Editor’s note
Kicking off 2017! In this issue of SuperYacht Industry, the first of 2017 with myself as Editor, we have no fewer than two boat shows to preview. On page 8 we look at the fifth Palma Superyacht Show, which takes place on 28 April to 2 May and incorporates a new Refit & Repair area befitting of the booming Balearics yachting market, and on page 34 the MYBA Charter Show, now in its 29th Edition. Taking place on 24 to 27 April it will for the first time be hosted in the sunny climes and cultural hub of Barcelona, taking up residence at OneOcean Port Vell for the next three consecutive years. Our Focus on Italy on page 12 takes an in-depth look at three booming shipyards, all boasting the ‘Made in Italy’ stamp of approval. The luxury motoryacht manufacturer Azimut Benetti Group is again at the top of the Global Order Book 2017 with its total number of yachts on order, under construction or on hold at a staggering 760. Columbus and ISA Yachts, both of which fall under the ever-expanding Palumbo Group umbrella, are successfully leveraging the solid 50-year shipbuilding heritage of their parent company, and proving to be a force to be reckoned with. We revisit Palumbo, a titan of the refit sector, in our Refit & Repair section on page 24, this time featured alongside fellow refit yards Royal Huisman (with its newly secured exclusive and exceptional deep water facilities at Emden Dockyard) and MB92 (which celebrates its 25th anniversary), as well as coatings specialist AkzoNobel. On page 47 we find out more about the multifunctional, touchscreen capabilities of the Kara navigation system, while on page 44 we learn how unified control centres are bridging the gap between client demands and integrated software requirements. And finally, in our Brokerage & Charter section, Fraser Yachts celebrates 70 years retaining pole position in sales and charter on page 50, and we feature yacht reports on two very special boats: the completely transformed 77.4m explorer yacht Legend on page 38; and the recently launched 85m Tripp Design luxury sailing yacht Aquijo on page 18. news in brief DAMEN Launches New Yacht Support Game Changer Dutch shipbuilder DAMEN has announced the launch of its 70m yacht support vessel, Game Changer. Available in time for the 2017 summer season and equipped with a helicopter hangar, Game Changer is targeted at those who want to have more fun off the beaten track, but with a significantly lower total cost of ownership. “Our clients want to go to exciting new destinations with less established superyacht infrastructure and they want to have more fun with larger tenders, larger helicopters and submersibles,” comments DAMEN Product Director Mark Vermeulen. “Game Changer is the massive leap forward in capability that they need, but at a much lower cost than a larger yacht.”

news in brief Videoworks Opens in Holland
Gulf Craft Partners with Drettmann
Italian leader in the field of system integration, Videoworks, has set up its Dutch company, Videoworks Europe of Noord-Holland, a region renowned for its shipbuilding industry. Located in Aalsmeer, a few miles away from Amsterdam, the aim of the Dutch HQ is to better serve the North European yachting market. Already in receipt of international orders, including a 70m order from a large Dutch shipyard, Videoworks BV confirms it intends to expand abroad and to grow in new markets.
Exhaust After Treatment Solutions for Superyachts
Gulf Craft has appointed Drettmann Yachts as the official sales partner for the award-winning UAE yacht builder across Europe, Russia and Ukraine. This new partnership, witnessed at boot Düsseldorf 2017, represents an exciting step change for the Bremen-based family business, with Drettmann continuing to focus on expansion. “We want to bring our experience gained over several years into the sector, and we enthusiastically look to Gulf Craft because we are impressed by its quality of craftsmanship, as well as the shipyard’s capacity to redefine yachting and elevate the standards of onboard luxury,” said Albert Drettmann, CEO of Drettmann International.
Newest Christensen Launch Moves to Finish Bay Christensen Shipyards’ 50m full-volume yacht has moved to one of the yard’s finish bays following the joining of Hull 38’s keel and cabin in February this year. Hull 38’s high-gloss black walnut interior is said to be nearing completion, and her interior bulkheads and walls are complete, as are a majority of the yacht’s plumbing runs. The Vancouver, Washington yard’s staging room is full of finished woodwork ready to be installed once the plumbing and wiring is complete, and Christensen anticipates Hull 38 will be ready for launch by summer of 2018.
NPS Diesel and Solfic Energy & Emission announced a joint venture in February to develop exhaust after treatment systems specifically for the superyacht industry, named XEAMOS. Based in the Netherlands and serving superyacht shipyards and owners, as well as leading yards in the commercial sector, XEAMOS combines the expertise of Solfic, which specialises in exhaust after treatment systems for specific marine and industrial applications, and NPS Diesel, which has established an almost worldwide sales and service network for superyacht generators.

