moguls; but a 1980s refit stripped her of both her style and her dignity. It fell to her present day owner to restore her elegant lines and create an interior that evoked her original 1930s splendour. Drawing inspiration from the grand art deco houses, a wealth of bespoke joinery - from chevronpatterned sycamore veneers to roto-cut Japanese tamo ash and European tiger oak - reflects the passion of the era for mixing exotic woods and unique cuts. The result is a vessel that, from stem to stern, has spectacularly recaptured not just her youth, but her beauty. And, as has always been our maxim, true beauty lies within. www.ruiter.com

Editor’s note
Wide Awake There is an iTalian proverb ThaT sTaTes: he who sleeps caTches no fish – and The iTalian yachTing world has cerTainly noT been sleeping. Therefore, it only seems fitting for the first issue of superyacht industry of this year to focus on the first ranked country of the yachting world. showboats international’s global order book 2016 has revealed that the italians are holding a strong position at the top of the chart with 286 new build projects for 2016, while expedition yacht orders have increased 17% from last year. The market for yachts over 100-metres remains strong with 21 in build and four delivered in 2015. also a noteworthy item was that many projects that were reported as being ‘on hold’ for several years have now become active again and the refit sector continues to grow – a strong indication that the industry is not only fully recovered but thriving. ranked in first place in order of build length, azimut benetti has 63 new build projects for 2016, in second place is sanlorenzo and ferretti group sits in third place. The italians dominate the market over 24-metres, with a strong order book of builds between 24 to 30-metres. and that is not the only good news for the land of rich innovation, beauty and finesse when it comes to yachting. The italians would have gravely felt the impact of the new Tier iii nox regulations that came into effect on 1 January 2016. however, a serious dip in the market was avoided through successful lobbying from the international council of Marine industry associations and the superyacht builders association. This led to a five year delay for compliance for yachts over 24 metres and less than 500 gross tonnes – an italian speciality. read more about italian ingenuity in this issues editors picks. furthermore we preview the palma superyacht show which is the fourth edition and biggest event to date. listen up and get connected as we delve into Marine electronics and enterntainment systems. and last but certainly not least, our refit & repair segment takes a look inside an interior masterpiece. news in brief First IMO Tier III emission certification achieved in Veth Propulsion test facility
SYI FEATURE
In close cooperation with Veth Propulsion, yacht builder Amels meet stringent new International Maritime Organization (IMO) emissions regulations with Veth Generator sets in the Dutch test facility. The successful test under independent Lloyd’s Register class supervision ensures that the Veth Generator sets, provided for the new 188 Amels yacht 57.7m, meet the new IMO Tier III NOx emission limits and reduces the environmental impact. “Innovation is one of the core values of Veth Propulsion. We are very proud that we are the first manufacturer of generator sets, which has achieved this milestone and we thank Amels for the pleasant cooperation,” says Peter van Helden, Project Manager Veth Propulsion. For this project we suited our generator sets for heat recovery. This system uses residual energy from the Scania engines to heat potable water, the jacuzzi and increase HVAC reheating efficiency.”
RINA launches new services Italy-based classification society RINA has launched a series of new services and standards aimed at reducing the global yacht industry’s environmental footprint. The five new services include a Global Compliance certification for boats to show they meet both US and EU standards, a set of courses and certification for marina managers, electromagnetic interference & hazard evaluation, a new class notation for yachts that measures the environmental impact of the whole life cycle of the yachts and new rules for a more extensive use of glass on the hull and superstructure. RINA is the first European class society with surveyors qualified to carry out NMMA inspection for boats built in Europe or other parts of the world which are to be sold or used in the USA. Tankoa’s Suerte was the first yacht to be tested as a pilot project to assess its compliance with European standards. Read more about Suerte on page 27.

NEWS IN BRIEF Van der Valk unveils new Continental Five range Van der Valk Shipyard in the Netherlands has revealed an impressive concept for a new 38-metre explorer yacht. The Continental Five range has been developed in partnership with Guido de Groot in a variety of exterior designs, ranging from futuristic to classic. Despite the wide range of choices available in terms of her exterior profile lines, the overall design of the Continental Five has a distinctly masculine character. Sporting a round-bilge hull, owners can opt for a full displacement version with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure or an all-aluminium fast-displacement vessel.

2015, VITRUVIUS YACHTS IS SET
With three widely renowned motoryachts of 50, 55, and 73-metres delivered by Italian yachtbuilder Picchiotti since 2010 and a completed conversion on the 71-metre explorer vessel Engima XK at Atlantic Refit Center, 2015 was a landmark year for Vitruvius Yachts. The London-based design and naval architecture company, led by Veerle Battiau and Philippe Briand, signed two new build projects at prominent shipyards, including Feadship de Vries in Holland and Turquoise in Turkey. Vitruvius Yachts also announced a number of exciting new collaborative projects for design concepts. Ms Veerle Battiau, Director of Vitruvius Yachts, said of the year’s successes: “We are excited by what the future holds at Vitruvius Yachts. As well as our ongoing relationship with Picchiotti, this year we secured some wonderful new projects that look set to take our designs in new and challenging directions. The vision of our head designer Philippe Briand, complemented by the skills of his 10-strong team of design and naval architecture specialists, will now be realised by world-class superyacht builders in three countries within the next three years.”
TO ENTER THE NEW YEAR WITH A number of fully custom motoryacht projects on the drafting table and under construction with world-class superyacht builders, ranging from 60-metre to 105-metre in length.

