Carry on connecting IF EVER THERE WAS A TIME TO ‘KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON’, IT’S NOW. BOAT SHOWS MAY REMAIN CANCELLED, BUT ALTERNATIVES ARE EMERGING – CHECK OUT METSTRADE CONNECT ON PAGE 16, THE VIRTUAL EVENT THAT AIMS TO KEEP THE MARINE INDUSTRY CONNECTED. AND WHILE TRAVEL MAY STILL BE HINDERED, BOATS ARE STILL BEING BUILT. Two gleaming examples of superyacht builds are highlighted in our yacht reports this issue. Cantiere delle Marche drives forward into proven explorer territory on page 40 with Aurelia, its 40m Flexplorer. Combining explorer capabilities with a New York loft apartment aesthetic, the first Flexplorer yacht places flexibility and functionality at the heart of its offering. And on page 10 we learn how Baltic Yachts’ 43m custom-built Canova turns sailing into a work of art. Delivering enhanced comfort and speed, Canova is the first superyacht to be fitted with a transverse Dynamic Stability System foil. Our bumper naval architecture and design section contains four winning formulas for achieving eye-catching aesthetics. Packing large yacht appeal into a more compact size range, Columbus Yacht’s new 40 Crossover offers owners a whole lot of yacht for their buck (page 19). On page 22 we take a look at Damen Yachting’s Project Signature, the largest superyacht ever to be built in the Netherlands. Taking personalisation and space to a whole new level for dayboats, we discover how Invictus Yachts is carving out a niche with its flagship TT460 (page 44). And Sanlorenzo demonstrates its future lies in alternative and owner-led design by bringing three new models to the table this year (page 36). From large superyachts to tenders, we explore what the first hull built by Lanéva Boats has to offer on page 28. For those of you short on time, the answer is environmentally friendly materials and sleek design wrapped up in a sustainable and high-tech dayboat. And alongside new build activity, the refit and repair business is holding its own, too. Feadship gives superyacht W the royal refit treatment and, in the process, the promise of keeping its premium resale value (page 32). And on page 24, British yard Pendennis makes a show of strength in both the refit and new build sectors with two vessels in the latter half of 2020 – Lady E and Halekai. Thank you, as always for all of your support. And long may we all stay connected. Julia Zaltzman Editor

DELIVERING ENHANCED COMFORT AND SPEED, CANOVA IS THE FIRST SUPERYACHT TO BE FITTED WITH A TRANSVERSE DYNAMIC STABILITY SYSTEM FOIL. ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF BALTIC YACHTS.
T
o the untrained eye, Canova resembles any other aesthetically arresting performance sailing superyacht. Conceived to be an elegant bluewater cruising yacht, the latest custom-built delivery from Finnish shipyard Baltic Yachts possesses a svelte silhouette and an even slimmer carbon footprint. As stunning as her design is, however, it is the technological advances that separate her from the pack. The fast, easy-to-handle sailing yacht cuts emissions when sailing through her electric main engine propulsion and hydro-generation. And the foil-assisted yacht was designed to be able to remain independent of specialist shore-side assistance for long periods of time. But the real crux of this superyacht story is that this innovative long-distance cruising yacht is the first to be fitted with a transverse Dynamic Stability System (DSS) foil, designed to reduce heel angle, increase speed and dampen pitching to improve comfort.
Tested technology Canova’s experienced owner opted for the DSS foil primarily to provide a more comfortable experience for his guests and crew as they travel the world, and his bravery was rewarded when in late 2019, in winds in excess of 30 knots during her delivery from Finland to Italy, the Baltic 142’s foil dramatically reduced the amount of yaw and pitching in an awkward sea. The result? A yacht that is easier to handle and greater comfort for all on board. Baltic Yachts’ executive vice president Henry Hawkins, who was aboard Canova in Sardinia recently, says: “The boat has been sailing in 30 knots plus out of Porto Cervo and we are all delighted with her performance. With her twin rudders she is as light as a feather on the helm and she’s extraordinarily comfortable even at speeds in excess of 20 knots. “We are also very pleased indeed that there have been virtually no problems as the yacht has been put through her paces in testing conditions”, adds Hawkins. “It’s testament to the teams who planned, designed and built