TRADE SHOW
Shaping up for Growth in Palma The fifTh Palma SuPeryachT Show exTendS in 2017 To accommodate a brand new refit & repair area befitting of the booming Balearics yachting market.
T
he Palma Superyacht Show fulfils a pivotal role in the mediterranean yachting scene, having proven itself to be one of the key factors driving the yachting boom in the Balearics. Since its debut in 2013, it’s not only become a firm fixture on the yachting calendar but also a show that has managed to maintain its unique identity. This year’s fifth edition promises to strengthen the show’s success even further by being the biggest to date in terms of participating yachts and number of exhibitors. held from 28 april to 2 may in 2017, it will run concurrently with the Boat Show Palma. while last year’s event saw a significant increase in the quality of participating yachts and exhibitors,
this year’s show will be extended with a brand new refit & repair area. This new B2B section will see a heavy focus on industry professionals and will consist of 21 fully-equipped 3 x 3mstands.
Hub of Growth Palma de mallorca boasts a booming big-boat maintenance business and has become the mediterranean’s most popular spot for yacht servicing and maintenance, exemplified by the increase in new companies, employees and space occupied by yachts under repair over the past few years. unsurprisingly, most of the available refit & repair stands were quickly taken by key players in the large superyacht sector,

such as local industry titans STP and astilleros de mallorca. This exciting new sector of the show will be complemented by the ‘captain’s corner’, a designated area that will consist of a bar run by fosh food, as well as a large tent where cuttingedge presentations, product launches, talks and seminars will take place. the UK, Germany and New Zealand, and if the Refit & Repair area works well, we will all benefit as a result of having a more concentrated quality audience.”
Change Afoot Local and international visitors can look forward to an irresistibly varied line-up of more than 70 distinctive superyachts this year. The aweinspiring and varied selection of yachts over 24m will all be immediately available for charter and/or sale – just in time for the Mediterranean summer season, which commences right after the show. A game changing aspect of the Palma show is the 50/50 ratio of power to sail, which means it is one of the largest sailing superyacht shows in the world. Two such remarkable sailing superyachts set to be present are Nautor’s Swan’s 112 Song of the Sea, and the recently built Oyster 82 Reina. The 34.14m Song of the Sea was last refitted in 2015 and is often referred to as the most beautiful Swan. Aside from turning heads in port and on the water, she’s also capable of world-wide cruising in any weather. Another shining example of a sail yacht at home in the high seas is the 25.15m Oyster Reina. Her twin rudders and hydraulic systems make her a dream to sail. Moreover, this easy-to-handle, yet powerful sailing superyacht, is also quick to take her performance to another level; her sister ship

took first in class during the 2015 Superyacht Cup in Palma. A completely different beast is the 33.48m Mangusta 108 Kimochiii. This mighty motor yacht was built in 2013 with a modern contemporary interior and is in as new condition. Apart from being blessed with muscular lines, she is also powered to reach maximum speeds of over 30 knots. Kimochiii is now for sale well below replacement cost.
Back-to-Back Charter Season A second remarkable new development is the increase of charter yachts starring in this 2017 edition of the show. This substantial boost has been a direct result of the relative ease with which yachts can now obtain a Spanish charter licence. There is currently a much larger number of top quality superyachts available in the Balearics, many reporting busy seasons with back-to-back charters. As a result, the show’s organisers are actively reaching out to a new audience; a market made up of quality visitors who are not only new to yachting, but the beauty of cruising the turquoise waters of Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza under the expert guidance of professional crew.
Perfect Platform Organised by the industry, for the industry, the Mediterranean’s most friendly superyacht show provides the perfect platform for yachting’s
leading charter, sales, service and equipment companies to showcase all they have, while additionally benefitting from an abundance of lively networking opportunities. Event coordinator Jane Thompson states that 98% of shore-side exhibitor stand space was snapped up by the most prominent movers and shakers in the large superyacht sector. In fact, there have been more requests from companies who want to participate than there is space available. Moreover, no less than 85% of exhibitors (60 in total) are returning participants, although the show is equally excited to welcome first-time exhibitor Vitters, the award-winning Dutch high-end performance yacht builder. Arne Ploch, president of joint organisers the Balearic Yacht Brokers Association, and yacht broker at Camper & Nicholsons Palma, sums up the upcoming 2017 edition: “This year we will see an increase of international exhibitors who have realised the Palma Superyacht Show is here to stay and is an important event on the yachting calendar. Our concept of an industryorganised yacht show works well and we are pushing hard to attract new blood into yachting by offering a great platform demonstrating what yachting is all about. With the Refit & Repair area we enlarge the exhibition and provide an area directly aimed to attract Captains and Project Managers involved.”

