admirable than having a vision is being able to translate it into a craft of beauty and glory like the Malahne. In her heyday, Malahne played host to tycoons, royalty, Hollywood stars and movie moguls; but a 1980s refit stripped her of both her style and her dignity. It fell to her present day owner to restore her elegant lines and create an interior that evoked her original 1930s splendour. Drawing inspiration from the grand art deco houses, a wealth of bespoke joinery - from chevronpatterned sycamore veneers to roto-cut Japanese tamo ash and European tiger oak - reflects the passion of the era for mixing exotic woods and unique cuts. The result is a vessel that, from stem to stern, has spectacularly recaptured not just her youth, but her beauty. And, as has always been our maxim, true beauty lies within. www.ruiter.com

On the Cover Pendennis Shipyard has re-delivered the 85.6m motoryacht Aquila, after a refit programme that took exactly one year to complete. Aquila is the largest yacht yet to be refitted in the UK, and the scope of the work undertaken includes an impressive revitalisation of all five deck levels. To facilitate the extent of design and technical changes required, the interiors on Aquila needed to be stripped back to bulkheads across most areas. The team completely updated the social spaces, modernised technical systems and lighting, and restyled the boat across an area of over 750m2. SY I 2016 | Vo l u me 11 | I s s u e 4 | 3

between exterior and interior, creating a seamless assimilation with the surrounding waters. With the awe-inspiring amount of glass in her superstructure and exceptional light produced by a comprehensive LED lighting system, the brightness of Aquarius allows the clear, unimpeached viewing of pieces chosen from the owner’s private art collection. The arrangement of galleys, pantries and crew service areas, staterooms and suites reflect the clever infrastructure toiled over so intensely by the design teams. With her beautifully finished detail, dimensions and scale, Aquarius has set a new benchmark for both Feadship and the international superyacht industry.

3 September saw the launch of Feadship’s spectacular superyacht Aquarius at its Aalsmeer yard in the Netherlands. With a top speed of 17 knots, this latest creation reinforces Feadship’s reputation for adhering strictly to the highest possible standards, with profile and interior designed by Dutch company Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design in collaboration with the owner’s individual design team and Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects. Certain well-known elements recur in the conventional bow and raked superstructure shape, but the vessel herself is entirely customised to conform to the concept visualised by her immensely experienced owner. Two years of intense design-work resulted in a perfect harmony

news in brief Siemens Software Optimises Ferretti Yachts Solutions from Siemens’ Product Lifestyle Management (PLM) software business are being adopted by Ferretti Group to further optimise the design and production of its prestigious yachts and CRN brands. This will help reduce time to market and lower production costs, but not at the expense of product quality. Ferretti chose Siemens PLM Software for its ability to collect the product design data from various PLM players in one open platform. This decision is in line with the Italian Group’s new business strategy involving substantial investments in the production of new vessels.
Debut Delta Carbon Yachts’ Flagship Hull #3 of Delta Carbon Yachts’ 88 series was delivered to its American owner in July, and will make her stateside debut at the 2016 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in November. Another American will be the proud owner of hull #4 in the summer of 2017, and hull #5 is currently under negotiation. Parent company, Swedish yacht builder Delta Powerboats, entered the megayacht arena in 2013 with its 88 Carbon Sport Yacht, the largest in a series of all-carbon-fibre sport yachts. The 24.4m hull can reach a top speed of 38 knots without losing its superb maneuverability and effortless handling.

EVO Yachts Teams Up With G Marine
SepSys is a Dutch company that develops and manufactures air intake separation systems for marine and offshore applications worldwide, solutions include mist eliminators, coalescers and filter systems. SepSys helps to protect the ship against the negative effects of salt water and ther contaminants such as dust, bugs, sand and soot. The air intakes are the lungs of the vessel and SepSys likes to give them the attention they deserve. Recently, the company has launched it’s new SepSys Flux Series brochure containing technical specifications of their marine and offshore air intake solutions, such as mist eliminators and filter systems. Willem Vraets, founder, has over a decade of experience in high-end air intake separation systems. To guarantee maximum flexibility and top quality, all their products are fully engineered and manufactured in the Netherlands. SepSys will be attending METS. If you wish to schedule a meeting, please contact Mr Vraets at willem@sepsys.nl or www.sepsys.nl.
EVO Yachts has established a new partnership, naming Floridabased G Marine as their exclusive representative in Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean. This is part of EVO Yacht’s strategy for expansion into international markets, a natural progression following the global recognition of their first model, the EVO 43, last year. G Marine, who consider themselves to be ‘primarily boaters, who also sell boats’ are stimulated by the pure joy that boating brings to their families and clients. They are also the exclusive dealer to the Americas for the renowned 100-year-old Spanish shipbuilder, Astondoa, and the Florida dealer for the UK’s Fairline Yachts.
Relocation and Expansion for YachtProjects International YachtProjects International has moved it’s UK operation to Solent Refit’s site on Southampton Water in Hythe, England. Solent Refit, which provides 10,000m2 of undercover working halls and waterside working areas, is enthusiastic about the move, as they see a synergy in what the two companies have to offer. With a strong accent on British craftsmanship, the Solent Refit facility offers YachtProjects International a flexible platform, allowing work to be carried out easily and economically alongside Solent Refit’s own team. In addition to this, YachtProjects International are soon to expand, with new offices in New Zealand and Australia being set up to supplement their existing satellite office in Durban, South Africa.

