MYS 2019 Heesen Yachts’ latest launch, Project Boreas is a 50m fullaluminium motor yacht just below the 500GT threshold. Begun on speculation and based on the design and engineering platform of Nova Plus, she offers fast yet very efficient performance thanks to a Fast Displacement Hull Form, which has a draught of just 2.15m. Frank Laupman of Omega Architects is responsible for the contemporary exterior design, while Mark Whiteley worked closely with the experienced owner to create an elegant yet warm interior design. In addition, both the hull and superstructure sport a custom metallic Mountain Grey paint job by Awlgrip, which elegantly matches with the colour of the owner’s car.

Broadwater returns to Huisfit for major conversion Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman’s refit division Huisfit has announced the commission for the extensive conversion of Feadship motor yacht Broadwater. The scope of work will include changes relating to classification requirements, as well as a 4m extension of the hull (including a re-styled stern), a rebuild of the sundeck including a new composite mast with sun awning, and painting of the superstructure and hull. The contract comes after the Huisfit team recently assisted Broadwater’s owner’s team regarding general services and her Lloyd’s inspection during the spring of 2019.

At the 2019 Monaco Yacht Show, Lift Emotion BV are proud to have elevators on at least two of the most spoken about yachts at the show, both built in the North of Germany. This year the company also has further information about service on board and how it can integrate an internet tool, as well as how it can service elevators of any make and/or upgrade these with better drive/control systems. Furthermore, the Lift Emotion team will be available to advise on new builds, special designs for elevators, and options for bespoke elevators for residential projects. In 2019 alone, Lift Emotion has delivered elevators on board yachts built by Benetti, Oceanco, Feadship, Lürssen, Nobiskrug and Delta Marine. As a follow up, the team will also be available at Metstrade in Amsterdam in November.

For over 25 years, Palladium Technologies has been a leader of innovative hardware and software technologies, providing fully integrated solutions that encompass all aspects of the megayacht. urquoise Yachts, first established in the 1970s under the Proteksan and Turquoise brands, is renowned for its impressive range of 40-70m superyachts delivered to an international roster of clients from the USA, UK, Europe and Russia. Always striving to expand upon its launches, the yard continues to upgrade its facilities and processes at its two shipyards, continuously managing to have several superyachts under construction at one time. In addition to its offices in Monaco and Fort Lauderdale, it provides its clients with full technical assistance and support from its Istanbul headquarters.

Design Innovation Turquoise has always prided itself on successful design collaborations to deliver fully custom yachts that stand apart from the crowd. Since its first launch, 50m Turquoise, which sported design and naval architecture from the great Ed Dubois, Turquoise has partnered with a vast range of studios to provide fresh inventive designs. These include H2 Yacht Design, Vitruvius Yachts, Vallicelli Design, Ken Frievokh Design, Nuvolari Lenard, Jean-Guy Verges, Winch Design, Donald Starkey and Michela Reverberi to name but a few. Working alongside its talented in-house team, it provides its clients with a turnkey solution. From stern design to bulwarks to the overall length of the hull, each and every detail is customised. Wholly supportive of its close collaborative relationships with its clients, Turquoise nurtures its in-house creativity by way of innovation, investing in the very latest technology and software packages in order to achieve the pinnacle of efficiency. Its overriding philosophy, however, is a no compromise approach to engineering and build standards, which cannot be rushed. It takes thousands of hours to build a Turquoise yacht.

No-Shortcut Philosophy Aided by 3D planning tools, Turquoise confirms the most effective routes for connecting all the vital components through cabling runs, piping and for hydraulic systems. Its engineers design the most fuel-efficient installation. Unique sprung engine mounts and elastic shaft couplings are incorporated in order to minimise vibration, then multi-layered insulation materials are added.

FOCUS ON TURKEY At today’s lower engine speeds, it is almost impossible to hear or feel the running components. “The result of our ‘no-shortcut’ philosophy is a high precision engineering product, encompassing the utmost in efficiency, virtually silent in operation and offering outstanding levels of comfort for our customer”, says a Turquoise spokesperson. “Along with a wealth of in-house talent from highly qualified engineers and project managers to ensure our yachts perform at their utmost, we also entrust the final production stages to craftsmen, who bring with them generations of knowledge.”

Amidships is a spacious 12m garage that harbours a 9.6m Pascoe Limousine tender and an 8.6m day tender.

Making optimum use of its on-site paint facilities, the yard invests in both time and labour for its fairing and top coat application, applying the thickest finish layer of paint as permitted by manufacturers’ specifications. This not only delivers the most aesthetically pleasing result but guarantees the finish will stand the test of time against harsh environmental factors and maintain its beauty for years.