The project to be built at Feadship de Vries is a 58-metre motoryacht, which is due for delivery in 2018 and will have a design reference of a ‘beach house on the water’. The 80-metre VY80 is the first yacht to be commissioned under the newly rebranded Turquoise name, with expected completion in 2018. It will feature significant use of glass to give a sense of transparency and openness, while maintaining an intimate ‘family feeling’. The yacht will include a dedicated owner’s deck and accommodate 12 guests and 21 crewmembers. As with award-winning Grace E, the VY80 will offer a significant amount of space for wellness and fitness adjacent to the beach club, as well as 395m2 of exterior decks, an infinity swimming pool and two Jacuzzis.
The Ideal Proportion The Vitruvius philosophy focuses on creating custom motor yachts that are efficient, robust and long-range, capable of independent global cruising. Drawing on the world-class pedigree of Philippe Briand’s highly evolved sailing yachts, of which over 12,000 have been produced to date, Vitruvius Yachts uses the Briand Optimised Stretched (BOS) hull design,

based on the ethos of ‘ideal proportion’ seen in Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man. The 105-metre Acquaintance concept by Vitruvius Yachts and Dutch shipyard Oceanco maintains this core philosophy of balance, efficiency and optimization and has been designed to be 20% more efficient than other motoryachts of its size.
The Land Yacht Vitruvius Yachts also announced a number of exciting new collaborative projects for design concepts, and is undertaking its first land-based project. A yacht club based in Hong Kong. As a new addition to the Vitruvius Yachts portfolio, the company was approached by investment company New World, which owns a yacht club in Hong Kong to realise their new facilities. rom a project management perspective, the main considerations when approaching an interior refit project are drawings and detailing, handover dates, requirements of other trades, access to the interior, materials and their lead times and future servicing needs. all of these considerations require a close working relationship with both the owner’s team and the shipyard. at the beginning of a project, drawings developed in-house by rQi’s team of draftsmen are issued which indicate the designer’s intent. a full package of drawings is produced including plans, elevations and detail drawings. During this process, further information is received from the interior designer and shipyard regarding their requirements for service installations, thereby creating a net space for the interior. The interior handover of a luxury yacht can often be allocated in stages, either by specific areas or decks. rQi apply great consideration to
achieving the timely completion of a yacht interior. initially a global schedule is produced and from this, micro-schedules are generated, all taking into account the requirements of the trades active in completing the project.
Essential Entry access to interior components is crucial to ensure that individual pieces can be transported onto the yacht. most of the materials and components used in an installation are of a bespoke nature. Therefore, timely ordering is essential as manufacture lead times can often be long. many of the services required for the operation of a luxury yacht are positioned behind the interior, and access for future servicing is essential. During the planning stage, consideration is made to enable access to such components by introducing removable panels and access hatches throughout the interior. ingenious methods are adopted to ensure that

installation does not have an adverse affect on the clean lines of the finished interior. rQi handles a total refit as they would a new build, with the only main difference being that the interior must be built in smaller pieces due to the closed hull obstructing direct access. for a total refit of a sailing yacht, a yard may even cut a hole in the deck to save time for all parties involved. During a partial refit, clients may opt to replace smaller parts of the interior, which was the case for the refit of my lone ranger. upon the owner’s request, rQi installed the new components over a 1.5 year period. measurements were taken at a french shipyard; components were produced in the netherlands and installed when the vessel was available. This meant the rQi team travelled to singapore, Cairns (australia) and different locations in europe to install the new parts.
An Exquisite Exception With the start of a refit project, there is always a new challenge ahead. often the yacht has a new owner who either wishes to improve on the existing interior or redevelop it to create a home away from home, tailor-made to his or her approach to life. according to rQi, as a general rule of thumb, the installation of a motor yacht

interior is more easily achievable than that of a sailing yacht due to the shape of the structure and space available for services. however the recent refit of the spectacular 50-metre malahne by pendennis shipyard (psy), in a project led by edmiston, was certainly an exception to the general rule. psy appointed rQi as the interior subcontractors for the refit of the malahne marking the second refit of this calibre for rQi. The previous such undertaking was the Blue Bird, which also saw rQi work alongside the owner’s representative, William Collier of gl Watson. according to mr Collier, the refit of the malahne required an intricate approach. “We focused on respecting her original design while making her compliant with current regulations and standards. This was a twofold challenge, relying on extensive knowledge and research on one hand and ingenuity on the other, to ensure the required changes fit harmoniously with the original design,” stated mr Collier.
Sophisticated Specification During the development stages of the malahne refit, the owner’s team paid enormous attention to detail, ensuring that the hull and superstructure replicated her former appearance when she was first launched. Consequently, the deck heights remained comparatively low and

The design brief given to designer Guy Oliver of Oliver Laws was in essence very simple –“produce a high quality interior that appears to date from the 1930’s having been in constant use since that time and cared for to the highest possible standard.”

