news in brief Benetti Maintains Pace Within its Class Category In April 2019, Benetti launched and delivered two yachts in its Class category – the seventh Fast 140, the BF207, was launched in Viareggio, and the seventh Fast 125, the BF107, was delivered to her owner. Both models are known for their D2P_Displacement to Planing hulls and are exterior designed by Stefani Righini and interior styled by RWD.

Columbus Yachts Enters Gigayacht Segment Italian shipyard Columbus Yachts, part of the Palumbo Group, has announced the launch of its first ‘gigayacht’ stretching 120m. The investment follows the success of the Columbus Classic 80 and is said to be a natural evolution of the 80m design. Designed by Hydro Tec, the concept features a large aft beach club, with spa, gym, bathing platforms on both sides, and a pool that sits beneath the glass-bottomed deck pool. Top speed is estimated at 20kn, while the range is expected to be around 7,000Nm at a cruising speed of 16kn.

Feadship Set to Rebuild 1954 Istros Feadship has embarked on a major rebuild of the 1954 motor yacht Istros, giving the 42m yacht an all-new aluminium superstructure while retaining the original hull. A new engine room will be constructed to house twin C18 main engines, a C4.4 diesel generator and a Capstone DC 65 diesel Micro Turbine generator, and a family-oriented and childfriendly interior has been developed together with the highly experienced owner. Originally built by Amsterdam Shipyard Ltd. G. de Vries Lentsch Jr. it was at the time of its launch one of the largest motor yachts built in the Netherlands. The all-new Istros is due to be relaunched before the summer of 2020.

Ramble on Rose Departs from Icon Yachts Following an extensive winter refit, 60m Ramble on Rose has now departed Dutch shipyard Icon Yachts. The refit included a new exterior paint job and new glazing with custom-made tinted glass for added privacy. Interior updates include the installation of a new bridge, new bespoke oak flooring in the owner and guest areas, and a complete renovation of the crew accommodation and recreation areas. “The departure of Ramble on Rose from Harlingen this month marks another successful superyacht refit at Icon Yachts”, said Jacob de Boer, Project Manager at Icon Yachts. | Read more on superyacht-industry.com

news in brief Strong Turnover Under New Management for MCI UK-based supplier Marine Components International (MCI) has reported an increase in turnover by a quarter in the last 12 months under new management. MCI managing director Andy Scott, who took over the Poole headquartered company in 2017, said growth is being driven by orders for its American-made Bennett trim trabs systems with customers including boat builders Princess Yachts and Sunseeker. “MCI is a well-established and well-known company with a good client base”, says Mr Scott, “but it was in need of modernising. We have introduced a range of improvements including better stock rotation and shorter lead-in times to offer customers more value and better service.”

Brigadoon Wins Moonen Yachts’ 36m motor yacht Brigadoon scooped the award for Best Yacht in the Semi-Displacement or Planing Motor Yachts – 33m to 39.9m category at the World Superyacht Awards 2019. Wolz Nautic Signs Contract to Fit Out REV

Yacht Club de Monaco and Torqeedo have joined forces in a bid to eliminate fossil fuels at the Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge. For the sixth annual challenge on 2-6 July, Yacht Club de Monaco has banned all fossil fuels and asked competitors, as well as the Monegasque community, to strive for zero emissions during the five-day event. Torqeedo, the event’s technical sponsor, will ensure that all boats involved in the organisation of the event are also 100% electric. German-based flooring specialist Wolz Nautic has announced the signing of a contract for the production of the entire wooden deck for 182m REV, the world’s largest and most advanced research and expedition vessel. The agreement includes, among other things, the use of a long-term tested, double-modified wood type for the decking, together with a weight- and noise-reducing 3D cork as levelling material. In addition to approximately 2,815m2 of wooden decking, Wolz Nautic will also be manufacturing handrails with a total length of around 876m.

lways a mainstay in yachting, holland is showing no signs of slowing down. delivering over 1.5 billion euros worth of 30-metre-plus yachts to owners around the world, the specialist yards in the netherlands also have a further 60 superyachts at various stages of construction.

this is anchored, of course, by Feadship’s new facility in amsterdam, which opened in May 2019, and with hisWa holland Yachting group celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2019, the year is proving to be a strong one. “this facility will allow us to build new Feadships up to 160m long and 22m wide”, explains Feadship director, Jan-Bart Verkuyl. “Combined with the second giant hall now being built at the

Feadship Makkum yard, it significantly enhances our options for clients”. “the fact that this new yard in amsterdam will be opened by her Majesty Queen Máxima illustrates how important the dutch superyacht sector is to our country”, says hisWa holland Yachting group export director, Jeroen sirag. “the netherlands has a wealth of expertise across the spectrum of yacht building and equipment supplies, all within a radius of just 200 km from each other.

Future Proofed leading dutch superyacht companies are reported to have foreseen industry trends in advance and are preparing accordingly. according to superyacht times, six dutch yards

launched eighteen superyachts over 30m in length in 2018 between them. they had an estimated value of some eUr 1,556,000,000, which means the average superyacht cost around eUr 86 million. new yacht sales were also buoyant, with orders being placed for another seventeen motor yachts and two sailing yachts in the netherlands. this brings the total number of new builds underway to 60, thirteen of which are longer than 80m. according to sirag: “these figures showcase the scaling up of orders from clients looking to have their vision for large superyachts translated into reality at the highest possible quality level. the average value of the 2018 deliveries is a record figure, one which reflects the extraordinary degree of sophistication of these vessels and the ongoing readiness of wealthy individuals to come to the netherlands and invest in the finest yachts money can buy. “and our offer goes beyond new builds alone. owners and their captains are also increasingly seeing holland as a prime destination for refits and major maintenance activities. this is reinforced by the growing popularity of the northern european superyacht route as ever more superyachts

New Horizons in addition, other major companies are reported to announce new facilities in the amsterdam region in the coming months, aimed at meeting growing demand among current and new customers. sirag welcomes these developments, which will bring a greater diversity of yacht-related services to the area. “the hisWa holland Yachting group entered into a partnership with port of amsterdam in 2017 to put the dutch capital on the map as a superyacht destination for owners and a business location for yacht builders and suppliers. now, in our golden jubilee year, we can see this strategy bearing fruit for all parties concerned. these latest developments and the excellent delivery and sales figures illustrate how the dutch are continuing to set the benchmark for the global superyacht world”.

FOCUS ON THE NETHERLANDS

Leap of Faith NomiNated for a World Superyacht aWard 2019, Balk Shipyard’S exteNSive refit of m/y dancing hare is a floating example of the yard’s technical expertise.