Latest Launch With its headquarters in Istanbul, the gateway to the eastern Mediterranean, Turquoise Yachts has two shipyards, one in Istanbul at Pendik and the other in Kocaeli. The Pendik shipyard is just a few minutes’ drive from the international Sabiha Gokcen airport, connected directly to the majority of the world’s capitals by commercial and private aviation. This facility has direct access to the Sea of Marmara for initial sea trials, conveniently just minutes from the yard’s dock face and just a short sea passage into the heart of the Mediterranean. Turquoise’s most recent launch and flagship vessel, 77m GO, made full use of these conveniences when delivered in 2018. Designed by London-based H2 Design, and sporting a highly distinctive turquoise paint scheme, GO is recognised as a leading-edge new generation yacht. Its five spacious decks are serviced by a central elevator that operates from a 162m2 beach club to the open sundeck. Flanked by two shell doors and a transom door, the beach club encompasses a lounge, bar, massage room and dive store.

Artisanal Style Finished throughout with detailed craftsmanship, the main deck hosts the saloon and dining area with extensive seating on the aft deck. Guests are accommodated in two VIP staterooms, three large doubles and two twin cabins, each with a generous marble-clad bathroom. In the central stair lobby an extraordinary ‘Sea Spray’

Amidships is a spacious 12m garage that harbours a 9.6m Pascoe Limousine tender and an 8.6m day tender. The foredeck on the owner’s deck incorporates a touch-and-go helicopter pad and private jacuzzi. Moving aft, the owner’s accommodation includes a large forward-facing suite with panoramic views, his-and-hers bathrooms, and dual dressing rooms. The generous owner’s lounge leads out over zero threshold doors to the aft deck where a large back lit onyx table for fourteen and a bar with integrated teppanyaki grill are in place for alfresco dining. Overhead integrated infrared panels keep any night chills at bay, while the yacht’s dynamic positioning system protects the sea bed.

First-Class Facilities To transport yachts between its two yards, Turquoise has a purpose built 66m floating dock capable of lifting and transporting vessels of up to 2,500t. The dock can also accommodate

lifting keels and allows the centre boards of large sailboats to be deployed freely while they are dry docked. Completed in 2007, the Pendik facility is an impressive 25,000m2 landscaped location capable of accommodating four yachts of up to 85m in length simultaneously. It boasts a dock length of 110m and is used expressly for interior decoration and finishing work. With the skill base on hand at Pendik, Turquoise is a yard ideally suited for refit work or planned maintenance for vessels up to 120m. The second shipyard with a 120m dock was established in 2005 and is located in Kocaeli, just across the bay from Pendik. Its main function is the completion of steel and aluminium hulls and superstructure work, as well as the installation of machinery and heavy piping. Currently building 50m to 80m+ hulls (of both aluminium and steel construction) the yard has the capability and facilities to build yachts with an overall length of up to 120m.

ounded in 1994 by passionate and visionary yachtsman luca bassani, Wally is a world leader in yachting innovation, combining the latest technology with contemporary design. it is also the only yachting brand to be a two-time winner of the Adi Compasso d’oro. in 2019, following a period of strategic partnership, Wally became part of the ferretti group and the brand continues to go from strength to strength. A clear example of the yacht builder’s strong market position is the confirmation of three new orders of its 48 Wallytender before the first units, which were sold in europe and usA, had even touched water. Currently in build at the ferretti group production site in forlì, the third and fourth units will make their international debut at the 2019 Cannes Yachting festival. one has a gunmetal grey paint finish and will be exhibited in the water; the other, with custom sahara sand livery, will be on land.

“these sales confirm the vision of ferretti group in acquiring one of the world’s most renowned and innovative yacht brands”, says stefano de vivo, CCo of ferretti group and managing director of Wally. “in terms of research and development, engineering and production, ferretti group is in a position to develop Wally’s unique potential even further.”

Luxury as Standard Ahead of its time, the Wallytender is recognised for having opened a new market as a ‘standalone runabout’. Perfectly suited to both day trips and longer cruising, the compact vessel offers more than simply a stylish tender for larger yachts, supported by a raft of new features that enhance its standalone appeal. generous interior volumes with an elegant suite combine the sailing heritage of teak decking with panels and fittings in Wally’s signature carbon fibre.

A Force to be Reckoned With HEADING TO ANTARCTICA IS NEVER A SIMPLE TASK. EVEN ON BOARD AN EXPEDITION VESSEL THE RISKS ARE PLENTY. BUT WHEN CRUISING ON AN “UNPROVEN” 29M EXPLORER – THE SMALLEST PRIVATE MARSHALL ISLAND FLAG BOAT TO EVER venture to the Southern Peninsula – you need to be sure of two things, a) that you have an open mind, and b) that the vessel is designed by Vripack.

