NEWS IN BRIEF DAMEN YACHTING

Amels 200 Stella M Delivered

BOOTH NO.

JS6

MYS 2021

The team at Amels and Damen Yachting is pleased to announce the delivery of the Amels 200 Stella M. She is the first yacht to be delivered from the Amels 200 Limited Editions design and departed from the Damen Yachting Vlissingen City shipyard in the Netherlands for a busy summer season cruising the complete Mediterranean. Her delivery comes just a year and half after her sale was announced at the end of 2019 and in just a matter of months since her launch earlier this year. Stella M features custom interiors by Reymond Langton. Her 60m Limited Editions design is an evolution of the Amels 188 designed by Tim Heywood. Like her predecessor, the high volume (1,015GT) Amels 200 features hybrid electrical power technology, a four-deck elevator and air-conditioned gym on Sun Deck. Her additional length, however, has allowed for a number of enhancements such as larger aft decks and Swim Platform and full-height windows in the Owners Suite.

BOOTH NO.

QE28 MYS 2021

In june of this year, Benetti proudly announced the launch of M/Y Zazou, a 65m full custom yacht with sleek and sinuous lines. The steel hull was painted at the request of the owner, a repeat Benetti customer, in an elegant carinthia blue color and the superstructure is made of aluminium. The external lines are by Giorgio M. Cassetta, and the interiors, as well as some of the external spaces, are by the Dutch studio Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design. The yacht, which accommodates twelve people in six double cabins, has one of the largest Sun Decks in its category, with a gym, a 5m long swimming pool and an outdoor cinema on top of another cinema area on the Main Deck. Two Caterpillar 3512C engines allow the yacht to navigate autonomously for 5,000nm at a cruising speed of 15 knots.

New Bering yacht sale and new Monaco office Bering Yachts has signed a new contract for a one-off, 23m explorer yacht with a European client who has plans to cruise the world. “The client wanted a tough, go-anywhere explorer yacht with oceanic range, which is what Bering does best”, says Yard Founder and President Alexei Mikhailov. “But he also wants to be able to run the boat silently for extended periods on battery power alone, so the B76 will be equipped with a powerful battery bank that can be recharged by alternators and solar panels.” To deal with growing enquiries from Europe, Bering has also opened a new office in Monaco. The operation will be headed up by Bogdan Gusarev. “The explorer market is booming and Bering’s rugged, steel-hulled platforms are gaining traction in Europe”, says Mr Gusarev. In 2021 Bering opened three offices around the world, including Bering Moscow, Bering Fort Lauderdale and Bering Monaco.

NEWS IN BRIEF Dutch built luxury Contest 59CS features handmade Bentley interior Contest Yachts has collaborated with Bentley Motors on the creation of a truly unique yacht interior for the shipyard’s latest launched Contest 59CS further to an idea from famed Russian musician and director Garik Sukachev, matching the exquisite cabin design of the Continental GT V8 Coupe. As a creative person, Mr Sukachev brings uniqueness to everything he touches, and the idea here was to combine the fine work of the two outstanding yacht and car constructors. This twinning-concept has been on his mind for a long time, and in close cooperation the two companies were able to fully implement this vision. Notably, this build project also started in the very special anniversary year of 2019, with Mr Sukachev celebrating his 60th birthday, Contest Yachts their 60th anniversary, and Bentley Motors its 100th anniversary.

BOOTH NO.

JS8

MYS 2021 On 18 June 2021, Lürssen unveiled and successfully launched project Enzo, a striking and bespoke 115m superyacht, built for a repeat client who previously owned an 86m Lürssen. The owner was extremely impressed with the build process of his first yacht and wanted to replicate the experience, right down to the same build and design team, convinced that no one else could meet his particular demands. Once again, therefore, Nuvolari–Lenard was responsible for the exterior and interior design and Moran Yacht & Ship managed and supervised the project, all bringing with them their wide spectrum of experience and consolidated knowledge. The target for Enzo was to create a healthy and family-focused life on board, with numerous offerings for sports and activities including the extra-large gym on the skylounge deck and the spacious wellness area on the lower deck.

NEWS IN BRIEF LUSBEN

Lusben completely renews M/Y Masquenada

BOOTH NO.

