EDITOR’s nOTE

From Port to Port First we had Cannes. Then came Monaco. And now we have our sights firmly set on the ensuing METS and Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Taking place across three innovation-packed days on 13 to 15 November, METSTRADE, located in RAI exhibition venue in Amsterdam, boasts 87% international exhibitors and 16% new companies for 2018, while the 59th edition of FLIBS (31 October to 4 November) will take place across no less than seven waterfront locations. Our comprehensive previews on page 20 and 56 respectively give you the low down on what to expect, with a little additional info from Holland Yachting Group on page 30. This issue comes swiftly on the heels of the Monaco Yacht Show, where Damen’s successful YS 5009 design, Power Play, made her international debut. After successfully completing her sea trials in the summer of 2018, the new 55.5m Power Play remains available for immediate delivery to an owner looking for a proven adventure machine, a blend of support and stand-alone yachting capability – we take an in depth look in our yacht report on page 58. On page 10, we get up close and personal with Abeking & Rasmussen’s flagship yacht Aviva. Boasting a 17.24m beam so vast it allowed room for additional side decks, she is unmatched in terms of volume within the 90m-plus market. In our Audio & AV section, we sit down with the founder of communications specialist Bond TM, Will Faimatea (page 50), and we get up close and personal with Fusion Marine’s new innovative app (page 55). We also cover all bases in our Paint & Fluid Coating Systems with Carlisle Fluid Technologies (page 49) and industry stalwart Awlgrip (page 53). We have a host of special features, from SolarImpact, the world’s first ocean-going solar yacht (page 65) and the latest instalments from superyacht transporter RollDock (page 62) to hearing about LIST’s multi-sensory design aboard 32.5m sailing yacht Ribelle (page 16). I took some time out to speak with Veth’s Maarten Jansen at Monaco on the company’s acquisition and its newly launched propulsion system (page 33), and we take a cruise on board CMN’s 60m Slipstream – a nomadic yacht in impeccable condition ready to cruise the globe at a moment’s notice courtesy of Burgess (page 38). Our Focus on Germany peers through the windows at Lloyd Werft on page 44, a German heritage shipyard which has its finger firmly on the pulse when it comes to cutting edge design and innovations within the yachting sphere, while our regular instalments of People Pages, News in Brief and Outfitters will keep you fully up-to-date with the industry’s developments. Safe travels, and happy show season. Julia Zaltzman | Editor

Azimut | Benetti G roup Announces Year of Success Azimut|Benetti Group, led by Paolo and Giovanna Vitelli, has closed its accounting period with a value of production estimated at €850 million. Volume of sales are also up, with 68 orders in the 24 to 40m segment alone, and stand at 261 new units. The Group believes its strengthening in the yachting segment is attributable to the commercial success of the Azimut Grande range, and the 35 and 27m models in particular, and of the Benetti range, which has three Gigayachts under construction, one of which will be the world’s largest hybrid yet built. The Group has invested over €104m over the last three-year period, of which €32m in production capacity and the remaining €72m in renewing the product range. In the upcoming threeyear period (2019-2021), another €122m will be invested, of which €28m in production capacity and the remaining €94m on the development of 10 Azimut Yachts and 7 Benetti models to renew the range.

news in brief Genoa International Boat Show Reports Record-Breaking Edition The 58th Genoa International Boat Show’s postshow figures for 2018 are showing a recordbreaking edition: 174,610 visitors, a 16% increase on last year, 951 brands on display and 62 new exhibitors, 58% of which came from abroad. Along with its new layout, which aimed to underline a multi-specialised event, the show was made up of four boat shows in one across over 200,000m2: Yacht & Superyacht, Sailing, Accessories and Components, Motors (Power Village).

Hull and Superstructure Joined Together on Heesen’s 50m Project Triton The hull and superstructure of Heesen’s Project Triton were joined together at the Dutch shipyard’s facility in Oss on 1 September 2018. The second in the new 50m Steel Class, Project Triton sports exterior lines by Clifford Denn and an interior design by Reymond Langton. A true bluewater motor yacht with a range of 3,800nm at 12 knots, she is powered by two MTU 8V4000 M63 diesel engines of 1000kw each, and will reach a maximum speed of 15 knots. The exterior lines are characterised by curvy flowing forms with elements inspired by classic car design while her full displacement round bilge hull with bulbous bow ensures smooth and comfortable sailing even in rough sea conditions.

news in brief Hydromar Reveals Next Generation Light Mast Hydromar, the Dutch supplier of hydraulic equipment for superyachts, has further expanded its standardised product range with three light mast solutions. In addition to the deck crane with light mast function, it has now also developed the standardised double telescopic light mast, and the fully-custom triple telescopic light mast. Rob Montijn, Sales & Marketing director: “The need for development came from a project for one of our clients quit some years ago. The need for standardisation and improving the budget initiated this new product line. Because of a lack of space, we have mounted a light mast function on top of the deck hYDROMAR crane. Besides saving space another advantage is saving on BOOTh NO. hydraulic equipment. You only need one hydraulic system for 11.609 operating.”

news in brief Nobiskrug’s Artefact Puts Emphasis on Environment and Guest Experience Nobiskrug’s 80m hybrid superyacht, previously known as Project 790 unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show, puts the emphasis on guest experience and comfort with its class-leading environmental features. The yacht’s distinctive aesthetic exterior and interior styling – designed by Gregory Marshall Studio and Reymond Langton Design, respectively – reflect the discerning owner’s persistence to achieve a list of special criteria that included environmental responsibility, technological innovation and guest comfort. “Artefact is a unique vessel that marries cutting-edge engineering and striking architectural design to embody a tribute to the nuances of NOBISKRUG human experience that are often overlooked or BOOTh NO. ignored,” says Captain Aaron T. Clark. “Many 10.412 traditional aspects of superyacht GA’s have been challenged and reimagined in this design to create an METS 2018 unprecedented experience while minimizing impact on fragile marine ecosystems.”

Oceanco’s 90m Dar Wins Big in Cannes Dutch shipyard Oceanco’s recently delivered motor yacht, 90m DAR has won the World Yacht Trophy Award for Yacht of the year at Cannes. The award ceremony took place at a gala event at the Carlton Hotel, and recognised the yacht for its modern revolutionary exterior styling by DeBasto Design and sophisticated interior design by Nuvolari Lenard. Bearing the unmistakable DNA of an Oceanco, she reflects the latest advances in glass technology and is the first yacht in the Netherlands to be given the official Lloyd’s Register Integrated Bridge System (IBS) notation and designation. Conceived to maximise opportunities for outdoor living and to have direct contact with the marine environment, DAR features a superstructure completely finished in reflective glass.

