Zero Emission Solutions from Xeamos It’s a commonly shared vision that there will be no future for polluting diesel marine engines in a world where the majority of diesel engines, even in the smallest vehicles, are running without producing hardly any soot or harmful gases at all. Because what is a bigger anti-climax than a luxurious superyacht with soot-producing diesel gensets leading to dirty deposits? For superyachts, a good after treatment solution is essential. Xeamos’ aim is to provide bespoke systems for clean air. Taking into account all variables common in yachts such as a wet dry exhaust, fuel quality, comfort, limited available back pressure, active regeneration, certification rules and safety, complete solutions ensure clean sailing. Every design is based on the customer and their specific requirements, resulting in a solution that does not only meet statutory regulations, but also the customer’s wishes. With compact, price competitive designs that meet superyacht standards and certification rules such as IMO Tier III, Xeamos has proven to be an ambitious newcomer to the market. Since 2017, Xeamos manufactures exhaust after treatment systems. Starting as a joint venture between Solfic Energy & Emission and NPS Diesel, Xeamos is a XEAMOS brand new name built on a lifetime of BOOTH NO. experience. Meet the Xeamos team at QS10 Monaco Yacht Show to discuss all MYS 2018 developments with them.

eroen Sirag – Export Director HISWA Holland Yachting Group: “I am writing this overlooking the wonderful IJ waterway in Amsterdam, an iconic location bustling with life and business. When the HISWA Holland Yachting Group moved its head office to the Dutch capital five years ago, we were ahead of the curve. Today this part of Amsterdam is a very successful port and a hugely popular destination for cruise ships, and is well on the way to becoming a major centre for the Dutch and global superyacht sector in the years ahead. The appeal of Amsterdam as a destination for superyachts – both in its own right and as a port of call en route to Scandinavia and beyond – are increasingly on the radar of owners and captains. The HISWA Holland Yachting Group is working closely with the Port of Amsterdam and other parties to bring even more attention to the attractions of the Dutch capital and encourage even more calls by high-quality visitors. At the heart of the success of both the Dutch superyacht sector and the HISWA Holland Yachting Group is the way its leading yards and supply companies are prepared to invest time and money in the collective future of their industry. The goal to develop a superyacht cluster in Amsterdam is a superb example of this visionary approach. However good they may be in their work, and however great the attractions of Amsterdam as a destination, these attributes are not sufficient in their own right to ensure large numbers of superyachts

coming to Holland. The cooperation on stimulating new avenues of growth through the addition of links with the main harbours in the Nordic countries will therefore be crucial in the coming three years. It is a big project, but if all the key stakeholders pull together in the same direction, our chances of success are high. Talking of success, the Dutch superyacht industry has been in the news lots recently for all the right reasons. Our yachts continue to win many major awards and we are selling more superyachts at a higher total value, while also steadily increasing our market share over the past four years. Twenty-one deliveries over 30 metres were made in 2017 by ten different yards. These superyachts had a total value of EUR 1.19 billion, which translates into an average price of EUR 57 million per superyacht (an increase of almost 10%). It is also the highest total value recorded to date. As an association, our strategy is not primarily based on how many members we have but on the quality of their products and their commitment to promoting the Dutch superyacht sector abroad. We are an exclusive club of leader firms who make a genuine difference in our industry. Our ‘Think Yachts, Think Holland’ campaign has struck a chord among superyacht owners across the seven seas, while our wide range of shared export activities and trade missions offer a strong and unified face to the outside world.’’

“Every yacht starts with a vision, the owner’s vision. About how the yacht looks and how it feels. but the perfect yacht can only be the perfect yacht when it is the owner’s perfect yacht. When it touches the lives of those who come on board in exactly the way the owner intended. Some things, it seems, cannot be done, perhaps, because they’ve never been done before. finding solutions requires an open mind, a focussed mind. This is how we build; not just the perfect yacht, but the owner’s perfect yacht. Only when we achieve this can we say ‘built by Oceanco’.”

eveloped to bridge the gap between the 500GT yachts and those over 1,000GT, the new 55m class is the Dutch shipyard’s solution for owners looking to step up from 47m and 50m Heesens. However, despite being the second yacht in the 55m class, Laurentia is no copy of motor yacht Azamanta.Exterior designed by Omega Architects with interior styling by Radyca – a design firm from Miami appointed by the owner – Laurentia sports a clean exterior design without fashion plates and

supports, all cleverly engineered and perfectly executed by Heesen’s in-house experts. The result is uninterrupted panoramic vistas: nothing comes between guests and the breath-taking views they enjoy when cruising.
Beach Club Delights Although based on the 55m class, Laurentia features developments in line with the owner’s brief. Technical spaces have been organised differently, such as the main deck space forward
of the engine room, which has been re-planned and made available as a technical and storage space. Now the tenders are found on the forward main deck and are lowered in the main deck as to have a cleaner deck profile from the exterior, creating a sleeker appearance. There is also a highly spacious additional emergency generator room. Importantly, the rearrangement of this technical space allowed for more room to be freed up for the expansive 55m2 beach club and aft deck,

undoubtedly a hub of entertaining. this in turn creates more room for sun loungers, and integrates the area more into the swim platform. in keeping with the wellness element on board, the sun deck measures over 100m2 and features a huge sun pad surrounding a luxurious 1,400 litre swimjet pool.

