Spring Break

DENNIS VINKOERT | PUBLISHER & EXECUTIVE EDITOR DENNIS@YNFPUBLISHERS.COM

THE TERM ‘SPRING BREAK’ REFERS TO A MONUMENTAL RITE OF PASSAGE FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS AND YOUNG ADULTS ALL OVER THE WORLD. IT IS SYNONYMOUS WITH THE WILDEST PARTIES AND THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BEACHES. Hold your horses, I’m only talking about a short spring break in the Mediterranean. After all, that’s always a good idea and when the destination is Palma de Mallorca, it can even be magical. The month of May heralds the beginning of the yachting season in the area and the Palma Superyacht Show, with its optimum timing, is the perfect opening act. The island of Palma itself has a strong yachting personality and this makes it the ideal setting for a brokerage and charter show of excellence. It is the centre for brokerage sales of large sailing yachts in the Mediterranean and one of the most dynamic refit destinations in Europe. The weather is favourable, the atmosphere is relaxed and as far as chartering is concerned, Spain is now fully open to foreignflagged yachts. It is a win-win combination that is reflected in the Palma Superyacht Show. The Palma Superyacht Show is unique by way of its 50:50 motor to sail ratio and is one of the few shows run by the industry for the industry. It provides a platform for brokerage and charter yachts above 24m and is conducted in partnership with the Worldwide Yachting Association (MYBA). The event has flourished since its debut two years ago and the indications are that this year’s show will be the best to date with close to 70 yachts on display and 50 exhibitors. Remaining berths and stands are few and in high demand so, time is indeed of the essence. Last year we visited the charter show for the very first time and we were quite surprised by the approximately 36,000 people who visited the event. Mind you, this number is expected to increase significantly this year. The Palma Superyacht Show is more than a destination. It is an experience not to be missed. With Spanish and Balearic maritime authorities behind the continued growth and future prosperity of this show, expect to see an even larger and more successful event this year.

NEWS IN BRIEF SYI FEATURE

Sealed with a kiss Feadship launched the 46.4m motoryacht Kiss on Saturday 14 February in a ceremony that made the most of the Valentine’s Day spirit. Having recently unveiled two of the largest superyachts in the global fleet – the 101.5m Feadship and 83.5m Savannah – this launch proves how Feadship can also embrace its roots size-wise within the highest standards of 21st century custom yachtbuilding. Kiss also showcases Feadship’s ability to optimise the efficiency of the engineering processes involved in creating a bespoke superyacht. The story behind Kiss is linked in a number of ways to the 46.22m Feadship Como, which was launched last year. Como stole the show in Monaco, proving beyond doubt that biggest isn’t always best. The validity of this statement has been

proven by the unprecendented number of awards won by Como. Feadship director Henk de Vries is convinced that Kiss will follow in her path. The complete owner’s deck – an unusual feature for a yacht under 50m – makes the most of both the volume and interior space. An aluminium-plated sun roof opens up to add to the light interior vibe. More al fresco-like pleasures include a sun deck with Jacuzzi and a transom swim platform with swim ladder and underwater platform. Kiss also features superior accommodation for eight guests in four suites as well as four crew cabins, a staff room and a captain’s cabin positioned near the raised pilothouse.

Marine Development Middle East As the marine industry moves into another phase of growth in the Middle East, Wayne Shepherd, General Manager of the Dubai-based Mourjan Marinas, has called on owners to take a ‘pragmatic and phased approach’ to marina development. “In recent years, we’ve observed an increased interest in waterfront developments across the Middle East, which is encouraging for the continuing growth of the marine industry as a whole,” said Shepherd. Shepherd highlights the importance for developers to involve the services of a marina management company from the outset.

NEWS IN BRIEF Case Study on DP Dynamic Positioning (DP) systems are a mature and well-proven technology. The superyacht industry has embraced DP as a concept and many large yachts now feature some level of station-keeping capability. However, as DP is not widely understood beyond the basic principles, capabilities are frequently over specified and the resulting impact on the level of installed power is often severe or at odds with the propulsion system specified for the yacht. A case study is now used to explore a range of power generation and propulsion systems, each with specific attention to the impacts on the primary design variables for large yachts. The researchers, Mr Calver and Mr Roy, go on to explore suggested levels of station-keeping /DP capability suitable for application to large yachts allowing a better informed system specification to be made.

NEWS IN BRIEF Tender Baby

Dyneema Rigging

Cantiere Navale Italia makes its debut in the international nautical market with a craft that will most certainly be noteworthy. The internationally famous yacht designer Luca Dini is the author of this new project, where the hull is the primary focus of the design. Hull shape is an active part of the boat’s styling: not only does it provide stability and shape, but it represents the spirit of the whole yacht. The tender was created using the concepts associated with superyacht alloy construction, and concentrating in her size all the characteristics usually found in a larger yacht. “A fighter plane without wings” is how her designer Luca Dini defined her. “A sporty boat that has perfect proportions, that really looks like a fighter, powerful and efficient thanks to state-of-the-art technology.”

The Barcelona World Race kicked off on 31 December 2014 and finished at the end of March. The race covered approximately 26,000 nautical miles. Gleistein Ropes is the official rope supplier to the Neutrogena sailing team. With around 3,000m of running rigging supplied, Gleistein equipped the Neutrogena entry with the highest quality, durable lines with Dyneema. The sponsorship agreement between the Neutrogena sailing team and Gleistein Ropes, which was originally announced in 2014, brings together leaders in their respective fields. Rigging with the highest performance levels and extreme reliability was required to meet the extreme demands of the Barcelona World Race – in which the yacht and crew are exposed to the harshest of conditions including gale force winds and giant waves in the Southern Ocean. The Barcelona World Race turns out to be the ultimate test of reliability in an epic race of survival.

Flagship for Riviera Iconic Australian yacht builder Riviera has announced a majestic new flagship for its impressive fleet of premium recreational yachts – one that signifies a progressive step forward for the luxury marque with a legendary passion for perfection. The new and deluxe 77 Enclosed Flybridge – the largest, most luxurious and most technologically advanced Riviera ever – is the result of a long and successful commitment to constant refinement and continual evolution, which has positioned Riviera amongst the leaders of its field. The 77 Enclosed Flybridge is a serious long-range offshore vessel offering the perfect mix of cruising and fishing capabilities with ultra-modern marine technology, plush and palatial appointments and, indeed, boasts all the comforts of a world-class luxury resort. The first model in the 77 series was launched at the Dubai International Boat Show 2015.

NEWS IN BRIEF Full Displacement Yacht by Heesen Heesen recently delivered Asya to her owners. She is the second in the restyled 47m class, a breed of yachts whose exterior design by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects combines traditional lines with contemporary flair, a marriage emphasised by the continuous glass windows and matching black paintwork on the main deck and upper decks. An important design change concerns the crew accommodation, which complies with LY3 regulations. Powered by two MTU8V 4000 M63 diesel engines, Asya’s well-engineered steel hull with bulbous bow provided smooth passage and exceeded the contractual speed by 0.8 knots. At her cruising speed (12 knots) she has a range of 4,000 nautical miles.

Spanish Yachting Legislation Works Well

Power Trimaran Sunreef shipyard has responded to the growing interest for technically advanced and progressively designed yachts with a new 46m long trimaran concept – the 150 Sunreef Power Trimaran, a smaller and more intimate version of the superstar unit 210 Sunreef Power Trimaran. The magnificent 150 Sunreef Power Trimaran, thanks to its three hulls, offers the maximum of comfort, stability and bright spacious interiors equalling 370m² on two decks, including two exclusive open terraces and an ample cockpit.
The elegant 45m² master suite is located in the bow section of the yacht and includes an en-suite his and hers bathroom, an intimate lounge and the exit to a private 18m² dream terrace with breathtaking views.

It’s now well over a year since all charter yachts operating in Spain, irrespective of size, could claim exemption from the infamous matriculation tax, and several months since non-EU-flagged superyachts were allowed to charter within Balearic waters – ample time to see if the new legislation works. Palma-based Network Marine Consultants says that it does. From a base of zero in 2013, the consultants administered no less than 33 superyacht charter licences in 2014. Taking renewals out of the equation, these brand new licences were for 25 motor yachts, four sailing yachts and four catamarans, up to a substantial 52m length overall. Official figures from Spanish marine trade association, ANEN, back this sentiment. In its 2014 review, it stated that Spain’s recreational yachting market grew almost 10 percent after six years of decline.

Grand Opening Azimut Yachts Thailand recently celebrated the opening of Azimut Yachts in Thailand, consisting of a gala on the coast of Pattaya with the participation of local authorities. It was followed by the official signing ceremony of the partnership agreement with MGC Marine at the presence of the Italian Ambassador. As part of the Azimut Yachts growth strategy, the Italian brand belonging to the Azimut|Benetti Group continues to expand its presence in foreign markets through a focussed strategy of partnership with new dealers. MGC Marine is part of the Master Group Corporation (Asia), major dealer in the automotive retail business, including such luxury brands as Rolls-Royce and Aston Martin.

