news in brief The Goliath Series Launches 117m Alexis Concept The 117m Alexis concept by The Goliath Series combines elegance with capability. Featuring two swimming pools, both equipped with hard retractable covers, a vast open sky bar on the sixth deck is complemented by no less than three master suites and a 3,000ftsq integrated aircraft hangar – large enough to store four small helicopters. Able to accommodate two small submarines, multiple tenders and various watertoys, Alexis can be configured for either diesel-electric or hybrid propulsion. Her ice-class hull can cruise to any location on Earth without needing to refuel, while two large cranes help to load and offload special research equipment easily.
Codecasa Launches Vintage Series Codecasa Shipyard has announced the launch of Codeacasa 43 FB. The first in its new Vintage Series, Hull C122 features a vintage exterior line, and classic interior styling. The private technical launching which took place on 16 February saw the yacht – owned by leasing company – gently slip into the water without a hitch. All technical tests and trials will be completed in the coming months, with plans to display the yacht at the forthcoming Versilia Yachting Rendez-Vous in Viareggio in May.
Heesen presents Project Aquamarine Dutch shipyard Heesen Yachts has unveiled the first yacht in the newly designed 5000 Aluminium Class: Project Aquamarine. This fast-cruising, all-aluminium motor yacht sports a new hull designed by Heesen’s in-house naval architects. The yard worked closely with renowned hydrodynamicists Van Oossanen Naval Architects, who carried out computational fluid dynamics tests and optimised the hull shape. This resulted in an efficiency gain of 12%, achieved by raising the transom to make the design sleeker, and the addition of propeller tunnels incorporated in the hull. MTU’s new 16V4000M65L green oceanic engines have also been installed, specially developed to operate with an SCR unit to reduce NOx emissions. Project Aquamarine is available for delivery in January 2021.
Nobiskrug Announces Successful Keel Laying Following a successful keel laying ceremony on 20 February 2019, Nobiskrug is pleased to announce that 77m M/Y Black Shark is taking shape and remains on track to meet its scheduled delivery in spring 2021. Imperial acted as broker for the sale of Project BLACK SHARK and continues as owner’s representative and construction supervisor throughout the build. “We are pleased to team up again with our esteemed partners at Nobiskrug”, commented Evgeniy Kochman, Chief Executive of Imperial. “Project Black Shark is a major milestone for Imperial on several aspects: the very first Imperial vessel designed in close collaboration with Winch Design and Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, and the very first publicized superyacht project from keel laying to delivery.” | Read more on superyacht-industry.com

news in brief Marina Port de Mallorca to clean up 1.5 kg of ocean plastic Marina Port de Mallorca, located in the middle of the Bay of Palma, has installed a Seabin capable of collecting up to 1.5kg of floating rubbish per day. The system acts as a vacuum cleaner with a capacity to filter up to 25,000 litres per hour, which then re-releases in the port, trapping up to 20kg of floating rubbish of different sizes, and can retain microplastics up to 2mm size. This device can pick up to 1.5kg of plastics per day, which is more than half a ton per year, in addition to the removal of wood, paper, oil or detergent among other things.

MCP Yachts Launches Project 925 Possessing six guest cabins all flexible in configuration, including a double-level owner’s suite on the main deck, MCP Yachts’ 27.74m Project 925 packs a whole lot of punch. A key experiential highlight on board this transoceanic vessel is the sliding electronic door in the owner’s suite, which can be remotely operated to either have clear glass or a video screen. The yacht’s lightweight aluminium structure results in a 15 tons weight reduction compared to other yachts with the same internal volume, while its double bottom tanks and watertight compartmentation provide both convenience and safety.

news in brief Designer Evan K. Marshall Reveals New Ocean Alexander 90R The first model from the new Revolution Series of yachts by Ocean Alexander, 90R is a collaborative design between Evan K. Marshall and Arrabito Naval Architects. Conceived to be as “innovative and forward thinking as her new and exciting exterior design”, an entirely new design language for Ocean Alexander has been created, which will now be applied to a new series of OA yachts both larger and smaller than the 90r. “One of the key features with the 90R’s new exterior design, with her plum bow, is that we are able to increase the amount of interior volume considerably, that is normally available in the yacht with the length overall of 90 feet”, says Marshall. “This has allowed us in the sky lounge/pilot house to create a second lounging area that is equal to the main salon and truly captures the essence of what sky lounges on much larger yacht offer.”
Oceanco Launches 90m DreAMBoat In February 2019, Dutch shipyard Oceanco successfully launched 90m DreAMBoat, a first-time collaboration between Espen Øino and Terence Disdale Design. At 2950GT, the yacht accommodates up to 23 guests, with a further 33 crew, while the design emphasis is on large windows that fill the interior with natural light. A swimming pool features on the main deck, while a Jacuzzi is located on the sprawling partially-covered sundeck. A state-of-the-art IP operating system is included, as well as a full carbon canopy mast house. “It has been an intense project, but with some clear direction from the owner, excellent collaboration between Espen Øino, Terence Disdale Design and Oceanco, we have achieved a great deal and are poised to deliver a stunning yacht”, says Dan Jackson, owner’s rep.