QC2

After a major refit that lasted just nine months, Lusben has launched Masquenada, a 51m expedition yacht. The main focus was the external profile of the yacht – based on the work of Nauta Design – which has been radically transformed and extended in the stern block, as well as the complete renovation of the interior and the repainting of the entire superstructure and part of the hull. During an intense and engaging private ceremony, held yesterday in Livorno at the Lusben shipyard, the 51m M/Y Masquenada expedition yacht was launched in the presence of her new owner, the fashion entrepreneur and great sailing enthusiast Pier Luigi Loro Piana. The Lusben staff, the crew, the architects and designers, as well as the owner himself, were involved in a laborious and wide-ranging refit that began in October 2020, which constituted a radical renewal of the yacht, originally conceived as a work boat.

ROYAL HUISMAN

Royal Huisman’s Huisman’s PHI is ready to shine

BOOTH NO.

QE22 MYS 2021 One of this year’s highlights is the launch of the 58.5m motoryacht PHI at Royal Huisman’s newbuild facility in Vollenhove, The Netherlands. Developed and constructed below 500GT, PHI is by far the longest motoryacht in this category, based on current Classification rules. PHI is a magnificently sensuous motor yacht from the drawing board of Cor D. Rover, who has based the general concept, exterior design and interior layout on many in-depth conversations with the owner over a period of years. Relating inside and outside to the ‘sectio divina’ or the Golden Ratio, PHI is the formula that governs the continuation of dimensions and shapes in natural proportions throughout the design. The PHI philosophy and deck levels are subsequently focused on three themes: the galaxy, the ocean surface and the underwater world.

he organisers of the MYS have presently confirmed that over 300 exhibitors will be participating. They have also announced that nearly 60 superyachts will be exhibited, including 40 brand-new launches by some of the most famous shipyards.

Focus on end users As announced last February, the show will focus on offering superyacht’s end clientele a positively upmarket visiting experience. The new Dockside Area, a part of the exhibition dedicated to companies directly linked with the construction or management of superyachts and tenders, will therefore be exclusively open to end customers on Wednesday

22 September, before being opened to all visitors starting on Thursday. The Dockside Area fits in perfectly with the way Monaco’s Port Hercule is divided up for the show. For several years now, each area of the exhibition has featured its own theme in order to better meet the visitors’ expectations.

Varied exhibition This year, visitors will be treated to two new exhibitions. The first is dedicated to sailing boats, held on Quai l’Hirondelle where several crafts will be moored opposite to the stands representing their respective shipyards, designers, and specialist equipment manufacturers. Yachting is a positive human adventure in which the virtual world is intrinsically limited.

The organisers of the MYS have confirmed that over 300 exhibitors will be participating.

Designer Gallery, the MYS will feature a Yacht Design & Innovation Hub; a new space for the presentation of yacht design projects where visitors can also interact with designers. These two areas perfectly complement the luxury tender and water toys exhibitions at Tender & Toys (Quai Antoine Ier), in addition to luxury cars at the Car Deck (Quai Antoine Ier), luxury products (Parvis Piscine tent), nautical equipment manufacturers and the latest tech releases (Darse Sud and Quai Albert Ier).

Safety is priority An anti-COVID sanitary protocol will be respected throughout the entire show, from the first day of preparations to the dismantling of the last stand and, of course, during the four days

of the show. General Manager of the exhibition Gaëlle Tallarida states, “We are following the evolution of the pandemic very closely, as well as the sanitary constraints applied in each of our visitors’ home countries. As organisers of the exhibition, our responsibility is to ensure safe and healthy conditions for each visitor, exhibitor, service provider, and member of staff. The MYS will therefore follow the health measures instated by the principality’s government, as well as the AllSecure health security programme, which is mandatory for all Informa Group events.”

Back to enjoying The pandemic has nevertheless brought about societal upheaval and direct changes to the way we live – not to mention consume. For the yacht

IN AN INTERVIEW WITH LIST GC’s MANAGING DIRECTOR CHRISTIAN BOLINGER, HE SHARED HIS VIEWS ON SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT CURRENT TOPICS OF THE SUPERYACHT INTERIOR INDUSTRY. ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF LIST GC.

S

ince the end of 2020, Mr Bolinger has been responsible for Sales, Manufacturing, and Project Calculation in the management team of the family-owned Austrian interior outfitting company. We wanted to know what trends and developments he can identify for the coming year, and what this means for List GC.