Canova. I am extremely pleased with the result – she is a truly remarkable yacht.”
Collaborative design Canova is the result of a combined effort. Naval architecture is by New Zealand-based Farr Yacht Design. Exterior and interior design is by Lucio Micheletti, with engineering by Baltic Yachts. Rondal are responsible for the rig and sailplan options. Owner’s representative Mattia Belleri of Fluid Sailing project managed the design and build, and now stays with the yacht as captain. In addition to her DSS foil-assistance, the yacht is equipped with electric propulsion via a Saildrive Propulsion System, which reduces both vibration and noise levels. Electric captive winches generate power on backwind. When cruising at 15 knots, Canova can generate 10 hours silent mode with all hotel requirements. For backup, there is Baltic’s super-quiet custom generators.
Experience counts Canova’s experienced owner, whose input into the yacht’s design and build has been considerable from the outset, has been sailing intensively since the easing of Covid-19 travel restrictions. He’s had the opportunity to use the yacht’s DSS foil to good effect and with the 9m sliding appendage extended to leeward, pitching motion is dramatically reduced and the reduction in heel angle has far exceeded expectations, improving all-round comfort. According to Hawkins, Canova’s owner has been particularly impressed with the behaviour of the yacht in fresh conditions when reefing. “With the main de-powered as the reef is put in there’s always the danger of the boom being a problem with everything bouncing about, but with the foil deployed there’s extra stability and much less motion, which is a terrific safety factor in these conditions”, he explained. The owner and crew have also been getting used to the powerful sailplan. A square top mainsail is set on a carbon spar which can be

adjusted by two sets of deflectors, or running check-stays, and masthead backstays. At full hoist, all three have to be eased and then re-set, to allow the square top main to move across during a tack or gybe, but with one reef in, only the lower deflectors have to be eased. With two reefs in, the mainsail headboard is below the lower deflector allowing the yacht to be tacked or gybed with no need to attend to deflectors or backstays.
Looking ahead With the summer season in the Mediterranean now ended, Canova’s owner is planning the next stage of a global adventure which will entail either a transatlantic crossing this winter or a passage to the south Atlantic. The yacht’s extended hardtop bimini with touch button sliding side windows for full protection will make either option considerably more enjoyable. Generous storage, including under-deck drum stowage for automatic code sail stowage and in-boom mainsail stowage with fixed point slab reefing, will also assist the crew. Stowed beneath the foredeck is a custom-built 7m, 45kt, 220hp HTM tender with built-in re-fuelling tanks for remote bunkering, meaning trips ashore or exploring bays will be equally as pleasurable.
Interior design The Lucio Micheletti-styled accommodation leaves no stone unturned. The focal point of the interior lies with the single level saloon and guest cockpit. The unusually large and protected area serves as the yacht’s hub. Protected by the hardtop bimini in winter, come summer the saloon windows benefit from automatic tinting. This not only keeps the heat out but reduced the need for air conditioning. The master suite, located amidships on the lower deck, takes advantage of the extra

available space that results from having an electric propulsion system, which are typically smaller than conventional engines. A sprawling 65m2 suite enjoys a gimballed double bed, a carbon bath tub/sauna and hidden treadmill, a lounge area to port, a bathroom with his-andher sinks, plus a carbon fibre bath tub. A separate full-length walk-in wardrobe and an additional head, shower and wash basin are located to port.
Canova is the culmination of an impressive package of new technology. True to her name, she is a sculptural work of art that cements Baltic’s position as a world leader in supersailing yachts.

T
his year would have been the 32nd year that Metstrade – the marine equipment trade show – was scheduled to take place in November. Usually located at RAI Amsterdam, it is the world’s largest trade exhibition for equipment, materials and systems for the international leisure marine industry. But like most other boat shows and events around the world in 2020, the organisers announced its cancellation earlier this year. All is not lost, however, for quick on the heels of the cancellation came the news of ‘Metstrade Connect’, a virtual event for the entire marine industry. Each year, RAI Amsterdam provides a vibrant and considerably large venue in which to host the dynamic industry get together. Even in the wake of Covid-19, it had made necessary adaptations and put systems in place in order to host METS in a safe, efficient and Covid-secure manner. But, in light of the continued travel restrictions, quarantine requirements and general uncertainty, the show organisers felt unable to “guarantee the high-quality show in 2020 with valuable face-to-face contacts with visitors which is expected from Metstrade”. Niels Klarenbeek, Director of Maritime at Metstrade, comments: “We have worked towards a safe and successful Metstrade with great dedication. The cancellation of the 2020 show has been a tough blow for my team and I, but listening to the multiple voices in the industry including the Exhibition Committee, ICOMIA, partners and the stakeholders this is the only right decision we could make. Our team is working together with our partners on different virtual ways to connect the leisure marine industry in these tough times.”
METSTRADE Connect METSTRADE Connect is a virtual event scheduled to take place on 10 December 2020. Developed in partnership with ICOMIA, IBI and

