An Eventful Decade
MARCO GEELS | CCO MARCO@YNFPUBLISHERS.COM
THIS YEAR’S MONACO YACHT SHOW WAS ONCE AGAIN A GREAT EVENT WITH A FANTASTIC TURNOUT. IT BENEFITTED FROM THE EXTRA SPACE PROVIDED BY THE NEW PREMISES OF THE MONACO YACHT CLUB, OPENED back in June by Sovereign Prince Albert II. Amongst the yachts displayed were some truly amazing superyachts, such as Solandge from Lurssen, Equanimity from Oceanco and Grace E from Perini Navi-Picchiotti. As always, Monaco provided a great opportunity to catch up with old acquaintances and to meet new people. In this issue of SuperYacht Industry you’ll find a preview of another major industry show – the METS 2014 in Amsterdam, taking place from 18 - 20 November. The METS trade show is, in my opinion, the most important show for the pleasure yacht and superyacht supply chain. Most suppliers of the yachting industry will be exhibiting their latest products and there will also be an excellent conference programme. As always SuperYacht Industry will be exhibiting and I look forward to seeing you at our booth 09.619, in the SuperYacht Pavilion. Also in this issue we have a focus on one of the top superyacht nations – Germany. We feature both builders and suppliers. Additionally, we have a paints system and coating special and an extended article featuring a fantastic trio of aluminium hulled superyachts that combine high performance and comfort, from Benetti, Heesen and ISA Yachts. Back in September, Yellow & Finch Publishers, the publisher of SuperYacht Industry, organised the 4th annual charity Maritime Golf Event. Over 100 maritime professionals helped raise over EUR 13,000 for KiKa, the Cancer-Free Children Foundation. You can read more about the golf event on pg 55. On behalf of KiKa, I’d like to take the opportunity, not only to thank all those involved, but also to invite you to the next event in September 2015. You can find more information on our website. Also in September, we released our 2015 Media Kit, detailing next year’s editorial programme for our entire range of magazines. The Media Kit provides all the information you need to maximise your marketing opportunities. Feel free to get in touch for more information or to discuss your article ideas for next year. In 2015 we will celebrate 10 years of SuperYacht Industry. I’d like to take the chance here to thank all our readers and advertisers for helping to make the magazine such a success and I look forward to sharing more news with you over the coming years.

Sale of Palo Alto Moran Yacht & Ship has sold the 112m Lürssen new build, Project Palo Alto. The yacht was commissioned for a longtime charter client who has, over the past 7 years, chartered some of the largest and highest quality motor yachts in the world. The experience has led to intense owner involvement, from design of guests accommodations to propulsion package selection, all the way to crew area arrangement. This project will be the largest yacht to date that Moran Yacht & Ship has built at Lürssen. With an interior and exterior styling by Andrew Winch Design, Project Palo Alto will feature two helicopter pads, a 12m swimming pool, a resort inspired spa in the aft of the vessel and palatial staircases. In addition to a massive private owner’s deck, eleven other staterooms will accommodate 22 additional guests in absolute comfort.

Heaviest Rig Ever Stepped in Palma
The RSB Rigging Solutions team re-stepped the 22t, 65m mast on board the Perini Navi 56m Ketch Asahi, which is the heaviest mast ever to be re-stepped in Palma. The boat arrived in Palma de Mallorca in April and the RSB team worked all summer on her rigging service programme. During September the team redressed both masts and prepared them for the re-stepping procedure. Due to the weight of Asahi’s main mast it was again necessary to bring the crane for the re-step over from Barcelona.
Heesen Yachts Launches Alive Heesen Yachts launched YN 17042, Alive. Equipped with a Hull Vane, she represents a dramatic advancement in performance. The subsea wing harnesses waves to produce power; this combined with the fast displacement hull and conventional diesel engines produce remarkable results. M/Y Alive is 35 percent more efficient than any other yacht of her size and 35 percent less power is needed to produce almost 16 knots top speed in flat sea conditions.