exterior spaces have been extended in general. more sunbathing areas are now located on the sun deck, while the bar seating area has been redesigned to be more spacious and open. additional small internal changes also make a surprisingly big difference; such as the addition of larger pantries and roomier communications areas in the wheelhouse. a dedicated stairwell also
connects the three decks, allowing the crew quicker service. a key element that has also been revisited is the three life rafts on either side of the wheelhouse, the result being that they can now be selfreleased in an emergency, but still hidden in an extension of the wing station to keep the exterior looking as clean as possible.
Glass is Class surrounded by floor to ceiling glazing, Laurentia’s 40m2 sky lounge is a particularly special space. the glass theme continues in the main saloon where the full-height windows are augmented by transparent bulwarks creating panoramic views. this is in keeping with the design brief, which requested a “closer connection to the environment outside” and

explains why a long, vertical shape was chosen – to broaden the connection from sea to the sky. scooped glass is also cut into the bulwarks across from the dining salon to further facilitate this connection. even the beach club has windows creating a brighter ‘sea-level’ atmosphere inside. when it comes to Laurentia’s interior design, last minute alterations were inevitable considering the fact the owner signed on when the yacht was already 90% complete. started by Heesen on spec, and previously known as project alida, a number of changes were required to suit the owner’s brief of a warm, relaxed but ultimately sophisticated atmosphere. interior designer, ramon alonso of miami-based firm radyca, who has worked with the owner on several of his previous yachts, made significant changes to the flooring, furniture and lighting to balance the contemporary motif of the interior but pair down some of the busier design details.
Efficiency and Comfort central to Laurentia’s identity, however is Heesen’s revolutionary fast displacement Hull

form pioneered in partnership with naval architects van oossanen. doing away with the inevitable compromises that both displacement and semi-displacement hulls have with regards to both performance and space, the fast displacement hull not only minimises these compromises, but optimises space, speed and fuel efficiency. the upshot is, owners can tailor the hull to their preferences, and in the case of Laurentia’s owner, where efficiency and comfort were the main priorities, Laurentia is the most fuel-efficient yacht of her size with great seakeeping capabilities. Less fuel also means less pollution. during the sea trials, which were held in the north sea at the beginning of august 2018 in moderate sea conditions, Laurentia exceeded her contractual speed and reached a top speed of 16.6 knots. internal volume is a whopping 740 gt.

risbane-based creative designer Misha Merzliakov prides herself on her artistic interpretation and creative ‘out of the box’ thinking. Offering exterior design, interior styling and naval architecture for luxury motor and sailing yachts and superyachts, both new builds and refit and repair, she is making a name for herself among the yachting elite. The Australian Superyacht Rendezvous in April 2018 proved the ideal back drop from which to launch the studio’s two latest superyacht
concepts; A 70m trimaran and 40m explorer yacht, both aluminium, and both sporting a strong, utilitarian profile.
Project Greta Expansive decks and a luxurious infinity pool on the transom are the key design features of the 70m trimaran, Project Greta. Plenty of storage and options for toys and tenders have been incorporated into the exterior in an attempt to capture market trends, while the interior layout
accommodates twelve guests and is aimed at the Asian market, appealing to their diverse entertainment requirements. “We have incorporated the requests from clients into ‘Greta’ to include practical and plenty of storage for submersibles, tenders, dive equipment and more,” says Merzliakov, Head Designer. “There is a balance between the interior and exterior entertaining and living spaces which lend the yacht to multiple generations of a family finding an area which suit their needs.”

Project GCX40 in contrast, Project Gcx40, the 40m explorer yacht, sports a shallow draft for efficient and long-range warm water yachting. Designed for tropical reef exploration, the yacht has expansive exterior decks with lounges, a plunge pool and beach club. Additionally, there are multiple options for open air dining to allow guests to connect to their environment. “We took inspiration from Australia’s tropical reef coastline to design a yacht that would enhance the experience for the avid explorer or diver discovering Australia or the South Pacific,” explains Merzliakov.
Project gCX40 sports a shallow draft for efficient and long-range warm water yachting.
Fitting Partnerships both concepts have been designed in collaboration with Gold coast city Marina and Shipyard (GccM) – a 17.5-hectare marina and shipyard on the east coast of Australia – and Shaun Phelps from Periscope naval Architects. “GccM is a perfect build partner,” says Merzliakov. “They have a similar client service ethos to Misha Merzliakov yacht Design and an impressive breadth and depth of trades on site. They will be able to bring our designs to life. in addition, Shaun Phelps, a talented naval architect, brings a wealth of Oceanfast experience to the table.” Trenton Gay, chief Executive of Gold coast city Marina and Shipyard, commented: “We are very excited for Misha Merzliakov yacht Design and

the interest they have received at ASR. it has reinforced to us the yachts are on trend and the place Australian designers and yacht builders hold in the international marketplace.” Previous achievements for Misha Merzliakov yacht Design include being shortlisted in the 2017 international yacht and Aviation Awards, as well as being a finalist in the boat international young Designer of the year in 2011.

