Designed, Sealed, Delivered In thIs Issue of superyacht Industry we had the please of delvIng Into the world of naval archItecture and desIgn InterIor/exterIor. thIs not only allowed us to get exclusIve behInd the scenes insight from some of the most prominent designers in the industry but also to learn more about the design approach, challenges and the fine balance between inspiration and regulation. espen oenio, philippe briand, alex pirard, alfred Karram Jr, and the team at glider yachts all took a break from the drawing board to share their creative processes and visions for the future. fresh off the world superyacht awards as we go to print, this home-grown issue of superyacht Industry also focuses on the forces to be reckoned with within the netherlands. dutch superyacht builders were recognised for both motor and sailing yachts at the prestigious awards ceremony in florence. some of the winners included the feadship savannah, the vitters sloop unfurled, claasen shipyards’ atalante, Mulder shipyards’ solis, heesen yachts’ sibelle, holland Jachtbouw’s topaz and another feadship, the symphony, all of which highlight the industry-leading position of dutch yards. according to the hIswa yachting group, the dutch are making a clear mark in the industry with members receiving orders for another 24 superyachts last year, with an average length of 56m, an increase of 26.3% on the 2014 figures. the forecast for 2016 is 25 deliveries with a total length of 1,425m. 20 dutch superyachts reached the finalist stage of the annual world superyacht awards ceremony, including projects by amels, balk shipyard, oceanco and van der valk. It therefore feels more than fitting that this issue focuses on dutch yards as we take a look at seven recent deliveries, collaborations and award winners in editors picks, an in-depth look into luxury submarine provider neyk submarine and an exclusive interview with oceanco. 90m Sailing Yacht Athena Offered for Sale by Burgess

In early May, Silver Lining was loaded onto a string of self- propelled dollies, pulled from the shipyard’s shed, and carefully moved the short distance from her birthplace to the launch ramp in Christensen’s protected five-acre lagoon, for a four-week term of river and sea trials. Joining Silver Lining at sea this summer will be Chasseur, a fully MCA- compliant 50m yacht that will be launched in June. Both yachts will be on display at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in November.

The largest sailing yacht currently on the market, Athena is now offered for sale by her original owner through Burgess. Commissioned by a knowledgeable and experienced yachtsman, this much admired 90m three-masted schooner combines the aesthetics of traditional design with modern technology, resulting in an extraordinary vessel of timeless appeal.Custom built by the world-class Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman and designed by the esteemed late Pieter Beelsnijder in association with the naval architecture talents of Gerard Dykstra & Partners, Athena carries an indisputable pedigree, representing the very highest calibre of Northern Europe shipbuilding.

Luigi Gianneschi Gianneschi Pumps and Blowers President Mr Gianneschi was widely respected across the marine industry for his friendly, diplomatic approach to business. At the end of the 1970s thanks to Mr Gianneschi‘s insight and professional ability the company took a significant change, going from repairing to production of nautical products: pumps, water pressure systems, electric fans, engine pumps, compressors and water heaters. Products created with selected materials, which are made to guarantee to last longer in any type of difficult environment such as marine. More recently he took another challenge investing in a new production facility – just completed in March 2016 – which will process stainless steel with particular focus on the production of stainless steel tanks and water heaters through the purchase of new automatic and semi-automatic machines such as laser cutting and welding. Mr Gianneschi was an active member of UCINA General Council for production of accessories and equipment sector and contributed a great deal to the improvement of marine industry.

NAVAL ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

Responding to Change The callinG card for inTernaTionally renowned naval archiTecT and desiGner esPen oeino is endless. superyacht industry speaks with Mr oeino who attributes experience, attention to detail and the enthusiasm and passion of his team as key factors to his success.

When did your interest yacht design begin? i was drawing boats, cars, buses and ski boots from an early age. The interest in design and in particular boat design was pretty much omnipresent early on. i guess i drew my first boat at the age of 2 or so. since then, i’ve pretty much been obsessed with boat design and naval architecture in general.

With yachts are getting bigger and bigger, do you anticipate a limit to just how big yachts will get? i am not sure the trend towards bigger and bigger yachts is sustainable and i think we better prepare ourselves for some changes in the years ahead. Personally, i believe we will see more and more of custom designed yachts of smaller sizes than what we have seen so far. recently the trend has been for the size of production boats to increase with semi production yachts of up to 60m being offered today. i think a parallel universe may develop with custom designed 15-20m boats being contracted and we would very much like to be part of that development.

What are the challenges of designing a SOLAS and/or PYC yacht? Combining aesthetics and safety requirements. There are numerous and constantly changing challenges. fire safety, escape routes and lifesaving appliances have been an integral part of the design process since i started in the business but the incorporation of the Mlc (Marine labor code) has put an added pressure on designers there is no doubt about that.

How does the design approach change depending on the country if at all? certainly designing a yacht for a Middle-eastern owner is different from designing for a north american or scandinavian client. for us, it is essential to read up and learn about the culture of the people we will be working with. we have designed yachts for american, european, russian and Middle-eastern customers and we have just started designing some projects for chinese clients. They all have different priorities, so it is a learning process. They expect the designer to know their culture. especially in terms of the functionality and use of the different onboard spaces. you almost have to live with them in their day-to-day environment in order to fully understand their tastes and needs. having spent the majority of my time abroad being faced with new and different cultures and languages has certainly allowed me to better develop this aspect of my personality and professionalism.

Why do you think that most yachts do not break away from the traditional layout principles? Probably because it works and represents a certain logic. however, it does not mean the layouts cannot or will not evolve. in most areas of design, the clients tend to be more conservative than the designers so there tends to be a certain resistance to change.

