WELCOME

Cheers to 15 years of SuperYacht Industry 2020 STARTED WITH A BANG. MANY NEW SUPER YACHTS WERE ORDERED AND A FINE SELECTION OF STUNNING VESSELS WERE LAUNCHED. NUMEROUS REFITS AND REPAIRS WERE DONE OVER THE WINTER SEASON. BUT SADLY, THAT BRIGHT BANG QUICKLY FIZZLED. TIMES ARE UNCERTAIN TODAY FOR EVERYONE, AS THE coronavirus holds the world in its grip. Many countries around the globe are in full or partial lockdown and the world’s economy is taking a beating. This years’ first issue focuses on Italy, the first country in Europe to suffer harshly from the virus, and in this edition we will celebrate Italy the way its people have celebrated their country during the lockdown, in grandiose style. In our ‘Focus on Italy’ pages we look at the great history of shipyards such as Benetti, the yard that recently launched ‘Ink’, the first Diamond 145 and flagship of the Class category. We feature Ohana on our pages, the latest addition to the Palumbo Superyachts (PSY) Extra line. But Italy has even more in store for us, a grand total of seven new yachts are being built by Perini Navi, Rosetti Superyachts proudly presents explorer yacht ‘Orca’, and Rossinavi Yachts has just launched the 50m M/Y ‘Lel’. Our Refit and Repair section features Project Ragnar, a 70m conversion project launched by Icon Yachts. Then there is Snow 5, the second yacht in Bilgin’s 47.5m series that was recently delivered to her owner in Miami. We feature a story on the intensive refits that are carried out by UK’s Pendennis Shipyard on Lady E and Marala. And Palumbo Superyachts has various refit and repair projects as well that have either just been launched or are on its way such as M/Y Kolaha, M/Y Commitment, and M/Y Whispering Angel. This issue also sees various NAVCOM and Marine Electronics operators in business. With Alewijnse Marine contracted by Amels to perform the complete electrical systems installation on the first two vessels of its new range of Limited Editions superyacht, the Amels 60. Arksen and Praxis are partnering on a solution for 20-30m Explorer yachts, and Inmarsat and ITC Global announced a five-year strategic collaboration to expand options for yachting customers. 2020 also marks fifteen successful years of Super Yacht Industry. At Yellow & Finch Publishers, we are very proud of what we have accomplished in the past fifteen years, and we strive to position the magazine even more strongly as THE platform for suppliers to the superyacht industry in the years to come. I hope you will enjoy this new edition of Super Yacht Industry as much we do. Sanny Ensing | Editor

Introducing Arrow A large crowd of Feadship personnel and invited guests joined the owner and his party at the beginning of this year for the christening and official naming ceremony of the newest member of the Feadship family. As darkness fell, the profile of the 75-metre Arrow was dramatically illuminated to showcase her swooping lines, pioneering architectural shapes, and razor-sharp bow. Having originally left the construction hall at the Feadship yard in Aalsmeer, the Netherlands, in mid-December 2019, this launch event was the first occasion that the nearly completed Arrow was seen with her lighting added and exterior outfitting complete. A smart pavilion was especially erected on the quay next to the yacht for the presentation.

NEWS IN BRIEF Turkey’s largest yacht launched Bilgin Yachts is proud to announce the launch of the first hull of 80m Bilgin 263 series, the largest yacht ever built by a Turkish shipyard so far. The private launch ceremony took place in the Bilgin Yachts facility in West Istanbul Marina. The yacht will now be outfitted and ready for delivery. The shipyard considers this series as a key milestone in its path towards becoming one of the prominent brands in the world. Bilgin Yachts has currently built three units of the 80m Bilgin 263 series. The second hull – which is already sold – is planned to be launched in 2021 and following that, the third hull of the model will be delivered to her owner in the same year. The series emphasises ecofriendliness, featuring a special exhaust system that provides 100% clean air emissions.

CRN receives IMO Tier III certification CRN, part of Ferretti Group, is the first shipyard in Italy to receive IMO Tier III certification for the CRN M/Y 137, a soon-to-be-delivered fully custom steel and aluminium 62m megayacht. That makes this yacht the first IMO TIER III-compliant megayacht built in Italy, to be followed by the other three fully-custom CRN yachts currently under construction: the 62m CRN M/Y 138, 70m CRN M/Y 139, and 60m CRN M/Y 141. IMO Tier III is the International Maritime Organization standard that enshrines the naval industry’s commitment to safeguarding the environment. CRN has attained certification right from its first pleasure vessel to be delivered in early 2020. As a result, and in accordance with the regulation, a certified reduction of 70% in harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in engine exhaust gases is now guaranteed for all CRN motor yachts.

NEWS IN BRIEF Feadship launches 99.95m Moonrise The 99.95m Moonrise was unveiled by the Feadship yard in Makkum, the Netherlands, in February this year. She successfully marries sleek sensual lines with a modern masculine profile. A wide range of elegant details, long hull windows, a glorious grey hull, and striking vertical bow add to the elegance of the design by Studio De Voogt. In addition to her imposing length, Moonrise has a very impressive volume, thanks to a 15.50m beam. This has generated some fabulous interior space for sixteen people in eight staterooms. There are also exceptionally high-end crew accommodations for up to 32 crew, which are bathed in natural light and designed to ensure a premium standard for those living and working on the yacht. Like every new Feadship, Moonrise benefits from the latest thinking in terms of smooth operation and environmental responsibility.