Rosetti Superyachts Unveils New Concept at MYS Rosetti Superyachts unveiled its new 52m Supply Vessel concept at this Year’s Monaco Yacht Show, developed in collaboration with Italian designer Giovanni Griggio of Phi Design Lab. The project offers the functionality typical of a supply vessel with an ample aft deck for carrying water toys and/or a helicopter, combined with the design features and quality finish of a superyacht. The rationale behind the design is to offer owners various options to best exploit the outside living areas, including a large beach club, swimming pool, solarium and shaded living space. “I was looking to provide added value with design elements that make this project a unique proposal,” says Griggio. “The bio-mimicry that characterises some of the exterior areas, for example, was inspired by the organic structures of leaves.”

he largest yacht to date built by German shipbuilder Abeking & Rasmussen, Aviva’s vast 98.4m length signals a new era for both the yard and its repeat owner. Completion of superyacht Aviva required the long-established builder to extend its build shed to accommodate yachts of up to 125m. Although initially a move to meet the demands of its client, this bold step also elevates the German yard into a significantly larger size category of yacht builder. With both exterior and interior design by Reymond Langton, naval

architecture was undertaken in-house by Abeking & Rasmussen. Aviva’s dark blue, rounded steel hull is paired with the clean lines of her bright metallic silver aluminium superstructure. Capable of a top speed of 20 knots, with a cruising range at 13 knots of 6,000Nm, the powerful looking yet curvaceous hull is the result of extensive new research and testing by the German shipyard to ensure superior seakeeping capabilities combined with a 20% decrease in drag. It is designed to be blade thin at the bow and to be 17m beam amidships and taper to a narrow-rounded

stern for hydrodynamic reasons. Less engine output is required, and fuel consumption is dramatically reduced. In addition, a key feature is Aviva’s hybrid drive system: it allows the yacht to run at up to 11 knots without the use of the main engines, using electric motors only; smooth, silent and environmentally beneficial. “We are very proud to present our latest superyacht named AvIvA,” says till von krause, Abeking & Rasmussen sales director. “this is the result of

the highest workmanship and best communication between the owner and his team during the short period of less than three years.”

The Lifestyle Factor the design of 98.4m Aviva builds on the success of the owner’s existing yacht of the same name, also penned by Reymond Langton. Working with designer toby silverton on the exterior the design studio developed a sleek, characterful and elegant profile. the interior is modern yet mystical,

board Aviva he found that he could only cruise in waters where he had access via tender and car to decent quality courts such as in the Balearics and the south of france. he found this ever so limiting as he would like to cruise the world and visit the south pacific and Australia again as well as the complete mediterranean and the coasts of the us.”

The Brief the owner’s brief listed a number of requirements: to carry a large 14m dayboat/ tender; a huge upper family lounge that could become totally open to the exterior on three sides; and to carry on board a padel tennis court. originally located on the exterior with a proposal to have an open-air court with sliding and folding walls, the GA was later amended to accommodate the owner’s keen desire to ensure the padel court be permanent and indoors. Another aspect of the brief was that

the route and staircase down to the court should not be second class compared to the main stair, it should be both generous and beautiful. the padel court is located in the widest point of the 17m-wide hull and as low as possible on the double bottom 600mm from the keel, shoehorned in between the engine room and crew accommodation. “We had to work closely with Abeking & Rasmussen regarding the arrangement of water tight compartments and escape routes as the volume is immense and damage stability had to be resolved,” explain the designers. “It was quite a challenge to make all this come together but it works superbly and padel is even played whilst underway.” Additional challenges included the fact that padel courts are usually built on a concrete floor with end and corner side walls made from glass

or concrete to ensure the correct bounce of the ball. on board Aviva, the steel work had to be thick, heavy and super stiff, before being layered with astroturf and at least two tonnes of sand. the lifestyle factor extends to the crew, who are encouraged to play with the owner and guests. When the court is not in use for padel the net can be removed and the crew play football and use other exercise equipment in the space. It is the largest crew gym of any yacht.

Volume In addition to length and padel courts, the owner’s primary objective was for Aviva to have vast amounts of luxury space. serving the highly unusual role as the owner’s primary home, Aviva required huge interior volume, which is said to have been a priority over exterior aesthetics. “he [the owner] was of course expecting the yacht to look different and be beautiful on the

YACHT REPORT exterior ‘as a given’ but it was in no way his priority,” say the designers. “fortunately, we worked closely with the owner’s in-law and owner’s representative toby silverton on the exterior design and he laid down the brief for us. toby has a lot of experience in automotive design, aircraft engineering and naval architecture so was quite passionate about making the new Aviva something very special on the outside and it was a very rewarding experience to work with him again.”

Sleek swim platform.

Aviva’s near plum bow is a defining feature. Giving her great stability and sea-keeping capabilities, it also gives Aviva a strong, masculine and sculptural profile. Large windows afford expansive vistas from the inside out, with pools of natural light filling the interior, and on the upper saloon the walls open completely with fold-out balconies. “there have been many challenges with designing Aviva, possibly the most challenging was designing the entire yacht, exterior and interior in six months which is half the time we would normally have for a yacht of this size,” says the designers. “We had to manage this as the yacht was built in such a short time, one year less than normal for a yacht of this size. from the signing of the build contract we had to deliver the complete exterior shape in less than two months including making a 3d computer model, and a physical design model to show the owner for approval.”

Unique Like most owners, a linchpin of Aviva’s design is the request for her to be ‘unique’ and unlike any other yacht out there, including the former Aviva. Reymond Langton achieved this by implementing long and horizontal lines, a clean hull, and sculpting shapes on the surface. “the sheer line of the hull has one step in it, however it is one continuous line from bow to stern,” they explain. “We made horizontal lines in the hull with a knuckle line on the bow which ran into the three-long main deck window bands. on the lower deck we grouped the crew windows into longer window bands. for the superstructure we made fairly straight lines on the tops and undersides of the bulwarks and we didn’t use any connecting ‘fashion plates’ as we had on the previous Aviva. No rub rails or other embellishments appear on the hull to keep it sleek and minimalist in a bid to help the eye focus on her length. In contrast, long twisting facets on the side bulwarks are used to create contrasting shadows in the paintwork. the faceting also extends to the cap structures, a design details inspired by

Lamborghini’s sesto elemento. further aspects taken from automotive design include the mast design, which due to aerodynamics needed to be rethought and now resembles aircraft wings. In addition, glass features heavily throughout. the aft ends of all the decks and the sundeck windscreen are seamless glass made without sanctions for a clean modern appearance and reducing the mass as well as affording those on board with uninterrupted views. Both saloons feature floor to ceiling windows, while the upper lounge boasts nine metres of glass side walls that open, as well as bulwarks that fold down for incredible uninterrupted views.

Aesthetics vast amounts of deck space usually calls for vast amounts of decking, but on board Aviva, the owner’s brief required the exterior decks to flow from the interior carpet design. “the result is quite different as we have esthec decking with different patterns on each deck flowing from inside to out,” explain the designers. so too, the ceiling and lighting designs flow from the interior to the exterior, with sculpted organic ceilings stretching up to 2.6m high. Architectural feature lighting is incorporated into the aft superstructure walls, as well as recessed linear bulwark lighting around all decks. the sculptural aesthetic of the exterior is continued with the addition of a facetted

cantilevered bar on the main deck that flows through to the same bar in the interior, and seating which is soft and curvaceous like the hull, finished in the same bright silver metallic paint as the superstructure. the master suite sits in the nose of the main deck rather than higher up, for extra stability. It stretches from a full-beam cabin to an expansive bathroom featuring a central Corian bathtub. An additional spa lies aft of the cabin, while the suite’s vast wardrobe-cum-dressing room was inspired by Chanel boutiques. In place of a large dining room, there are instead two bistros ideal for more intimate dining experiences, while the owner’s bridge deck office is twinned with a conference room next door for larger meetings. All in all, Aviva fits the owner’s request for something “curvy” and “organic” – the opposite of symmetrical. “We truly believe Aviva is unlike any other yacht,” say the designers. “At 5,000GRt – a huge volume compared to other yachts of similar and longer LoA – we think she is cleverly designed to disguise this size. the blue hull reflects the sea and the bright silver superstructure reflects the sky to help the lines of the yacht to look sleek and architectural.”