Superyacht Report, it promises to “provide attendants with a valuable content driven programme with a focus on innovation and sustainability within the industry”. Few details have been provided as yet about the virtual event, but the aim is to discuss the state of the industry and share experiences and challenges that businesses have faced this year during the Covid-19 pandemic. It will also host multiple ‘TechTalks’ regarding different parts of the industry, offering valuable insights and inspiration.
DAME Design Award This year is also the 30th anniversary of the DAME Design Award, which is judged by a panel of leading boat, interior and industrial designers, as well as user experts. The idea is to highlight product design innovation in front of a global marine audience. Appointed to the Chair this year is renowned naval architect, designer and yacht racer, Andre Hoek. While it won’t be possible to present the award in front of a live audience this year, the organisers felt that “there is evidence that research and development efforts have continued through the challenges of the pandemic”, and so the decision was made to continue with the coveted accolade regardless. The objective is to maintain the format in line with recent years, to highlight the very best design aspects of new products across the world. Those that go on to achieve DAME Category and Overall Winner awards are acknowledged as having reached the top standard of design practice for marine equipment in their field. Nick Bice, Commercial Director of last year’s DAME Winner, U SAFE, commented: “To receive the overall DAME Award after admiring all the products that had received accolades in past years was extremely exciting. exhibitors who have kept their R&D efforts rolling through Covid lockdown or used design in innovative ways to address challenges,” says director of Metstrade Niels Klarenbeek. “For that reason we are introducing this special DAME R&D Excellence in Adversity Award for 2020 only.” The eligibility for this award is any product new to market, or any significant R&D project conducted by an equipment manufacturer worked on between 1 January - 28 October 2020 that has been progressed, despite the constraints of Covid-19. The Jury will also take into account design-led initiatives that have improved the safety of the business concerned or the community in which it is based. The scope for entry is wide-ranging, covering all sizes of company and types of activity. The Jury will use analytical assessment as well as emotional response to find the winner and also name any commended entries. Entries to this special award will also be eligible for consideration in the DAME 2021 30th Anniversary Awards.

hoever said big is best clearly hasn’t encountered a yacht like the Columbus 40 Crossover. As the third size range in the successful Crossover series, it will also be the Italian yard’s smallest. Much like its larger 50m and 56m sister options, the 40 Crossover gets its design from naval architect Sergio Cutolo of creative design firm Hydro Tec. According to Columbus, which forms part of the Palumbo Superyachts group, the 40 Crossover was born from the need for compact yachts to

accommodate tenders of a size comparable to those of much larger yachts, while not compromising on the yachting lifestyle that owners are accustomed to. With this in mind, it’s unsurprising to learn that the 40 Crossover can accommodate tenders up to 8m in length and 2.5 tons in weight on deck, as well as a host of yachting toys. And the space left by the tender (which is usually towed) remains completely free thanks to a retractable crane installed in the aft area of the upper deck.
Maximising design The external lines drawn by Cutolo are characterised by modern shapes, with a

prevalence of “tense and angled surfaces” and a concentration of volumes in the forward area. These traits are typical of the Crossover series, but in the case of the 40 Crossover, they have been further accentuated to make room for the tender. The displacement hull with bulbous bow and flat, flared aft sections is made from steel with a light alloy superstructure. The stern area of the hull houses a lazarette that can be configured for the owner’s equipment. A swimming pool aft benefits from an automatic sliding cover. Paired with a generous bathing platform, the stern area becomes the ideal place to drink in the views and relax. The bulwarks fold completely flat creating a large platform-
cum-beach club area. For further al fresco options, the sun deck offers more sunbathing areas and seating. The central section with bar is sheltered by a hardtop characterised by a quirky crow’s nest feature.
Comfort at sea Indoors, the deck saloon and sky lounge form the two main socialising areas. Adequate for casual socialising as well as dining, a more formal set up can be found in the dedicated dining room located on the upper deck. Stretching full beam, the dining area opens to the side, creating a cantilevered loggia over the ocean. The owner’s suite occupies the traditional

A tank deck tunnel connects the engine room to the crew area, as well as allowing the passage of the main lines of the plants and the inspection of the equipment and fuel tanks. Power comes from two Caterpillar C32 delivering 970kW each which gives a maximum speed of 14.5 knots, and a range of over 4,000nm at cruising speed. The yacht is fully equipped for maximum comfort with both zero speed and underway stabilisation.

