On the Cover Dutch shipyard Oceanco has been building world-class yachts since 1990. With large yacht facilities in Alblasserdam in the Netherlands, and expansive outfit facilities in Marineweg, it made the decision in 2005 to focus its efforts on creating custom yachts of 80m+ in length. The result has been a raft of high profile deliveries, culminating in the recent 110m Project Jubilee launched in Feb 2017, the largest yacht ever built in the Netherlands. news in brief Benetti Launches 67m Custom Superyacht Italian shipbuilder Benetti announced the launch of FB268 M/Y Seasense in April, a 67m full custom superyacht with a steel hull and an aluminium superstructure. Built for an experienced owner, the elegant exterior is by Dutch designer Cor D. Rover, while the naval architecture was carried out by Benetti’s in-house team. The interior layout incorporates six suites accommodating up to twelve guests, and features Los Angeles design studio AREA’s debut superyacht design. Fitted with two 1,380kW Caterpillar engines, Seasense has a top speed of 15.5 knots and a cruising speed of fifteen knots, and is scheduled for delivery at the end of July 2017.

120 Years of Shipbuilding for Couach French custom superyacht builder Couach celebrated the start of its 120th anniversary year in April with the completion of two landmark projects – the fifth unit of its 2300 Fly model, as well as delivery of the fullycustomised 4400 Project Fast Fly to her owner. The 2300 Fly remains one of Couach’s most popular models – a 23m fast-planing yacht featuring a composite hull, superstructure and flybridge. The 2305 Fly has been built for a first-time yacht owner, and features a great deal of customisation, particularly in relation to the general arrangement of the guest accommodation.

news in brief Hydromar Introduces Sliding Hinge Hull Door System

Palumbo Group Announces SYBAss Membership on 50th Anniversary

Dutch hydraulic equipment supplier Hydromar has developed a sliding hinge door system for the superyacht industry. Its main advantages include easy installation, and a clearer opening in the hull door to launch the tender. The sliding hinge system replaces the traditional C-hinges, and in combination with a Hydromar sliding beam this tender garage arrangement provides a high-quality solution with optimal clearance between door, hull and tender, preventing the garage door from hitting the rubrails or hull due to the rounded shape of the hull and the door.

Palumbo Group has proudly announced its official entry to the Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss). This important achievement marks the Group’s celebration of 50 years of activity. An international group with a strong family approach, it has grown to become a major player in the shipping industry and is building up its reputation and awareness in the luxury yacht world for both new build and refit-repair. “Being a member of SYBAss is a reward for our passion and determination, which characterised 50 years of activity, just as the attention and the high standards that we adhere to in the interests of both the industry and the environment,” says Giuseppe Palumbo, CEO of Palumbo Group.

Jotun’s yachting range came on to the market in 1959, and since then it has dominated the scene.

n a bid to address questions regarding how the eu biocidal Products regulation (eubPr) will affect the yachting industry, as well as more general information on optimising antifouling, current trends, the differences between yachting and marine antifouling, and new innovations such as Fouling release coatings, Jotun hosted an extensive and insightful press tour earlier this year in February. taking place at Jotun’s hometown of sandefjord in norway, the aim of the press tour was to open the doors of Jotun with “unlimited access to the expertise of the global leader of marine antifouling”. sandefjord is a city with a proud maritime heritage and remains strongly connected to today’s maritime business. with more than 90 years of experience in the protection of ships and property, Jotun retains both its headquarters and r&d centre in the historical town of sandefjord.

commencing with an antifouling presentation that looked at fouling protection, raw materials, performance, testing and eu-bPr (which covers all 28 eu member states, and includes 22 different biocidal product types), the floor then opened up for an open forum and Q&a session where lively debate ensued. the tour also included a trip to the Jotun r&d centre, where the latest innovations in paint and antifouling are being made, as well as a tour of the Jotun museum, and Jotun’s new factory. light-hearted evening entertainment came in the form of a humorous penguin event – a bird that has come to symbolise Jotun’s ‘Penguin

spirit’ and its four core values of loyalty, care, respect and boldness. now employing more than 9,800 people and invested in four key business segments, that include decorative paints, marine coatings, protective coatings and powder coatings, Jotun has grown to be a giant of the paint industry with a true global reach operating in 45 countries around the world. still a family run business, it boasts a eur 2 billion revenue, with no less than 37 production facilities.

Heritage at Heart Jotun’s yachting range came on to the market in 1959, and since then it has dominated the scene. its current r&d spend exceeds eur 25 million, with continued investment in its facilities, people, technology and innovations, and a new r&d centre scheduled for completion in 2019. its antifouling products reduce the amount of marine fouling, which then decreases frictional drag, and in turn reduces fuel consumption. Fuel accounts for 50% of total operating costs for ship owners, and significant reductions being made in fuel consumption are big news for both yacht owners and the environment. as the leading supplier of marine coatings, every fifth vessel in the world is protected by Jotun and partners. its antifouling r&d is driven by technical, environmental and economic factors, all of which benefits the yachting industry thanks to the breakthroughs being made.

escribed by denn as having “the stance of a large cat ready to pounce”, Maia’s exterior includes subtle design nods to the automotive industry, such as the ‘fisker whiskers’ of the aft fashion plates and contemporary navigation lights. with naval architecture and engineering undertaken in-house, Maia’s sporty appeal is accentuated by heesen’s traditional pelican bow, with its reversed sheer line. “Maia is a uniquely timeless design,” says denn. “curvy flowing forms and sharp knuckle lines create a widely appealing style that have an affinity with classic and contemporary iconic cars such as that have stood the test of time.”

Functional Design Maia sports no less than 250m2 of deck space arranged over three levels, made possible by wellpositioned tenders carried on the fore deck. her ample tender storage not only allows for the addition of a large jetski, but enables the tenders to be quickly deployed, and protected by a wavebreaker at the front of the tender storage to deflect splash. the functional wavebreaker is a design feature particularly favoured by denn, and is one which he ‘borrowed’ from the beautiful french 1932 liner ss Normandie. “functional ‘military style’ wheelhouse windows serve to reduce reflections, whilst a large roof overhang further offers the captain protection from sun and rain,” says denn. “wing control driving positions have overhead protection ‘wings’, which also provide optimum locations for the raised search light pods – all distinguishing design features driven by practicality.”

