. This acquisition guarantees a sustainable future for Jongert, a brand founded in 1953, which has since been renowned for its world-class sailing yachts. The acquisition also strengthens Acico Yachts so it can continue to expand its activities related to building and refitting of large superyachts. Both brands will soon be located and fully operational at the shipyard in Wieringerwerf. These facilities cover a site that spans 44,000 m2, with direct waterfront access, three large ACICO YACHTS production halls and three dedicated workshops BOOTH NO. devoted to metal work, carpentry, paint work and varnishing. MARIN’s Ambitious Collaboration Projects

The SunBox has Arrived

To tackle the increasingly complex design and build questions, MARIN presented four Joined Industry Projects (JIPs) dedicated to the Yacht Industry at this years MYS. JIP’s are proposed in four areas: design of underwater exhaust scoops, onboard comfort, sloshing of water in swimming pool and embarking and disembarking issues of beach clubs. JIP’s are covering typically pre-competitive items and aim at generating knowledge, which is shared among all participants. Based on such knowledge, one can develop its own product or innovation in a later stage. Sharing ideas and issues to improve knowledge on certain topics, can potentially create new innovation and products, which will benefit the whole industry. MARIN plays the role of an independent initiator and coordinator. i. www.marin.nl

Suitable for superyachts, luxury hotels, private residences, swimming pools and wet-bar complexes, SunBox’s contemporary, and stylish deck furniture design is flexible and functional. Whether being used as a sun lounger or a bench, the SunBox will enhance any location all year round. Its ‘lock-box’ feature, ideal for storing valuables, ensures peace of mind when you are away from your sunbed. The SunBox is portable and has adjustable backrest offering four levels of comfort. Folding it into two also offers a compact, stackable footprint for storage. i. www.deksmartint.com

knowledge relates to the pretreatment of various substrates, both on new vessels and during maintenance, the properties and peculiarities of the various products, product application and application conditions prescribed by suppliers. When all these factors are controlled the risk with regard to achieving the agreed quality standard is minimised.

Causes of Concern Reasons quality standards are not met can be due to insufficient substrate profile or clean substrates, excessively low temperatures when products are applied and harden, excessively low relative air humidity levels when the various products are applied and insufficient time

www. s u p e r y a c h t - i n d ustr y.c om

MyPai.indd 49

between sanding, cleaning and application of the top coat. This also means that certain jobs, such as applying the next coat, spraying the top coat, etc. cannot or should not be carried out despite the time pressure. The chance of failure and accompanying risk that the job has to be redone will ultimately increase costs.

Time and Budget In addition to the knowledge of the yacht painter, it is vital to have enough time and money in order to deliver the agreed quality standard. In many cases, not having enough time forces a yacht painter to make compromises in terms of the hardening process, dealing with local conditions, and cleaning for example. When the budget is insufficient

a yacht painter is often forced to make the mentioned compromises.

Independently Informed When looking for high-level technical and aesthetic quality, Mr Heeterbrij recommends not looking for the cheapest solution, but collecting quotes from a number of yacht painters/shipyards that have a proven track record to deliver results. “Make sure the budget is sufficient and there is enough time for the requested works. lohm+Voss boasts a build portfolio of nearly 1,000 vessels across its 138-year history as well as an impressive track record of complex refits and conversions on yachts, cruise liners and oil and gas platforms. However, it is the unique and iconic superyachts that have really brought the brand to prominence in recent years.

independently from refit and repair activity. The full integration of the shipyard and repair division will ensure that clients benefit from a wider range of expertise and sharing of knowledge as well as a far more comprehensive offering throughout the lifecycle of the yacht. The yacht division will be based in Hamburg with the aim to bring all of the unrivalled naval architecture, ship theory, project management and engineering expertise together in one location. The goal is to offer customers the possibility of a true ‘one stop shop’ centre of excellence for the whole lifecycle of their yacht.

The exterior paint can be fully customised while the standard paint option includes a white hull and superstructure with a dark grey-burgundy tone framing the windows to the lounge and atrium. The tank testing, class approvals and detailed engineering phase have all been completed and the first vessel is now ready to begin construction. The next step will see significant further investment in steel and major components to ensure new clients are able to take delivery of a top quality, customised 80-metre yacht in just 30 months from the contract date.

Superyacht Lifecycle Management

With a track record of stunning creations, previous Blohm+Voss projects have created spectacular results. This was showcased in the collaboration with Zaha Hadid to design a new concept for a family of superyachts. A 128-metre master prototype that will eventually spawn five, fully-engineered, 90-metre “Unique Circle Yachts.” The overall design concepts stem from fluid dynamics and underwater ecosystems. The 90-metre JAZZ yacht is the first of the five Unique Circle Yachts that has being technically specified and detailed by Blohm+Voss.

Investment in the BV80 Project The brand new 80-metre yacht designed by Eidsgaard Design has generated huge interest.

The development of a comprehensive new lifecycle service is already well under way. With vast experience in the construction, maintenance, repair and operation of commercial vessels, Blohm+Voss is in a unique position to help clients reduce operating costs considerably through the integration of continuous monitoring equipment into new yachts and the remote management of maintenance and repair schedules. Combined with a lifecycle maintenance agreement, a Blohm+Voss build also means that clients will be able to benefit from a lifetime warranty, available on all new yachts.

MERGING EFFICIENCY, COST AND ENVIRONMENTALISM

New and Refitted Yachts in the age of IMO TIER III THE YACHTING WORLD HAS LONG BEEN PREPARING FOR NEW, STRICTER legal regulations. Owners are best placed to appreciate the beauty and fragility of the world’s seas and contribute to its preservation.

A

s a leading expert in underwater exhaust outlets and water-cooled exhaust systems in the superyacht industry, Marquip understands the conflict owners face between performance and environmental considerations.

New Times Ahead From 1 January 2016, new builds will be subject to IMO TIER III legislation regarding NOx reduction from the moment the keel is laid. This change has been known for some time now, and MarQuip has played a pioneering role in smoothing out this implementation process. But what considerations if any, need to be made for existing superyachts? For the time being at least, as long as no changes are made to the functioning of the diesel engines, the relevant regulations do not require compliance with

IMO TIER III. However, just because the new rules are not compulsory does not mean it is not in everyone’s interest to respect them. MarQuip has witnessed an increase in environmental awareness in the requests received. It is evident that owners and charter guests alike are becoming more and more aware that the beautiful places they visit on a yacht, are often the world’s most vulnerable.