ROYAL HUISMAN BOOTH NO.
10.610 METS 2016
The words ‘build me my dream’ are music to the ears of any yacht builder. Royal Huisman is no exception, and the question resulted in the creation of a breathtaking, state-of-theart, 81m 3-masted schooner. Ranked in the top 10 of the world’s largest sailing yachts, this Asian client’s dream is the product of a collaboration between Dykstra Naval Architects, designer Mark Whitely and the regional liaison services of Northrop & Johnson Asia. Mark Whiteley himself sees the design of an 81m newbuild contemporary schooner as an opportunity of a career lifetime, and, for Dykstra Naval 2016.229x153rowers(press).pdf 13/09/2016 Architects, 1helping to create 17:04 such an innovative, fast and remarkable vessel is unquestionably a project to be ticked off the bucket list.

news in brief Canados Teams Up With Technopool
One of the main objectives of Rome-based shipyard Canados is to provide reliable after-sales service to its clients. To support this intention, they looked into the options of how to get record-time support to their vessel owners anywhere in the Med. A partnership with leading refit house Tecnopool provided the answer, allowing Canados to offer its clients service and warranty work in the most reputable Mediterranean shipyards, using technical assistance from Tecnopool’s experts. A winwin situation, as Tecnopool is delighted to be working with a shipyard whose facilities are first-class.
Dahm Classic Evolves from Dahm 120
On special request, Beiderbeck Designs have come up with a new classic ketch, called simply the Dahm Classic. Based on the modern concept of a cruiser/racer characterised by the Dahm 120, the 53m Dahm Classic was created to comply with the request of a client who wanted a Dahm 120 in a ‘classic outfit’. Retaining all the newest innovations, latest technology, high comfort and maximum safety, the result upholds the original concepts of spacious interior, top comfort and above average dynamic sailing performance.

GROWTH IN ALL AREAS
METS 2016 THE 2016 EDITION OF METS IS DESTINED TO BE BIGGER THAN EVER. FROM 15 TO 17 NOVEMBER, OVER 22,000 PROFESSIONALS FROM 112Â COUNTRIES WILL GATHER IN THE AMSTERDAM RAI. THE IMPRESSIVE growth figures cut across all areas of the three-day show; there have been some layout changes and a new hall has been added. Successful features, such as the SuperYacht Pavilion and Marina & Yard Pavilion, have expanded and extra facilities have been put in place to facilitate networking. Coupled with a significant increase in the average stand size, the developments illustrate that the marine industry is well and truly back in business.

here has been a notable rise in the number of stands in the pavilions at METS when compared to the 2015 exhibition. Many more square metres have been booked at the SuperYacht Pavilion (SYP) compared to 2015, including first-time exhibitors such as Mapei, Nobiskrug and Pin-Craft. This is why the SuperYacht Pavilion has been extended by an extra half hall to take over the entire span of halls 10 and 11. This confirms that a lot has happened since the first edition of the SuperYacht Pavilion, which started with

22 exhibitors back in 2005. Earlier this year, there were as many registrations for both the Marina & Yard Pavilion (MYP) and Construction Material Pavilion (CMP) as there were total exhibitors at the 2015 show. Notable newcomers in these pavilions include Marina Projects and Dockmarine in the MYP, and Scott Bader and BNS Industrial in the CMP.

designed to optimise social and networking opportunities as well as to accommodate the ongoing demand for exhibition stands, the successful InnovationLAB concept and stage has been moved to Hall 6, connecting Hall 1 to Hall 7. It will form a central innovation hub where presentations dedicated to the winning and nominated products for the prestigious DAME Design Award will be held. “It is pleasing to see so many companies registering to take part for the first time. This will help accelerate growth in the future, with the
METS show being seen as the meeting place of choice for the global leisure marine industry. Our challenge now is to live up to the expectations set by our high standards and focus on welcoming even more visitors from the global marine industry at future METS events,” according to the organisation.