Alfresco Living outdoor enthusiasts are treated to a stunning 16m sun deck on which to truly spread out, leaving abundant room for her impressive design feature; a spacious beach club, complete with bar, sauna and pulsating sound system. an adaptable area dedicated to rest, with large windows and full height glass doors opening on to sea breeze by day, the bridge deck skylounge provides a more intimate setting by night, with “stained walnut architecture and soft lighting creating a more intimate, calm atmosphere once the sun sets,” says reymond langton’s jason Macaree. “the design intent was to create a yacht which could serve as a comfortable and elegant private yacht as well as accommodate charter guests if desired,” adds Macaree. “the result is a sleek, clean and thoroughly modern design weaved together with restraint and subtlety.

Calming, soft tones are combined with bespoke furniture that echoes the geometric elements of striking feature artwork. A thoughtful LED lighting concept washing the ceilings and walls in a warm glow creates an inviting atmosphere, as does the use of contrast between light, bleached oak and stained walnut. A subtle graphic motif runs throughout, punctuated with textured metal and feature fabrics.

Statement Features Accommodating up to ten guests in five staterooms, the main deck owner’s suite has a private office that leads to the generous full beam bedroom. The use of natural light is a continuous theme throughout the bright and airy interior, and the owner’s suite is adorned with large windows that provide panoramic views across the ocean. Bespoke furniture creates detail and contrast with ‘modern geometric designs complemented by subtle textures and finishes’, while the roomy owner’s suite bathroom features oak and limestone that contrasts with stained walnut and the Volga blue granite of the vanity. Four lower deck guest suites comprise three doubles and one twin, and are again light and airy, each with a unique colour theme created by fabrics and artworks. Mirroring Ann G’s rising stairwell with its dramatic, central chandelier, Maia’s guest accommodation opens on to a lobby defined by a striking feature artwork that leads to the main staircase. Rising through the yacht, and clad in walnut, it echoes other unique details within the yacht, with a geometric design in subtly contrasting leather panels.

the aft deck, and a dining table framed by a full height artwork on the forward wall. Crew accommodation is compact yet sufficient, allowing for ten crew in five cabins, as well as a well-appointed galley. Powered by two MTU 1,000 kW engines Maia will reach a respectable top speed of 15 knots, with a range of 3,800nm and a cruising speed of 12 knots. At 10 knots the fuel consumption will be 95 L/h and at maximum speed (15 knots) 390 L/h. Having just entered the outfitting period at Heesen’s shipyard in Oss, Maia will be available for delivery in 2018 after completing intensive sea trials in the North Sea.

Going Dutch A TALE OF UNITY

THE THREE PILLARS THAT ALL HISWA HOLLAND YACHTING GROUP MEMBERS HAVE IN COMMON ARE NAMELY HERITAGE, stability and creativity. At heart, they are stories of extraordinary people working at the yards and supply companies who make extraordinary yachts for extraordinary clients.

creative mind is required to want to buy a superyacht. Spending many millions on a floating home is not a logical act, regardless of how much pleasure it brings, and the business case for creating a one-off custom superyacht would probably not pass muster if subjected to ‘normal’ standards of production efficiency. But life isn’t all about business, and there are many wealthy men and women out there who like to be different, to think outside of the box, to own a superyacht that suits their tastes and travel plans, rather than those of the owners that went before them.

Heritage is Key The three pillars are one of the reasons why ‘going Dutch’ remains the best possible roadmap to follow once owners have made the emotional choice to buy a superyacht. The same applies to the captains, senior crew members, purchasing and project managers, and owners’ representatives who play such a key role in the decision-making process. Yards and marine equipment suppliers work hand-in-hand to come up with creative ideas in order to realise the aspirational dreams of clients and their representatives. And however future-oriented this creativity may be, the rich experience of the past certainly plays an equal role. It’s impossible to overestimate the importance of heritage to the Dutch superyacht cluster. Its international orientation in the maritime world dates back to the Golden Age of the 1600s when half of all Europe’s trade was transported by ships from the Netherlands. Boats of all shapes and sizes have been in the Dutch DNA since time immemorial. Many of today’s yards and supply companies can trace their roots back to the 19th century and it is

www.s u p e r y a c h t - i n dustr y.c om

HYG.indd 17

these generations of craftsmen that later enabled Holland to put superyachts on the world map.

Market Leaders There are, of course, challenges ahead for the Dutch cluster moving forward. A close eye needs to be kept on the global, billionaire market where size versus quality is key, warranties and after-sales service are becoming vital, and geo-political challenges need to be monitored and acted upon. Companies that choose wisely when focusing on a specific market segment and setting themselves apart from the rest are likely to be, or stay, market leaders of the future with a healthy portfolio. But no doubt the Dutch superyacht cluster will continue to lead the industry, not just today, but for many years to come.

Standing Together The International Council of Marine Industry Associations – ICOMIA – brings together national boating federations in one global organisation and represents them at an international level, presenting a strong and united voice when dealing with issues challenging the industry. ICOMIA was formed in 1966 by founding members representing the USA, UK, France, Sweden and the Netherlands. Half a century on it still has a special relationship with the Netherlands – and today the association has six Dutch members, including: De Koning Marine Service BV; Huisfit (Royal Huisman); RAI Amsterdam (METSTRADE – Marine Equipment Trade Show); SIA – Abrasives Industries AG, and the national Dutch trade association, HISWA Holland Marine Industry.

However, established in 1932, HISWA is the only organisation representing all sectors in the Dutch recreational marine industry.

Everything Begins with Passion MarQuip, a comparatively young company, was founded in 2001 to design and supply exhaust systems specifically for the luxury yacht sector – both sailing and motor yachts. Jeroen van der Matten was hired in 2005, and Dennis Bravenboer joined the company in 2007. The company is widely recognised as a global leader in underwater exhaust outlets and water-cooled exhaust systems. “We are two young and enthusiastic general managers with a sincere passion for MarQuip and the solutions we produce,” says Dennis Bravenboer. “Jeroen is an experienced naval architect with shipbuilding in his blood, and like me, he’s a family man who loves to spend his spare time on his own sailboat with his loved ones. We know how important teamwork is at home, and we try to deploy many of the same principles in business.

1 8 | S Y I 2 0 1 7 | Volum e 12 | Issue 2

HYG.indd 18

“What drives us at MarQuip is a flair for interaction – with yacht builders, owners, management companies, captains and crew,” he adds. “The purpose is to improve the quality of the exhaust systems on board and consequently comfort of the yachts. This interaction again sees us all pitching in together as a team to achieve the best results. We also have a profound understanding of the individual, and often highly original desires of our clients. This is paramount to success in the superyacht industry, as such quirky requests drive innovation, which in turn is a key component of our own motivation.”

Potential is Inspiration For Kees Groen, project manager at Van Berge Henegouwen (VBH), the relentless pace of change in Audio Visual/IT technology ensures that every day brings something new. Keeping up with the latest developments is a never-ending race, but the pace of innovation both within VBH and in the outside world is exhilarating, delivering new challenges every day.