What are the biggest challenges that you currently face within the sector?

What current trends are you seeing within the sector? Where do you see this going in the future?

There is a tendency for the larger yachts to become more complex and to incorporate more features both architecturally and technically. first of all, the regulatory environment and the rules and regulations to which we have to design and to which the

due to the remarkable increase in size, nowadays many living spaces of modern mega yachts are getting farther away from the water. one of the current trends is to develop new areas to create a link with the water surface, like beach clubs or big stern

yards have to build the yachts (see previous question). sometimes it can be overwhelming!

NAVAL ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

The largest yacht in the history of Heesen Yachts formerly known as Project Kometa, the 70m superyacht has been christened Galactica Super Nova. This is the biggest superyacht built by the Dutch shipyard to date with the design drawn by Espen Oeino combined in one incredible project.

platforms. also positioning tenders inside the boat with the opening towards the stern or to the side was previously unthinkable and today is considered normal. But design is like fashion, trends and styles come and go in cycles. for example, the vertical bows that look like a new trend nowadays were totally normal over one hundred years ago, right up to world war ii.

How do you keep up-to-date with changing rules and regulations within the superyacht sector? Does it ever feel limiting?

Skat is a 70.70m custom built motor yacht by LĂźrssen Yachts. Skat has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure with a beam of 13.50m and a 3.75m draft. This custom displacement yacht is equipped with an ultra-modern stabilsation system which reduces roll motion effect and results in a smoother more enjoyable cruising experience.

we are constantly faced with new and updated rules and regulations and the environment in which we operate is for sure getting more and more complex and litigious. does it feel limiting? definitely, as it can be difficult at times to find the logic in certain rules and regulations.

The 2013-built superyacht Solandge was launched from the LĂźrssen Shipyard in Germany to world acclaim. At 85.1m she is among the largest and most luxurious charter yachts on the market, conceived by industry-leading designers and highly experienced owners.

Rigging and Sail Handling System Sybaris is equipped with carbon fibre spars and carbo-link rigging provided by rondal. She will feature a comprehensive rig load monitoring System that, through a series of strain gauges, constantly detects the loads acting on the rig components. the north Sail 3dl wardrobe includes: reacher 1,070m2, jib 635m2, main 770m2 and mizzen 570m2. for Sail handling control, the impressive

Sailing System features the newest generation of Perini navi captive winches and furlers. electric variable speed motors and furlers, duly synchronised and monitored by the Perini navi automated Sail handling System, dramatically improve furling and deploy times while speeding the tacking and jibing. the reacher/blade winches pull a maximum load of 35t and have a maximum line speed of 75m/min. the reacher/blade furlers have a line speed of 75m/min.

Variable Speed and DC Bus Electrical Generation System two variable Speed generators supply electrical power via a dc bus to the vessel’s main electrical grid with the potential to store excess power in class-approved lithium polymer batteries, which is a first aboard a Perini navi sailing yacht. the advantage of Silent running modes together with Peak and trough Shaving during generator operations allows for efficiency as well as reduced emissions. the class-approved lithium polymer batteries located in the vessel bilges – in an

easily accessible location for maintenance and replacement – provide a total power of 136 kw/h with a recharge time of less than one hour. furthermore, power distribution via a dc bus allows for renewable energy sources or increased battery capacity to be added as additional generating capacity at a later date.

Noise and Vibration Reduction Perini navi has continuously developed its machinery and accommodation installation techniques to minimise noise and vibration levels. one of the most significant contributions to the exemplary results is achieved by the adoption of double mounted engine-gearbox sets. each engine-gearbox set is elastically mounted to a high mass vibration damping cradle which is then elastically mounted to the hull structure as a whole set. the results as recorded on board the first 60m ketch Seahawk, include an average of 45db noise level in the owner suite when running at 12 knots.

Accommodations the amazing main deck of Sybaris features a vast 30m long guest area (from the aft cockpit to the wheelhouse), with a 4m wide sliding door

allowing easy communication from the spacious cockpit to the main saloon. Structural pillars do not interrupt the panoramic view from the majestic main saloon and the newly designed windows allow uninterrupted views of the sea, and prodigious quantities of natural light on board. the 18m long flying bridge provides outdoor area for guests.

Interior Insight uS based Ph design was chosen to design and execute the interior. each piece of furniture is custom-designed and the overall concept epitomises the luxurious contemporary allure of Sybaris. the designers’ use of high quality materials including titanium both structurally and artistically concurs, to create the unique style of this yacht. according to Peter hawrylewicz, founder of Ph design, “we wanted to create an interior that would be perceived as special and original in the yachting world. for example, we decided that the boat should have titanium ceilings to softly bounce the light and to compliment the muted tones of the american ash millwork.” the titanium is picked up in other areas of the boat including the doors and the custom

as people become increasingly proactive about how they live their lives ashore with regards to environmental consciousness, that same consciousness translates to how they choose to live their lives at sea. designers, engineers, and builders will cater to smart yachting, incorporating that consciousness into the lifestyle aboard. “We are committed to improving the efficiency of all of our onboard systems and do all we can to minimise the environmental impact of our superyachts. We have a dedicated r&d engineering department whose role it is to specifically research ‘green’ technologies and their feasibility. to that end, we are continually upgrading and revising the way we outfit our yachts vis a vis insulation, overall energy consumption and energy reduction. We also avoid unnecessary waste by installing systems to minimise it,” states mr onkenhout.

oceanco made the deciSion to SpecialiSe in yachtS for a very particular type of owner. the y700 coded yachts – alfa nero 82m, Seven Seas 86m and equanimity 91.5m to name a few – were deliberately designed to be the ultimate in sophistication – technically, mechanically and aesthetically. 50% of the yachts oceanco have built appear in the ‘top 100 worldwide largest yachts’ list and with each new launch this number grows.