ith its award-winning marinas, capable yards and catch-all array of services, Palma de Mallorca holds all the cards when it comes to accommodating yacht owners, captains and crew. Additional reasons behind the island’s maritime allure are its cyan waters and perfect sailing conditions, not to mention the ever-growing Palma Superyacht Show. The capital’s annual mustering of industry influencers and display of nautical eye-candy has gone from strength to strength since its 2013 launch. In fact, last year’s edition, which attracted a greater selection of bigger yachts and sought-after exhibitors saw an improved layout and catapulted the show into international acclaim.
Sphere of Influence The show’s upcoming edition, which takes place from 27 April to 1 May, is likely to further expand its sphere of influence. For starters, 2018’s floating bridge will again connect STP shipyard to Palma’s photogenic fisherman’s dock, facilitating a spacious walkway and circular route. Those that were present last year will agree that the 72m pontoon made it easier for visitors to get around the show and size up the various yachts on display. What’s more, Refit & Repair, the show’s dedicated B2B sector, will also benefit from a better lay-out this year. The bar/restaurant area will be moved in order to give Refit & Repair the attention it truly deserves: making a beeline for the stand you’re looking for will be a breeze and the new set-up will provide a better viewing experience overall.

Palma Superyacht Show.indd 10
Refit & Repair, now going into its third year, will feature more stands in comparison to last year: a total of 28 companies will be showcasing innovative products and/or talking potential clients through time-tested services. For example, Barco’s project managers are looking forward to bringing their proven track record in the (repair and refit) business forward while A+T Instruments’ tech-savvy team is keen to take visitors through their newly launched ‘Big Format display’.
the diverse selection of sail and motor yachts, both sale and charter, grows year by year.
Innovation and Expertise Just as Refit & Repair’s exhibitors will reveal cutting edge products and techniques, so too will the show’s other participating companies vie for visitors’ attention through innovation and expertise. From yacht insurance specialists to companies at the forefront of sail design, no less than 69 of yachting’s finest companies will be taking part in this seventh edition. Pantaenius and north Sails are two examples of such industry leaders, as are Southern Spars and Baltic yachts. Southern Spars will be present to discuss their mast, boom and rigging packages while Baltic yachts, builders of carbon fibre custom yachts, will be promoting the quality refit services they offer in Palma de Mallorca.
2018’s floating bridge will again connect stp shipyard to palma’s photogenic fisherman’s dock.
Increased Growth The show’s trademark relaxed atmosphere, another nautical ace up its sleeve, leaves little place for airs and graces. competitors are seen to talk shop over beers in the sunshine and the show’s many parties are predominantly casual, all-inclusive affairs. Whether this is because of

the event’s holiday-island setting or the organisers’ laidback, nononsense approach to superyacht events matters little, what looms larger is that exhibitors and visitors alike clearly relish the joviality that characterises the Palma Superyacht Show. Illustrative of the show’s laid-back ambiance is the return of Port Adriano’s FunFair. visitors not familiar with the FunFair’s whimsical characters need to be prepared to do double takes. For those wondering about how they’ll be caught off guard, let’s just say that if the actors’ costumes won’t catch your attention their hilarious mime-acts certainly will. yet, as enjoyable as its ambiance may be, the Palma Superyacht Show is more than just a friendly face. Its diverse selection of sail and motor yachts, both sale and charter, over 24m grows year by year. The show’s organisers are expecting to host 85 yachts this year, an increase of five boats compared to the show’s last edition. Sailing enthusiasts can look forward to being shown around recordbreaking performance cruisers while those that prefer the superlative luxuries of a motor yacht can snoop around commodious master cabins and state-of-the-art engine rooms.
the 43.6m svea, the largest and newest J Class to date, blends classic lines with grand prix racing technology.
MAGIC OF LED LIGHTING
Sailing Pedigree one of the sailing yachts that will be sure to impress is the 43.6m Svea, the largest and newest J class to date. Svea blends classic lines with grand prix racing technology and has already enjoyed the sweet taste of success: she won last year’s class title at the St. Barths Bucket. Super J Svea will be berthed next to the 35.2m nautor’s Swan odin, another technically advanced racing superyacht. Both remarkable boats are for sale with Burgess. Being able to get a taste for what it’s like to charter a yacht will give those new to yachting an added incentive to visit. not only can potential clients appraise charter yachts by mattress testing and scoping out their wine cellars or selection of water toys, they can grill the captain and crew about possible itineraries, how to keep the kids entertained and whether the chef’s able to prepare a lacto-vegetarian meal.

stablished in 1873, and forming part of Azimut|Benetti Group – the world’s largest privately-owned shipyard – Benetti delivered 32 yachts in the 40-60m size range between 2014-2018. However, 2019 promises to be a year with a difference for the Italian yard as it embarks on the launch of, not one, but three full-custom ‘gigayachts’.

The second of Benetti’s gigayachts with a length of 100m – the FB272 – launched in February 2019, while the third in the trio will be deliverd to its respective owner later in 2019.
In addition to requiring a dedicated team with cutting-edge technical, production, design and financial skills, the yard has invested over 15 million euros in its 300,000m2 production
Of the launch, Benetti’s CEO Franco Fusignani commented: “We are thrilled to see the launch of this beautiful gigayacht, the first of three currently under construction in parallel in Livorno. FB277 is, in reality, more beautiful and impressive than we could ever have possibly imagined. With this launch, we recognise the first essential step in strengthening our brand in order to offer the same outstanding high-end vessels we are already known for in the megayacht sector…This gigayacht puts Benetti on the map for building yachts of over 100m.”