Vripack helped with the weight/balance, which resulted in around 25,000 pounds being taken off the bow of the boat.

hoever came up with the old adage that ‘size matters’ was clearly unfamiliar with Vripack’s legendary Doggersbank Offshore series of yachts, or more specifically, with 29m explorer Gayle Force (ex-Patriot). Despite being built in 2003, compact 29m explorer Gayle Force (ex-Patriot) had failed for many years to venture far from her home on the west coast of North America. But forming part of Vripack’s legendary Doggersbank Offshore series of yachts, all that changed at the end of last year when her owners – Wayne and Gayle Laufer – embarked on a year-long voyage under the stewardship of Captain Scott Whittaker, and Gayle Force became the smallest private Marshall Island flag boat to ever venture to the Southern Peninsula.

Valparaíso, Chile. The 14-day maiden voyage remains the longest single journey they have undertaken so far, confirming the yacht’s solid 5,500Nm range running twin screw. “It was one of those things that I wanted to do for the boat, and for our ownership, and for the crew”, explains Captain Scott. “I wanted to know what the boat can do.”

Exploring the Limits

essence. The plan developed by weather; the Weddell Sea proved to be too “iced up”, so the route took them through the Brown Bluff, Deception Island, Penguin Island and Port Lockroy.

First built in the Netherlands in 2003 by Bloemsma & Van Breemen, Gayle Force forms part of Vripack’s legendary Doggersbank Offshore series. Known for its heavy-duty use, low emissions, clean engine rooms and longlasting equipment, the Doggersbank epitomises Vripack’s design philosophy; to create safe, durable yachts with light, elegant and comfortable interiors that make you feel at home, at sea. For Captain Scott, however, the real adventure began long before the voyage itself, with a long 20 months spent in the shipyard “decomplicating” the numerous changes that had accrued over time. “One of the biggest things that Vripack helped us with was weight/ balance. We ended up taking around 25,000 pounds off the bow of the boat and replacing the unnecessarily large 23mm anchor chain with the original 16mm version”, he says. “We also converted the crew lounge into a third guest cabin, and importantly added zero speed stabilisers. I really feel that with an expedition boat, the only defence you have is to slow down. It’s not a long enough boat to stick your nose into it, but to slow to 3-4 knots, stay upright and keep running – Gayle Force does that really well now.”

With only two days in Valparaíso they moved on to Puerto Montt in Chile and cruised the “inside” of Patagonia where they experienced “relentless winds and high seas, and the boat took a phenomenal beating, as did the crew”. Punta Arenas became the base for stepping off and returning from Antarctica, where they were permitted to arrive on 18 January, but required to leave by 2 February. Time was of the

Captain Scott elected to bunk down on the bridge for the Antarctic leg in a bivy sack and sleeping bag.

Facing Adversity Captain Scott tolerated his fair share of adversity, too, having elected to bunk down on the bridge for the Antarctic leg in a bivy sack and sleeping bag to accommodate the ice pilot and naturalist. “It’s a difficult place to cruise”, says Captain Scott. “It isn’t difficult in nature,

it’s difficult in its vastness. It’s so big that it’s one of the few places I really wished we had a helicopter, as that would have enabled us to access so much, so quickly.” What they lacked in terms of toys, however, was made up for by their ability to tuck into small nooks and crannies, something which came in handy along the Patagonian coastline. When not wrestling with challenging sea conditions, considerable distances, and difficulty with provisioning in the area, Wayne, a keen fly fisherman, and his guests indulged in some of the best trout fishing the oceans have to offer.

Design Vision The Laufers typify the ambitious and visionary clients that Vripack’s creative, holistic and collaborative approach attracts, and so despite being in their 60s, the rough conditions only added to excitement. “Wayne is an old adventurer, and it wasn’t that cold”, says Captain Scott. “The coldest we saw was around -26°C, although with wind it was probably chillier. I think we saw colder in Patagonia!”

Vripack.indd 27

Wildlife abounded, with humpback, fin and blue whales aplenty. Penguins were in their thousands, and every type of seal was sighted. The highlight for Captain Scott, however, were the two nights spent drifting with the ice in the Gerlache Straits. “We had amazing evenings there, it was truly beautiful. It felt like something out of Space Odyssey, semi-light out, just watching the ice, silently drifting together.”

The Adventure Continues April 2019 took in Robinson Crusoe island, a tropical land with a 3,000ft peak for hiking and an almost “Jurassic Park” feel to it. Gayle Force is one of only two yachts to have visited the far-flung location this year, a land of both beauty and unpredictability. “You have to be lucky with the weather. The exposure is pretty bad”, explains Captain Scott. “But there’s a lushness to it – steep green hillsides with a rocky, volcanic landscape. The sea is abundant, the fish are gigantic, the lobster are everywhere.” Stumbling upon fantastic food and a one-man brewery, the island will go down as being “more memorable than Antarctica” for the Laufers.