O

ur clients have the confidence of seeing some of the world’s most accomplished yachts built on time, on budget and to exceptional standards. We embrace market trends but never let them constrain our innovation. We listen carefully to what our clients wish to achieve. Without preconceived ideas, our naval architects and project managers question everything to ensure that we fully understand every detail,” says ceo marcel onkenhout.

oceanco’s hull designs are optimised to minimise fuel consumption in wide-ranging operating conditions. furthermore, the sub systems installed are also designed to enhance energy efficiency. “We are not alone in our efforts to create ‘greener yachts’; all of our clients have a consciousness about the health and well-being of the planet that we all share. Building eco-friendly yachts will become the norm in the coming years. it is of vital importance to build a product that is optimised for low energy consumption, low emissions, and overall environmental impact. it is the future of yachting,” according to mr onkenhout. the use of led lights and green hotel energy are a few examples of environmental measures. the single most power-hungry system aboard a megayacht is the drive train; hence it is also one of the principle areas of oceanco’s research. energy storage and what is known as ‘peak shaving’ are other focus areas, as well as engine waste energy recovery into heat. Solar energy and new paint products along with multi-layered window glass to reduce the heat from the sun inside the yacht and thus reduce the airconditioning, are further examples.

The green approach also translates to Oceanco’s clients’ requirement to get closer to the elements, to the sea, in all possible ways. All windows, when possible, must be full height and folding balconies provide panoramic sea views. Mr Onkenhout has also noticed that clients want to have direct, easy and enjoyable access to the water, i.e. large garage doors aft that open flat and that serve as beach club areas; water sport rooms with diving equipment and drying cabinets for wetsuits with direct access to jet skis, toys and the sea.

Track Record In 2007, Oceanco delivered Alfa Nero. This exceptionally innovative yacht (pool that converts into helipad) with its distinctive and elegant lines has won seven awards. Since then, Oceanco has delivered nine large and distinctive yachts, all with innovative features. In 2010, Oceanco received an order to design and build a superyacht suitable for up to 26 guests under both private and commercial operation. This order resulted in the construction of the very first PYC (Passenger Yacht Code) Dutch built yacht Equanimity, delivered to her Owners in spring 2014.

FOCUS ON THE NETHERLANDS Oceancos new purpose-built facility

Oceanco’s facility includes: • A temperature-controlled building shed that is 150m long, 32m wide and 33m high • Two overhead cranes with 2x 25-ton lifting capacity (total 100t) • 2,800m² of offices & 13,000m² of workshops • A paint facility of 1,600m2 for specialised painting work • Strict and separate climate control for each area including: the hall, the yachts and the workshops • Size of yard: 120,000 m2 • Size of yachts that can be build: up to 140m • Largest yacht built so far: 95m

Breaking New Ground On the outskirts of Rotterdam, lays Oceanco’s new purpose-built facility while the design, sales, marketing and administrative office is located in Monaco. Based on the site of a previous naval shipyard, which they took over in 1997, the yard has immediate access to deep water, with just four hours to the open sea and with no locks en-route. Oceanco have capitalised on this by converting the original sheds and a 130m quay, for building and fitting out customised superyachts up to 95m. The new purpose-built facility, will provide the flexibility to build 100m+ yachts. The building and dry dock are concrete with integrated thermal and cooling systems. Dedicated climate control systems also regulate temperature and humidity in the interior of the yachts and the spraying facility. Transport in and out of the building is through a controlled air lock or directly to areas that are inaccessible from the main assembly hall. There can be a uniform temperature throughout the hall or there is an option to isolate certain areas such as inside the yacht, so as to keep the humidity and temperature at an appropriate level for the yacht’s interior. Additionally the spraying facility has a consistent temperature commensurate with special paint requirements as the airflow velocity and air-volume refreshment rate in addition to temperature and proper humidity is

www.s u p e r y a c h t - i n dustr y.c om

crucial for a first class gloss finish. All climate systems, temperature, humidity and airflow, can be operated individually. To further enhance the area for paint and other tasks, there is a centralised vacuum system to keep the area dust free with water/gas/oxygen/ compressed systems and an isolated paint fumes extraction system. All of the systems in the shed have been designed to be extremely efficient and environmentally conscious utilising deep soil thermal heat/cooling exchange and river water for more cooling possibilities.

Are sailing yacht clients different from motor yacht clients?

perFormance with a distinct

i think there are too many clichés floating around, qualifying motor yacht owners as frivolous, and having floating gin palaces. to say that motor yacht owners are fundamentally different from sailing yacht owners, that again is a cliché. the motor yacht owners we know are first of all ‘sea lovers’. they use the yacht to go all over the world, to the very hot spots, such as portofino and saint tropez but those areas are just part of the bigger trips. For example, exuma went to the remote islands around Japan, the philippines, and papua. Grace e went on her first trip to spitsbergen, norway. Galileo G spent several weeks in the Galapagos and she cruised the coast of chile.

artistic Flair, phillipe briand designs for both sailing and motor yachts are renowned for their efficiency and elegance. superyacht industry speaks with the yacht designer who started his career at the age of sixteen.

motor yachts are chosen because they are easier to operate. big sailing yachts such as Vertigo (alloy 220’) are majestic, they also go around the world, but they are more complicated because of the sails. people investing in big sailing yachts are passionate about sailing and combine that passion with their desire to travel around the world. their passion compensates the reduced space on a sailing yacht. a sailing yacht of 75m is certainly very comfortable and provides ample space, but it does not have the number of decks a motor yacht has. they are more intimate. sailing yacht owners consider the crew as part of their living environment, as the crew is constantly on deck to handle the

yacht. while the crew on a motor yacht is largely invisible to the passengers, so the lifestyle on the ship is fundamentally different.