The Age of the Gigayacht December 2018 saw the launch of the FB277, the first of the yard’s larger vessels, stretching to 107m and 3,300GT. It is the biggest yacht ever built in Italy by a private shipyard. Powered by a diesel-electric propulsion system, the yacht has a steel hull and an aluminium superstructure. Both the interior and exterior have been designed in-house by Benetti and managed by Imperial, acting as owner’s representative, build supervisor and yacht manager of the vessel. Key features include a large swimming pool on the sun deck, a grand piano, a spa with
Julia Stewart, Director at Imperial, added: “FB277 marks an important step in Imperial’s history by being not only the first and biggest superyacht ever delivered in Italy by a private shipyard, but also being one of the most exclusive vessel available for charter from Summer 2019 and beyond. FB277 is a major milestone for our industry, by her extraordinary proportions, her impressive high ceilings on

FOCUS ON ITALY both exterior and interior sides and the fantastic amenities she is carrying… We are proud to give birth to a successful superyacht, and we look forward to seeing her sporty, roaring lines cruising along the seven seas.”
The Bnow68 is the largest model in the new range.
New Initiatives To date, Benetti has specialised in building steel and aluminium superyachts from 45 to 80m, but in addition to its full custom capabilities, the yard has also introduced the Custom Now product range to its clients who desire the benefits of a custom design but with reduced delivery times. At present, Benetti offers four different lengths in this range – Bnow 50, Bnow 55, Bnow 63 and Bnow 68 – all of which have been designed collaboratively with British design studio RWD. Created to offer a modern onboard lifestyle by connecting indoor and outdoor spaces, Benetti’s advanced construction technology ensures short delivery times. The wave of new initiatives does not stop there, though. Geared towards a younger generation who are attracted by yachts that appeal to their lifestyle and interests, the yard has also recently launched Oasis 40M, Diamond 145 and Delfino 95, the fourth unit of which was launched in January 2018. These models are joined by the Mediterraneo 116, which carries on the success of the Classic category, and the Fast 125, which is fitted with the innovative Azipull Carbon AZP C65 propulsion system developed by Rolls Royce exclusively for this model.
The Bnow50 is the smallest in the range.
Reflecting developments in the yachting market, and the needs of differing yet precise types of owners, with this new wave of developments, Benetti states that it “intends to introduce new elements of style while remaining faithful to the fundamental principles that underpin its long history and tradition.

talian shipyard Cantiere delle Marche (CdM) has announced its first fully custom explorer yacht has hit the water in Ancona following the sale of the project back in 2017. Described by the shipyard as being an ‘extraordinary yacht’ thanks to her distinctive shape and features, K42 Audace also represents CdM’s entry into bespoke yacht builds. Providing a brief that asked for a “pure custom explorer yacht”, the owner reportedly intends to live on board his 42.8m vessel all year round. With this in mind, the entire yacht has been designed around the aim to create environments and amenities that perfectly fit the owner’s lifestyle.
Collaboration in Full Swing With naval architecture undertaken by Mauro Sculli and engineering by Sergio Cutolo of Hydro Tec, K42 Audace also benefits from the knowledge of Andrea Pezzini of Floating Life, who also acted as owner’s representative. CdM’s project manager Domenico Ranieri has worked in close collaboration with all involved.

talian shipyard Ocean King has unveiled its plans for a new 150 custom model – the Ocean Queen 150. A sub-500GT tri-deck full displacement motor yacht, with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, the new launch sees the yard move away from its previous explorerstyle vessels. It instead will focus on a vessel that centres around providing on board pleasure and enjoyment at sea. Offering accommodation for up to twelve guests in six cabins, and additional quarters for a crew of nine with a separate Captain’s cabin on the wheelhouse deck, the Ocean Queen 150 promises to be abundant with space for a yacht of her size. A generous full-beam main deck master suite is equipped with his/hers bathrooms, including showers and a corner tub, while an adjoining private office can also convert into a cosy cinema room. Large amounts of deck spaces provide plenty of exterior areas for socialising and entertaining, while inside large saloon areas allow for plentiful separate dining and lounge areas. A beach club completes the package, and offers on the water

Luxury Family Cruising Expected to reach a top speed of 15.5 knots while providing a comfortable cruise at 13 knots, and powered by two Caterpillar 1,650hp engines, the Ocean Queen 150 will reportedly have an ocean-crossing range on 70,000 litres of diesel. Developed in conjunction with Venetian design studio, Watermark Design, the interior is modern Italian-themed with rich dark wood and leather panelling complemented by light floorings and ceilings. Alberto Ballarin of Ocean King comments: “The Ocean Queen 150 has been developed with customer input and makes for a superbly spacious and luxurious family yacht that can cruise comfortably, offer all the very latest superyachting amenities and will really stand out in marinas from Portofino to St Tropez.”