Finding the Balance The aftermarket paints a different picture. If during a refit, an owner decides to modify the engines or replace them (since 1 January 2000 and above 130 bkW), IMO TIER III will fully apply. MarQuip assists clients to make their existing yachts TIER III-ready by choosing the right partners, working closely together with

yards and refit specialists, and by deploying an independent service team. MarQuip also aims to support and coordinate the certification process and has carried out various case studies to map how an existing fleet can continue to operate at maximum efficiency. Being fully committed to engineering, manufacturing and delivery related to this innovative solution for integrated Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology, Marquip set up a ‘ghost project’ to examine how to make an existing yacht TIER III compliant. This project was based on extensive calculations, 3D engine room scans and equipment mock-ups.

process. The first step in preparing for a TIER III conversion involves an on board survey. This survey examines existing exhaust system, the engine room and tank layout, and takes 3D scans of the engine room and interfaces. The survey also collects the necessary data on design, engine performance, fuel capacity, quality and the operational conditions. The 3D scan is then transferred into usable drawings and a new exhaust layout design incorporating the SCR system is created. Next an assessment of the operational costs is made and a detailed quotation for design, supply, installation, commission and certification is created. This then provides the framework to begin preliminarily planning. Following this process delivers a solution, which is designed to fit the bill from a physical and financial perspective.

SKILLED SHIPYARD EXTENDS SERVICE OFFERING

Fassmer – Full Speed Ahead AS A DYNAMIC FAMILY-OWNED COMPANY IN ITS FIFTH GENERATION,

Expanding Services

THE FASSMER SHIPYARD HAS GAINED AN EXCELLENT REPUTATION

Holger and Harald Fassmer today lead a company that offers services within Shipbuilding, Lifeboats, Deck Equipment, Wind Power, Composite Technology and After-Sales Service. A recent exciting addition to the Fassmer portfolio is within the yacht and yacht refit division. Two years ago, Fassmer set up the division with the successful completion of an Italian 70-metre superyacht

SINCE ITS ESTABLISHMENT IN 1850 BY JOHANNES FASSMER. THE foundation of the company was built on knowledge, expertise and perseverance, which are sentiments that continue to this day. While the initial days saw Fassmer’s focus be on small wooden boats and lifeboats, today with more than 900 employees, the company has expanded its service package to several business areas.

refit. The refit was such a success that the superyacht has been at Fassmer twice since for major refits. The on-time delivery within budget proved to Fassmer that yacht refits were an interesting option. Yacht refits have since become an important step for the yard which has the right facilities to service this market taking all individual needs into account and without neglecting their commercial shipbuilding division and longstanding customers.

Fassmer production site in Berne.

Fully Equipped Fassmer has two production sites capable of building and refitting vessels within walking distance of each other. Both productions sites in Berne, Germany are located on the river Weser, approximately 40 km away from the North Sea. An additional production site is situated in Rechlin, Germany, and is reserved for the production of yacht equipment. Fassmer’s yacht equipment combines high functionality, comfort and

safety with a great touch of luxury offering all types of boarding options: accommodation ladders, bridge gangways and stern passerelle. Additionally Fassmer provides shell doors, telescopic masts and crane beams with a highlight being their elegant, state-of-the-art yacht tender that serves as a lifeboat, rescue boat and tender all in one. The yacht equipment is available in powder-coated aluminum, stainless steel or GRP/CFK for long lasting beauty.

Design Delivery New to the Fassmer program is an Explorer Yacht design. Based on a 65-metre survey vessel design, the Explorer Yacht offers a wide range of benefits. It features outstanding sea-going stability and maneuvering characteristics and is fully SOLAS certified. With dieselelectric propulsion system combined with an extensive noise and vibration reduction technology. The Explorer Yacht shows the outcome of an experienced research and design department as well as modern production facilities providing exceptional capacity for innovation and ingenious technical solutions. Reflecting on a tradition in design and construction of custom-build, special purpose vessels, Fassmer’s expertise is truly an advantage as they continue their successful course in the superyacht world.

Drive for the Future At the end of the 1980s, the current owners Friedrich and Peter Lürßen took the decision to intensify the construction and manufacture of individual luxury yachts, establishing it as a second business activity alongside naval shipbuilding. This has proven to be a success with 25 of the Top 100 yachts today being built by Lürssen (8 of the Top 20) – including such milestones in the shipbuilding industry as Carinthia VII, the sailing yacht Eos, and Azzam – currently the longest private yacht in the world at 180 metres. “As a family company it makes us proud and happy to be able to look back, in a turbulent industry, on 140 years of successful shipbuilding history on the River Weser”, emphasizes Peter Lürßen. “At the same time, our company anniversary motivates us as a family business to continue manufacturing unique ships for the global market together with our employees and to successfully live up to our great-grandfather’s motto to impress through performance and quality.”

The Golden Odyssey

Redwood

Lürssen’s Project Tatiana has blossomed into Golden Odyssey, a 123-metre yacht. There have been few details available about Golden Odyssey as Lürssen has kept her under a publicity restriction but it is thought she has a 20-metre beam, a volume of 7,600 gross tonnes and an ocean crossing range. Golden Odyssey was launched in mid-March and soon after moved from her shed at Lürssen’s facility in Lemwerder, Germany into a quay for finishing touches. She is thought to be constructed with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure and to be designed by Martin Francis while her interior is rumoured to be the work of the late Alberto Pinto.

The sale of the 139-metre Lürssen superyacht Project Redwood was announced during this years Monaco Yacht Show by Robert Moran of shipyard Moran Yacht & Ship. Redwood will accommodate as many as 36 guest in 20 staterooms on board, with unique amenities to be announced throughout the build process and likely to include at least one helipad, an elevator, a Jacuzzi and/or swimming pool and Zero Speed Stabilizers, as per a yacht of this size and calibre. Her propulsion system is currently undisclosed. Once completed, she will showcase another collaboration between the teams that worked together to create Quattroelle. The superyacht is expected for delivery in 2019 to a U.S.-based owner. Project Redwood looks like she will meet the growing demand for chartering superyachts over 100 metres.

INNOVATIVE AND RELIABLE

THE ENTHUSIASM OF THE PEOPLE WHO WORK AT EMIGREEN IS STRIKING. THE INHERENT NATURE OF THE BUSINESS MEANS THAT EVERYONE IS FOCUSED ON IMPROVEMENT AND INNOVATION. THE leader of the team, Niko Dalpis, is a real pioneer. He is a practical and visionary engineer, driven by the opportunities that guarantee emission reductions. The Emigreen motto is therefore: ‘For the sake of our environment’.

Passion and Performance The innovative working method is accompanied by a large dose of reliability. “Because however important it is to innovate in the emission reduction market, it is even more important to guarantee safety and continuity”, according to Paul Tilmans, who is responsible for Sales & Business Development at Emigreen. He enthusiastically talks about the passion with which developments are devised, tested and applied. “Our advanced soot filter technology is an excellent example of this. The Diesel Particle Filter (DPF) in combination with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is the answer to a greener environment and quality. The Emigreen systems are subjected to the most extensive testing and must meet the highest standards. The use of innovative burner technology and state-of-the-art controller systems have resulted in extremely reliable systems where the number of faults have been reduced to the absolute minimum. ‘Reliability’ is a fundamental criterion; our systems provide top performance for the long term.”