Yachtlite
YACHTLITE BOOTH NO.
This year, Yachtlite (together with its business partner Optonaval) will present a jointly developed ‘solid state’ system called HRS, which stands for Horizon Reference System. The system assists the helicopter pilot in finding the perfect landing time. Due to the perfectly-fitted lighting elements and high precision sensors in the body of the vessel, the roll behaviour of the ship is displayed in real-time. The previous conventional mechanical horizon bar is not well received by yacht designers, because it looks like a foreign body on a designed yacht. Optonaval supplies sophisticated, cutting-edge expertise for the entire range of HVLAS (Helicopter Visual Landing Aid System) developed for superyachts and naval vessels. Yachtlite is known for its reliable and aesthetic LED light elements – a perfect example of combining beautiful design with precision and functionality, where controls and lighting elements come together in one unit. The first system has been installed successfully. The lighting elements can be integrated in the yacht’s architecture either individually or in a variety of configurations and can therefore be incorporated seamlessly into the design of the yacht or vessel. The HRS system is a perfect addition to the current and very well-known helicopter-deck lighting solutions by Yachtlite.

The DuTch Don’T like To blow Their own TrumpeTs, which is why one of our mosT famous sayings, roughly TranslaTeD, is ‘keep iT normal’. nonetheless, it behooves me to say that the last couple of years have been impressive ones for the Dutch superyacht cluster. words by Jeroen sirag

t was a fine achievement that hiswa holland yachting group members won both the motoryacht (feadship) and sailing yacht (Vitters) of the year awards at this year’s world superyacht awards. claasen, mulder, heesen and holland Jachtbouw all won their categories on the same evening. and four other Dutch yards were finalists, emphasizing the breadth of talent we have in the netherlands and the superlative quality on offer to owners.
Impressive Results These results come on the back of some impressive numbers. having made 21 deliveries
in 2015, members of the hiswa holland yachting group also received orders for another 24 superyachts last year averaging 56m, an increase of 26.3% on 2014. The forecast for 2016 is 25 deliveries with a total length of 1,425m. There are two other figures that are important to mention as they allow us to see the bigger picture. holland was responsible for a quarter of the world’s deliveries in terms of value in 2015 and the average value of those superyachts was eur 52 million, twice the average build worldwide. how did a small country like holland become such a big player within the global industry? The Dutch have a great history of maritime trading that dates back to the golden age of shipping in the 1600s. as a low-lying country, our battle against the floodwaters led to extraordinary feats of engineering well into the 20th century. by blending a rich heritage of age-old craftsmanship with cutting edge technologies and a genuine desire to constantly learn from best practices, the superyacht cluster in holland has earned its place as a global leader.
We All Have a Story to Tell behind every Dutch superyacht yard and supplier is a story. behind every owner is a story. and, inevitably, behind every newly launched superyacht or product is a story, which blends all of the above and more. Three years ago the hiswa holland yachting group started a new campaign focused on the essential elements that make our members unique. METs 2016

Dutch Marine Panels – Veneer as Art Hans Golbach, Director of Kuiper Dutch Marine Panels, says people rarely get excited when he explains his work to them. “It’s not very sexy I’m afraid, but I think it’s the most wonderful thing in the world. We produce and supply surfaces for various uses that are guaranteed to be perfectly flat. This requires an awesome amount of technology, craftsmanship and innovation… And that is exciting! “Yes, we make panels. But not all panels are good enough to bear the brand name Kuiper. Wood is combined with every imaginable material to create special panels with unique specifications. The innovation and technology we apply to produce the average sheet of 3m² is truly impressive.” “Our family business started in the scenic landscape of Twente, 60 years ago. Like me (Mr Kuiper) the founder, thoroughly enjoyed
his work and the craftsmanship that brought out the hidden beauty of nature. Today, our veneers are an art form in their own right. Only by using the best materials and craftsmanship can you ensure quality. If we can’t find a panel material that meets our requirements, we have it purpose-made from trees that grow under similar conditions in the same region. This has the added benefit of guaranteeing consistent quality. Add a good sprinkling of Twente’s clearheadedness and you have innovative solutions that pool different materials to create panels with unique specifications. The result is more than veneers. The result is Dutch Marine Panels.” Kuiper Dutch Marine Panels has more than 60 years’ experience in manufacturing various panels for interiors. Quality products and organisation have propelled the company

De Keizer Marine Engineering – Half a Century in Maritime Installation Niels de Keizer is the Financial Director of De Keizer Marine Engineering. In 1965, his grandfather Anton de Keizer started a traditional ship repair company in Amsterdam – at a time when computers and software were the stuff of science fiction and only James Bond had something remotely comparable to a smartphone. Niels de Keizer explains: “Anton was a forward-thinker but I doubt that he dreamed about the complex switching systems we design today. Could he have envisaged a helicopter platform that rises from the nose of a yacht when a helicopter arrives? Even my father, Johan de Keizer, could surely not have believed such developments possible when he switched from electronic marine installations for inland shipping to the superyacht market in the early 70s.