What current trends are you seeing? concerning onboard lifestyle, we need to design yachts with bigger and multiple annexes and toys, as most owners want easy access to a variety of maritime and shore based activities. the idea that heavier is better is an idea of the past. technically, we need to develop yachts with a long range, and with no pollution. we need to control consumption while providing flexible power generation. the yachts need to be completely quiet and free of vibration. all these elements go hand in hand.

You are currently working on projects with Feadship and other Northern-European yards; does the design approach ever change? the design approach does not change at all as the client drives the design, not the yard. the aim of both the yard and the designer is to build the best possible yacht for the owner. every yard has specific building methods and specific characteristics thus the owner choses a yard best matched with the style of yacht to be built.

Do you prefer a design brief or free range? the natural answer would be a free range, but that would mean i put my own priorities before those of the client, and that would be a big mistake. all clients have a brief, because before they come to see us they have long thought about their future yacht. as we start working and throughout the process, we bring our ideas forward and that is where we add value to the process.

And the layout of yachts? the layout is driven by several factors. the space allocation is driven by comfort at sea and at anchor, privacy, service, technicality, safety and regulations. so whatever you do those are the constraints. a yacht is not a house. one cannot create great open spaces over several decks as this would endanger the passengers in case of flooding or fire. one would like to see a totally transparent superstructure with no visual obstruction at all, but that would not be structurally sound! there are a number of yachts where the layout is quite different and extravagant, and that is fantastic for the whole industry as those yachts receive a lot of media attention. the reality however, is that a yacht is

MARINE PROPULSION & POWER GENERATION

Power Perspective

Power is vital in this day and age. on a suPeryacht Power is often in high demand and the choice of the right generator and engine is very important. superyacht industry takes a look at a few recent developments in marine propulsion and power generation.

Fischer Panda

variable sPeed generators for suPeryachts

fischer Panda has a wide range of iseries generators for superyachts with a varying electrical demand onboard. their generators cover an output range from 0 - 150 kva via an inverter with an exceptional constant output voltage and frequency stability of 400v/50hz or 240v/60hz. the variable speed technology takes advantage of modern diesel engines, which are designed to run at low speeds and meet all current emission standards. the speed of the diesel engine is adjusted according to the load; the inverter ensures the output voltage remains constant. the exhaust emissions and fuel consumption for most load profiles are up to 20% lower than with a traditional fixed speed generator of equivalent rating. fischer Panda iseries generators are suited for parallel or multiple operation and can be operated individually resulting in an individual and cost-saving energy supply.

Describe your design process.

The design process always begins with the initial client meeting where the concept idea is discussed. The most important features of the yacht are outlined such as the length, width, speed, classification, interior layout and exterior style, etc. subsequently a market analysis is conducted to examine existing yachts that fit the profile of the client. Through benchmarking we detect the strengths and weaknesses of this design and take this into account in the design strategy. after the analysis, the base frame of the yacht is drawn indicating the position of the hull, the deck and the engine. simultaneously a more emotional development process begins. The designer uses his imagination and draws on inspiration from other creative fields such as architecture, art, interior design, etc.

professional career Through a large variety of projects covering different disciplines: product design, interior design, automotive design and especially, yacht design. superyacht industry speaks with the designer about his design process, challenges and perspective on the future.

The next step consists of matching the profile and the plans for the deck with the concept in

such a way that the form and functionality are merged into one single proposal. The designer now has at his desk a schematic drawing of the proportions and style. This drawing, which is normally made with pencil, is transmitted by means of cad software to a computer. The sketches for the hull, deck and the engine room are created in 3d and this model is sent to the team of engineers which engages the development of the technical aspects of the project. once these points have been determined, the designer starts to work with the 3d model developed by the engineers and creates all the surfaces that shape the exterior design. They determine the composition of the deck and apply basic furniture in 3d. The 3d model allows us to develop the entire yacht on scale and to show our clients different design or configuration options.

as a conclusion to this process, we present a preliminary design which outlines the needs of the owner and the primary requirements for shipbuilding and legislation. although the reality is much more complicated, we can say that from this moment a dynamic between the client, engineer, designer and shipyard is created which defines the details of the project.

The streamlined and stylised design of the MY 170’ makes this a yacht sporty and high-performance features give this vessel a top speed of 40 knots.

What challenges are you faced in the process? for us, the biggest challenge during the design proces is articulating with the utmost precision three basic components: the needs of the owner, the engineers and the vision of the designer. one of the main challenges during the design process is to understand the ideas, expectations and vision of the owner. sometimes customers have a clear picture, but if not, it is the job of the designer to formulate the right questions so that the client’s vision can be expressed. There is also a challenge which we refer to as the emotional stage. Taking into account the requirements on an architectural and construction level, the designer begins a process of inspiration and gathering of ideas which proposes to give new answers to old

questions. Without a doubt, this phase involves the greatest freedom and passion allowing the designer to be inspired and to create. personally, i think the talent of a designer is not only determined by the ability to develop new ideas, but by the ability to shape these ideas through the cooperation with the engineers, legislation and within the product strategy and the relevant market.