For both the Laufers and Captain Scott, a key element of the enjoyment is “to tie the history of the boat back” and to see Gayle Force do what she was built for. “In 2003 Gayle Force was the most technologically advanced vessel in under 30m, so it’s interesting to see what she’s doing now”, he enthuses. Since 1961, Vripack has been involved in more than 7,400 projects, from the smallest of boats to the largest of vessels, delivering interior design and external styling that is underpinned by pioneering naval architecture. “Vripack were instrumental in bridging Patriot’s history to present day Gayle Force”, says Captain Scott. “The ability to access history of build and actually work with some of the Vripack team that were on the build, throughout our yard time and chosen modifications, was priceless.”

ounded in the early 1900s, Bilgin Yachts is an Istanbul-based, world-renowned shipyard with a unique know-how in the yachting sector. With management in the hands of the fifth generation of the Bilgin family, the yard has grown to operate four shipyard facilities with a total area of 40,000m2. This includes furniture and metal working facilities, which in turn allow all areas of yacht construction to remain almost entirely in-house. Bilgin Yachts has enjoyed public celebration in recent years, listed among SYBASS’s world’s top 20 ship builders in 2019 after its successful delivery of 46.8m Bilgin 155 (Giaola-Lu) in 2016, which was recognised as a finalist at both the World Superyacht Awards and ShowBoat Design Awards in 2017. This was swiftly followed up by 48m Nerissa (now Starburst III following her sale in January 2019), the first Bilgin 156, and also an awards finalist for its interior design and naval architecture.

Lilium Shortly after the sale of the first Bilgin 156 in March 2019, Bilgin Yachts announced the launch of its second 156 hull from its facility in the West Istanbul Marina. Bilgin 156-II, named Lilium launched with a private ceremony in May 2019, and became the last Bilgin yacht to be launched in the shipyard’s former facility in Kucukcekmece of Istanbul. The 48m yacht boasts a roomy, refreshing and luminous layout, complemented by a harmonious interior colour palette of white and golden touches, and brass accents. “It is always exciting to see the end result of our designs”, says exterior designer Emrecan Özgün of Unique Yacht Design. “After the success of Nerissa, we can’t wait to see how Lilium will affect the ones who see her. She is a proud

example of today’s globally recognised Turkish craftsmanship.” Mr Özgün continues: “At the beginning of the project, Ismail Sengün gave a brief saying that Lilium should not be much different than her sister ship Nerissa. We tried to play mostly with the interior colours. Personally, I wanted to feel the ‘peaceful brightness’ in the interior. During the design process, our biggest challenge was to arrange the percentage of the materials and to avoid using vivid colors.”

Standing Apart With a beam of 8.75m, Lilium’s interior and exterior living areas allow for plenty of socialising hubs. The sundeck sports a glass-bottomed jacuzzi with surrounding sunbeds and U-shape seating areas, which can be viewed from the central staircase that spirals through the yacht, with specially designed Caviar lights inspired by nature. Lilium’s stand out features include the reformatted galley, which makes it easy for the crew to move around without interrupting guests, and the pantry is now located between the galley and the living room. Lilium can accommodate up to ten guests in five cabins, including an owner’s suite equipped with a private jacuzzi on the owner’s deck. Lilium will make her international debut at the 2019 Monaco Yacht Show. Ismail Sengün, CEO of Bilgin Yachts comments: “The Bilgin 156-II is named after the beautiful white flower Lilium as a sign of our promise to the yacht owners: A sunny and happy day on a deck.”

WORDS BY JuLIA ZALTZMAN

How have the demands of superyacht owners and charter guests changed since you founded SuperYachtsMonaco 10 years ago? Those demands have changed dramatically, and that’s because the demographic of the client has changed a lot over time. Clients have become increasingly younger, not to mention richer earlier on, so the shifting demands are now in line with what younger people want. This translates to far more radical ideas in terms of design, and actual facilities and capabilities of yachts, so that’s a general trend. In terms of specific examples, both Serene and Faith have elaborate spas that feature snow rooms.