“One thing I am certain of, though, is that they would be proud of the company that my brother
Sjoerd and I manage today, with nearly 200 employees and multiple international offices. They would admire the DekaSmartGrid, our intelligent power consumption system. And they’d be impressed at how De Keizer Marine Engineering combines the best technology and software to minimise fuel consumption, keep environmental impact to a minimum and optimise the space that people enjoy onboard their yachts.” The company has seen 50 years of craftsmanship and innovation, but one thing has remained unchanged: De Keizer Marine Engineering is an ambitious family business that loves to master any challenge that comes its way. In the 50 years since its establishment, De Keizer Marine Engineering has been transformed from a start-up to a designer of unique top-quality products. As yachts are equipped with an increasing number of electro-technical installations and computer-controlled alarm, monitoring & control systems, De Keizer Marine Engineering leads the way in finding the ideal solutions.

Impressive Revitalisation aquila is the largest yacht yet to be refitted in the Uk, and the scope of the work undertaken includes an impressive revitalisation of all five deck levels, as adrian tinkler, fleet technical manager at burgess, explains: “to facilitate the extent of design and technical changes required, the interiors on aquila needed to be stripped back to bulkheads across most areas. the team completely updated the social spaces, modernised technical systems and lighting, and restyled the boat across an area of over 750m2,

the scale of which was unprecedented by any of the suppliers in such a short time period. “thanks to efficient planning and collaboration between the many hundreds of people involved at each stage of the design, specification and execution phases, the team delivered on time a truly remarkable rebirth of this beautiful yacht,” adds mr tinkler.
Technology by Design technology upgrades as part of the yacht’s fiveyear survey include a new av and it system, radar equipment, air conditioning and fresh air handling systems, along with the rebuild of the four generators. a complete infrastructure repaint completes the refit works. redman whiteley dixon (rwd) and susan young interiors were commissioned to evaluate the existing room and exterior layouts to reformulate spaces and improve flow between each area of the yacht. significant enhancements include reconfiguring the owner’s suite along with the addition of a 60m2 private deck area, repositioning the Jacuzzi to the forward sun deck, and integrating a cinema into the main salon. tony dixon, director at rwd, explains the styling approach: “we selected a mix of dark wood finishes, pale leather panels with nickel trim and many new special surface materials all interplaying together to offer subtle style variations throughout the interior.”

The refit and repair mind-set at blohm+Voss is to have the ability to think quickly and overcome issues as they arise; to find solutions to improve a vessel’s aesthetic appearance, as well as raise its class; and to boost its technical excellence and preserve its value. furthermore, blohm+Voss offers megayacht owners innovative services for technical management, logistics, operations, administration and shore support, all of which helps to optimise operating costs and asset.
Technical Efficiency in June 2016, blohm+Voss won the tender to establish a yacht refit location in the south of france. The dock space in La ciotat will be ready for yacht refits in november 2016. blohm+Voss will mainly use this new facility in the heart of the mediterranean to maintain and service megayachts over 80m in length.

o lead in terms of quality and performance, that should be my company’s reputation.” This ambition of company founder friedrich Lürßen in 1875 still characterises the philosophy of the bremen-based shipyard today. fr. Lürssen werft is still owned by the family and in 2013 delivered the world’s largest yacht in length, the 180m azzam. in 2016, it delivered the world’s largest yacht by gross tonnage, the 156m dilbar.
The Early Years
company founder Friedrich Lürßen
The name fr. Lürssen werft, which has been headed by the same family for four generations, is associated around the world with the development and manufacture of naval and special ships, as well as luxury yachts, to the highest standards. with seven production facilities in north Germany, Lürssen has highly specialised shipyard equipment at its disposal which enables more than 1,800 employees to build, overhaul and repair ships of 60m in length or longer. a central characteristic of the owneroperated shipbuilding company is its independence from any kind of outside influence. The quality of the products alone is the measure of all things.
Quality and Performance The boatyard founded in bremen-aumund without access to water demonstrated its leading role in terms of quality and performance as early as 1886, when friedrich Lürßen, in cooperation with automaker Gottlieb daimler, constructed one of the first three motorboats in the world. only three years later, the staff, which had meanwhile grown to 60 employees, completed the 1,000th boat. and with the new location in bremen-Vegesack added in 1904, Lürssen gained a direct connection to the water. in 1924, the company supplied the first models for the flourishing yacht sector to customers in

the usa. another milestone followed in 1956, when the German navy became one of the shipyard’s major customers and is still among the company’s biggest clients in naval shipbuilding.
A World of Luxury at the end of the 1980s, the current owners and peter and friedrich Lürßen took the decision to intensify the construction and manufacture of individual luxury yachts, establishing it as a second business activity alongside naval shipbuilding. This has proven to be a success and together with renowned designers such as Jon bannenberg and Tim heywood, around a third of the world’s 100 largest yachts have been launched by the Lürssen company – including such milestones in the shipbuilding industry as pelorus, rising sun, and the sailing yacht eos. Lürssen cultivates its unique independence on the world’s markets primarily in the interest of its customers, for this keeps the company free to choose systems that match the customers’ desire for national and international technologies. decisive criteria in this context are always performance capability, quality, safety and reliability of the products, which are constantly being developed on the platform of time-tested, customer-specific solutions.
Family of Shipbuilders The exclusive yachts from Lürssen also enjoy an internationally excellent reputation when it comes to quality and performance. in this segment, Lürssen is positioned in the market as a family with deep roots in shipbuilding. The individual wishes of the customers are the measure of all things, following the motto ‘Lürssen Yachts are as individual as their owners’. The spectrum of the yachts, which are between 60 and 200m long and designed by leading ship designers, ranges from elegant,