ince being delivered to her owner in July 2018, DaR has scooped one coveted accolade after another. from the world yacht trophy award for yacht of the year to the Judges’ commendation at the 2019 boat international Design & innovation awards for best technical achievement, the applause just keeps on coming. it’s clear to see why. her ground-breaking design includes the latest advances in glass technology, and she is the first yacht in the netherlands to be given the official lloyd’s Register integrated bridge system (ibs) notation and designation. sporty and elegant, yet vast in size, when DaR glides into view, she can’t fail to impress. a behemoth of the seas in terms of internal volume, Oceanco’s 90m yacht boasts a surprisingly lean profile. more importantly, her modest-sized superstructure is completely finished in reflective glass, designed as one continuous surface stretching from the main deck to the sun deck. it’s an elaborate hint by exterior designer luiz de basto to the recurring theme of glass that plays a key role throughout. from the interior, the glass yields panoramic floor-to-ceiling views aft, port and starboard. she is a sight to behold.
Reflective Transparency conceived to maximise opportunities for outdoor living and to provide a direct contact with the marine environment, DaR’s profile has a unique sense of contrast and homogeneity between the dark glass and the white balconies. this in itself provides a constant exchange in shape and lines between the two elements, but it also belies the required engineering to achieve it. all of the glass used on DaR’s superstructure – almost 400m2 – has been meticulously applied with glue, with no use of mechanical fasteners. far from lightweight, it does, however, replace the usual amount of metal found on other superstructures of this size.

DAR does not feature any walkaround decks, and as such her custom interiors created by Nuvolari Lenard – which are modern and rich in contemporary textures – complement her exterior.
Marine Inspiration the specially treated glass affords the owners privacy from the outside and at the same time yields incredible views from the inside looking out. sweeping vistas and a tangible link to the sea have been important design elements from the off, and masterfully achieved by the likes of the upper deck glass bulwarks that allow for total visibility of the water when seated. “while one can certainly appreciate the grandeur of DaR from afar, the large scale of this yacht is not truly evident until you are close up”, says luiz de basto. “Once on board, there is a sense of flow and wellbeing that is generated from the entire design as a whole.”

DAR was conceived to maximise opportunities for outdoor living and to provide a direct contact with the marine environment.
“the strength of the glass has been calculated taking into account the motions in a seaway”, says Oceanco project manager erwin de looff. “the movement of the panels relative to the adjoining panels has been calculated for every single one. the glue process has been

the visible presence of the natural world permeates throughout and, says de basto, has always formed a central source of inspiration to the exterior styling. “DaR’s curved main superstructure is made of a black, continuous organic form that reminded me of a shark, so i decided to make the mast shaped like a fin, a dorsal fin, and everything else just flows from there”, he says. “when you see the boat from the top you see the wing stations are in the shape of a hammerhead shark.” indeed, DaR was known as project shark until her delivery.

The art of outfitting austrian outfitting specialist, list gc, has demonstrated just how much expertise it possesses in terms of craftsmanship and engineering with its latest work on board Oceanco’s 90m awardwinning DaR. contracted to fit out the entire crew quarters and luxury areas in the owner and guest quarters, list gc brought these exquisite interiors to life with extravagant fittings for the salon, lounge and bedrooms, as well as the bathrooms and dressing rooms. the project was successfully completed within less than two years. with interior design by novulari lenard, the outfitting undertaking included walls and furnishings with ornate glass surfaces and palladium within the dressing room of the owner’s suite. a delicate floral pattern was applied by hand in the verre églomisé technique in a process that lasted several months. the corridor walls are adorned with oak trees, which were diligently sculpted from plaster using a special spatula technique and then painted by hand, and an interplay of light and shadow was incorporated into the surface, resulting in a 3D effect that gives a certain depth to the space. DaR was debuted to the public in september at the monaco yacht show. since its delivery it has won the Judges´ commendation award for best technical achievement at the boat international Design & innovation awards 2019, as well as both best exterior Design and finest new superyacht award at the monaco yacht show 2018.

Interior Styling far from being a separate entity, the exterior design has been completely integrated with the interior layout. DaR does not feature any walkaround decks, and as such her custom interiors created by nuvolari lenard – which are modern and rich in contemporary textures – complement her exterior. tasked with an owner’s brief that requested an interior that was “a balanced combination of visual themes from nature, such as blossoms, feathers and sea life”, the vibrant design firm integrated numerous organic shapes in both DaR’s fixed and loose furniture that creates a bright and fresh interior. “following the owner’s brief, our design narrative is indeed grounded on the use of light timbers, bright colours and a special attention to even infinitesimally small details”, says valentina Zannier, head interior designer at nuvolari lenard. “we used rich fabrics and leathers that come to life via numerous talented artists with whom i had the pleasure of working. the art glass on board, the sculpted leather panels, the metal decoration and the perfect execution from the builders made this project an example of balance and harmony which we believe will last

DaR has a highly specific interior layout, which is strictly linked to the exterior shapes. the inside and outside often relate to each other, says Zannier. “each deck has a different character, yet the finishes, colours and moods create a continuity and again, nature links all the spaces through curves, and flowing shapes.”