With the younger demographic coming through, do you believe this is mainly young entrepreneurs who are making their money early or inherited income? I think it’s a bigger percentage of younger people who have made their money early, but there is an inheritance legacy part of the market, too. If you look at the raft of young tech billionaires alone, this is the sort of demographic I’m talking about.

locations and away from the standard milk run, such as St Tropez, Monaco, Cannes, Sardinia. They’re looking for something further than that typical yachting triangle. And, therefore the vessels have greater capability and greater autonomy, with longer ranges and advanced toys like helicopters on board; all the things that make remote destinations accessible. I think explorer travel is a mind-set thing, it’s not about the vessel itself. You can question whether a yacht is an explorer vessel or not, but what parameters are being used to define an explorer vessel? The definition is in the mind of its owner. It’s perfectly feasible to cruise the Northwest Passage in a 45m motoryacht. Latitude, for example, has achieved that more

>>

Jim Evans, Managing Director of SuperYachtsMonaco.

And the rise of explorer travel and remote cruising – that also applies to this younger demographic? Yes, that’s absolutely true. Everybody wants to do something different to that of their parents’ generation. People are moving towards far-flung

BROKERAGE & CHARTERING

More yachts are visiting the likes of Indonesia and Asia during the winter season now.

than once, with no ice-breaking capability, no ice-class classification, no helicopter, and in fact no features that would mark her out to be an explorer yacht. however, Latitude has done some of the most amazing exploration of any yacht floating today. I think people can get constrained and confined by definitions, but actually it’s just how big your imagination is.

Does this extend to winter season destinations too? I think people are getting a little tired with the Caribbean, especially those who have visited more than once. we are seeing more yachts that are visiting the likes of Indonesia and Asia during the winter season now, and the options are varied. From the Maldives and Seychelles, to even Madagascar, people really do look for that next thing. It’s reminiscent of the 90’s backpacking culture, whereby people are looking for that mythic beach or ancient undiscovered tribe located up a river that their yacht can access. There is definitely a romantic feel about yachting at the moment, which I think is great, as it’s giving the industry a new impetus and energy. The main constraint for many yacht owners is family commitments. That can dictate how explorative and remote owners want to go, as can changing time zones and internet connectivity, particularly for owners looking to work while on board. But, in terms of onboard

s u p e r y a c h t - i n d u s t r y.c om

Jim Evans.indd 35

infrastructure available today, yacht owners are becoming increasingly savvy about employing crew that have more than one skill, which makes travelling further easier. Every single crew member on board Cloud Break has a second profession, not just a hobby, including a paramedic, concert guitarist, competition dJ, kite-surfing instructor, so the yacht itself is not limited.

In terms of the charter industry, multiple digital platforms have emerged in recent years, some with affiliations with traditional brokerage houses. What is your opinion on how these cater for charter guests? Chartering a yacht at hundreds of thousands (or even millions) of Euros per week is actually very far from “routine”. Yet, in the most simplistic of views, you might draw a parallel between the traditional travel agency structures and today’s yacht charter brokers. You might argue that if the vast majority of travel bookings can now be made online without an agent’s involvement, then by the same token so can yacht charter bookings. however, if you break it all down and look at what a bespoke yacht charter booking experience consists of – one in which you use a charter broker that is – it begins to seem obvious that a low margin digital platform could simply never compete. with that said, however, we would certainly be open to partnering with an online platform in the

future. we’re not in a rush to do it, but I think there will be a lot of emerging players in that market, and it’s obviously the way forward. But there has to be a combination of the two – traditional brokerage and digital platform. You need some human element and experience, and you have to have the reach to digital players, so I think it’s a great marriage of the two.

Environmental concerns and ocean conservation are at the forefront of people’s minds at present, have you seen an increase in requests from owners or charter guests for yachts with hybrid propulsion or renewable energy? Yes, we have, it’s on the rise, it’s coming. The best comparison at present is the Toyota Prius; we’re at that sort of level within the yachting world. There is nothing that is Tesla-like yet, there is no yacht that runs completely on batteries in a truly efficient way that can accommodate guests as well. At present, batteries can be used to take the hotel load on the engine, and we can power the lights and music, but that’s pretty much it. however, we are receiving a lot more call for it from clients. And in general, the yachting industry certainly embraces its wider environmental responsibilities. There is less single-use plastic on board, there is waste management, and it’s across the spectrum, from aluminium straws to hybrid propulsion.

elivered in february 2019, benetti’s fullcustom superyacht spectre is the third yacht commissioned from the italian shipyard by new york businessman and serial yacht owner John staluppi. much like its predecessors (52m Quantum of solace and 60m diamonds are forever) the latest build sports a bond-themed name, as well as some state-of-the-art onboard technology that Q would be proud of. the onboard technology installed by specialist Videoworks includes audio-video, network, telephony, domotics (automated systems) and cctV. located in a small dedicated rack room with seven full-height racks, the customised aV system is fully centralised and has been specifically designed to fit into the available space. in addition to the kaleidescape film and music server, there is a server dedicated to the crew, who can access it via ipads. with the kaleidescape provider, Videoworks has managed the pre-loading of approximately 1,800 dVds and blu-ray discs (music and films), complete with covers, metadata, info on actors, trailers and special content. in this way owners are guaranteed a customised service that is certainly convenient to use.