Science on the Water Emigreen forms the bridge between science and the maritime sector. It is one of the leading innovators in the area of DPF and SCR. Numerous vessels, including a large number of www. s u p e r y a c h t - i n d ustr y.c om

Emigreen.indd 39

super yachts, are already in service with Emigreen systems on-board. The hazardous emissions from each of these vessels are now so low that they easily meet the EU Stage IV standards. The successes that Emigreen has booked in the last fifteen years concern aftertreatment in a wide range of projects. A prestigious project that Emigreen worked on was the 99-metre long Feadship that was completed in 2013. It also worked on an illustrious 60m+ charter yacht that has operated for 15,000 hours. Moreover... the largest sailing yacht in the world – Project X – is equipped with advanced Emigreen technology. Mr Tilmans explained how extraordinary it is to work on this project: “It is conformation of our capabilities. We stand for innovation and reliability; these qualities are recognised with our participation in this project and that is something we are extremely proud of. We are looking forward to the first sea trials!”

Research and Development To continue to achieve our goal requires massive investments to be made in Research & Development. Both in financial and human terms. Emigreen employs creative engineers with a nose for innovation. In addition to the experienced staff, the new generation of

technical talent is also represented. Under the leadership of Dalpis, the young employees are taught the tricks of the trade and they in turn supply new ideas and knowledge. The work is carried out in a multi-disciplinary way, where it is not so much the products but more the total solution that plays a leading role. We continually think about new, pioneering features that add value to the solution. For instance, there are systems that can be tracked and operated throughout the world via an internet connection. The systems are equipped with among other things OBD: On Board Diagnostics that show that the system is active and that it is doing what it is supposed to be doing. These developments ensure greater flexibility in maintenance and service. Customised purity Mr Tilmans states: “Efficient, reliable and controllable: these are the properties that characterise the Emigreen systems. Our designs are always customised and we primarily respond to the wishes and requirements of the customer, to which we add the appropriate technology. Here, comfort, clean shipping and sustainability play the determining role and result in attractive, customised solutions that require the minimum of maintenance. It is extraordinary to be part of an organisation that pursues ‘purity’, in the widest sense of the word... Emigreen is looking forward to the future.”

FOCUS YACHT DESIGN INTRODUCES STUNNING INTERIOR

Step On Board the Irimari THE 63-METRE IRIMARI, DESIGNED BY ESPEN ØINO AND BUILT BY SUNRISE YACHTS WAS SHOWCASED DURING THE MONACO YACHT Show. The interior design was entrusted to Focus Yacht Design (FYD) from the beginning of the project in May 2012.

T

homas Mühe, Co-founder of FYD, states: “It is a major satisfaction to be in a position to demonstrate our capabilities to the entire industry by having this beautiful yacht at the Monaco Yacht Show. We had designed spectacular interiors before but, given the confidential nature of the projects, they didn’t receive the exposure we were hoping for. We see this development as a decisive moment in the history of our company and we hope to share it with our clients, partners and friends within the industry.”

Freedom of Expression Irimari’s owners wanted something fresh and new and were willing to create an unusual and unexpected interior. This represented both an opportunity and a risk, but FYD found a common comprehension of the mission and as a result the final interior differs only marginally from the initial concepts. FYD had the rare opportunity to work with a great degree of freedom, with few requirements and restrictions and to start from a clean slate. Despite all its sophistication the yacht’s interior represents a balance between the impressive and the cosy, a place for living as well as entertaining. Co-founder Christian Schäfer adds: “The entire team at Focus is particularly proud of having completed project Irimari and to have met its owner’s expectations. Based on Espen Øino’s concept, this is a yacht of particularly large volume in its category that creates opportunities to fully express our vision as interior designers. The execution, performed in close collaboration with the shipyard team, the build captain and the interior outfitting company, is truly successful and equals in our opinion the best standards in the industry.”

FOCUS ON GERMANY

A yacht is a medium to experience nature and the sea with style and elegance... A Holistic Approach A yacht is obviously not a house and therefore cannot be designed with a static environment in mind. A yacht is a medium to experience nature and the sea with style and elegance and therefore needs to integrate the outside and the inside. FYD have taken natural colours and elements of the sea, and integrated them into an overall theme and into the artwork of each room, whether these elements are shown in mosaics, wall coverings, collages, paintings or video installations. FYD refrained from using a large living space as a field for experimentation with an abundance of different shapes, colors or materials. The basis for composition is rather the variation of a common design in order to achieve spaces that flow into each other and form a sequence with matching surfaces. Therefore the different rooms create a calm and inviting environment without ever being boring.

Enhancing Features Throughout the yacht, decoration is always confined to dedicated spaces and follows a distinctive composition. Features that ensure the individuality and purpose of each room purposefully grab ones attention. These highlights never compete with each other but are designed to complement and enhance each other. Therefore most of the loose furniture and light fixtures are purposefully designed by FYD for this yacht. The holistic appeal of matching colours, surfaces and materials fuses in an abundance of impressive details, which are only revealed in close proximity. Delicate pilaster strips are modulated throughout the interior and made of copper, polished steel or even stitched seams in leather walls. A selection of light and dark woods such as bleached oak and Macassar forms a common structure which leads through an array of marine motives: an abstract kelp forest in the main staircase with moving bubbles on a 16 feet high HD-screen, a shoal of lacquered fishes in the owner’s suite, a ceramic billow artwork in the VIP cabin and virtual waves within the guest cabins. The variety of materials

www. s u p e r y a c h t - i n d ustr y.c om

Focus Yacht Design.indd 43

used includes bleached oak, Makassar wood, copper, stainless steel, marble, leather, fabric and felt. FYD admired the remarkable flexibility of the people at Sunrise who where eager to explore new paths and to accommodate unconventional requests. The level of support by the yard was outstanding and the collaboration with their main supplier Ulutas also proved a success as Ulutas excelled with superb craftsmanship and helped with many innovative solutions in order to achieve uncommon details and new features. The final result is truly spectacular.

Company Profile: Focus Yacht Design was founded in 2007 and is run by the partners Thomas Mühe, Henning Krohn and Christian Schäfer. The company specializes in the development of yacht concepts as well as in exterior styling and interior design. After the design of two 73-metre motoryachts built at HDW and Nobiskrug in Germany, the design firm tackled a number of smaller production yachts between 20 and 37 metres long. Currently FYD is working on a number of exciting projects ranging between 30 to 99 metres.

PAINT SYSTEMS & COATINGS

A Coating Celebration SUPERIOR MARINE COATINGS

WHEN SELECTING THE RIGHT TOPCOAT PAINT FOR A YACHT, IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THERE IS MUCH MORE TO CONSIDER THAN SIMPLY CHOOSING WHAT IS EASIEST OR LEAST EXPENSIVE TO APPLY. Alexseal believes in providing a superior product, and there is a never-ending effort that goes into this primary purpose.

N

ot only are these the most advanced products on the marine market, but a diverse team of chemists, engineers and technicians at the brand’s Hamburg lab at Mankiewicz Gebr. & Co. are always working together to improve the existing formulas and systems to provide products that are userfriendly and can achieve outstanding results in a variety of climates. Since Alexseal’s formal debut in 2004, the topcoat system has undergone many improvements, in a genuine aim to continuously improve.