Altruistic Intentions as a family-run shipyard, Lürssen sees itself as having a special responsibility not only to its customers, but in equal measure to its employees as well. Therefore, the 1,800 people rely on traditional values such as stability and loyalty and long-term perspectives. beyond that both the Lürßen family and the whole company see it as an obligation to reduce as far as possible the effects of the yachts on the environment. for this reason, Lürssen is constantly investing in energy technologies which have led to great progress in the area of sustainability. hence all latest-generation ships are marked by improved fuel efficiency and

lower emissions of soot, co2 and noise. moreover, Lürssen is the world’s first shipbuilding company to make use of the heat given off by the generators and propulsion engines on a large motor yacht to a large degree to produce portable water by means of desalination. ecological awareness is the second, equally important side of friedrich Lürßen’s ambition to lead in terms of quality and performance. in 2016 Lürssen delivered the 156m yacht dilbar – the largest yacht in the world. and by the end of this year the 104m project mistral will be the
second yacht to leave the shipyard in 2016. The founder’s dream to become one of the leading shipbuilders is still present in the spirit of Lürssen and all the people who work there.

Also, Fincantieri’s 134m-long Serene 1, one of the ten largest yachts ever built and one of the finest in terms of sophistication and technology, carries Wortelboer’s equipment. “Next in line are some important yachts for German and Italian yacht builders; it’s a pleasure to work on these top-of-the-bill yachts,” Mr Wortelboer states. “The anchors for these yachts are the biggest anchors we’ve ever made for the yachting industry. You can tell that the trend is for yachts to be bigger and bigger. We have to match up to those measurements with our equipment and that’s a really interesting process.” In cases like this, Wortelboer works in close collaboration with the builders to minimise the risk of anything going wrong. “This approach is really appreciated by both the customers and builders; we like to offer those extra services to make sure everything goes smoothly,” Mr Wortelboer explains.

most satisfying projects. “This truly was a dream job. Because it is a one-off yacht, we had customised stainless-steel equipment, such as the anchors with bottom plates, made specifically for her.” When we ask him about the future, Mr Wortelboer explains he is really excited about all the upcoming projects. “Every job is different and it’s a pleasure to work in this fascinating industry. We’re also really excited about the extra services we have to offer.” Besides the chains and anchors, Wortelboer also finds time to work on other innovative products, such as colourful chain cables. “At the moment we’re working on permanent (colourful) marks on our chain cables. Unfortunately, at the moment we can only provide this product in the Netherlands, but we want to release it worldwide later on.” “We’re also working on smaller anchors for the smaller sailing and motor yachts; we’ve been working on them for two years now but we need to get all the approvals before we can publicly launch them,” Mr Wortelboer adds, confirming that Wortelboer has a lot more in store for us.

tam was founded in 1954 and was one of the first shipyards in liguria. following its renowned millennium range, it began producing aluminium semi-displacement custom yachts from 30-40m in 2014. motoryacht gipsy is the first model in this range. the three deck, 7.8m beam yacht, boasts a unique amount of living space on board, and thanks to her aluminium construction, truly reflects her owner’s personal requirements. these include bespoke interior and exterior lines designed by tommaso spadolini, which showcase the remarkable international and awlgrip finish.
Decadent Space the main deck contains large decadent spaces including a nearly 40m2 main salon with cinema and a full beam dining area. there is also a fully furnished galley, a 25m2 pantry and separate access for crew. the yacht enjoys four ViP cabins on the lower deck featuring twin and double beds and ensuite bathrooms. the upper deck is completely dedicated to the owners, offering exclusive views and complete privacy from the rest of the yacht.

Considerable Range in regards to performance, a highly efficient semi-displacement hull gives the yacht a top speed of 20 knots and a considerable range of over 2,000 nautical miles. the yacht has a displacement of 295gt, at the maximum limit of the category, offering superior volumes for the 300gt category. special attention was given to limiting her draft, and the hull below the waterline features semi-tunnels giving gipsy versatility.
Paints and Coatings a mixed scheme of fifteen awlgrip and international products was used for this project across the hull, superstructure and decks. the underwater hull was painted with international trilux 33 antifouling, which can be used for all substrates including aluminium, and gives effective antifouling protection for up to 18 months. the awlgrip topcoat g/H line was used to paint the topside hull. for the superstructure, the 545 epoxy Primer was used to seal filler primers and fairing work before applying the awlcraft 2000 topcoat. easy-to-apply and fast drying, awlcraft 2000