the two models within the range – the 121 and 141 – designed by marco Casali, are yachts built in composite materials designed as a natural evolution of the successful isa sport series. emphasising its sporty nature, and merging its unmistakable lines with the stylistic super sport trends of innovation with automotive styling, isa Yachts has managed to maintain the characteristics of liveability from the original model. With a greater mass than its smaller sister, the 141 has its focus on a wider fully equipped flying bridge with a t-top based on the isa heritage design. the cockpit follows the split-level design creating different levels of functions for living at sea, with a baroque italian architecture accent on the unique stairway, which connects the lower deck directly with the forward beach area.
the three sun-pad areas, bathing pool, sofas and dining table are all fully served by several storage areas, plus an american bar directly connected to the cockpit, and the stairs are situated below the glass-bottomed bow pool, creating a spectacular illumination for the lower deck. the lower deck can host three, four or five cabins, while the crew area, directly accessible from the external passages, has four cabins, and the garage hosts a 5m tender, plus one jet ski on each side. the new isa 141 super sportivo design reaches the peak of expression with fast, sleek lines, combined with classic and timeless styling, all integrated with the isa Yachts’ custom heritage.

Conceived as ‘a yacht inside a ship, because of its comfort qualities’, the revolutionary full custom design by Marco Casali boasts extralarge volumes, and hosts the largest ever beach area (200m2 on three levels), not to mention toy storage on the market. The hull (by Palumbo Group) is the result of a research vessel experience, designed to offer the best sea keeping and stability qualities in any weather condition worldwide, while the bow’s unique design, created for a perfect relationship with the sea, is reminiscent of the stylish, ancient weapon the boat is named after – ‘Tomahawk’.

he yacht’s complexity lies not only in her sheer size, but also in the qualities that make her a real performance sailing yacht. oceanco’s innovations and experience in building large custom power yachts in the 80m+ range, coupled with Vitters Shipyard’s vast experience in building large, high-performance sailing yachts, was the driving force in teaming up to manage such a complex project. capitalising on each other’s strengths, the teams broke boundaries with the size and the complexity of an extensive array of advanced systems. built under the project name p85, with owners’ representatives master yachts, naval architect tripp design and interior designers dölker + Voges, this magnificent sailing superyacht combines outstanding sailing performance and state-of-the-art technology and reliability with exceptional space, comfort and luxury – a combination rarely found on sailing yachts.
Stunning Interior interior designers robert Voges and felix dölker explain: “we worked closely with the owner’s wife. it really was her baby. She knows every corner, even the crew quarters.” the goal was to balance the essence of a small sailing yacht with motor yacht luxury. the interior design is contemporary and elegant, yet fresh and natural. the focus is on clear and logical lines, pure materials, simplicity and close attention to detail. wood and stainless steel are used liberally inside. these materials play an important role in reflecting the sailing character of the yacht, a specific request of the owner. Stainless steel is employed both practically and artfully. take the handrails, for instance, or the mizzenmast’s cladding in the middle of the lower deck guest corridor, which reflects light beautifully. this effect is replicated in the central stairway, where a polished stainless steel work of art next to the wheelchair-accessible elevator is shaped to mimic the look of a mast – a ‘wow-worthy’ custom piece commissioned from a German stainless steel manufacturer. this gleaming motif is carried forward in the high-gloss japanese lacquer headboards – each guest cabin sports its very own pop of colour – glass mosaic shower walls and palladium-leaf ceiling domes. natural woods, from the mutenye floors to light brushed-ash walls and teak planking, offset reflective surfaces.
Intimacy and Ultra-Comfort the yacht has a clean, high-volume superstructure designed to blur the boundaries between the social spaces inside and the outside deck areas, with long, clear sightlines throughout. the yacht is designed around a comfortably clear and modern interior, with

living areas distributed over four decks, for both social and private use. high-quality heinen & hopman hVac systems, including air conditioning/chilled water systems, a fresh-air system and mechanical ventilation (exhaust and supply) as well as a freeze and fridge combination and cold stores ensure ultracomfort. the interior designers highlight: “we also helped shape a layout that connects private and public areas efficiently and creates multipurpose spaces. this can be seen on the main deck, where the salon and aft deck living areas merge seamlessly, a central bar straddling the two spaces. the salon seating area is smaller than might be expected, but that is the point.” the owner contributes and elucidates: “we prefer numerous different and intimate spaces to palatial areas, as we like to emphasise conversation and the sharing of experiences on board. aquijo is about intimacy among family and friends and about being able to go anywhere with them.”