A

ny refit is a testament to an owner’s love for their yacht and the sheer determination to obtain as much enjoyment from a yacht as possible. often difficult, but always an art, a good refit maintains the heart and soul of the original vessel – the two true things that make a yacht a home – and yet updates it to a level of contemporary convenience and appeal. in october 2018, m/y dancing hare (ex-lady mona k) arrived at Balk shipyard for an extensive seven-month refit. kk Superyachts engaged for the refit, and the challenge commenced. the lavish interior was originally designed by the late, great Jon Bannenberg. Beautiful in its entirety, time has elapsed since her launch in 1986 by amels, and today it called for an entire refurbishment. the 57m also received a complete overhaul of all technical installations and equipment, bringing the vessel fully up to date to the latest standards.

An Owner’s Vision integral to the owner’s vision was an improved ambience when sat appreciating the view on the bridge deck. keen to maintain a connection to the sea, but also requiring greater protection from the elements, Balk Shipyard installed glass panels all around the exterior deck space, satisfying the owner’s enjoyment of the space. in addition to the renewed bridge deck, the already spacious sundeck underwent a significant extension, lengthening it by a considerable four metres. the main deck has been fully reorganised and is now one large, spatial area ideal for entertaining guests as much as enjoying in a private, more intimate setting. all of the above modifications provide a greatly improved onboard atmosphere and complement the owner’s lifestyle and preferences.

Recognition for Refits in recognition of the extensive refit work that has been designed and executed with a sympathetic attitude to the yacht’s heritage but with a contemporary aesthetic that complements it greatly, dancing hare was among the selected few nominated for a World Superyacht award in 2019 (which took place in may). listed in the category of rebuilt/refit/ conversion yachts, the nomination itself was recognition itself from the judging panel. daan Balk, ceo of Balk Shipyard, commented: “m/y dancing hare has always been an iconic and revolutionary yacht by the time when she was launched in 1986, that is why i felt (and still feel) honoured and proud to have the chance to get the opportunity to show what Balk shipyard is capable of. to be selected and trusted to get her back in her finest shape possible and that we have succeeded. and now i am even more proud that we have been nominated, she deserves it!”.

ROCK

AN EXPLORER YACHT LIKE NO OTHER, MOTOR YACHT ROCK IS THE SUV OF THE SEAS.

aunched (and sold to her current owner) at the 2018 Cannes Boat Show where she made her international debut, ROCK is defined by her voluminous open plan layout and uninterrupted sight lines. In short, she is the yachting world’s first pocket rocket. Vripack is a yacht design studio made strong through its extensive naval architecture and engineering experience.

From the moment it opened its doors in 1961, Vripack’s approach to design has been governed by the playful interaction between form and function. With a portfolio that represents over 7,000 designs, Vripack has been able to evolve its processes to be as efficient and as effective as possible. Leveraging its design philosophy that is informed by a creative, holistic, and

collaborative approach, Vripack partnered with Turkish yard Evadne and project managers Tufan and Brothers to collaborate on ROCK. In order to draw a radical new future-proof style Vripack implemented the use of marble into the design. The combination between the masculinity of the stone and the feminine shapes of the yacht were spot on. In addition, the studio’s design team (combining design, naval architecture and engineering from day one) created the right tool set to make ROCK a true Vripack explorer. The result is robust and spacious; ROCK boasts 20% more internal volume in square metres than any other comparable 24m yacht. “Enhancing the open plan layout, the positioning of furniture is more like a modern loft than a traditional yacht,” says Vripack designer, Robert de Vries. “On paper, it creates an a-symmetric layout which at first sight startles you, yet you don’t experience your time on board that way. When you actually use the yacht at sea it all makes sense.”

contrast with maple wood finishes and angular 3D shapes, ROCK truly serves as an inviting home from home. In addition to an interior that is akin to a contemporary loft apartment, ROCK possesses a high straight bow to intercept rough seas and a low aft for easy access to the water. This masterfully-designed continuous connection to the sea is a design detail that is carried throughout, explains de Vries. “We added a lot of glass on board, with full height windows that deliver uninterrupted views wherever you are on board. The dining area features one of the largest glass panels found on board a 24m yacht, providing panoramic vistas, while in the owner’s cabin a private terrace is complemented by a sweeping 180-degree view.”

Enticing Haven Three further guest cabins and a Jacuzzi on the sun deck complete the luxurious package, creating a sumptuous and enticing haven. The owner intends on spending many weeks living on board, cruising the intimate ports of the Mediterranean. “We kept her length in a fashion to be able to get in virgin areas of Mediterranean,” explains De Vries.

My Rock.indd 19

Vripack used light-coloured woods, white walls, and off-white decor across the interior, employing loose furniture in the saloon to give it a studio appearance. A wall in the master suite folds down into a terrace for two, providing arguably the most unencumbered view in any master stateroom. “When on board, the family will always be facing the sea. That’s how we designed her,” says de Vries.

Explorer Capabilities Featuring a Fast Displacement steel hull and aluminium superstructure, ROCK reaches a rapid top speed of 17 knots, and a respectable cruising speed of 12 knots. Powered by two CAT C12 engines at 1,000hp, she boasts a Transatlantic range of 3,500Nm. “Vripack’s unique working structure, which provides a holistic approach to the design of a yacht, ensures that we produce better boats in less time,” explains de Vries. “Our involvement in the entire process of designing the safest and most durable yachts ultimately ensures that owners and their guests feel at home at sea.”

zure waters and clear skies have secured the Mediterranean as the go-to cruising ground for superyachts in the summer season, while the warmer climates and tropical beaches have made the Caribbean the traditional preferred winter destination. But for all-year-round cruising in enticingly warm waters, where service is second to none, and end-to-end luxury paves the way for an unrivalled charter experience, Thailand is hard to beat, says Jean-Marc Poullet, Chairman of Burgess in Asia.

Where does the growth in Asia lie? It’s relatively uneasy to predict, even in a place like Phuket which is going to become the epicentre of yachting in Asia. Yacht Haven Marina can take up to 10-15 yachts, some of which are 100m+. Similarly, for charter, in 2018-19 we have had some really high quality boats in the area, such as Lady E, Talisman Maiton, My Sky and Titania – they picked up a few charters each, but again it’s not like there was an invasion of charter guests, which is itself a large part of the area’s appeal. The Asian population is at some point going to be the driving force of this activity in Asia. At present, it is still at the very beginning of the discovery phase, but our experience tells us that once Asian clients charter a yacht, they love it. Burgess in Asia recently secured a mainland Chinese charter for a week on board Titania, and interestingly enough, we have had two Asian clients who tried chartering a yacht once, loved it and then bought a yacht.

What is the game plan for furthering the knowledge of Thailand has a cruising ground? The first steps are the biggest obstacle. It’s incredibly difficult because people don’t have the cultural exposure to yachting. On the other hand, there are two factors that I have observed and find exciting for the future of yachting. In Asia, when you look at the big families and the type of occasions that they love,

Jean Marc Poullet, Chairman of Burgess in Asia

In addition, Asian clients (especially those from mainland China), love to visit places that are unpolluted. There is this notion that holidaying on an island is the ultimate destination, which is why Phuket is so popular. The trend for mainland Chinese to holiday in Phuket is huge, and flies in the face of stereotypes that suggest they prefer to not holiday in sunny destinations. When you put the three circles of interest together – cruising, diving and fishing, and unpolluted areas – you find that yachting is in the centre.