NEWS IN BRIEF ICON Yachts 73m Conversion ICON Yachts have been commissioned to complete the 73m explorer yacht Legend, formerly known as Giant. This bespoke conversion project’s design for the transformation has been finalised by Diana Yacht Design. Legend is a fully classified Class 1 icebreaking ship, which will be converted into a superb charter yacht, capable of carrying 30 guests, without losing her safety and strength as an icebreaker. The vessel was originally built to the highest specifications by the Royal IHC shipyard. Alongside the completion of the technical and system upgrades of this magnificent Icebreaker, extensive modifications to her exterior will be made.
Hakvoort to Build 38m Bluewater Cruiser
Success for Isle of Man This year’s Monaco Yacht Show saw a new collaboration between private and public sectors from the Isle of Man. The newly refurbished government stand was a joint venture between the Isle of Man Ship Registry and the Isle of Man Superyacht Forum, which saw professionals from the private sector on hand to answer any technical questions in conjunction with Ship Registry surveyors and registrars. With many high profile Manx flagged yachts on show this year and the 2nd annual Isle of Man Superyacht Forum breakfast taking place, the public/private partnership was a positive step in highlighting the Island as a centre of excellence for the superyacht Industry.

CLEARLY WANT TO LIFT THE LIMITS ON THE HOLY GRAIL OF LUXURY LIFESTYLE – COMBINING COMFORT WITH wave-shattering speed. It’s a challenge that yards, architects and innovative suppliers are determined to overcome. SuperYacht Industry’s Tom Scott looks at the technology below deck on three new deliveries from Heesen, ISA Yachts and Benetti. Perhaps unsurprisingly all three feature the renowned MTU Series 4000 main engines, but the technology for power, propulsion, stability and comfort goes much further.

Silver Wind S
ilver Wind is Italy-based ISA Yachts’ first ever ISA 140 composite motor yacht. According to ISA Yachts, Silver Wind is the world’s first yacht to utilise a combination of hybrid technology and water jets. Providing a potential solution to rising fuel costs, this 43.63m yacht combines high performance with low consumption.
Combining Power The hybrid propulsion system is the result of a collaboration between Siemens and ISA. While the Silver Wind can max out at 32 knots, she can comfortably cruise at 26 knots with the ‘conventional’ diesel-fuelled propulsion set up consisting of two MTU 16V 4000M93L engines driving two Rolls-Royce Kamewa waterjets through reduction gearboxes. The hybrid scope of the yacht’s power generation comes into play during low speed navigation. Then, two electric motors provide the waterjets with enough power to offer speeds of up to 8 knots. When connected to the gearbox, the same electric motors can work as shaft-generators during cruising, allowing the diesel generators to be switched off.
With Efficiency
The two diesel generators can operate at variable speeds, supplying power to the electric users and subsequently minimising fuel consumption and emissions, noise levels and maintenance needs. In electric mode, with a total fuel consumption is 90l/h, Silver Wind has a range of 2,600nm. Another important point is when the electric mode is used during yacht transfers, without guests on board, fuel consumption at speed is reduced from 55l/nm to 11l/nm. As the diesel generators can run at reduced speeds while the yacht is at anchor, guest comfort will only improve. Further comfort at anchor is guaranteed by fixed fin stabilisers with electric actuators. The advantages of hybrid propulsion are numerous and primarily based on the system’s inherent flexibility. Depending on the operational mode, both the main engines and generators run for less hours per year and, when in operation, at higher loads. Both factors lead to a reduction in maintenance. Furthermore, the main and auxiliary diesel engines can always operate at optimum efficiency, thus reducing

the specific fuel consumption and exhaust emissions as well as significantly lowering ambient noise levels. Finally, there is a considerable improvement of the redundancy: if the generator set fails, the two shaft generators can take over for the electric users. Alternatively, if the main engines fail, the two generators can power the propellers.
Augmented Reality The hybrid propulsion configuration is not the only source of innovation on board Silver Wind. The high-tech bridge incorporates augmented reality. The integrated system, developed by TEAM Italia and Transas, gives the captain an instantaneous understanding of the navigational situation. This is accomplished by integrating sensor input from the forward looking sonar, chart data or position and route data with a video of the surroundings. Balancing light indoor areas with generous outdoor deck spaces, this three-deck Silver Wind focuses on an elegant yet relaxed lifestyle. Just how relaxed is the atmosphere on board? The owner and his guests will enjoy Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) in their cabins. Patented by Videoworks in cooperation with the Politecnica delle Marche University, ANC significantly improves the experience of comfort by emitting an acoustic wave identical to that of the noise but with opposite frequency. This creates a no-noise bubble that prevents disturbance from typical low-frequency noises. Photo courtesy of Superyacht Media