“For VBH as the technology partner, it is vital to be fully aware of what’s new and what’s coming,” says Kees Groen. “As a team, we’re always exchanging information and ideas via things like knowledge cafés: everyone gets together after work to eat pizza, discuss new technology developments and see how we can implement them on yachts. “We not only specialise in audio visual and IT, but also in lighting, security and bespoke installations that merge art and technology,” he adds. “It’s both exciting and inspirational to see the different technical disciplines within VBH working together to realise a project. The potential of what can be achieved is always growing, and to anticipate the future we need to be flexible and agile and keep thinking ahead. Combining the very latest in technology with the beauty and craftsmanship of the world’s finest yachts is something of which I never tire.”

and the option to professionally operate the ‘shipping company function’ were some of the goals involved. The concept behind CCV was to encompass more than new builds alone, as well as to develop a North-West European superyacht route which could serve as an alternative to sailing regions such as the Mediterranean. The superyacht market is changing rapidly and an idea that seemed a little ahead of its time in 2008 may now be a good option. “New clients are demanding certainty in every field, and the industry will have to provide reliability, hard guarantees, high resale values and transparency. That is why we are re-launching one-stop shopping under the Dutch flag. And this time we do so with the full support of the Dutch government, which embraced CCV as both an ambition and opportunity in its broad National Maritime Strategy last year and will implement this decision in the years to come.”

Commercial Cruising Vessel Project

What the Dutch Flag Offers

HISWA Holland Marine Industry originally developed the Commercial Cruising Vessel Project (CCV) in 2007. This confirmed that the Netherlands had built up an excellent position in superyacht new builds due not only to its renowned quality and innovative capacity, but also a unique cooperation in the chain of shipyards, suppliers, naval architects and research institutes. “Their success was based upon a blend of individuality and daring,” says André Vink, Director of Strategy and External Affairs at HISWA Holland Marine Industry. “One which was neatly summarised by Wolter Huisman’s (legendary CEO of Royal Huisman Shipyard) 1970s slogan: ‘If you can dream it, we can build it’.” “But is it sufficient to keep focusing on new builds without giving the service industry involved in these highly complex yachts the attention it deserves?” asks Vink. “Shouldn’t we put more emphasis on the highly lucrative refit market? Or increase our focus on the client, transparency in operational management and fiscal conditions of the flag under which yachts sail? And how about the quality of the crew, and the established positions of brokers, designers, yacht managers and owners’ representatives?” HISWA launched the CCV project ten years ago to provide an alternative for parties outside of the Netherlands who contributed to the superyacht industry. Masters of Refit From superstructure sections to hulls, Balk shipyard continues to go from strength to strength as it not only announces the launch of project gisele for this spring, but unites forces with fellow dutch maritime titan, Werf ’t kromhout.

A

s one of the world’s leading refit specialists, with over 200 years of experience at its core, Balk shipyard boasts a solid foundation within the dutch marine industry. delivering yachts such as caryali, which was lengthened during refit by two metres, seven sins, which received a completely new 15m bow section, and luxury tug boat and ice-breaker, lars, the yard has more than proved its expertise. a family business since its establishment in 1798, Balk shipyard has now announced a unique partnership with Werf ’t kromhout – an extraordinary opportunity that will surely strengthen and expand their network within the business.

Two Become One the brand awareness surrounding Werf ’t kromhout is down to its rich history as a

shipyard in the middle of amsterdam, as well as the renowned kromhout engines. add to this the increased promotion awarded to the yard during the seventies after dick van amerongen took over, and its credentials as a pioneer are undeniable. With controversial projects such as the Voc replica amsterdam, built for the national maritime museum in amsterdam, and the Voc replica prins Willem, built for an openair museum in holland Village, nagasaki, Japan, van amerongen took the yard to the next level. Balk shipyard, meanwhile, has been focused on building, repairing and maintaining wooden vessels and pleasure crafts in the picturesque town of elburg for decades. daan Balk has been at the helm as the seventh generation of the family business since 1998, and in 2004, following sustained growth, Balk shipyard moved to a bigger location in the harbour of urk.

Expansion Plans in 2016, Balk shipyard flexed its muscles and acquired Jachtwerf Bloemsma from former claasen owner Jan hart. Based in the dutch village of makkum, Bloemsma was best known for its work on aluminium hulls, such as 24.31m motor yacht griffioen and the 40.75m ed dubois-designed sailing yacht Valquest. throughout the years, Balk’s focus has been on repairing and maintaining pleasure crafts, but the acquisition of Bloemsma gave the yard the added opportunity to focus on the new build and refit of luxury yachts up to 60m.

Full Service Package to date, Balk shipyard has three main departments; refit, construction and slipway, but the repair and maintenance of commercial vessels, fishing boats and tall ships has also remained a significant part of its current activities. With the added benefit of raymond grollé’s (ceo and owner of Werf ’t kromhout) focus on maintenance, and summer and winter storage of a wide variety of boats and pleasure crafts in the amsterdam area, the two dutch yards can now join forces and share both their rich history, skills and knowledge, with the goal of offering clientele a full-service package.

Sign of the Times in april 2017, Balk shipyard announced the launch of 31m world cruiser project gisele. pitched as a rebuild, which saw the yacht stripped down to her bare casco, extended by

A Raft of Launches far from being a long-awaited launch, oceanco’s jubilee followed in the footsteps of a number of other high profile launches. in november 2016, at the fort lauderdale international boat show, oceanco revealed its 102m Project spectrum, conceived by nauta design and oceanco to encompass a broad range of possibilities, both in terms of her propulsion system and her living spaces. extensive investment in research and development produced a refined hull shape which, when coupled with its hybrid propulsion system enables spectrum to cruise in a variety of efficient modes. she maintains sleek, streamlined lines, which allows lower resistance through the water, and her layout over five decks provides a gamut of flexibility. a close relationship to the sea permeates throughout the yacht, with a seamless flow from outdoor deck spaces to the interior. large windows and extensive balconies help bring the outside atmosphere into the interior, while the