Why do you think yachting hasn’t caught on in Asia before now?

cruise ships are high on the agenda. It’s something that is very established in the culture, and Asian HNWI’s are happy to take large groups of 20-30 people on a cruise ship – in the Mediterranean and throughout the world. Both diving and fishing are popular sports in Thailand, and for good reason because the whole region is a fabulous diving and fishing ground. White Rabbit, for example, is a pure diving and fishing boat, owned by a fishing family.

Burgess Thailand.indd 22

When we have Asian guests on board who are discovering yachting for the first time, they always love the experience. But yachting is not part of the historical culture. It’s therefore integral that we give Asian clients more exposure to it. The only way to do that is to get people on board a yacht to experience it for themselves. The challenge is not about educating a massive population in Asia, it is simply getting individuals to experience being on board, and that takes time.

How far along that process are you? So far, it has been the hard slog of meeting people, convincing them to do it again, and then

waiting for the enthusiasm to spread via word of mouth. Charter requests undoubtedly come from personal recommendations, and it can catch fire very quickly. For me, Phuket is the epicentre of the solution, because the cruising grounds are fabulous. Anantara is the Riviera, behind is Phang Nga Bay, which is a national park with beautiful rock formations, and the south, which is Koh Phi Phi, Krabi and Langkawi. The cruising ground anchored by the Anantara resorts and Layan Residences by Anantara stretches 100 miles from the top of Phuket down to Langkawi. It’s not huge, but it’s incredibly rich and diverse in terms of the things that can be done and experienced. It’s already clear that culturally Phuket is accepted by Asian visitors as a place that is totally ‘Asian’, and by that I mean authentic Thai food, fresh produce from the sea, close proximity to the mainland, rich in Asian culture, and they can fly from anywhere via private jet easily. Mainland Chinese don’t have visa requirements in Phuket, so that makes life very easy for them, too. The big thing is how to make this location the charter epicentre of Asia, so that we make it easy for them. Create an itinerary that allows them to hop over for three days, stay in a hotel, residence or yacht, and discover more of the area.

BROKERAGE & CHARTER

What changes do you think need to happen with regards to regulations?

What plans do Burgess have for increasing exposure to individual Asian clients?

A big change that needs to happen is to do with charter. There is a still an antiquated charter regulation against foreign flags, which requires yachts to leave Thai waters at the end of the charter, and tends to push the charter length up to a week. Once the regulations get sorted out, they can look at changing the charter model. The government is keen to update it, but another part of the equation is tax related, which is the sticking point at present.

At present we’re working with like-minded brands – affiliate partnerships – and that also furthers the end-to-end luxury experience. It’s about sharing contacts and client leads to get exposure. We are working at spending time with the Asian senior officers of these brands to give them the opportunity to learn about us and to spread awareness about yachting – that is our main focus. In the grand scheme of things Burgess remains a small company. We have 200 employees globally, but in Asia only ten. We’re limited in what we can do, and with the size and diversity of the market it’s impossible to

Maritime laws prevent a foreign flag yacht to perform a commercial activity in Thailand – it’s the same in many countries, such as Greece, but the big obstacle at present is from a tax point of view, any yacht that carries commercial activity in Thailand needs to pay VAT on the yacht – that is what is being discussed now.

do it alone. So, we have decided to spend a lot of time with like-mind brands who can talk about new ideas with their clients. In Asia, social media is hugely advanced. It’s word of mouth – a contact on WeChat or WhatsApp or LinkedIn – these are huge inroads and tools of communication. The yacht needs to be the tool to reach what you’re passionate about, but it should be the experience itself that is at the forefront, rather than the vessel. Things will happen at their own pace. It may take some time, but it will happen.

i. www.burgessyachts.com

Talisman Maiton is a regular charter yacht in Thailand.

What about the role of infrastructure? There are only around five commercial yachts available for charter in Thailand at present, and that is 80% of the entire commercial fleet. So, the area can certainly accommodate more yachts than it currently has to. More marinas are not needed. That will happen naturally when the demand comes. More marinas will not bring more people. The bays are protected from a regulation point of view, and all the yachts prefer to be at anchor. More jetties would make life more comfortable, but that is a low cost investment. An end-to-end luxury experience is central to yacht charters, and shoreside businesses already offer worldclass hotels, restaurants, golf courses, private residences, all with plenty of diversity. The first Michelin star restaurant is on the horizon with the opening of a new ‘foraging’ restaurant, and the new Avadina Hills by Anantara development has already commenced work. Great boutiques, beach clubs, an unrivalled service industry – the full experience is already available, far more so than in the Caribbean.

Talisman Maiton was based in Yacht Haven Marina for the 2018/19 winter season

Phuket is already a super high-end destination, but the Western charter market has not developed yet. Thailand in the summer months is unpredictable due to monsoon season, and the optimum winter months coincide with ski season. The hope is to convert and capture charter guests who typically travel to the Caribbean. They won’t be US clients, as it’s too far away for most, but more likely Europeans, Australians and the ex-pat crowds in Hong Kong and Singapore.

For her moscow-born exterior designer Igor lobanov, she represents more than just award-winning penmanship; she symbolises the need to always have faith in your own vision. At 110m Jubilee remains the largest yacht to come out of the Netherlands, but with a yacht of this size, how do you create intimate areas that feel fluid and open-plan, but not too overwhelming? We did the thinking for the exterior design and the initial GA. In the end the interior was undertaken by another designer, but we contributed at the early stages of the project on the GA. But I can entirely answer your question referencing the exterior decks alone. The size of the exterior decks were planned exactly for different occasions and scenarios. We have an absolutely huge main deck, the covered area alone is 140sqm alone, and it is designed for

large parties and entertaining. compared to that, the bridge deck is far more modest, and then the owner’s deck is dedicated to just the owners and perhaps a few of their friends. The deck is designed to the size of the group.

What was the owner’s brief, when you first met? I never met the owner. There was a brief for the interior, but there was not a single comment on the exterior. We designed it without the client. The client had gone aboard our first new build yacht - the 85.6m oceanco y078 – and liked it, but said it was too small and he wanted to go for a bigger boat. I received a call from rupert nelson of Burgess who asked me to send over

my portfolio. We supplied three concepts, and the client picked one, and that is Jubilee. The exterior from that point has not been changed. small details, such as the funnel and mast have been adapted, but the proportion of the decks remains exactly the same. That has to be simplest design job ever! I don’t think so, because when I first designed the concept in 2010, no-one believed in this project. I exhibited it at monaco yacht show and nobody noticed. They simply looked at it, and couldn’t comprehend the number of decks. no-one got it, except for the client. I believed in it, I thought it was a cool concept, and in 2011 we found the client. But it took a year to negotiate the contract, which is why the project began in 2012.