YN 18850 Project Triton Heesen is thrilled to announce that Project Triton, the second in the 50m Steel Class, left the outfitting shed in preparation for sea trials in the North Sea. At 50m, Project Triton is a true blue water motor yacht with a traditional full-displacement steel hull below the 500GT threshold. Designed and engineered by Heesen’s in-house team of experts, Triton is built according to the highest Dutch quality standards. Defined by a flared and bulbous bow and an easily driven hull form, she glides through water with great ease. Powered by twin MTU 8V4000 M63 engines, she will reach a top speed of 15 knots and have a transoceanic range of 3,800nm at the cruising speed of 12 knots. British studio Reymond Langton has created a contemporary interior defined by a linear and clean environment.

Former managing director Uwe Kosmehl states, “After talking to some people in the industry and our open-minded search for a successor, our former employee Björn Rump presented us his business plan for the future of SAILTEC. Björn worked for us as technical sales manager from 2003 to 2008. We really liked the plan and are convinced it will be successful. Our team was also enthusiastic, because everyone knows each other from the old days.” As one of the first tasks, Björn Rump considers adding some new brands to the portfolio and he will push the digitisation within SAILTEC.

NEWS IN BRIEF Palma Superyacht Show cancelled due to COVID-19 The Palma International Boat Show organisers have decided to cancel the 2020 event due to the ongoing nature of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event had already been postponed from the initial dates at the end of April and start of May, but organisers have now decided that the new dates in June were also not feasible. In a statement they said: “We feel that we cannot guarantee the health and safety of the show’s exhibitors and visitors and have made the decision based on our responsibility to the nautical sector as a whole. Although the difficult but necessary decision to cancel this year’s event is disappointing, we can assure you that we will be working hard towards the Palma Superyacht Show’s next edition and are confident to return stronger than ever in 2021.” Photo courtesy of Stuart Pearce.

New 300t travelift of Varadero Valencia starts up Varadero Valencia has launched its new 300t travelift with the lifting capability of two large-tonnage yachts. With this new travelift, the shipyard doubles its lifting and launching capacity, offering its services to yachts of greater weight that to date could only carry out works in the water, leaving some jobs pending for which being on the dry was necessary. With the incorporation of this new travelift, the shipyard now has a total of three travelifts, along with its 150t and 50t ones. This great improvement to the equipment allows faster manoeuvres on the esplanade as they are able to hoist more than one yacht in the same day onto the dry, reducing the manoeuvre time. Before starting up, the new travelift carried out several tonnage tests to confirm its lifting capacity and its launching and manoeuvrability capabilities. Its high performance was verified and far exceeded the different tests performed.

Schottel EcoPeller scores with compact version German propulsion expert Schottel recently presented a space-saving LC installation variant of its proven Rudder EcoPeller (SRE). By dispensing with the gearbox in the L variant and thus featuring lower noise and vibration levels, it is ideal for the yachting sector. These compact variants open up greater design freedom in the stern area for ship designers, increase onboard comfort for passengers, and create more space for other equipment. The new SRE LC variants cover the power range starting at 500kW. The Schottel EcoPeller’s combination of powerful propeller thrust and fin makes it suitable for a wide range of applications. With its special, hydrodynamically optimised design, the SRE generates maximum steering forces, thereby enabling top performance in terms of overall efficiency and course stability. This, in turn, reduces fuel consumption and ensures lower operating costs and emissions.

the SeaXplorer design team, the Damen Research Laboratory, Azure Yacht Design and EYOS Expeditions. The range consists of five designs from 55m to 105m in length. The SeaXplorers are the world’s first purpose-built, Polar Code compliant expedition yachts with full capability for remote destinations; from Polar to Tropical areas. The vessels can remain on station in remote areas for several weeks, with provisions for between 30 to 40 days of full service with no port calls. The SeaXplorer range has an aft expedition centre, a multifunctional space that can be tailor-made to fit a customer’s requirements, such as a helicopter hangar, a Beach Club, a tender slipway or a fitness centre. The largest

model, the SeaXplorer 105, can accommodate up to 30 guests and the interiors in the guest areas match the top level of an Amels superyacht. Each model also has an observation lounge on the owner’s deck, which offers great views of the surrounding landscapes.

O

rca’s design is strongly inspired by nature. “The organic design traits mimic the orca or killer whale, the largest and most powerful member of the dolphin family”, says Fulvio Dodich, CEO of Rosetti Superyachts (RSY). “Instantly recognisable by their distinctive blackand-white colouring, these sea mammals roam the world’s oceans from the Arctic and Antarctic to the Tropics, which is exactly what our explorer yacht is designed to do.”

These traits are clearly evident in the yacht’s robust profile with its wrap-around glazing, bold

superstructure styling, and a radar mast that resembles a tall dorsal fin. And if there’s any further doubt, there is even a classic ‘orca eyespot’ – a white side patch – on the owner’s deck level that lights up at night. Orca is the result of a collaboration between two expert groups in the marine field, RSY and Meccano Engineering. Meccano Engineering has been providing specialised engineering and consultancy services to the marine, shipbuilding, and energy sectors for the last two decades.