Award-Winning In May 2018, List GC was presented with the Boat International Design & Innovation Award for Best Interior Design – Sailing Yachts for the exceptional, innovative design and implementation of the sports yacht interior for 32.5m Ribelle. The challenges posed by this

sailing yacht, boasting 128m2 of floor space, were the strict rules and requirements regarding weight and the requirement to remove the fixtures and fittings in order to take part in regattas. In addition, the copper surfaces on board Ribelle were almost all designed as polished surfaces, therefore requiring protection from oxidation. Meeting such strict requirements calls for optimal cooperation, both internally among all employees and externally with customers and suppliers.

aking place across three innovation-packed days on 13 to 15 November, METSTRADE, located in RAI exhibition venue in Amsterdam, boasts 87% international exhibitors and 16% new companies for 2018. Opened with the inaugural Breakfast Briefing on the first day of the show, this year’s opening ceremony will include a keynote address by the Chief Executive of Groupe Beneteau, Hervé Gastinel, in which he will share his thoughts and experiences about innovation. The Breakfast Briefing will also feature the ICOMIAhosted award ceremony for the world-famous DAME – Design Award. The DAME Awards also serve as a way for the METSTRADE community to give something back to society as all entry fees are donated to a good cause, and this year two charities both of which pursue marine-related objectives have been selected – Wetwheels and the Blue Marine Foundation.

The Centre of Luxury New for 2018 is METS’ central luxury theme, best exemplified by its debuting MaterialDistrict Pop-up (formerly Material Xperience On Tour). This exhibition is entirely dedicated to inspirational materials for yacht building, with over 120 materials selected by twelve partners all showcasing their wares in the Elicium in RAI Amsterdam. The comprehensive display of materials is again being organised at the Construction Material Pavilion by the global platform for innovative materials, MaterialDistrict. This year’s emphasis on luxury sees a raft of custom design innovators exhibiting and attending. Anchor brands, such as Armani, which is showing with fashion and interior, are throwing light on the bespoke element of yacht building, from interior designers to shipyards. The examples and references in this exhibition will show that intelligent and recycled materials can be beautiful and luxurious. Recycled felt, recycled leather, lightweight composites made of hemp, wooden textiles and acoustic wool are just some examples of what innovative ‘good’ materials now pass for luxury. MaterialDistrict’s creative director

Els Zijlstra will take to the stage on 14 and 15 November with a presentation that will focus on how luxury is not about the bling anymore, but about real, custom-made, personal materials.

All Aboard the SuperYacht Pavilion Announced in May 2018 as completely sold out, the highly popular Superyacht Pavilion promises to be a hive of activity once again. With two dedicated halls and an associated educational and social networking programme, this will be the 14th occasion that the Superyacht Pavilion offers a 100% platform for the luxury yacht world during the world’s largest B2B leisure marine event. “We are delighted that we can again serve the superyacht industry with this unique B2B concept within the METSTRADE Show,” comments RAI Amsterdam’s maritime domain manager Irene Dros. “The Superyacht Pavilion has grown exponentially since it was launched in 2005 and we are delighted that it attracts such a wide range of exhibitors, both established and new-to-market companies. Some 10% of the participants in this year’s pavilion will be making their debut and, with more than 20 different nationalities, we can truly claim to be the only international B2B exhibition providing products and services for the large luxury yacht industry.” Adding to the attraction for this part of the leisure marine market, the 23rd edition of The Superyacht Forum will run parallel, with one day difference, to the METSTRADE Show. Organised in association with METSTRADE, this three-day event sees professionals come together in a meeting of minds from all sectors of the superyacht market, bringing influences and inspirations from both within and outside the industry. The event will offer insight into the latest technical developments and feature a diverse range of keynote speakers, think tank talks and networking opportunities. To further emphasise the importance of the superyacht industry, a new award category for superyacht builders has been added to the

METS 2018 prestigious annual Boat Builder Awards. Initiated in 2015 by METSTRADE and International Boat Industry magazine (IBI), this event recognises individual and team success within companies globally. The fourth edition of the Boat Builder Awards will take place on Tuesday 13 November, the opening day of METSTRADE, in the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam.

HISWA Symposium Golden Jubilee year The year 2018 marks the Golden Jubilee of the International HISWA Symposium on yacht Design and yacht Construction. Organised to shine a light on the latest developments in the field of yachting and yacht design every year, the Jubilee edition will take place on 12 and 13 November. “We have been organising this symposium since 1968,” explains Hans Hopman, professor in marine engineering at the Delft university of Technology (Tu Delft). “A unique collaboration between HISWA, Tu Delft and RAI Amsterdam, it is the ideal forum in which to share the latest scientific findings with the international market and research institutes.” This year’s symposium, which is open to businesses, students and research institutes carries the theme of ‘Back to the Future’, and will be opened by naval architect Gerard Dijkstra and the former associate professor at Tu Delft Dr lex keuning. They will reflect on past innovations while also considering new ones in the fields of yacht design and construction.

I-nnovationLAB Stage A series of lectures and presentations organised on the I-nnovationlAB Stage in Hall 6 this year will take place in the MaterialDistrict, spanning three days of the exhibition. Designed to stimulate discussions on a variety of topics in the leisure marine industry, the stage on the exhibition floor will host two expert panel debates during the first two days on Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 November 2018: ‘Cleaner oceans and waterways’ and ‘The search for authentic sustainability’. The panel sessions will host a range of specialists from the industry with an expert background related to the topics at hand. The session will be moderated by Patrick Hemp, technical manager of ICOMIA, and the panellists will be Dr vienna Eleuteri (sustainability manager at viareggio Superyachts), ken Wittamore (managing director of Triskel Marine, Hybrid Power & Propulsion Systems), Jaap van der Woude (sustainability committee chair of the European Composites Industry Association),

METS 2018.indd 23

James Starkey (yacht design & production graduate from Southampton university) and Charlotte Schiffer (designer at the lADIDA Design Institute). “This is the second year that sustainability will be at the very heart of the METSTRADE Show,” explains Dros. “This clearly demonstrates our commitment to these crucial issues and ensures we have the broadest possible reach. We intend to continue placing sustainability at the forefront of our activities as METSTRADE encourages and advocates for ways to implement more environmentally friendly practices throughout the industry.”

E-nnovationLAB The growing demand for hybrid and electric engines is becoming ever-more apparent within the leisure marine market. METSTRADE responded to this emerging trend last year by introducing the E-nnovationlAB platform for electric propulsion technology. This year’s E-nnovationlAB will occupy an even more prominent position in Hall 7, where it will host Danfoss Mobile Electrification and Transfluid, amongst others. Electrification is changing the boating world. It is clear from the growing popularity of purely electric boats and visible in the increasing number of hybrid variants, including serial hybrids (in which a generator supplements batteries and renewable energy sources) and parallel hybrids (in which an electric propulsion system operates in conjunction with a traditional propulsion engine). The E-nnovationlAB will celebrate the world of marine electrification by showcasing electric and hybrid solutions, and bring together specialists to explore technical challenges and celebrate successful projects. A series of presentations by experts will define

the costs and benefits of various electric and hybrid options, report on critical advances in the core areas of energy storage and hull design, and describe ongoing implementations in applications ranging from superyachts to canal boats. vital information will be provided for naval architects, system designers, boat builders and other marine professionals.