What is your favourite feature on Jubilee? For me, it’s the double decks, and the huge main deck. When you’re travelling on a small tender it gives the scale of a bigger yacht, but as you get closer to Jubilee you realise its actual

Jubilee boasts a huge main deck, the covered area alone is 140m2.

size. That’s what we wanted to achieve, the feeling of a 160m contained in a modest 110m length. We wanted it to be a design trick.

Was it a challenge to realise the design? We spent a lot of hours on 3D modelling, and oceanco spent a lot of hours on engineering; just the number of surfaces alone was fifteen times bigger than our previous yacht, simply due to the layers and details, but we really enjoyed how complex this project was. I still think it’s the most complex superstructure ever done in the world. And of course, now that we’ve done it once, we can do it together. The success of Jubilee has continued your celebrated and high profile platform among the yachting fraternity since m/y A – are owners more willing to be daring with you? Well we had a bit of a splash with Jubilee in 2018, and we received multiple requests from both private clients and shipyards, and I think it’s good that we have a different approach for different types of clients.

Is bigger always better in yachting? Absolutely not. At present we have some very interesting projects that are medium-sized yachts, and they are hugely challenging production yachts. They produce different challenges, but we enjoy it all nonetheless. I think the most beautiful part of yachting is diversity. That way you don’t get bored repeating the same design, at least, that’s why I like it.

And those are projects you are currently working on? yes, we have a couple of mid-sized yachts. We are collaborating with crn shipyard on a 75m project. engineering has already started, and it doesn’t look like anything we’ve done before. It’s very different styling, and that was really important to us to demonstrate that we’re not limited to only one or two styles. our goal is to work professionally in multiple styles with varying design languages. We’re also working with other shipyards on smaller boats, and a couple of private clients on medium-sized yachts.

NAVAL ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

Al fresco dining under cover on the main deck of the yacht Jubilee.

On your website, you state that Lobanov Design is a studio for the future – what do you mean by that? It means that what we design ten years ago will in ten years’ time look like the future. And I’m not joking. look at concepts like star or Tuhura. The latter I designed in 2012, but I’m sure that in a couple of years’ time, people will look at it as something that is realistic, something that can be built. But we don’t only want to design radical concepts. I love designing yachts that have heritage, production yachts with classic lines, it’s good to have different approaches.

What is the Igor Lobanov signature, or do you adapt your designs to suit the client? It’s not that our clients guide us, usually we design something and the client picks it up from our portfolio. our first yacht, which happened to be an 85m, was designed in response to a competition run by oceanco. clients like to put their mark on a yacht, particularly in terms of the interior, but never in terms of exterior styling. It’s never happened.

Do you think owners come to you because you’re a bit of a rule breaker? I think so, because we don’t have any clients requesting traditional yachts. If that’s what they want, they will definitely opt for another designer, it doesn’t make sense to come to us.

s u p e r y a c h t - i n d u s t r y.c om

Igor Lobanov.indd 29

So, being a rule breaker is your niche in the industry? yes, I guess so, but the niche is getting wider. There will be more diversity in the coming years.

Your career began in aviation and automotive design, is there a deliberate crossover in terms of your design language? The sight profile of Jubilee is based on a car design, but the decks are purely inspired by modern architecture. A lot of influence comes from the likes of Zaha hadid and other architects. you can’t avoid the world around you when designing, you just see it and try to implement it.

And when you come to create a new concept, is it because you’ve seen something that triggers an idea, or is it because you need to create a new concept and search for inspiration? We often go just from an idea. At the moment, we’re working on a concept with very large windows, and we’re trying to imitate different heights. If you can imagine the Italian cities, the ground floor is usually much taller as this is given to shops, and then it gradually gets smaller the higher up you go. so, we’re trying to translate this into a yacht concept, but using just a visual imitation. It’s not a literal translation, we just play with lines.

The owner of Jubilee liked 85.6m Oceanco Y078 but found it too small

What do you want to achieve in yachting, what is your end goal? my dream is to design different yachts of really varying lengths, and to see more of my designs in the water. To bring more of my vision to life. There are so many different clients and yachts, but not all are nice looking, and there is still so much opportunity to make our mark. In terms of an end goal, the number of awards that we have achieved is enough, I don’t dream about awards anymore, I don’t think we need to prove anything, it’s just about enjoying building yachts for lots of different clients from a vast range of cultures. I like to have as much diversity as possible, and enjoy doing it every day.

FOCUS ON THE NETHERLANDS

ICON’s latest design – the ICON 280 – is a new construction project and a yacht built on spec.

houses a range of toys and tenders, and an infinity pool aft. However, with a vast VIP suite adjacent to the main saloon, the option to use the main deck as a self-contained VIP deck elevates the yacht to another level. The master suite overlooks the heli-deck on the upper deck, and is itself so huge that the owner can decide whether or not to opt for additional sea terraces. An elevator soars up five flights, linking the engine room deck to the bridge deck with its enormous exterior bathing area and wine storage. And the entire design is topped off with a palatial sun deck and jacuzzi, the ideal space for a full throttle celebration.

Concepts for the Future According to Jen Wartena, CEO of ICON, there are key differentiators that stand the Harlingenbased ICON shipyard apart from its competitors. Dutch quality, efficiency, and an open-minded approach are certainly characteristics that define the shipbuilder, but it’s the innovative nose for new and smart solutions that truly resonates. Founded on the success of yachts like Icon, Baton Rouge and Party Girl, ICON has continued to move forward, seeking expansion and pushing the boundaries of capabilities. With the yard operating at full capacity over the last couple of years, including

the exterior docks, the decision was made to expand the facilities, and in 2019 a new dock with a floating roof and the ability to be divided into two separate docks was realised. “It’s not a dry dock, but the yachts are out of the wind and rain”, says Wartena, “and at 20m wide, 29m high, and up to 130m in length, it gives us a lot more capacity.” Boasting a long-standing network of subcontractors, ICON focusses on two size ranges: 45m and 47m under 500GT. “Our focus is on this size range”, explains Wartena, “it’s our sweet spot, strengthened by our collaboration with Sunseeker.” Sunseeker had clients that want to build bigger, but their composite materials don’t allow for that and their facilities are not big enough – for us, we were actively looking for clients in that size bracket, so it was the coming together of two companies that could be each other’s solution. With a new 850GT concept in design stage, which will be ready for market at the end of 2019, there is a continued sense of momentum at ICON. The 280 project itself offers owner flexibility in its ability to have a customised interior. A classic cruising yacht finished to the highest level, it is capable of going anywhere, says Wartena: “The ICON 280 has a 6,000Nm range, it’s highly

fuel efficient, it’s clean in design, seaworthy and high up on the water. In short, it’s capable of cruising the oceans of the world in style.”