uilt by uae-based enata marine, and world debuted at the dubai international boat show in march 2018, the foiler offers the yachting fraternity something refreshingly different. offering both comfort and a highperformance driving experience at the helm, its point of difference lies with its carbon fibre retractable hydrofoils, which deliver strength, rigidity, lightness, but most of all, flight. raising the yacht 1.5m above the water, the foiler literally flies across the waves, while delivering up to 20% increased fuel efficiency at top hydro-foiling speeds. specialising in innovative, high performance, composite products, enata marine’s portfolio boasts projects such as the gtcat (an entirely carbon fibre catamaran), the multi50 trimaran, which will compete on the transatlantic race la route du rhum, and the sr-71 blackbird, a large 4m remote control carbon fibre plane that recently won at topgun 2018.
Foil Experts foiling technology is most commonly used in sail boats and kitesurfing, but the foiler is the world’s first hydrofoil yacht. With a cuttingedge hull design and ground-breaking hydrofoiling technology, the foiler has a smooth and progressive take-off and landing for the ultimate comfort of those on board. fully manufactured from carbon fibre with high grade stainless steel, aluminium and titanium mechanical parts, the foils and rudders are also manufactured from carbon fibre in an autoclave, to ensure high rigidity and robustness. the unique design of the foiler increases your speed while reducing the effects of drag on fuel consumption, and leaving up to three times less wake than a conventional yacht. another benefit is the ease of use; taking inspiration from super cars, at the push of a button the foils are deployed via a hydraulic ramp, and you can be on your way.
“We are a family of sailors and kite-surfers and first began foiling in kites and catamarans about about ten years ago. We’re fully aware of all the benefits of foiling,” stated alois vieujot, manager at enata. “this was a very natural step for enata. We produce large competition and professional drones, as well as racing sailing boats and kitefoils. the foiler is really a blend of all those technologies.”
Cutting-Edge Propulsion the foiler can travel at speeds of up to 40 knots, with hydro-foiling flight commencing from 18 knots with seven passengers and a driver, running on hybrid power delivered by twin 320hp diesel engines, two electric generators and two electric torpedoes. With a cruising speed of 30 knots, the foiler has a range of 130 nautical miles, drawing fuel from its 300-litre-capacity tank. and when travelling through ports or areas abundant in timid wildlife, the hybrid propulsion system offers battery-powered silent cruising capabilities at 10 knots for up to ten minutes.

Tenders & Toys At 9.45m it can also be stowed in a superyacht tender garage.
Toys & Tenders The ultimate superyacht toy, the FOILER is also surprisingly compact and easy to maintain, thanks to its retractable hydrofoils and propellers, which are lifted and positioned out of the water when not in use, meaning the 9.45m FOILER can also be stowed in a superyacht tender garage. “To start this project, we merged our R&D with the Swiss company Hydros that already produced a working FOILER prototype in 2015. The FOILER is the result of a long process that combined all the skills of the company and I think we offer an outstanding product that is both delivering outstanding comfort and performance whilst being very easy to use,” commented Vieujot.
Foiling Technology In addition to an enhanced performance, advances have been made to optimise the shape of the foils, while the fully retractable setting is a world first. With its patented system,

the FOILER switches from foiling mode to Archimedean mode in a few seconds. When moored or at the harbour, the foils and electric torpedoes – which propel the boat – are entirely out of the water. The hull also features a highly elaborate design to enable a smooth take-off and landing, even in waves. “The best word to describe driving the FOILER is tranquillity,” says Vieujot. “It its extremely relaxing and easy to use. You don’t have any movement form the waves underneath as you are above them. It is extremely stable and safe, like a flying carpet over the ocean. It also eliminates sea sickness. Going back on a regular motor boat really feels like going back in time”. Taking up residency on the French Riviera with a permanent berth at the Yacht Club de Monaco and in Saint Tropez from mid-July 2018, the FOILER will be available for sea trials for all interested parties.
Built by UAE-based Enata Marine, the FOILER was world debuted at the Dubai International Boat Show in March 2018.

t a whopping 106.7m, Black Pearl, delivered by Dutch shipyard Oceanco in March 2018, scoops the top spot for largest DynaRig sailing yacht in the world, but she is also one of the most advanced superyachts to ever be built. It took an extensive design team to produce the inspiring designs for 106.7m sailing yacht Black Pearl, not to mention the integral roles played by the engineers, naval architects, builders, project managers, and of course, the owner himself. A tri-deck sailing yacht built from a steel hull and an aluminium superstructure, Black Pearl’s design by Nuvolari Lenard (assisted by Villate Design) derives from a naval platform by Ken Freivokh Design.