Leisure the aft deck is generous and there are dining areas inside and out – complete with gimballed tables. “these provide fantastic al fresco dining, even when the boat is heeling twenty degrees,” according to the owner. the guest cabin configuration can be changed, transforming suites into multiple cabins. on the lower deck, cabins have direct access to the beach club. the beach club and spa co-exist in perfect harmony, with a central spa pool – naturally illuminated by the glass floor of the main deck above – flanked by a lounge area to starboard and a sauna to port with views out to sea. “the sauna and steam bath are particularly useful after a sail in cold, wintry conditions,” the owner says. the entire area is teak-clad, with the interior theme carried through in the white u-shaped sofa and turquoise lacquered table to starboard. the original brief called for an aft engine room and a spa amidships, but moving the wellness area aft made the beach club a far more cohesive space. forward, meanwhile, had added benefits; it has negated the need for keel ballast and placed it much closer to the crew quarters.
A True Sailing Yacht The design and execution of all components of this 85m yacht ensure that guests and crew alike sail in safety and comfort. Given her design characteristics, she is as nimble and easy to handle as a yacht of smaller dimensions, proving that a super sailing yacht can have competitive sailing capabilities with relative ease of handling. As can be expected from both the naval architect and builders, this is a true sailing yacht, performing well at all points of sail and benefitting from exhaustive engineering and superior craftsmanship. Her 90m masts by Southern Spars are two of the tallest in the world, while her performance sail plan is set up to be safe, reliable and simple to handle. Aquijo carries a full set of ECsix carbon rigging by Future Fibres, built to handle more than 200t of load, while the mast base is able to withstand over 550t of compression. The unique steering system, developed by Vitters Shipyard, completes the sailing experience. By translating the hydrodynamic forces on the underwater rudder blades directly to the fly bridge steering wheels, this steering system provides the helmsman with immediate feedback, a feeling for the yacht. This ground-breaking sailing yacht pioneers new territory on many fronts. She will be an astonishing sight to behold as she sails the oceans of the world.
The aft deck provides fantastic al fresco dining, even when the boat is heeling twenty degrees.

Giant of the Seas Operating Out Of six shipyards that span bOth the Mediterranean and adriatic seas, the ever-increasing palumbo superyacht division is proving to be a titan of the refit sector.
P
alumbosy – the palumbo group refit and repair division – is a force to be reckoned with. springboarding off the group’s reputation for professionalism, which has been built and consolidated over the past 50 years, the yachting division continues to expand its infrastructure and further its reach throughout the new build and refit sector. having established a refit, conversion and superyacht construction facility in the commercial port of naples, a commercial shipyard in Messina (sicily) and two yards in Malta (a commercial refit yard and a superyacht repairs and refit facility), the group went on to acquire its tenerife shipyard in June 2016, and isa yachts’ ancona facilities in august 2016, turning palumbosy into the largest centre in the Mediterranean and in the atlantic for maintenance and refitting.
Application and Preparation palumbo began its activity in 1967 as a small carpentry, supporting the local market of ship repair. now the

group is divided into two major divisions: shipping (with facilities in Messina, naples, Malta and tenerife, and headquarters in Monaco) and yachting. the group’s take-over of the massive dry dock facilities in Malta in 2011 gave palumbosy a major foothold within the Mediterranean. the yard itself covers a total area of 270,000m2 (45,000m2 as superyacht area and other 225,000m2 as shipyard area), which includes two drydocks. Malta has been of strategic importance in the Mediterranean since seafarers began trading, and this tiny nation continues to punch well above its weight within the superyacht industry. Malta claims to have the largest yacht registry in europe, and the sixth largest in the world, but apart from its geographical location on the route between gibraltar and the suez Canal, Malta’s most enduring asset is its dry-docks.
Refit of the Future between 1813 and 1964, Malta was a british colony, and the dry-docks were originally built for the royal navy. in 2008 the palumbo group made a pitch to buy all six docks, running four of the largest for ship repair, and the remaining two purely for yachts. the bid was successful, and palumbo bought the docks as a job lot, including the supporting infrastructure. in addition

to the dry docks, the superyacht yard has 377m of deep-water quayside, and palumbo also invested eur 2 million in a floating dry-dock, to enable the quick lifting of vessels in transit for routine maintenance. additionally, although the original dockyard came with a forest of cranes, palumbo decided to add a few of its own, especially as some of the existing infrastructure was mechanically sound, but technically obsolete Just one company at the helm has made the moving of manpower and equipment between the various projects smoother, and it has been this business model of using local knowledge combined with overseas expertise that has guaranteed the continued success of the palumbo operation.