Award Acknowledgement Established in 1895, Mankiewicz is one of Germany’s traditional paint manufacturers and a market leader in the production of both solventbased and water-dilutable high-tech coating systems. Based in Hamburg, Mankiewicz supplies high-quality paint products to various different markets such as machine construction, capital goods, automotive, aviation, railway, medical technology and yachts. The in-house research and development department develops

paint systems in all colour shades, gloss grades and textures, tailor-made to suit each customer’s requirements. Mankiewicz’s quest to excel was recently recognised during the prestigious German Company Summit in Essen as a ‘Top 100 Most Innovative Medium-Sized Company’. A ‘Top 100’ mentor and famous science journalist, Ranga Yogeshwar presented the parent company of Alexseal with the award, which was created over 20 years ago.

ALEXSEAL

Double Celebration Mankiewicz has two reasons to celebrate this year. In addition to being awarded the ‘Top 100’ seal, the company also celebrates its 120-year anniversary. Originally founded as the independent subsidiary of an English paint factory, the company started out producing paint for coaches according to original English formulations. Nowadays, more than 1,100 employees worldwide develop and sell innovative paints for high-tech sectors such as the aviation, automotive and general industry markets. Of these employees, 300 engineers

work in the service sector. “Our main focus is on product innovations, for example on paints with optimum resistances which protect surfaces from corrosion and other weather influences. Our major goal lies in the long-term value maintenance of the commodities of our international customers”, states Mankiewicz Managing Director Michael Grau.

Investing in Innovation The company’s philosophy of the globally active paint manufacturer is clearly focused on innovations which will benefit customers. Investments in the area of research and development as well as a state-of-the-art production department are the foundation for success. An example of this is the pioneering of an optimised manufacturing process, or OMP, which has resulted in substantial improvements

to the flow of topcoat products. Premium polyester polyurethane manufacturing, such as the Alexseal process, requires the best ingredients. Chemists use a very specific combination of polyol resins and catalysts to achieve a reaction that targets 100% molecular cross-linkage, meaning every molecule is matched, mated and connected with another one during the curing process. Unmatched molecules can lead to a breached finish and the resulting disappointments of lost protection and beauty. Cross-linkage is the primary reason polyester based polyurethanes retain gloss better than competing products. This molecular crosslinking creates a tougher finish that stands up better to real world wear and tear on a yacht. One can see this in practice in places such as longer lasting non-skid decks and resistance to damage from rubbing fenders on a hull-side.

Tough Repairs Repairs to a yacht’s surface are inevitable regardless of how tough a paint is. Guests will bump the dinghy around, crews can make mistakes, and the habits of other boaters is unpredictable. When a mishap does occur to the topcoat, the initial choice in paint technologies can mean the difference between an easy, seamless repair and an unsightly frustration. Like Alexseal, today’s aliphatic polyester polyurethane coatings are comprised of resins in which the pigment thoroughly saturates the entire thickness of the paint film. Traditional polyurethanes on the contrary, separate out into a clear surface coat, with the colour or pigment underneath. When a repair is needed, these traditional coatings require buffing and sanding all the way through the clear portion of the finish in order to affect the colour beneath. This need to deeply abrade the coating during repairs can result in a prominent ‘halo effect’, and makes completing a seamless repair much more difficult – even for the most experienced of technicians.

The Choice is Yours While acrylic paint can be repaired like a fullpigment polyurethane, acrylics are much softer and do not provide the durability and resistance to harsh marine elements that premium polyester polyurethanes can. The softness of acrylic coatings also makes them less than optimal for nonskid and other high traffic or scratch prone areas of a yacht. For instance, a soft coating often jeopardises a satisfactory colour match between a bulkhead and cockpit sole, as the areas wear at different rates. By

www. s u p e r y a c h t - i n d ustr y.c om

Mankiewicz.indd 47

their very nature, acrylics just don’t work very well in these circumstances. That is why experienced yachtsmen and applicators usually choose polyester polyurethane when they seek a highly durable finish. When choosing a polyurethane topcoat, there is an alternative to compromising between traditional aviation style polyester polyurethanes – which provide the hardest surface with the highest chemical resistance – and automotive style acrylic polyurethanes – that are softer with quick drying and easy to repair characteristics. One no longer has to choose between a hard to scratch, yet hard to repair, polyester system and an easy to repair, yet easy to scratch, acrylic based system. Alexseal provides a superior solution – designed from the molecular level on up – to excel in all marine applications.

Looking Forward Recently, Mankiewicz broke ground on a new ‘Ingenieurwerk’, or Engineering building, shining light on the company’s future growth and ongoing commitment to research, development and networking. With employee education and training in mind, this new facility will feature an environment that staff, affiliates and customers will thoroughly enjoy. Designed and engineered by planwerk elbe, the purpose of the ‘Ingenieurwerk’ building is not only to have a growing space for Mankiewicz employees, but also to house close affiliate companies such as

New Engineering building will house Mankiewicz employees and affiliates.

UMCO Umwelt Consult, who handles all of Mankiewicz’s safety data sheets and environmental compliance. A number of close Hamburg business allies will jointly utilise the facility’s new marketing and IT facilities, with companies in a variety of fields planning to move into these new premises. This collaborative co-working space will increase information flow between companies which will in-turn benefit customers due to the network’s synergetic effect and increased efficiency.

lack of experience is often the reason why high-quality paintwork is and becomes so expensive according to Mypai Senior Surveyor Marten Heetebrij. “During various inspections, I worked alongside many different shipyards and yacht painters and I concluded that

inexperience at all levels is the cause of failing to achieve the agreed quality standard, or of achieving it via a complicated route,” says Mr Heeterbrij. Extensive knowledge can have a highly positive effect on the end result of paint jobs and strongly reduces the risks of warranty claims. This

BEHIND EVERY SUPERYACHT YARD AND SUPPLIER IS A STORY. BEHIND EVERY OWNER IS A STORY. And, inevitably, behind every newly launched superyacht or product is a story, which blends all of the above and more. WORDS BY JEROEN SIRAG

T

wo years ago the HISWA Holland Yachting Group started a new campaign focused on the essential elements that make our members unique. This was in some ways an easy task as every member has an incredible story to tell, from the yards with roots back to the 1800s to the supply companies who have built their reputation on next-generation technical wizardry. But it’s also a challenge to synthesise their essence into a few words and a personal picture. I think we’ve done rather well and you can judge for yourself on our new website or read about it in the METS preview on page 10 which showcases some of our members.

Heritage, Innovation and Creativity The three pillars that all HISWA Holland Yachting Group members have in common, are Heritage, Innovation and Creativity. At heart, the stories of our members are of extraordinary people working at the yards and supply companies making extraordinary yachts for extraordinary clients. You have to have a creative mind to buy a superyacht. Spending millions on a floating home is not a logical act, regardless of how much pleasure it brings. The vast majority of owners are or have been successful business people, and the business case for creating a one-off custom superyacht would probably not pass muster if subjected to ‘normal’ standards of production efficiency. But life isn’t all about business and there are many wealthy men and women out there who like to be different, to think outside of the box, to own a superyacht that suits their tastes and travel plans, not those of the owners before them. And, just as is the case in other industries, the initial expense of buying a premium quality product, which stands out from the crowd usually, has a positive impact on the eventual resale value. You also enjoy using it more!