COVID-19 has resulted in many fundamental changes for thousands of companies. Is this also true for List GC? Yes, COVID has been a serious topic for us for more than a year now. During this time, we have faced ample challenges at List GC and we have re-established some of our processes from the ground up. Especially during those weeks of the pandemic when border closures, lockdown, and general uncertainty were the norm, we very quickly adapted to the new conditions. We replaced old routines with new work procedures and optimised our processes. To give an example, we held our project and sales team meetings as virtual meetings and cancelled all the business trips. This is quite unusual in our industry, where meetings in person used to be on the agenda on a daily basis. We also relied on local suppliers whenever possible, in order to avoid logistical obstacles like border closures, and thus saved time and money. We were able to supply the expected quality reliably and on time, in spite of all that was going on.

List GC Managing Director Christian Bolinger shares his views on some of the most important current topics of the superyacht interior industry.

Other than that, we see that many owners want their place of retreat to be safe, both for themselves and their crew. Ways of minimising infection potential have been part of many design agendas since the outbreak. For example, on our side, we focused on door and handle solutions and general surface applications, while our AC partners investigated ventilation.

NAVAL ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

Planning and selection of materials must also take external influences into account.

What is the current situation in the superyacht industry in general? The pandemic is not yet over, but we’re nevertheless feeling quite confident. It became very clear this past year that, as projects planned for the long term, luxury yachts are largely independent of the economy. We have seen an increase in demand for new superyachts and large numbers of orders being placed with international shipyards. This is clearly a positive situation for us as interior outfitters and suppliers. We have been cooperating with many of our customers for years and this, combined with the fact that we’ve been able to demonstrate that we’re a trustworthy and reliable partner, means that we’ve come through recent months well and can currently rely on a stable economic basis, despite the challenging times.

So, in other words, things remain largely the same? On the contrary! Our industry is active and innovative solutions are always in demand, such as in the area of exterior furniture. There is currently a clear trend towards new, larger living spaces on board. The design is moving away from clearly demarcated areas towards smooth

s u p e r y a c h t - i n d u s t r y.c om

List GC.indd 15

transitions. The connection between inside and outside is becoming increasingly important. As a result, we’re seeing interior designers consciously including parts of the exterior. This also changes the requirements for on-deck furnishings. The planning and selection of materials must also take external influences into account. This is where we’re able to contribute our know-how and craftsmanship. Our strengths include seamless compatibility and optimal use of high-quality materials in the outside area, where they are exposed to seawater and weather. That’s why we’re perfectly positioned for this growing line of business.

Which other developments can you identify? We think that sustainability is another important trend in the industry. For yachts, this currently plays a role in relation to the engine types, air conditioning, and waste management. This makes it even more important for us to think further and in a more sustainable way, to be pro-active, and make our contribution in our work processes, approaches, and production, just like we did when we started using photovoltaics on our company buildings in Bad Erlach, Lower Austria. We used offcuts in our

apprentice workshop rather than disposing of them, we built know-how for our work on sustainable surfaces and made our processes – from engineering through to project management – more efficient from the offset to reduce logistical efforts and improve our ecological footprint. It is also great to see that owners are striving to reduce the ecological footprint of new-builds and major refits. However, I am missing this development on the interior side of the industry, where interior outfitters are still guided by boundaries that hinder a comprehensive application of sustainable solutions and processes. I am waiting for the challenge of building an interior that is truly driven and defined by sustainable guidelines. This would require a different mindset and perception of quality, as you would need to accept certain imperfections from nature, resulting in a lower waste of base products such as leather, stone, or veneers, for example.

The client has entrusted project management to ACP Surveyors and delivery is planned for September. During the launching ceremony, the client was so kind to share the following words with all Turquoise employees present at the ceremony: “I am of the sea. I am happiest when I feel the wind in my hair and the sand beneath my feet.” Having recently sold 79m Project Toro and with 54m Project Tala scheduled as the next launch, Turquoise Yachts is excitedly and confidently looking towards the future after this new milestone.

Creating harmony With regard to NB66’s design, exterior designer Alessandro Valicelli says “Visually, the decks decrease progressively towards the aft end creating a profile with strong diagonal lines that create harmony between the superstructure shapes and the hull.” NB66 has sleek, elegant external styling by Mr Vallicelli, which deserved an equally special layout and interior. The Ken Freivokh Design team set out to create an innovative, contemporary interior experience with a focus on classical elegance, always aiming to achieve a layout focused on maximum integration between decks and between key internal spaces, all designed to maximize continuity of line and long sightlines.

PERFECTION AND COMFORT. Design and technology at the highest level.