What current trends are you seeing within your sector at the moment? new social trends, new technological developments, new needs; these changes generate new opportunities for the designer.

in addition, consumers feel more and more responsible for their purchasing decisions and look for environmentally sustainable products constructed under good working conditions. The new hybrid engines, the use of solar energy, the re-using of materials, or the use of alternative types of fibers insted of teak as coating material are good examples of this. We are also seeing an extension of the interior design. formerly, designs were created from outside in. over the last decade however, the interior has become increasingly important and currently exceeds the design of the exterior. We see the need for more natural light reflected in larger windows; the beach club has reconfigured the entire back deck, and foldable platforms used as balconies have been introduced into the master cabin. We also recognise the digitisation of navigational instruments. The major developments of tablets and mobile phones have given a big boost to the operation of navigation. information is much more visual and more direct. This makes it possible to carry out a lot of actions and to view data with different devices anywhere in the world. For fast transportation, the rudders and sail house can be removed in less than an hour.

Control Room The cockpit has been designed for a twoperson crew, with each pilot having a set of throttles, stick and rudder controls. The large panoramic viewports give each pilot excellent all-round visibility. Only essential controls have been provided, such as two joysticks, an animated, graphic touchscreen monitor, surface communications, underwater telephone, and compass and rudder indicators. It is also equipped with double-redundant mission control processors, two multi-functional colour displays for each pilot for day and night electro-optic system, electronic scanning sonar system and a multi-level system. To save time, and speed up the process of reconfiguration of the submarine for different dive modes, three master switches are available for diving, for bringing the submarine up to the surface and for starting the diesel engine. The control system incorporates modern forms of data processing and displays in its command centre. At the heart of the system is a central, powerful computer, which processes data received from external sensors, navigation aids and the data bank, and displays them on four high-resolution monitors. The software ensures that data is presented in real-time, upon the operator’s request. The operator can select individual images or it is also possible to select a number of images, such as the TV camera, the radar scan and the electronic sea chart simultaneously.

transponder and two vertical thrusters. The sail is made of radar absorbent material to ensure radar and visual stealth.

Electric Motor System The submarine is powered by diesel engines and two powerful electric motors suspended on either side of the submarine. When the engines run in opposite directions the underwater craft can turn on its axle within a few seconds. The engines are forward of the diving rudders which means the submarine can dive very fast. This configuration is ten times more effective than the conventional cruciform design.

Diving rudders A feature designed to satisfy the high manoeuvrability requirement is the spacious rudder surface and it’s turning radius. Within a few seconds the rudders can be adjusted to an angle of 35° via the easily controlled, single joystick which responds quickly to changes. The big air balloons in each diving rudder, can be inflated to bring the submarine to the surface and increase safety.

The Sail House The sail house integrates a completely novel design. The tower is as slender as possible, but provides maximum space for navigational equipment. Apart from the bridge and the short induction masts, there is a 2.4m diameter dome on top of the sail. This dome can be equipped with navigation lights, flashlights, two fixed searchlights, colour CCD cameras, night-vision equipment, an electro optic multi-functional periscope, a radar system, navigation system, pinger release and locating system, tracking

anish reflects the wishes and requirements of her owners to an exceptional degree and on this particular build, Feadship teamed up with eidsgaard design. “this launch party encapsulates the energy with which the owners have embarked on fashioning their Feadship,” explained Feadship director Jan-Bart Verkuyl. “they are excited about enjoying all the options involved in being close to the water, from the exquisite transom sea terrace to the inviting sun deck bar. Vanish has been designed to suit the way they like to spend time on board with a wide array of watersport options. With helipads on both the sun deck aft and bow area, she serves as a springboard to a world of adventures for the owners and their guests.”

An Unusual Treat the owners of Vanish were very involved in the project and had tremendous fun creating this timeless beauty. their appreciation for the perfect craftsmanship, carried out on their behalf, was made clear when they offered to give all the personnel of the yard and their partners the chance to take a comprehensive tour of the finished yacht. “it is very unusual for all the people from the myriad disciplines involved in a superyacht build to actually get to see how everything came together in the end,” adds mr Verkuyl. “Vanish is a showcase example of a holistic superyacht, and it is wonderful that everyone involved can experience the fruits of their collective labour in this way.” 3 6 | S Y I 2 0 1 6 | Volum e 11 | Issue 2

Smart engineering From the overall concept to the smallest detail, Vanish is designed and executed to achieve the most functional and aesthetically pleasing solutions. harmonious lines and the use of varnished teak, including cap rails with a diameter of more than 25cm, soften her modern and powerful exterior profile. the unusual transom was designed to provide intimate contact with the water while meeting the owner’s desire not to feel intimidated by the hull’s bulk when arriving by tender or swimming from the sea terrace. another example of fresh thinking is the full-height atrium with its free-standing staircase and breathtaking wall of glass, a unique feature on a 66m yacht. the balcony for the full-beam owner’s suite is also without precedence and is another hugely impressive engineering feature. a teak-covered platform slides out from under the starboard companionway using an innovative pull-out mechanism, locking in place with the floor level of the stateroom to give a seamless transition through glass sliding doors. in addition to the owner’s quarters, Vanish also has four guest suites and a large Vip stateroom on the main deck that can be converted into two guest suites. the seventeen crew members on hand ensure top service for everyone onboard.