Going Dutch The creativity of our individual members and the HISWA Holland Yachting Group as a collective is one of the reasons why ‘Going Dutch’ remains the best possible roadmap to follow after owners have made the emotional choice to buy a superyacht. The same applies to the captains, senior crew members, purchasing & project managers and owners representatives who play such a key role in the decision-making process. Yards and marine equipment suppliers work hand-in-hand to come up with creative ideas in order to realise the creative dreams of clients and their representatives. And regardless of how future oriented this creativity may be, the rich experience of the past certainly plays an equal role. It’s impossible to overestimate the importance of heritage to the Dutch superyacht industry. Our international orientation in the maritime world dates back to the Golden Age of the 1600s when half of all Europe’s trade was transported by ships from the Netherlands. We Dutch can also lay claim to some major milestones in the history of yachting, even being responsible for the word ‘yacht’ – it’s the English take on the Dutch word ‘jacht’. In fact, the first wealthy individual to be presented with a ‘superyacht’ (or the 17th-century equivalent thereof) was the British Charles II. Boats of all shapes and sizes has been in the DNA of the Dutch and many of today’s yards and supply companies can trace their roots back to the 19th-century. It is these generations of craftsmen that later enabled Holland to put superyachts on the world map. The third pillar of innovation is also connected to the past. You’ve all enjoyed looking at our dams; windmills, polders and canals, but they have served a purpose in a country

so susceptible to flooding. Winning the battle against the sea has seen us celebrate great accomplishments in engineering and technology, and these innovations influenced further sectors.

Never-ending Story By its very definition, innovation is a story that never comes to an end. We take pride in shaping the ongoing story of superyachting based on the latest developments and on the trends that no one has even thought of yet. In that respect you could say we write the story, something, which is backed up by the latest financial figures showing that the Dutch superyacht industry is thriving. The order book for 2014 is at the same levels as prior to the economic crisis which began in 2007, with 27 major orders worth over EUR 2 billion. Sixteen extraordinary superyachts were also delivered during 2014. It is clearer than ever that Dutch yachting has become a brand in its own right, a brand with an excellent reputation that brought all our main yards through the financial recession virtually untouched. Export Director at HISWA Holland Yachting Group

In fact, many of our members are busy with expansion. Holland Jachtbouw, Feadship, Mulder Shipyard, Oceanco, Amels, Royal Huisman, Hakvoort and Heesen Yachts have all opened new facilities recently or have ambitious plans to do so. This can also be partly attributed to the increasing demand for longer yachts, often built for repeat clients displaying once again the brand loyalty that Dutch yards inspire.

Changing the Narrative Like every good story, there are times when changing circumstances change the narrative. In this respect I am proud of the way that our members rode out the global recession storm and continued to invest in the future in a way that gave (and continues to give) complete confidence to their clients. While there is always a degree of competition between the leading motor and sailing yacht yards, the joint branding and association within the HISWA Holland Yachting Group and the overall sense of community within the industry ensures that the Good Ship Cooperation remains at the head of the fleet. There have been lots of good new stories to tell over the past year. A fine example is the cooperation between Vitters and Oceanco on an 85-metre sailing yacht. Feadship crossed the hundred-metre mark, one of six impressive new Feadships launched in the past twelve months. Holland Jachtbouw and Claasen continue to lead the way in the J Class revolution. Heesen Yachts unveiled a new breed of 50-metre fast displacement motoryacht, and Mulder Shipyard signed an order for its largest allaluminium yacht to date. Our equipment suppliers have also had some major successes. DMS Holland launched an impressive new roll

damping system, Hydromar unveiled the prototype of its Seascape bathing platform and Imtech Marine launched its new RHServiceNow app. The naval architects at Vripack were also making waves with its striking FLOW yacht design. Partly thanks to our new campaign, the HISWA Holland Yachting Group is also attracting new members, such as Van der Valk Shipyard and DMS Holland. The power of this association lies in our justifiable claim to be a specialist in superyacht construction. This is turn based on the long experience both of our individual members and the group as a whole. Actually, ever since the days of the VOC, the Dutch have consistently proven their export acumen and reliability when it comes to trade.

New Tales Geographical and market considerations continue to play a role in this ongoing story and in our determination to go to areas where fresh tales are being told. The HISWA Holland Yachting Group is focused on tapping into new audiences and markets, hence our recent partnerships with the prestigious TEFAF Art Fair in Maastricht and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. You will also see that we are taking a very different way to profiling our association and members at Monaco Yacht Show and at METS in Amsterdam for example. The HISWA Holland Yachting Group members hope to see you at one of those events or elsewhere during the coming year so we can share more stories together!

DEVELOPS AND MANUFACTURES SERIES AND CUSTOM COMPONENTS AND ACCESSORIES in aluminum and stainless steel for the marine leisure industry. Its catalogue boasts hundreds products including: gangways, cranes, tender lifts and stern platforms, multifunctional platform, beach and side boarding ladders, glass and watertight doors, windows and weatherboards, pilot seats, tables, deck and interior furnishing and small size accessories.

Handles and Leading Products The new sliding door handle, patented in 2014 (the last patent registered for handle dates back to 1914), has already sold an impressive amount less than a year after it was launched. Produced to meet a specific request of one of Opacmare’s main customers, this handle has a revolutionary feature as it can be opened in three different places. With a single movement, the handle, which is not turned but lifted, allows the user to open it in three places and the internal mechanism makes it possible to block the opening at any level. This handle can be applied to any door and so also to Opacmare’s pantograph side doors (the result of a design aimed at creating flush doors, with movement inspired by that of train carriage doors). The handle is made of AISI 316L polished stainless steel but with all-glass external aesthetics making it almost invisible once closed. A small button on the side makes it possible to open the two panels towards the exterior, thanks to a frame on the upper and lower sides of the door. Once open, it occupies very little space, facilitating freedom of movement along the side walkaways. The two panels can be opened manually, with the famous handle (which can be placed where desired), or mechanically using the button. The door is completely watertight,

a significant feature because there are no fully waterproof side doors on the market except for some models that use inflatable seals.

The Transformer A multifunction customisable hydraulic platform that can be fitted to the stern or side and function as a gangway, bathing ladder, tender lift and goods lift. It can be used on big boats from 20 metres to 100 metres and also on boats as small as 40 feet. It is available in several patented models and when fully open, triples the depth of the stern. Available in nineteen versions, with four, five, six, seven or eight steps, it has a lifting capacity that goes beyond 2,800 kg. All models in the 3382 series are also

available with the structure in carbon fibre, which makes it much lighter, almost half of the weight. The Transformer can be used with the 3370 series pop-out system: a mobile platform that flattens the teak walkaway when the Transformer is open, eliminating obstacles and steps. This is specially designed for the side embarking of passengers, wheelchairs and vehicles.