ersatility is at the heart of the new Evo t2 tender. at 7m, Evo Yachts’ latest custom delivery fits neatly into a garage, and yet offers the flexible option of being a luxurious day cruiser too. the italian shipyard has also now announced that the Evo t2 will enter series production as part of a new range of day boats for superyachts. commissioned by the owner of a 46m sanlorenzo superyacht and conceived by italian designer valerio rivellini, the Evo t2 has been designed around the owner who wanted something “luxurious, elegant and high performance, all at the same time”. central to the vision is an innovative steering console that can be raised or lowered electrically to make driving easier. crucially, with the console fully lowered, the entire boat has a height of just five foot making it just the right

size to fit into tender garages and beach areas. for added wow factor, the Evo t2 can also be controlled from the touch of a smartphone.

A New Challenge Key features (if somewhat unusual for a 7m boat) include a sofa that can be transformed into a sun lounger for guests wanting to travel in style, a table for eight, and a hydraulic sea ladder (for ease of getting in and out of water). a steel fridge for cool refreshments and a detachable bimini for added shade make this a comfortable tender, while a towing hook for water skiing and the capability to house and charge two seabobs make this an exciting option for watersports enthusiasts. and it’s fast too, with a cruising speed of 28kts and a rapid top speed of 36kts thanks to a

Function and Form also designed with the crew in mind, four balanced lifting points ensure optimum handling even in rough seas, an optimised hull delivers excellent seaworthiness, and an accessible engine compartment means swift troubleshooting when under pressure. clean lines and minimalism hold their own on this exclusive tender, which in perfect Evo style associates functionality and versatility with a focus on form. the comprehensive range of equipment on Evo t2 makes it a safe boat as well as offering relaxation and entertainment too. it is fitted with a battery charger, an engine battery, a services battery, a 12-24v converter, a quay cable, predisposition for housing and the charge of two seabobs, table for eight people, an electric winch, a towing hook for water skiing and a hydraulic sea ladder.

unya’ – the turkish word for ‘world’ – is a facility that keeps reinventing itself. the waterfront site where the current shipyard sits has been in the ergun family since the 1950s and was originally the location of their holiday home. the family took the opportunity to develop it into the ursa shipyard in 1983 after the area was re-zoned in a government move to shift the growing commercial shipping industry out of the city centre. in 2005, the current President, sedat ergun, took over the reins of the company and transformed the shipyard into an advanced technology facility, dedicated to the construction and refit of superyachts. at the same time a new brand, dunya yachts, was born to compete with leading northern european shipyards in the

construction of large yachts. to date, the yard has delivered 73m axioma (ex-red square) in 2013 and has completed more than 25 refits on yachts up to 72m in length.

A two-step, deep-V hull means increased agility.

“The name Onda brings with it a certain pedigree and trust that a boat will deliver comfort, performance and seaworthiness,” adds Riginos. “But the features and capabilities of the 331GT mark a new era for our open tenders. We have worked hard across the board to create the sense that the 331GT is not just a support boat or tender to a superyacht, but that it is a ‘mini yacht’ – a standalone boat, in its own right. With a number of deliveries expected this year, and orders taking us through 2020, many of our clients have already seen the potential of the Onda 331GT.”

Brand Pedigree A trusted name in European boat construction for over 50 years, Onda Tenders has spanned the leisure and international military sectors with impressive results since it was founded in 1962. After the company’s acquisition in 2016 by the family-owned yacht broker and dealer Riginos Yachts, its focus turned to providing the market with superyacht tenders from 8-12m. Onda’s tenders are constructed at a state-of-the-art,

10,000m2 facility in Thiva, Greece. The company’s controlled and standardised production process combined with an impressive network of suppliers and materials sourced across Europe and the USA ensure that its superyacht tenders meet the highest of standards. Working with the Mannerfelt Design Team, a name synonymous with excellence in the boat design world, Onda has created a new range of custom superyacht tenders to challenge the status quo. Onda Tenders currently has three boat models in its fleet: the 321L limousine tender, the 331GT open tender and the 341P patrol tender.

On the Water Living At the centre of the 331GT’s deck design is an appreciation for life on the water and what that involves. With over four decades of experience helping clients to find their ideal boat or tender, George Riginos and his father Peter are in an ideal position at the helm of Onda, with a

mission to build boats that deliver all the elements superyacht owners or crew could need. Coupled with Ted Mannerfelt’s background in automotive design, and his company’s acclaim for creating boats that win world championship offshore racing titles, the result is an extremely stylish open tender that has an abundance of practical features. “We are proud of what has been achieved with the 331GT, through extensive in-house research and development from our engineering team as well as the work we have done with Ocke and Ted Mannerfelt,” says Riginos. “We have combined our accumulated knowledge with that of the award-winning design team, resulting in an exceptional 10-metre open tender.”