Heart of the Med the acquisition of the isa shipyard – which gave the refit giant an additional 50,000m2 of shipyard space – formed part of the group‘s rationalisation plan to dedicate a facility to new construction and major refitting, and significantly strengthened the growth and awareness of the palumbo group. in turn, the acquisition of the tenerife shipyard (Canary island, spain) represented an important step to further grow the presence of palumbosy outside of the Mediterranean basin in the maintenance, refitting, and offshore sectors. the Mediterranean is home to some of the world’s leading shipyards specialised in refit and repair, with the stretch of coastline between toulon and Marseilles being recognised as a hub for the refit and repair of superyachts. palumbo’s acquisition of the itM yard in Marseilles in 2014 significantly contributed to the group’s reported annual turnover of around eur 100 million. however, as the average size of newbuilds continues to expand and the existing superyacht fleet grows steadily older, the demand for refit and maintenance services will only increase in the future, putting the Mediterranean’s capacity and facilities under intense pressure. this only goes to exemplify why palumbo’s move on tenerife has been viewed as being so strategic.
the harbour, and to the projects in refit. renamed the yacht Club palumbo Msy, the three-storey building has retained its historic façade, but behind that it has all the trappings of a five-star hotel. “the first thing a prospective client will ask is how the crew will be accommodated, which is why we took the decision to build the on-site crew facility,” says simon Zammit, yard Manager of palumbosy Malta. “it also makes the refit far more efficient, as crew won’t get caught up in Malta’s notorious morning traffic jams if living off site. “highly efficient stabilisation, and dependable satellite communications are typical of some of the upgrades we undertake here,” Mr Zammit
continues. “We have a full-time staff of 40, but can draw on the huge workforce from the palumbo shipyard, or from the local network of trusted sub-contractors. We have also brought in expertise from our italian yards when necessary. nearly all this manpower is within the palumbo group, which helps us to closely control the costs.” “technically, the largest yacht we can handle on this site is 160m, but with red China dock also within the palumbo group, whoever builds the first 360m yacht can have her refitted by us in Malta,” Mr Zammit concludes.

he Barcelona refit shipyard mB92, one of the world’s largest refit, repair and maintenance facilities for luxury yachts, is celebrating 25 years at the top. Founded in 1992 with the vision to provide excellence in yacht refit, repair and maintenance, it quickly elevated its offer to cater to the growing global superyacht fleet, and today mB92 is one of the leading shipyards dedicated exclusively to superyachts. since its launch, mB92 has developed a network of world-class subcontractors to ensure clients are surrounded by the very best specialists in the industry, and new investment in facilities and equipment has further cemented the shipyard’s standing as one of the best of its kind in the world.
Continued Investment located in the port vell of Barcelona – a strategic stop-off point for yachts travelling between the mediterranean and the caribbean – mB92 has the experience to undertake any yacht refit operation from start to finish guaranteeing the highest level of quality (iso 9001, iso 14001, isps). as one of the largest

superyacht repair facilities around, servicing more than 100 superyachts per year with an average length of 70m, mB92 has made the most of its 25 years of activity in the superyacht industry. “at mB92 we are driven by a deep commitment to delivering excellence in quality and efficiency of services,” says mB92 ceo pepe García-aubert. “We have continually invested in our shipyard and in our people to meet the ever more demanding needs of the industry.”
Room for Growth mB92’s concessional area within the port of Barcelona (which was renewed for another 30 years in 2010) has grown since 1992 from 25,200 to 124,000m2 today. With both demand for refit services and the size of yachts increasing, mB92 is building for the future with a new shiplift and hardstanding area that will have capacity to dry-dock up to twelve vessels at a time, which is due for completion by the end of 2018. “the future for the superyacht refit market is bright, which is why
we are investing in a new 4,000t shiplift that will permit the drydocking of vessels up to 105m in length. this increased capacity will enable us to continue servicing the world’s best superyachts,” says aykut ozgulsun, deputy ceo.
Competitive Edge mB92 has 100 permanent employees and an average of over 900 indirect support service professionals that work as specialist subcontractors in every naval field, both locally and internationally. its 220m dry-dock enables it to syncrolift vessels up to 2,000t, while its docking repair quays boasts a berthing capacity of fourteen yachts up to a maximum of 220m in length, and with an additional 45 independent subcontractors available to develop and work on services in the shipyard, it’s little surprise that the spanish shipyard has plain sailed its way through the first 25 years of its existence.