WISP

TIMELESS GENTLEMAN’S RACER

FROM HER RAKED BOW AND ELEGANT SHEER LINE TO HER CUTTER RIG AND EFFICIENT SAIL HANDLING SYSTEMS, THE 48M ROYAL HUISMAN CLASSIC SLOOP WISP IS A FINE EXAMPLE OF REVIVAL NAVAL ARCHITECTURE BY NETHERLANDS-BASED HOEK DESIGN. The owner’s brief was for a boat that would perform well without excessive heel, hence her sea-kindly and powerful hull form with spoon bow to comfortably reel off countless ocean miles. With a magnificent stained oak and wenge interior by Rhoades Young that takes full advantage of all available space, the yacht fulfils all her owner’s criteria for a comfortable cruising yacht that may also indulge in a little ‘gentleman’s racing.

Revivalist Naval Architecture

At the moment of finalising this article the news reached the editorial office that Wisp has become the winner of two highly coveted Golden Neptune awards at the 2015 ShowBoats Design Awards, presented at the prestigious Superyacht Design Symposium in Kitzbühel, Austria: An Interior Design Award and an Exterior Design Award both in the category Sailing Yacht 40m and Above. www. s u p e r y a c h t - i n d ustr y.c om

Wisp.indd 11

Commissioned in the Spring of 2014, the 48m (156ft) Hoek/Rhoades Young designed classic sloop built by Royal Huisman left Holland for her maiden voyage to the fjords of Norway before entering the Western Mediterranean for the remaining summer. Wisp’s performance belies her traditional lines and she is a magnificent example of revivalist naval architecture from the drawing board of Hoek Design with interior architecture by Rhoades Young Design. Fulfilling the brief as a supremely comfortable cruising yacht more than capable of providing the pleasures of some ‘gentleman’s racing’ on occasion, she presented an exciting challenge for the designers and shipyard alike. The client, whilst satisfied to cruise at a leisurely pace, was looking for a decent turn of speed without sailing on the edge. Moreover, as he plans to make long passages, he expected the same high level of comfort – both inside and on deck – he had enjoyed on various yachts. With meticulous attention to detail, he was involved in every aspect of the design and construction of what has become his ‘home away from home’. In terms of hull design, the Hoek Design team has revitalised the style and grace of the classic sailing yachts of yesteryear, whilst paying homage to the needs of today’s modern lifestyle on board. Features developed by the team, such as the owner’s aft cockpit, provide

a degree of privacy and amenity. Although not typical of the original design period, they help to marry echoes from the past with a thoroughly modern list of creature comforts for today’s expectant guest. The talented Dutch firm of naval architects was tasked with developing a yacht that would sail very well without excessive heel; hence Wisp’s added form stability, Alustar aluminium hull and spoon bow for a gentler ride.

Cutter Rig Her cutter rig, moderate draught underbody, carbon composite spars from Rondal, EC6 and Carbo-Link hybrid rigging and efficient sail handling systems are all enhanced for performance, seaworthiness and ease of handling. The cutter-rig sailplan was designed

for balance and simple handling while cruising and the possibility of using overlapping genoas for racing, with much thought going into the track positioning and winch sizes to handle the increased loads and speeds during regattas. A close collaboration between the Hoek Design office and Rhoades Young Design ensured consistency between the exterior and interior styling details, which were made a reality by Royal Huisman. The deck design reveals a clean and contemporary layout that still respects the classic styling of the striking sheer, spoon bow, traditional counter stern and teak cladlow-profile deckhouses. The result is an uncluttered expanse of teak decking fore and aft with few obstacles to disturb the sense of harmony. Indeed,

throughout the yacht the exterior woodwork has been rationalised by examining and simplifying every joint and detail to create calming guest areas with plenty of hidden storage and an efficient navigation cockpit. Instead of the more typical stranded wire, solid stainless steel lifelines linking the deck-mounted stanchions provide non-sailors an added sense of security and add an elegant, polished look. Wisp features traditional waterfall margins between the teak decking and the superstructures – a detail requiring much thicker pieces of carefully selected timber to provide a consistent grain and perfect fit and finish. The custom helm stations and steering wheels represent works of art in their own right. Various options were considered, from traditional allwood to modern wheels in carbon fibre. In the end, a graceful design was chosen with 20 polished stainless steel spokes, rimmed with a delicate bead detail, which radiate from a central hub, itself clad with teak that has been lovingly milled and fitted by hand. In addition, the detailing of daylight readable control panels and surrounding seating areas were designed to optimise space and present a visual impression of low volume.

Timeless Simplicity Further deck space has been freed up by placing the Rondal winches for the main

halyard, mainsheet and preventer below deck in a separate compartment adjoining the engine room, which can still be quickly accessed from the forward engine room entrance and monitored via CCTV cameras. To ensure the 6.2m (20ft) owner’s tender blends in with the sweeping sheer of the hull, it is partially recessed into a pocket on the foredeck. Another notable deck feature is the crew cockpit just forward of the main mast. With a convertible car-style retractable dodger, protective coamings, storage and direct access below deck to the dinette, it provides a secure assembly point within easy reach of the deck equipment while under sail and a relaxing social area when at anchor. Despite the timeless simplicity of the deck design and superstructures, trademark Royal Huisman detailing abounds, such as the louvred ventilation grilles made of veneer-clad carbon fibre on the sides of the deckhouses. First introduced on Meteor in 2007, the advantage of carbon over aluminium is that it allows for thinner profiles to optimise the airflow around and through the louvres when given a fixed perimeter dimension. These smaller grilles can be elegantly sized to harmonise with the softly arched deckhouse windows. The hull shape provided ample room for Rhoades Young Design, renowned for their sophisticated yet understated yacht interiors,

Classic Grace The brief was for a light, airy and calming ambience in which to travel the world – a style the owner summed up in the word ‘jolly’ – and this kick-started the process for Rhoades Young to define an interior design that reflected the classic grace of Wisp’s exterior. To achieve a relaxed, home-away-from-home feel, the designers selected as the principle material a light oak that has been stained a soft, honey amber to perfectly match the owner’s personal tastes. Care was taken to ensure a quiet and continuous flow in the wood’s natural grain so as to ensure a visually pleasing calmness to the interior. In the same manner, the overheads – typically either panelled or clad in leather – have been reinterpreted as simple, unembellished frames with relaxed, linen inserts. This neutral background is contrasted with dark wenge inlays and fabrics of the highest quality in courageous colours that range from Photo courtesy of Cory Silken

fresh, leafy greens to rich, duck egg blues and burnt oranges, punctuated with brightly coloured table lamps that have been converted from Murano glass vases. Beautiful handmade carpeting provides the casual charm of Japanese Tatami matting with a softness that only pure wool can achieve. “From an architectural point of view, we created an unusual open-plan interior layout that is designed in layers to reveal itself gradually,” says Jonathan Rhoades. “Below deck you are led from space to space and at each destination the rooms feel resolved and complete. It is only on exploring further that you realise they open onto other spaces, until finally all the layers are peeled back to reveal salons and cabins with huge sightlines through the various deck levels linking the interior and exterior.”

Shõji screens The owner’s suite is a perfect example of this layering effect. The full-beam cabin has various Japanese Shõji screens to bring a gentle, suffused light into the room. Sliding aside the double doors on the portside reveals

a generous bathroom with basins and bath of light green Costa Smeralda marble. The space develops further when the curved aft doors are slid into their pockets to reveal a charming rotunda with a domed ceiling that leads to the owner’s library on the portside and walk-in wardrobe to starboard. Flowing aft, a sweeping staircase raises the eye to the owner’s aft deckhouse that connects to the private cockpit, which is trimmed with two fixed captain’s chairs integrated into the teak surrounds of the seating. As a whole, the owner’s suite is a fantastically light and airy retreat that maintains the flexibility of distinct areas for working, relaxing and sleeping.

Fine-Tune Aspects Hoek Design also worked closely with Rhoades Young Design and Royal Huisman to fine-tune aspects of the exterior styling. They collaborated, for example, on workshop models of the ‘styled to order’ boom to produce one of the most elegant and lightest looking in-boom furling spars on any sailing superyacht. Together with the shipyard, they also

developed customised up lighting for the deckhouses, rig and bulwarks to create a gentle halo that highlights the outline of the yacht at anchor, as well the fine marquetry to the boom crutch and cockpit tables. Collaboration and attention to detail has been key to the success of Wisp and it is clear that the more one looks the more one will see. Aware that a happy crew makes for a happy boat, therefore, the owner was equally anxious that the crew accommodation and workspaces be both comfortable and user-friendly. So the well-appointed crew cabins all have large portholes, whilst the dual purpose forward cabin appointed for the captain’s use is finished to the same high quality as the guest areas and could easily serve as an additional guest cabin. It offers the added convenience of discretely placed instruments to monitor wind, depth and heading.