Black Pearl also boasts a hybrid propulsion installation and regeneration mode when under sail.
Her revolutionary three 70m DynaRig carbon masts and sailing system are designed by Dykstra Naval Architects, a process that required subdividing the sail area into smaller lesser-loaded sails so that they can be set or furled by pushing a button. What’s more impressive is that all 2,900m2 of her black, highly distinctive sails can be set in a rapid seven minutes. When operating under wind power, Black Pearl truly comes in to her own.
Distinctive Features Since her launch in March 2018, Black Pearl has proven to be a new generation landmark sailing yacht with a unique identity, matched only by the complex vision of her discerning owner. In addition to her state-of-the-art DynaRig system, auxiliary power comes from a pair of MTU 12V2000M72 diesel engines, housed in a single level engine room, achieving a top speed of 17.5 knots. However, Black Pearl also boasts a hybrid propulsion installation and regeneration mode when under sail. This alone will mark her out for

decades to come. The result of a collaboration between BMT, Nigel Gee and Oceanco, Black Pearl’s hybrid propulsion system, as well as other onboard systems such as waste heat recovery, categorise her among a new generation of environmentally sustainable, and highly efficient vessels.
The system consists of two shaft lines, each connected to a MTU12V2000 M72 (1,080kW) and a permanent magnet Electric Propulsion Motor. This connection is made via a combining gearbox with the prime movers driving a controllable pitch propeller. The result is no less than eight different modes of operation:
Propulsion System
Silent cruising, whereby the batteries power the EPM for slow speed cruising/maneouvering and the main engines and generators are shut down. Quiet cruising, in which the EPMs and hotel load are powered by the auxiliary generators, used for speeds of up to 11 knots or for motor sailing. Economical cruising, which uses the main diesel engines for propulsion, and the EPMs are used as generators. Normal cruising, with the main engines providing the propulsive power and the auxiliary generators providing the hotel power. Boost, used to achieve the maximum speed under power, with the main engines and EPMs
Forming an integral part of the owner’s vision, the concept of Black Pearl’s propulsion and energy generation system focused on flexibility, seeking to achieve a system that would offer the greatest flexibility in terms of arrangement, space and at the same time help contribute towards reducing the total onboard kW. In achieving these factors, the aim was also to maximise the amount of luxury areas on board and give the greatest flexibility to layout. The result is a hybrid propulsion solution that marries the propulsive benefits of direct drive with the energy management benefits of diesel electric. What makes the solution even more forward-thinking is the scale on which it has been achieved.

being used for propulsion and the auxiliary generators providing both propulsive power and hotel load. Conventional sailing, and lastly, Regeneration, which when under sail, uses the controllable pitch propellers and EPMs to recover energy which is then fed into the main switchboard and battery banks.
Environmental Thinking Further environmental innovations that have been incorporated on board include thermally efficient glass upgraded insulation, smart HVAC controls, and an extensive waste heat recovery system. A further three diesel generators provide electrical power and are coupled to battery banks systems philosophy to store unused energy in the system with the possibility to use it at a later time. These design integrations not only make Black Pearl highly sustainable, but she is also highly efficient. This hybrid propulsion installation offers maximum flexibility, answering her owner’s original brief. It provides space optimisation, fuel efficiency, and reduced overall noise and

vibration. The battery banks also allow for optimised operation of the engines and generators, which in turn means less maintenance and increased time between overhaul periods.
Inspiring Features Built to Lloyd’s Registry standards, Black Pearl accommodates up to twelve guests in six cabins. With a 15m-long beam, her interior volume is 2,700GT. The yacht’s interior design, conceived by Valentina Zannier, Partner and Head of Interior Design at Nuvolari-Lenard and assisted by French architect Gerard Villate, represents a philological research study of Louis VXI style, with a number of interspersed Art Deco elements. In addition two key aesthetic features of her exterior are the raised pilothouse and extensive sundeck. It’s fair to say that Black Pearl is not only the world’s largest sailing yacht, she is the world’s most advanced superyacht.