ith such extensive projects in motion, meticulous planning and research are required to achieve a world-class finish. AkzoNobel has also been at the forefront of formulating new products to meet the changing demands of this sector. Hans slegtenhorst, segment manager for superyacht and pro at AkzoNobel, shares his expert insight into the art of coatings and why it’s vital not to cut corners.
Application and Preparation slegtenhorst explains: “taking time to properly apply a coating is critical to achieving high quality results; however, this can often be overlooked due to time pressures. when considering the application of coatings there are several stages and a number of key factors to take into account. firstly, the performance and durability of the system is heavily influenced by preparation, and in most cases this can take up to 90% of the total time needed to complete a job. “secondly, the sequence of products is critical. All products are designed with specific functions in mind (such as anticorrosive protection, ease of sanding, gloss) and skipping any steps can reduce the final appearance or performance of the system. the choice of consumables throughout the process also influences the outcome; everything from mixing cups through to abrasives, rollers, brushes and spray guns. “the above factors are ‘pre-application’, however, during application the common focus
is on (ambient) temperature but there are many other factors to consider. these include humidity, ventilation, product temperature and surface temperature, which is often exceptionally high due to direct sunlight. preparation time often includes a method of controlling these variables, such as localised heating/cooling, tenting and extraction. once all coating work has been completed, it is important to allow the system to fully cure before being put into full service to reduce the risk of premature deterioration. He continues: “Although there is always a way of completing something faster, when it comes to preparing and applying coatings, skipping steps or pushing products can reduce the appearance or the performance of the system. in the short term, this can produce satisfactory results, but can often lead to further work being required at a later date. keeping this in mind and following the process carefully means you will achieve the optimum result.”
Variety is Key the renowned superyacht coatings brand, Awlgrip has a huge selection of products available including the 545 epoxy primer, a multi-use product that can be used to seal filler primers and fairing work before applying topcoats. it benefits from fast overcoating times and is the ideal undercoat for all Awlgrip topcoats including Awlcraft se – solids & effects, a revolutionary topcoat encompassing solid, metallic and pearl finishes that is fast Hans Slegtenhorst, Segment Manager for Superyacht and Pro at AkzoNobel

drying with excellent opacity. Awlcraft SE is designed to work as one layer of a multi-part system. It imparts the colour and effect and is then topcoated with a clear high finish to give gloss and protection – resulting in a high performance, high shine robust topcoat system.
Trends for the future “Customers are increasingly looking for timesaving systems, by reducing the numbers of layers, alternative application methods or quicker over-coating intervals,” continues Slegtenhorst. “The fact that average yacht sizes have grown steadily in recent years encourages producers to come up with more flexible paint

systems. Increased awareness of the environment further stimulates technical advances moving towards more sustainable solutions, with a coatings system that is less solvent content with increased longevity. “Vinyl Film is a growing trend that has started to enter the yachting market and should not be ignored, as it’s a relatively new technology with a short track record in the superyacht sector,” he adds. “I expect this will take some time to grow, but it will become more important. This new technology could be used in several areas of the yacht; interiors, exteriors, moulded parts, and so on. AkzoNobel has a lot of experience within the field of film coatings, and the use of
this technology from one market into another could provide great opportunities for both manufacturers and boat owners alike.” AkzoNobel’s Awlgrip and International brands provide proven solutions that protect, beautify and reduce boat maintenance. The Awlgrip and International brands have established a worldclass reputation for excellence and meet the needs of customers who expect exceptional performance, durability and brilliant visual effects.

There is also a smaller chopper, for emergencies, to be craned from the helideck to sit on the extended forecastle deck. Rotor blades will be stored neatly in new foredeck lockers and both helicopters vacuum-wrapped to keep them pristine on crossings. Inside, she features a Balinese spa with sauna, a gym, jacuzzi, beauty salon and movie theatre. Not to mention the modern entertainment system, array of water sports toys and a medical suite. Legend began her adventures with charters in Antarctica in Christmas 2016. In 2017 she is due to travel South America and Greenland in spring, spend summer in the Baltic and then return to the frozen south for winter. The fact that she was originally built as a Class 1 icebreaker – not just Ice Class – giving her reasonable fuel efficiency and a safe and solid structure is of significance to Verkerk. “I have been able to create a vessel that can go anywhere in the world, but also provide the luxuries that have become standard in the superyacht industry,” he says.

Overcoming Obstacles In addition to a complete rebuild of the interior and technical installation, Verkerk was keen to incorporate softer lines without losing too much of her sturdy look. When Legend arrived at the Icon shipyard she had a canoe stern, a red hull and soft yellow super structure. Despite her structure being very safe and solid, drastic changes were undertaken to transform her into the adventure-seeking motor yacht that she is today.