Engine Control Room The engine and control room are not typical for a sailing yacht of this length as the owner requested a full-height engine room with

maximised access to machinery. A separate sound-proofed and air-conditioned control room provides a comfortable and efficient working environment for the chief engineer. It also locates the electronics in a dedicated and properly ventilated space away from the guest areas and the disguised navigation station in the deckhouse, which is used primarily for route planning. The engine room is every yacht’s beating heart. Here Royal Huisman has turned surgical precision into an art form by designing and engineering the space to the highest standards – and if this cannot be seen by the casual observer, it certainly cannot be heard thanks to Huisman’s famed attention to suppressing noise and vibration. Equipment such as the Hamann black water treatment system that uses micro flotation with ultraviolet light disinfection is now standard on Royal Huisman yachts, but on special request from the owner’s team the Heinen & Hopman Air-Conditioning unit is more powerful than in conventional specifications. Special focus was given to the environmental impact of the vessel by installing exhaust gas scrubbers and soot burners to ensure clean air emissions.

Summary A commitment to the owner’s pure and simple aesthetic by the designers, combined with Royal Huisman’s signature attention to quality construction and seaworthiness, has resulted in a fine gentleman’s sailing yacht with ocean-going capability, comfort and performance. “It has been an absolute pleasure to be part of the Huisman family, and a dynamic and focussed project team,” wrote the owner’s representative, following delivery of the yacht. “Together the builders and designers have exceeded the expectations of the client with exceptional standards and they’re duly proud of the beautiful vessel.

short spring break in the Mediterranean is always a good idea and, when the destination is Palma de Mallorca, it can be magical. The weather is favourable, the atmosphere is relaxed and as far as chartering is concerned, Spain is now fully open to foreign-flagged yachts. It is a winning combination that is reflected in the Palma Superyacht Show. The Palma Superyacht Show is unique by way of its 50:50 motor to sail ratio. The Palma Superyacht Show is organised by the Balearic Yacht Brokers Association (BYBA), which is made up of six international brokers all with offices in Palma. This ensures that the show maintains a sensible price structure making it a truly industry based event. The show provides a platform for brokerage and charter yachts above 24m and is conducted in partnership with

TRADE SHOW Palma Supyacht Show is one of the few yacht shows that is organised and managed by the industry itself.

MYBA, the Worldwide Yachting Association. The event has flourished since its debut in 2013 and the indications are that this year’s show will be the best to date with close to 70 yachts on display and 50 exhibitors. Remaining berths and stands are few and in high demand so, time is indeed of the essence. Approximately 36,000 people visited the show last year and this number is expected to increase significantly. Visitors to the 2015 show will have the opportunity to view a fine array of yachts including the magnificent Mondango 2, a 51.8m sailing yacht built by Alloy Yachts, and there is also an eating & drinking lounge on the drawing board that will make you see ‘stars’. The Palma Superyacht Show is more than a destination. It is an experience not to be missed. The show has become an important event in the yachting calendar. Perfectly timed before the summer season and taking in the May public holiday means that international visitors can enjoy a long weekend in sunny Palma, Majorca as well as see a stunning selection of yachts. Running concurrently with Boat Show Palma in the heart of the city, the show attracted over 36,000 visitors in 2014 and over 56 luxury vessels were available for sale or charter. 50 percent of these were sailing yachts making it a perfect balance to suit all clients’ preferences.

Clear Identity Jane Thompson, Coordinator of the Palma Superyacht Show, says, “Avoiding comparisons with Cannes or Monaco, the Palma Superyacht Show has established its own clear identity as a brokerage and charter show of excellence, perfectly timed before the summer season. Designed to coincide with 1 May, a public holiday in most European countries, as well as the UK’s Monday ‘May Day’, we hope visitors will take a long weekend break in hospitable Palma, enjoy the sunshine and see a great selection of top quality yachts.” The outlook is certainly good for the show, the 2015 event is once more growing in size to cater to demand. In 2014 a total of 34 service and equipment-related companies occupied shoreside exhibition stands, for the third edition this will rise to 50. There are also plans to up the number of superyacht berths. “We are working hard to get more berthing space for the 2015 edition of the Palma Superyacht Show,” says Arne Ploch, Coordinator of the in-water display of the show, and Sales Broker for Camper & Nicholsons. “There were 55 attending yachts in 2014 and we are going to try and fit in ten more. With the Palma Superyacht Show now established as one of the most important brokerage and charter events before the summer, demand is

high. We were sold out in 2014 and expect the same again for 2015, but this time much earlier. With five berth reservations already signed from those who didn’t attend the previous year, we can’t impress on potential exhibitors enough to book as soon as possible – particularly for charter as Spain is now fully open to foreignflagged yachts and the market is burgeoning.”

Testimonials Several exhibitors have realised the sense of urgency and already reserved space for 2015. Shipyard Astilleros de Mallorca and refinishing and chandlery business, Nautipaints, are among the early movers. Jenny Maul from Astilleros de Mallorca, said, “The previous Palma Superyacht Show was a great success for Astilleros de Mallorca and we had a large stand. The relaxed and positive atmosphere provided a great platform for communicating and sharing information with many other companies, while our long-term customers were impressed by the show’s fresh image and the presence of the best yachts available in the market for sale or charter. The show has obvious potential to flourish and establish itself in the coming years as one of the top events in the superyacht industry. We’re looking forward to the next edition.” Toni Salom, CEO of Nautipaints, exhibiting for

The Event Programme the third successive year, said, “Palma is one of the most dynamic and competitive yachting refit destinations in Europe, and the Boat Show is a great opportunity to meet other companies involved in the nautical industry, so it’s only right that a well-organised superyacht show should also be based here. We’re proud to be part of it.”

Perfect Platform Following five extremely positive and successful days, the 2nd Palma Superyacht Show took place amidst the congenial and pleasant surroundings of Palma’s Old Port area and concluded on Sunday 4 May, 2014. Local and international visitors were treated to a line-up of 56 glorious superyachts as well as service & equipment related companies onshore. Approximately 50:50 sail to power ratio meant the show could lay claim to being ‘one of the largest sailing superyacht shows in the world’. High visitor attendance proved conclusively that the ease of accessibility, friendliness and laidback nature of this lovely yachting region hit the spot with many. The organiser’s strategy to coincide the show with public holidays and for it to take place at the same time as the prestigious Gaastra Palma Vela Regatta, clearly worked well. Combining these facts, the number of existing and potential superyacht owners and charterers known to have visited the show at various times was reported by brokers and exhibitors to have been high. Justifying participation, Steve Worral, from onboard electrical installers and service agents, OC3EAN and ETY said: “The Palma Superyacht show attracted quality visitors, many yacht owners and senior crew and we are very pleased with the contacts we have made.” With three significant yachts in the Show, Burgess/Oceanstyle, Senior Broker, Jamie Small, said: “We have received an offer on each of the yachts we had at the show.” Other MYBA brokers were equally enthusiastic:

Marc Händle, Sales Broker from Ocean Independence said: “We had high quality clients on board SY Mystere and, in fact, on board all of our other yachts during the show and we will definitely continue showing high quality sailing yachts here in the future.” Marc added: “In my opinion the Palma Superyacht Show has already developed in to the perfect platform for owners and brokers to present vessels in a beautiful atmosphere and at the perfect time of year.”

Show Benefits Fraser Yachts Sales Broker, Giulio Riggio, confirmed: “An excellent and positive show once again!” and Thorsten Giesbert, also from Fraser’s sales office said: “I received two very reasonable offers from qualified northern European clients on two of my yachts at the show!” Busy immediately after the show had ended, Jochen Brill, Senior Broker with Dahm International said: “I went out for two sea trials with three different clients onboard Jongert 2900M Scorpione dei Mari and M/Y Alexander K.” Joost Goverts, Broker/Director at Northrop & Johnson said: “The show was very positive with a good number of clients with some returning up to four times to inspect the same boat. One offer has been made already and we are now working in expectation of a further two serious offers.” But it was not only sales brokers who benefitted. Plentiful enquiries were made for luxury charter, confirmed by Ocean Independence Charter Broker, Barbara Müller who said: “It was a very successful show and you could see the improvement from last year. We got many interested charter clients on our three charter yachts present.”