achieving the required overhead heights was a challenge for all parties involved. Despite her outward appearance, the malahne has a sophisticated specification with air conditioning, entertainment and other electronic services incorporated into the interior requiring space. after about a year of major hull and superstructure refurbishment and replacement, the first survey of the yacht was conducted, acquiring precise measurements for the new interior. These measurements were checked against the net space drawings and the production of workshop drawings began. The design intent drawings were developed into the finished drawings. after some time and many discussions with the designer, production began on the manufacture and assembly of the interior into the prefabricated ‘mock up’. one of the greatest considerations with the malahne was weight and stability. True it its era, the beam of the yacht is relatively narrow. Due to the increased amount of technical equipment

and services on board, it was necessary to install a medium weight interior to the guest deck and a lightweight interior to the main and upper decks. lightweight composite materials were used as a base material to construct the interior. The marble and onyx slabs were mounted on a honeycomb backing and the thickness considerably reduced to achieve the weight criteria.
interior and a similar amount of complementing timber sorts used. There were also seven types of leather and fourteen stone varieties used in the eight bathrooms, saloon bar and dining room service cabinets. The result is an interior of the highest standard with meticulous attention to detail and quality. rQi was able to fabricate all the luxurious interior components of malahne within sixteen months.
Detailed Detailing
malahne is one of the most detailed, distinctive and beautiful motor yachts to be launched in recent decades, suitably reflective of an incredibly glamorous era of yachting. edmiston yacht management manages yacht operations and malahne is available for charter through edmiston.
The detailing of malahne’s interior was extensive and replicates that of the 1930’s. This included different metal finishes in every cabin. at one given time there were more than 2,000 inlays, each with an identification number engraved on the back that was documented before it was sent off for finishing. The installed interior was hand finished onboard, painted surfaces brushed and veneers french polished. Cabinets were inset throughout the interior with ornate brass strips, patinated or plated in various finishes to the request of the designer. in total, 24 different veneers were used throughout the

SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST WATCHING TV
Audio Visual
Trends for 2016 THE RATE Of PRODUCT INNOVATION IN THE WORlD Of CONSUMER ElECTRONICS IN GENERAl AND AUDIOVISUAl ENTERTAINMENT IN PARTICUlAR, CONTINUES TO MOVE AS fAST AS EVER. AT THIS yEAR’S Consumer Electronics Show, held as always in las Vegas at the start of the new year, there was plenty of new toys applicable to superyachts that caught the attention of visitors from luxperiencelab, the arm of living technology specialist VBH that combines art and technology to create onboard bespoke onboard experiences.
O
n the top of the list comes the new generation of TV screens, delivering better picture quality thanks to the introduction of High Dynamic Range (HDR) image enhancement. 2016 is the year that HDR goes mainstream, delivering greater contrast and a wider range of colours. This combined with the extra pixels of 4K, means pictures have greater colour intensity and depth, making the TV image a lot closer to reality and delivering this year’s best TV experience. Up until now the adoption of 4K TVs has been slow due to lack of content. Now however, the arrival of HDR has given added impetus to content producers and the likes of Amazon Prime and Netflix are rolling out shows over the coming year to take advantage of the combined technology.
Light it Up The onboard audio visual experience means much more than just watching TVs and movies. Thanks to increased interconnectivity between devices – the Internet of Things – 2016 will see continued progress in the integration of audio visual equipment into a much wider experience that encompasses almost every aspect of the on board environment. One example of this trend is the interest in media lighting. The light conditions in which viewers watch a screen makes a huge impact on the perceived quality of the picture. To avoid

tired eyes, bias lighting (light placed behind the screen so that it does not shine at the viewer or cause reflections on the screen) gives the best effect when no brighter than 10% of the brightest white on the screen. for those modern superyachts that have larger windows and are without fully enclosed cinemas, the problem of excess light has become more of an issue. However, integrators can now install systems whereby turning on the screen will automatically result in the blinds being lowered and the media lighting activated – creating the perfect viewing experience. In fact, lighting generally is becoming inseparable from audio visual entertainment as together they form part of the overall integrated on board experience. The interconnection of lighting and sound on board superyachts is well known from party decks and discos where the rhythm and intensity of the music can be translated into corresponding colour and movement via the yacht’s own lighting system. Now the use of light is moving on from simple entertainment to becoming more about lifestyle and well-being. By using the same control interfaces that control audio-visual functionality, users can design and select lighting schemes to match any mood or activity within the particular zone of the yacht in which they find themselves.
The Next Generation for the next generation of yachts, specialists in integrated lifestyle systems such as VBH are much less about ‘audio visual’ and more about ‘multi-sensory’ as the possibilities for personal control of what owners and guests can see and hear extends to every aspect of the onboard