Core Business shu is one of a number of 100m+ yachts that Lürssen has built its reputation on, but it’s the smaller 60m+ market that is piquing the yard’s interest, says michael breman. “in the past fifteen years, we have built twenty yachts that are between 50-90m, and only fifteen yachts that are larger than 90m,” he says. The titans of the seas may be the showstoppers, but it’s 60-80m new builds that breman would like to see form the yard’s core business. “our mission is to build yachts of a more ‘humane’ size,” he says. Today’s owners are ‘lifestylers’ and may not want a 100m yacht even if they can afford it. In the past 15 years, the yard has built 20 yachts that are between 50-90m.
Refit Facilities The hamburg-based blohm+voss shipyard has now become the main hub for refit and repair, with the superyacht division rebranded to Lürssen yacht refit to reflect this change. refit
has become a core business for Lürssen and following the blohm+voss acquisition it now has the facilities and capabilities to undertake multiple refits at any one time, all in northern germany. during the last year more than a dozen yachts between 50 and 100m+ have used the Lürssen facilities for modifications and maintenance works, eight of them at the blohm+voss yard. amongst them are some of the world’s most iconic yachts, such as Lady moura, yas, rising sun and alfa nero, while Tatiana, Quantum blue and jupiter have already passed through in the first half of 2018. “regardless of whether a yacht is a Lürssen or a yacht built by another yard, a time will come when it will need a refit, some repair, or even a conversion,” says breman. “This is work that Lürssen undertakes with the german precision for which we are world-renowned.”

“Today’s owners are ‘lifestylers’ and may not want a 100m yacht even if they can afford it.” with eight facilities spread across germany, Lürssen has ample space to build and refit multiple yachts simultaneously in covered sheds and drydocks. Purely focussed on bespoke builds (with no interest in venturing into series yachts), Lürssen has invested heavily in its facilities over the past year in a bid to improve efficiency. with more than 2,700 people employed across the group and undertaking all its steel work in-house, the shipyard not only has the space but also the manpower of 700 plus engineers and naval architects, and a multitude of craftsmen to tackle any project – be it a new build, a refit or a conversion.

or Viraver, there is an answer to all questions; a solution, a project, a feasibility. This is the necessary approach of today in order to survive in a highly competitive market in which, according to Giacomo Leopardi, “Imagination is the first source of human happiness”. With this enthusiasm, Viraver has laid its foundations as one of the most advanced companies in the glass industry, and not only with components and technologies dedicated to the yacht industry. Viraver excels in supplying glass solutions for different uses and sectors, with multiple divisions dedicated to the automotive industry, architecture, security and industrial design. All divisions benefit from, and are inspired by, Viraver’s bespoke approach towards each one of its clients, emphasised by the company’s ethos, ‘There is no problem that we don’t have a solution for”. “The thinking behind the company ethos,” says Marco Mazzarolo, vice president and general manager of Viraver Technology, “is the notion of finding a problem without a solution. Obviously there are limits and constraints, which we are well aware of, but there are always solutions. Viraver has chosen this path in its dialogue with its customers.” Of course, to achieve this, it is necessary to invest in research, development, technology and materials. Viraver has risen to this challenge thanks to its customers’ demand for innovation
and new solutions. Viraver’s never ending quest to find the best solution for each challenge and its desire to innovate has resulted in the creation of highly complex designs, and the use of new materials to achieve new results. This is possible because Viraver doesn’t stop at the first hurdle, or when encountering the unknown, but instead sets out to find the solution.
Two Emblematic Projects What is impressive about Viraver is the speed with which the company not only keeps pace with the changing times and technology but tries to anticipate it with a holistic process; the translation of thought to solution to implementation. This alone explains why Viraver is one of the leading glass companies in the world; it offers quality without compromise. This attitude and approach has resulted into two emblematic projects, that are today proof of the company’s determination to be a leader in its field: the largest production plant dedicated to the chemical strengthening process for the world’s largest single slate of glass (eight metres by three metres and 21 centimetres) known as The Millennium Glass; and one of the largest pieces of curved glass ever produced for the yachting industry to date.

a modern yacht. The use of glass as a structural and design element in the yachting industry is, therefore, becoming increasingly important, but this is also true for the car industry and the use of glass in the design of buildings or a prominent element used in the industrial sector. It is, therefore, absolutely essential to have an openminded approach; to have a vision. Within Viraver – where there is a constant sharing of data and projects among the divisions – there is a great advantage added directly derived from this open approach to find solutions.

The Right Partner for this specific type of glass, its strength came from thickness, which introduced the issue of weight. for Viraver, these were the challenges to overcome, so using its acquired experience from the automotive and yachting industry where safety is very advanced and applying its technologies for weight reduction and its standards of quality, it developed a bullet proof glass of reduced weight and thickness, yet still of the highest quality. To quote Albert einstein, “The only source of knowledge is experience”. It is exactly what we
do at Viraver. We better ourselves with every experience, leveraging it as a means for improvement, to consolidate our technology, and to invent new solutions. We are ready to support our clients and partners in any situation, whether it be a new project or an important refit or refurbishment. ost onboard systems are interconnected and managed by VLAN, often via the same Internet entry/exit point (VSAT, 3G, 4G, etc). This means all traffic goes through the same portal, so a hacker gaining access via a malicious email is a risk for the entire network, from AV systems through to alarms, air conditioning, engine management, security doors, navigation and monitoring systems. But the safety of the vessel is not the only issue. Many yacht owners conduct private and professional business while on board. This makes their personal data such as e-mail addresses, photos, videos or even bank account details, vulnerable to malware and phishing, a threat highlighted last year by the worldwide ransomware attack on Windowsbased computer systems. As almost everybody on board uses the Internet connection, the risk could come from an unsuspecting crewmember downloading a virus that self-installs and spies on passwords, or even hijacks the smart phones and computers using the network.