Upsurge Natascha Weber, Charter Director at Northrop & Johnson Spain said: “I am thrilled to convey that we received no less than 10 promising charter

enquiries from qualified new clients, including six for charters in the Balearics and the rest for charters abroad. All we need now is a final and crystal clear ruling about the exemption of the Spanish matriculation tax on foreign flagged vessels that want to charter here and BYBA/ MYBA brokers here will be rolling!” During the show, similarities were drawn between Palma’s growing reputation as a worldclass sailing destination, and that of Sardinia whose Marina Portus Karalis were exhibiting with even greater ambitions for next year. Zdenko Radman, Operations Director, said: “Next year we will have an even larger stand, enabling us to promote the five different marinas within our network and the Island of Sardinia as a whole.” The show benefitted from an upsurge in interest following last year’s announcement by the Spanish authorities of the exemption from yachts of 15m and above, from the 12 percent matriculation tax. Summarising the net effect, Palma based Nick Stael von Holstein, Medical Support Offshore said: “I’ve had the best sales of any Yacht Show I’ve attended in the last 10 years!” Likewise Kety Sierra, STP Shipyard Palma confirmed: “The Palma Superyacht Show has grown in just two years and is now a top quality event that attracts many professional visitors.” With Spanish and Balearic maritime authorities behind the continued growth and future prosperity of this show, we expect to see an even larger and more successful event in 2015.

Pioneering Technology

At the heart of Ethereal’s energy efficiency and operational versatility is a pioneering energy generation, storage and management system.

Let’s start with the very first hybrid superyacht launched in the Netherlands: The 58m sailing superyacht Ethereal. Some six years has passed since Royal Huisman launched the Ron Holland/ Pieter Beeldsnijder-designed ketch-rigged yacht. Ethereal is notable for her pioneering hybrid propulsion system and incorporating 500kW/h of stored energy in her Li-on battery bank. Up to now, Ethereal has logged over 1,000 miles traversing the world’s oceans propelled either by sail, or by mechanical propulsion, or via her stored energy source. Furthermore, her entire domestic load – in addition to sailing systems and anchoring functions – can source its power from this same set of Li-on batteries, enabling true stealth mode operation. Considering the vessel’s exhilarating performance, sumptuous amenity and exceptional energy efficiency, the vessel is much more than just another ‘floating paradise’. The Ethereal project combined a small number of significant advances with numerous minor gains which, taken together, have had a significant impact on her operational efficiency in terms of energy demands, fuel economy, operational sustainability and carbon footprint. At the heart of Ethereal’s energy efficiency and operational versatility is a pioneering energy generation, storage and management system. Its key elements are an innovative hybrid drive train, a Li-ion phosphate battery bank and ‘smart’ operating procedures. Unlike a conventional diesel-electric system, Ethereal’s drive train does not use electric motors as the principal means of turning the drive shaft. Instead, the relatively conventional shaft drives of the two main engines incorporate ring motors that can perform either as generators to recharge the battery bank, or as electric motors to turn the propeller shafts using electric power from the generators or batteries. Ethereal carries an ample number of features and innovations. To name but a few, Ethereal incorporates redundant propulsion lines: only one engine is required when cruising. There is also a high degree of redundancy in the generator capacity. The yacht is fitted with large controllable pitch propellers for improved efficiency. The two main engines,

unconventionally, are housed within purposebuilt sound shields to further reduce noise in the engine room and accommodation sections.

NextGEN Pilot Ketch Elfje Setting aside Ethereal’s six-year lead, eight months have also passed since Royal Husiman launched the 46m Andre Hoek-designed NextGEN ketch Elje, incorporating the latest iteration of the hybrid technology that informed the Etherel project. Whereas Ethereal’s groundbreaking hybrid system focuses on propulsion and power management, Elfje interprets ‘hybrid’ by supplying power via variable fuel-consuming generators backed up by a Li-on ‘peak-shaving’ power storage bank and energy management system. An important goal in the vessel’s design was to minimise her environmental impact, according to her owners. “Translating that into the technologies employed, we were looking for effective gains that would work 100 percent, but we did not want to push the boundaries so far that reliability would be compromised. To that end, the systems architecture developed by Royal Huisman’s R&D team in conjunction with Whisper Power was vital.” Conceptually speaking, this is a project defined by performance in the widest sense. In spite of her classic design references, Elfje has been dubbed a ‘NextGEN’ yacht to highlight her owner’s wish to maximise innovation, sustainability and energy efficiency. The heart of the systems architecture combines a flywheel generator, lightweight and low-noise variable speed generators, fast and flexible hydraulic and electrical power delivery systems, and ‘artificial intelligence’ power storage, conversion and management systems. This provided major efficiencies and excellent redundancy, while significantly reducing fuel consumption – ongoing topics of research and development at Royal Huisman. “We were able, for example, to save over 2,000kg compared with traditional gensets. These systems were tested up front to simulate every eventuality before being Class-certified prior to installation. Thanks to our R&D on previous projects, we were also able to achieve very low noise levels (eg. 36 dB(A) in the dining

All these technical achievements have been seamlessly integrated into a design aesthetic that faithfully acknowledges Elfje’s sailing forebears,” a spokesman of the yard said. Her advanced systems architecture, developed in conjunction with Whisper Power, combines a flywheel generator, lightweight and low-noise variable speed generators, fast and flexible hydraulic and electrical power delivery systems, and intelligent power management. The energy storage system, for example, is connected to a DC busbar and designed to absorb peak loads. The systems architecture was thoroughly simulated and tested, then Class-certified prior to installation and had been seamlessly integrated into a design aesthetic that faithfully

acknowledges Elfje’s sailing forebears. Last but not least: Elfje is the first superyacht to have manual steering approved by Lloyd’s which gives a true and balanced feel to the helm. It has the further advantage of simplifying systems tremendously.

Savannah On 26 January 2015, Feadship announced the launching of the 83.5m Savannah, proudly presenting her as the world’s first hybrid superyacht, thereby overlooking the fact that the Ethereal was definitely the first seven years ago. Svannah features an eco-friendly blend of single diesel engine, three gensets, batteries, propeller, azimuthing thruster and a streamlined hull shape. Offering fuel economies of thirty percent, the pioneering electro-mechanical propulsion

platform couples Feadship’s past experience and forward thinking approach to a pure custom creation. Further design innovation comes in terms of a floating superstructure, an underwater lounge, the ‘open’ aft deck areas, and much more besides. Inspired by the 2010 Feadship Future Concept Breathe, Savannah is another demonstration of the cost-effective and cleaner mode of propulsion that can be achieved within an entirely bespoke superyacht. Savannah has a dynamic hull shape with a very fine entry, uses one efficient medium-speed Wärtsilä main engine instead of two high-rev diesel engines, a single central propeller shaft installation on the centreline and three gensets. Redundancy is ensured by fitting a large contrarotating and azimuthing sternthruster just aft of the main propeller. The design of the aft ship allows for a propeller that is forty percent larger than the standard. Combined with the power supplied by the thruster, the load on the propeller is only half that of a conventional twin screw yacht. This again results in a higher efficiency and fewer vibrations. In addition, the large sternthruster also enhances excellent manoeuvrability in marinas. Taken as a whole, the equipment package offers major benefits in terms of fuel saving and consists of five modes: manoeuvring, dieselelectrical, range, high speed and boost. This guarantees a high level of reliability and a better engine load. “It is not the individual technologies used on Savannah that are new in the yachting world – it is the way they have been combined,” comments the owner’s project manager, Ted McCumber. “The possibility to choose between diesel, diesel-electric or fully electric is rather exceptional nowadays. Moreover, Savannah is the first yacht in the world to be running with an azipull and a controllable pitch propeller. “Savannah is a yacht full of premiers,” emphasises Feadship director Henk de Vries. “As one of the first ever Dutch-built hybrid superyachts, she offers incredible flexibility in operations and loading of the power plant. The

result is fuel savings of some thirty per cent compared to the best boats that we have launched to date.” “The way in which one giant propeller has been installed in front with another electrically powered prop in its slipstream has also never been applied on a yacht. A similar system has been used on board passenger ships in Japan, but that is an ‘industrial’ solution, without the attention to comfort required on a Feadship. To achieve this on a superyacht entailed an exceptional degree of cooperation with Wärtsilä and all the other equipment manufacturers. “Another major innovation is the batteries, which were suggested by the owner. These provide extra speed at the top end, allow proper loading of the generators at any speed and facilitate super-quiet cruising at slow speeds without any engines turning. We have installed Li-ion batteries with no less than 1 million Watts.”

The Benefits of New Technology The innovative Dutch hybrid yachts are the ultimate dream for discerning yachtowners who care about the sea and its environment. Hybrid yachts made in Holland include both motoryachts and sailing yachts. They range from 46 to 83m and are powered by hybrid propulsion. Often coupled with an aerodynamic light-weight hull, this system enables the yachts to run on generators at low speeds ensuring low environmental impact. Combining new, vibrant lines and cutting-edge design, the Dutch deliveries embody a fresh and dynamic approach to yachting enhanced by spacious interiors and fantastically versatile open areas. MARINE PROPULSION & POWER GENERATION

Editor’s Picks for

Marine Propulsion & Power Generation MARINE DIESEL ENGINES ARE LIKELY TO REMAIN THE MOST COMMON FORM OF SUPERYACHTING IN THE SHORT TERM, BUT CONVERTING YACHTS TO USE hybrid technology would provide a cleaner and well understood alternative. In the medium-to-long term, the superyacht industry needs to adapt current technologies and develop new ones that use fuel cells and batteries augmented by renewable power sources such as solar. Dennis Vinkoert highlights a few of the latest developments in marine propulsion and power generation.