Welcome aboard Making the stay onboard an unforgettable experience calls for creative and innovative developments. From the yacht‘s architecture to the engineering to the interior design, specialists develop an integrated concept that pursues this very aim. The Raxofix Viega piping system, perfectly tailored to the yacht‘s construction, guarantees the reliable transport and efficient distribution of potable water and electrical power. A key advantage: wet rooms and cabin elements can be pre-fabricated with Raxofix for quick, easy and reliable installation in the yacht later using lightweight plastic pipes – no need for sealing elements. This saves on weight and ensures efficiency. Small dimensions and a low water volume guarantee good drinking water hygiene. The Viega Visign flush plates, with their ultra-modern look and intelligent technology, add a designer touch to the bathroom. The touchless flush technology guarantees the best possible hygiene. Mr Vallicelli designed luxury with a helipad, Jacuzzi & fold-down balconies.

Classical elegance Large windows add natural light to the salons, dining room and guest’s cabins. The owners’ quarters on the upper deck are wrapped in a continuous window overlooking a private exterior sitting area, inclusive of two side terraces. The rectangular windows on the main deck in the full-beam zone of the hull are drawn with a firmer geometric approach unlike the windows in the master suite and are dimensioned according to their correspondence with the standard and VIP guest cabins. “The design focus is on classical elegance”, says Ken Freivokh. “The idea is to achieve a layout that has complete integration between the decks and key internal spaces – with everything designed to maximise the continuity of the yacht’s lines as well as long sightlines.” The central lobby is dominated by a stunning multideck atrium, centred on a spiral staircase with the main entrance boasting a double height sculptural space. The yacht’s interior has been designed to be bright and welcoming with a harmonious and balanced scheme. Materials include carefully selected veneers, marbles and granites, and hand-picked leathers.

The accommodation for fourteen guests has been conceived for maximum flexibility, with some of the suites capable of opening seamlessly to adjoining suites that convert to private salons. The yacht features a huge full-beam beach club, which not only opens aft to the swimming platform, but also includes shell doors on either side, which open to become extended platforms to the sea. There is a tender garage with a massive shell door that gives access to a full

NAVAL ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

Earth 300 – A futuristic vessel for oceanic research A 13-STOREY ‘SCIENCE SPHERE’ ON BOARD AN EXPLORER VESSEL, EARTH 300 IS LARGE ENOUGH TO ACCOMMODATE 160 SCIENTISTS AND 22 STATE-OF-THE-ART LABORATORIES WHO TOGETHER will collaborate on new climate solutions with the help of the ship’s advanced technology. Set for launch in 2025, Earth 300 boasts a fascinating 300m in length and will be fully packed with green technology. The vessel is bigger than the Titanic and will be among some of the largest ships in the world. ALL IMAGES COURTESY OF AARON OLIVERA.

E

arth 300 founder and Chief Executive Aaron Olivera’s vision is to build a nuclear-powered ship dedicated to science, ocean exploration, and climate change awareness. Behind the design of the ship is International firm Iddes Yachts, led by naval architect Iván Salas Jefferson. Suitably futuristic, the bold new concept features a contemporary shape with a pared-down conceptual language and an aerodynamic form. Polish naval architecture firm NED worked alongside Iddes Yachts in finessing Earth 300’s otherworldly design, which is perforated with a pattern of geometric shapes extending towards the nose of the ship.

A floating computer Essentially, the ship will be built as a floating computer, as most of the vessel will be filled with scientific equipment that a fleet of climate scientists will use to capture real-time data. A combination of built-in sensors, artificial intelligence, robotics, machine learning and real-time data processing will make sense of the

data, as well as the world’s first commercial, ocean-going quantum computer. All the information gathered will be open-source and shared with other climate scientists as part of the mission to unite both science and exploration to take on some of the biggest challenges on earth.

Nuclear power Powered by atomic energy, the zero-emission superyacht is powered by an onboard molten salt reactor based on technology being pursued by companies like Moltex, Thorcon, Samsung and Seaborg. It’s a first, as quantum computing and a molten salt reactor have never before been installed on a ship. Mr Olivera and his consortium are championing nuclear power from a new breed of nuclear reactors that use molten salt as both coolant and fuel. These reactors (Marine Molten Salt Reactor, or m-MSR) were first developed in the United States in the 1960s. Ultimately, they were replaced by lightwater

reactors, which became standard for nuclear energy production. The US Navy powers its ships on pressurised water reactors. As this extraordinary initiative caught our attention, we asked Mr Olivera some questions that arose regarding Earth 300.