the bulwarks were completely restyled to match the new stern, her 6.4m draught is nearly twice as deep as many yachts her length, and numerous painstaking structural ‘tweaks’ have been carried out to correct previous design indiscretions, which were picked up thanks to today’s 3d scanning technology. the large salons on the aft part of the ship were completely misaligned, which meant the aft side had to be raised by 250mm to correct the sheer line. Windows were misaligned or too low so it was hard to enjoy the views, stairs were uncomfortable to negotiate, decks had camber in the wrong direction, and bulwarks were very high.
Total Overhaul in addition, a huge tender amidships broke up the boat into a fore-ship and aft-ship. the solution was removing a massive secondary mast from this space, adding an extra deckhouse and extending the forecastle deck back to join more substantially with the aft deck. the connection of the fore and aft-ship made the boat whole again, symbolised by one long continuous strip of white painted onto the
discreet dark grey hull to give her length and appearance. by the end of the refit at icon, 100t of new steel and aluminium had been added. however, in addition to complying with the imo polar code that came into effect on 1 January 2017, which covers safety measures and environmental protections for yachts venturing into defined polar waters, legend also needed to be fully solas compliant, due to the fact she was to become a passenger ship. this turned out to be the most challenging part of all, and in the words of hans-maarten bais, creative director and naval architect at diana yacht design, who was responsible for the exterior design and engineering of the rebuild: “a ship built in 1973 was not designed for modern solas regulations… With a lot of creativity and help from specialists, we managed to get the job done and created one of the largest explorer yachts in the world with a full passenger ship certificate. We’re really proud of the final result.”

Bridging the Gap A new Age is dAwning whereby unified control centres used to operate multiple systems are now finding their way on board state-ofthe-art yachts.

n recent years, integrated bridge systems (ibs) for superyachts have advanced substantially in both usability and aesthetics, observes advanced marine electronics specialist Admarel b.V., an Alewijnse Marine company. the superyacht owners that they work with typically expect something that looks good, as well as ensures a safe and compliant cruising experience, but even for them this isn’t always easy. the sheer diversity of navigation, communications and control systems often means that even the latest bridges end up with a range of independent stations, each catering to a different system and each with its own operating manual and training requirements. with that in mind, the ultimate objective for Admarel and its fellow companies involved in superyacht electronics supply and integration has been to achieve what is already delivered by the automotive and aerospace sectors – a clean, unified look for a ‘control centre’ where
multiple systems deliver their data and control is achieved via a harmonised interface.
Pushing Boundaries At the start of 2017, the engineers at Admarel believe that their goal has finally been achieved with the arrival of the synapsis nX integrated navigation system (ins) from raytheon Anschütz. despite the name, the synapsis nX is about much more than just navigation. in fact it goes even beyond what most captains would regard as an ibs. this is a fully flexible it network that will receive and distribute data and commands from anywhere, and to anywhere, that is needed. not necessarily limited to just navigation, it embraces other ship’s systems too.
A Tailored Approach on the surface, for the captain, and for the style-conscious owner, it means a bridge with a

SPECIAL FEATURE
reduced number of identical displays together with a minimal series of physical controls. this can be laid out in any desired format, whereby each display can show any information from any sensor while controlling any navigational application. the control of auxiliary functions on the bridge – such as wipers, lights, and switches – can be moved from physical devices to touchscreen displays using the same graphic look and feel. Additional displays with the same, or restricted, capabilities can be fitted elsewhere in the yacht. this is achieved by centrally feeding all the sensor data into the system via lAn converters and making it available together with charts, radar, video and other feeds via a redundant lAn network. the key to the entire system is the software / applications that lie at its heart. these run on standardised marine Pcs that can be fitted anywhere on the yacht, typically in racks in the separate data centre; a nearby temperature and humidity-controlled area that is easily accessible. this keeps them in an ideal environment for such equipment, and by saving space allows the design of an open bridge layout.
One Large Step for Yachting raytheon Anschutz is the first manufacturer to have a digital KVM Matrix integrated with the ins. this is a huge step forward in giving the ibs flexibility to run any application on the main bridge displays. in addition to radar, it opens the possibility of showing all input available on board the yacht such as AMcs, bos, thermal cameras, dP, forward-looking sonar and so
much more, on any of the bridge displays. this centralised, software-first approach ensures consistent sensor data across every application and delivers intelligent central alert management including prioritisation and acknowledgement from task-related displays. it also introduces system-wide health monitoring including an automatic switch-over of critical functions, and multi-user and situational profile management. these features ensure a new standard of safety for superyachts and their owners.
A True Range of Benefits in addition to the seamless functionality, this network configuration brings a range of practical benefits. the design possibilities for the layout of a bridge are limitless, and the use of standardised components and modular software makes customisation and expansion straightforward. by having all the hardware located elsewhere in the data centre, the bridge installation is also greatly simplified. in addition, by distributing all the sensor data and status information via lAn to every workstation, this requires less cabling compared to conventional systems, as well as delivering enhanced flexibility. the synapsis nX represents the next stage in the evolution of integrated bridge systems with its seamless user interface, flexibility and usercentric approach. the benefits it delivers offer genuine gains in efficiency, safety and security afloat.