Caterpillar Marine

DELIVERING PHENOMENAL LOW-END TORQUE

Caterpillar Marine has introduced the Cat C8.7 supercharged diesel engines. The electronically-controlled C8.7 is capable of delivering an impressive 650 MHP @ 2300rpm while meeting EPA Tier 3, IMO 2, EU Stage IIIA and RCD emissions requirements. In addition to internal validation activities, the C8.7 recently completed field testing on three yachts, ranging from 48 to 55 feet, accumulating over 7,500 hours. The C8.7’s sophisticated fuel delivery system allows the use of a radial, belt driven supercharger in addition to a conventional turbocharger; this feature eliminates smoke and reduces

lugging, while delivering phenomenal low-end torque and impressive fuel economy. Once the supercharger is no longer needed as the turbo takes over the boost function, an electromagnetic clutch disengages the supercharger to avoid becoming a parasitic load and allows the turbo to provide the maximum permissible boost pressure. This renders the new engine impervious to turbocharger lag and allows rapid transient response throughout the engine’s operating range.

Fischer Panda

POWERFUL NEW INVERTER TECHNOLOGY

The Fischer Panda 150iPMS is a quantum leap in generator technology for superyachts. With savings in weight of more than 600kg the Panda 150iPMS is considerably lighter than conventional gen sets in the performance range of up to 150kVA. Thanks to its compact character it requires approximately 30 percent less space. This inverter generator is of particular interest for superyachts and large boats having varying electrical demands onboard. The variable speed technology takes full advantage of its modern diesel engine, designed to run at low speeds and meet current emission

standards. The engine speed is regulated according to the electrical load which makes it economical to run. This leads to fuel savings of 15-20 percent. Thanks to load sharing, an equal load of the generators in parallel operation can be maintained. Panda iSeries generators are very popular because of their variable speed, their high efficiency, low noise and compact design. Due to the inverter technology, both exhaust emission and fuel consumption can be remarkably reduced.

guarantees the elimination of engine soot. A zero NOx system has been developed to comply with future IMO III emission standards. The Zero Soot System offers reliable reduction of harmful engines’ emissions of auxiliary diesel engine under all circumstances. These generators are thoroughly clean and without soot. This means that guests on board are not annoyed by particulates on deck or with diesel exhaust residues in swimming water, nor by the smell of diesel engine exhaust gas. The complete product range has been especially designed to create a perfect match for either dry or wet exhaust configurations. As a matter of fact, the Zero Soot System is compact, Lloyd’s Register approved, and guarantees clean generator power wherever you sail. Zenoro provides both electrical Zero Soot Systems for smaller size generators and fuel burners. There’s also a Zero Soot Systems available for large sized generators. The manufacturing of an electrical variant is market driven and in order to provide a more economical system. A bypass both for electrical and fuel burner variants was made to avoid compromises. The Zero NOx System is currently under development to comply with future IMO III emissions, in certain areas and can be combined with the Zero Soot System. Professionals commissioning a new yacht always want to work with the best components. From architects to shipyard, all those involved in a new build require ultimate performance from suppliers, technologies and materials. The company’s broad experience, flexibility and innovative strength have proven time and formed a solid foundation for projects.

conditions all have their impact, even though this may not be visible. A refit project is the perfect moment, not just to replace worn-out components, but to calibrate performance according to the owner’s specs. A yacht’s crew knows better than anyone whether the generator still meets the owner’s needs. The secret behind many successful refits is smooth project processes, and effective communication, tailored to the clients and based on extensive experience and knowledge. Zenoro engineers know each generator unit like the back of their hands. No other expert can assist more efficiently. With remote diagnostic tools, the performance of each Zenoro generator and Zero Soot System on board can be monitored from remote on request. A detailed diagnosis and service advice will be provided, without the necessity of actually visiting the yacht. Requests are dealt with in just a short period of time. NPS Diesel provides 24/7 support worldwide.

Savannah HYBRID SUPERYACHT BY FEADSHIP

JANUARY 25 WITNESSED THE FESTIVE LAUNCHING OF THE SAVANNAH, AN 83.5M HYBRID MEGAYACHT BUILT BY FEADSHIP IN THE NETHERLANDS. The Savannah is the largest yacht ever painted with a metallic paint system (Sea Foam metallic green). She is also one of the first eco-friendly blend of single diesel engine, three gensets, batteries, propeller, and azimuthing pioneering electromechanical propulsion platforms, providing 30% fuel savings. The yacht’s exterior has been created in close partnership between CG Design and Feadship.

YACHT REPORT

Feadship launched Savannah, a hybrid motoryacht.

Million Watts Savannah’s interior features an owner’s stateroom, four guest suites and one VIP stateroom with a balcony. She has room for 26 crew. There is also a tender bay finished in teak with a hatch that doubles as a mooring platform. After docking, guests can walk inside the garage and take the stairs straight up to the main deck. “Savannah is a yacht full of firsts,” says Feadship director Henk de Vries. “As one of the the first-ever hybrid superyachts, she offers incredible flexibility in operations and loading of the power plant. The way in which one gigantic propeller has been installed in front with another electrically powered prop in its slipstream has never been applied on a yacht. A similar system has been used on board passenger ships in Japan, but that is an ‘industrial’ solution, without the attention to comfort required on a Feadship. Another major innovation is the batteries, which were suggested by the owner. These provide extra speed at the top end, allow proper loading of the generators at any speed, and mean super-quiet cruising at low speeds without any engines turning. We have installed Li-ion batteries with no less than one million Watts.”

Underwater Lounge In the exterior, profile glass and composite panels appear to float thanks to complex visual

trickery involving polished stainless steel strips, aluminium supports and teak. The main deck and owner’s deck aft have been designed as single giant open inside/outside spaces, enclosed by weathertight sliding doors. With the sides of the main lounge open, the entire space from the swimming pool to the salon serves as an alfresco experience zone. “The owner of Savannah loves to be at one with the water,” says Captain Ted McCumber. “This phenomenal design allows him to run from the main salon and dive straight into the sea.” One of the many structural highlights is an ‘underwater lounge’ on the port side where guests can watch the fish outside, or turn around and observe the fun and games in the 9m swimming pool.

More Than Meets the Eye But there’s much more to Savannah, as you can see for yourself in the pictures. Look at how the stainless steel doors form part of the yacht’s continuous line and also appear to be floating thanks to the remarkable work of CG Design and Feadship’s designers. Guests will certainly take a moment to admire the exterior colour scheme in Sea Foam metallic green. A human machine of several dozen craftsmen spent many weekends in a climatecontrolled tent to create what is the world’s largest metallic-painted object. They used special mixing machines and electrically-

What we cannot show you here due to privacy agreements is the interior, but we are allowed to share a few words on this equally amazing artifice. Savannah has an ‘underwater lounge’ where guests can watch the fish outside or turn around and observe the fun and games in the 9m swimming pool. The room, which also converts into a cinema, is another first for a superyacht and features especially thick glass due to its position in the hull.

Some of the Savannah’s energy efficiency comes from its highly advanced propeller system.

In a Nutshell The yacht features revolutionary power systems. Along with the ship’s ultra-thin bow and highly advanced propeller design, this makes her one of the most efficient superyachts ever built. The eco-friendly electro-mechanical propulsion is, of course, very complex. In a nutshell, however, it features a pioneering blend of a single Wärtsilä main engine, three generators, some one million Watts of Li-ion batteries, a single central propeller shaft installation on the centreline and an in-line azimuthing thruster. In combination with the yacht’s super streamlined hull shape, Savannah enjoys fuel economies of thirty percent and incredible flexibility in operations and loading of the power plant. One giant single propeller has been installed in front with another electrically powered propeller in its slipstream, a feature that has never been seen on a yacht before. “The selection possibility to choose between diesel, dieselelectric or fully electric is truly exceptional.” Regarding this massive project, superyacht broker Alex G. Clarke said “Having been lucky enough to preview Savannah the week before her international debut I can easily state she is truly one of the more remarkable yachts I have ever seems both cosmetically and with her advances in technology which I feel will help shape the future of the industry.”