enetti’s FB502 Panthera is a 47m aluminium yacht whose contemporary style is simultaneously sporty and elegant. It is the second yacht in Benetti’s 500s series and was constructed at their Livorno yard. The first yacht of the series, FB501 Imagination, came on the market in 2010 and the third yacht, FB503 Anastasia K, was launched in May 2014. Like her sister yachts, Panthera is 100 percent aluminium, 47m long and 8.8m wide. The hull geometry provides superior performance – a top speed of 24 knots – and crucially, significant stability while underway. Panthera‘s name is inspired by the Latin for ‘predator of all’ and from a performance point of view, this motor yacht is faithful to that title – she is lightweight and fast. While 47m long, the yacht’s aluminium construction means it only displaces 340t. This feature, when combined with the narrow and elongated semidisplacement hull, delivers superior performance. The MTU series 4000 engine combines power with a small footprint – a key factor on yachts with limited available space. One of the charactersitics is that the engine generates a high amount of torque, which translates to impressive acceleration possibilities: the Panthera can quickly reach its top speed. With the series 4000’s sequential turbo charging technology, each engine boasts a rated power of 2,880kW @ 2,050rpm delivering a maximum speed of 24 knots. The fuel consumption is 1,360l/h at a cruising speed of

22 knots. This improves significantly at lower speeds: the Panthera has a range of 3,400 miles at the more economical speed of 12 knots. Even when working at full load, the engines run very smoothly and display excellent acoustic properties. The electric power for onboard power and standby supply is provided by MTU branded gensets built by Northern Lights.
Timeless Elegance What sets Panthera apart from the rest is her timeless elegance. This fast and comfortable yacht reflects the refined personality of her owner who has commissioned a contemporary yacht. To achieve such high standards of luxury, Benetti’s in-house architects and designers worked very closely with the owner and his staff, so there was no need to engage any other designer. The owner representative had clear visions regarding design and realised her ideas with determination. The work was largely one of subtraction, of eliminating excesses and ostentation; the result is a style that suggests pure beauty under the banner of simplicity, something far beyond the merely fashionable.

Comfortable Ride During sea trials, Galatea exceeded contractual speed by more than 2 knots – hitting 29.7 knots. However, in this top superyacht segment speed is nothing without comfort and Galatea’s guests benefit from Heesen’s hull technology to ensure the ride is as graceful and luxurious as the interior. Drawing on the pedigree of the yard’s very successful 37m class, of which 10 have been built, Galatea’s handling is further enhanced by Active Interceptor stabilisers and zero-speed Seakeeper gyro stabilisers.

Space to Enjoy Galatea has been built for private use, with a requirement that the sun deck had maximum space for relaxing and dining. Her open flybridge layout gives a huge 85m2 of deck space that includes a helm station and a shaded dining area that is protected even underway by glass side panels. Her 8m beam delivers an exceptional interior volume with uncompromising interior design. Bespoke teak furniture, including a built-in teppanyaki grill, completes this upper deck. Inside, the 10m long saloon includes a large square lounge and a dining area aft adjacent to full-height glazed doors. With the doors open, guests can dine inside while enjoying fresh air and panoramic views. Ten guests can sleep in five cabins: there’s a fullbeam main deck master, two full-beam VIP doubles and two twin cabins on the lower deck, all of which have marble ensuite bathrooms. Frank Laupman of Omega Architects has created an interior design that has a distinctive personality based on a theme of Dutch expressionism.

Semi-Displacement Galatea’s 100 percent aluminium semidisplacement hull is powered through the water by twin MTU 16V 4000 M73L engines. Galatea also utilises MTU’s Blue Vision automation system that is based on their MCS-6 automation platform. Galatea is a fine example of Heesen’s core values of aluminium, speed and power. The yard also recently sold its first 45m fly bridge vessel YN 17145 – Project Necto – the largest sportster yet to be built by a Northern European shipyard. This larger all-aluminium semi-displacement yacht is expected to exceed 30 knots when it reaches sea trials in January 2016.