Van Bergehenegouwen.indd 25
experience. This even includes the way in which luxury yachts can receive and assimilate information about everything ranging from destinations and weather to safety briefings and tonight’s dinner menu. luxperiencelab has been working on ways to enable guests and crew to view information from multiple sources in ways that makes it pleasurable as well as easily absorbed. Practical augmented reality using eyewear is just around the corner, but the demand for similar kinds of overlaid experiences is present. luxperiencelab is meeting this demand as it has designed an interactive information system for the owner of a yacht who is very proud of his engines. Glass panels have been installed on either side of the walkway through the engine room that not only allow visitors to view the engines in total safety, but also encourages them to project touch-activated displays on to the panels to call up information on the yacht’s systems and provide real-time operational data. By aligning themselves with a particular piece of equipment, a touch of the nearby panel will call up relevant information seemingly overlaid over the item. This approach can be translated all over the yacht to create an effect that is futuristic as well as practical.
Future Focus The near future undoubtedly holds the promise of even more advanced applications that blend reality with electronic enhancements, and which offer users of superyachts genuine lifestyle benefits alongside compelling entertainment. However, superyachts do face one particular challenge as the growth in demand for
streaming content versus standard broadcast entertainment, together with the new highdefinition image standards is far outpacing the ability of broadband services to deliver them wirelessly. 4K + HDR content can require 25 Mbps for a single programme, and the cost of that sort of bandwidth via satellite is expensive. Superyacht technology specialists are moving to bridge the gap with products such as the VBH Pulse Media Delivery Platform. This maximises the usage of available bandwidth in a number of ways. Streaming the content in multiple formats for different devices helps to reduce the demands on the available bandwidth, as does intelligently monitoring users’ viewing preferences and then pre-downloading content that may be of interest to them. Other innovations go a long way towards extracting the maximum value from the limited bandwidth available. These are exciting times for those working in what is being called ‘living technology’. The interconnectivity of all types of devices through the Internet of Things is starting to change the lives of everyone, and the superyacht environment with its inherent sophistication and complexity will benefit even more than most.

uerte’s owner had a clear design brief – a contemporary yet timeless yacht. This was achieved through an accurate combination of curved and clear lines for the exterior while the layout focused on large social areas inside and out. “From Germany to Holland and Italy, we all use the same suppliers and subcontractors, as well as equipment and electronics, so there is no secret: time, processes, organisation and corporate culture make the difference. This launch will set new standards in the Italian yacht-building sector, ”stated Edoardo Ratto, General Manger of Tankoa as Suerte left the floating dock for her first sea trial.
Exterior and Interior Design
Designed by Francesco Paszkowski, with interior spaces drawn by Margherita Casprini, the design is a balance between warm and modern using natural materials. Movement onboard is smooth through wide passages that enable the crew to perform their tasks without interfering with the privacy of guests. A large beach club is found at water level where one can board the yacht. Instead of a strictly watersports area, this space has been designed as a continuation of the main living areas, styled with warm features such as a large lounge area, bar and TV. A central staircase leads one up into the heart of the main salon above. The client’s request for natural materials is quite evident throughout the interior, with untreated woods, leather and stone creating vibrant textures and a calming effect. An innovative use of lighting enhances the various areas and the large living spaces create the impression that Suerte was designed with luxury yet comfortable family living in mind.

Exterior Details guests can board the yacht either from the swimming platform, by the gangway or the hydraulic royal ladder. when boarding from the platform, guests access the interior by walking through the magnificent beach club which is equipped with a saloon, large TV screen, bar, shower, massage room, sauna and hammam, both with direct access to the sea through their fold-out terraces. The beach club is furnished in washed teak panels, while the back wall is entirely made of slate. in the centreof the wall, a staircase leads directly to the main deck and accompanying reception area. from the gangway, guests are welcomed by an oversized lounge where approximately 20 people can relax on the aft deck sofas. Via the side royal ladder, guests will find an even wider space and a massive glass door allowing access to the main lobby, the interior stairwell and the main elevator. The upper deck is equipped, in its aft section protected by the overhang of the sun deck, with a 16-person dining table, a lounge and two l-shaped sofas allowing perfect view to the sea. usual stainless

steel balconies have been replaced by tempered glass. The fore part of the upper deck is devoted to the owner’s private terrace with direct side access from his suite. The owner’s terrace features a 6-metre sofa with a integral refrigerator and a four person Jacuzzi surrounded by sunbeds. due to its positioning, this terrace offers total privacy to the owner.
Socialising in the Sun The sun deck, aft of the top deck, is another great social area with a touch-and-go helipad, large enough for a twin turbine helicopter to bring guests onboard. at night, the heli-deck becomes a dance floor with lights, speakers and a dJ station. further to the front, two sunbeds allow guests to dry up in the sun after using the 5-metre swimming pool. The pooltfeatures builtin bar chairs to enjoy drinks at the bar at the end of the pool. The centre aft portion of the deck is a panoramic salon with a giant flat screen TV, fireplace and baby grand piano. The ceiling here, is a masterpiece with glass skylights installed in the bottom of the swimming pool.
This gives a truly fresh atmosphere to the sofa zone with natural light flowing through the water.
Silence and Environmental Consciousness suerte is not only an extremely comfortable yacht to cruise on-board, thanks to her volume of 1,467 tonnes, but also very quiet, due to her up-to-date sound and vibration insulation devices and technologies. instead of aluminium. This reduces the propagation of vibrations when the vessel suddenly decelerates when running in big swells. All of the floors, bulkheads and ceilings are floating, thus eliminating any unwanted noise. Both engines have dry stack exhausts equipped with carbon filters to limit emissions, satisfying the RINA Green Plus Platinum annotation certificate. Generators are equipped with pressurised exhaust mufflers, mixing exhaust gas with water to reduce noise when at anchor or in a marina, as well as soot burners to avoid the black stain that is visible on the sides of most yachts running under generators.
Tried and Tested Initial sea trials were a success. “Achieving such a perfect balance for a first launch happens once every 40 new launches. I am truly and sincerely emotional about it because this is our first yacht as Tankoa. Despite our impressive technical office, the highest level of professionalism of our engineers and our background in yacht building there are always some unforeseen factors that can affect balance at the time of first launching,” stated Mr Ratto. According to the contractual specification, the top speed was to be 16.5 knots at half load. Like any other builder, Suerte performances are to be obtained by calm sea with wind of