NAVAL ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

Gliding into the Future Since itS inception eight yearS ago, glider yachtS have inveSted heavily in reSearch, deSign, analySiS and teSting. thiS haS made glider Something completely unique and unlike anything the luxury yacht industry has ever seen before. Superyacht industry speaks with managing director rob mccall about gliding into the future.

What are the key factors to Glider’s success? it is the technology that allows the unprecedented luxurious experience that we offer so from a design point of view, we feel that the investment in development will be a huge contributing factor to our success. From a business perspective, it really depends on customer’s spending habits but we firmly believe that once they see the

Glider Yachts.indd 38

very first glider they will appreciate its astonishing beauty. as with most iconic brands, which we very much see glider becoming, the purchase of a glider should be seen as an investment. it is not just a boat; it is a thing of beauty like a piece of art that will only increase in value over time. the early SS18, launched at the london on Water Show in may got hearts beating faster and we already have significant interest.

Glider is known for the use of influences and technologies stemming from Formula 1 and Aerospace, any further influences on the horizon? the influences behind glider’s design goes much further than the aeronautical concept. evolution has played a colossal role in its development. We looked at the fastest fish in the sea and correlated this with glider’s hull design, which is one of the major contributing factors to glider’s ability to offer a ride

that is smooth, fast and comfortable.

A recent press release stated that the Glider design team ‘tore up the rule book.’ Is this a reoccurring truth of Glider’s design approach and how is this put into practice? design is often limited by finances in most cases of yacht manufacture and efficiency is often the deciding factor. in our case, we are without boundaries when it comes to design

creativity and have no financial restraints so there was no limit to what we could achieve. Subsequently, conventional design has gone out the window allowing us to ignore any pricing model and design and build without compromise and with our main objective of perfection. We are very blessed to have a world-leading design team of aero and hydro dynamists, F1 and aerospace engineers and naval architects who collectively have centuries of wisdom and advanced expertise that helped us achieve something that will truly revolutionise the industry.

Why do most yachts not break away from traditional layout principles? We feel that most yachts are built to a price model, which puts constraints on design innovation. naval architecture really hasn’t changed much since victorian times when Britain was the undisputable maritime power following the industrial revolution. the strict approach to boatbuilding that was imposed during this time still very much exists. many British naval architects still apply the traditional and formal values of boatbuilding, which is very limiting. naval architecture has its origins in France and

interestingly it is French designers and builders that are currently breaking the mould and moving away from more conventional layouts. another

market trend that has led to the development of glider. We see this trend continuing in the future and we will respond by expanding the range to satisfy

Any promising trends that you would like to see developed further in the future? We have seen an astonishing growth in demand for more on board comfort in the superyacht sector, such as reduced motion. increasingly, people want to go further and faster so it is this

NAVAL ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

How did the cooperation with Benetti come about? i was privately retained by the owner of the vessel to create an innovative space for the interiors of the f125/01 vivace project. As an outside designer, my goal was to immediately form a fine collaboration with the Benetti design team. in my 30-year career, it has been my experience that in projects such as this one, it is paramount to form a trusted collaborative relationship to produce the ultimate results for the project. Benetti’s design team and organisation not only embraced my efforts, but constantly supported and enhanced them, resulting in an exceptional final interior design for this prototype.

Explain the design process for Iron Man. my client was impressed by the cutting edge and innovative modern design of an interior that i had created for a private residence at the st. regis Bal

harbour, florida. he wanted me to create a comparable design aesthetic for his yacht, so i began to use similar geometric and finishing elements that i had used in the residence to create the design platform, which then became the schematics for the yacht. my goal was to incorporate unique designs, materials, and techniques not common to the interiors of yacht design such as the use of multi-tiered soffit ceilings, oversized book matched slab granite flooring, and custom molded and bent glass details.

What were some challenges faced? i am known for using very oversized and grand scaled materials such at 1,400 pound walls (653kg) of 4 (10cm) thick fused and textured glass for walls, a detail that obviously could not work on a fast displacement yacht. so to accurately mimic that aesthetic, i researched

NAVAL ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

different types of glass finishes and textures that ultimately produced that same result.

How does yacht design differ from a hotel or residential project? my approach to creating a one-of-a-kind interior for a yacht and that of a residence is not very different at all. from my personal design perspective, the aesthetic goals that i strived for were all achievable, via slight changes in their implementation due to common issues that are customary in yacht design. stringent safety standards, the need for moisture resistant materials, constant structural movement and torque moments of the structure, and very tight space tolerances were all examples of matters that always had to be taken into consideration; yet none ever hindering my creative process.

How does one continue to create one-of-a-kind designs? never in my career have i ever replicated any of my design concepts – they are all one-of-a-kind creations. my inspiration always starts with understanding the soul of the client. i begin a very insightful and deep research process into exactly what the client is looking for in their own private living space to make their daily life experience a beautiful one. from that point forward, implementation of the design concepts becomes a very natural process via the use of my trademark design details and the use of forms and materials.

Will there be more yacht projects in the future? due to the overwhelming response to my designs in the yachting industry, i have opened a new branch within my firm. specialising in creating not only unique interiors, this branch will also collaborate with naval architects, engineers, and other consultants to have a hand in creating very distinctive forms for the hulls and superstructures for new concepts in super yachts.

engines for the marine industry. taking into account all common yacht variables such as wet dry exhaust, fuel quality, limited available back-pressure, certification rules and safety, Zenoro clean generator sets were developed. for more and more yacht applications, a hybrid system is nowadays in discussion to increase flexibility, performance, efficiency, and decrease the environmental footprint. Zenoro heavy-duty hybrid generator sets up to 750 ekw dc are available for both propulsion and/or onboard power demand. generator set configurations are possible with fixed speed, dual speed or variable speed settings.