Future Opportunities oceanco’s 120m private yacht concept, amara, was designed in collaboration with sam sorgiovanni designs and unveiled at the dubai international boat show in february 2017. a ‘resort’ yacht, designed for extended families and friends, amara provides unparalleled living and entertainment facilities for up to 20 guests. the contemporary interior with natural timber, stone and textural carpets and fabrics blend to create an inviting and natural environment. “in designing the exterior lines of amara, i wanted to portray a very strong and muscular form that was progressive in design but with a timeless appeal,” says australia-based designer sorgiovanni. its long bow accentuates the vessel’s generous

proportions, while the lower level deck opens to reveal an expansive beach club resort that offers three-way access to the sea; port, starboard and aft. also on this deck is a comprehensive wellness area with banya, hammam, beauty treatment lounge and a cinema experience for sixteen people. a waterfall from the upper deck cascades down into the main deck swimming pool, and the main deck features a stunning pool bar, opening balconies and large entertainment areas. an outstanding owner’s apartment with a private plunge pool and open-air aft deck dining for up to 20 people is located on the upper deck. delivering on design, safety, privacy and tranquillity, amara reflects oceanco’s applied evolutionary thinking, and hints at the triumphs set to be launched in future by this iconic dutch shipbuilder.

he purchase of a yacht is a highly personal experience. Whether a fully custom build or taking ownership near completion, Heesen Yachts has been providing its clients with unbeatable service, year after year. The launch of its latest initiative, Heesen Yacht Services, is hoped to further improve on the ownership experience for its discerning clients by enhancing the reliability, operation and longterm value of their yachts. Taking a proactive stance, Heesen Yacht Services is reaching out to owners, captains and senior crew with the aim of enhancing their customer experience, improving operational reliability, and protecting the value of their yacht, and all to be achieved by four departments: Heesen Yacht Management; Heesen Original Spare Parts; Heesen Refit; and Heesen Academy. “The aim is to provide full-cycle assistance and services, not only so the yachts can be maintained in peak condition, but also to generate feedback that will help us to introduce further innovations and improvements in the future,” says Heesen Fleet Service Manager, Inno Gunsing.

Providing cost-effective, transparent and dedicated support, Heesen Yacht Management can oversee the complete range of operational, technical, financial and compliance requirements from insurance, accounting and manning to maintenance reviews, refits and safety management. The result is that operational reliability is improved and the value of the yacht is maintained.

Peace of Mind

Maintaining an Asset

By focusing on efficiency and excellence, the Heesen Yacht Management service offers owners significant advantages, including guaranteed quality service, highly trained crews, stable suppliers and, of course, peace of mind. Captains and crew can rely on the shipyard’s technical knowledge, dedicated crew training, operational management, and assistance and quality control during refit and maintenance. In collaboration with Jansen Maritime Services founded by Franc Jansen and based in the South of France, Heesen Yachts is offering full management services to its luxury fleet. It is a unique combination of management experience paired with in-depth yard knowledge that sets the service apart, enabling refit and renewal programmes to be developed together, ongoing maintenance to be checked and monitored, as well as technical breakdowns to be resolved more quickly thanks to readily available expert technicians and spare parts.

The aim of the Heesen Refit service is to ensure that Dutch quality standards are maintained throughout the lifecycle of the yacht. By combining the shipyard’s extensive resources, Heesen is in a solid position to advise and manage the refit, repair or renewal process to ensure the best outcome. Furthermore Heesen’s ‘flying squad’ of technicians is ready to travel at a moment’s notice to any location in the world. “It doesn’t matter if it’s an interior, exterior or engineering refit, it needs to be done to the best quality standards,” says Gunsing. “The advantage for owners is that the Heesen Yacht Services programme allows them to build up a solid service record, which can only help to maintain the reliability, quality and value of an expensive asset.”

Quality Assured In a bid to avoid downtime for owners, and to guarantee prompt assistance, Heesen’s Original Spare Parts service means that captains and engineers can rest assured that high-quality, warranty-protected and competitively priced components arrive on time ready for speedy installation. From fan coils to shaft bearings or propellers, Heesen Yachts believes that efficient installation of original, high quality components is the best way to ensure operational reliability and avoid niggling technical failures. Of particular relevance to owners is that using original spare parts also helps to maintain the resale value of a yacht over time.

alf a century of continued quality improvements to its products and organisation is what has taken kuiper holland to the top of its field in holland, with a fine reputation among interior builders and yacht builders. But in addition to quality, it is the brand’s reputation for being reliable, flexible and committed, resulting in fast and accurate delivery schedules, smooth logistics and a keen eye for problem solving, that has enabled it to be at the top of its game. hans golbach, director of kuiper holland, says he is aware that making panels isn’t “very sexy”, but that he thinks it’s the most “wonderful thing in the world”; “We produce and supply surfaces for various uses that are guaranteed to be perfectly flat. this requires an awesome amount of technology, craftsmanship and innovation, and that is exciting!”

SPECIAL FEATURE EVENT

Using Yachts for Environmental Purpose Thanks To a hosT of generous yachT owners who are willing To donaTe Their Time and vessels, the international seakeepers society is making great strides within the fields of marine science, ocean education, and outreach programmes. Photo courtesy of international seakeepers

T

he international seakeepers society enables the yachting community to take full advantage of their unique potential to advance marine sciences and to raise awareness about global ocean issues through the discovery yachts Program – the foremost initiative in accomplishing the society’s mission of promoting oceanographic research, conservation, and education through direct involvement with the yachting community. The program entails engaging vessels to participate in scientist-led expeditions, instrument deployments, and education and outreach events. seakeepers collaborates with numerous organisations, academic institutions, and government agencies to accomplish its discovery yacht missions.

Scientist-Led Expeditions scientific expeditions provide yacht owners, guests and crew the opportunity to participate in ongoing research while engaging with influential, well-known marine scientists. The largest expense, and often limiting factor in ocean research, is access to an ‘at-sea’ research platform. using member yachts, seakeepers works with experts in the marine science and oceanography fields to promote and facilitate groundbreaking research. each scientific expedition is unique and is organised with both the science and yacht in mind.

Intern Seakeepers.indd 35

Instrument Deployments seakeepers works with a number of institutions, including the national oceanic and atmospheric administration (noaa), world meteorological organization (wmo), florida international university’s global finPrint, and argo, to make ongoing oceanographic measurements. The collection of consistent and accurate data is extremely important for oil spills and marine debris accumulation analyses, weather and hurricane prediction models, quality control tests on satellites, as well as an overall better understanding of the marine environment. it is vital that the global instrument arrays are well distributed, and private vessels achieve this along routes that are not typically travelled. currently, seakeepers employs the use of three types of devices – seakeepers drifters, Bruvs (baited remote underwater videos), and argo floats. These instruments have been designed to be scientifically productive and efficient while minimally invasive to the environment.