PIONEERING DEVELOPMENTS FROM ROYAL HUISMAN

Elfje

WITH STUNNING AESTHETICS

Next Generation

AND AMENITIES, ELFJE IS NOT

The design brief called for a luxury yacht finessed to deliver across all criteria and remain cutting-edge well into the future. For this reason, Elfje has been called a ‘NextGEN’ ketch to highlight her owner’s focus on maximising innovation, sustainability and energy efficiency. Usage was a key component of the project planning to identify important ‘must have’ attributes, as well as possible constraints. In broad terms, the owner wanted a beautiful sailing yacht to go anywhere in the world, from tropical cruising grounds to the higher latitudes as far as Antarctica and the Arctic.

ONLY BEAUTIFUL TO BEHOLD BUT ALSO HAS THE HIGH-TECH systems and sailing performance to match. Royal Huisman delivers a luxury yacht capable of cruising in comfort and racing with speed.

Cruise Control To meet the owner’s wide-ranging brief and apart from the obvious requirement for

2 6 | S Y I 2 0 1 5 | Vo l um e 1 0 | Issue 4

Elfje.indd 26

seaworthiness in all conditions, the yacht had to be equipped for remote extended cruising with adequate fuel, provisioning and operational resources. In the interests of operating the yacht safely in exotic regions, the installed systems had to be advanced, but also relatively simple and thoroughly reliable. From the start there was a strong emphasis on performance. Not just for the enjoyment of swift passage-making, but also because the owner intended to race Elfje. That meant the hydraulic sail handling systems had to be fast and efficient across the full spectrum. Whereas passage-making might require two or three hydraulic functions at one time, a race environment with up to 30 competitive sailors on board could mean upward of fifteen power– hungry hydraulic functions being called upon simultaneously.

Decked Out On deck, an expanse of teak decking flows from fore to aft with borderless, flush deck hatches and under-deck hinges to add a final measure of visual simplicity. Further evidence of attentive execution can be seen with the zero maintenance practicality of electro-polished stainless steel hatch gutters and custom designed steering consoles in teak-veneered carbon composite. Parts of the deckhouse trim were left unvarnished to provide an overall feeling of ‘lightness’. A below waterline anchor system has been custom designed and fitted to neatly disguise the anchors without sacrificing functionality, and a carbon hatch on the foredeck can be lowered to conceal the profile of the yacht’s main 5.8-metre Novurania tender with deep V-shaped

hull form. When the tender is deployed, the recess creates a generous forward lounge area at anchor or may be closed to provide a completely flush foredeck.

Environmentally Efficient “We see operational and environmental considerations as inseparable,” says the owner’s Project Director, Jeremy Pochman. “An important goal was to minimise our environmental impact; if we gain appreciable operational efficiencies in doing so, so much the better. Translating that into the technologies employed, we were looking for effective gains that would work 100% but we did not want to push the boundaries so far that reliability would be compromised.” To this end, the systems architecture developed by Royal Huisman’s R&D team in conjunction with Whisper Power was vital. The heart of the design combines a flywheel generator, variable speed generators, fast and flexible hydraulic and electrical power delivery systems, and ‘intelligent’ Li-ion battery

Elfje.indd 28

banks. This provided major efficiencies and excellent redundancy. Smaller and up to 2,000 kg lighter than conventional generators, variable speed generators are also quieter and consume up to 10% less fuel because they can run at a lower rpm to meet actual loads, rather than at a constant speed focused on peak loads.

Smart Solution Backed up by her ‘smart’ peak power storage bank connected to a DC busbar, the sophisticated energy conversion and management system Elfje’s ‘hybrid’ solutions are among the most advanced and reliable of any known sailing yacht afloat. The Class certified systems were tested a year up front to simulate every eventuality before installation. Following studies to enhance sound insulation on previous Royal Huisman projects, very low noise levels were achieved in the accommodations with air-conditioning and gensets running while at anchor. All these

technical achievements have been seamlessly integrated into a design aesthetic that faithfully acknowledges Elfje’s sailing forebears.

Naval Architecture “It doesn’t happen very often that we get the opportunity to have a six-month research project for hull development before we really start to design a yacht,” says naval architect André Hoek. “Uniquely for this project, we developed five different hull lines plans with varying prismatic coefficients and volume distribution, although all were based on the same waterline length and displacement.” These hulls were then calculated upright and under heel using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software to determine the difference in resistance and side force. Based on the results, a 20-foot model of the best hull was subsequently tested at the Marin laboratory in Holland. The final hull form is relatively deep but streamlined with deep V-shaped sections from the bow to the keel to reduce, or even

eliminate, the wave-slamming characteristic of many vertical bows.

Performance Enhancers To increase stability and performance without a real draught limitation, the yacht was equipped with a T-style hydraulic lifting keel with trim tab and a carbon spade rudder. The trim tab in the keel was specifically chosen to increase the efficiency of the keel and, due to the large area of the ketch sail configuration, to balance the helm in power reaches. The keel chord length, the shape of the beaver-tail bulb, the size of the rudder, the position of the masts, and the sail plan, spars and rigging, were also optimised. To reduce weight in the bow and improve downwind speed with the gennaker, asymmetric spinnaker or Code 0, the yacht was fitted with a carbon fibre bowsprit rated for 150 tonnes of compression. The foresail furling systems are housed inside the carbon fibre sprit, thus lowering the sail’s tack and maintaining the classic aesthetics by removing the need for more typical and cumbersome furling units. Elfje’s performance potential is clearly evidenced by the powerful, fully roached sail plan with sails supplied by Doyle Sails NZ and full-carbon rig package by Southern Spars.

driven by the owner’s desire to totally relax on board in a natural, low-key ambience with a hint of tradition. Traditional European walnut was used for the wide flooring boards and fiddle rail detailing, along with a modern finish of light oak that was naturally bleached and weathered then finished with citrus wax. Nickel hardware fixtures and fittings with a warm satin finish accent these timbers while sustainable cork flooring detailed with walnut edging trim for the flooring in the crew quarters was chosen for its comfort underfoot.

Interior Design Described as transitional between traditional and modern, the intention behind the interior design was to challenge the traditional physical and physiological boundaries between guests

and crew to integrate the crew into the life of the yacht with shared activities. The owner’s brief, however, also called for a smooth flow throughout the interior and that each space should function efficiently. To this end, life-sized plywood mock-ups of sections of the interior were assembled by the shipyard with a view to optimising aesthetics and efficiency relating to the use of space, ergonomics and the flow between areas. This was as relevant for the guest areas as for those destined for crew use.