Striking Innovations The 83.50m Savannah, packs in a range of features designed to make cruising more efficient and life at sea more comfortable. The combination of a single diesel engine, three gensets, a battery bank, a contra-roatating azimuthing prop and a streamlined hull shape offer claimed fuel economies of 30 percent. Further striking innovations include a ‘floating’ superstructure and an underwater lounge. The fine-entry hull is powered by a single Wärtsilä main engine with a propeller that is around 40 percent bigger than usual. A large

electrically powered contra-rotating and azimuthing stern thruster is aft of the main propeller to ensure excellent manoeuvrability at close quarters. “It is not the individual technologies used on Savannah that are new in the yachting world – it is the way they have been combined,” says Mr McCumber. “Feadship has leveraged all the options available

to bring this hugely innovative system to completion. The possibility to choose between diesel, diesel-electric or fully electric is truly exceptional. Moreover, Savannah is one of the the first yachts in the world to be running with an azipull and a controllable-pitch propeller.”

Deutsche Yachten Deutsche Yachten Germany represented an affilation of different firms from the broad spectrum of the German yacht building and yachting equipment supply industry. Established 15 years ago, the group has since developed to become an integral part of the yacht industry and now represents an independent quality mark. Deutsche Yachten, Germany‘s superyacht group with famous brands like Tilse, Wolz Nautic, Yachtlite, Oldenburger Interior, Gehr Interior, Dornbracht, Piening Propeller, Multiplex, Erwin Sattler and others.

Superyacht Manufacturing The UAE is set to build on its position as one of the world‘s leading international yacht manufacturing hubs as local manufacturers expand their operations, international developers relocate and the maritime industry expands with coastline developments, according to industry experts. The UAE currently ranks ninth in the world for superyacht manufacturing, with 15 projects under development, according to the 2015 ShowBoats International Global Order Book. Dr. Khalid AI Zahed, Vice Chairman, Dubai International Marine Club Board, said: “This year‘s Dubai International Boat Show will reaffirm Dubai‘s status as a leisure marine hub. As the water-based lifestyle becomes increasingly popular in Dubai, we will see this sector continue to expand and grow in the future. Dubai‘s commitment to excellence in everything it does will drive the marine industry to achieve new heights and bring more visitors to the city.” According to the Dubai Council for Marine and Maritime Industries (DCMMI), the total UAE maritime industry is worth more than USD 61 billion, with 386 boats above 24m built in 2014, up 8% on 2013. The fleet of yachts in Dubai has doubled since 2009 and the DCMMI predicts the creation of a national classification society – Tasneef – and the introduction of the world‘s first code governing private yachts, the UAE Yacht Code, will boost the industry‘s future development.

THIRD EDITION GAMMA 20 DISPLAYS VRIPACK’S SMART DESIGN

Libertas GAMMA YACHTS HAS ANNOUNCED THE DELIVERY OF 22.1M LIBERTAS, THE THIRD IN ITS GAMMA 20 ‘MINI’ SUPERYACHT SERIES, TO OPERA singer Andrea Bocelli. It is the most customised Gamma 20 so far – with innovative design by Dutch company Vripack and impressive guest space for its length overall as well as excellent fuel efficiency.

T

he main elements of the Gamma 20 that are dictated to a client are the hull and superstructure shape; almost all other aspects can be adapted to the client’s tastes, much like you would expect on a yacht of a larger size,” says Gamma Yachts CEO Guido Bonandrini. “Particularly to the exterior fly bridge, we have seen major variations in each of the vessels delivered so far. The owner of Libertas, celebrated opera singer Andrea Bocelli, took the customisation even further than the previous Gamma 20 customers.”

Eye Catcher Built and designed in Holland, Libertas combines the precision and technical capabilities of the Dutch with world-class interior furnishings and materials from Italy. Although the traditional threshold for a superyacht starts at 30m in length, the degree of customisation available to an owner in the Gamma 20 is much closer to that of a superyacht than any other vessel in this size range. For this yacht’s exterior, Mr Bocelli specified a table and sofa to be placed fore of the wheelhouse to offer true immersion into the surroundings, particularly when underway. There is also a custom-built diving board on the extended fly bridge to jump off the uppermost point of the yacht, and the hull is painted in an eye-catching metallic electric blue. The decking comes in teak as standard and there is an optional hydraulic swim platform that lowers into the water at the stern.

Superyacht Experience Taking full use of the volume provided by the bow, the Gamma 20 offers quarters for two crewmembers plus 170m2 of living space including the lower deck, main deck, fly bridge and walk-around. The addition of a fourth cabin in this yacht increases the accommodation up to nine guests. Furthermore, the windows in the master cabin have been increased to let in more light. Double-glazing insulates the interior, allowing the piano and recording studio equipment to be used in the main salon. For the interior finishes, the owner chose matte oak panelling with natural oak floors. The galley is outfitted with white Parapan and a grey stained oak flooring. Vripack’s award-winning designers carried out extensive testing and modelling to ensure the Gamma 20 matches the expectations of an owner looking for a superyacht experience in

a more compact vessel. Vripack worked on the noise and vibration testing with Dutch firm Van Cappellen Consultancy, which also provided the insulation. Stabilisers from Naiad offer guests equal comfort whether at anchor or docked in a marina. As well as adding additional space for crew accommodation forward, the bow shape also provides excellent fuel economy for the yacht, which has a range of 1,270nm on 5,500l of fuel.

Short Build Time “The Gamma 20 has more to her than meets the eye. Below the curvaceous shape lies a luxury yacht concept that we approached with our holistic design philosophy. We believe that a great boat functions as a whole instead of a loose combination of separate parts,” says Marnix Hoekstra of Vripack. “There are a number of striking features that prove the power of such holistic thinking,” continues Bart Bouwhuis, also of Vripack. “For instance, the lack of steps and obstructions: each deck is truly on one level, preventing the risk of tripping. This is combined with fast displacement hull lines that are used specifically for comfort at anchor and at sea. The approach goes as far as the actual structure of the yacht to minimise the building time, applying our proprietary Smart Kit building technology. This allows the boat to be built faster as well as for a more rigid end product, which reduces noise and vibration to improve the guests’ experience.”

owned several vessels in this size range, comments that the newly delivered Gamma 20 is by far his favorite: “I love the way space has been arranged so that our large extended family can be together, enjoying closeness and intimacy, while at the same time respecting everybody’s privacy. A yacht must meet precise needs and be able to make us feel at ease; it must comply with – and express both architecturally and technically – the same priorities as those living on it. Coziness, warm materials, safety, low noise levels and comfort: these were my needs, and they have been fully met. I needed a solid, safe and comfortable boat, and I am very happy with my choice for Gamma 20.”

hen Holland America Line welcomes ms Koningsdam to the fleet in February 2016, the ship will debut a new era in design approach for the line. As the first ship in the Pinnacle class, the 2,650-guest ship will have an interior that blends a fresh, contemporary styling in perfect harmony with the line’s renowned classic elegance. Future guests, travel agents and ship fans can now get the first look at select interior renderings on Holland America Line’s website, www.hollandamerica.com. The story of the ship will unfold online over the coming months through vibrant renderings, engaging videos, ship facts and more details about the interiors

created by Adam D. Tihany and Bjørn Storbraaten. “When guests come aboard ms Koningsdam they’ll know they’re on a Holland America Line ship, but they’ll see we’re taking a forwardthinking approach to many of the design elements,” said Stein Kruse, CEO of Holland America Group. “Revealing the first renderings and video of ms Koningsdam enables us to give future guests an advance look at the stunning interiors and over the coming months will reveal innovative new features along with our classics hallmarks that will create a cruise experience for the travellers of tomorrow.”

Luxurious and Creative Interiors At the helm of the interior conceptualisation is Mr Tihany, regarded as one of the world’s preeminent hospitality designers. A leader in creating luxurious and creative interiors at some of the world’s most iconic properties, Mr Tihany has approached ms Koningsdam with an eye toward creating public spaces that reflect the tradition and signature elegance for which Holland America Line is known. At the same time the design has been elevated to strike a more modern balance of past, present and future. Focussing on fluid curves and graceful lines, light-filled spaces and the natural flow of public areas, Mr Tihany’s metaphorical approach

to the interiors of ms Koningsdam was inspired by the ‘architecture of music’. “The idea was to tell a story that guests can connect with throughout their voyage,” said Mr Tihany. “I was inspired by the thought of what you might see from the inside of a musical instrument, what the architecture of the surfaces and the geometry look like.” Key to his concept is utilising visual interaction, where guests actively engage with the architecture rather than passively moving through it. “The design isn’t a literal translation of music, but a conceptual approach where we seek to evoke the feeling and beauty of an instrument with graceful lines, dramatic textures, lighting effects and use of materials,” said Mr Tihany. “My inspirations were not only instruments, but also majestic spaces and exaggerating the feeling of height, so guests feel the grandeur of every room.” For example, at the heart of the ship Tihany is creating visual drama with the central atrium. Soaring three decks high, the space is graced by an airy stainless-steel sculpture that represents the synthesis of a string quartet. Like music, the experience changes as guests move

around and through it, so no two perspectives are the same. The atrium is capped by a ceiling ‘skylight’ that serves as a backdrop for subtly changing high-definition projections. Guests will look up by day and see wispy cirrus clouds floating in an azure sky or perhaps soothing images of light in water. By evening, the atrium takes on dramatic lighting hues or reflects the starlit constellations of the night sky.