Education and Outreach seakeepers supports outreach by inviting children and groups of educators aboard discovery yachts for educational experiences that focus on marine science. its outreach expeditions have focused on marine wildlife, drifter deployments, plastic pollution, sustainability practices, and more. seakeepers’

staff work closely with the yacht owner to determine what type of outreach is suitable, and with what group will be most appropriate. They also work closely with willing yacht owners and crew to coordinate research and outreach activities that reflect the yacht owner’s oceanrelated interests. The degree of participation can vary from an afternoon outreach trip with children, to a ten-minute instrument deployment while en route to the next port, and even to week-long expeditions with a team of expert researchers. vessel owners who generously donate time on their yachts to the seakeepers discovery yachts Program may qualify for tax benefits to the extent of the law and will be honoured at seakeepers events, featured on the seakeepers website, and recognised for their research and conservation efforts in the seakeepers newsletter.

ijssen Elektro’s multidisciplinary provision of services extends from state-of-the-art audio/ video and navigation and communications, to complex ship installations and ingenious data networks. Each year Tijssen Elektro creates dozens of projects that are complex, demanding and custom made. Over the past couple of decades, Tijssen Elektro has managed to build a strong relationship with shipbuilder and neighbour Heesen Yachts, having already been involved in more than 90 projects. Initially the collaboration mostly involved e-installation and the Alarm and Monitoring system (MPA), but in the past decade, Tijssen Elektro has also been involved with other disciplines, such as NavCom and audio/video resulting in a strong proposition.

“Professional, efficient, committed, accurate and with remarkable attention to detail: just some words that come to my mind when I think of their work ethic,” says Sara Gioanola, PR & Press Office Manager at Heesen. “Tijssen Elektro has been one of our electrical suppliers since our inception. They constantly prove to be a reliable partner, and are an integral part of our success. With modesty and ingenuity, they make each project a great success.”

Revolutionary Design Alida is a striking 55m fast displacement yacht, and the sister yacht to Azamanta – another project by Tijssen Elektro. The design is so revolutionary that it’s free of pillars thereby allowing for unlimited panoramic ocean views.

This is complemented by a 110sqm sun deck with a sky lounge that is covered fully in glass. Tijssen Elektro is responsible for the E-installation, MPA system and NavCom equipment. There is a lot involved with the installation and delivery of a complete package of NavCom equipment. From communication equipment (VHF, V-SAT system, MF/HF system, Fleet Broad band, etc.) to navigation equipment (Radar, ECS system, GPS, AIS system, instruments, etc.) to the network installation. All NavCom equipment is installed at several spots throughout the yacht: the main bridge, on the dashboard, the captain’s cabin, officer cabin and crew mess. A special feature of Alida is the FLIR Multisensor marine thermal night vision camera, with

Turnkey Projects Motor yacht Amore Mio is a great example of a successful turnkey project at Heesen Yachts. Captain Tripp Hock of Amore Mio explains: “Having a single subcontractor for handling the E-installation, the NavCom installation and entertainment installation, made the process seamless both in construction and after sales support.” Captain Hock was also highly impressed with the MPA system, adding: “It’s really great seeing the leaps and bounds made by the monitoring systems in the past decade – with a slick, grey, almost ‘iMPA’ feel to it – the ability to control and monitor the boat via these intuitive tools are clearly a captain’s best friend.” The latest projects Tijssen Elektro has been working on for Heesen Yachts are 55m Alida, 50m Home and 47m Ruya. Alida and Home are scheduled to be delivered in the summer of 2017.

video tracking. This camera makes it possible to recognise marine traffic and key landmarks at night, and includes a combination of thermal detection and visible identification and operators that can precisely locate and track objects. It contributes to onboard safety and keeps potentially dangerous targets in view at all times.

World’s First Motor yacht Home is the world’s first fast displacement yacht equipped with hybrid propulsion. She is not only an ultra-efficient, low fuel-burning yacht, but also one of the quietest on the oceans, offering the ultimate lluxury – a silent cruise. Tijssen Elektro is responsible for the delivery and installation of the NavCom equipment. This particular yacht contains plenty of extra features when it comes to NavCom: Home is, in addition to the ‘standard’ package, equipped with an extra V-Sat, a forward looking and Chirp sounder, a forward dual ECdIS, and an underwater camera.

New Styled Vessels Ruya is a 47m steel displacement yacht, which, rather uniquely, Heesen Yachts launched a Facebook campaign for to find a project name for her. Ruya is one of the newly styled vessels in the award-winning 47m class, a breed of Heesens that are icons of classic contemporary yacht design. On this beautiful sister ship to motor yachts Lady Petra and Elena (both of

which are also collaborations between Heesen and Tijssen Elektro) Tijssen Elektro was responsible for the E-installation and MPA system.

Security on Board Security on board is becoming increasingly important. Tijssen Elektro continuously follows developments on this subject, and ensures that all onboard systems delivered and installed operate at a high level according to the latest safety standards. Tijssen Elektro’s MPA system makes it possible to closely monitor the yacht’s performance, safety and control over almost all the electrical systems. With input from captains and engineers, the MPA alarm and monitoring system is continuously being upgraded and improved.

Maritime Personal Assistant Last year, Tijssen Elektro was on track to deliver its 150th MPA system, and this year it realised its 150th successful installation on board Alida. With more than 300 projects in its portfolio, this huge milestone means that around 50% of Tijssen Elektro’s delivered yachts have been equipped with its MPA system. The MPA system was launched in 2001. Over time, the MPA system has experienced tremendous growth, on both a hardware and software level. At first MPA was a clever tool to monitor a yacht but today it is indispensable,

and yachts simply cannot operate without such a system.

In Control at Sea All the audio/video systems supplied and installed by Tijssen Elektro are custom-built. Integrated AV with iPad control, and light management and room control are the most popular options. Most yacht owners now use AV on-demand to watch a film or listen to music, with the added option of streaming TV. This requires connectivity at sea or connectivity at the marina (or surrounding area), but in any case, bandwidth is required to stream effectively. It’s fair to say that the navigation and communication, and audio/video are strongly connected to one another: they work closely together and have been successfully applied at different yards over the past couple of years.

Other Striking Projects Tijssen Elektro has also been involved with other leading yards in the Netherlands and abroad. Last year, they worked on several different projects, including motor yacht Bijoux at Moonen Shipyards, sailing yachts Ngoni at Royal Huisman, unfurled at Vitters Shipyard, and Baltic 175 Pink Gin VI at Baltic Yachts, and various Sunseeker yachts. It has also realised a number of refit projects.

stablished in 1961, Vripack is a leading dutch yacht design, naval architecture and engineering studio renowned for its high-quality yachts. with over 7,000 projects in its portfolio to date, Vripack has made a name for itself for skilfully balancing functionality, aesthetics, and individuality for its discerning owners. now the holistic design firm has partnered with turkish shipyard evadne, and project management company tufan and Brothers Yachting to create a modern, fast explorer motor yacht, 24m rock, for astute owner, ali sayakci. “when i began to ideate the m/Y rock concept, my utmost concern was how to make a sturdy and rugged yacht with sex appeal,” says mr sayakci. “many of the practised explorer concepts did not meet the aesthetic and technical criteria i was looking for. their designer robin de Vries of Vripack introduced us to the concept of an suV yacht and it was love at first sight.