Kerio Control The industry emphasis to date has been on prioritising performance over security, but the threat of cybercrime requires both. With over 25 years of experience as IT integrators in the yachting sector, Videoworks is ideally placed to analyse, define and specify bespoke cyber security solutions into new build and refit projects. In addition to installing a firewall and antivirus, or occasional software updates and patches, creating solutions tailored to individual performance and security needs also requires the knowledge and experience of a skilled IT integrator to combine the best products from established brands. kerio control, for example, is an all-in-one threat and connection manager able to protect the yacht’s server via an Intrusion prevention System that monitors both entering and exiting net communications. In addition to nextgeneration firewall capabilities, the device offers Load Balancing to guarantee high-speed transmission for the most important traffic types,

Monaco Yacht Show There is no fail-safe, single protection against a determined cyber attack, however, a layered approach will help to mitigate the security risk by making it much harder for hackers to penetrate the network. during the 2018 Monaco yacht Show, Videoworks will be exhibiting its ‘future of onboard technologies’, supported by a press conference that will highlight the “new frontiers of intelligent environments” to be held at 17.30 on 27 September. other elements of Videoworks’ technology that will be on display include the emotional room, in which visitors will be able to find out how an algorithm on a neural network can evaluate the mood of the people in a space and adapt the lights and music accordingly, and ‘threedimensional sound’, which will provide a listening experience custom-tailored to a desired type of sound, such as a tropical forest or a symphony orchestra for a truly immersive experience.
Systems Installed The Italian company’s onboard systems already installed on some of the superyachts set to be present at the 2018 Monaco yacht Show, include 50m Latona’s AV system. Incorporating local and centralised racks, with the addition of a network rack on the upper deck, the Sonance 5.1 surround sound system in the upper saloon, main saloon and owner’s cabin guarantees an outstanding acoustic experience. This yacht is also fitted with the kerio control cybersecurity system, which uses a web filter to permit administrators to deny or limit access to internet sites, services and applications, protecting users and infrastructure by prohibiting access to harmful sites that could steal the user’s data.

Intent on piquing interest and pushing boundaries, the range of high-performance boats is vast, from explorers to elegant cruisers and everything in between.
Numarine 26XP Turkish shipyard Numarine, headquartered in Istanbul, has unveiled the second yacht in its revolutionary XP Series. Following the launch of Numarine 32XP, it world premiered its 26XP vessel at Cannes Yachting Festival, where both full displacement yachts were exhibited side-by-side for the first time. Both exterior and interior designed by Can Yalman, the shipyard’s long-time collaborator, and naval architecture by Umberto Tagliavini, the vessels represent true explorer yachts with over 3,000nm range. Both vessels share similar design DNA, such as futuristic angular windows and a vertical bow. They also exceed the latest standards of noise and vibration reduction, thanks to Silent Line technology, and have been designed with ocean cruising in mind. A key feature of the 26XP is its 16m-long
flybridge, which covers two thirds of the hull’s length and can accommodate a 5.5m tender. Meanwhile the 32XP offers incredible volumes of internal living spaces on board, with unique internal layouts internally and customised external spaces. Accommodating up to twelve guests, the 32XP is designed for long cruises with ample storage facilities.
Invictus 320 GT The Invictus 320 GT is the third model in Invictus Yacht’s GT range, combining great manoeuvrability and an interior designed with comfortable cruising in mind. Offered with either a single or twin engine, it made its world debut at Cannes, and sports a highly recognisable reverse bow – one of the GT range’s distinguishing features. The deck’s layout includes access to the cockpit via the stern swim platform, moving left of the large sundeck, which can be further expanded by transforming the fore sofa. In the middle of the cockpit, the L-shaped dinette has a table and faces an al fresco kitchen. Among the Invictus 320 GT options, the carbon hardtop stands out (it can be extended to provide more shade with a transpiring, ventilated fabric held in place by carbon rods), as does the broad range of sterndrive options (diesel or petrol, single or twin), up to a maximum of 700hp. Pearl 95 – The vast flybridge features a Jacuzzi, extensive social seating areas.
Pearl 95 Interior styled by Kelly Hoppen, with exterior design and naval architecture by Dixon Yacht Design, the new Pearl 95 debuted at Cannes Yachting Festival. Set to become the shipyard’s flagship vessel, at 29.2m, it also marks its debut into the superyacht market. Sharing the same seakeeping capabilities and impressive manoeuvrability as her smaller sister ships, the Pearl 95 is both aerodynamic yet practical. The 95 takes the sporty ethos embedded in Pearl Yachts’ culture into a semi-raised pilothouse design, with an innovative and voluminous interior. The superstructure maximises glazing, introducing sweeping curves in the shearline enhancing the connection with the sea. New elements include the owner’s cabin now being located forward on the main deck, as well as featuring a full beam design to maximise space. A unique feature is the floor to ceiling fully glazed automatic patio doors on three sides of the saloon which when open allow for an unrivalled connection to the outdoors, while the vast flybridge features a Jacuzzi, extensive social seating areas and a sun pad, wet-bar with sink, BBQ, fridge and ice maker for an impressive external helm position. The Pearl 95 achieves a top speed of 28 knots and has a cruising range of 380 nautical miles thanks to its 2 x MTU 16V M96 2400hp engines. Caterpillar C32 1925hp and 2 x MTU 16V M96L 2600hp are also available.