PROJECT SIGNATURE, THE LARGEST SUPERYACHT EVER TO BE BUILT IN THE NETHERLANDS. ALL IMAGES PHOTO COURTESY OF DAMEN YACHTING.
T
he Dutch shipyards are known for their precision and quality. For building wellengineered, technologically advanced yachts that tick the boxes on performance, design and capability. But now Amels and Damen Yachting will add size to that list of achievements. Stretching at 120m in length, Project Signature will be the largest yacht ever to be built in the Netherlands catapulting Dutch shipyards into the 100m+ big leagues. Currently holding the title for the largest yacht to come out of the Netherlands is the mighty Jubilee, built by Oceanco in 2017. And in February 2020, Feadship announced its latest project Moonrise would be the largest yacht by waterline. But Project Signature is set to eclipse them both. Designed by Espen Øino, a designer known for his penmanship of large vessels, and with Imperial acting as owner’s representative and build supervisor throughout construction, delivery is scheduled for 2025. “We are very enthusiastic to be a part of this exciting project, the largest Amels ever built”, says Øino. “Collaborating with the great teams from Imperial and Amels has strengthened our existing thriving relationships. Our team has worked tirelessly to create a yacht with a unique layout and a timeless external appearance blending edgy design with elegant curves. We very much look forward to seeing this impressive yacht come to life during the build process.”
Size matters Both the largest vessel ever built by Damen Yachting, as well as the largest yacht in the whole of the Netherlands, Project Signature is being touted as a ‘green’ superyacht, with an ecological focus on its onboard technology in line with the standard Lloyds Register of Shipping EP (Environment Protection) notation. Diesel-electric engines and Azipod propulsion will provide low noise and vibration levels.

Little else has been released about the design or configuration of the yacht as yet, but the confirmation of such a significant signing, particularly during the uncertain times brought about by Covid-19, can only send a positive message to the rest of the yachting industry. “We are extremely honoured to be selected for this major 120m superyacht project”, says Rose Damen, Managing Director of Amels and Damen Yachting. “This superyacht adds to our strong relationships with both Imperial and Espen Øino International. We have an excellent team on this project, including designers and engineers at our yard, as well as our production department. And of course, the amazing pool of talented suppliers and subcontractors on our doorstep. Everyone involved is very excited and looks forward to delivering the very best vessel for the owner.” Julia Stewart, Director at Imperial, adds: “This day is a special one for Imperial: we confirm our leadership in the 100m+ superyachts new construction range while proving our important knowledge helps to raise the level of our demanding and changing industry. Partnering with Amels and Damen Yachting makes sense for this project: they have a reputation for excellence that nobody can deny, and we value their high standards and results to deliver on record time. Collaborating with Espen Øino and his team is also a proof of excellence: their expertise as well as their experience alongside Imperial will give real value when it comes to serious matters. With this dream team at the helm, Project Signature will be one the most striking, silent and advanced superyachts ever delivered, and we look forward to commencing build.”

Built by design BRITISH YARD PENDENNIS MAKES A SHOW OF STRENGTH IN BOTH THE REFIT AND NEW BUILD SECTORS WITH THE LAUNCH OF TWO VESSELS IN THE LATTER HALF OF 2020. ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF PENDENNIS.
B
ritish shipyard Pendennis is a world leader in the realm of custom builds and refit. The 14-acre prime waterfront location in Falmouth, UK, has the capacity for both new build and refit contracts for 30-100m superyachts, but it is the newly extended 74.5m Lady E that has had tongues wagging of late. Following a major refit, the Amels-built yacht, first launched in 2006 and a successful charter vessel, now enjoys several new features, including the addition of a 6m stern extension.
Emerging from the Pendennis dry dock in September 2020, Lady E was then moved to the Cornwall-based shipyard’s 7,564m2 wet basin for final commissioning work ahead of a series of sea trials. The refit transformed several key areas on the yacht, with the aim of bringing the owner’s vision for an improved guest experience to life.
Building space A major component of the yacht’s refit has been the addition of a 6m stern extension, which provides an extra 120m2 of guest space across the lower and main decks. Guests can now enjoy a new 66m2 beach club on the lower deck and additional guest seating and sunbathing areas on the main deck aft. The space features a large comfortable seating area complete with a 77” plasma TV, as well as a fully equipped bar and wall mounted storage for a wide range of surf and foil boards. A new enlarged transom door leads out on to a full beam swim platform with actuated swim stairs leading guests straight into the water. The 6m extension has also increased the main deck aft living space, introducing a seating area and separate large sunpad. An integrated skylight now looks through to the beach club below. Guests will also benefit from new RGB lighting over the dining table and a high spec

audio system. Facilities on the bridge deck have also been updated. Previously the upper crew galley and pantry, the exclusive living-designed space now contains a fully equipped health and wellbeing suite. This provides access to a range of massage and beauty treatments, with a separate station for hair and makeup. The yacht’s existing sauna/steam room has also been upgraded to include a new, larger hammam sauna and spa area.
Technical advances As well as the visible external and internal improvements, a comprehensive programme of engineering and AV/IT works was completed by Pendennis’ technical experts alongside a team from VBH. This included the installation of three new Scania DI13 generators complete with an SCR system to comply with IMO Tier-III regulations. The three new generators and SCR systems sit within bespoke custom frames designed to fit within the available space and support the equipment. Both main engines have been overhauled and service work has been completed on all major engineering systems both within the engine room and external to the yacht. Additionally, HUG DPF systems have also been installed to further reduce particulate emissions. The overhaul of the main engines and service work carried out on all major systems, including the chiller plant, gearbox, shafts, rudders and stabilisers. Finally, Lady E’s sleek new profile benefits from the application of top coat on her exterior bulwarks and high UV areas with Pendennis working in partnership with Pinmar to complete her transformation. At the time of going to print, Lady E was preparing to depart Falmouth ahead of her upcoming charter season.