Each generator set is built up with a permanent magnet alternator, which is water cooled and highly efficient. A water-cooled inverter is integrated in the design of the generator set to convert variable AC to DC power. This allows an easy integration connection with 750 VDC bus bar systems. The hybrid generator sets are factory load tested and optional classified by all classification societies as Lloyds, ABS, BV, GL-DNV & other.

Since 2007, Zenoro has supplied marine generator sets to many

companies, including Heesen Yachts in a range of 50 up to 760ekW. For Heesen’s Galactica Super Nova, generator sets are ABS Classed and equipped with a Zero Soot System (active soot filter with fuel burner). The design of the soot system was integrated into the design of the generator set to include a special carrying frame. A Soundown water drop silencer/water separator was included in the scope to achieve a very low exhaust noise level. Also rubber design mounts were used for optimum lowest noise/vibrations.

Dutch Design Dedicated to delivering reliable power on board of luxury mega yachts, all units are designed, built and tested on site in the Netherlands, and comply with the highest quality and certification demands. Zenoro generator units are equipped with the latest and cleanest engine technology available. NPS Diesel with its worldwide distributor and service network is in place to offer support all around the world.

Describe the Burgess service?

now covers the entire worLd with Branches

the unique aspect of our service is that we work cohesively together as one team and are not competing internally with one another, which is where our business model differs from other brokerage houses. clients therefore reap the benefit of the whole ‘Burgess machine’ – the whole organisation – regardless of which superyacht service they require. clients have a primary contact in every appropriate division, whether it be charter, sales, operational management, new build, insurance or crew services. we also understand that success

catering to clients in key locations. superyacht industry speaks with ceo Jonathan Beckett who has led Burgess to become a leading superyacht brokerage house.

BROKERS & CHARTERERS

Jonathan Beckett, CEO Burgess

Burges became the first yacht brokerage firm ever to receive the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2001.

Recent Charters | Solandge The 2013-built Solandge was launched from the Lürssen Shipyard in Germany to world acclaim. At 85.1m she is among the largest and most luxurious charter yachts on the market, conceived by industry-leading designers and highly experienced owners.

does not come from complacency and are prepared to embrace every opportunity to provide an over and above service. it’s second nature for us to jump on planes to spend face time with clients, to discuss plans or resolve issues, rather than relying always on telephone or email. we have recently expanded to include a crew services division – Burgess crew services – which handles all aspects of crew requirements on our large fleet of managed yachts. we have nearly 90 yachts in the fleet ranging from about

30m to 160m, so this entails responsibility for approximately 1,400 crew members. another service we have recently introduced to complement our full superyacht service offering is Burgess Yachting Financial services, which focuses on providing expert in-house risk assessment advice for a comprehensive insurance solution for any yacht. we launched our asian operation out of singapore last year to service our growing number of asian clients and are gearing up to open another office in a new territory later this year.

What are some challenges you face within the industry? there are several different areas where we face challenges: • Clients who ask for an expert opinion but elect not to listen carefully to the voice of experience. • The minefield relating to VAT in the EU. • Increased legislation, particularly pertaining to crew safety, manning, charter regulations, LY3 (the large yacht code) and PYc (passenger yacht code). • Economic influences such as the downturn

BROKERS & CHARTERERS

Recent Charters | Siren Siren is a 74m-luxury motor mega yacht built in 2008, refitted in 2013. Her owners, enthusiasts for open-air living, worked closely with Newcruise Yacht Projects + Design, also responsible for Triple Seven, to create interior spaces that flow seamlessly into the open deck areas. She won the coveted Yacht of the Year Award at the World Superyacht Awards in 2009.

in certain markets eg: russia and china. • A jittery market in Europe due to economic uncertainty and the possibility of Brexit.

How do you see the refit market developing?

Recent Sales | Stella Maris Stella Maris is a spectacular 72m yacht, which represents a definitive step forward for VSY and is also conceived to be taken as a reference point for the market. The project – entrusted to the expertise of Espen Oeino in cooperation with Laurent Giles Naval Architects – blends traditional elements of design and layout with new variations such as the staggered internal decks, the heights of the saloons and the innovative form of the bow.

it’s clear that the refit market is an important sector and it is a growing market as there is a lot of inventory. Yachts have a long lifespan and at some stage every yacht will need a refit to some degree or another. nevertheless, refit projects are not easy. Building a new yacht is actually easier than undertaking a major refit. however, the additional income stream from refits should not be underestimated as demonstrated by certain prominent northern european shipyards which are now showing interest in refitting their own products. it’s also worth emphasising that there are currently some very attractive opportunities in the brokerage (pre-owned) yacht market, where a refit will really come into its own. For example, golden odyssey ii represents a fantastic purchase opportunity for a buyer prepared to entertain a refit as the scope of this project offers extensive possibilities.

Can you provide insight into the marketing strategies for the upcoming years? in this day and age of advanced communications, it’s obviously all about

BROKERS & CHARTERERS remaining ahead of the curve while staying relevant. we are currently strongly focused on honing our electronic marketing and social media, which are the key channels we see developing and evolving in the short to medium term. in a crowded market place, more tailored, more targeted marketing also has to be a priority. Boat shows will remain an important aspect of our marketing reach, but the number of boat shows around the world is also under discussion within the industry and we may well see fewer shows going forward, but more specialised ones.