FOCUS 0N ITALY

We can offer high quality together with production flexibility to keep up with the world of explorers.

With a 12m beam and an estimated gross tonnage of up to 1,300GT, Orca is developed on four decks plus a tank-top deck, but owners can choose from various deck layouts. The standard version has an open main deck in the stern for storing more tenders and toys, as well as a touch & go helipad. Alternatively, this area can feature an infinity pool overlooking the transom or include a raised helipad with a pool and spa zone inside. A large garage is located on the lower deck aft, which can hold two large tenders or several jet skis and other water toys. The guest accommodation, comprising two VIP suites and two cabins, is located forward on the same deck level and is served by the main staircase and an elevator that connects with all deck levels leading up to the sun deck. The crew accommodation is situated in the bow. The main deck interior hosts the guest area with a large main salon, dining room, and another spacious VIP suite forward. The galley and crew services are on the portside. Access to the mooring deck in the forepeak is possible via side companionways on the main deck. This area, which covered in rough seas for safety reasons, accentuates the height of the imposing bow. The bridge deck features the owner’s apartment with His and Her bathroom,

walk-in wardrobes, a study, and a large gym. The suite overlooks the open aft deck that serves as a private terrace. The captain’s cabin is behind the wheelhouse.

RSY RSY is a division of the Rosetti Marino Group, which draws on the group’s extensive shipbuilding heritage. RSY has a massive production capacity with direct access to the Adriatic, where they can build up to 140m in length. The company designs and builds explorers, supply vessels, and superyachts in both steel and aluminum. IT was founded in 2017, when the Rosetti Marino Group turned its shipbuilding experience and technical knowhow towards the superyacht sector, securing its position as leader in the engineering and construction of commercial vessels.

In an interview, RSY CEO and partner Fulvio Dodich outlines what makes RSY the go-to yard for explorer and supply vessels from 35-140m. Q: What are the current vessels in build at the yard? A: “Our San Vitale shipyard is now focused on building the 38m explorer, with exterior design and naval engineering by HydroTec and interiors designed by Burdisso Capponi Yachts and Design. The delivery of the explorer is set for spring 2021.” Q: Are you making any new investments in the shipyard? A: “We have the possibility to enlarge our facilities. We will concentrate on this enlargement as soon as we have a concrete need to build different yachts of relevant dimensions. In September 2019, we acquired the license to build a new 132 x 32 x 32m shed with luxury offices.”

RSY CEO and partner Fulvio Dodich.

projects and turn them into reality, with some prospects and designers located in different countries. At the same time, we are focusing on building and reinforcing our brand awareness, which is a key selling point by itself for a newbuild shipyard. Among the future new yachts, a special place is dedicated to our RSY 65m explorer Orca, an ice class explorer.” Q: Why has RSY chosen to specialise in explorers and supply vessels instead of conventional superyachts? A: “Because it is a way of remaining faithful to the DNA of Rosetti Marino Group, which has designed and engineered over 120 commercial vessels. The group’s expertise and technical background are unmatched in the sector. This experience means we are able to build vessels that are extremely rugged and reliable from a design and construction point of view, but also offer outstanding performance in difficult sea conditions. We are also able to provide the vessel with the refined design features expected of a superyacht. Let’s say that

s u p e r y a c h t - i n d u s t r y. com

Rosetti.indd 15

thanks to the Rosetti team’s experience, we have both the hardware and software to build superbly seaworthy, high-quality yachts.” Q: There are numerous other shipyards building explorers, so what can RSY offer that other brands cannot? A: “The explorer market is crowded precisely because of the wide definition applied to this type of vessel, which has developed from vessels with the technical specifications to carry out voyages of discovery to yachts that simply want to visit more exotic destinations. We’re not discouraged by the wide choice of yachts on offer, because our own products meet the most stringent technical standards, from Ice Class to Polar Code, and can navigate anywhere in the world if required. We also have a massive production capacity with direct access to the Adriatic, where we can build up to 140m in length. We have a total area of 257,000m2, two building sheds of 25 x 100m, 4,000m2 of workshops, an assembly area with gantry crane, a 160 x 25m dry dock, and a 175m quay with a 7.5m water depth. These facilities are backed up by our solid engineering know-how and

technical expertise, and secured by our financial strength.” Q: Where would you like to position RSY in the yachting industry? A: “Because we can design and build explorers and superyachts in both steel and aluminum starting from 35m up to 140m and beyond, we’re aiming at the upper end of the spectrum in terms of size and quality. We have no technical limits, so we want to offer products with efficient performance that also turn heads in terms of looks and design.” Q: How do you see explorers developing in the future? A: “If I knew where the market was going, I’d be a billionaire! But jokes aside, quality is increasingly important, regardless of yacht size. We can offer high quality together with production flexibility to keep up with the world of explorers, whatever the future may bring.”

ith the addition of Ohana, the PSY Extra line gains a new 29m model. This new yacht confirms PSY’s determination to build something special and unique for its market. Ohana ensures that guests are in close contact with the sea, whilst enjoying maximum comfort. Thanks to the distinctive style of Francesco Guida, who took care of both the exterior and interior of the yacht, the captivating design of the vessel’s profile expresses her unique personality. The striking exterior uses a stunning contrast of clear and soft white fiberglass, aluminum surfaces, and elegant dark windows. These seamless windows provide floods of light and unparalleled panoramic views. One of Ohana’s main objectives is to further raise the standards for yachts under 30m, especially in terms of volume, comfort, liveability on board, and reduced consumption. Made of composite and in compliance with RINA standards and CE certifications, this yacht has impressive inside space and unique liveability.