Privately Illuminated In response to the owner’s requirement for privacy, a large ‘duplex apartment’ was created aft and the owner’s deckhouse serves as a day lounge with direct access to a private cockpit. For ease of access, the large bathroom, shower and toilet are situated between the deckhouse

>>

Sustainable Selection With energy-friendliness high on the owner’s agenda, the interior design team of Redman Whiteley Dixon and Pod Interior Style were instructed to pay equal attention to sustainability when it came to selecting the materials for the interior design, which had to draw on renewable resources. The choice of materials was further

and the cabin. An unusual feature in the owner’s suite is the glass-topped ‘oculus’ table with a ship’s wheel design in front of a kidney-shaped day sofa with lee cloth. Designed for viewing marine life even at night when the underwater lights are on, the table covers an opening in the hull that brings bright sunlit reflections into the space when anchored in shallow water with a sandy bottom. Indeed, natural illumination was a priority for the owner and the cabins have generous elliptical port lights, while the master bathroom features a large overhead skylight.

Catering to Company The guest cabins benefit from a subtle curved walling effect that helps to open up the spaces, as there are few right-angle corners for reference points to measure with the eye. Electric sliding doors to the bathrooms eliminate the awkward door swing in a yacht of this size, and each bathroom has an enormous shower stall achieved by positioning the seat outboard over the hull curve and separated by a glass wall. The ‘flex cabin’, the forward starboard cabin, one of four including the aft owner’s suite, is further designed to allow the owner to invite an extra guest, or for a crew on other occasions. “The resulting interior is exquisite in all

www. s u p e r y a c h t - i n d ustr y.c om

Elfje.indd 31

senses, from the craftsmanship and finish to the comfortable yet practical living environment it provides,” says Justin Redman of Redman Whiteley Dixon. “There’s a sense of continuity between all the spaces, both inside and out. Despite their different uses and individual design features, they work together harmoniously.”

Partnering for Perfection Conceptually speaking, Elfje is a project defined by performance in the widest sense. In spite of her classic design references, a modern lightweight Alustar construction coupled with a highly sophisticated systems architecture meant the owner’s objectives in terms of innovation, sustainability and energy efficiency could be met without compromise. Moreover, Elfje is the first superyacht known to have as her primary steering, approved by Lloyd’s, a complete mechanical system free of electric circuitry: physical mechanics at their finest. Working together with Class and Edson Marine, the shipyard developed a practical and sophisticated engineering approach that ensures a balanced feel to the helm providing a system that manages human power to accomplish the controlling of force and movement.

Strong Synergy Together with the owner’s team, including Prior Yacht Management and the Monaco office of Y.CO overseeing contractual and operational matters, the objective was to maintain a strong, clear focus on what had to be accomplished. “The outcome is a truly magnificent sailing yacht that was delivered on time and on budget,” says Jeremy Pochman on behalf of the owner. “This was achieved thanks to the spirit of partnership and teamwork that prevailed. The aim was to create a fine luxury yacht that would deliver across all our criteria, not just for a few years but, in effect, forever. That takes a lot of commitment and I cannot overstate how impressed we have been with the yard’s rigour in developing progressive and reliable solutions for this yacht.”

FOCUS ON GERMANY

BREMEN-BASED SHIPBUILDER CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY

140 Years of Lürssen Shipbuilding FAMILY-RUN LÜRSSEN CAN TODAY LOOK BACK AT OVER 140 YEARS OF SHIPBUILDING HISTORY. WITHIN JUST FOUR GENERATIONS, THE BREMEN-BASED LÜRSSEN FAMILY HAS TURNED A SMALL BOAT BUILDING workshop into a world-class North German shipbuilding company through entrepreneurship, determination and the highest standards of quality. The secret of their success is in their profound trust in their staff, their great drive to innovate and their trademark product quality.

The Lürssen Legacy On 27 June 1875, twenty-four-year-old boat builder Friedrich Lürßen laid the foundation stone for the family-run company. In the early years, the boat builder initially focused on building smaller, more maneuverable boats. In the 1880s, the shipyard became the focus of public attention for the first time when it built the Rems Daimler boat – one of the first three motorboats in the world. A few years later, the company had already become one of

Germany’s leading motorboat manufacturers. Today. Lürssen is among the world’s leading yacht manufacturers with over 1,000 highly qualified staff at its Bremen site and among Europe’s most renowned systems and equipment traders for new naval ship construction. The Lürssen shipyard has manufactured more than 13,000 boats and ships – all at the Bremen shipyards or their North German sister shipyards that are currently included in the Lürssen group.

A Family Affair

“Leading in quality and performance, that should be my company’s reputation,” the words of company founder Friedrich Lürßen expresses the values the company continues to uphold to this day.

Luerssen.indd 32

“The history of the shipyard is still closely linked to our own family history and that of many of our staff”, says fourth generation Friedrich Lürßen, who manages the North Bremen company with his cousin Peter Lürßen. “The family and staff’s genuine identification with the shipyard business and an informal company structure with tight employee loyalty have always been supporting pillars of our success. In addition to technical expertise and practical skills, high levels of flexibility and strength of innovation among our workforce have been the decisive drivers of growth in our shipyard

business as a specialty supplier of hightechnology ship construction since the beginning.”

Prizes and Patrols Under the direction of Friedrich’s son, Otto Lürßen, the shipyard developed into an innovative manufacturer of prize-winning speedboats, including the Lürssen-Daimler – christened in 1911 – a 102 PS petrol-driven boat that won the Côte d’Azur prize and the Grand Prix de Nation. Another sensation of the

NEWS IN BRIEF Project Alida Update: Hull and Superstructure United Heesen Yachts announced in mid September that the hull and superstructure of YN 17755 Project Alida were joined together. Project Alida is a 55-metre fast displacement motoryacht with clean and muscular exterior lines by Omega Architects, while her lavish interiors will be by the award-winning Bannenberg & Rowell studio. The ingenious pencil of Frank Laupman has created an exterior design that emphasises the indoor-outdoor connection thanks to numerous glass insertions in the bulwarks and 180˚ floor to ceiling windows of the 102m2 sky lounge. Vertical windows on the main deck together with an original ‘shark-tooth’ design detail on the overhang of the wheelhouse provide Project Alida with a bold and distinctive character that can already be appreciated at this early stage of her construction.

New Kid on the Block – Brandkuip Develops Functional Design Tender Brandkuip Yachts was founded by three young friends in Amsterdam, with the goal of conquering the world of watercraft. At the HISWA 2015 they presented their BK 880 Trip. With its clean lines, open stern and hybrid propulsion, this multifunctional tender promises to be the highlight of the exhibition. The BK 880 combines luxury, design and functionality. A concept so new that a name had to be made up for it. They call it a multifunctional activity tender. The ship, with its hybrid engine is ideal for cruising quietly on the canals of Amsterdam, but also perfect as a support vessel for water sports like diving, surfing or sailing. Immediately striking about the design of Brandkuip – the open transom. This allows passengerst to feel the contact with the water. This is not just a great feeling, but also very practical. It’s easy entry and exit, beautifully clean and provides an opportunity to draw a small sailing boat on board.