Videoworks Unveils new Intelligent Environments Innovative technologies, new connections, intelligent environments, 3D sound and increasingly complex onboard systems: these are the keywords for videoworks at METS 2018. In a world where use of onboard audio/visual systems and networks has become very important for owners and guests, videoworks continues to demonstrate its ability to innovate. Intelligent environments are increasingly being viewed as a natural evolution of domotics (automation of a smart home), and the Italian company has decided to offer visitors an opportunity to experience two systems of great technological and emotional impact at its stand. For those who are seeking an immersive listening experience, videoworks has realised a device that diffuses tri-dimensional sounds in the environment where it is installed, offering customised sound experiences. Closing your eyes, you will feel like you are standing in the middle of a tropical forest, or sitting in the front row at a symphonic orchestra concert. All of this is possible with the k-Array vyper kv-52 speakers and DSP VIDEOWORKS card by leaff Engineering, pivotal to equalise the sound with repeatable results. BOOTH NO.

am writing this overlooking the wonderful IJ waterway in Amsterdam, an iconic location bustling with life and business. When the hISWA holland Yachting group moved its head office to the dutch capital five years ago, we were ahead of the curve. Today this part of Amsterdam is a very successful port and a hugely popular destination for cruise ships, and is well on the way to becoming a major centre for the dutch and global superyacht sector in the years ahead. The appeal of Amsterdam as a destination for superyachts – both in its own right and as a port of call en route to Scandinavia and beyond – are increasingly on the radar of owners and captains. The hISWA holland Yachting group is working closely with the port of Amsterdam and other parties to bring even more attention to the attractions of the dutch capital and encourage even more calls by high-quality visitors. 3 0 | S Y I 2 0 1 8 | Volum e 13 | Issue 4

HYG METS.indd 30

At the heart of the success of both the dutch superyacht sector and the hISWA holland Yachting group is the way its leading yards and supply companies are prepared to invest time and money in the collective future of their industry. The goal to develop a superyacht cluster in Amsterdam is a superb example of this visionary approach. but, however good they may be in their work, and however great the attractions of Amsterdam as a destination, these attributes are not sufficient in their own right to ensure large number of superyachts coming to holland. The cooperation on stimulating new avenues of growth through the addition of links with the main harbours in the nordic countries will therefore be crucial in the coming three years. It is a big project, but if all the key stakeholders pull together in the same direction, our chances of success are high.

Talking of success, the dutch superyacht industry has been in the news lots recently for all the right reasons. our yachts continue to win many major awards and we are selling more superyachts at a higher total value, while also steadily increasing our market share over the past four years. Twenty-one deliveries over 30m were made in 2017 by ten different yards. These superyachts had a total value of eur 1.19 billion, which translates into an average price of eur 57 million per superyacht (an increase of almost 10%). It is also the highest total value recorded to date. As an association, our strategy is not primarily based on how many members we have, but on the quality of their products and their commitment to promoting the dutch superyacht sector abroad. We are an exclusive club of leader firms who make a genuine difference in our industry. our ‘Think Yachts, Think holland’ campaign has struck a chord among superyacht owners across the seven seas, while our wide range of shared export activities and trade missions offer a strong and unified face to the outside world.’’

hans golbach, director of kuIper holland, explains why his products are an essential part of any yacht: “While panels may not always be visible, their quality is one of the main determinants of the overall quality of a yacht. besides looking good, panels should offer benefits in other vital areas, such as weight and noise reduction and fire safety. We ensure our products meet the highest standards by choosing top-grade materials and processing them with the utmost care. If we can’t find a material that measures up to our requirements, we’ll do our utmost to have it purpose-made. We don’t take quality lightly.”

kuIper holland offers products in several categories: • Kuiper Art − panels finished with veneer or hpl • Kuiper Air − lightweight panels that reduce overall mass, increasing fuel economy • Kuiper Serene − soundproofing panels • Kuiper Protect − fire resistant panels • Kuiper Basic − untreated panels With a wide and varied product range, kuIper holland aims to be a one-stop shop for yacht builders. “Yachts are complicated constructions, and yards need lots of different suppliers,” adds golbach. “When it comes to panels, we make it easy by offering the whole package, including extensive expertise. our ultimate goal is for kuIper holland to be the first name that comes to people’s minds when it comes to high quality yacht panels. We want to be chosen because we’re the best.”

MARINE PROPULSION

VETH PROPULSION BOOTH NO.

Height difference Ldrive and regular Ldrive.

DUTCH MANUFACTURER VETH PROPULSION HAS FOR DECADES STOOD FOR QUALITY, SERVICE, INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY. Following its recent acquisition by American company Twin Disc, we caught up with Sales Manager Maarten Jansen at the Monaco Yacht Show to hear about the latest developments with electrical propulsion, and the future of Veth.

What new developments are taking place at Veth Propulsion at present within the yachting industry? Well, we were recently taken over by Twin Disc, which is a large American supplier of gear boxes for the marine industry. We already had an existing working relationship with them within sales, and this positive experience resulted in the full take over by Twin Disc in June 2018. We remain a separate entity, so the Veth brand will stay in place and we are our own profitable company, but our main aim is to create synergy between the two companies within the fields of sales, purchase and research and development. In combining our interests across these three

Veth.indd 33

core disciplines, we hope it will result in further growth. Specifically, on the yachting industry side, we have also developed our fully Integrated L-drive, which is a contrarotating propeller, and it’s currently available up to 2,000kW, which is suitable for a superyacht of up to 75m, as well as being used as a slow speed unit on board yachts of 100m-plus. It has been specifically designed for bigger yachts, and is a highly compact unit. It’s also a fully electric unit, so it’s created with future requirements in mind. Our other products include bow thrusters with sound suppression systems, which result in a very low noise level, and we have retractable units as well, for when manoeuvring the vessel, which can be connected to a DP system so that the yacht doesn’t require an anchor.

Maarten Jansen, Sales Manager at Veth Propulsion.

VL700i

Is electric propulsion something that has been specifically requested? We know that owners are looking into green propulsion systems, such as electrical units. The L-Drive is fully electrical, featuring an electrical drive motor which is a very low profile permanent magnet electrical motor. As mentioned we supply it up to 2,000kW at present, but we are developing bigger models. Our unit offers up a lot of potential, both from the design side, as well as being easy to install from the shipyard perspective. It’s also very easy

much. Many of the shipyards have a standard platform, which includes the propulsion system, and they only change the accommodation layout and interior. So, as long as they stick with this particular model, they’re not looking to change. If they develop a new model, then the opportunity for a full electric propulsion opens up.

And the size of the unit is an advantage?

to operate, and it’s a reliable unit because electrical motors only have very few moving parts, which means maintenance is straightforward and cost-efficient.

How has it been received by the industry so far? We’ve received a lot of interest from the yachting industry at present. We have just sold two units to the Italian Sea Group, 1,500kW each, which will be used for a 70m diesel electric yacht they currently have in build. We are also talking to the major shipyards as well, all of whom have shown a lot of interest – they see it as a good solution for the future.

Is it the owners who are driving the interest in electric propulsion or is it the shipyards wanting to be able to provide greener options? It’s a combination of the two. From the yards’ perspective, we see them wanting to do something different, and they also have a strong feeling that electric propulsion will be the go-to choice of the future. Therefore, they are investigating all possibilities to be able to offer something different in the market. If they design a yacht that has the capacity to switch over to full electric mode, they will stand out from the competition. The designers are also in direct communication with the owners, and their interest is based upon the feedback and interest that they hear. I would say the interest is coming from three main areas, the owners, the designers and the shipyards, and we try to accommodate all three parties.

Aside from the obvious environmental factor, what would you say are the main pros and cons of electric propulsion? Why would someone still choose diesel over electric? Well, the shipbuilding industry is quite traditional, so they don’t like to change that

www.s u p e r y a c h t - i n dustr y.c om

Veth.indd 35

Yes, that’s a key factor, because our unit is really compact, so compared to other units on the market it’s highly competitive. It means the design of a vessel’s engine room as far more flexibility. These units are either driven by battery or generators, and generators can be located anywhere – so it opens up the potential to put the generator in the fore, and maximise the aft for larger accommodation, or a moon pool for the submarine, etc., without being impeded by a large midship engine room.