The new Hylas H57 offers an evolution of the shipyard’s bluewater sailing vessel.
“Our clients are experienced sailors, who know what they want,” says Andy Huang of Hylas Yachts. “As a semi-custom builder, Hylas Yachts can help them achieve their goals for the next phase of their cruising lives. With the technology on board Bill Dixon’s design, the H57 gives them the sailing performance they want, and a layout that lets them do it all with style and in comfort.”
Arcadia A105 – There is an extensive use of cutting-edge highlyefficient thermal insulating glass.
Arcadia A105 With the third hull already in build, the Arcadia A105 made its official world debut at Cannes Yachting Festival one year after its initial unveiling. The A105’s chiselled masculine lines are one of the yard’s trademarks but in the A105 they have been reinterpreted to raise the characteristic communal guest and al fresco areas to new heights. Large apertures reduce the need for air-conditioning, solar panels are integrated into the superstructure, and there is an extensive use of cutting-edge highly-efficient thermal insulating glass. In addition, a variety of different interior layout options (over 50 combinations) are available at the design stage all pivoting on the insideoutdoor ethic. In both the communal areas and the cabins, black and white is used in unusual woods and combined with gloss lacquered inserts to create a contrasting interplay, while the furnishings have deliberately been kept low and sleek. To further boost privacy, the master cabin is accessed via its own stairs.

y reducing weight, aluminium reduces transportation costs. It also saves time and cost in installation and decommissioning. further savings come because of the metal’s low maintenance qualities, and its resistance to corrosion, and because it has a considerably longer lifetime than steel applications. extremely versatile, aluminium adapts easily to any design, and offers a smooth surface finish. so it’s well suited to many marine applications and is used widely throughout the industry today. through pioneering research and development, aluminium specialist hydro extrudes this remarkable metal specifically to meet the demands of offshore and marine construction. working with clients to create and supply machined, pre-assembled and finished components to their precise requirements, its latest alloys offer even greater structural strength for shipbuilders, all in accordance with established international marine society certifications. aluminium also has a lower environmental impact (for example, less painting or removal of old paint), fewer transported
kilograms, and it’s easier to decommission and recycle.
Fire Protection Both aluminium and steel are non-combustible and do not burn. however, aluminium conducts heat more effectively than steel, which assists in the dissipation of heat during a fire and allows rapid boundary cooling of exposed structures. In areas where special fire classes (such as a60) are required, hydro applies protective materials, including mineral wool or ceramic fibres. even with the additional weight of the protective insulation, and any active fire suppression system that may be required, the aluminium structure is still far lighter than steel.
New Investment to meet the specific demands of the aggressive marine environment, hydro is continuously developing new alloys. already a pioneer in the use of friction stir welding – a technology used for lightweight structural applications offshore – hydro is investing at its innovation and

technology centre in finspång, sweden, for the testing of fusion welding and laser welding. the latest, the 5083 series, is highly resistant to corrosion in salt-water, so particularly suited to applications in the waterline area. It also offers higher weldability and predictable post-weld strength, and extruded sections maintain their flatness. they meet the stringent technical requirements for naval marine hull structure applications, with extrusions and panels as required by dnv-Gl and aBs. for the production of the panels, hydro uses friction stir welding (fsw), a technique that uses a rotating tool to join flush metal surfaces. the pressure and heat help to form a new, homogenous structure. compared with melt welding, fsw provides greater strength and less deformation. It also produces an entirely nonporous product, with sealed joints flush with the flat surface. In addition, fsw is an excellent technology for replicating products. hydro friction stir welds and machines some of the longest and widest aluminium panels in the world, and joins them together to form larger panels, maintaining superior tolerances without sacrificing strength.
“welding dissimilar metals can add value – lightness, thermal difference – in the construction of offshore structures, but there is still much to learn, so research in this area can lead to great gains across many industry sectors,” says marijn rietveld in hydro’s offshore and marine market team.
hydro’s new Friction stir Welding facility in Finspang, sweden.
Offshore Expertise with a global research and development network, and team of offshore and marine specialists, hydro offers unique technical resources. In particular, the ability to produce large profiles and – through fsw – extruded panels, is making a huge difference to many offshore businesses. examples include extruded decking profiles up to 320mm wide, structural profiles with a circumscribing circle diameter up to 290mm, and friction stir welded panels up to 18,000mm long by 3,500mm wide. these are major innovations that make the benefits of aluminium even more valuable in a highly challenging field.