Hallmark Venues The main Dining Room aboard ms Koningsdam will span two floors and be framed by views of the sea. A bright interior will be inspired by a modern, global design and sets the stage for the exceptional culinary experience to come. Strong, curved architectural pillars will accentuate the soaring ceiling. Chic, custom furnishings and modern glass lighting are being fabricated especially for the ship. The centerpiece is a curved copper sheath surrounding a two-story wine tower showcasing an impressive selection. The iconic Queen’s Lounge has been completely reimagined as an elegant theatre and entertainment venue that spans two floors. Tihany once again drew inspiration for the space from music, nodding to the sensual curves of a violin and featuring extensive use of wood, fluid waveforms and light. With state-of-the-art technology, the Queen’s Lounge will showcase

world-class musicians and the largest dance floor on the ship.

Blending Contemporary Styling Architect and designer Bjørn Storbraaten joins Tihany in bringing the ship to life in a familiar yet innovative style. With his previous work on ms Eurodam and ms Nieuw Amsterdam, Mr Storbraaten adds continuity of the brand to ms Koningsdam, while taking elegance to the next level. “It’s been fascinating to work on ms Koningsdam where we are introducing design elements never before seen on Holland America Line,” said Mr Storbraaten. “We were tasked with evolving the look and feel of the ship while keeping it true to the brand, making this an exciting and rewarding project.” Mr Storbraaten’s hand is clearly present in the design of the central pool area. The Magrodome, which typically is a single level on Holland America Line ships, has been expanded to two levels to create a vast glass-enclosed space. The lower level will have more traditional poolside elements, while the mezzanine level will be a new concept for the brand. In addition to other areas, Mr Storbraaten is designing the exotic look of Tamarind, the line’s Pan-Asian restaurant that emphasises nature’s basic elements: water, wood, fire and earth. Across

the ship, Mr Tihany and Mr Storbraaten are working together to make ms Koningsdam an evolution of the Holland America Line brand.

Tailored State Rooms When ms Koningsdam debuts in 2016, the ship will feature Holland America Line’s first-ever purpose-built staterooms for families as well as single staterooms among its 1,331 guest accommodations (total capacity is 2,650). In addition, many familiar stateroom categories such as Neptune, Signature and Vista suites will be available in a wider range of sizes and different configurations to choose from. The 32 new, specially designed, family ocean-view staterooms will range from 67 to 70 m2 and feature special amenities such as two bathrooms and accommodations for five people. The twelve single ocean-view cabins will range from 38 to 52 m2 in size and will be available on the forward Main Deck. “A cruise is one of the most popular ways to State rooms include special Signature suites. 5 2 | S Y I 2 0 1 5 | Vo l u m e 1 0 | Issue 2

travel as a family, and we continue to welcome more multigenerational groups each year. To help us better serve families, we are pleased to be able to offer these tailored staterooms on ms Koningsdam,” said Richard Meadows, Executive Vice president, Sales, Marketing and Guest Programs. “And the new one-person staterooms enable us to serve the growing market of solo travellers.” With a sophisticated colour palette and the freedom to design from the ground up based on guest feedback, ms Koningsdam’s staterooms and suites feature a host of modern functional details such as bedside USB ports, custom casework and frameless glass shower doors that feel elegant and luxurious. Additional amenities found in all suites and staterooms include Holland America Line’s signature Mariner’s Dream bed with finely woven cotton linens, plush bathrobes for use during the voyage, a premium massage showerhead, flat-panel TV with video-on-demand, mini fridge, complimentary fresh fruit on request and

fragrant soaps, lotions, shampoo and other bath amenities from Elemis Aromapure. On ms Koningsdam, the ‘suite life’ gets sweeter with larger, more luxurious quarters. A grand Pinnacle Suite is an expansive 393m2 with a bedroom, living room, dining area, dressing room and private verandah with whirlpool. The two Neptune Spa Suites and 43 Neptune Suites range from a generous 141 to a huge 260m2. Neptune and Pinnacle Suite guests have access to the exclusive Neptune Lounge, a private place to relax, socialise with other suite guests and enjoy the personalised service of a concierge. The fleetwide lounges provide worktables, a large screen television, library, sofas and chairs, and complimentary refreshments throughout the day.

Thoughtful Details Pinnacle and Neptune Suite amenities also include corsages and boutonnieres for the first formal night, a cocktail party with the ship’s

officers, priority dining and seating requests, binoculars and umbrellas for use during the cruise, a wall-unit bar, cold hors d’oeuvres served before dinner each evening on request and complimentary laundry, pressing and dry cleaning throughout the cruise and more. The fourteen Signature Suites are up to 122m2 in size and the 104 Vista Suites range from 80 to 109m2. Signature and Vista suite guests receive many special amenities, including personalised cruise stationery, oversized bath towels, fresh flowers, a pillow menu, mini bar and one-touch phone concierge service. “Holland America Line is known in the cruise industry for providing well-appointed staterooms,” said My Nguyen, Holland America Line’s Deputy Director of Interior Design. “With ms Koningsdam we enhanced these qualities by including many thoughtful details that improve the functionality of the staterooms. We also adopted a colour pallet that takes advantage of texture and quiet colour combinations to achieve a feeling of serenity and luxuriousness in each category.” The ship will have the most staterooms with verandahs in the Holland America Line fleet with 912 total from Verandah to Pinnacle Suite categories. Guests looking to focus on health and wellness during the cruise can book verandah spa accommodations, conveniently located near the Greenhouse Spa & Salon, that come with yoga mats for use during the voyage and an iPod docking station. For guests looking for a more affordable option, the line is offering 266 standard or large interior accommodations up to 68m2.

Pamper Yourself at Sea Today’s luxury cruise ships are designed to keep everyone happy. Want to pamper yourself at the spa while your spouse hits the casino? Or lounge in the sun reading a book while your family plays basketball. You can go to an educational lecture, a wine tasting, a computer class or a dance workshop; paint pottery, play bridge, learn a language or do yoga; dine at a casual buffet, a fancy sit-down restaurant, a sushi bar, a diner or a steakhouse; watch a movie, a comedy routine, a song-and-dance show or live music performance. And if all you want to do is nothing while the ship sails from port to port you can do that, too. Last but not least, a cruise is one of the best ways to see the most exotic and foreign destinations in the world in an easy way.

THE LEGEND LIVES

Maybach ZEPPELIN

THE MAYBACH ZEPPELIN SPEARHEADS MAYBACH’S LUXURY SALOON MODEL RANGE. THE MODEL, WHICH PREMIERED IN 2009 AT THE GENEVA Motor Show, still represents the absolute zenith in the high-end luxury saloon segment. This makes it a worthy successor to the legendary original Maybach Zeppelin, which was revered worldwide as the ultimate in high-class automotive engineering in the 1930s.

Even Greater Power The hallmark features of the Maybach flagship’s unique sense of style include a stunning paint finish, featuring a shoulderline in a contrasting colour, as well as the exquisite, meticulously crafted materials in the interior, whose long list of optional extras includes a world first – a highly sophisticated perfume atomiser. The model‘s performance even outclasses the rest of the Maybach range, making it the most powerful Maybach ever at its launch. In a nutshell: the Maybach Zeppelin still epitomises stylish elegance and the art of vehicle manufacture at its most refined as no car has ever done before. The Maybach Zeppelin has been built in a limited edition of just 100 worldwide. Even today, the name ‘Zeppelin’ has an incomparable ring to it in the realm of high-end luxury cars. As in bygone times, Maybach has built the Maybach Zeppelin for drivers who are seeking something extra special, even in this most luxurious of automotive segments. Not only do the Maybach 57 Zeppelin and Maybach 62 Zeppelin stand out for their exquisite elegance, inventive ideas and phenomenal performance, only one hundred of these special model versions of the high-end luxury saloons will be made worldwide. At its lauch the Maybach 57 S and the long-wheelbase version,

the Maybach 62 S, served as the technical basis for the new range-topping model. Supreme performance is assured in both cases by the 6.0 litre V12 bi-turbo power unit under the bonnet, which now delivers 471kW and a peak torque of 1,000Nm.