Ohana’s lay-out On the main deck, a large living room makes for the ideal spot to relax. The spectacular C-shaped sofa and armchairs by Minotti ensure that socialising takes place in ultimate comfort. The TV screen is beautifully disguised inside a white wooden and grey leather starboard console.

The pantry The large and spacious pantry is located amidships. It provides separate access to the crew area, which includes three cabins, two bathrooms, a dinette, and laundry area.

Master suite Thanks to a 7.8m beam, the master cabin located on the main deck forward is the widest in this category of boats. The cabin has been designed to guarantee maximum privacy for its occupants.

Upper deck The cockpit features a wide C-shaped sofa and large television. The upper deck has been designed to function as a large open-air living area with the help of retractable windows. These windows ensure that one single large area can be created that includes the cockpit, with the sofa and TV screen, and the living area’s chaiselounges and 12-seater custom dining table.

Dining area The layout includes the bridge and the galley, which are situated aft and can directly communicate with the dining area via a large automatic window. A second relaxation area with dedicated sunbathing areas has been created in the bow, hiding a 4.35m tender with a hydraulic crane.

Below deck There are four guest cabins below deck: two VIP cabins with double beds and two cabins with single beds, all with their own ensuite bathroom.

Propulsion The Extra 93’s semi-displacement propulsion system relies on three powerful Volvo Penta IPS engines of 1,000hp each, capable of a maximum speed of 18.5kts and a cruising speed of 15kts.

The master cabin is the widest in this category of boats.

A new line Besides the Extra 93, the Extra range consists of the Extra 76, 86, the 86 Fast, the 120 Alloy, and the flagship 130 Alloy models. The new line of Extra Yachts specialises in the development of luxury yachts from 20m to 40m. This line is characterised by highly liveable interior and exterior spaces and low fuel consumption. Benefitting from the advanced technical experience and world-class Italian craftsmanship typical of ISA Yachts, Extra Yachts provides customers with all the advantages of being part of PSY, which also includes ISA Yachts, Columbus, Mondomarine, and Palumbo SY refit.

he twin contracts mark a significant milestone in the long-standing working relationship between Amels and Alewijnse. “This is an exciting contract for us in many ways,” comments Alewijnse Marine Sales Manager Dick Breure. “The cooperation with Amels is very important to us and we enjoy working with Amels. We have worked together on their complete 180 series, for which the 25th yacht is close to delivery. Because Amels builds their yachts in series, we have built a solid basis and know what is expected of us.” Alewijnse will deliver a total package of electrical installation and systems integration, including the hybrid propulsion system. “In terms of technology, these two contracts contain some very significant elements. The futureproof hybrid propulsion system is of particular importance”, explains Mr Breure. “Together with the peak shaving technology with battery power, this will yield reductions in fuel consumption and harmful emissions.”

In addition to the hybrid propulsion, Alewijnse is also delivering an Integrated Navigation System, Audio-Video systems, and IT network, and is introducing innovations to these systems, explains Mr Breure. “Everything that is part of the Audio-Video systems goes via IP, which makes it a more compact system. In previous series, the Audio-Video systems were partly installed in the guest suites and other luxury areas. As part of the design for this series we have, together with Amels, chosen a more central solution with a dedicated AV-space on each deck.”

The Amels 60 is the result of three years of research and development at Dutch superyacht builder Amels. Technically speaking, the 60-metre long vessel combines innovative naval architecture with a highly efficient, sophisticated, and sustainable form of hybrid propulsion technology. “Alewijnse is an important co-maker and partner for us – their systems can be found on more than twenty of our vessels”, comments Victor Caminada, Marketing Manager at Amels. “They have been closely involved in the development of the Amels 60 with us and we are now looking forward to working with them on these first two vessels of this new series of superyachts.”

Alewijnse is already well underway with the electrical engineering phase for the first Amels 60. The project will proceed into the production phase at Amels’ yard in the Netherlands, with a completion date scheduled for early 2022. “After supplying the electrical installations for a large number of Amels vessels in the past, we are proud to participate in the new Amels 60 series. It is the successor to Amels’ most successful series so far and we hope that this series will be at least as successful,” says Dick Breure. “Therefore, from a business perspective, this contract represents the continuity in our long-term partnership with Amels.”

he first Diamond 145, the flagship of the Class category and the only 44m fiberglass boat available on the market, was recently launched via the shipyard’s slipway. Ink, as the yacht is called, features an exterior design by Giorgio M. Cassetta, who worked alongside Benetti’s in-house team to put together the yacht’s fiberglass hull and glazed surfaces that flow along the entire length of the yacht. Then there is Oasis 40m, an innovative and ambitious yacht, of which seven units were sold in just a few months in 2019. Oasis 40m was conceived by Benetti in collaboration with UKbased firm RWD that designed the exteriors. Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture studio in New York designed the elegant and sophisticated interiors. The Benetti team is also working hard to deliver the 65m FB270, a custom yacht with a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure with a brandnew layout for the living area and an 160m2 apartment. FB270 is the first Benetti mega yacht to fly a Chinese flag and the first Benetti yacht built under China Classification Society and Lloyds Registry rules; the 70m custom yacht FB273 was launched just recently, and the 47m custom yacht FB704 was presented at the last Palm Beach International Boat Show.