The Future of Design unveiled at boot Düsseldorf in January 2017 by france-based Kara technologies, the newly developed Kara is a connected table that has been adapted to fit the reduced space of a boat cockpit. Created by ivain bignonet, chief executive of Kara technologies, and first launched in 2015, Kara has been designed to serve as an item of furniture equipped with an upper plate made of safety glass to protect its multi-touch and multi-users screen. but it also employs capacitive technologies combined with software, which means it is sensitive to touch, but not to objects. its complex and leading-edge algorithms allow users to run their favourite applications while keeping their glass, plate, and papers on the table. Kara even works perfectly with wet fingers and gloves.

The company also welcomed several substantial new additions to its new construction and yacht management fleet and continued to book a recordbreaking number of superyacht charters. Founded on David Fraser’s passion for sailing and talent for selling, combined with his always fair and ethical approach, the company still holds his key attributes at the core of its business today, and which is part of the reason for its continued success.

Megafend Launches New Tear-Free Welded Fenders
Fraser Yachts and Triton Submarines have announced the sale of two new construction 1,000m Triton 3300/3 Submersibles. The submersibles are the sixth and seventh deliveries of this hull model from Triton’s Florida-based manufacturing facility, and the fifth and sixth Tritons constructed in the past twelve months. Triton Submarines is the most experienced civil submarine and submersible manufacturer in the world, as well as being the only contemporary manufacturer of transparent-hulled personal submersibles to deliver vessels capable of diving to 1,000m. The buyer is a long-standing repeat client of Fraser.
Fender specialist, Megafend, has launched a new type of polyurethane inflatable fenders that have superior abrasion resistance, UV resistance and significant tear strength. Made from a new-gen nylon fabric and equipped with neoprene covers, the new welded fenders are light-inweight, easily inflated, and easily stowed in minimal space. Using precise computer-cut panels and superior grade valve assemblies, the fenders are RF thermo-welded to shape, fusing overlaps into one piece for bonds stronger than the material itself.

OUTFITTERS PAGES Esthec Expands Onboard MotionSensing Horizons
More Marine Launches Superyacht Mooring Lines with Electronic Chip
Esthec’s Sensor Deck was unveiled in September 2016, and is a unique decking material that detects every motion on board, but since its launch, the ground-breaking design has been pushed beyond its initial boundaries to also serve as an alarm system, deck lighting, as well as help ship owners to save energy on board. Developed in close partnership with Sencorables, a company renowned for its unique and patented sensing technology, the Sensor Deck detects presence, movement and direction of people, meaning everything, from air conditioning to cabin lighting and heating, can be controlled by stepping on or off the deck.
Superyacht ropes distributor, More Marine, has developed and launched a new way of identifying mooring lines stored on board by embedding an NFC chip into the rope, which is then covered by protective carbon-epoxy. In a bid to help crew identify the age of mooring lines, as well as the diameter and breaking strength, the new chip enables crew to scan the rope by holding a smartphone up against it. In the event of a mooring line breaking or being defective, the chip now means the rope can be traced back to production, and all details can be recorded. i. www.moremarine.nl/ superyacht/

Designed and sized in harmony with other marine instruments on the helm it boasts advanced audio features specifically designed for marine applications. Managing Director, Paul Baker, says: “The demand for better quality marine audio systems like JL Audio means that on board entertainment now plays a major role in a boat’s electronics specification list so it makes sense that the products talk the same language as the multifunction display units.” i. www.jlaudiomarine.eu

WORD ON THE SEA
SuperYacht Industry’s Marco Geels
great start to 2017 I was once again fortunate enough this year to be included as one of the 242,000 visitors to the boot Düsseldorf show, which boasts a tremendous atmosphere and seventeen exhibition halls. Over the course of nine days, more than 1,800 exhibitors from 70 different countries showcased products, innovations and trends within the industry. I spent most of the day relishing my time in the halls dedicated to the superyacht industry, filled with enthusiastic visitors and exhibitors alike. I met with several members of the Deutsche Yachten association, such as Yachtlite, and viewed their quality, illuminating, three-dimensional letterings and logos that give any yacht that extra touch of elegance and radiant charisma.
evening programme was an experiential historical one, with a focus on the Viking Age. We visited the Gaiahallen where we sampled the local beer (Gaia) and viewed the Viking ship “Gaia”. This was proceeded with a venture into the woods for some outdoor activities (throwing axes and archery), dinner, beer, a performance by Stella Polaris, all neatly rounded off with coffee and dessert. The following day, after a much welcomed later start, we visited the Jotun Vindal factory before devouring lunch and heading home. Look out for a full article on Jotun in issue 2 of SuperYacht Industry.