Quiet Engine Cooling Heinen & Hopman BPA189 seawater cooling system for the engine-room is a great idea, says the sales broker for Galatea. The system avoids large fans and blower noise often found on performance yachts. “In my opinion, this proves that the Heesen engineers are capable of ‘thinking outside of the box’ when it comes to finding innovative solutions to problems and puts the Sportster in a category of its own: A true performance yacht with nearly the acoustic qualities of a displacement yacht.”

METS 2014 The newest generation of spectrometers is the Lighting Passport, which is now being marketed in the marine industry exclusively by Mobile, Media & More. Weighing just 63.4 grams, it fits into a trouser pocket and is therefore ideally suited for use in yacht building. The Asensetek Smartphone Spectrometer measures 15 technical parameters, from the correlated colour temperature and the colour rendering index to colour space (CIE 1391 and 1976) and colour range to the peak wavelength and the dominant wavelength. The wavelength interval extends from 380 to 780nm, the illuminance from 100 to 50,000lux. The Asensetek Handheld Spectrometer is compatible with both iPhones (iOS) and Androids (4.4.2).
Lift Emotion is proud to announce that the first units of the hydraulic frequency controlled drive for elevators, which they showcased at METS last year, have been delivered with great success. The system is a great addition to high-end elevators in yachts, especially when it comes to the significant reduction of noise, power and heat. Lift Emotion’s experiences on the latest refits was that they had very little space for the elevator and developed a lift system suitable for the smaller range of yachts, allowing them to use small pits and trunk tops, but still offering the full functionality you would expect from an elevator. And since today’s new yachts are getting bigger, with multiple lifts, fire-rated doors are needed.

After intensive engineering and test phases, DMS Holland’s first AntiRoll stabilisation system was revealed. Thanks to its unique, dual-axis fin stabiliser, AntiRoll provides stabilisation both underway and at zero speed without any compromise of performance in either circumstance. The curved, high-aspect ratio fin significantly reduces the drag by between 50 and 75 percent whilst sailing. In addition, with the fin flapping at zero speed as opposed to rotating, a greater lifting force is generated providing a more stable platform. Of particular interest for sail yachts, the fin is also retractable and can be partly folded back in to the hull. i. www.antiroll.com

ELEGANT & GREEN FLOORING SYSTEM FROM MARRON JACHTBOUW
EcoDeck MARRON JACHTBOUW HAVE COME UP WITH AN ELEGANT SOLUTION TO THE GROWING DEMAND FOR ECOLOGICALLY SOUND PRODUCTS IN THE superyacht industry. The Marron-EcoDeck is a solvent free, polyurethane resin based flooring system that offers an aesthetically pleasing appearance, design freedom and easy maintenance, retaining its character over the entire product lifecycle.
I
n appearance, Marron-EcoDeck posseses similar qualities to that of the traditional superyacht flooring material – teak. Its colours are warm and inviting and create a luxurious maritime effect. The strong and flexible prefabricated elastic composite material presents a finish that is both hard-wearing and seamless.
Flexi-Deck A key feature of the EcoDeck is its flexibility, which paves the way for a wealth of design opportunities. For example, the flooring system is available in varying plant widths and can be presented with differing joint widths. The colour of the planks and joints is also variable, offering any number of specialist designs to the presented on the deck. The flooring system can be fully bonded to the vessel’s substructure, whether it is made of aluminium, steel or is mineral-based. All constituents in Marron-EcoDeck are developed and produced by Herculan Marine and are constantly monitored, both internally at an inhouse quality control laboratory and externally, by approved certification bodies and specialist laboratories. The panels are produced exclusively by Marron

in close concert with Herculan Marine, with the very latest CNC techniques.
Not Fade Away The Eco Deck can be supplied in sheets and/or solid sections, in accordance with digital measurements and AutoCAD drawings. It is installed by professionals, using the vacuum method and working in collaboration with Marron. EcoDeck has proven safe in compliance with SOLAS and IMO regulations. It presents a nonslip surface that is also easy to maintain. During its lifecycle the flooring will keep its functions at the minimum cost and is easy to repair, without risk of damage being caused to the colour or other properties. The composition and characters – such as its UV-light resistance – are such that the material does not yellow or fade as other composite ship decks are known to do. The ecologically friendly nature of MarronEcoDeck means that, at the end of the product’s lifecycle, it can simply be recycled.