Deceptively Spacious the uniquely lined vessel is under construction at the evadne yard. Her fast displacement hull

will allow for speeds of up to 16 knots with two cat c12 engines at 1,000hp, and at 12 knots she still boasts a transatlantic range of 3,000nm. estimated to be launched in 2018, she is already noted for her spacious interior volume, as well as angler 3d shapes made in maple Bush wood that contrast with soft tactile couches. “on board, the family will always be facing the sea, that’s how we designed her,” says designer robin de Vries. “although a rather open plan layout, the routing and furniture is placed more like a modern loft than traditional yacht.”

Compact Superiority “we kept her length in a fashion to be able to get in virgin areas of mediterranean. rock has a high straight bow to intercept rough seas and low aft to be close to sea as some sea gurus prefer,” says owner sayakci. “[in the] last few decades mega yachts went into an adolescent race of length. while they’re providing more space and comfort, at the same time they probably are alienating the passengers from a connection to the sea and nature. for me,

Vripack managed to pack a superyacht comfort and floor space in a moderate size while achieving an impressive speed.” accommodation is for eight guests split between four cabins, including an owner’s cabin, a Vip suite and two twin rooms, while the crew quarters allows for a staff of up to four people. de Vries added that marble is one of the key materials on board, with the masculinity of the stone creating a sense of balance with the feminine exterior lines. other superyacht projects currently under development at Vripack include the 47m jongert yacht project revolution, which is also due to hit the water in 2018.

o be honest, we are not yet completely settled,” Mr Van der Jagt admits. “We still have to move quite a lot of things, but nevertheless we are already very satisfied with our new home. Everything is brand new and well-organised and with everything under one roof for development, design, construction and storage, we are capable of meeting customers’ requests in a more efficient way. In fact, our new location represents the values we stand for,” he adds. “Quality, service,

innovation and sustainability are the things that motivate us and when establishing the requirements for this new working place, we kept these core values very much in mind.”

Pressurised Bubbles a comfortable stay on board is one important criteria in superyacht building and to this end, Veth propulsion is continuously looking to improve their thrusters. a recent example is active noise suppression (ans) by means of air injection for tunnel thrusters. cavitation bubbles, caused by the rotation of the propeller, implode, causing noise and damage inside the tunnel. by injecting air into the tunnel in front of the propeller’s direction of flow, pressurised bubbles carry these cavitation bubbles off before they implode. depending on the model of the thruster, the speed of the propeller and the construction of the vessel, noise reduction of up to 15db can be realised this way.

The Desired Result Mr Ebbers explains: “any vessel that accommodates people – crew and passengers – will profit from this noise reduction, making staying on board more pleasant. Therefore the system is perfect for superyachts.” The injection solution sounds simple but the concept only works well with the right quantity of pressurised bubbles. Too few bubbles will not give the result desired, and too many will negatively influence the propulsion. “after several tests in our factory and also on our own testing vessel, we

managed to resolve this issue in an appropriate way,” he says.

Looks that Suit When it comes to looks, Veth propulsion is well known for their generator sets. “on board a superyacht, there are various standards that need to be considered,” Mr Ebbers explains. “It is not just a matter of supplying a generator set that does the job in the right way for thousands of safe and reliable operating hours; customers also ask for a set with a design that suits the yacht on which it is installed. apart from this, we are also constantly looking further for future proven solutions such as our generators that already meet Tier 3 standards. We always love the challenge of coming up with new ideas and meeting the requests of our superyacht customers.”

Harsh Circumstances “Throughout the years, we have been, and are still, working for companies such as oceanco, Van lent and amels,” Mr Ebbers concludes. “The nice thing is,” Mr Van der Jagt adds, “that for our superyacht customers, it is a comforting thought that the reliability of our products has been proven by the many operating hours in harsh circumstances on all types of working boats. I can’t think of a better way to show the quality of our products.”

Driving Innovation in ProPulsion FoUNDED IN 1968, AND opERATINg FRoM ITs DEDICATED HEAD oFFICE AND pRoDUCTIoN FACIlITy IN Western Australia, VEEM ltd is a leader in the field of high technology manufacturing of marine propulsion and stabilisation systems.

S

upplying critical components to the Royal Australian Navy, and manufacturing technically intensive, large stabilisation hydrofoils for superyachts, commercial vessels and fast ferries, VEEM has also revolutionised fixed pitch propeller technology for boats and yachts with their Interceptor propellers. This allows the effective pitch to be altered at any time by a diver, in a matter of minutes, without slipping the vessel.

Pushing Boundaries The VEEM propeller range is designed and manufactured with precision and perfection, delivering exceptional performance every time.

Veem.indd 48

Having pushed the boundaries of propeller manufacturing innovation for decades, VEEM consistently aims for higher speeds, better fuel economy, and lower noise and vibration – in turn, driving advances within the marine propulsion market. By redefining the limitations of pattern molding to produce high performance propulsion systems, VEEM has become the leading brand within the marine propulsion industry around the world. Using advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software together with patternless molding, VEEM can warrant propeller performance of every vessel and guarantee

VEEM gyros offer a genuine step change in performance compared to existing systems. absolute repeatability every time. In addition to achieving speeds in excess of 50 knots, VEEM’s innovative patternless molding techniques enable its team of propulsion design specialists to specify exactly what the vessel needs to meet its specific performance requirements. This means every VEEM propeller is custom designed without manufacturing constraint. These bespoke designs are further supported by decades of real-world experience, in-house CFD and FEA software, and a firstclass team of highly qualified and experienced designers.

Manufactured to Perfection The benefit of VEEM’s truly bespoke integrated design and manufacturing process is that performance and efficiency is always optimised for the specific application. Its propellers are 100% machined by 5-axis CNC machinery to hair thickness accuracy over every square inch, including the boss and high BAR overlapping blade propellers. Each one is S-class as a minimum, while the blades are lustre polished to maximise propulsive efficiency. This level of accuracy means that identical propellers are produced every time, therefore guaranteeing propellers that are perfectly balanced from side to side.