Sea Ray Debuts L-Class In the context of Cannes Yachting Festival 2015, Sea Ray presented the new L-Class series in Amsterdam this September. This new line redefines the idea of luxury, adding image and design to the usual substance and quality of all Sea Ray vessels. An amazing presentation, marked out by multi-sensorial aspects. Sea Ray introduced this range to its customers and regional distributors using all five senses. Touch, through a new catalogue, embellished by a new hard cover with a soft touch; smell through a discrete use of a new signature fragrance – especially made by perfume experts for the L-Class; taste with ‘show cooking’ and tempting tastings from the famous artisan patissier Philippe Brito; hearing, cheered by the notes of Olivier Hoarau’s saxophone, and sight through displaying the lastest yacht models and the new interior design proposals, with an appealing European twist.

Four Luxury Concepts of Preciosa Lighting A producer with hundreds of years of experience, has created the most modern lighting solutions which were showcased at this years MYS. The traditional manufacturer introduced four luxury concepts ranging through various technological demands and levels of innovation. Preciosa Lighting specialises in complete solutions of decorative lighting in private residences as well as distinguished event spaces worldwide and is becoming more and more popular for superyachts and cruise ships. The vice president of Preciosa Lighting, Vojtech ˇ Malina, says, “This year alone we have orders for five ships, and others are on order. In general, it holds true that the more demanding a project is, the more customers seek out Preciosa Lighting. Our projects on yachts and cruise ships are among the most exciting projects which can be found in the realm of interior and decorative lighting. Only a few companies in the world can handle important factors as safety, construction layout, and suitable design with respect to lower-than-usual ceilings, all of which must take into consideration the ship’s vibration, and so on.”

The SuperYacht Pavilion is a destination in its own right. With its own dedicated hall and associated educational and social networking programme, the SYP is far more than an exhibition – it’s a superyacht experience.

Superyacht Sink or Swim. The format, based on 2014’s popular Innov*8 session, will see industry individuals, manufacturers, suppliers and studios pitch their ideas to a panel of influential figures from the superyacht market: the ‘superyacht sharks’.The entrepreneurs will have a strict time constraint to outline their product, how they feel it is innovative and what it provides to the industry. The sharks will then deliver advice, criticism, compliments and questions in front of the GSF audience. This is a unique opportunity to pitch a product or service to a captive panel of decision-makers and present the latest industry ideas to nearly 600 super yacht professionals.

Day by Day Monday 16 November: The Investors As the industry still recovers from the Global Financial Crisis, day one will look to discuss the most effective strategies to improve the industry. A host of experts, from within the super yacht market and further, will share their thoughts and development plans, providing an authoritative glimpse into what new investments mean for the industry. Tuesday 17 November: The Innovators Day two will focus on the innovators and will explore emerging and groundbreaking technology, concepts and products. Trailblazing keynote speakers will take to the stage to present technical developments and address how these advancements may impact the super yacht world over the next decade. Wednesday 18 November: The Inspiratiors Last but not least, day three will focus on the inspirations. Inspirational figureheads, thought provoking debates, blue sky thinking and more, the closing day of GSF intends to motivate the audience to question age-old traditions, think organically and develop fresh ideas. Listen to leaders in their field discuss how they faced, and overcame, challenges to take risks and pursue their most ambitious projects.

Let the MetamorphosA begin Imagine being able to almost instantly transform a full flush deck into an enclosed area for comfortable relaxation. This was the vision behind Alukwa and Amber Dynamic Sun Design’s development of a completely new sundeck concept for the next generation of superyacht. When the weather is good, the full deck is available for relaxation with MetamorphosA equipment stored out of sight in a compact box below deck level. As the weather suddenly changes or night falls, the metamorphosis of the MetamorphosA takes place by simply tapping on an app on a mobile device. Seemingly out of nowhere a complete structure made of an Amber Dynamic Sun Design weatherproof roof surrounded by Alukwa windscreen panels, is raised from the deck creating a fully protected area.

MetamorphosA is space efficient with only a small recess in the Sundeck floors and two boxes of approximately 1 x 1 metre on the deck level below the Sundeck sufficient to store the entire unit, creating a protected area of maximum 50 m². Once stored, all equipment disappears in the deck, resulting in a completely level deck. When the command ‘let the MetamorphosA take place’ is given, the two store boxes with glass panels and the storage for the canvas roof, rise out of the deck. The options for (partial) closure are various; the roof can be closed or partially closed, while the glass windbreak panels are open. The glass windbreak panels can be partially closed independent from the roof. Ultimately, the entire area can be closed, creating a large space, which can be used day or night, rain or shine. Alukwa and Amber Dynamic Sun Design are proud to announce this concept being unveiled at this years METS.

New Developments at Yachtlite 2015 saw the creative light enthusiasts at Yachtlite develop and implement 3D furniture lighting, i.e. light adapted to individual furniture forms. The illuminating lines follow the contours of furniture in all directions. With this new technology, many benefits join forces: design, 3D laser measurement,

3D design, production of elements in 2D, mould construction, thermoforming, surface coating and, of course, perfectly homogeneous illumination. Additionally, specialty lighting solutions for helidecks are in development. Multiple helidecks are already in development in Europe with more being planned based on Yachtlite’s proven LED technology. At the METS 2015, samples from already implemented 3D solutions will be on display. Moreover, there will be preview samples of new projects. One highlight: a joint exhibit from all members of the newly founded Group2O focussing on ‘Pool Projects on Yachts’.

MOBILE, MEDIA & MORE

New Enhanced Apps for Light Measurement In 2014, mobile, media & more showcased the Lighting Passport – the latest generation of spectrometers – at METS. In time for this year’s METS, the LED experts are presenting new, sophisticated and enhanced applications of this product. The name of the new app is ‘Spectrum Genius Studio’ (SGS) and allows the Lighting Passport to transfer the TLCI measurement data directly to the iPad with a high degree of clarity, enabling the information to be visualized and evaluated in a results-oriented manner. The measurement data is then stored for subsequent comparisons or to be emailed to customers, colleagues or service providers via a Bluetooth connection. According to Britta Vorfelder, CEO of mobile, media & more, the high-precision measuring system will lead LED manufacturers to improve the color fidelity and color space of their lamps/luminaires in the medium or even short term – which in turn will have a considerable impact on the superyacht sector. She has been following the rapid developments in light measurement technology for many years and as a result has been working proactively on improving the quality of the LED luminaires marketed by her company. Ms Vorfelder explains: “The more accurately we can measure light, the more precisely lighting planners or designers can define the targets for color fidelity, color space or color temperature. This

mobile, media & more are presenting LED products which comply with TLCI requirements and the Lighting Passport, which has been exclusively marketed within the marine industry since 2014, in collaboration with producer Asensetek. The industry’s response to the handheld spectrometer has been very positive so far. “Regular updates and new developments ensure that the device is a must-have product for everyone who works professionally with light. The fact that it weighs just under 60 grams, fits into one’s trouser pocket and can be used everywhere for the mobile measurement of light underscores its suitability for use in yacht construction.” The Lighting Passport is iPhone, iPAD (iOS) and Android (4.4.2) compatible.