Tebul
Tebul’s current generation of watertight sliding doors is demonstration of their innovative engineering. Specialised in electric door systems, in particular bulkhead doors designed for superyachts, cruise liners and other high-class vessels, their new mini-line is designed for luxury superyachts offering compact outer dimensions. The free opening of the door is maximised to a total height – only 160mm higher than the free opening. The company’s scope includes hardware with control systems, installation when needed and design support throughout the whole project. Tebul also provides services, spare parts and customer support during the product.
Cathelco Cathelco has introduced a new ballast water treatment system which is specifically designed for luxury yachts. It is based on a combination of filtration and UV technology making it completely chemical free. The compact design features shorter UV tubes and a smaller filtration unit – without any loss of efficiency. In order to save space in retrofit applications, the system can be supplied in modular form.
Fuchs Fördertechnik Customisation is the standard at Fuchs Fördertechnik. 100 percent safe and reliable, combined with elegant lines and a mirror finish, their crane systems for superyachts meet very stringent demands. Every product is individually designed to the highest standards of efficiency and functionality. One sector on which the experienced in-house designers at Fuchs have focussed their special attention is the continuous improvement of tenderboat cranes, lifeboat davits, rescue boat davits, knuckle boom cranes and retractable foremasts.
Hamann
Jets
Hamann’s high quality sewage treatment system, HL-CONT Plus, has been successfully tested according to IMO MEPC.227(64). Maintaining the proven functional principle, which does not use any sensitive parts such as filters or membranes, the system does not only meet but exceeds the requirements of the new guideline which will come into force on 1 January 2016. The process of the HL-CONT Plus is based on physical-biological treatment that includes maceration of sewage and dissolved air flotation for the reduction of TSS, BOD and COD as well as UV disinfection.
Jets Vacuum’s Pearl toilet was awarded the Norwegian Design Council’s Award for Design Excellence earlier this year. Despite its contemporary lines and subtle appearance, the Pearl toilet was still a somewhat unconventional choice for a jury that tends to favour more traditional design work. The simple yet curvaceous, Nordic-inspired look of this new toilet is a breath of fresh air in Jets Vacuum’s yacht product line, offering both excellent hygienic properties and a refreshingly new approach to wall-mounted installation.

EESTAIRS STAIRCASES & BALUSTRADES
Beauty Between Levels STAIRCASES ARE BECOMING ONE OF THE BOLDEST INTERIOR DESIGN STATEMENTS, EMBRACING A PASSION FOR INNOVATION AND ENGINEERING extraordinary products which prompt an emotional response. Internationally operating staircase designer and manufacturer EeStairs has completed bespoke staircases and balustrades on several luxury yachts and ships, including the MS Northlander and the MS Sofia.
E
eStairs says flexibility throughout the concept and build stage to completion and delivery has been integral to their projects and has resulted in remarkable installations both on land as on these luxury yachts. They offer the MS Northlander as an example, which, they say, stands out as a result of the attention to detail they applied to make her interior so inviting.
Best of Both Worlds “The Northlander presented a remarkable opportunity to both express ourselves as designers and contribute to a truly stunning project,” says Cornelis van Vlastuin, EeStairs’ Creative Director. “Rather than settling for the mass market appeal of a beige colour scheme, the Northlander’s designers opted for striking burnt oranges and chocolate browns; using a combination of crumpled gold foil on the internal balustrade of the staircase, combined with crumpled gauze on the outside of the stairs. Although the installation of a feature staircase within such an enclosed space was a pioneering project – it was a challenge that we were confident to embrace.”
Flowing Lines The 42m MS Sofia required a staircase that reflected the smooth flowing lines and surfaces running throughout her three luxurious decks. EeStairs designed a helical timber model to wind
www. s u p e r y a c h t - i n d ustr y.c om
EeStairs.indd 31
elegantly from deck to deck. They also fitted an outer balustrade in stainless steel to maintain the feeling of a spacious and flowing interior. At the very top of the staircase, opening into the upper deck, a curved glass wall partitions different areas on the deck whilst letting light flood into the staircase and down through into the second deck and below. In addition, soft blue LED lighting above each tread, set into the curved outer wooden panel, maintains the presence and highlights the staircase into the night.
Engineering Ingenuity Each staircase created by EeStairs is a handcrafted work of art combined with engineering ingenuity. As with all superyachts, installation of a staircase can be challenging due to the central position within the structure. Added to this, EeStairs aims to retain the structural integrity of each staircase by installing whole sections wherever possible. EeStairs is committed to applying innovation and engineering creativity to challenges such as this. EeStairs’ philosophy is to offer cutting-edge designs combined with a passion for engineering extraordinary products, perfectly suited to the luxury superyacht environment.