First of all, could you give us a short introduction of yourself and how you became involved in this innovative project? Mr Olivera: I was born in Gibraltar, studied in the UK, and have lived in Singapore for most of my adult life. I’ve been an entrepreneur all my life and experienced working in a myriad of industries. Back in 2015, I found myself in the Maldives where I was developing a resort project. Whilst there, I went for a dive and saw bleached corals, they were dead. I learnt that with excess carbon we are poisoning our

s u p e r y a c h t - i n d u s t r y. c o m

oceans, killing sea life, and that if the oceans die we will too, as 70% of oxygen that we breathe comes from the oceans. I found myself in Monaco a short while later when I was President of Royal Falcon Yachts. I visited the oceanographic museum where Jacques Cousteau was a director and I thought of his vessel Calypso and of being able to take people on grand scientific journeys, along with the greatest minds, explorers, scientists, and industrialists, and to go on a learning journey together. Finally, I thought that if we want to solve issues quickly, we needed the help of the entire world. The idea of galvanising humanity by building an iconic object that would inspire the world was a no brainer. I worked together with Iddes Yachts in Barcelona to have a yacht designed as a scientific sculpture for the seas, as a universal symbol for sustainability and for

humanity, one that would capture people’s attention, hearts, and imaginations on a global scale. Those were really the three main ingredients that resulted in Earth 300; realising that we are killing the planet, realising that we could use luxury to advance science, and finally building a global vehicle to galvanise civilisation.

What would be the advantages of building a science centre on sea instead of on land? Mr Olivera: There are four advantages and reasons for this. Firstly, if we want to effect global change, we will need a global vehicle. A ship is truly global, it can move around the world transporting ideas and know-how from continent to continent and visit 150 non-landlocked nations. Secondly, a ship offers an immersive environment. When taking the most intelligent and influential group of people and placing them at sea, where they face adventure and danger together, the kind of bonds that are built are very different to those if they would meet in a building on land. The fact that they are placed together inside a beautiful and inspiring environment means you have a genius cluster where these people are going to manufacture miracles. Thirdly, the oceans are the beating heart of the planet, and without water there can be no life. They act as a buffer by absorbing 50% of all excess carbon, so it makes sense to explore them all around the world. Lastly, the idea of being mobile means you have inbuilt adventure and excitement and the

surprise element, which is also critical for new bonds and ideas to germinate. We all remember the voyages of Jacques Cousteau and the Calypso going on grand romantic journeys in the name of science and greatness. When was the last time you had an adventure inside a static building?

Where will this gigayacht be built? Mr Olivera: The shipyard will most likely be in Germany or in South Korea where we have well-established links.

Now that the design has been completed, do you have an estimation of when construction will commence? Mr Olivera: To clarify, what we have completed is the preliminary naval engineering. We still need to engage in further engineering design, and this will take another 12-18 months, at which point we should be ready to start building.

Why did you opt for nuclear power from a new type of nuclear reactor that uses MSR technology?

Aaron Olivera’s vision is to build a nuclearpowered ship dedicated to science, ocean exploration, and climate change awareness.

Mr Olivera: We have considered the Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs) because you can literally fuel up and go at 32 knots for 30 years without refuelling, not to mention they are safe and sustainable, with almost zero waste There’s no way at present that other energy systems can deliver this. We would also like to state that we are currently open to other technologies. If better solutions are developed in the next four years, we are open to looking into these. In fact, regarding the MSRs there is a variety of suppliers and we have not yet chosen or signed any agreements with any of them.

Who are some of the key suppliers for the construction of Earth 300? Mr Olivera: The shipyard will be the main supplier, then we have really large engineering companies like Wärtsilä with whom we have signed an MOU to work together, and we have partnered with NED Project to complete the vessel’s naval engineering. There will be many more suppliers and we are presently in talks with around ten major candidates for items like coatings and satellites. And we have of course also signed an MOU with IBM for supplying the advanced technology.

Essentially, the ship will be built as a floating computer as most of the vessel will be filled with scientific equipment.