How much do you invest into research and development? We invest one million Euros a year into R&D, and we have eight people working non-stop in-house. We do also source external experts, and we have a freelance naval architect who specialises in propulsion who works one day a week for us. But we collaborate with all the large naval architects, and sometimes they seek our expertise on a project that they’re working on, and we assist them with the design of the aft ship. We’re developing another unit with a single propeller at present. It’s designed with smaller, faster yachts in mind, as the L-Drive will only work up to 20 knots.

Where do you think the growth lies for you within the marine industry? We come from commercial shipping, and that is still our largest market. We work a lot in the smaller cruise market, such as river cruise passenger vessels; noise reduction is critical in that industry, which makes our propulsion systems very popular. That creates our largest chunk of turnover, but the yachting industry is growing around 10% every year for us, too. We’ve been in the yachting market since 1961, and our service engineers are 24/7 and fly all

over the world, so after sales is also a large area for us.

Where do you think the propulsion market will be in ten years? I think the future will be more integrated packages. For example, at present, with regards to large shipyards such as Oceanco, we supply bow thrusters for the front of the vessel, including detectable ones, but then we are also in communication with the system integrators who put together an electrical package, so we combine this with our propulsion package, and the yard need only communicate with one supplier. Both the delivery and after-sales is consolidated. I also think remote monitoring will be an area to watch. We’re looking at including sensors in our thrusters so that you can remotely monitor how they run, and flag any areas that require an engineer ahead of coming into port. Sensors are becoming more affordable, communication is much easier wherever you are in the world, and it will make our units even more efficient.

uilt at french shipyard cmn in 2009, slipstream is the sister ship to cloud 9. A prolific charter yacht over the course of her nine years, there are few places her eyecatching black hull and silver superstructure won’t travel. from the british virgin islands to the baltic, even south America, the yacht cruises where the charters dictate, says captain phil, who has spent 17.5 years in the employ of slipstream’s Australian owner. his passion is contagious, exemplified by the multiple clients who have clocked up ten to fifteen repeat charters with him.

Design Inspiration interior and exterior styled by winch design, slipstream possesses many of the hallmarks of winch’s renowned penmanship, from the carpet motifs that mimic the ceiling panels in most guest areas to the signature sky lounge. furnished in muted cream tones with large black leather armchairs, it doubles up as an indoor cinema; the screen majestically rising from a chaise longue with large panoramic windows blacked out for full effect. Family Time At the forefront of slipstream’s offering is her positioning as a prized family charter vessel. her impressive chest of watertoys includes seadoos, stand up paddle boards, kayaks and the highly popular 15m tall waterslide which descends from the sundeck. Along with inflatable platforms it forms the centrepiece to the enthusiastic crew’s assault course, which they often set up for the more active charter guests. As a ratified training school, guests can obtain their jet ski licence during their stay, while many of the crew also double up as sailing, wakeboard and paddle board instructors.

Ambient Dining Ample opportunities for both indoor and al fresco meals abound, from formal dining in the main salon, eating in the round on the sky lounge’s double lazy susan table, to the generous sun deck. plans for a fully retractable sun roof will be realised this winter, along with rain activated sensors, mood lighting and side window screens. “it means that sunny meal times and outdoor starlit cinema screenings can continue whatever the weather,” says captain phil. perhaps the most breath-taking dining option of all, however, takes place on the two-metre swim platform, equipped with a misting system for when it’s exceptionally hot. “it’s a great base, and certainly isn’t restricted to just watersports,” says captain phil. “we hang lanterns and fairy lights for extra ambience, and dinner is served for up to six people on the water’s edge.” once the entire hull has been polished this winter, slipstream will look pretty fabulous from afar as well.

al fresco dining on the sun deck.

Room With a View with sumptuous accommodation for twelve guests in seven cabins spread across three decks, slipstream reaches a cruising speed of 14.5 knots. two pullmans are unconventionally located in the gym, proving a popular choice with children, as well as room enough for a nanny when required. the vip cabin with its private balcony separated from crew accessible areas by a frosted glass screen provides some of the best views on board, while the master suite, with its high ceilings, private study and frosted glass en suite leads directly to the observation lounge. “this area leads out to the foredeck, and is the owner’s wife’s favourite room,” says captain phil.

the full beam master suite with its bold red and black accent colours is also a preferred location to take a massage, either undertaken by slipstream’s trained masseuse tammy, or by a shore-based professional. when it comes to capturing the most spectacular horizons, the jury is out on where best to position yourself. According to captain phil, it’s on the bridge at 5am to watch the sunrise. for late starters, however, the sunken sun deck Jacuzzi at 6pm with a cocktail in hand is pretty hard to beat.

urrently under construction at Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven on the north sea coast of Germany is a highly interesting and complex 140m yacht, due to be launched in 2020. this neatly follows the successful delivery of 115m, 5655-ton explorer yacht Luna, with full ice class, exterior design by German studio newcruise, and interior design by donald starkey. in addition to this, Lloyd Werft has been responsible for several comprehensive refits for both and cruiseliners. the shipyard Lloyd Werft looks back to a long tradition of family shipbuilding that has, over time, developed a wide range of in-house specialist skills and expert knowledge; a foundation from which, looking forward, every new project benefits today. so too, of course, from a shipyard facility with almost no limitation in size – after all, the history of the yard goes back to the construction and servicing of the famous norddeutscher Lloyd atlantic steamship passenger liners of the late 1800s.

in line with this unique company heritage, every new yacht grows from a blank piece of paper, rather than from an already existing platform which is then only adapted to suit the owner’s needs. at Lloyd Werft, they begin with a vision and create the ideal vessel for whatever purpose is specified, choosing the right design and materials to begin with. this process evolves in very close and intensive cooperation with the owner and his team of designers and contractors. from the initial 3d design of the hull right through to the smallest but significant details, such as custom designed and made door handles in the guest cabins, a completely new and entirely bespoke yacht is created.

the Lloyd Werft yard was founded in 1857, at the same time as norddeutscher Lloyd, which was then entering the (at the time, new) north atlantic steamship passenger service. soon, the rivalry on the lucrative north atlantic route became fierce and to stay ahead of the competition the ships grew ever larger and faster. in 1899, the then largest dry-dock in the

advanced systems wherever these are chosen, such as battery drives, LnG power generation, even unique and unusual design features, such as an indoor gardening area for growing fruit and vegetables. Whichever state-of-the-art systems are fitted, these are carefully tailored to be seamlessly embedded in the overall design and functionality of the yacht. further considerations regard the rules and requirements of class and flag, which obviously have to be complied with. the yard keeps in close and intensive contact with flag administration bodies and classification societies, not only to ensure compliance for current projects but also to discuss and develop the rules for the future. yacht design, with all its creativity and innovation, is not only driving technology, but also of course the relevant standards and rules. current examples of this trend are the aforementioned extensive use of glass, as well as increasing numbers of electrically powered tenders.