Recent Sales | Twizzle The 57.49m Custom Twizzle was built in 2010 by Royal Huisman and last refitted in 2015. The interior was designed by Todhunter Earle with exterior styling by Redman Whiteley Dixon. Twizzle’s interior layout sleeps up to 8 guests in 4 rooms, including a master suite, 2 double cabins and 1 twin cabin.

How do you see the yacht brokerage sector developing new regions such as south east asia (particularly china) will become important for the brokerage sector, but it’s a slow rather than a fast burn. a lot of time and energy is required to make things happen. You have to be very proactive and go in with a long-term view. new and developing markets need educating as superyachts are not part of their culture. even in established markets, we are always looking for the needle in the haystack and it requires very careful targeting. to succeed in new markets brokers will increasingly have to demonstrate real experience and knowledge – to add tangible value. it requires hard work. simply registering a client name won’t be sufficient to get a deal across the finish line. superyacht transactions are very complex. it’s not like selling a house. Buyers and sellers want to work with those at the frontline and they want the inside track on what’s really going on in the industry. it’s not just about clicking on a website.

Recent Sales | C9 C9 (formerly Cloud 9) is a 60m motor yacht built in 2009 by CMN Yachts in Cherbourg (France). Winch Design is responsible for her beautiful exterior and interior design. C9 yacht has a steel hull with an aluminium superstructure with a beam of 11.10m and a 3.35m draft and 3 decks made from Teak.

What changes or trends are there within the industry? Yachts are becoming larger and more complex. the percentage at the very top end of the market is small, but has a significant effect on the industry. the 100m+ new build motor yacht market has remained quite buoyant throughout the global financial crisis since 2008. after a period of stagnation, the sailing yacht market is on the move, as sellers have finally decided to meet the market. Quality shipyards are all very busy and are booked out until 2020 in some cases (Feadship and Lürssen for example). the clientele of these big new builds is very discerning and they relish the creative process of having a custom yacht designed. on the brokerage side, prices of pre-owned quality yachts have firmed up as inventory has gradually decreased, therefore yards building semi-custom yachts have started to reap the benefits of this shift in buying trends.

Recent Charters | Mondango 3 The 56.4m Mondango 3 was built in 2014 by Alloy Yachts. This luxury vessel’s sophisticated exterior design and engineering are the work of Dubois, while Reymond Langton Design designed the yacht’s interior.

OUTFITTERS PAGE Berthon Launches Superyacht Tender Support The recently launched new service targeting the International superyacht market focuses on the tenders that are essential for the smooth running of a superyacht. The new Berthon service includes the transportation of the tender, from anywhere in the world, to Berthon’s Lymington shipyard where skilled teams work intensively on it. Berthon Director, Dominic May, explains “Our highly skilled workforce has a diverse range of marine trade skills including engineering, welding, electrical and electronics, GRP and epoxy composite repairs, and spray painting.” The service includes the refit, repair, maintenance and servicing of tenders, limousines, RIBs and jet-skis. i. www.berthon.co.uk

OYS Launch New Electric Vertical Retracting and Rotating Thrusters Ocean Yacht Systems Limited (OYS) has just launched a market first for the yacht industry, with their electric driven range of vertical retracting and rotating thrusters. Driven via a compact Permanent Magnet Motor, the new AC powered series from OYS is available in a power range of 30 - 400Kw. The thruster can be used as bow or stern unit offering a solution previously only available using hydraulics. The new electric design has already been supplied to a 50m high speed vessel where it provides a stern thruster solution. i. oceanyachtsystems.co.uk

Cockwells’ latest 9.5m limousine Cockwells launched a new 9.5m limousine tender at the beginning of the year. She was specifically designed not only to fit within the dimension and weight restrictions of the tender garage, but also to reflect the aesthetics of the mother ship. The use of a combination of carbon deck and superstructure and the latest composite products for the hull, keep the weight to a minimum. This limousine has been designed by the in-house team at Cockwells in collaboration with naval architect Andrew Wolstenholme. She is equipped with a single 370hp Yanmar engine which takes her up to 36 knots with twelve passengers and two crew members on board. i. www.cockwells.com

Gocycle Launches New Model G3 Gocycle created by an ex McLaren engineer, is different to many conventional Ebikes and is one of lightest electric (16kg), folding Ebikes on the market. For this particular reason, the marine sector and a variety of superyacht retailers in the Netherlands, South of France, Spain, Germany and the UK have recognised this unique product. Gocycle is exceptionally viable for the marine market in that the Gocycle can be folded and stowed within minutes and offers the perfect opportunity to explore ports and surrounding areas with ease. i. www.gocycle.com

Let the MetamorphosA Take Place MetamorphosA transforms a full flush deck into an enclosed area for comfortable relaxation. This is a new sundeck concept for the next generation of superyachts. MetamorphosA is space efficient with only a small recess in the Sundeck floors and two boxes of approximately 1x1m on the deck level below the Sundeck sufficient to store the entire unit, creating a protected area of maximum 50m². Once stored, all equipment disappears in the deck, resulting in a completely level deck. i. www.alukwa.nl

Greenline‘s New Features to the GL36 The Greenline 36 includes a large-capacity Lithium battery pack as a standard feature. Required for electric driving, the pack also provides the beneficial side effect of having 220 or 110 V AC on board at all times allowing for the use of standard home appliances such as a high-volume fridge, TV, electric cooking, blenders, or air conditioning unit. Additional standard features include solar panels, sliding roof, large fridge (240L), and induction cooker. Greenline 36 Hybrid is also the first production yacht ever to offer air conditioning/heating unit as a standard feature and this unit can run throughout the night without the disturbing noise of a generator. i. www.greenlinehybrid.si