The Era of Stabilisers The same set of VEEM propellers can be optimised for long-range cruising or for flat-out speed, according to the owner’s requirement, but equally as important is the ability to enjoy being aboard while at anchor. Wave motion is one of the few external forces that has the capacity to negatively impact time on board, regardless of the size of vessel, and even the most sheltered harbours can suffer from unpleasant wave induced motion, causing discomfort and seasickness in many. Following six years of research and development, VEEM now offers is clients significant improvements in roll stabilisation thanks to the launch of its VEEM Gyros. The new range offers a genuine step change in performance compared to existing systems and was neatly exemplified when 42.5m aluminium motor yacht Tango, built in 2006 by Oceanfast

Yachts in Western Australia, was fitted with VEEM Profile 1 gyro installation in November 2016. Originally built with traditional Naiad fins, the rolling motion caused by transverse waves proved to be particularly problematic for Tango. Gyro commissioning and sea trials were carried out in the yacht’s normal operating environment of Sydney Harbour, after which several specific improvements in the yacht were noted. These included a more stable swim platform making guest transfer from the tender faster and more comfortable, reduced sloshing in the fore deck pool, and a general reduction in rolling motions making the onboard experience more comfortable. Tango is now reported to be reviewing options for widening its operational area due to the improved comfort in waves.

i. veem.com.au

Combined Understanding VEEM is also one of the only propeller manufacturers in the world that undertakes metal alloying in-house, guaranteeing that all materials are of the highest quality, and diminishing the effects of cavitation on the blades which can hinder performance. It is VEEM’s combined understanding of hydrodynamic design and analysis, advanced foundry methods, machine programming, and integrated design and manufacturing processes that results in its propellers being faster, smoother, more efficient, and able to be effectively re-pitched without lifting the vessel. Its evolution in propeller technology extends propeller performance into applications previously dominated by water-jets, and is a feature of VEEM propellers that is becoming more and more important as engine manufacturers increase power density and shipyards optimise hull designs.

T

he fruit of extensive research by Zuccon International project, heritage is a highly innovative yacht, with several features that put it in an unconventional niche, both as a classic expedition yacht and a support vessel for perini navi superyachts. translating many style features developed over the years by gilgenast embracing his characteristic style, but interpreting it from a contemporary perspective, its layout leaves most of the main deck free to accommodate two tenders - a nine-meter tender and a sailing boat of the same length in the bow area of the main deck, plus two jet skis. heritage, therefore, acts as a transportation platform, responding to a growing demand from owners and guests for more toys on board. the distinctive interior cross-section has been designed with a floor to ceiling height of three meters on the main deck, as well as an extensive use of glass that further simplifies the relationship with the outside world and merges seamlessly into the interior space.

Dual Purpose Design A dual function motor yacht that can be used both as a classic expedition yacht and as a support vessel for superyachts, its dual purpose defines its design language. the designer has worked to recall the classic and elegance

of the lines for which perini navi and picchiotti Yachts are renowned, while also incorporating an innovative approach to allocate outdoor areas for water toys. the outdoor areas are extremely liveable, and when the tenders are in the water, the bow portion of the main deck also becomes a large lounge area that blends in seamlessly with the interior and the bow cockpit, creating a unique and completely unencumbered space dedicated entirely to entertaining guests. A large owner’s suite with a private terrace is located on the lower deck in the stern area. As this area hasn’t been entirely consumed by the garage, it also serves as a stunning sealevel owner’s terrace. “I can’t help but feel extremely honoured by this new collaboration,” commented architect bernardo Zuccon. “picchiotti doesn’t need any introduction because it has written an important chapter in yachting history, both in Italy and worldwide. setting out along this path is a source of pride for our firm, particularly as we are doing so with a project that is both experimental and extremely fascinating, as well as one that wants to pay tribute to an architect that has made an important contribution to picchiotti Yachts over the years.”

Reducing Emissions Together Photo courtesy of Xeamos

AS THE EFFECTS OF DIESEL FUEL CONTINUE TO MAKE HEADLINES IN the media, the grassroots expertise at XEAMOS is providing solutions to a very real and global problem.

A

decade ago, Solfic, a renowned solution supplier for marine engine emissions reduction in the Netherlands, initiated an extensive R&D programme to develop exhaust after treatment systems for specific marine and industrial applications. During that time, NPS Diesel established an almost worldwide sales and service network for superyacht generators, and in February 2017, the two companies joined forces to launch a new venture called XEAMOS. Based in the Netherlands, XEAMOS serves superyacht shipyards and owners, as well as

5 6 | S Y I 2 0 1 7 | Volum e 12 | Issue 2

Zenoro.indd 56

leading yards in the commercial sector, in the design and supply of IMO Tier III and Class approved SCR systems that reduce the harmful NOx in diesel exhaust gases. Both in-line and compact versions are available to fit in any narrow engine room, and the NOx is reduced by Selective Catalytic Reduction with the addition of a urea (Ad Blue) injection in the exhaust gases.

Driven by Owners Soot-free diesel exhaust gases from generator sets on superyachts are increasingly becoming a common standard. Not initiated by legislative rules, the demand is driven by yacht owners who wish to avoid VIP guests experiencing particulates on deck, greasy deposits in swimming water and the smell of diesel fuel. Reduced NOx in exhaust gases is driven by the IMO Tier III legislation that is mandatory in Emission Control Area’s (ECA’s). The coastal

waters of North America and the Caribbean are designated ECA’s for yachts above 500 GT when the ship’s keel has been laid after 1 January 2016. Further ECA’s are expected to become available soon.

Experts in their Field The expertise within XEAMOS covers all relevant aspects, such as wet exhaust systems, hull penetrations, back pressure control, classification, safety, space constraints and noise and vibration requirements. Ivo van den Berg, Business Manager of Zenoro Premium Generators, comments: “At Zenoro we use customised zero soot and/or dual exhaust after treatment systems in such a way that it can be optimally integrated into our generator sets. By this we are able to offer a one-stopshop principle to our clients in the refit and new build mega yacht markets.” XEAMOS’ solutions include Electrical Zero Soot

Systems, Fuel Burner Zero Soot Systems, Zero NOx Systems and Dual Exhaust After Treatment Systems for propulsion and generator engines. XEAMOS’ specialties are custom engineered combinations of SCR, DPF and silencer.

Alternative Options Electrically regenerated zero soot systems are available for 4.4 diesel engines with up to a 13-litre swept volume, and the electrical heater can be used for both regeneration and load bank functions. At each zero soot system, an

automatic safety bypass valve is provided as a standard feature to ensure maximum availability of the generator in the case of unforeseen issues. Fuel burner regenerated zero soot systems are available for diesel engines with a 6 litre-swept volume and above. The innovative XEAMOS burner guarantees reliable regeneration at any engine load, even with sulphur containing fuels, while the optional harbour mode maintains a minimum exhaust gas temperature to ensure optimum HC reduction at low generator loads.