Benetti’s heritage Established in 1873, Benetti is Italy’s oldest shipyard specialised in luxury yachts, and an icon of timeless style and construction excellence. Benetti designs, builds, and markets composite, steel, and aluminium yachts from 29m to 45m in length, as well as steel and aluminium yachts from 45m to over 100m in length. The company was founded in 1873, when Lorenzo Benetti (1844-1914) bought the Darsena Luca shipyard to start the Benetti shipyard. At the time, the yard built commercial vessels such as fishing boats and Mediterranean

trading ships. On his deathbed in 1914, Lorenzo’s sons Gino and Emilio renamed the yard Fratelli Benetti. They continued construction in wood, but also built oceangoing ships, and some private yachts, too. After Gino’s death in 1927, his sons Giuseppe and Virgilio took over his share. Maurizio and Bertani assisted their father Emilio.

World War II During World War II, the yard built mediumsized military vessels in steel but due to highly effective bombing, the production was severely limited. After the war, and with restrictions on Italian military production, the yard produced a steel-hulled diesel-powered vessel, named

Raphaelo. In 1954, Fratelli Benetti split its sailing and yacht business (Gino’s family) from the commercial ship building business (Emilio’s family). At this time, Emilio still had a share in, and chaired, both companies. When Emilio died in 1963, Fratelli Benetti was taken over by Giuseppe and his son Lorenzo. Lorenzo was the driver of the yacht business, moving instantly from wooden to steel construction. He designed three styles of yachts that brought the name Benetti to the world: the Delfino, the Tirreno, and the Meditteraneo lines (from 18m to 33m). Demand for these vessels outstripped the yard’s capacities. In 1978, the yard launched the

Benetti yacht categories Benetti Class The Class category is made up of the fiberglass yachts built by Benetti. The first model, the Benetti Classic, made its market debut in 1985. Since then, Benetti has built and sold more than 300 fiberglass yachts in this category, which today features four models: Delfino 95, Mediterraneo 116, Fast 125, and Diamond 145.

Benetti Oasis Benetti jointly developed the Oasis category with UK-based design firm RWD in response to the latest trends in design and planning.

Benetti B.YOND B.YOND is Benetti’s latest product: a new category of Expedition yacht based on tradition and the desires expressed by owners. B.YOND has a reduced environmental impact thanks to the E-Mode propulsion architecture developed for the shipyard by Siemens.

Benetti B.NOW The four models in the B.Now category, offered in four different lengths (50m, 55m, 63m, and 68m), are joint efforts by the shipyard and UK architecture firm RWD.

Benetti Custom These yachts from 45m to over 100m in length are tailormade and have resulted in two product families: Mega (45m to 80m) and Giga (80m+).

‘Viano’, a sailing yacht which on corrected times won the Admirals Cup. The yard launched ‘Nabila’ for Adnan Khashoggi in 1979, which at 83m and 2,465t was the largest yacht of its time.

Sale to Azimut Lorenzo died in 1980 and the company had financial difficulties until 1984, when the yard was bought by Paolo Vitelli, owner of Azimut, who renamed it Benetti Shipyard. The company is now part of the Azimut|Benetti group, also owner of Fraser Yachts.

Production sites Darsena Italia is Benetti’s storied headquarters in Viareggio in the Italian region of Tuscany, where the shipyard can concurrently build four yachts on a production site that also contains warehouses, offices, services, a technical area, and even a heliport. Also located in Viareggio is Darsena Luca, where three yachts up to 50m in length can be simultaneously built. Benetti uses the Comparini Area for final preparations on several Class models. The construction of bigger yachts takes place in Livorno, where

12 mega yachts can be built at the same time. The 215,000m2 production site has an ENACcertified heliport (ENAC is the Italian civil aviation authority) and an area devoted exclusively to servicing and refitting work, equipped with a 2,400t ship lift and a 300t travel lift.

Investment in technology As the Azimut|Benetti Group focuses on the product and on innovative technology, they strongly invest in research and development. The group boasts its own R&D centre, where over 20 engineers exclusively work on product and construction process innovation projects. The protection of environmental heritage is also promoted by adopting production management systems designed to reduce atmospheric emissions, and which are certified in compliance with ISO 14.001 since 2007. According to Azimut|Benetti Group President and founder Paolo Vitelli, “Our mission is to build the most beautiful, reliable, technological, and innovative yachts. And providing assistance anywhere, and at any time.”

con Yachts has launched its latest conversion: the 70m explorer superyacht Ragnar. The 2,450 GT ICE-breaker showed off her impressive exterior style designed by RWD yacht design. In her previous life, Ragnar was an ice-breaking multi-purpose support supply vessel Sanaborg, built in the Netherlands in 2012. Shipyard Icon Yacht has now transformed the vessel into a unique Arctic explorer superyacht. “The vessel proved to be an ideal platform for a conversion into a go-to-anywhere explorer yacht”, says Icon Yachts Project Manager Leon de Haas. “When we talk about explorer yachts, some yachts may have the looks, but only a few have the actual capabilities to cruise in remote areas. Ragnar offers an incredible range of 6,000 nautical miles,

enabling her owners and guests to explore the most remote areas of the planet.”