What are the main types of requests that you receive from your superyacht customer base? the main reason for any yacht owner to install an scr system is to reduce the nox exhaust, which is a regulatory measure for all ships that exceed 500gt and/or 24m and will be sailing in emission controlled areas (eca). however, typically, also high up on the agenda for a superyacht owner is to install a dpf system that will ensure no soot lands on the deck of the yacht. or, in cases where the exhaust is located under water, to ensure that no soot floats

around the yacht, enabling the owner and their guests to swim in clean water.

How does Emigreen’s advanced emissions control system differ from other options on the market?

How have new regulations impacted the yachting industry?

from knowing what the features of the engines are and knowing what the specific engine needs in the field of back-pressure (particularly in relation to soot quantity, exhaust gas volume flow and exhaust gas temperature coming from the engine), the scr and/or dpf will be specifically designed to accommodate this, also taking into consideration the available space in the vessel. on top of this, the emigreen systems take over the full noise attenuation required for the yacht. we can supply systems with a standardised design, but those will often not fit the vessel, or be at the very least inconvenient for the yacht’s available space. therefore, the custom designed systems are more suitable for yachts, and this becomes especially relevant when

relating to nox exhaust for seagoing vessels, Imo-III has been valid since 2016. this means that for eca-areas (the east and west coast of america/canada and the caribbean) an scr system is required (nox reduction). however, from 2021, the baltic and north sea will be added too. at present in norway, owners have to pay a nox tax, which makes an scr appealing for tax-reduction purposes too. dpf is not yet mandatory for seagoing vessels.

How can Emigreen products help superyachts to future proof for tomorrow? In the case of new builds, a standard engine builder’s scr can be used, nevertheless, an emigreen scr can also be installed, enabling the yacht to exactly comply to the same regulations with a much more flexible aftertreatment system design. one of the

One of the advantages of installing both emigreen’s scr and dpf systems is that when combined they work in cooperation better than when the sCR and DPF derive from different suppliers.

advantages of installing both emigreen’s scr and dpf is that this combination cooperates better than when the scr and dpf derive from different suppliers.

What new innovations and projects are you currently working on? the exact details of our current developments need to remain undisclosed for the time being, but what I can say is that we are now developing systems that fit smaller engines as well as much larger engines and have a different method of control, as well as different regeneration techniques.

Can Emigreen products be retrofitted? absolutely. It is one of our specialities to design a system that fits the existing surroundings.

What is the biggest challenge when it comes to educating around the subject of yacht emissions? considering the fact that usually the owner of a superyacht is less involved in the technical requirements of a yacht, it can be challenging to convince them to reserve enough space for the systems. owners want to use onboard space for more toys and submarines, but at times, the space can be better used for cleaning exhaust gasses. convincing an owner that our systems can be used to maintain a pristine yacht is simple, but cleaning nox is often a harder sell.

s u p e r y a c h t - i n d u s t r y.c om

Emigreen.indd 51

What has been Emigreen’s greatest accomplishment so far? we have installed dpf systems for engines with over 2,750 kw of power on some of the most special superyachts on the water, both motor and sail assisted. but we can also say that our systems are used by Jan de nul, one of the largest dredging companies in the sector. on top of this, we supply damen shipyards with our scr-silencer combinations for Imo tier III vessels. this is something that we are really proud of. our systems are installed on vessels that require absolute reliability, and if emigreen has the trust of companies like this, it must say something about the quality of the products we put in the market and the company emigreen itself.

Owners want to use onboard space for more toys and submarines, but at times, the space can be better used for cleaning exhaust gasses.

customisable to specific client requirements. Offering an optimised user experience, Yachtware aims to become a trusted partner to crew, managers and owners, giving them greater visibility, increasing efficiency, enabling automation of processes and ultimately, freeing up time for more valuable tasks.