don’t. Her masterful sun deck sprawls from bow to stern in a yawning expanse of teak. An 8m x 2.5m swimming pool with a fully glazed aft end and a glass-bottomed skylight is what first greets guests when they ascend to the sundeck via the yacht’s central spiral staircase, allowing “flickering water-filtered light to cascade all the way down to the lower deck”, says Peder Eidsgaard. Life is made easy with a wellstocked bar, dayhead and shower all neatly integrated into the free-flowing design, as well as a retractable sun screen for those hotter days on board. But it’s the design elements that aren’t instantly noticeable that make life not just easy, but comfortable. When you sit at the bar, you’ll find there is just the right distance between your stool and the seating area pool sides to prop up your feet if required. Whether relaxing by the pool or lounging on the sun pads forward, sight lines to an unforgettable horizon have been guaranteed every time. In fact, this rule applies throughout the yacht, from the raised bed in the master suite, to the private owner’s deck, to the large floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows in the flexible living areas; it has all been devised to ensure optimum vistas.
Neptune Wonders There’s little question as to the best view on board, though. Elandess’ sub-waterline Neptune Lounge – only the second in existence – gives spectacular access to life above and below the
water. Dark blue double tiered seating allows for an underwater theatre display through the huge 3m tall and 100mm thick glass windows. When underway the views are dramatic and special underwater lighting heightens the seascape experience at night. Working closely alongside Harrison Eidsgaard, who also designed the interior, the experienced owner’s ideas (such as a 10m drive-in tender garage) and design preferences have been artfully integrated into her contemporary and flexible layout. Guest accommodation is split across six staterooms, which provide the rare option to be converted into three larger suites. The owner’s cabin on the main deck is equipped with a large office, en suite with central bath, private deck area and his and hers wardrobes. The use of Cipollini verde marble in the master bathroom showers is beautifully complemented by the addition of a bespoke dressing table by Nature Squared, inlaid with mother of pearl.
The masterful sun deck sprawls from bow to stern in a yawning expanse of teak.
Artwork Abounds The family’s personality is reflected in the bold and colourful artwork all around, from Murano glass sculptures to mother of pearl and plaster walls by DKT Artworks to hand-laid straw marquetry. The owner’s vision was detailed from the start, and incorporated each room. Unusually, Elandess incorporates no less than four lounges. The 2.8m high sky lounge is where the family spend most of their time, and has a relaxed New England feel to it. The observation lounge features richer materials, to give it a The master suite with raised bed.

more “clubby” feel, while the Neptune lounge is a fun area. The main lounge provides a more formal space for entertaining. “No two spaces are the same”, says Nicholas Houghton of Harrison Eidsgaard. “It’s not a copy and paste throughout the yacht, every space has a slight quirk, a slight difference. That’s one of the key qualities of Elandess, and I think it adds a lot of drama and unexpected joy.”
Hidden Levels The location of the wheelhouse is a quirk in itself. It sits nestled between the upper deck and the sun deck, and is essentially a raised pilot house. To achieve this, the wheelhouse is half a deck below the sun deck positioned underneath the swimming pool sun pads, and half a deck above the upper deck in the forward section. “It’s a hidden level which has allowed

us to create a sleek exterior profile”, says Houghton. “It also means that the observation lounge takes pride of place on the foredeck, rather than the traditional wheelhouse location, allowing for a huge private foredeck with hidden from view seating areas.” Elandess’ unique naval architecture was developed by Abeking & Rasmussen’s in-house team, while Burgess Technical Services acted as the owner’s representatives. “The clients gave us clear direction, but they also challenged us and asked us to be bold with our design, colours and textures”, says Houghton. “Elandess is not for charter, it’s a very personal yacht, and they wanted their personality to shine through.”

aval architect philippe briand has found success in recent years with his Vitruvius series of yachts. the likes of exuma and galileo g have set a high benchmark, but for the fifth yacht in the Vitruvius range, 58m najiba built by feadship de Vries and launched in december 2018, briand and his team were faced with a different set of criteria.

“this is a yacht built for two families”, says briand. “they are highly experienced owners – they have owned several yachts – but importantly, najiba is their first fully bespoke build.”

A Yacht of Two Halves central to the project was the owners’ specification to build a large boat that both families can enjoy together. “the presence of two owners is integral to the design, as we not only had to consider how the flow and layout of the boat would work, but we were required to accommodate two master staterooms that are equal in space and ambience”, says briand. their desire to build a bespoke yacht with a naval architect’s approach was also key, says briand, who relies on his vast