5 knots. Initial sea trials always require a lot of organisation and incidentally, the date chosen meant Suerte had to face a solid 2 - 2.5 metre swell with wind gusts from 18 up to 35 knots. But Tankoa, in agreement with the crew, decided to go ahead with the trials and rightfully so. During the 7 to 8 hour sea trial, Suerte reached top speeds in excess of 18 knots with a load close to 70%.
Technical Achievement For Michel Karsenti owner of yachting consultancy agency Yacht-Ology, this was not just another launch. “This launch was very emotional for all of us. The entire design phase, conducted with Francesco Paszkowski, was aimed at creating a modern yacht that would still look very good ten years down the road. From colour renderings to the yacht being assembled in the shed, it is always difficult to get a true feel of what the effect will be once in the water. Seeing her sitting perfectly in her lines gave all of us the feel of a well-achieved teamwork. Getting to such level of technical achievement with a first yacht is the living proof that an Italian yacht builder, when investing wisely, can compete with the world’s best shipyard.”

A
s a leading manufacturer of marine audio systems, jL audio has a dedicated manufacturing facility in Florida. its knowledge of the marine environment allows designers to create an onboard audio system with phenomenal sound quality. whilst many music enthusiasts appreciate great sound, they don’t always understand the science behind it. there is a big difference between the acoustics in marine audio and home or car audio, as there will be high frequency cancellation due to the abundance of environmental noises such as wind, waves and engines, jL audio voice all of its marine speakers more aggressively than they do a car or home entertainment speaker. this allows the speaker to perform as if there were no noise obstacles to deal with, providing crystal clear sound and depth of clarity.
Custom Design Specifications for superyachts and their tenders are increasingly going beyond the realms of what was traditionally required by owners. jL audio’s european distributor, jL audio uK works closely with many leading boat builders and superyacht
tender manufacturers to supply and install custom designed audio systems according to customer requirements. Superyacht and superyacht tender manufacturers such as wahoo, pascoe international and glider now exclusively fit jL audio marine systems on their custom and production built crafts. a recent installation on one of wahoo’s custom built, 10-metre superyacht tenders required jL audio to design and fit an audio system that would offer the best possible sound under any conditions. the brief for Sunrays audio requirements articulated the increasing trend for higher spec audio on board perfectly and nowhere is this demonstrated better than from the speakers fitted to the stern specifically for water skiers and wakeboarders. designed
to project far enough for someone riding the wave to hear and enjoy, the stern speakers produced sound across the water that was as amazing as that on board.
Tuning Tradition jL audio believes that the tuning and installation process is equally important to the end result. tuning is vital to adding total value to the service. “it’s not just a case of dropping amps and speakers into the boat and hoping for the best,” comments jL audio uK’s managing director, paul baker. “great audio is a result of years of experience on how to tune systems correctly and as far as we are concerned, an installation is not complete until this has been done.” jL audio’s technical team also offers full training to builders to help with future installations and achieve the very best performance for its customers.
with an extensive product development programme, jL audio’s range of products and product quality is constantly improving and growing. offering a huge range of specially engineered speakers, amplifiers and subwoofers, their latest product innovation includes new bluetooth technology, which allows boat owners to effortlessly stream their favourite music without the use of a source unit. at its recent annual sales conference in Las vegas, jL audio announced the launch of the mediamaster mm100s source unit, a full-featured marine audio source unit that has been purpose-built for the marine environment. it is a first for jL audio into this important product category and allows them to offer customers a complete marine sound system, from source unit to amplifiers, speakers and subwoofers. the mm100s highlights a milestone for jL audio who maintain the belief that great audio is all about creating the best experience regardless whether it is in a home, car or on board a boat.
i. www.jlaudiomarine.eu
The source functionality of the MM100s offers a wide range of connectivity options for external devices such as an NMEA 2K-compliant CAN bus is also featured allowing connection to compatible marine electronics; Bluetooth audio streaming with AptX CODEC and full control of play/pause and track up/down functions. It has a USB connection for an iPhone or USB storage device.