Halekai, a Hoek Truly Classic 128’ sailing yacht, entered the shipyard’s wet basin for rig stepping and commissioning prior to sea trials in August 2020.
New build Pendennis benefits from an 800-tonne travel hoist, which enables efficient launching into its 7,564m2 non-tidal wet basin purpose-built to accommodate superyachts of up to 100m. Exemplifying its capabilities is the 2020 launch of Halekai, a Hoek Truly Classic 128’ sailing yacht. The sloop entered the shipyard’s wet basin for rig stepping and commissioning prior to sea trials in August 2020. Exterior and interior designed by worldrenowned Hoek Design Naval Architects and with MCM as Owners’ Representative, Halekai is the fourth hull in the TC128 series. These yachts are known for their distinctive classic hull shape and above-water styling combined with a modern underwater configuration. Halekai has enjoyed the same experienced build team associated with the award-winning 2018 delivery Vijonara. Interior styling for Halekai has been curated by Ken Fulk Inc. of New York, inspired by the unique history and culture of Hawaii. The experienced owners plan to sail her around the world in a fitting nod to the yacht’s name, meaning ‘home on the sea’.

lectric boat specialist Lanéva Boats has launched the first hull of its 100% electric eco-friendly day boats. The design was first unveiled in April 2019 in Monaco when the prototype was inaugurated by H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, and in July this year, the first fully constructed model hit the water. The Lanéva startup, made up of four professionals from the maritime and yachting world, has been supported by Monacotech since its inception. The Lanéva boat has been designed as an eco-friendly product from
conception to dismantling. It is the DNA of the brand that is found in all the elements of the boat including the frame made from composites using biosourced balsa wood and volcanic fibre, the natural linen fibre deck, the natural cork floor and the 100% recyclable leatherette chandlery. “We have designed a high-tech boat that surprises with its performance and sustainable approach while precisely matching the expectations of our customers, both in b2b and in b2c applications”, says François Richard, Lanéva Chief Exploration Officer.

Fingerprint technology The Lanéva boat merges advanced technology with traditional shipbuilding techniques. It is equipped with a 140kWh battery pack (whose cells are reported to have been designed for military operations), while its two axial flow and 95% energy efficient motors have been proven in the aviation sector. The complete integration of the propulsion chain and the technological hinge of the boat is ensured by what the company describes as an “intelligent connectivity system”. “We have developed a tailor-made interface for the management, monitoring and maintenance of the boat, based on CZone technology and the NMEA 2000 network via our Raymarine screen and an iPad”, says Thierry Hoeltgen, Lanéva’s Chief Innovation Officer.

The result is a highly efficient, tech-enhanced dayboat crafted with durable materials and offering owners “fuel-free rides” and low operational costs. The boats are said to be inspired by historic runabout designs that have the ability to integrate state-of-the-art technologies. The central cockpit combines navigation displays with CZone interface. The dashboard puts boat controls at the owner’s fingertips, with safety and comfort at the fore. And the throttle allows two modes of navigation, security and sport. The system integration forms a critical element of the boat design. Featuring a digital control and monitoring network that replaces switch and fuse panels with state-of-the-art and robust interfaces, the boat’s multiple circuits can be fingertip controlled with a waterproof keypad and light NMEA 2000 network cable. This means the entire system can be remotely monitored and controlled.

FEADSHIP GIVES SUPERYACHT W THE ROYAL REFIT TREATMENT AND, IN THE PROCESS, THE PROMISE OF KEEPING ITS PREMIUM RESALE VALUE. ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF FEADSHIP.
A
t the 2018 Monaco Yacht Show, Dutch superyacht builder Feadship launched its ‘My Feadship’ programme, an initiative aimed at highlighting the benefits of taking a custom-built yacht back to its home yard for refit work and maintenance. Fast forward two years, and the proof is in the pudding as 57.6m superyacht W (ex Larisa) emerged from the Netherlands builder’s shed gleaming from a significant 2020 refit. Originally launched by Feadship in 2013, W, now sporting a freshly painted metallic silver hull, successfully completed post-refit sea trials in July this year and was promptly handed back to her owner. But the livery and anti-fouling work only scratches the surface of what has been undertaken during the ten-month refit, and all personalised around the owner’s specific requirements. “After buying W in 2019, I set out to not only refit my newly acquired Feadship to my specific requirements but to also renew her in every possible respect while ensuring that she remained 100% a Feadship”, explains the owner. “Owning a Feadship gives one an enormous sense of pride and I am convinced that the only way to retain full Feadship pedigree is to access the formidable talents and capabilities of the entire Feadship organisation. It was wonderful to be able to bring her back to