Special Considerations on board, interfill deck was applied, a selfsmoothing specially formulated lightweight epoxy filler for use on pre-primed aluminium, steel and gRP deck surfaces. marco Rapallo from akzonobel, commented: “our team worked very closely with the yard and the high skilled team of applicators to ensure the yacht enjoyed optimum results. as it is an aluminium boat, some considerations had to be made in terms of the products used, and certain materials required specific techniques that were handled by the professional teams involved in the project. we are extremely proud to have been selected as a partner for this project and the finished yacht is truly remarkable.” matteo belardinelli from otam, added: “there are always challenges in projects but thanks to the technology, products used and the passion we all had for this project, we managed to control so many of the variables. the end yacht is simply stunning.”

G
ianneschi Pumps and Blowers has been a globally recognised name in the marine market since 1969. Having developed its own range, including the Gigetta, control pumps, control fans and specific products for OEM such as air-conditioning, water treatments and cooling pumps, its Gigetta self-priming pump has recently been renewed to increase performance and range. Made with a dual impeller system, which combines the centrifugal impeller characteristics (such as high dynamic fluid efficiency with a special helical impeller profile), it is designed for quick priming. All of the components have

been made with an impressive level of precision, and are made in high quality bronze and stainless steel to prevent corrosion.
The BMA Series The BMA series is made up of different versions of self-priming pumps that offer a large range of applications for varying uses. The BMA-S provides a large flow of water using only limited power, and is suitable for bilge, fire-fighting, ballast, fresh water washing and circulation applications. The BMA-M is best suited as a macerator pump as it is manufactured with an integrated grinder. The special centrifugal impeller is combined with a cutting unit, making it optimal for use with discharge water containing fibrous material;

The water heaters are made in stainless steel AISI 316L and have been subjected to twin chemical pickling and passivation on the inside, and surface treatment on the outside following the welding process. They are 30 to 50% thicker than the average market equivalent, and are tested individually after strict controls are delivered to the customer. Each product is given a specific serial number that instantly identifies all components used in the production stage, as well as any spare parts.
Pumps in Harmony
Optimum Airflow
Gianneschi has also developed the Control Pump system; a group of pumps composed of two or more pumps working in parallel, controlled by an automatic system. Depending on water consumption, one or more pumps are controlled at variable speeds, in order to guarantee the required water flow at the set pressure. The Control Pump system is made with horizontal or vertical multistage self-priming pumps, and is suitable for use where constant pressure from a variable water flow is required.
In addition, Gianneschi offers a range of blowers for use on megayachts. The ELL Helicoidal Blowers are designed to obtain large quantities of airflow at low pressures. The blowers can be installed horizontally or vertically, thus providing greater operational flexibility. All blowers are reversible, however they do operate best when installed and used in their preferred position.
Bigger and Better Gianneschi has also recently increased its production capacity by way of a new facility that is largely dedicated to the construction of a stainless steel water heater and storage tank for

Electric Elegance When Dutch electrical systems specialists GebharD electro Were askeD to apply their expertise to the silver arrows marine 14m arrow460Granturismo motor yacht, the response was clear – absolutely. the yacht, named mercedes, is the product of four years’ development by uk builder silver arrows marine, in collaboration with mercedes-benz style.

nveiled in 2012 as a concept at the monaco yacht show, mercedes-benz recently invited a select number of journalists from around the world to the south of France for a preview of the yacht. essential elements for this model are the electrical components, which were installed by Gebhard electro’s technicians in switzerland last year. “We were approached by radio Zeeland, who had been commissioned for the control panels and software, to collaborate on this one-of-a-kind yacht. two of our technicians travelled to switzerland to work closely with silver arrows marine to help them meet their demands for this exciting project. We delivered everything to do with cabling, electrical connections and various engineering elements and we installed a switchboard,” states Gebhard electro’s sales manager, richard van de Wiel. andre swets (chief electrician) states: “this project was a challenge because the boat is

The pre-treatment in chemical baths.
The new hybrid coating system.
P
rior to the application of paint, one of the best processes to begin with is chemical pre-treatment. This entails submerging the product in three different chemical baths to clean, degrease and apply a conversion layer. The conversion layer serves as the first layer of protection against corrosion, as well as enabling the first coat of paint to adhere to a clean product. To protect our products even further from the highly corrosive nature of a marine environment, FlowGrill has carried out a salt spray test on a sample product that has been scratched and damaged by hand after having being coated with standard traditional paint. The results show that the surface treatment should never contain any damage or hairline cracks.
Testing the Theory In collaboration with different international leading companies, FlowGrill has developed a new revolutionary quality improvement: a combination of powder coating and wet paint named the ‘hybrid coating system’. This new hybrid coating system consists of several treatments; after the first layer of chemical pretreatment, the next two layers consist of a special marine powder coating, while the last two layers consist of wet paint, being sure to use the same brand and colour that has been used on the yacht. The new hybrid coating system ensures a decreased sensitivity to damage and cracks due to the layers being far stronger and durable, as well as achieving a superior level of paint coverage around the edges. In addition, by using powder coatings, hard-toreach areas now receive the required layer of thickness.
Full Accreditation The new paint system has undergone a number of full, accredited tests over the course of four years before ever being applied to products on