New Installments Since launching its refit management software, Yachtware has listened to feedback from the field and responded with the creation of an onboard cash and card management solution. Currently in the final stages of build it will be launching in September 2019. “The same principles apply, which are removing the need for spreadsheets and automating data entry”, says David Nabarro, Yachtware Commercial and Operational Director and experienced chartered accountant. “It basically does the same thing for onboard expenses as it does for refits: massively reduce data entry and increase visibility and control of crew spending.” The procedure is simple. Users take a photo of a receipt with their Smartphone or tablet. The Yachtware software reads the receipt and extracts the relevant data, such as amount, date, supplier etc. It enables the crew to run

speed up its development of electric and hybrid drive trains for construction, agriculture and in-house technology, Torqeedo itself has leveraged the move to accelerate its development of sustainable and modern mobility on the water. while boating only accounts for 1.3% of the world’s entire electric mobility, 50% of this has been achieved by Torqeedo.

id you know that the hottest 20 years on earth since climate records began in 1850 have all occurred in the last 23 years? moreover, the hottest five years on record have been the last five years, and 2019 is on schedule to maintain this shocking trend.

in short, Torqeedo’s mission is to convert fossil fuel and combustion engine boating into lower carbon electric mobility. marrying a passion for boating with scientific progress and technology, it is continually striving to improve its range of electric drive train systems, and at present has more than 95,000 electric systems in the field. This is predominantly in the field of day sailing and tenders (below 8m or ribs below 5hp).

for most innovations in the 21st century, being a green and sustainable product is near enough reduced to a prerequisite. simply producing electric alternatives to combustion engines won’t cut it, says co-founder and ceo of Torqeedo dr christoph ballin. “our products need to be more sustainable than what is currently on the market, and with a competitive edge. This means we never just deliver an electric motor or battery or one component. Typically we deliver a complete package required to drive the boat; both lower and higher power systems.”

MARINE PROPULSION & POWER GENERATION overall efficiency is another of Torqeedo’s core principles, and that means comparing how much power goes into a drive system, and how much comes out, as opposed to putting emphasis on the propeller shaft power (which is the way automobile performance is measured). “in boating, the propeller losses are substantial, so shaft power does not denote the amount of power generated for the boat”, explains dr ballin. “propellers also vary and can lose up to 75% of the shaft power.”

Travel 1103 C motor compared to the automotive industry, boating accounts for a much smaller slice of the pie. This means it takes a lot longer for the technologies to translate to the marine side, which is why the yachting sector is not as yet on a par with Tesla. it also limits Torqeedo from being able to provide products for all boating sectors, and at present is yet to provide a competitive solution for superyachts. however, when it comes to kayaking, sailing, ferries, water taxis, rescue life-saving and tenders, momentum is substantially growing, and in some cases, electric is not only competitive, but superior.

climate activist greta Thunberg made a stand against climate change by sailing 3,000 miles across the atlantic from plymouth, uK, to new york city aboard the high-tech foiling sailboat malizia ii, equipped with solar panels and underwater turbines to generate electricity during the journey. in order to avoid the extremely high carbon emissions from air travel, Thunberg chose to make the two-week transatlantic journey via sailboat to attend the upcoming un climate summits in new york and chile. The aim was to demonstrate that it is possible to switch to climate neutral mobility. “convincing governments and international institutions to enforce laws that will protect mankind and biodiversity is of the utmost importance for the future of humanity”, says pierre casiraghi, founder of Team malizia and co-skipper. “Team malizia and i are proud to take greta across the atlantic in this challenging mode of transport. unfortunately, sailing is still

the only way to do so without fossil fuel emissions. hopefully this will change in the near future.” in support of Team malizia Torqeedo provided electric port and harbour support vessels on both sides of the pond. in other words, Torqeedo-powered electric boats assisted Team malizia with docking, towing, passenger transport and general harbour support that would typically have been provided by combustion- powered boats. “fighting the climate crisis requires that we all take a hard look at not only our individual choices, but also at the stands we choose to take as business leaders, as politicians and as citizens”, says dr ballin. “we have the technology to build better, cleaner transportation, whether it’s over land, in the air, or on the sea. it’s time we do so.”

sailing dinghies and tenders are Torqeedo’s best-selling area, driven by its 3hp electric solution with an integrated lithium battery. providing the same amount of power and lighter than a combustion engine, the 3hp outboard motor starts with the push of a button, and is quieter, cleaner, solar chargeable, waterproof, and can be controlled from a smart phone. in april 2019, Torqeedo unveiled its latest product, the ultra-quiet direct-drive Travel 1103 c motor. delivering equivalent propulsive power to a 3hp combustion outboard and suitable for boats up to 1.5t, the integrated onboard computer with gps-calculated range and runtime data, fully variable forward and reverse, make it both easy to use and easy to maintain. equipped with a lightweight, highperformance lithium-ion battery that simply clicks on top of the motor, it has an integrated usb port for charging a mobile phone or camera, and a combined weight of just 17kg. “since their launch, Travel motors have become the preferred outboards for dinghies, tenders and small sailboats”, said dr ballin. “The Travel 1103 c does everything a small combustion outboard can do but it’s lighter, much quieter, easier to use, cleaner to handle and store, and more environmentally friendly.”