The refit works undertaken are extensive and varied, spanning technology upgrades that include bridge electronics; navigation and AV/IT systems; full LED lighting throughout; the alarm monitoring and control system; a FLIR gyrostabilised camera on the foremast; and video surveillance systems. At the owner’s request, all major systems have been dialled back to ‘zero’ time. The wheelhouse has been given a comprehensive upgrade with all-new screens and the yacht’s stabilisation system has been fitted with an adaptive stabiliser control. The sewage treatment has been upgraded to conform with the latest standards, and the yacht’s flag changed to USA, with strict adherence to United States Coast Guard requirements and regulations. Both MTU main engines have also been completely overhauled. More significant changes include the addition of two guest cabins, taking the total from four to six, and the total number of guests to 12, serviced by a crew of 26. The former VIP stateroom on the lower deck has been converted into two equal-sized guest suites to port and starboard, and a double Murphy’s bed installed in the bridge deck lounge. The adjacent powder room is now a dedicated marble-clad bathroom for when the lounge is occupied as a guest suite.

REFIT & REPAIR additions made by the owner alongside Fort Lauderdale-based A La Mer, Inc. A larger jacuzzi has been retrofitted on the sun deck and the layout of the main deck lounge amended to be more open plan. Provisions for plenty more water toys for guests to enjoy have been made, and the sun deck now benefits from redesigned sunshades, new furniture and a larger, expandable outdoor dining table for al fresco meals. For added convenience, the bow tender gasoline storage area is now approved by Lloyd’s Register and flag state, and new boilers guarantee guests will have a continuous supply of hot water.
Strategic refit This refit took place across two different Feadship yards, initially started in Aalsmeer with the dry-docking phase taking place in Makkum. This proved particularly tricky during the Covid-19 outbreak but highlights the flexible prowess of a yard well versed in sharing resources. “An additional challenge was the need to have travel restrictions lifted before key crew members could rejoin the vessel”, explains Feadship project manager Hans van der Wiel. “The owner was very impressed with how these unprecedented issues were handled, especially
because much of the refit had to proceed with only ‘remote’ consultations with his team.” The owner’s motivation for sending W from the Mediterranean to the Netherlands for the project was based on Feadship’s reputation for keeping to agreements, says van der Wiel, a decision that the yard has now fully validated. But the
promise of retaining a Feadship guarantee on his yacht was another attractive element. Following the home yard refit, W now has a Feadship Authenticity Certificate, meaning the yacht’s premium resale value is maintained.

BRINGING THREE NEW MODELS TO THE TABLE THIS YEAR, SANLORENZO DEMONSTRATES ITS FUTURE LIES IN ALTERNATIVE AND OWNER-LED DESIGN. ALL IMAGES COURTESY OF SANLORENZO.
Sanlorenzo is a yard that is prolific in its output and shows no signs of slowing down. Launching no less than three new models in 2020, the Italian builder has demonstrated that its areas of expertise are wide-reaching and varied. Collaborating with a raft of interior designers, and with an active focus on “liveability”, the new models aim to meet the requirements of demanding owners while introducing something different to the market. Making its international debut at the Genoa Boat Show this year, the SX112 crossover is pitched as the new flagship in the SX crossover line. With interior design by Italian firm Piero Lissoni, and exterior lines hailing from Studio Zuccon International Project, the 34m offers a mixture of classic flybridge motor yacht and explorer vessel. Taking its leave from the former Crossover models, the SX112 continues the theme of flexible living at sea. Barriers between

indoors and out are eliminated, creating a harmonious connection with the great outdoors.
Striking design Bernardo Zuccon of Studio Zuccon International Project has focused the design on a “family feeling”, which primarily takes shape in the stern area. In a refinement and evolution of the classic SX88 design, the new model offers a spacious 90m2 beach area, with folding terraces for flexible expansion. An interior dedicated fitness area is directly linked by large sliding glass doors that maximise the indoor-outdoor relationship. “On the SX112 there is more ‘oxygen’ available with which to develop the stylistic message, in a logic of signs where harmony and balance of the volumes are the result of languages related to the principles of organic architecture”, says Zuccon. “The forms are fluid, almost a reminder

of the large marine mammals found in nature. This is a product for those who truly love the sea, which combines an innovative crossover type of living space with traditional layout balances, including the ‘must have’ features the market demands today, even on vessels of more compact size.”
Lissoni has continued the feel of connectivity on the SX112, particularly in key areas such as the open plan main deck.
For the interior, Lissoni has continued the feel of connectivity, particularly in key areas such as the open plan main deck. Extending as a single, continuous space from stern to bow with a living area adjacent to a bar zone that flows directly into a dining area, the main deck offers a seamless indoor-outdoor arrangement. Large windows face out to sea, and the subdivision of internal spaces creates multiple zones for guests to enjoy. “The SX112 is another experimental model, like every new one we work on with Sanlorenzo”,

says Lissoni. “In this case, we have relied on an ever more architectural approach: it is a floating building. We have connected the spaces exactly as in a building, through very technological openings that create an indoor-outdoor relationship. So we have truly designed a floating villa.”