As a result, several superyachts launched in 2018 feature propeller and sterngear packages designed and manufactured using techniques that have barely changed in 50 years.

H

ere, Richard Broughton chats with Simon Lewis, head of CFD and propeller design for British propulsion specialist, CJR Propulsion, to discuss the importance of technology in developing highly-efficient propulsion packages, and how owners need to be more involved.

Many people won’t be familiar with how propeller and sterngear packages are designed and manufactured. Can you describe the process in brief? A lot of people, owners in particular, really don’t know enough, and that is fundamental to the issue we’re trying to raise. At its most simplistic

Leading the edge on propulsion system design and manufacture.

MTM Agency layout2.indd 34

level, there are two approaches to propulsion system design and manufacture. the old approach, which was developed in the 1950s, made use of hand-drawn graphs to create propeller series data. these series include the Wageningen and gawn propeller series, and were both tank tested to determine propeller thrust and torque, as well as a number of other data points. From that, the team responsible was able to draw the propeller curves to create a generic blade template for a range of prop sizes. Later, this information was adapted into a spreadsheet of propeller designs, detailing

different diameters, pitches and blade area ratios. it was revolutionary at the time, but things have moved on a lot. it may sound surprising, but that decades-old spreadsheet is still used by some propulsion specialists and, what’s more, they manufacture their propellers and stern gear in a similarly antiquated fashion – making everything by hand, and relying on a ‘good eye’ to ensure the prop is close enough to the vessel’s specification. this creates the opportunity for issues at each stage of the process, several of which will have a notable impact on the propulsion package’s performance, efficiency, and longevity. the 2019 approach is the antithesis of that. the design process begins with a CAD model of the vessel’s hull form provided by the yard. From that, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), you can visualise the flow around the entire propulsion system, and obtain the real nonuniform inflow into the propeller. the design can be iterated hundreds of times to find the optimal design and set-up for the whole package, including the rudder and stern gear, and considering all the vessel’s known appendages. the manufacturing methodology that we’re championing is equally as technology-driven. With this approach, the propeller and stern gear design are received directly from the CFD program and, once it’s authenticated, the bespoke propeller or bracket patterns are created from solid blocks of fine sand and resin using an autonomous computer-controlled robotic arm, which operates within minute tolerances. the process is incredibly fast and can cut the mould-making process from as much as two weeks to as little as a few hours, depending on the system’s size. With the mould completed, the required products are cast in the foundry, before moving

20-06-19 16:19

MarIne ProP ulsIon the products to the five-axis CnC machining centre, which is programmed to move along each propeller blade and carefully remove excess material to meet the precise dimensions established by the CFD 3D model. it is highly accurate and removes the need for hand grinding. once the propulsion package is manufactured and installed, the final stage is validation. it seems somewhat self-explanatory, but its integral to know how the propulsion system operates in real-world conditions, out on the water. in order to do that, a data acquisition tool is placed on board the vessel and captures a wide range of data sets. this typically includes speed, trim, roll, noise and vibration. if the project is a replacement prop or an existing production vessel, this process is especially revealing, quickly demonstrating the difference a fully optimised propulsion package is able to make, compared to taking a traditional approach.

British propulsion specialist, CJR Propulsion, develops highly-efficient propulsion packages using cutting-edge technology.

What are the tangible benefits for an owner? Fundamentally, the benefits are financial and performance-related. An optimised propulsion system – designed for the vessel in question – will be more efficient, delivering more power to the props, which means the engine load can be reduced for the same speed. this has the knock-on effect that fuel consumption can be cut by up to 15%, so on a large, fuel-hungry superyacht, there could be tens or even hundreds of thousands of euros in annual savings. the props will also last longer, as cavitation has been considered and mitigated at the design stage, extending the replacement cycle. other notable benefits include hugely reducing the potential for noise and vibration. the relatively small cost of performing the CFD and manufacturing using modern methods is very quickly repaid through reduced operating costs and extended longevity, so when you add the on-board benefits into the equation, it is pretty clear that this is the right route for the industry.

You mention that owners are not involved enough, how can they ensure they get the system they deserve? there are a number of simple questions that owners should ask that will ensure that they get the right solution, or at least provide the information they need to make an informed choice. the first question is how the propulsion package is going to be designed. owners need to know if their propulsion partner is using CFD to design a fully optimised propulsion system, or if they are using a spreadsheet based on the aforementioned propeller series data. this includes whether they are using the vessel’s real

s u p e r y a c h t - i n d u s t r y.c om

MTM Agency layout2.indd 35

Class 1 or Class 2, they are not following that methodology and owners need to be aware that

Achieving the levels of performance, efficiency and longevity that you’d expect for a superyacht relies on a fully-optimised propulsion package design. hull form and have considered the hull’s known appendages. Achieving the levels of performance, efficiency and longevity that you’d expect for a superyacht relies on a fully-optimised propulsion package design, so if you get the first stage wrong, it’s an uphill battle from the start.

Next, when it comes to manufacture, is the propulsion package built by hand, or fully CNC machined? it’s important that owners understand what they are getting. Are they buying a package, manufactured using the latest technology and certified to iSo Class S, or a hand-made package which can only provide the lower Class 1 or Class 2 certification? Class S is a totally reasonable expectation for every superyacht but is only possible using the modern approach. if the supplier is offering

they could be getting a lower quality product, with potentially significant implications. Also look out for what cavitation, noise and vibration predictive analysis has been performed, and how the performance has been validated. A trusted propulsion specialist will be able to offer validation of the propulsion package they are offering, using an on-board data acquisition tool. there needs to be a bit of flex with performance as the weight of the vessel and a number of other factors are relevant, but if the finished yacht reflects the design specification, it should meet or exceed performance expectations.

Finally, something that is especially important for superyachts available for charter, is what is the timeline for prop replacement? it’s something not often thought about but when in the middle of the summer season, the last thing you want is to damage a prop and be told it’s an eight or ten week wait for a replacement. one of the additional benefits of the modern approach to design and manufacture is the reduced time and man hours required to get a replacement prop out the door. At CJR, we’re aiming for a two-week turnaround. We’re not quite at that level yet but within a few months we’re confident that is a realistic goal. the difference between approaches could equate to several million euros in charter revenue, so it’s another factor for owners to consider.

The owner’s deck has its own exclusive dining and seating areas, while a large heated pool is located on the main deck. But much of the design prioritises leisure and watersports, with a 1,500l refuelling station for all the toys on board, not to mention five cranes and two special hydraulic scissor-type lifts for lifting tenders of up to 15t. as impressive as the vessel is, vitelli’s focus is on the future of the yard and its ability to continue to build some of the largest yachts in the world. “There are only eighteen 100m+ yachts in the world, with four per year, on average, being delivered”, he said. “We had to decide during the peak of the financial crisis whether or not to invest eur 25 million in a new shed. it was a testing time, but we decided to do so, and now that we have entered the field, we want to continue.” Benetti has stated its desire and intention to control 25% of the gigayacht market, and according to vitelli, that means one giga per year.