Rhino disguised as a swan Ragnar is an LY3-classed vessel with Arctic explorer capabilities, with a certified ICE Class A1 super hull, polar level insulation, and heated windows and doors, as well as eco teak made for extreme weather conditions. The vessel owes its ice-breaking capacity to its unique ICE class PC5-rated propulsion system. It has two electrically driven PC5 Wärtsilä Ice pods (FS 1750BOP-ICE), each rated at 1.750kW. Each pod has fixed, four-blade propellers with specific ice-churning capabilities. “The thrusters and propellers are made to break ice. Consequently, they not only cruise through icy

waters but they can also break the ice up to three meters”, explains Mr De Haas. “Originally built to confront rough weather conditions, she actually has a surplus of power! She is strong as a rhino disguised as a swan.”

Medieval war craftsmanship Ragnar’s design by British yacht designer RWD draws on a fusion of inspirations including medieval war craftsmanship, with the sleek lines of contemporary design and a touch of British heritage. The scope of the two-year conversion work includes the increase of luxury accommodation areas and a functional designated deck for toys with a fully-certified helicopter landing pad. It has a refuelling station, which means the helicopter does not need to

return to land for refuelling. Significant changes were made to the vessel’s bridge during the conversion. The original vessel Sanaborg was equipped with dual control helm positions. “The aft controls were specifically for towing operations and reverse sailing. These features are no longer required”, details Mr De Haas. “All aft controls have been removed and the NAVCOM equipment has been relocated to the forward area of the wheelhouse.”

Fully equipped with toys The refit design has ensured there is plenty of room for an impressive collection of ‘toys’ on board, reveals Mr De Haas. “There is a dream toy room! Ragnar carries a wide range, from helicopters to 4X4’s, hovercraft, open tenders,

The owner wanted this shocking contrast between a rough and tough exterior, yet a luxurious interior. It is a true diamond inside.” The vessel is now in its last conversion phase. The pre-commissioning of the technical and propulsion installations has started to ensure the vessel will perform well during her upcoming sea trials, and beyond. Following its delivery in April, Ragnar will be available for charter via Burgess Yachts.

rksen has partnered with Praxis Automation Technology to develop the hybrid propulsion systems and vessel management systems for its 20-30m range of explorer yachts. The Netherlands-based technology company develops, manufactures and delivers innovative ship automation, navigation and electric propulsion equipment for all types of vessels. According to Jim Mair, Arksen’s Technical Director, the companies share many common goals, notably the joint desire to design and build a more sustainable and environmentallyconscious ocean-going vessel. “When deciding upon the powering and propulsion for the Arksen range of vessels, it was vitally important that we found not only the most suitable equipment package, but the right partner to work with on the development of this most crucial of vessel systems”, comments Mr Mair. “Praxis Automation offered an excellent

package for the key powering, energy storage, distribution and propulsion systems we were seeking, as well as a well-proven vessel control and monitoring system, that along with Arksen Control, will underpin a new wave of marine automation.” He adds, “The impressive level of integration and redundancy possible with the Praxis Automation system, combined with their team’s approach to reliability and safety, fits perfectly with the core technical values of Arksen.”

Company synergies Arksen is a technology and adventure company designing marine exploration vessels. Together with the Praxis Automation project team, the company is already working closely on the systems engineering of the current Arksen 85, with hull one entering production in early 2020. “This exciting process, along with discussions

Facilitating a new breed of explorer to take to the water, Arksen is determined to make exploration more accessible and sustainable.”

Forefront of a revolution Sales Director at Praxis Automation Technology Benjamin Van Dam states his company is delighted with the partnership. “By combining the latest technologies in electrical energy storage systems powered hybrid propulsion, with state-of-the-art automation and navigation systems, we are working towards making Arksen vessels clean, smart, efficient and of course comfortable. We feel we are a part of bringing the vessels to the forefront of a revolution within the marine industry and create

a new approach to long distance offshore sailing in a sustainable way.” He continues, “We salute Jasper Smith and his team for materialising this project and selecting Praxis Automation as their technology partner for this challenging and visionary explorer yacht venture.” Mr Mair concludes, “Arksen is committed to producing the world’s most capable and technologically advanced explorer vessels, and this key partnership is another step in the journey to becoming the industry leader.” Arksen’s range of vessels start at 70ft, up to 140ft for special projects.

/Y LEL’s design showcases a traditional ‘sporty’ Italian exterior and an ultramodern interior that includes the latest entertainment features. The yacht’s aluminium superstructure can abide 500 GT. The generous size of the main common areas make M/Y LEL a one-of-a-kind in this segment of mega yachts. These dimensions also ensure a substantial competitive advantage.

The Rossinavi brand was founded in 2007 upon the legacy of expert welders Fratelli Rossi (Rossi Brothers). The brothers established a reputation for high-quality metal construction of fishing boat hulls from 1980 onwards. This expertise has allowed Rossinavi to maintain a level of quality that sees each ship entirely crafted inhouse at their shipyard in Viareggio, Italy.