“surprising spaces for the owner” as well as guests. One key area of interest on this project is the owner’s cabin, which has been designed as private apartment rather than a room. Stretching 147m2, it spans an unprecedented three levels, with interlinking indoor and outdoor areas. A living area is found on the mezzanine level, while on the upper deck there is a private indoor studio and a large open area at the bow with a sundeck, a hydromassage tub and lounge areas. A terrace over the sea offers complete privacy.
“The 44Alloy is a special boat. The external lines fully reflect the DNA of Sanlorenzo, replicating its features and styles while translating them into a new, almost experimental language, channelled into a typological organization that is simply different from all others”, says Bernard Zuccon of Studio Zuccon International Project, which undertook both interior and exterior design. “The internal spaces, in fact, are the result of an extensive alteration of the traditional layout. The objective is clear: to offer the yachtsman the possibility of living on board in a new way, in unexpected spaces that change and diversify their functions, and in new potential interpretations.” The concept behind the 44Alloy is to have dedicated areas. Four double guest cabins are located on the lower deck. The 83m2 sundeck features outdoor dining, sunbathing and relaxation. The large beach club contains 55m2 of sheltered space including a fitness area and an outdoor space that opens on three sides, thanks to the folding sides and transom, creating a platform on the sea.

The key areas comprise a vast owner’s suite, a large main living area and a generous beach club on the lower deck.
Strength in steel The third yacht in Sanlorenzo’s trio of new models is the 62Steel. At 61.5m the 1,200GT five-deck steel yacht has volume and space at the heart of its offering. Once again, the key areas comprise a vast owner’s suite (with two spacious bathrooms, a walk-in wardrobe and private deck forward), a large main living area and a generous beach club on the lower deck. Providing panoramic views towards the bow and the sides thanks to large full-height windows, the owner’s private terrace also features a counter-current swimming pool for exercise, large sunbathing and relaxation areas and open-air dining. A 67m2 private sky lounge towards the stern is the ultimate space for owners to have as an inner sanctuary. The main deck aft benefits from a sliding roof to transform the area into a second sundeck. The main deck also contains six cabins, five guest units and a massage room, two with king-size beds and three double cabins with twin beds. Lower deck aft resides the beach club, with a 92m2 covered area including relaxation areas, a bar, a fitness zone and a steam bath, and folding terraces at the stern and on two sides, offering magnificent access for swimming, diving or sunbathing by the water’s edge. Interior design was undertaken by Francesco Paszkowski, who comments: “Our interaction with the shipyard, with which we have collaborated for some time, and our

designed by our studio. To work with professionals on such a high level, with an important shipyard and an expert client, has been a very gratifying experience.”

ombining explorer capabilities with a New York loft apartment aesthetic, explorer yacht Aurelia from Cantiere delle Marche (CdM) appeals to all senses. True to its name, the first Flexplorer yacht places flexibility and functionality at the heart of its offering, strengthening the Italian shipyard’s reputation for building expedition vessels with a difference. “The first Flexplorer will be a game changer, there is no doubt about it. It is actually already a trendsetter project if we look at many of the latest renderings published by other yards on the press after we presented the project. This makes us very proud, indeed”, says Vasco Buonpensiere, co-founder

and sales & marketing director at CdM. “Being the first interpreters of a new trend and being those who lead the pack, launching this kind of yacht years before our competitors... well, it is just priceless and a perfect reward for all the efforts we made to create the Flexplorer range of vessels!”
Technical advances CdM has long had a stake in the explorer vessel market, but it believes the Flexplorer represents a “turning point” for the company. Embracing brave exterior design by Sergio Cutolo of Hydro Tec and memorable interiors by Francesco Paszkowski Design, the yacht attempts to meet owners’ demands for robust, seaworthy, allweather exploration in comfort, safety and style. At just under 40m with an 8m-long beam and 392GT, Aurelia is defined by an eye-catching superstructure and a deep, flared hull. Thanks to the hull’s large volume, easily accessible storage compartments and freezers are located below the crew area by way of a gallery/tank