Going Through Changes the current yacht code developed by the red ensign Group is an advanced and up to date set of rules for passenger vessels and large yachts with safety standards equivalent to soLas and loadline conventions, plus rules for specific yacht features such as helicopter landing areas, tender garages or recreational fire

Bond has been at the top of its game for twelve years now, how has the industry changed in that time? The biggest change for me is the validation of the service that we’re providing. For the first three or four years of Bond, I worried about the fact we were the only ones doing this; it makes it particularly hard to sell if I’m the only one suggesting that clients need a consultancy. But, drawing on my experience as an ETO, I witnessed owners stepping on to the yachts that I was part of (and I would always arrive on board three months before delivery to get familiar with the yacht on an operational level) and the owner would almost accusingly suggest that I hadn’t designed the system correctly or that it didn’t represent what he wanted, etc. So, I went away thinking, ‘What exactly are they doing in the first months of a project?’ Of course, there is a schedule that needs to be adhered to, but in a commercial world you have consultants that create design specifications, so the concept itself wasn’t new to me, but it was a new discipline within the yacht industry. I just thought if there’s a company representing the owner’s requirements who have the qualifications, experience and are paid by the hour, then this negates somebody coming in and selling particular hardware based on a distribution agreement they have, which, of course, is the commercial business of an integrator, but not necessarily in the best interests of the client.

5 0 | S Y I 2 0 1 8 | Volum e 13 | Issue 4

Bond TM.indd 50

So, it’s putting the owner’s requirements and needs ahead of a commercial bias? Entirely.

And the 24-hour service that you then introduced, is that something that owners requested? It became apparent that it was needed within our first few deliveries of vessels. I would receive a call late Friday night or on the weekend, because the client knew that we were managing the project, or involved in some aspect, and therefore had a very good idea of the systems in place (probably a better idea than anyone else because we had a global view, and being an ex-ETO I could still remember some of the menus off the top of my head), so we were able to help. I soon realised that the industry was missing a beat because nobody was providing the after-sales service and support. The 24-hour support was actually much easier to grow than our consultancy. From the manufacturers there is of course a warranty, but that’s also something that I still need to decipher for clients; warranty isn’t support. The integration companies are in a difficult position, because if they sell after-care support they’re expected to fix anything as the client understands it to be covered under warranty. We don’t deliver the system, we manage it, so we’re far more impartial on the support because we will fix it regardless.

In terms of your consultancy, what is your process in understanding what owners need? I’ve been in the yachting industry for 23 years, and there is a certain dialogue of approach, but it’s not a cookie cutter approach. I now have four guys who have been with Bond for twelve years, since the very beginning, so sometimes it’s selecting the right personality to go and sit with the owner’s rep or team, and it’s a dialogue you have to establish. We know where we want to get to, but it’s the process of questions, and it doesn’t need to be a direct question to find out what the owner wants. Does he enjoy classical music? If yes, that’s already telling me that a certain level of acoustics and appreciation of music is required. It’s a subtle approach, but we have to go through each area of AV, IT, communications, etc. We’re ascertaining the functionality of the system and how it should

perform, which then drives us to make a functional specification; it’s a picture of what the system should do, right down to where the touch panel to close the curtains should be placed.

How often do you upgrade a yacht in terms of its AV/IT solutions on board? I’d like to say ten years if it’s a Bond specified yacht, because a well-designed system should last, as we have done for some of the large yachts we’ve been involved with. Of course, big advances in technology on the end-user devices, such as screens, happen within that timeframe, but I would hope the delivery mechanism would last 10 years. There are one or two large vessels out there which Bond has been involved with that are approaching eight years without a major infrastructure change, and I’m very proud of that. But I would suggest five

www.s u p e r y a c h t - i n dustr y.c om

Bond TM.indd 51

years would be a reasonable time to reconsider the technologies you have on the vessel. I think one of the biggest things we brought into the yachting industry is our tender process, because previously someone would put a gA on the table, go to three integration companies and ask them to provide a quote. So, you could end up with a 40% spread on price, and of course functionality, but unless you know the nuances of it you won’t know exactly what it does. My aim after starting Bond was to make the end objective as transparent as possible.

personally, I had never thought that I’d put myself in the position of being a patent owner. It came as a direct result of being in the yacht industry, and the patent is recognition that it was original. I don’t like copying other people’s processes or ideas. That happens a lot – even our consultancy and support is being copied – and as they say, ‘Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery’ – but I’m very proud of being associated with Jetstream. Bond is still responsible for the technical aspects, and it still works eight years since its inception. There are a lot more Ip streaming services now, but it seems to stand the test of time.

Going back a couple of years, explain to me why the Jetstream patent was so impactful for you?

Tell me about the period of expansion you’re going through at present.

Well, it has commercial value, so if you’re wrapping a company to sell it’s quite important.

Well, we’ve been exploring new opportunities. Our growth isn’t necessarily done from within,

A UDIO & AV We have a very strong IT division in Bond, and I was looking for partners for quite some time. Obviously the culture and the trust has to be established, and we’ve found a company now who we like very much, and who we are bringing in as part of the Bond group. We’re also introducing cyber and security courses into our Bond training scheme. The syllabus is yet to be finished, so I can’t say too much, but we will be doing some interesting things.

So, what other innovations do you think the yachting industry still requires?

because to get specialised skill sets you have to look outside of your own circle. We’ve partnered with two new companies, one of which is a heating ventilation and air conditioning company called Synergy. And that’s very exciting for us because just within the process of how my engineers work with regards to the room design, the hVAc is always part of this, but we’ve never been part of it. patrick Voorn approached us and recognised a ‘synergy’ between the two companies in how we approach the work, and after ten months of discussions we decided to move forward with it because there is more to it than just room co-ordination and air conditioning. We are looking to get into making the systems more efficient, which then translates to savings in fuel costs, which is saving the client money. By volume hVAc is the biggest consumer, so the way our AV engineers work with the gA of the yacht means we can now include the ducting, cooling and all the components of the hVAc system and help to make it more efficient for the owner. We’ve also just started to partner with a company within cyber security. I’ve sat back over the last two years and watched how this has been approached by certain areas of the industry, and how it’s being managed, and we’re definitely going to take a different approach on how it’s served. There will be some subtle nuances on our approach which will work better, because it is still hard to sell cyber security in the yacht industry, despite it being necessary.

It seems to be at the forefront of everyone’s mind at present? It is, but they don’t know what to do with it. It’s not just implementation of hardware it’s having

5 2 | S Y I 2 0 1 8 | Volum e 13 | Issue 4

Bond TM.indd 52

I think the most exciting thing, especially from an IT perspective, is the low-orbiting satellites, which will give us far less latency. This will be a significant change in big bandwidth for us, because on some of the vessels that we’ve seen, the latency has actually impacted the performance of a particular application. The satellite is 336,500km above Earth, so it’s almost a 750 milli-second round trip up and down, but if this accumulates over time, you end up with a two to three second delay, and some systems will determine the link to be broken and start again. When you’re talking big bandwidth, this performance is quite aggravating for an owner. So, low Earth orbits will bring a whole new line of applications that can be used, as well as the amount of content that can be delivered to a yacht.

In terms of Bond looking to the future, where does your interest in growth and development lie?

Will Faimatea

processes and policies in place, and this is a mindset which I think the yacht industry has to want to change. It’s an additional expense to implement what is required for cyber security, and to suddenly ask the crew of a yacht to undertake this (which is essentially what you need to do as it’s very difficult to do from the outside) is hard. Most of the cybercrime takes advantage of something from the inside; somebody has forgotten to do something, and the hacker is opportunistic enough to wait for somebody to make a mistake, and then bang. Within the yacht industry, no-one wants to talk about it when it does happen, so the statistics on how often it’s happening are most likely skewed.