Today, the shipyard enjoys a growing recognition. Rossinavi has launched several luxury yachts, ranging from 40-70 meters in length, and has several more in production. This recognition is not only due to Rossinavi’s rapid ascent in the superyacht segment, but also because of its position as the only family-owned-and-operated superyacht company in Italy.

FOCUS 0N ITALY un pied dans l’eau, where nature meets technology.” LUCA DINI Design & Architecture Studio specialises in tailormade yachts projects, transforming an owner’s dreams into reality. Mr Dini’s passion for luxury yacht design started in 1987 and over the last thirty years, he has left an unmistakable impression on the international yachting scene. In large part, Mr Dini’s achievements come from his hand-selected team and their daily commitment to the world of design. With decades of experience in the yachting industry, the team knows how to apply innovative and cutting-edge concepts to urban design, experiment with original urban design architecture solutions, and use unique materials with great attention to detail.

Spacious common areas M/Y LEL boasts a large beach club that allows for a dynamic and natural interaction with the surrounding environment. When the side and stern doors are lowered, interiors and exteriors organically merge into one vast and comfortable entertaining space. The club features an indoor bar area where the tender can also be accommodated. The beach club is an adjustable area of the yacht. The space also includes a garage that can be isolated and separately managed by closing the automatic door on the staircase leading to the main deck. Here, the cockpit provides a double usage, thanks to its raised panoramic area overlooking the second bar. This feature ensures maximum privacy without sacrificing entertainment space

when the staircase is closed off. The upper deck includes a tranquil dining area, which can be transformed into a private and protected environment with a removable veranda. This innovation includes outdoor heating lights and an air-conditioning system that allows for the boat to be enjoyed throughout the entire year (and in different weather conditions.) You will find the sun deck on the top of M/Y LEL. The deck is fitted with an infinity pool and dedicated bar station, and features various sunbathing and relaxing areas.

M/Y Kolaha PSY Marseille is carrying out a ten-year service on the 63.5m M/Y Kolaha. The vessel has a sophisticated exterior designed by Naval Architect Andrea Vallicelli, featuring a displacement steel hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks. Fitted with ‘zero speed stabilisers’, she is powered by two Caterpillar 2,364hp diesel engines and propelled by twin screw propellers to reach a top speed of 16 knots, and she can comfortably cruise at 14 knots. With 130,000l fuel tanks, she performs a maximum range of 3,109nm at 14 knots, and her water tanks can store around 35,000l of fresh water. Apart from the work associated with the class survey, a yard visit such as this is the ideal opportunity to conveniently tackle other required updates and improvements such as converting the two fore ballast tanks to store spare parts, adapting the two stern ones to hold extra fuel, and upgrading the electronic navigation system. In the meantime, the crew will be able to enjoy the yard’s living and recreational facilities and discover the best attractions in Marseille.

M/Y Titania PSY Marseille had the 73m MY Titania call on their expertise prior to the 2019-2020 Caribbean season. PSY is located in Marseille’s main harbour with 4 graving docks, capacities of up to 125m, and alongside mooring for up to 20m. Drawing on a skilled team led by Project Manager Lucas Delahaye, the work on Titania was executed with the same love of precision and attention to detail that go into the creation of newbuilds. The first of the two work phases lasted 10 days, which involved dry-docking the boat for works on the rudders, stabilisers, and hull. The second phase, entailing the complete reconstruction of the suspended ceiling in the dining room, lasted 18 days alongside the quay. During that time, the original framing was disassembled, replaced, and a complete new set of ceiling panels was installed, along with other works including metal, upholstery, piping, mechanical, and electrical, in addition to other interior carpentry. All works were finalised to the highest industry standards on time and within budget.

M/Y Commitment PSY Naples is working on the extensive refit of the 45m motor yacht Number Nine, previously named Commitment. The project aims to create a more modern vessel, whilst still taking her original De Vries Lentsch naval architecture and exterior design into consideration. Number Nine was originally built by the Italian yard Carp Navi in 1989. She has a length of 37m and features interior designs by London design studio Bannenberg & Rowell. Since entering the PSY Naples facility back in July 2019, Number Nine has had her stern enhanced by an additional 8m, bringing her current length to 45m. With her elongated stern, Number Nine has sufficient space for the installation of a beach club and jacuzzi. The width and length of her flybridge and light mast will also be extended and along with the engine room’s complete refurbishment, the shipyard will perform full re-installation of main engines, new generating sets, a new electrical system, and an air-conditioning system. In addition, the job list involves the complete renewal of pipework, propeller shaft line and rudders repositioning, tender lift, navigation systems, and the installation of new acoustic insulation.

M/Y Whispering Angel PSY Ancona is currently refitting the 36.45m M/YÂ Whispering Angel. After an extensive charter season cruising the Mediterranean, M/YÂ Whispering Angel has called at PSY Ancona for a full refit involving the following: running the periodic maintenance procedures required by manufacturer specifications for the main engines and generators, general ship system overhauling and upgrading, as well as touching up and refurbishing the interior. PSY Ancona will ensure that M/Y Whispering Angel is returned in tip-top condition to her owner for yet another truly memorable charter season.