MARINE INNOVATION

A breath of fresh air FOUNDER AND PROUD OWNER OF SEPSYS, WILLEM VRAETS HAS WORKED IN THE YACHTING SECTOR SINCE HE WAS A TEENAGER. Six years ago, after realising that there aren’t any specialised companies in the Netherlands for air intake separation systems in the maritime sector, Mr Vraets founded SepSys. He knew he was the right man for the job, after gaining years of experience and extensive specialised knowledge in marine & offshore air intake systems. ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF SEPSYS.

epSys is a Dutch company that provides turnkey HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) solutions. The company develops and manufactures air intake separation systems in the Netherlands for marine & offshore applications worldwide. The key values of the company are quality products, innovation, flexibility, great customer service, and a personal touch that derives from Mr Vraets’ passion for the industry. The SepSys head office in Hoofddorp is only a stone’s throw away from Schiphol International Airport and Amsterdam.

Superyacht industry Mr Vraets explains, “Due to our flexibility and eye for detail, we have the pleasure of serving some of the finest yacht builders and refit yards worldwide. In addition, we often work for yachts directly. We have seen an increasing interest in air intake systems from owner’s teams in the recent years. Due to the pandemic, yacht owners are becoming more aware of the vital need for high quality air on board. Our services include ship visits and on-site replacement of mist eliminators and filter systems and that is why you can find our products on some of the greatest superyachts

ever built. We aim to design our equipment to make installation as easy as possible. When designing parts that need to be serviced on a regular basis, such as filter systems, we try to avoid the need for using tools and often create illustrated manuals so any crew member can do the job. My older brother Joeri Vraets, Technical Director at SepSys, taught me to always aim for making life easier for yourself. I consider this a great engineering rule.”

Products Mr Vraets continues to explain, “With regard to air intake, it is important that only air comes in. The yacht, it’s technical equipment, valuable interior and often fine pieces of art must be protected against harmful effects caused by contaminants such as salt water, dust, bugs, sand, and soot. The problem is not just corrosion, but these contaminants also form a breathing ground for health threatening problems like bacteria, mould, fungi, and viruses. Actually, the air intake separation system can be compared to the masks we wear to protect ourselves from breathing in any harmful contaminants. Our mist eliminators and filters are used for air

Complete HVAC solutions with Termodinamica Last year, SepSys became the Dutch distributor for Italian company Termodinamica Marine. Mr Vraets and Maurizio Tropea, Design and Production Manager at Termodinamica, met some years ago at the Monaco Yacht Show and recognised some core values and matching business ethics in each other. Besides their love of skiing, the two men soon found out that customer satisfaction and service level is at the top of their priorities. They decided to team up. Together with this

new collaborating partner, SepSys looks forward to assisting its customers in the yachting industry in all their HVAC needs ranging from supply of equipment to turnkey projects including installation. The companies currently have orders for six big projects in the Netherlands.

Independent yachting Termodinamica is a company that specialises in marine air conditioning. It was established in 2010 by three founders who have been working for industrial refrigeration and mechanics since the eighties. Their passion for the sea inspired them to start their endorsement and promote

their vision of onboard comfort. The Italian company offers advanced systems with powerful cooling and heat pump heating with the highest energy efficiency in the industry. The products are lightweight and compact, which allows for more space for the luxury area. The advanced electronic control keeps the humidity at a desired level. Thanks to higher delta temperature on the fan coils, the air flows can be limited, making the system more silent and increasing comfort on board. Reliability is at the highest level thanks to titanium sea water heat exchangers and avionic grade electronics. Mr Tropea explains, “Our products not only allow for a very low energy consumption, thus greener yachting classification, they also provide more independence to yacht owners who want to explore the world by extending the fuel autonomy.”

Moreover, Termodinamica is specialised in heat recovery systems for the make-up air unit, these systems can reclaim 70% of the energy on the air exhaust and release to the air intake. Together the companies offer state of the art technology and equipment that the most demanding yacht owners deserve in 2021.

Green expedition cruising Mr Vraets points out that people go on more and more expedition cruises around the world nowadays. The high cooling performance combined with the electronic humidity control offer a very high comfort level, also in the Caribbean. Termodinamica is also offering heat pump systems for North Pole routing instead of electric heating, which results in a major reduction in costs, around six times less.

experience has also played its part having been tapped into for the fabrication of the Main Deck aft section. And for the refit design and naval architecture, the Owner appointed the yard’s original partner for the naval architecture, Azure Yacht Design, to re-pen this iconic Amels from 83m to 89m.