NAVAL ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN experience designing sailing yachts to create something a little different from the norm. “we always begin our projects by organising the layout and space planning first, so on this occasion we agreed on both the internal proportions and the hull lines from the off, the latter of course being fundamental to any yacht project”, says briand. “it’s important to note that the naval architecture and internal layout were worked on in parallel, as we strongly believed that this was the best way to achieve a successful design that delivered the required onboard experience for both owners. that is how the style of najiba evolved, and from there, we worked on ensuring that she is also highly efficient in the water.”
Simple Lines distinguished and lithe, najiba certainly lives up to her name, meaning ‘noble’. briand’s distinctive minimalist lines create a simple, elegant profile, while the running surface provides excellent seakeeping qualities. the main deck has a long midsection of glass extending up toward the foredeck, with an open area aft for entertainment, while the upper deck has a second salon in the centre, with an open sundeck above. najiba is the second-largest aluminium vessel built by de Vries. “based on our extensive experience, we ensured that najiba’s design provided comfort at sea, as well as fuel efficiency”, says briand “All the Vitruvius hulls are highly characteristic featuring the plumb line bow; it’s become a signature of Vitruvius, and the starting point is always focusing on the point where the hull will penetrate the water. najiba’s hull benefits from our vast knowledge of sailing yacht design; it’s a careful balance between art, design and efficiency. once we have the hull lines, the rest of the boat follows in the same spirit.”
Najiba’s characteristic Vitruvius bow.
designed with graceful proportions, serving as a floating connector between science and art, najiba is also ultra-efficient. with a fuel consumption of 11.5 litres per nautical mile at a cruising speed of 12 knots, this 880gt yacht can achieve a range of 4,400 nautical miles.
Functional Aesthetics “we keep it simple and pure, and our designs are without superfluous elements. All of the lines in our yacht designs are there for a reason, they serve a purpose, and are not included just for the sake of design. if something has no function, we don’t include it”, says briand. “we try to be as minimalist as possible, as again this improves efficiency, but also in terms of aesthetics. this discipline stems from my

the main deck has a long midsection of glass extending up toward the foredeck, with an open area aft for entertainment, while the upper deck has a second salon in the centre, with an open sundeck above.
“we have to consider people’s experience on board”, adds briand. “their line of sight, how they will interact with the environment, it is fundamental to their level of enjoyment when on board. we spent a lot of time devising various different window tints – they are not the same throughout the yacht. black-out tints are needed in the cabins, while the bridge requires transparent glass, and then during the day we tried to shade the interior from the glare of natural light without hindering the fantastic views. it’s balancing design with function.”
Interior Style najiba’s interior by studio liaigre continues briand’s paired back vision. clean white surfaces teamed with hardwoods create the impression of being in a beachside villa. in addition to the two owners’ suites, one of which can be converted into a tV room if required, there are four further cabins accommodating eight guests, and ample quarters for 14 crew.
background as a sailing yacht designer, where lines have to be straight and simple.” najiba’s transparent glass guard rail is another example of a feature that looks simple, but requires architectural knowledge to know how to design it correctly. “many shipyards would believe it’s not possible to build a guard rail out of glass

that is strong enough to withstand the power of the sea, and comply with all regulations”, smiles briand. “we worked very closely with feadship to make sure that we made this possible – it wasn’t easy, and we spent three months on this alone – but i felt it was highly necessary from both a design point of view and for the owners’ experience on board.”
“the interior features teak and white, and very little else. even the washbasins are made from teak”, says briand. “there are few auxiliary objects, again, harping back to the elegance of simple lines and architecture. the focus is on the scenery. “when designing anything, i always ask, ‘why is this here?’, summarises briand. “if i can’t justify it, i won’t include it, and i maintain that discipline throughout the whole design process.”

Why is it so important to have an independent HVAC consultant for new builds and refits? Clients must have the option to receive advice on their HVaC system that is not based on sales. Synergy is an independent company, completely unrelated to any supplier or engineering company. we are there to support our client’s needs and requests. our consultants are able to tell the exact pros and cons of the products, equipment or system choices, and we rate these items against the client’s demands. based on these findings, the client can then make their decision. yacht building is one of the most highly demanding industries, and most of the time our clients are not looking for an ‘off the shelf’ adjusted system, but a bespoke HVaC system. aside from the technical aspects of HVaC systems, there is also the integration process to consider. HVaC is integral to almost all disciplines on board a yacht, and we are there
to ensure it is smoothly integrated and maintain control of the complex process.
HVAC systems are the largest space and energy consuming system on board a yacht –what are the biggest developments that have happened in recent years? Very little has evolved with HVaC systems over the past decade, and that’s not a good thing! the yachting industry needs challengers to come and improve on the HVaC systems that are currently offered. every day clients are delving deeper into their HVaC options, mainly thanks to raised awareness around topics such as emissions, energy saving, and system efficiency. at present, we have witnessed an increase in the number of waste heat recovery systems being used on yachts. this is already a step forward in lower energy consumption, but for the near future i predict that energy savings and air quality will become key points of focus.

What are the biggest improvements that captains can make to HVAC systems in order to save energy? from a technical point of view, i would recommend having a systems survey undertaken, which will cover all options of a technical equipment and automation systems upgrade if required. the return on investment can sometimes be made within one or two seasons depending on several parameters, of course. alternatively, a quick and easy option is awareness training for the captains, technicians and crew. that would help them to understand simple yet critical information, such as when to use the different economic modes available in the system, cleaning the system on a regular basis, replacing inefficient components, etc.
When did Synergy become part of the Bond TM Group, and how does this partnership strengthen the services that you provide? to give a bit of history, i first met the bondtm