To save space and cost, XEAMOS also offers combinations of zero soot and zero NOx in one reactor/silencer unit or as two separate reactor units. The system is equipped with an electrical heater or a fuel burner to regenerate the diesel particle filters.

Comfort and Safety at Sea Organised by Peutz – a grOuP Of indePendent architectural and industrial develOPment consultants – the comfort and safety at sea symposium shared the latest insights and future perspectives on design innovations within the shipbuilding industry, alongside contributions from industry worldleaders and research institutes.

T

aking place in march 2017 at the Worldhotel Wings at rotterdam/the hague airport, the comfort and safety at sea programme focused on improving ship design, and covered topics, such as safeguarding the future of the shipbuilding industry, a look at whether luxury yachts and production vessels face the same challenges, required innovations in the design process, and the core strengths of the maritime industry. speakers from Peutz were joined by guest keynotes from marin, bayards and ulstein who highlighted the developments that have been made in comfort and safety at sea through superior design.

Introduction and Historical Overview ferry Koopmans, ceO of Peutz, introduced the theme of comfort and safety at sea from a historical perspective. ever since man sailed the seas a sense of safety or unsafety has

developed, as illustrated by 17th century William bradford’s Of Plymouth Plantation. examples of the vikings sailing the seas in their open viking ships and capsizing due to instability of the Wasa, and examples of the modern era illustrate developments throughout the ages. Peculiar designs driven by innovation – some more successful than others – have been shown. for example, it took almost a century to find a wider application than the flettner rotor, which was first introduced on the buckau in 1924.

Innovation at the Fore renaud gaudel of edwin van leeuwen (ulstein) tackled the topic of ‘design of a highcomfort class offshore accommodation vessel’, showing how by rearranging the design process, ulstein was able to optimise the structure of an offshore accommodation vessel to improve comfort in a cost-effective way. niels moonen of Peutz highlighted how flow technology is being used to assess the wind

In recent years, a focus on crew safety and comfort has led to an increased demand for higher comfort class vessels.

loads on a damaged semi-submersible, as well as the wind comfort on the sun deck of a cruise ship. stephan van den akker illustrated how air quality assessments help prevent passengers and crew being exposed to exhaust gases or odour nuisance. Peutz flow technology uses state-of-the-art wind tunnel research and computational fluid dynamics (cfd) calculations to optimise the design. from offshore platforms to luxury yachts, integrating flow technology into the design process has become increasingly important to realise the next level in comfort and safety.

Pushing the Boundaries enrico della valentina and Jorrit-Jan serraris of marin focused on the topic of ‘comfort design extended: from mega yachts to offshore maintenance’. designing large yachts is all about style and comfort, however, design for comfort requires dedicated studies – experiments and/or calculations – to evaluate the relevant motion parameters on board. recent studies have shown that motion is not only governed by the well-known properties of displacement, velocity and acceleration, but also by something called ‘Jerk’, which forms part of a new way of looking at how comfort can be explored: first by defining the ‘operations’, and then by assessing the relevant comfort parameter for the operation. albert hogewoning of bayards highlighted aluminium’s advantages with regards to its material properties and the manufacturing techniques available for innovative design

Networking alongside innovation.

Peutz review.indd 59

solutions. aluminium is used in a wide range of maritime industrial products, from superyachts to offshore platforms, and reducing the weight of a mega yacht superstructure allows for a lower centre of gravity and therefore an enhanced level of comfort. through the use of flow simulation, nautical research and fire safety engineering, innovative products are emerging, such as highly functional wind shields or very light stair tower constructions. some of these developments are almost paradoxical, in that saving weight on the structure, for example, can allow for additional weight in the form of increased safety features, therefore ‘thinking lighter’ can translate to ‘thinking safer’.

Comfort at the Fore gerwin guichelaar and edwin de vries of Peutz, showed how in recent years, a focus on crew safety and comfort has led to an increased demand for higher comfort class vessels. not only are high noise or vibration levels potentially harmful for the crew, excessive levels also affect the quality of sleep and communication on board. a new method for predicting noise and vibration levels allows for structural optimisation by directing vibration energy away from sensitive areas. this results in a more cost-efficient design to meet the required noise and vibration criteria, so reducing the need for end of pipe solutions.

2017 boat shows on track for record year The Palma Superyacht Show, which concluded on 2nd May, saw an eclectic mix of visitors overawed by the huge variety of superyachts on display. But while some of the world’s most celebrated vessels were naturally a hot topic, the 60 exhibitors were also a big part of the attraction. Aside from (mostly) returning exhibitors, this edition also welcomed a number of first-time participants. A third of the show’s exhibitors were located in this year’s inaugural Refit & Repair area. This new B2B section was centred around yachting’s professionals, and was well received by both visitors and participants alike. Since its debut in 2013, the Palma Superyacht Show has gone from good to worldclass, exemplified by the annual increase in its quality of participating yachts and exhibitors. This year’s fifth event will prove a hard act to follow in 2018, but we’re confident the show’s organisers, loyal exhibitors and collaborators will succeed in raising the bar for our next edition. And over in Barcelona, participating yachts gathered for the very first MYBA Charter Show to be held at OneOcean Port Vell. Around 56 yachts attended, which translates into two very impressive totals: 2437.9 linear metres and 29,000 gross tonnes. There were 554 crew members who worked hard to ensure the success of the show, as well as

495 brokers and charter managers in attendance all of whom inspected and appraised the yachts on display. A total of 107 exhibitors showcased the finest ancillary services on the market, and 25 sponsors expressed their support. Come September, the superyacht show season kicks off again commencing with the 40th Cannes Yachting Festival from 12 to 17 September, followed by the Monaco Yacht Show on 27 to 30 September. And in November, the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in Miami is swiftly followed by METS in Amsterdam. In the interim, a host of shipyards are quietly busying away on the next superyachts set to be unveiled at the upcoming shows. Only last month we were stood in the dry dock of Dutch shipyard Heesen Yachts as it presented 50m motor yacht Home (formerly Project Nova), the world’s first fast displacement hull form with hybrid propulsion, meaning she is one of the quietest on the oceans, offering the ultimate luxury: a silent cruising mode. With a new breed of superyachts launching on the horizon, the next wave of shows are set to make for exciting times – we look forward to seeing you there!

Since its debut in 2013, the Palma Superyacht Show has gone from good to world-class.