I’m not sure I want to give my game plan away! I love the business, and I love the team I’m working with, and I think keeping them and our customers happy is in itself a big part, because who wants to work for or with a company who can’t keep its clients and staff happy? I don’t want Bond to stand still, because I’m not the kind of person to sit back and let it run. But also, I think it’s important for our engineers to see that we’re looking at innovation, and are able to build things that obtain a patent. The continuity of our engineers is really important and, in my opinion, increases our professional position exponentially. With technology comes creativity. We work in a very small industry, and when four of us walk in a room, all with twelve years’ experience with Bond in AV, IT and communications it’s impressive. And it’s this sort of continuity that I want to be able to deliver to the client; it’s not the sales pitch, but our knowledge that comes across.

ew audio visual and technology company, Fusion Marine systems (FMs), announced in august 2018 the successful instalment of its revolutionary Fusion air app control system on one of the largest yachts in the superyacht fleet.

Founded by superyacht industry veterans will Faimatea of bond tM and piers collinson, owner of Fusion automation, with paul cook, formerly from advanced new technologies, appointed as ceo, the relatively fledgling company is full of experience in the av/ tech world, both in yachting and residential. centred around technology system design, specification and installation, a key component to the business is its newly developed Fusion air app – a reliable and intuitive open standard control systems which works with commercially available platforms such as crestron. the action keys can be displayed in any language, including russian, english and arabic.

control system on board one of the largest yachts in the superyacht fleet. “50,000 hours of development have been invested in Fusion air to ensure you can reliably and effortlessly operate your audio, video, communications and lighting via ipads and other touch screens.” said will Faimatea. “what makes it stand out from the crowd is its ‘open standard’ software and common architecture providing a zero debugging process and fast deployment. this is especially valuable for refits which typically allow for less development time than new build projects. the yacht refit market is therefore a key focus for FMs.”

“we are certain this app will take the yachting industry by storm,” added cook. “the action keys can be displayed in any language, and we are already installing it retrospectively on yachts.”

enjoying the largest in-water boat show in the world. One of the most noteworthy changes is the redesign and repositioning of the main entrance a few hundred metres to the north end of the Bahia Mar Hotel and Marina property. The newly designed entrance will feature a plaza-like configuration, efficiently designed security and a vIP and exhibitor gate. The previous main entrance will be used for exhibitor move-in, move-out and other show logistics, thus improving access for both attendees and exhibitors. “Informa is focussed on evaluating the overall show experience and how FLIBS is perceived by people who arrive from many different places and spend time at the show each day,” says Informa u.S. Boat Shows General Manager, Andrew doole. “First impressions are crucial, which is why we are creating a professionallydesigned dedicated show entrance with a thoughtful layout and other elements of convenience for guests and exhibitors.”

attendees,” says doole. “This past season’s shows saw great infrastructure improvements and now we look forward to additional enhancements for the coming show season, beginning with the 2018 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.” Food and beverage options will have an emphasis on quality and convenience, with fresh, farm-to-plate fruits and vegetables, sustainable seafood, and natural, organic meats through partnerships with purveyors of locallysourced, organic and sustainable products. Included among the sustainable elements of the new concessions program are biodegradable disposables made with 100% pre-consumer waste recycled paper, chlorine-free paper products, GrA-endorsed cooking fuel, and the recycling of used cooking oil.

This past season’s shows saw great infrastructure improvements and now we look forward to additional enhancements.

Also new for this year will be an expedient transportation network designed to make reaching the show easy from any direction. Options include dedicated parking sites, bus shuttles, and FLIBS water Taxis with convenient pick-up and drop-off locations. The most pleasant way to navigate FLIBS is via the Fort Lauderdale water Taxi. relax and see the boat show from the water while enjoying Fort Lauderdale’s stress-free and traffic-free waterways. But, no matter how you travel, guests will find colour-coded directional signage throughout the show, onsite map stands, and roaming guest services staff, all designed for maximum convenience in navigating the world’s largest in-water boat show.

Sustainability while ocean conservation is at the forefront of everyone’s mind at present, protecting the environment, reducing waste and healthy choices are among the enhancements to expect from FLIBS this year. The 2018 show’s recently announced culinary provider, Proof of the Pudding, will focus on supporting the show’s sustainability goal of continually reducing its environmental footprint while delivering enhanced guest and exhibitor experiences. “Informa’s investments over the past year in its new portfolio of u.S. boat shows have noticeably enhanced all our shows, prompting encouraging feedback from both exhibitors and

ower Play is no ordinary yacht. configured for an adventure blend of stand-alone and superyacht support functions, Power Play is what has become recognised as a support vessel. following on from ad-vanTage, aXis and shadow, Power Play is the sixth delivery of the ys 5009 design from the damen yacht support range. overall, fourteen yacht support vessels have been delivered or are in build, which in itself identifies a demand among superyacht owners for shadow vessels of this magnitude. stretching 55.5m, Power Play puts the adventure back into yachting. accommodating six guests in three cabins, and equipped with a sun deck and a main deck lounge with panoramic views, she is not without the comforts that superyacht owners have become accustomed to. however, it is the added extras that Power Play brings to the overall superyacht experience where her true value lies. “we’re looking forward to showing our clients the next evolution of the ys 5009 at the monaco yacht show,” commented rose damen, commercial director of damen, in early september. “The adventure element with accommodation and guest areas reflects the changing market requirements. This is the complete yachting experience with diving, submersibles, fishing, exploration, underwater discovery and fast toys.”

the yacht support vessel achieves a top speed of 20 knots.

as the name suggests, a support vessel provides optimum backup to the mothership, whether that be extra accommodation, storage, specialist equipment or indeed a secondary base. able to accommodate extra guests and children alongside the mother yacht, Power Play provides owners with a unique opportunity to truly maximise their experience at sea. other benefits include enabling crew and guests to stay overnight on site during dive and explorer trips while the mother yacht stays in a marina or anchored off a nice village. To optimise command dive and rov missions by accommodating experts such as guides, historians and marine biologists. hosting large celebrations with up to 350 guests, as well as enabling the setup of beach parties and water toys before the mother yacht arrives. Power Play can also be used as a base boat alongside chartered yachts or racing yachts, or indeed enable guests to enjoy two locations at once, connected by helicopter.

Putting the Owner Centre Stage with a gross Tonnage of 489, the high support capability of a damen yacht support vessel is still there, including a 12t deck crane and stern a-frame fittings for the efficient launch and retrieval of large and heavy equipment such as submersibles. however, Power Play also includes further enhancements added by the damen design team, such as a new 50m2 aft adventure centre/dive centre spanning a huge 164m2. This provides more autonomy and facilities for operating in zero-discharge zones such as marine nature reserves. mark vermeulen, product director at damen, previously said: “it’s inspiring to see how a new generation of yacht owners is driving this market. it’s very dynamic; it’s not the conventional thinking about luxury yachting. our

clients have fantastic ideas for diving, aircraft, luxury toys and serious boats. They are planning adventures of a lifetime and even getting involved in underwater exploration, science, film-making or racing yacht events. as a shipbuilder, it’s exciting to be a part of making their ideas a reality.” Power Play reaches speeds above 20 knots, and her crew quarters are large enough for an operational crew of seven people and four further staff, such as pilots, security guards or local guides. The dutch yard has also confirmed that construction is already underway on the seventh hull in the ys5009 series for a fast delivery in summer 2019. The vessel is currently for sale.