Two-tone Exterior Whatever angle it is viewed from, the Maybach Zeppelin radiates character and the sort of style which appeals to all the senses. From the outside, the luxury brand‘s new top-of-therange model can be recognised by its two-tone special paint finish. The shoulderline is painted right through to the background of the headlamp assemblies in Rocky Mountains light brown, which forms a stylish and scintillating contrast to the Taiga black finish used for the rest of the vehicle body. Dark red tail light units and a fine vertical partition in the tailpipe add striking visual touches at the rear. Naturally, customers may also specify their Maybach Zeppelin in any other paint finish they wish. The Maybach Zeppelin‘s newly designed 20-inch wheels in a Chrome Shadow finish complete the picture. These were first painted with a black undercoat, before having a silver topcoat applied using an elaborate painting process that causes the tone to gradually increase in darkness from the outside in. The streamlined exterior mirrors, which produce even less wind noise, are new to Maybach. They have a more angular design and are separated from the door frame by a slender arm, giving them a more expressive look. They also feature an enlarged mirror surface together with integral indicators in the shape of a horizontal ‘V’ for even greater perceptual safety. The curving ‘Zeppelin’ lettering that appears below the distinctive double ‘M’ emblem on the radiator grille and on the boot lid instantly gives away the elite status of the new Maybach Zeppelin.

Finest-quality Leather The new Maybach Zeppelin is a car for connoisseurs, as is immediately apparent from its interior. Here, the luxurious leather appointments in California beige leather form a delightful contrast with the exclusive leather in deep Stromboli black that gives added impact to the shoulderline on the inside too. At the same time, the lustrous deep black tone of the leather harmonises beautifully with the exquisite piano lacquer finish of the trim elements. The precisely crafted contrasting topstitching in

the dashboard and on the doors reinforces the Maybach Zeppelin‘s sense of dynamism. The unusual diamond quilting pattern on the seat cushions and backrests together with the black piping gives the opulently styled seats a character all of their own. The occupants‘ feet rest on genuine lambskin carpeting. The limited-edition special models bear a number of discreet identifying markings in the interior too. The centre console in the front, the partition screen that is available as an option for the Maybach Zeppelin 62, plus the silver champagne flutes included as standard are all marked with the lettering ‘Maybach Zeppelin’, while the door sill panels as well as the key ring are engraved with the word ‘Zeppelin’.

World’s First Customers are able to opt for an especially refined equipment detail that is exclusive to the Maybach Zeppelin – an imaginatively designed, extremely high-quality perfume atomiser, the only one of its kind in the world. It easily eclipses all previous efforts to produce something similar, both in terms of its visual appeal and its

Maybach.indd 56

operation. Its sophisticated technology and premium fragrances, which can be individually chosen, create a unique aromatic experience in the Maybach Zeppelin‘s interior at the push of a button – stimulating the senses of the occupants not with an overpowering perfume but with a soft, delicate scent. The system‘s core component is an internally illuminated Plexiglass sphere on the rear centre console, into which Maybach Zeppelin owners can insert a vial of their preferred fragrance. A regulator pump then directs a gentle flow of air into the Plexiglass sphere, fanning the vial‘s perfume molecules into the vehicle interior.

Ingenious Control The perfume atomiser can be activated either from the driver‘s seat or by means of a button in the rear centre console, with an additional thumbwheel in the rear for sensitive aroma control. The chosen fragrance gently wafts into the passenger compartment within ten to twelve seconds. On models with a partition screen, only the passengers in the rear are able to activate the atomiser. The aroma experts took

the human sense of smell into consideration when designing the control mechanism. As the nose adjusts to smells in such a way that it no longer perceives them after a short while, the perfume atomiser switches off after about ten minutes. Once the system has switched off, the fragrance – which does not seep into the interior‘s materials or the occupants‘ clothes – quickly evaporates. Reactivating the atomiser later allows the experience to be enjoyed all over again.

Artistic The system comes supplied with two select fragrances, which have been exclusively developed for the Maybach by a renowned perfumer from global specialist Givaudan: one light and refreshing, the other slightly heavier and woodier. Maybach Zeppelin owners can also use other fragrances, or even have one specially developed and enjoy the luxury of immersing themselves in their very own, personally designed aroma. The fragrance holders are easily interchangeable. The specification

There won‘t be a 50:50 split; Daimler will, however, make many of each wheelbase are ordered until the 100 units are reached. The latest ultra-luxury sedan is based on the last-generation Mercedes-Benz S-class

Maybach was shuttered in 2011, after parent company Daimler AG decided that its decadelong relaunch of the century-old luxury brand wasn‘t worth the trouble. Daimler planned to raise the dead and revive Maybach – not as an independent line, but as a high-end MercedesBenz. The 50th birthday of the best-known Pullman sedan of them all, the Mercedes-Benz 600, is set to coincide with a special debut at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show: the launch of the new Pullman. Mercedes-Maybach‘s second model will assume the top-of-the-range position, with vis-à-vis seating in the passenger compartment and high-end automotive luxury that is traditionally associated with Maybach. Its length of 6.5m alone is a sign of the special status of the Mercedes-Maybach Pullman. It provides space for a generously-sized and tastefullyappointed club lounge in the rear, which has a multitude of creature comforts fitted as standard. Many governments, rulers and royal families around the world have for decades chosen Mercedes-Benz sedans with the designation ‘Pullman’ to drive them with the stateliness and style befitting their status. With its new model, the company is now extending its unique position in this demanding segment. Quite apart from providing stately and stylish seating for high-ranking passengers in the comfort and spaciousness for which it is famed, the new Mercedes-Maybach Pullman is of course the embodiment of exclusivity at its highest level. One can sense the significance and greatness of it in every detail.

Kohler Marine Gensets

Gleistein Ropes is the Official Rope Supplier to the Neutrogena Sailing Team. Gleistein Ropes has equipped Neutrogena with lines made with Dyneema, the world’s strongest fibre. Gleistein has exclusively used Dyneema fibres for its ropes for many years. Piening Controllable Propeller

When it comes to developments in marine propulsors it can be concluded that German manufacturer Piening Propeller is going strong. Piening Propeller is marketing a new Piening Controllable Propeller (PCP) designed to ensure sustainability for current and future regulations. The PCPs can be delivered four- or five-bladed, the hydraulic pitch control uses ordinary water and operational costs are vey low. The very high efficiency PCPs feature a low noise and vibration signature thanks to their hydrodynamic design. Of course, the PCP can be delivered in compliance with the requirements of major classification societies. Another product from Piening Propeller is a new remote control system featuring state-of-the-art technology and suitable for shipboard interface systems. The system can be applied as main and wing station and as ECR control station. Last, but not least, is an environmental-friendly hub and hydraulic system designed to operate with water. i. www.piening-propeller.de

The range of power generators for the superyacht industry has been extended by Kohler. The company has made available the 17.5EFKOZD and 20EFKOZD single-phase and 16.5EFKZOD and 19.5EFKOZD three-phase marine generator sets. These new generator sets feature Kohler Diesel Tier III engines. These packs feature the latest DEC 3500 controls, and new and improved sound shields. The Kohler Diesel CARB/EPA Tier III emissions compliant engines feature low exhaust smoke levels and an air induction silencer for reduced sound levels compared to previous models. The gen sets further feature improved sound shields consisting of new and improved bulkhead panels and performance-enhanced sound shields. i. www.kohlerpower.com/marine

Cat C8.7 Caterpillar Marine has launched the Cat C8.7 supercharged diesel engines. The electronically-controlled C8.7 delivers an impressive 480kW @ 2300rpm while meeting EPA Tier 3, IMO 2, EU Stage IIIA and RCD emissions requirements. In addition to internal validation activities, the C8.7 recently completed field testing on three yachts, ranging from 14.6 to 16.7m, accumulating over 7,500 hours. The C8.7’s sophisticated fuel delivery system allows the use of a radial, belt-driven supercharger in addition to a conventional turbocharger; this feature eliminates smoke and reduces lugging, while delivering phenomenal low-end torque and impressive fuel economy. Once the supercharger is no longer needed as the turbo takes over the boost function, an electromagnetic clutch disengages the supercharger to avoid becoming a parasitic load and allows the turbo to provide the maximum permissible boost pressure. This renders the new engine impervious to turbocharger lag and allows rapid transient response throughout the engine’s operating range. i. www.marine.cat.com

MTU Diesel MTU Marine engines provide speed with a great deal of comfort, enjoyment with responsibility and luxury with maximum reliability. Luxury yachts fitted with MTU engines meet the highest demands on performance, economy, handling and safety. MTU engines feature an impressive power-to-weight ratio and a broad engine map that ensures optimal performance in all engine speed ranges. The low consumption values, running smoothness, and good handling of the drive systems are the ideal factors in making your private cruises limitlessly enjoyable. Just as reliable as MTU products is the company’s service. MTU is always there for you, all over the world, around the clock, and provides the service that meets your wants and needs. Available in numerous cylinder configurations, engine series bearing the MTU brand cover a wide performance spectrum ranging to 10,000kW and are thus capable of powering numerous yachts and genset systems. i. www.mtu-online.com