Arcadia Yachts’ shadow boat Sherpa, the latest vessel from the Naplesbased environmentally focused shipyard, is an eco-friendly 16.8-metre yacht with an exceptional 5.50-metre beam. The Sherpa boasts a compact size with all the key features of larger yachts in the same range: exterior/interior spaces, a high-performance and efficient hull, and well-lit, modern interiors. She is the ideal chase boat or superyacht support vessel, carrying a huge
number of toys under her expansive aft deck. Best of all, thanks to her solar panels and fuel-efficient hull, the Arcadia Sherpa proves superyacht shadow boats can be as environmentally friendly as their ecotrendsetter yacht motherships. Sherpa was officially on display for her world debut during the 2016 boot Düsseldorf.

Cantiere Navale Italia’s (CNI) luxury tender Kifaru Baby premiered in 2015. The completely aluminum 13-metre class vessel stands out for its aesthetic, technological and functional features. Baby boasts sporting lines and construction specifications worthy of a superyacht. The internal and external lines of Baby coupled with the design of her hull were coordinated by the famous international yacht designer Luca
Dini. “A fighter plane without wings” was how Mr Dini described her. “Designed for expert owners who can readily recognise quality, technical innovation and refined styling, and who are looking for a compact yacht or an exclusive luxury tender. She is a small superyacht, sporty and of high performance, while at the same time lightweight and efficient.”

A Superyacht-worthy Finish the project was a comprehensive conversion of a 54-metre damen sea Axe vessel. changes such as the construction and fitting of a submarine garage, reconfiguration of the deck and the installation of Quantum stabilisers were realised. in addition, a new paint job was undertaken to give the vessel a superyachtworthy finish. the vessel also underwent lengthening with a new transom platform housing a stern anchor. the transformation included the removal of 60 seats and the installation of three new guest cabins, a captain’s cabin and an office on the main deck. the lower crew area and galley were further upgraded with the addition of a fit-for-purpose cool room.

Director Lars Bjorklund. “This is an absolute credit to the yard and all involved, given the wide ranging and very specific compliance requirements entailed in a refit to this scale. This is yet another refit managed by Diverse Projects that speaks to our ethos of precision scope delivery and outcomes.” Diverse Projects looks after the interests of yachts throughout their entire life cycle from new build to crew, refit management to provisioning, charter and shoreside support. The team at Diverse was pleased to bring the project to New Zealand, where work was carried out in Whangarei by Oceania Marine. The addition of a custom-made submarine garage rounds out the vessel’s ability to provide comprehensive explorer services to the mothership. The submarine garage was created whole offsite, and lifted and installed on the yacht in under ten days.
The crew areas and galley were stripped, reconfigured and upgraded, while the main deck underwent a full Bolidt application resulting in a vessel with a dramatically different appearance to the one which entered the yard when the refit began four months preciously. The Advantage left New Zealand to join the mothership in Tahiti after the final addition of a Heila crane, further testing of the stabilizers and classification testing.

Demonstrating superior technical, aesthetic anD functional elements, Benetti’s 11∙11 is a fine example of superyacht design and performance. the high calibre design of this luxurious 63-metre motor yacht is characterised by her elegant lines and distinctive vertical axe bow – the second ever plumb-bow yacht designed by Benetti’s naval architects – which avoids the upward push of the waves, cutting through the water for a stable ride. this is further enhanced by the distinct shape and wide beam of her hull, which also has the advantage of increased living and storage space aboard. significantly redeveloped from her original concept in just ten months, this full displacement superyacht has four decks contained in her steel hull and aluminum superstructure and can accommodate up to 12 guests and 16 crew. two cat 3512c engines recording a top speed of 17.5 knots – exceeding the contractual speed by 1.5 knots – and a cruising range of 5,000 nautical miles power the vessel. the two nickel-aluminiumbronze Detra propellers are designed for high efficiency and low-pressure transmission to the hull.
Gorgeous Glow in addition to the axe bow, Benetti has created further elements that ensure an

environment linked as closely as possible to the sea. this is evident in the absence of bulwarks and the integration of full-height portrait windows on the main deck, as well as the enormous 180° windows that enclose the upper and sun decks. the forward area of the main deck is completely unencumbered; the ship handling and docking areas are concealed and do not obstruct the view from the bridge or the master suite. together with the significant natural daylight illumination achieved through the continuous glass windows, striking nocturnal illumination effects are generated by 46 underwater lights along the waterline, creating a magical night-time glow.
Incredible Interior 11∙11 is the epitome of luxury superyacht design and this is particularly evident in the superior quality and high specification of her interiors, which provide all the comfort, functionality and innovation of a luxurious residential home. From the main living and entertaining spaces, to the spacious crew quarters and superbly-appointed galley, fine craftsmanship, exquisite finishes, and intricate attention to detail are at the heart of the interior. the generous and spacious living spaces both inside and out offer softness, comfort and functionality. the main salon is an impressive entertaining space with its custom-made u-shape sofa, 12-seater formal dining table and calming grey colour palette, while the sky lounge on the upper deck offers a more informal lounge environment complete with a cocktail bar and generous seating.