deck that connects the engine room to the crew area. An almost vertical, bulbous bow and large aft deck position her as a go-anywhere yacht with transatlantic capabilities ideal for adventurous relaxation. Collapsible bulwarks fold down to give an additional 7m on each side, creating a vast beach area that stretches out to a combined 115m2 and delivers a true on-thewater experience. “The transverse frame, in line with the shipyard approach, allows for better spaces optimization, increasing the internal volume thanks to reduced internal structures”, says naval architect Sergio Cutolo. “It also provides additional design flexibility, allowing for easier modifications/ customisation. She [Aurelia] has two pairs of electro-driven stabilizing fins. This solution grants better functionality also because, thanks to a sophisticated software, they work together with the two independent electro-driven rudders to improve the seakeeping. This allowed the installation of smaller machines and blades, minimizing the ‘rudder effect’ caused by larger fins while offering redundancy in case of blade failure.”
Owner requirements Much of Aurelia’s design responds to the detailed owner’s brief. Opting for just three guest cabins – two VIP cabins and a twin on the lower deck – allows even more room for the dominant owner’s suite on the main deck forward. A maximum of nine guests are accommodated, serviced by a crew of six. The owner intends on using the yacht for nonstop passages to remote destinations. With that in mind, much attention was given to the size and design of the toy storage to allow for long periods onboard with all the desired equipment. This includes drainable storage space with a boards rack which electro hydraulically pops up on the deck, different slots for a carbon fibre removable 500kg crane, and a large lazarette. The owner’s requests also included a proper gym with plenty of natural light. This was achieved by including six skylights that flood the fully equipped, large and airy gym with an abundance of sun rays. Even more impressive is the immense wine cellar – a design feat that occupies the entire stairwell between the main

and upper deck – and gives the yacht a true point of difference. Not to mention, is a masterful use of space.
Interior design An asymmetrical layout on the Main deck opens up sprawling views through large side windows. Designed by Francesco Paszkowski in collaboration with Margherita Casprini, the interior design features an assortment of materials, including brushed oak floors, slate, concrete, iron, glass, metal and aluminium finishes. Colours range from brown to charcoal grey for soft furnishings, while sofas and chairs are given a vintage leather look and feel. Paszkowski describes the design of the interior as being “a challenging job”, with its cohesive design language required to unite a number of different ambiences. Speaking about the décor, the owner comments: “I like objects and furniture which bring with them that beautiful patina, which shows a past history and life of the objects. I actually do not like houses and boats furnished with what is normally showed on design magazines everywhere in the world: it is like fashion, it is market driven and it doesn’t say much about the owner.” Twin Caterpillar C32 A Rating engines deliver 746kW each, enabling her to reach a top speed of 14 knots and to possess a range of above 5,000nm when cruising at 10 knots. And a large powerful A-frame crane located in the aft deck’s flooring means launching the yacht’s 8.5m tender is quick, easy and doesn’t interfere with the guest experience.

talian shipyard Invictus is appreciated far and wide for its sleek lines and nippy hulls, but its new flagship – the TT460 – marks the expansion of its entire offering. Pushing deeper into fully fledged day boat territory, the onboard space and choice of materials is a step up for the growing Borgia-located yard.
Yachts designer. “This yacht was born from the wish to give a shape to the energy and emotions of a day on board, when time seems to stop, and you feel you could be as one with sun and waves. All this can be done without sacrificing style and that truly Italian elegance that adds value to any experience.”
At 14.27m, the TT460 was unveiled this summer. The taut, essential lines are typical of Invictus hulls, in which style and attention to performance are combined. Equipped with two Volvo Penta IPS 650 engines, it promises to be rapid, too.
Hidden gems
“The sea is not just a holiday destination or an enchanting background for a photograph – it is a way of life”, says Christian Grande, Invictus

Invictus.indd 44
The defining element of the TT460 design is the elegant style of the windscreen, from the bow to amidships. Merging seamlessly with the carbon hardtop it further enhances the generous space found on board this compact boat. The main deck benefits from a comfortable walkaround for the length of the boat and hosts a wide sunpad forward. Ideal for lounging and drinking in views, it comes equipped with a flush, retractable seat.
The “dinette” is centrally located, with room enough for guests to dine in comfortably thanks to a small alcove area. This is created by option of folding back the tables, and effectively creating a second sun deck. Shaded from the sun by a hard top, it offers protection from all weather. On the sides, the bulwarks come equipped with the option of two folding platforms. This further increases the already considerable onboard space for a 14m.

experience, in which the boat is designed with individual material inserts and equipment. The lower deck provides even more versatility and the opportunity to personalise the interior with several layout configurations available. These range from an open-space solution with a transformable double bed in the stern and a lounge area in the bow to the inclusion of partitions to divide areas and increase privacy. Teak wood can be laid on both the stern swim platform and the entire deck area. A hydraulic moving device can be added to help swimmers climb back aboard and to help crew to manage the tender – another unusual feature on a yacht of this size. With the TT460, Invictus Yachts has given owners plenty of opportunities to realise their dayboat goals with this fully customisable, Italian-designed flagship.