Growth from Within The Benetti group increased by 18% last year, with a reported eur 850 million in sales in 2018. azimut is doing “very well” too, according to vitelli, who regards Benetti to be the “best boat yard in the world”. entry in to the 100m+ market presents “new investment opportunities” he said, and will “drive this part of the group forward”, supported by a very healthy order book and innovation.

vowed it would not be Benetti’s last gigayacht. he stated that with the yard’s new “technical know-how” and “in-house workforce” required for building larger vessels, Benetti will strive to deliver at least one 100m+ yacht a year.

NEW BUILD Benetti has stated its desire and intention to control 25% of the gigayacht market, and according to Vitelli, that means one giga per year.

“Working with a lot of focus and detail in this artisanal way has been really rewarding”, he says. “We carefully select all our suppliers, and craftsmanship is in our hearts. after having hired this skilled workforce for the design and build of three gigayachts, we are keeping an in-house culture of skilled suppliers who will belong to our future teams whenever we embark on new adventures.” speaking of the gigayacht launches, fusignani cited that more than five million working hours had gone into the three builds. more than 1,000km of wire, and a combined total of 12,000gT. “The secret has been to have three dedicated teams, each one focussing on a gigayacht build”, he explained. “so, we had dedicated teams, 40-50 people for each yacht – working within purchasing, design, manufacturing, etc. We worked closely with our suppliers, and addressed any challenges collaboratively.” fusignani also referenced the “stringent planning” that was required for each activity on a daily basis throughout the various stages, stating that, “this was the secret to the success.”

Innovation on a Grand Scale pt: powered by two mTu 2,880kW diesel engines and achieving a top speed of 18.5 knots, the fB275 is also equipped with an electric schottel stern spJ pump jet with 500kW power providing outstanding manoeuvrability. it enables the yacht to travel for short distances under entirely electric propulsion. praised for its complex engineering, for British design studio rWd, the vessel represents the largest exterior design project that the team have worked on to date. having first drawn the profile ten years ago, the yacht has now been launched almost exactly as it was drawn as the first concept. “fB275 has been in build at Benetti for four years, but the project began for rWd more than ten years ago with the client”, says adrian chisnell, Team principal at rWd. “We have a mantra in the studio, we like to think of all yachts as having a silhouette and a pure form. We pride ourselves on creating elongated forms, and tricking the eye, making them feel elegant and timeless. an elegant yacht will never look out of date, and fB275 is the perfect example.” chisnell also touched upon the amount of change that the superyacht industry has seen in

the last ten years, with owners becoming younger and their expectations changing. “yachts become more complex, and it becomes a real task to sit down and develop things”, he said. There is little doubt though that with the successful delivery of three 100m+ yachts, the innovations for Benetti will keep on coming, as will the rWd collaborations. “The fB275 typifies everything that we strive to achieve”, adds chisnell. “it’s easy for us to draw a line, but what’s difficult is to turn that line into something that is a stunning, operational vessel on a scale of this magnitude. it’s certainly one, if not the finest achievement in rWd’s 25-year history.”

project bravo, now christened bravo eugenia, is a new kind of oceanco. featuring a beam measuring 16.3m and capable of achieving a top speed of 17.5kn, at first glance she may simply appear to be the Dutch yard’s latest elegant custom delivery. however, 109m bravo eugenia represents a new direction for oceanco – the life Design – which takes its acronym from the words lengthened, innovative, fuel efficient and eco-friendly.

Bravo Eugenia has a single tiered engine room that allows for an optimised long and slender hull shape.

bravo eugenia has a single tiered engine room that allows for an optimised long and slender hull shape, resulting in a reduction in overall propulsion power demand. furthermore, the hull form affords enhanced space for guest accommodations. with naval architecture and engineering by lateral naval architects, exterior design by nuvolari lenard and interior by reymond langton Design, bravo eugenia is a force of design ingenuity, which takes its lead from the life concept.

LIFE the life design centres around naval architecture which “creates a harmonious balance between weight, power, technical areas and luxury interior”. this theory was proven during an intensive period of winter sea trials in the north sea, where the vessel both met and exceeded performance expectations and predictions, says James roy, managing Director of lateral naval architects. “the excellent sea keeping and performance demonstrated during bravo’s sea trials confirmed that the life Design qualities are indeed embedded in bravo’s Dna”, he said. “coupled with her hybrid propulsion system, bravo delivers exceptional performance and is configured to offer multiple operational modes, each matched to the variable operating profile of a yacht designed to adventure autonomously across the world’s oceans.”

What are your main areas of speciality? we have two main lines of products. the first is our underwater intervention on ships that eliminates the need for them to go into dry dock. And the second is a range of surface coatings that we supply that will keep the hull of a ship protected for the lifetime of the vessel and is especially relevant to the superyacht industry.

Explain to me how the method works well for superyachts? we can keep superyachts in the water for ten years without even the slightest thought of dry docking, and there are a number of advantages to that. eliminating the need to dry dock significantly reduces the amount of time and costs that yachts invest in that. when in dry dock for painting or maintenance, the yacht has to travel to the dry dock destination, and that can often be a considerable distance, especially if the yacht has been on charter. And of course, the cost of dry docking is pretty significant. so, imagine the yacht can stay where it is, the hull is pristine, and there is no need to paint again for at least ten years. that’s a game changer, because if you don’t need to go in for a paint job, and all inspections and maintenance work can be done under water – including technical maintenance, such as maintaining propellers, stern shafts, bow thrusters, etc – then the main change is the coating. if you have a coating that is designed for it, you can keep the hull in the best speed condition. the coating is ecospeed, produced by subsea industries, which is Hydrex’s sister company. there is a 30m yacht in rotterdam that had ecospeed applied to its hull ten years ago, and since then has been successfully maintained without the need for a recoat.

Tell me about the flexible mobdock repair method that Hydrex developed, and how this can assist superyacht captains? this is an idea that we introduced to the maritime market that involves creating a dry environment on a ship, without taking it to dry

dock. so, for maintenance work, such as stern tube seal replacements, working on a propeller, or replacing a bow thruster, all of these types of jobs need to be done in the dry. what we do is create a localised dry environment around the object, without taking the ship out of the water. that is what we call a flexible mobdock. we create an air pressure bubble that is the same as the water pressure, and it makes for a dry environment. we use flexible mobdock repair on multiple ships, large and small, even navy ships, and now we’re receiving a lot more interest from superyachts too, due to the time and cost savings that it presents.

How does it compare to drydocking? the main difference is the amount of time that we can save, not only because the yacht has no need to travel anywhere, but we can work on a yacht in a day and a half. simply getting into and out of dry dock is a day and a half without even taking the work into consideration, so it’s hugely economical.