FOCUS ON ITALY
Made in Italy Nautica italiaNa, aN associatioN affiliated with foNdazioNe altagamma, was fouNded iN september 2015 by 25 leading italian nautical manufacturers. this association has a focus on strategic projects intended to create the foundation for the international revitalisation of the italian nautical industry and has experienced rapid growth in its initial months.
T
o achieve its goals, the association drew up ‘Nautica 365’ – a 360° strategic project for 365 days of the year based on three main pillars: the ‘Nautica italiana manifesto’ with nine concrete legislative proposals to support industry growth; the ‘ethical contract’ to ensure professionalism and transparency, and a national and international promotional plan with a new nautical events strategy.
Rapid Growth in just three months, the member numbers grew from the initial 25 to 50 members. the significant growth and upcoming developments were the main focus during the first general meeting held in Viareggio, italy. following a discussion with local players and a visit by

members to the Benetti and Perini Navi shipyards, the general meeting reviewed the intensive efforts by Nautica italiana in terms of both its expansion of industry representation and the preparation of the new guidelines for ‘Nautica 365’. “we are currently reviewing a number of applications and we are proud to welcome six new brands that have chosen Nautica italiana. the constant interest from various parties in our efforts confirms the need for new stimuli and new activities for the industry. i am particularly pleased to be able to state that after a quarter of intense work following the launch of the association, we can now look forward to a future with an equal wealth of initiatives, proposals and collaborative work,” commented lamberto tacoli, chairman of Nautica italiana. the admission of the new members also represents further progress in terms of the total turnover represented, which has thus climbed to euR 1.337 billion, more than 60% of the total nautical production turnover, and well over 80% of italian shipyard turnover

reative-thinking and innovative solutions along with a unique level of professional service and integrity are at the core of Fraser Yachts’ methodology. And the results speak for themselves as Fraser Yachts consistently sells more yachts annually since 2010 than any brokerage firm globally. According to European Commercial Director Vassilis Fotilas, “We are unmatched in terms of results, locations, nationalities and languages spoken within the company.”
Global Coverage Vassilis Fotilas, European Commercial Director
Fraser Yachts is one of the world’s largest yacht brokerage firms offering sales and purchase, charter, charter management, operational management, new build supervision and crew placement. With offices in all the major yachting capitals of the world, Fraser Yachts continues to grow by targeting development in new markets with new offices in Sydney and Singapore. “There are always new areas in development due to technological advances or new geographical regions we expand in. Our goal is to lead this change and development and continue to provide our customers with a top class, professional service,” says Mr Fotilas.
Future Focus “The new build market is doing significantly better, particularly amongst pedigree shipyards.
We have also seen two very strong years in charter as well as a steady stream of second hand yacht sales,” states Mr Fotilas. “Furthermore, refits have proved to be a steady source of work for many shipyards and project management companies and vary in size, duration and complexity. Our own project management team continues to be involved in several major refits throughout the globe.” Fraser Yachts recently announced the sale of a new construction 74-metre Amels. The yacht is the second hull of the Amels 242 Limited Edition range and is scheduled for delivery in spring 2017. Antoine Larricq of Fraser Yachts Monaco represented the buyer in the purchase of the project. A long-standing repeat client, this will be the fourth new build project that Antoine Larricq has overseen on behalf of the buyer and his ninth new build project sold in recent years. Tim Heywood is designing the sleek and elegant lines of the exterior, while Andrew Winch designs the interior, working very closely with the owner to fulfill his personal vision. The yacht will be used for world cruising and features an elongated aft deck, thus creating superior exterior luxury spaces with a light and airy volume. VF Yachts, the in-house project management division of Fraser Yachts, will undertake the project management of the vessel.

When asked how and why the owner decided to sign a contract with Amels, Antoine Larricq explained “We initially visited the Amels 212 Z during the 2014 Monaco Yacht Show. Thereafter we explored all possibilities of potential projects under construction. This took us worldwide, travelling as far as the Antipodes and China and finally extended to the study of a full custom solution. With the client’s brief uppermost, it gradually became clear that the Amels shipyard ticked all the boxes. Some examples include: building quality, reputation and design pedigree, spa area, helicopter capability, owner’s deck layout and delivery date within 18 months. The owner’s team, Fraser Yachts Management and Amels have enjoyed a fruitful collaboration leading to the recent signature of this build contract.” Fraser Yachts has a long standing history of collaboration with Amels including the construction of 46-metre Maupiti in 1993, 50-metre Kermit in 2001, 52-metre Lady in Blue in 2004 (recently sold by Fraser Yachts for the second time), and 65-metre Imagine in 2011 (for sale and charter with Fraser Yachts).
From Charter to Crew With access to virtually every top quality charter vessel worldwide, Fraser Yachts’ expert brokers strive to find the perfect yacht for each client.
From the yacht owner’s perspective, chartering is an opportunity to generate revenue that will offset some of the running costs of a yacht. The experienced charter managers handle a fleet of over 80 yachts ensuring the yachts are managed and marketed efficiently, maximising the charter potential. There has recently been an enormous increase in the size and complexity of private yachts. Owning and maintaining a luxury yacht has become a serious business requiring highly skilled experts to understand the rapidly changing technical, administrative and regulatory standards. With a database of over database of over 45,000 crew, the team of recruitment consultants in Fraser Yachts’ sister company,
the Crew Network, is well-versed in finding skilled crew to operate to the highest standards. As with every year, this year Fraser Yachts will take part in the most high-profile yachting events around the world, from established yacht shows like Monaco and Fort Lauderdale to new and upcoming shows targeting new markets like the Singapore Yacht Show. This strong presence helps ensure Fraser Yachts reach the right potential buyers and charterers.