A first step Damen Yachting Sales Manager Michel Coens explains what this refit launch means to the shipyard. “Welcoming any of the fleet back to the yard is always done with pride but for Here comes the sun, it runs even deeper. She represents the first step towards full custom and bigger projects. Many of the same craftsmen and women who were meticulously involved in the original build have been working on her during this refit, remoulding and reshaping her into the new masterpiece she is set to become. Her launch is a very proud moment. Her additional length and brand-new colour are stunning and we look forward to the final stages of the refit now coming together for delivery to her Owner later this summer.”

his first luxury expedition yacht with ice class constructed in Germany was named at MV Werften in Stralsund on 26 June 2021. The naming ceremony, duly complying with the strictest hygiene and safety regulations, took place in the finest weather on the ship’s helicopter deck. Guests included Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Peter Altmaier, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Economics Minister Harry Glawe, Genting Hong Kong’s Group President Colin Au, and MV Werften Managing Directors Peter Fetten and Carsten J. Haake. The event was viewed by several thousand people all over the world via livestream on YouTube and Facebook.

Good voyages at all times Ms Schwesig was to serve as Godmother of Crystal Endeavor. She wished the new ship good voyages at all times before she pressed the red yard buzzer to activate the bottle release. “The naming ceremony is a sign of Germany’s relaunch as a shipbuilding location”, states Mrs Schwesig. “Our shipyards are innovative high performers, with highly motivated experts and know-how acquired over decades. The employees at MV Werften have successfully driven the transformation process from containership production via special-

purpose shipbuilding to cruise ship construction in the last few years, demonstrating that even under difficult circumstances they can achieve top performances, also in recent months.” “Today is a landmark day as we christen Crystal Endeavor, the first and only Polar Class Six (PC6) expedition yacht to be built in Germany, and a testament to Crystal’s award-winning design and MV Werften’s superb German engineering with system redundancies, including 100% additional lifeboat capacity, to handle extreme polar conditions”, states Tan Sri Kok Thay Lim, Chairman of Genting Hong Kong, on the occasion of the naming ceremony.

Unparalleled and bold At 20,200GT, 164m long, and 23m wide, Crystal Endeavor is the fastest, highest-performing, and most spacious expedition mega yacht in its sector, with a passenger space ratio of more than 100. Her Polar Class PC6 classification enables her to navigate Arctic and Antarctic regions. She offers a total of 100 suites of between 28 and 105m² with 24-hour butler service for a maximum of 200 passengers. Jack Anderson, President and CEO of Crystal Cruises, praises the state-ofthe-art technology, innovative design, and high safety standards of Crystal Endeavor, describing her as an “unparalleled and bold new expedition yacht made in Germany”. He also notes, “She is precision engineered to launch a new standard in global travel”. This expedition yacht is the ninth ship in the fleet of Crystal Cruises.

Maiden voyage On 10 July, Crystal Endeavor cruised out of MV Werften in Stralsund. In the early morning, the signal horn of the yacht blared loudly several times over the Strelasund Strait to bid farewell to the Hanseatic City of Stralsund. Many Stralsund shipyard employees and their families waved goodbye to ‘their’ ship from the quayside. Hundreds of onlookers – both local people and tourists – had also gathered in Stralsund to wave farewell to the expedition mega yacht, which departed from MV Werften in Stralsund, where she was designed and built, bound for Iceland and her inaugural voyages.

From left to right: Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Peter Altmaier, State Secretary in the Ministry of Finance of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Heiko Miraß, Genting Hong Kong’s Group President Colin Au, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig, and MV Werften Managing Directors Peter Fetten and Carsten J. Haake.

From here, Crystal Endeavor went en route to arrive in Reykjavík on 15 July. She departed from Iceland’s capital on her inaugural voyage on 17 July on the first in a series of five 10-night immersive voyages circumnavigating Iceland’s most dramatically beautiful and fascinating locales. The ‘Luxury Iceland Expedition’ voyages will sail round-trip from Reykjavík. These voyages will be followed by the 10-night ‘Journey of Vikings: Iceland & Norway’ from Reykjavík to Tromsø, departing on 5 September. Additional autumn departures include the 13-night ‘Norwegian Fjords & Scottish Isles Exploration’ from Tromsø to London, departing 15 September, featuring the fjords and UNESCO treasures of Norway and an overnight stay in Edinburgh, and the 11-night ‘Breton, Bordeaux and Beyond’ from London to Lisbon, departing on 28 September and highlighted by two nights in the heart of Bordeaux and an overnight call in London.