T

he delivery of this second vessel in the E-volution Gallery is scheduled for spring 2021. The yacht features a Perini Navi concept and styling and Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design naval architecture, just like the first 42m E-volution. This second vessel is built from a combination of lightweight aluminium and carbon-fibre to deliver the performances requested by her regattaenthusiast owner. The sloop-rigged S/Y 42m E-volution GTS has a Panamax mast (62.5m), square top mainsail, and a 4m bowsprit. Her keel has a maximum draught of 7.4m. To further boost performance, the deckhouse and various other fit-out items have been made from carbon-fibre and the propulsion system has been optimised. This is a yacht crafted to maximise performance under sail, while guaranteeing stability and comfort on long passages. Designed in-house by Perini Navi’s Style & Design Director Franco Romani, this particular vessel pairs the E-volution series’ features, which include clean lines, generous spaces, and a large stern platform, with a sleeker and sportier deckhouse profile. The interior design will be created by GCA of Barcelona. “It is always a huge pleasure to see a new yacht”, comments Perini Navi Chairman & CEO Lamberto Tacoli. “This second S/Y 42m E-volution, which is also the first GTS version in the series, is the perfect symbiosis of comfort and performance, and we are receiving a very positive response to it. Thanks to the E-volution, Classic, and Falcon Rig galleries, we now finally

have a complete range of sailing yachts capable of meeting our clients’ different requirements.”

Sailing yachts and motor yachts Shipyard Perini Navi was founded in Viareggio, Italy, in 1983 when Fabio Perini launched a prototype sailing yacht with ample living space that could be sailed with a reduced crew. His vision grew into a successful fleet of large bluewater cruisers. He expanded his operations by acquiring a shipyard specialised in building luxury motor vessels, the Picchiotti shipyard in La Spezia, Italy. He also bought the Yildiz yard in Tuzla, Turkey. In 2017, Fabio Perini opened up the share capital of Perini Navi to a new investor. The entry of Fenix, the holding company of the Tabacchi family in Italy, paved the way for new developments on a strategic level. In order to grow the status and leadership of Perini Navi in both power and sailing superyacht segments, the group’s two brands were merged into one. The motor yachts, previously built under the Picchiotti name, are now sold, built, and sailed under the same Perini Navi logo as their sister sailing yachts. Perini Navi yachts are constructed at three facilities: in Viareggio and La Spezia in Italy, and in Tuzla, Istanbul in Turkey. These three state-ofthe-art facilities have become synonymous with quality and seaworthiness. These shipyards are able to provide the high level of service and maintenance expected from the Perini Navi brand. Last but not least, Perini Navi USA in

Newport, Rhode Island, is dedicated to brokerage and charter services for Perini Navi yachts, with the aim of providing a seamless contact point for clients. The yard’s production plans currently span the construction of seven yachts, five of which are sailing yachts and two motor yachts. Specifically: The S/Y 42m E-volution; The S/Y 42m E-volution GTS; The S/Y 42m E-volution on spec; The S/Y 47m E-volution; The S/Y 60m Classic; The M/Y 53m Voyager; And the M/Y 56m Voyager.

L

ady E is scheduled to leave the Pendennis yard with an additional 6m to her length overall by spring 2020. The owners’ team and Pendennis have worked hard to preserve the yacht’s original lines, sympathetically extending both the lower and main decks to create an additional 120m2 of guest space for her owners to enjoy. Post-refit, the popular charter yacht will boast a 60m2 beach club complete with bar, sun loungers, and guest seating area on the lower deck. Her main deck will see a reconfigured guest seating area complemented by the addition of a sun pad with an integrated skylight. Running alongside the major structural modifications is a programme of comprehensive engineering and AVIT (Audio Visual Information Technology) work. This will include new

generators, an exhaust system, shore power converter, and AVIT equipment throughout the vessel, as well as servicing and maintenance on all other equipment in the yacht’s engine room.

Charismatic Marala 59m M/Y Marala’s restoration project is well underway, too. The team at Pendennis will incorporate modern systems and technology aboard the yacht, whilst making sure that she retains her original 1930s character and pedigree. The yacht’s steelwork, domestic and electrical systems will be upgraded and harness modern engineering methods. Her interior will benefit from a completely new guest area. London-based design house Muza Lab has been commissioned to bring a new look to the décor that both respects and celebrates the 1930s spirit of the vessel. The yacht’s exterior will see a number of superstructure modifications that aim to restore her profile based more upon the original lines. She will also benefit from a complete paint programme and a combination of refurbishment and replacement to her teak decks.

most important employers, with over 430 highly skilled tradespeople based at the 67,000m2 prime waterfront location in Falmouth, UK. The yard’s modern facilities include three bespokebuilt construction halls (2x90m and 1x45m) alongside a 150m dry-dock, with the capacity for both newbuild and refit contracts for 30-100m superyachts. The 800t travel hoist enables efficient launching into the 7,564m2 non-tidal wet basin that is purpose-built to accommodate superyachts of up to 100m.

Cornwall and Barcelona

In the latter part of 2018, Pendennis secured a major share in Vilanova Grand Marina in Barcelona. This is a 48 berth facility, with adjacent land available for further development. The first phase of development work has been completed, and it is now a superyacht technical service centre that trades under the Pendennis Vilanova brand. Facilities presently include 12,000m2 of hard standing and a 620t travel hoist with supporting piers. Working in tandem with Vilanova Grand Marina is proving to be a successful partnership, with yachts benefiting from a secure and protected environment, along with having the option to tap into a multilingual technical support team as, and when, required.