heating. Probably the most common problems are that the crew don’t understand exactly how the system works. Changing temperature settings takes some time to respond and we see them making huge adjustments at the controls that will result in ramping up the fans and airflows, or keeping the doors opened which destabilises the system, and most importantly the overpressure. Overpressure is what prevents salt and humidity from entering the yacht and destroying sensitive interior materials, electronic devices and artwork. So, it’s not temperature but humidity that is actually our biggest challenge. When you don’t control the humidity the risk of mould and health issues grow. A well-executed climate system is critical for any owner’s or guest’s satisfaction while onboard.
How can a fully integrated HVAC system reduce a yacht’s carbon footprint? I wish there was a simple answer to this, but there are a lot of things that need to be considered. As the HVAC system is the largest energy consuming system on board (besides propulsion) it stands to reason that this is where the largest energy savings can be made. For new builds, energy saving options can be integrated in the design, but for refits it depends on the age of the yacht and the available space. To lower the yacht’s carbon footprint the main areas would be waste heat recovery systems, lower air amounts, better insulation, cooling on

demand and a smart HVAC system design. Smart automation and monitoring will be a good solution as well.
How often should an HVAC system be reviewed? If you follow the given maintenance intervals, a yearly inspection would be advisable. This would measure the quality of the air, clean the system where necessary and provide a visual inspection of the equipment. There is a big difference in keeping your system running and having good maintenance.
If you could give owners and captains one piece of advice regarding their HVAC systems, what would it be? For owners I would advise them to be very clear on their expectations, don’t take things for granted. Talk to a specialist who is able to ask the right questions. For example, don’t expect an AV room to be 21°C because it is part of the interior as the HVAC supplier might see it as a technical room and allow for a temperature nearer to 27°C. But, asking the right questions as a client is far more difficult than when a specialist asks these questions. For captains, I would advise them to know the specifications and the basics of climate control. HVAC is not only about temperature but is integral for comfort and quality, too.

MARINE PROPULSION
Pushing Forward THE 84M MOTOR YACHT WHITE RABBIT, THE WORLD’S LARGEST TRIMARAN SUPERYACHT, WAS DELIVERED TO HER OWNERS IN NOVEMBER 2018. BUILT by Australian shipyard Echo Yachts and designed by Sam Sorgiovanni, it boasts excellent manoeuvrability thanks to a state-of-the-art propulsion system by German manufacturer Schottel.

eadquartered in Spay, Rhine, Schottel is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of propulsion and steering systems for ships and offshore applications. Founded in 1921, the company has been developing and manufacturing azimuth propulsion and
Reduced noise and vibration, high efficiency as well as savings in space and weight are important requirements for yachts manoeuvring systems, complete propulsion systems with power ratings of up to 30MW, and steering systems for vessels of all sizes and types, for about 65 years. Equipped with Schottel’s low-noise and lowvibration azimuth thrusters, two pump jets and one rim thruster, 84m trimaran White Rabbit guarantees a smooth and comfortable ride.
Optimal Manoeuvrability The manoeuvring system of the tri-hulled yacht consists of one electric rim thruster type SRT

800 elastically fitted in the bow and delivering an input power of 200kW. Additionally, two electrically driven pump jets type SPJ 57 RD with an input power of 200kW are elastically mounted in the stern. In combination, the space-saving thrusters – all manufactured by Schottel – provide optimal manoeuvrability on command. “Reduced noise and vibration, high efficiency as well as savings in space and weight are important requirements for yachts”, says Andreas Witschel, Sales Director for Cruise, Ferry & Yachts at Schottel. “With the Schottel rim thruster and Schottel pump jet our portfolio suits these demands. The pump jets are completely enclosed by the vessel’s hull and create no additional drag or resistance. It is ideal for vessels frequently operating in DP mode or cruise vessels and yachts with high demands on comfort.”
Efficiency and Environmentally Forward One of Schottel’s latest developments is the rim thruster, an electric propulsion system without a gearbox or a drive shaft. Superyacht 100: The Inside Track In January 2019, the global press descended on london’s May FaIr hotel For a day spent gettIng up close and personal wIth the superyacht industry leaders. t’s a rare occurrence, being able to speak to the world’s leading shipyards, designers and brokerage houses, all on the same day, all under one roof. but on tuesday 15 January at the london May fair hotel, that is exactly what happened. a biennial event hosted by superyachts.com, and sponsored in 2019 by burgess, superyacht 100 provides coveted time with senior management from the superyacht industry’s elite. comprising a full day of workshops whereby three to four international press at a time were faced with top tier industry representatives for intimate group discussions and Q&as, the jam-packed day delivered on trends, launches and new initiatives.
Green Initiatives In Feadship’s sessions popular trends within the yachting sector were the topic of conversation. environment and exploration were nonsurprisingly of interest, while the latest on the

shipyard’s ‘green’ amsterdam yard created to house the build of yachts of up to 160m was a key focus showing both expansion and considerate innovation. Farouk nefzi, marketing and brand director at Feadship, spoke of owners who are “investing heavily in scientific and philanthropic initiatives”. the threat to our environment is a threat to yachting itself, he said, but that it is people’s passion for the planet that is driving innovation. “we are witnessing clients leading by example when building their own yachts”, he said. “this means implementing new technologies and innovative features. It is relevant to owners far more than charter clients, and is yet to hit the charter market. but a yacht is like a floating business card, and if you don’t show willing to reduce your footprint, it can be turned into a negative.” nefzi also commented on the younger generation of yacht owners – Millennials who are “less private” thanks to their being “of the social media