Aside from eliminating dry dock, what are the main advantages for superyacht captains and owners? it increases the flexibility for the yacht tremendously, not just in location but timeline too. the work can be carried out when is most convenient for the yacht. in addition, the crew can maintain the hull using dive equipment, so there is an onboard facility to wash down the yacht, which only takes a couple of hours – even an 80m yacht can be cleaned in six hours. but what that means is that if a yacht has received ecospeed coating, and is cleaned every six weeks, then the yacht can be kept in the most pristine condition without the use of antifouling, toxic materials or emissions leaking into the sea. if the hull and waterline are impeccable, the yacht will operate at its most efficient in terms of speed and fuel. in addition, the cost of travelling to dry dock just once will pay for around five years of cleaning.

i. hydrex.be

What are the main challenges faced with underwater repair? there is no challenge. the yacht can stay where it is at anchor, and superyachts actually facilitate our work because usually they’re in very good condition and are located in areas where visibility is great and there is minimal traffic. more often than not there are also no other working operations going on, so together it makes for an ideal working environment. in essence, we make yachts completely independent of dry docks. it opens up the opportunity for yachts to undertake specialist refits on a quayside, even, eliminating the need to head to a shipyard. the yacht can be anywhere in the world, and our team will head out to them. we work in every single country in the world, from the Arctic to Antarctica, and vietnam to chile to canada. Anywhere that is required. Boud Van Rompay, founder and CEO of Hydrex.

t’s not often that a new build superyacht is delivered from the shores of china, and even less so when it’s the largest yacht ever to be built in Asia, but the hat-trick comes when it scoops a design award during its world debut event. delivered in 2018 by Pride mega yachts, Illusion Plus was designed by british studio rainsford saunders design (now known as rainsford mann design), with renowned dutch naval architecture by Azure, and interior styled by sinot exclusive yacht design. rising six decks high, Illusion Plus is an extraordinary 3,642gt vessel. cruising at 15kn and reaching a top speed of 17kn, she accommodates up to twelve guests in eight cabins, but it hasn’t always been plain sailing. the project dates back to 2007 and was put on hold when the global financial crisis hit. the yantai-based shipyard went by the name of cImc raffles yacht when construction began in 2010. rebranding occurred a few years later, to better reflect the emphasis on large pleasure vessels.

Built to Impress long and sleek, Illusion Plus cuts a distinctive silhouette on the water. her exterior lines are inspired by rolls-royce motor cars, with a vertical bow and gently sloping transom. built from a steel hull she has an aluminium

superstructure to Abs standards. rather aptly, and befitting of her time, Illusion Plus features two 3,000hp rolls royce diesel-electric propulsion engines designed to be ultra-efficient and quiet without sacrificing speed. for added comfort and safety, she has also been fitted with rolls royce zero speed retractable fin stabilisers. Illusion Plus benefits from two 1,700kw Azipull thruster pods for more efficient operations and manoeuvring, and has a true dynamic-positioning system, which means the vessel can stay in place in sensitive regions, for example, without using her anchor.

Award-Winning Interior by far the most exciting Pride mega yachts project to date, Illusion Plus hugely benefits from the yard’s collaboration with world-class consultants and designers. A combination between performance and comfort, she offers long range world cruising (with an impressive cruising range of 5,000nm). uniting pure luxury with a sense of adventure, she features a dedicated spa, beauty salon, gymnasium, two jacuzzi pools (one with a waterfall feature) and a touch-and-go helipad. designed to enhance onboard experiences, Illusion Plus displays innovative design and yacht construction expertise, but it is her contemporary

Free-Flowing Design Thanks To a new wave of composiTe maTerials and innovaTive manufacTuring, venTilaTion grills need no longer be regarded as a necessary eyesore. flowgrill director arnold woerts explains how the company is combining functionality with design one grill at a time. all photos courTesy of flowgrill

What advances have you recently made using composite materials? we now have the ability to make a copy of our main aluminium ventilation grills in composite materials. functionality wise, this has become an increasingly important aspect, as yacht owners want the assurance and insurance that grills work well. we want to provide our products in both materials. in order to accurately make capacity calculations during the engineering stage, we advise yacht builders and naval architects on air flow, particularly when linked to air speed, pressure loss and noise. This is because various different designs of lamellas can give very different results for flow, so it’s important to make sure it’s correct for each individual type.

What are the biggest challenges of manufacturing products made from composite materials? as with our aluminium versions, our composite products are all fully tested, and this is vital to the success of the product. some specific tests are ultra violet tests or aging tests, which involves investigating whether shape changes occur during temperature fluctuations, for example, when a yacht travels from the caribbean to scandinavia, and therefore moving through environments with high temperature fluctuations. we also carry out adhesion tests, making sure the paint adheres to the product correctly. Thanks to our many years of experience with aluminium products, a large part of the specific features have already been investigated in our previous years of development, but the biggest

24-06-19 09:58

FOCUS ON THE NETHERLANDS challenge was to be able to make a copy of our aluminium version so that we can offer composite as well. The whole testing process has taken around two years, and we have now entered the final stages.

What are the main benefits that the new product range brings? in addition to the product range being a modular system, which makes it flexible in use, durable and with short delivery times, another advantage is that the profiles are made in stock, therefore all parts for assembly are ordered and are in stock as well. all the parts are built using a similar principle to lego bricks, in that they can easily expand and build according to customer requirements. we have invested a lot in special tools to be able to realise this ultimate product.

Are the new products in response to consumer demand or something that you saw was needed on the market? a combination of both. sustainable products and short delivery times represent important aspects that are at the forefront of the industry. when combined with an increase in demand from the refit market, i think this new product provides a great solution.

What feedback have you received so far regarding the new product range? our first feedback was based on our presentation, research and experiences that have been further developed from our wellknown aluminium versions to composite. i’m

working on the feasibility of more designs. aesthetically speaking, exterior designers often regard products such as ours as an ugly but necessary part of a yacht. however, with our knowledge, expertise, and flexibility in production, flowgrill ventilation grills combine functionality with design, with beautiful results.

i. www.flowgrill.com

happy to say that the range has been received well, and our first orders are currently in production.