FOCUS ON ITALY
The Rewards of Value The sTory of opacmare, a company founded in 1995 in rivalTa di Torino, iTaly To produce yachT and superyachT components, is full of adventures and surprises, as its recent past demonstrates. But how exactly did this company manage to achieve a happy ending in times of crisis?
T
oday, thanks to huge sacrifices in recent years and a series of specific investments, opacmare can consider recent difficulties a closed chapter. “compared with a few years ago, the situation of our company has improved remarkably and changed radically. in the recent past we have had to face many

difficulties of various kinds: i prefer not to go as far to say we managed to win the war, but i can certainly say that we have won the most important battles. after a difficult and complex period we are finally beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel,” states opacmare’s owner roberto sacco.

Roberto Sacco, Opacmare’s owner
mr sacco’s satisfaction is clear as he underlines that one of opacmare’s greatest accomplishments is managing to continue to work well, even in times of great difficulty. “We have always tried to carry on without betraying our original production philosophy, based on the desire to offer the yachting market solutions, systems and products with a high degree of innovation while anticipating the needs and demands of our customers. The purchase of new machinery has also made us more autonomous in production terms, and this has certainly been another element in our favour,” comments mr sacco.
Centralised Success after initial prosperous years when opacmare enjoyed fast and exponential growth both nationally and internationally, the crisis that hit the yachting sector in 2012 was felt. “compared with the ‘boom years’ when we had endless growth that led us to have offices and partners almost everywhere in the world, i can certainly say that at the moment we are in a more relaxed phase. from a company organization perspective, two things are going well; we are more centralised and we have acquired a much greater ability to manage and solve problems than before.” mr sacco explains. The determination of the sacco family, and with them all the company’s staff, (from the directors to the craftsmen) did the rest. The company experienced a significant resizing going from a medium-small company with about 200 staff
Handles and Leading Products The new sliding door handle, patented in 2014 (the last patent registered for handle dates back to 1914), has already sold an impressive amount less than a year after it was launched. produced to meet a specific request of one of opacmare’s main customers, this handle has a revolutionary feature as it can be opened in three different places.

compared to 400 before the crisis as well as just one operational site.
From Project to Product Between the conception of a product and its launch, there is a period of time which even for simple components is never less than six to eight months. This period can also be distinctly longer for highly technical products. once a project is defined, mathematical calculations and 2d models are submitted to the customer. Taking any modifications into account, the design of the 3d physical model begins which is then inserted into the 3d model of the boat. once it is verified that the opacmare 3d model meets the needs of the customer, the component can be sent to production. This means making the moulds if the components are fibreglass or starting the phases of cutting and bending. Then the first prototype is assembled and sent to the customer. if housings are involved, opacmare request a ‘piece of boat’ into which components are inserted for testing. usually the finished product is reached after a minimum of three components have been produced and tested without problems.
Successful Investments success rarely comes without hard work as opacmare has also experienced. “The market seems to have rewarded our consistency and our production methods which have always been based on great efforts and huge investments aimed at finding and perfecting truly innovative solutions that can both anticipate the requirements of the sector and bring concrete improvements to the daily lives of boat owners. We never stopped investing, spending large sums (almost eur 2 million a year) to support our internal research and development department. This team is made up of 20 engineers plus a team of a dozen people test prototypes and special components to see how well they work and improve them if necessary. These tests are carried out not just on new products and solutions but also on products already in the catalogue so as to renew them if necessary, or update them so that they are always extremely efficient.” says sacco. all this is part of a general renewal that for some years has driven the actions and the mission of the company. “We have tried to improve in all ways, from management control to holding down internal costs, and staff productivity. To shorten production times we have completely renewed all our operational software in our offices and we

have made big investments in purchasing latest generation laser machinery.”
Servicing the Customer opacmare’s care in the design and manufacturing phases of the finished product also extends to their customer support. “in our factory we have a school that is open all year round where. each month we hold one-week courses for a maximum of ten to twelve people. The lessons are open to our customers and dealers and to the staff of the boat yards we work with. This training is very much appreciated, especially by our foreign dealers and yards located far away (where perhaps opacmare does not even have a local dealer). during these courses, participants can learn to install manage and repair all the components in our catalogue” explains mr sacco. furthermore, all spare parts have been inserted in a virtual

catalogue on the internet, which is updated in real time. To view it, service centres simply request a password. in this way the printed catalogue has been eliminated and service operations have been streamlined should any products suffer a breakdown or fault. a captain can simply request the access password (which remains active for 6/8 hours), finds the component needed in the catalogue and sends its code to opacmare’s nearest service centre, making replacement and repair operations faster.

results confirm his words: opacmare is not only continuing to introduce new products to the market but is doing it in an increasingly convincing way.

This crisis almost seems to have done us good, it forced us to fully reorganize the company, to eliminate the problems of a fragmented production system and has made us aware of the need to optimise the work both of internal resources and of the entire company.” The

moguls; but a 1980s refit stripped her of both her style and her dignity.