Flowgrill.indd 49
yachts. The tests were carried out in laboratories by reputable international companies, such as TÜV. A variety of sample tests were carried out using differing conditions to ensure the quality of results.
Test Factors The main relevant test factors are: the ‘Cross Cut’ method, which uses a lattice pattern to test the level of separation resistance of paints and coatings layers with regards to substrates; the ‘Scratch’ test that uses a fine cut made by a knife to test the coating’s level of adhesion to substrates; the use of hot wet storage in 40°C and 98% rH to test the level of resistance against humidity; the reproduction of different weather conditions using QUV-A sunlight; the use of water storage to test the level of resistance to liquids; the use of hot dry storage to test the level of discolouration and bleeding of individual layers when exposed to high
temperatures; the level of resistance to artificial weathering over the course of 2,000 hours, including chalking, discolouration and loss of gloss; and finally, the ‘Salt Spray Test’, which tests the level of resistance to corrosion during an aggressive maritime climate over the course of 2,000 hours. The positive results of this extensive research goes to confirm the new hybrid coating system’s suitability for use on luxury yachts, and has proven to be a significant step forward for FlowGrill. In addition, using the new hybrid coating system also helps with the provision of a warranty thanks to its ability to increase a product’s lifespan.

hen it comes to yacht building, it’s precision engineering and truly bespoke interiors that are at the heart of Princess Yachts’ designs, supported by its long-standing partnership with product lifecycle management supplier siemens Plm software. the combination of bold technical innovation and detail-oriented craftsmanship epitomises Princess, and after five decades of designing and manufacturing motor yachts, the company is renowned for graceful hulls that are both agile and efficient, and interiors that exude quality, style and are cleverly resolved. founder david king explains the appeal of a Princess yacht: “we have a product that performs in all conditions and is timeless in its good looks. for Princess, every aspect of a boat has to be thought through and resolved, with elegance and without compromise.”
finesse tiny details well before the production stage,” mr lawrence notes. david hough, head of the company’s development engineering, leads the team responsible for mechanical and electrical systems. “we design electrical circuits in a dedicated software program, then we use nx to measure the looms and show how they fit into the overall design,” he explains. Andy hay, head of naval Architecture at Princess, is responsible for compliance with safety regulations and shipping class rules: “my team uses nx to ensure that the design meets structural and performance standards and will meet expectations right down to the allowance of light switches and window blinds in the structure.”
For Princess, every aspect of a boat has to be thought through and resolved, with elegance and without compromise.
>>
Passion mr king is involved from first concept, working closely with the company’s head of design, Andy lawrence, and its naval architect studio for 35 years, Bernard olesinski limited. Between three and six yacht designs are brought to market each year. “we schedule a gap between hull number one and hull number two, but this often gets compressed, and with the first six boats already sold with allocated delivery dates, the production teams frequently face pressures,” mr king explains. the only way to maintain this rate of production and advance the highest standards of quality is to use technology to facilitate the development process. Princess has a long-standing partnership with product lifecycle management (Plm) supplier siemens Plm software. it uses nxtm software for computer-aided design (cAd) and teamcenter software for storing information and managing workflows.
Attention to Detail when a new design is confirmed, the nx model files of the hull and deck are placed in teamcenter, which acts as the hub controlling all data in and out of the product development department. Although the work starts in 2d for simplicity and speed, the final result is a fully detailed 3d model of the entire boat showing how all components work together, and includes third-party supplier items. “with this complete nx assembly, designers can review different aspects of the boat in context and

Navigating With Knowledge Princess Yachts uses teamcenter to manage information on hundreds of thousands of parts and provide visibility and traceability across the company. in addition to storing design, analysis and performance data, teamcenter holds all due-diligence and compliance documentation and can be used to create business reports. “we always know where we are in our virtual world because teamcenter is infinitely searchable,” says mr hay. “when i go to teamcenter to locate a part, i can see every revision and who is working on the latest release.” Princess Yachts uses teamcenter to manage a library of standard parts, each with associated analysis and performance data. rob dewe, who is responsible for nx in development and teamcenter as an information hub, notes: “we previously used teamcenter workflows simply to release subassemblies. now we use them to ensure consistent standards of quality and communication.”