t’s not only Dutch shipyards that are highly active in the superyacht industry. Dutch shipping company RollDock also plays a key role in the world of luxury superyachts. although the fleet of multipurpose vessels is often used for the transport of heavy modules, windmill equipment and completely assembled cranes, the semi-submersible aspect of the RollDock vessels makes them more than suitable for the transport of superyachts. However, this kind of expensive cargo – personally attached value included – requires special treatment. “a few years ago, the first superyacht crossed our path,’’ says RollDock sales manager, Dennis van de velde. “We met the owner of a new build, and the turkish shipyard building the yacht did not have the right equipment or ramp to launch the yacht into the water. therefore,

by positioning one of the RollDock vessels in a stern to position against the quay, the shipyard was able to drive the yacht on board by using spmts, explains van de velde. “the yacht was placed on tailor-made saddles to secure it in a safe position whilst on board the vessel during this delicate operation. once the yacht was secured on board, the RollDock vessel was able to manoeuver outside the port limits and submerge, enabling the yacht to float out and ready to begin her maiden voyage. “although it sounds simple, it takes a lot of expertise to arrange the loading and discharge of a superyacht. RollDock had to use its engineering experience to ensure a successful operation. the engineers are highly experienced, designing saddles for the transport of submarines and other vessels on a daily base. for this particular operation, they had to create and design folding saddles, as the support could not stay upright during the float out operation.” the intensive contact with the client and the shipyard regarding the yacht’s hull shape resulted in a precise stowage and operation plan. With the help of guide poles and the crane’s hoisting belts the yacht was floated out

We often transport industrial goods, but a yacht lives a bit more. as crew and a sales team, we get a glimpse of the luxury life and pleasure a superyacht brings. that makes our job extra fun.”

fter five years of research by the swiss company solarimpact yacht ag, the vision of a seaworthy solar yacht with futuristic modern aesthetics has now been realised. launched at cannes yachting festival 2018, the innovative high-tech design concept has been developed to combine luxurious convenience, modern design and sustainability. Tapping into the growing trend for eco propulsion solutions, solarimpact relies on solarbased energy supply and optimised swaTh (small waterplane area Twin hull) construction. however, it also addresses two important aspects for the yachting market: rough seas and high noise levels.

Economical on all Fronts gliding almost silently and without swaying, solarimpact’s hull technology is based on the

swaTh construction principle whereby two torpedo-shaped buoyancy hulls under the water’s surface support the ship. This achieves a physical shaft decoupling that reduces the rolling and heeling of the yacht by up to 90%. perhaps even more importantly, it also significantly reduces energy consumption. all of the systems on board can operate using the sun as their primary energy source, providing an environmentally-friendly solution, and the ever popular proposition of silent cruising. “solarimpact is synonymous with state-of-theart shipbuilding when it comes to fluid mechanics, highly-efficient energy technologies, and sustainability,” comments werner Vögeli, ceo of solarimpact yacht ag. “our yacht concept avoids noise and co2 emissions and is therefore an important step towards electric mobility in the maritime sector.”

Self-sufficiency both self-sufficient in terms of energy, and rapid in the water with a top speed of over 20 knots, all key systems are highly automated enabling a single person to manoeuvre the yacht unassisted. “our yacht sets new standards when it comes

to user-friendliness, convenience and individual freedom,” says Vögeli. “at the same time, it caters to a growing desire and trend towards moving one’s centre of life permanently onto the water.” The 24m yacht offers 340m2 of luxuriously and functionally designed living space on three levels, and a wide range of options regarding interior furnishings, design, and modern lighting, as well as air-conditioning and sound solutions. The primary energy required for this is also supplied by a total of 300m2 of solar surface, with a diesel engine for backup. Future Proofing solarimpact has been designed in collaboration with a host of european technology partners. These include austria’s Kreisel electric gmbh & co.Kg, a company known for developing highly efficient rechargeable battery packs that are among the lightest and most efficient highperformance batteries in the world, and american supplier sunpower, whose solar cells

currently offer the highest possible efficiency. solbian, a specialist supplier of flexible solar modules, uses sunpower’s cells to produce the flexible panels that are ultimately installed on the yacht. “Technology, however, is not in the foreground,” says Vögeli. “our customers can expect a product that sets new standards in terms of user-friendliness, comfort and convenience, and individual freedom. for instance, our yacht also caters to people’s increasing desire to move their centre of life permanently onto the water. The yacht concept we’re presenting takes an important step towards maritime e-mobility by avoiding noise and co2 emissions. we also see this as a special incentive for investors, who not only invest in a promising emerging technology, but also, by purchasing the yacht, pay into an environmental fund that serves to preserve and rebuild the environment for the future.”

his is the eight time the event has been organised by the maritime publishers. This year, at the beautiful Grevelingenhout golf course in Bruinisse, the Netherlands, participants of both the golf tournament and the clinic enjoyed a sunny day of sport, some good food and networking. Of course, there were some prices handed out, but the real winner was CliniClowns. At the end of the day, Charles Van Den Oosterkamp, Managing Director of Yellow & Finch Publishers, handed out a cheque worth EUR 6,700 to John Donks, representing CliniClowns, followed by a warm thank you by Mr Donks to all present.

OUTFITTERS Palladium Pioneering the Future Titan presents its next step in advanced technology for the marine industry with its electrical distribution systems. Distribution systems have been old designs with large electrical breaker panels located on each deck, where long cable runs were needed to connect to each electrical consumer. The Titan designs replace these panels with small remote controlled monitored electrical panels close to the consumer electrical systems. These breaker panels can be monitored and controlled remotely, and can be located in deckheads or other hidden locations, eliminating the need for accessibility. Build times are also reduced as individual blocks can be prewired with the remote breaker panels.

MYS Delivers Once More at Port Hercules Once again, the Monaco Yacht Show has taken place at sunny Port Hercules. Our Editor, Julia Zaltzman and I were both there to admire the greatest superyachts at the biggest and most luxurious show, and to network with current and potential business relations. The Monaco Yacht Show is one of the most important shows in our calendar, and we’re happy to say that SuperYacht Industry has been a media partner of the show for twelve years now. This year, it welcomed 580 exhibiting companies, 120 of the world’s most extraordinary oneoff superyachts and approximately 36,400 participants. Tuesday 25 September 2018 at Le Méridien Beach Plaza Hotel in Monte Carlo, three superyachts stood out above the competition at the fifth Monaco Yacht Show Superyachts Award Ceremony, the inaugural gala event of the world’s most prestigious superyacht show. The RINA award honours the superyacht whose construction complies with the environmental standards established by the Italian classification company RINA. Winner: Solo by Tankoa Yachts The Exterior Design Award distinguishes the most innovative exterior styling of the winning vessel. Winner: DAR by Oceanco The Interior design award recognises the beauty, comfort and functionality of the exceptional interior. Winner: Illusion Plus by Pride Mega Yachts

The climax of the evening ceremony was the MYS Finest New Superyacht Award, which pays tribute to the beauty and luxury of a debuting superyacht at MYS; it takes into consideration her exterior and interior design and functionalities, as well as her highly technical and state-of-the-art performance. Winner: DAR by Oceanco It goes without saying that there were plenty of cocktail parties and evening events to attend over the course of the four days, and I’m happy to say that I managed to find a fine balance between mixing business with pleasure. Both the Holland Yachting Group Party and the Deutsche Yachten Party were two very well organised events that I attended and felt worth mentioning, and throughout the course of the show I met some promising new companies and gathered a lot of interesting news for the upcoming issues of SuperYacht Industry. The Monaco Yacht Show proved, once again, to be an unmissable opportunity to see what’s in store for the industry in 2019. I hope you, too, had an enjoyable show, and I look forward to seeing you at METS. SUPERYACHT Marco Geels INDUSTRY marco@ynfpublishers.com BooTH No.