What other new products are you currently working on? at flowgrill we have an in-house department that is constantly working on new developments. in general, around 15-20% of our engineering capacity goes in to r&d, but we are currently focusing on additional options linked to our ventilation grills. a ventilation grill is no longer a simple standard product but is a complicated element with many extra options. Take for example hinged grills, which require various types of filters, as well as manual and electrical operated shutters to close the openings off from bad weather. some of our new developments in recent years include the design of ventilation grills that are combined with glass stripes, and we are constantly Grill installed in ceiling including lighting.

n 14 may 2019, Dutch shipyard heesen yachts celebrated the successful keel laying of its largest yacht to date – 80.07m Project cosmos. with a cruising speed of 20 knots and an impressive top speed of almost 30 knots, she promises to be a sleek and powerful superyacht, fitted with Van oossanen’s signature fast Displacement hull form for increased efficiency and comfort when cruising. exterior designed by winch Design, cosmos is a natural progression following on from Project Avanti. the fastest, most technologically advanced project yet, she features extensive use of glass, clean lines and a sporty silhouette to create a timeless, dynamic profile. the fourth collaboration between heesen and the awardwinning Dutch studio sinot yacht Architecture &

Design, her interior provides clear graphic lines in a clean architectural environment. “our brief came directly from the owner’s representative”, says Paul costerus of sinot Design. “we have worked with the owner’s representative for many years, so we have a good understanding of his needs and personal preferences. this helped us to reach the mark within the short timeframe available to develop the interior design.”

Interior Design working to a brief that requested a ‘light interior design’ with ‘colour accents’, and for ceiling heights to be ‘as optimised as possible’, sinot responded with a delicate nod to nature. natural mathematics, such as the fibonacci sequence,

form the basis for the interior architecture. the theatrical staircase is reminiscent of a snail shell in its design. “shells always develop according to the fibonacci sequence, and this inspired the creation of the stairs which possess a shell-like structure”, costerus explains. shell-like shapes also occur in the glass panels in the main lounge within the light features, as well as in the patterns woven in the carpets. “Proportions within the architecture are all very well balanced, and based on golden ratio rules”, he adds. cosmos boasts a functional and lifestyle enhancing layout. Key interior design features include the stunning spiral staircase with stainless-steel detailing that wraps around the full glass elevator, as well as the spacious foyer

on the main deck which will form a highly desirable entrance to the boat. in addition, the mid deck forward owner’s area stands apart for its level of detailing and crisp cream lines.

Exterior Features while the overall interior design language incorporates light soft tones, one of the most important materials used on board is glass. special carved glass panels artfully give shape to the dominant in-built light features in the ceiling of the main deck lounge. in the beach club, too, the bottom of the pool is encapsulated in carved glass with the natural break-lines used as decorative elements, while at the aft end of the pool a sheet of glass leads to a waterfall where water dramatically cascades to the deck below.

these details are offset with the use of backlit onyx, crystal glass panels, straw marquetry, hard wood flooring, silk carpets, natural leather wall panelling and stainless-steel. when it comes to the exterior, however, notable features include a fully-rated helipad which is capable of hosting a eurocopter ec135, which can impressively be converted into an open-air cinema. cosmos will also feature a fully-custom limousine tender, also penned by winch Design, which pays tribute to the winch vision – to retain heesen’s sporty DnA, but blended with an innovative, futuristic spin. in keeping with the interior, curved glass forms smooth, sculpted shapes, creating a feeling of slick, contemporary charm. mark cavendish, Director of sales and marketing at heesen, described cosmos’ beach club as its “piece de resistance”: “Drop-down platforms to the stern and side create a truly enormous space, and there is a stunning sunken bar below the onyx and glass clad bottom of the aft deck swimming pool.”

Unique Features Accommodating twelve guests in four wellappointed suites on the lower deck, a ViP with adjacent private studio on the bridge deck, and the striking master stateroom on the main deck forward, nineteen crew in eleven cabins will be able to discretely service the guests, while the

sun deck with an incredibly high ceiling is one of the eye-catching features of the yacht. for costerus, in addition to the staircase, the standout area that showcases sinot’s interior is the impressive owner’s suite. “the owner’s suite is a nice balance of luxury with soft shapes that creates an open and appealing ambience. the level of detail is very high.” of course for the shipyard, it’s the feat of engineering that has gone into making an 80m aluminium build look relatively “easy”. speaking at the keel laying event, Arthur brouwer, heesen’s ceo, commented: “to deliver the approximate 30-knot speed while creating the

required strength in this 80m aluminium yacht, we had to think long and hard about how to bring the necessary stiffness to the design without adding too much more weight. After all, she needs to be kept light to be fast, but we also don’t want her to bend from one end to the other, which wouldn’t look so good! the solution is our unique design, which we have called the ‘backbone’ – and which we have now patented.”

NEW BUILD Celebrated for her technological and engineering features, including custom glass and solar panels, Artifact edges closer still to her long-awaited completion date.

Artefact by Name, Artefact by Nature NOW FULLY IMMERSED IN THE INTERIOR OUTFITTING STAGE, GERMAN SHIPYARD NOBISKRUG’S eco-minded 80m yacht Artefact remains on course for her highly anticipated 2019 delivery.

F

ollowing an 18-month period in Nobiskrug’s state-of-the-art climate-controlled superyacht hall in Rendsburg, Artefact’s arresting interior has at last begun to take shape. Celebrated for her technological and engineering features, including custom glass and solar panels, she edges closer still to her long-awaited completion date. With little widely known about the hugely anticipated build, both the distinctive interior and exterior design of Artefact reflect the discerning owner’s persistence to achieve a list of special criteria that included environmental responsibility, technological innovation and guest comfort. The quest for silent operation and maximum stability has been a driving force behind the concept for this vessel, and many traditional

s u p e r y a c h t - i n d u s t r y.c om

Nobiskrug.indd 57

aspects of superyacht GAs have been challenged. For example, in a major departure from convention, the master stateroom is situated in the aft rather than the bow with all guest entertainment areas situated in lowacceleration zones.

Defined by Design Key to the state-of-the-art yacht’s design are the number of new technological and engineering features to minimise its environmental impact. For example, she will include stabilisers and bow thrusters for manoeuvrability and comfort at sea, a movable bathing platform for easy access to the water, and the fitting of sun awnings, teak decking and fixed furniture. Extensive hull development and testing have ensured that the vessel will be both comfortable for guests when cruising, as well as having great seakeeping capabilities. The luxurious Reymond Langton-designed interior is also beginning to take shape. Defined by a fluid layout with plenty of natural sunlight, it also reflects the lifestyle and personal preferences of the owner and their family. The levelled flooring and decorative walls are now installed, and specially commissioned artwork adorns the walls. Bespoke flooring runs

throughout, and elaborate decorative walls are just some of the stand out features.

An Anticipated Unveiling With time ticking down to the Monaco Yacht Show in September, all mechanical and electrical systems on board Artefact are now fitted, and both the interior and exterior doors and hatches are mounted. The commissioning and Harbour Acceptance Tests have also been completed. Fully immersed in the interior outfitting stage, Artefact remains on course for her 2019 delivery, and is set to attend the annual event of the year, the Monaco Yacht Show. Nobiskrug has always been recognised for producing less conventional designs, but Artefact will provide the yard with the perfect opportunity to showcase its ability to produce fully custom, cutting-edge designs, and to inspire owners with an aesthetic that pushes the boundaries in every way.