Product Focus “through the use of nx and teamcenter, Princess has increased efficiencies across all processes and is building bigger and better boats,” says mr coleman. with a constant focus on improvement, the company is now looking at enhancing the way in which it exchanges data with Bernard olesinski, and improving procurement through closer communication between teamcenter and its manufacturing resource planning system. “we are fundamentally a product company,” comments chris gates, Princess’ managing director. “we work with likeminded partners around the world who focus on customer care, and we put all our passion into the product because we believe that the customer will decide which product is best.” mr king concludes: “it takes two years to develop a boat, which typically has a five-year lifecycle. that means we are always looking ahead. Just as leonardo da vinci said – ‘details make perfection, and perfection is not a detail’.”

OUTFITTERS PAGE Portable Safety LED Work Lighting
Data Link, the Croatian manufacturer of LED lighting, has developed an innovative, low consumption, low maintenance, safety work lighting solution – Gala LED. The lighting is used throughout multiple stages of shipbuilding and ship repair – steelwork, sandblasting, high-pressure washing, and anticorrosion protection. High-quality materials, IP66 and IK10 protection grades and an operating voltage of 42-48VAC contribute to the high reliability and safety of this lighting in extreme working conditions. This cost-effective, 17W portable lighting solution with a 1,700 lumen output and a 3-year warranty is available now with an explosion-proof LED lamp following soon. i. www.datal.com
Tier 3 Diesel Marine Generators Kohler Power Systems’ diesel marine generators have KOHLER POWER been selected to power a new line of 18m yachts BOOTH NO. from Cruisers Yachts, Oconto. Kohler’s rapidly 12.221 expanding line of EPA Marine Tier 3-compliant diesel METS 2016 generators feature Kohler diesel engines and the company’s highly regarded DecisionMaker 3500 controller (DEC 3500). “We’re proud to be affiliated with the impressive new 18m yachts being rolled out from Cruisers Yachts,” said Greg Klompenhouwer, Senior Product Manager for Kohler Marine. “The company’s 60 Cantius and 60 Flybridge offer pleasurecraft owners an ideal combination of luxury, comfort, and style – and we anticipate our diesel generators being well received by these boaters who expect worry-free performance and peace-ofmind on the water.” i. www.kohlerpower.com
Controlling Communication
High-Temperature Insulations Germany-based thermal and acoustic insulation specialist Thermamax presented a new Engine Enclosure Design Study embodying ‘stealth-design’ principles. This design style deliberately avoids an elegant, soft-contoured approach. A blend of styles is given up in favour of a more aggressive appearance, expressing dynamism, manoeuvrability and speed. Large surface areas with 2D triangular features ensures strong reflections. Stealth-design is transferable to all 100% SOLAS-conforming Tmax-Insulation Enclosures, fulfilling all safety requirements for marine engine rooms. The striking, unique appearance of the Tmax-Design Study attracts individuals and boat owners who want something different, as well as complementing the general aura associated with sport boats. i. www.thermamax.com
Livewire Connections have supplied available communication and IT services to Sanlorenzo’s MY Pick Up. Livewire’s offices in Chessington, UK and Fort Lauderdale, USA worked together on this project. In addition to being perfectly placed geographically, they had the right engineering skills set, knowledge and portfolio of services and products, to meet the requirements to keep the 46m yacht connected and ready for the next stage of its travel plans. Pick UP continued touring the Great Lakes with a new Kerio NG500 control box, Pepwave 3G/4G router, Marlink VSAT airtime, Axxess Marine 3G/4G airtime, fully operating email system and comprehensive IT support. i. www.livewire-connections.com

WORD ON THE SEA
SuperYacht Industry’s Marco Geels
MYS vibes Once again, the Monaco Yacht Show has taken place at the sunny Port Hercules. I was there to admire the greatest superyachts at one of the biggest and luxurious shows. MYS is one of the most important shows for us and we’re happy to say that SuperYacht Industry has been a media partner of the show for 10 years now. One of my personal highlights was the official unveiling of Royal Huisman’s project ‘Build Me My Dream’ – which will be carried out in cooperation with Dykstra Naval Architects, designer Mark Whiteley and Bart Kimman of Northrop & Johnson Asia. I myself, and I’m sure many of you with me, am eager to see this dream-yacht become reality. Other news worth mentioning is the new production and service site from Palumbo Group in Ancona which will be part of Palumbo Superyacht division. This news followed shortly after the final incorporation of Isa Yachts into the Palumbo Group. Of course, the show came with plenty of cocktail parties; I attended a couple of them to mix business
with pleasure. The Deutsche Yachten Party and Holland Yachting Group Party, to name two, were again very well organised. I had a nice conversation with Phil Popham, the Sunseeker CEO, about their future plans. He invited us to join him on a sea-trial and shipyard tour. Needless to say we would like to take him up on this offer.
It was great to see what’s in store for the industy in 2017.

In addition, I came into contact with some promising new companies and gathered a lot of interesting news for the upcoming SuperYacht Industry magazines. It was great to meet up with our current and potential business relations and to see what’s in store for the industry in 2017. I hope you, too, had an enjoyable show and I look forward to meeting you at METS.

admirable than having a vision is being able to translate it into a craft of beauty and glory like the Malahne.