Otam Reveals New 85 GTS Yacht Design Italian boat builder Otam has revealed the designs of its 85 GTS model, slated for delivery in June 2019. Designed by Joseph Dirand, and with a top speed of 45 knots, the 85 GTS is a natural evolution of its existing yachts. “The genesis of the 85 GTS began during the Cannes Yachting Festival last year,” explains Matteo Belardinelli, Sales & Communication Manager for OTAM. “We were presenting the OTAM 80, which attracted a lot of attention for its performance and the fact that it has a second full-beam master suite amidships. Several clients came to me and expressed interest in a slightly larger version of the yacht, which provided the starting point for our R&D.” i. www.otam.it

Rosetti Superyachts Unveils New Remote-Control Navigation Italian yacht builder, Rosetti Superyachts, has developed a new remote-control system based on a machine-to-machine connection system. Currently installed aboard Giano Tug, a Lloyds Registercertified tugboat, the remote-control technology enables yachts to be manoeuvred using the same controls found on the yacht’s bridge, therefore potentially enhancing security during navigation and the opportunity to reduce management and insurance costs. Much of the technology for autonomous vessels is already in place, but regulation needs to be properly updated. Last year, the IMO launched a regulatory scoping exercise to analyse the impact of self-driving vessels. i. www.rosettisuperyachts.it

Volvo Penta Unveils Hybrid Marine Propulsion Concept Based on proven Volvo Group technology and experience, Volvo Penta has unveiled a hybrid concept for its IPS propulsion system. Designed to enable zero emission running for marine vessels, the electric-only mode allows entry into environmentally sensitive zones, as well as offering enhanced onboard comfort and boat handling characteristics. The innovation comes hot on the heels of Volvo Penta’s announcement that it will provide electrified power solutions for both land and sea by 2021. “With full torque from the electric motor available instantly, the boat will maintain the responsiveness and controllability that IPS is famous for in electric-only mode, as well as offering the ability to run at 10 to 12 knots,” says Niklas Thulin, Volvo Penta’s Director of Electromobility. i. www.rosettisuperyachts.it

Building the Lürssen Way We all recognise Lürssen as being one of the largest superyacht builders in the industry, but it’s only when you get the chance to walk around their facilities that the scale of their operation fully comes into focus. For me, the opportunity to do just that occurred in June this year, when I joined a group of 20-plus international journalists who had gathered in Hamburg at the invitation of the German yard. As the first press trip to take place in nine long years, expectations were high all round to see what would be revealed. But in rather non-typical Lürssen fashion, our first port of call on our evening’s arrival would not be anything remotely yacht-related, but instead a two-hour stroll around the streets of Reeperbahn, Hamburg’s famous red light district, known as a Kieztour. Directed by our friendly local guide, we were educated on the ups and downs of the area’s long cultural history, much to the group’s shocked amusement. With daylight, however, came serious business, and we headed off to Rendsburg for a shipyard tour of the Lürssen-Kröger Werft facility. Here, a confident Michael Bremen disclosed the yard’s latest agenda – the desire to capture not just the 100m+ market, but custom new builds from 60m and up, a message slightly overshadowed by our impressive walk on board recently launched (but then under construction) 111m TIS.
In the afternoon, we were transferred back to Hamburg to visit the Blohm+Voss shipyard, now rebranded as Lürssen Yacht Refit. Since Lürssen acquired B+V in 2016, it has doubled the number of refit projects on site, and a gradual phasing out of B+V brand colours and name is in progress with regards to the superyacht sector, although B+V remains a fully operating company for all its other shipping interests. That evening’s entertainment came in the form of cooking our own meal within the kitchen of a high-end Hamburg restaurant, which secured firm friendships among our already tightly-bonded group. Organised with German precision, the trip was packed with Italian flair and good humour; an apt representation of the yard’s management team itself. By morning, with or without sore heads, we were up and out again, this time heading to Bremen to visit a further two of Lürssen’s eight facilities – Lemwerder and Aumund. These sites are where the ‘blocks’ are made, and many of the larger yachts are finished off. With just enough time to squeeze in a quick walk-by 136m SHU, which was undergoing her final outfitting and being readied for delivery, it was then time for us all to part our separate ways. Thank you to Lürssen and the management team for organising such an educational and enjoyable trip. It was truly memorable.
Since Lürssen acquired Blohm+Voss in 2016, it has doubled the number of refit projects on site.