digital era” – not to mention the rise in popularity of explorer yachts and an increased interest in travelling to new destinations. “different regions are being explored, such as asia’s phuket, as well as croatia and Montenegro”, he said. “this is prompting real estate and marinas being built; infrastructure developments triggered by new destinations being the focus.”
Changing Ownership peter lürssen, ceo of the german shipyard, also spoke of more owners getting “actively involved” in marine conservation, as well as spending more time on board their yachts – sometimes up to eight or nine months at a time. but his main observation was the trend for owners to downsize their vessels. “think about what it costs to build and own a 100m+ yacht”, he said. “younger generations inherit the family money, but when shared among siblings it is considerably smaller than the parent’s amount. they are not prepared to invest as much money into yachting. we see the wealth being divided, and automatically this is increasing the number of owners but the amount to be spent on an individual yacht is less. having said that, these people still want a

Design Details on the design front, journalists were wowed by the chance to sneak a peek of the sketches
from some of h2 yacht design’s most impressive projects, including the largest explorer yacht to be conceived, reV (research and exploration Vessel). the studio’s owner, Jonny horsfield, responsible for some of the most show-stopping silhouettes on the water including the iconic al lusail, spoke of the divide within the explorer market, as well as citing the “explorer mentality”. “owners want to be able to go further afield and for longer, so the yacht needs to be built with capacity for fuel, food and water”, he explains, “but they also carry a lot more with them. they want more toys, so that they can do more stuff – probably a helicopter to drop in and out – but the explorer market is going in two different directions. there are superyacht explorers or commercial explorers, which are more like supply ships.” horsfield confirmed that there is a surprising

number of clients who are now interested in going in the direction of commercial vessels, looking to build explorers like REV, but that for now, 75m-90m is the sweet spot size for explorer vessels thanks to the 3,000GT weight threshold.
Brokerage News As one of the world’s leading superyacht brokerages, Burgess sparked huge interest among the attending press. The brand’s CEO, Jonathan Beckett was present throughout the day to answer questions on global reach, worldwide audiences and what it takes to lead the build process of a Top 100 superyacht. Beckett also gave a more personal insight into the world of yachting, discussing the various ways that it has changed over the years, and the again noting the rise of the Millennial yachtie. “The younger generation is much more about the water, having access to the water, and having toys on board”, he said. “People want to do different things these days, like deep cruising in the Pacific, or charters to Greenland and Galapagos. The old style of yachting was cruising around the Mediterranean, but the new style of yachting is to be more adventurous.”
www.s u p e r y a c h t - i n dustr y.c om
Superyacht 100 Event.indd 55
Beckett also spoke of “experience led” charter destinations. “They’re looking for something that is more of a talking point than the traditional milk run, such as a charter centred around kite surfing”, he explained. “They want to know where the kites can be stored, what launching platform does the yacht have, what areas have optimum weather conditions. That trend is beginning to emerge now.” Despite the company putting concerted efforts into furthering the charter market, it still only accounts for 25% of Burgess’ entire turnover. For Beckett, charter and yacht management are more predictable sale models than yacht sales and new builds, but he believes that as the desire for experience-driven charters and explorer vessels continue to grow, the charter market will continue to respond.
Building Giants Other representatives from the world’s leading shipyards included Fincantieri, Benetto, Nobiskrug and Oceanco, each of whom created dramatic displays which included some of the most intricate yacht models of Top 100 vessels. Ending the day with refreshments, talk turned to ideas for new stories and even whole issues

Featuring interviews with the main representatives from the day’s workshops, it gave great insight into what it takes to build a Top 100 superyacht, and the many companies integral to the entire industry.

Perfect Partnership founded in 2016, drone defence believes that drone technology is going to change the way humanity views, interacts with and will eventually move around the planet. however, the company has recognised the risks posed by illegal drone use and has developed a range of field-tested products and services to combat the emerging problem. to date, the company has numerous
installations protecting critical infrastructure, Vips, prisons and superyachts, and has developed multi-award-winning proprietary products to safely mitigate drone related security risks. richard Gill, ceo of drone defence says: “We’ve developed technology that secures yachts, buildings, vehicles and larger infrastructure from drone incursions. it’s great to be announcing our relationship with MarineGuard, an organisation with a great reputation in the superyacht industry, and they understand the importance of technological solutions in combating security threats.” Webb adds: “as a leading superyacht security provider it was essential that we continue to review and respond to the changing threats and technologies in support of our clients and their security. the technology available from drone defence, together with our expertise in marine security system design and installation, will allow us to address this threat in the marine market.”
Multiple Solutions
Drone Defence software.
drone defence has developed a number of solutions to provide superyachts with detection and countermeasure technology for complete protection. detection utilises leading-edge software-defined radio technology and deep learning algorithms to deliver real-time drone detection capability, providing superior range, reliability and performance over traditional detection methods. drone defence’s countermeasure systems are based on similar radio frequency technology with fixed or mobile variants providing an effective ‘no drone zone’ around the yacht, which drones are unable to penetrate.