NOBISKRUG’S VISION 22
Redefining the Art of Building Superyachts AT MYS 2014, GERMAN SUPERYACHT BUILDERS NOBISKRUG SENT A FORWARD-THINKING MESSAGE TO THE WORLD. THEY LAUNCHED THE NEW BRANDING STRATEGY AND MARKET POSITIONING THAT THEY CALL Vision 22. The message was clear: with their expertise, ingenuity and engineering power, Nobiskrug intends to build superyachts that will last for generations – for the 22nd century. Nobiskrug Managing Director Susanne Wiegand explains for SuperYacht Industry.
T
he past couple of years has seen Nobiskrug complement its product and service portfolio by acquiring two additional shipyards: Kielbased HDW Gaarden and Lindenau Shipyard. The acquisitions have strengthened Nobiskrug’s position across the board, covering yachts, naval, offshore and refit and repair segments. “As a result our orders received increased and the turnover doubled in the past year,” says Nobiskrug Managing Director Susanne Wiegand. “Additionally, the shipyard in Kiel Gaarden is a significant improvement for the superyacht building possibilities.”
Look to the Future Following such growth comes the company’s new branding strategy – Vision 22 – which outlines Nobiskrug’s concept for the future of superyacht building up to, and including, the 22nd century. “Our new vision reflects our mission of what we want to accomplish and where we want to be in the next years,” continues Ms Wiegand. “Supported by our core values and combined with the driving force to make a difference within the industry, we redefined the way we look at

the art of building superyachts.” Nobiskrug revealed Vision 22 to the world during the Monaco Yacht Show where it attracted a lot of interest with its view of tomorrow. The company’s vision for the future is clear: “It is a fact that, the decisions we make today will, with no doubt, influence the future, so it is definitely worth thinking how could the next generation benefit from what we do today,” stresses Ms Wiegand. The company’s goal, she goes on to say, is to build superyachts that will last over a century. This is not just an empty promise – the Kiel-built Talitha G and Sea Cloud, built in 1927 and 1931 respectively, are still active participants in the superyacht world.
Extensive Facilities In addition to new build activity, the refit market is an attractive one for any yard so how does the repair and conversion sector fit into Nobiskrug’s new vision? “Our superyacht refit department has no limits when it comes to size and the complexity of any refit or conversion,” explains Ms Wiegand. The trio of Nobiskrug yards have a 160m long

climate-controlled superyacht hall, a 400m long dry dock and in-house workshops. “With our modern facilities, which are unique in the world, we can handle any yacht up to 400m.” The repair department is not just based at Nobiskrug’s facilities in Germany: “Our flying squad can be immediately on site, anywhere in the world, when issues arise, ensuring that ship downtime is kept to the minimum.”
No Compromise Building superyachts involves building strong partnerships with companies who share the same beliefs and goals. “We need strong, cooperative partners with a deep understanding of requirements, openness to new ideas and flexibility [with regards] to new technology areas,” says Ms Wiegand. “In order to keep the development of technology and sustainability as the primary driving force of our superyacht building, we see ourselves associated

with the best suppliers and service providers the industry has to offer.” Technology and sustainability play important roles in Nobiskrug’s vision. Ms Wiegand: “If the demand for energy efficient and environmentally friendly vessels increases notably in the next years, the result will be that the market opens up for high performance technological innovations and sophisticated systems.” With more than a century of knowledge and expertise in building yachts, Nobiskrug has the strong foundations to look to the future. “To us, it’s a personal matter – turning the visions and ideas of our customers into reality without any compromises.”

Improving the Award Winner Nomen Products
Nomen recently developed two CLIP-cleat innovations. In 2013 the CLIPcleat won the DAME Award in the category of deck equipment, sails and rigging. Different from the first version, the new CLIP-cleat will be screwed from the top so no one needs to work underneath the deck to fix the screws. Furthermore a new full metal version will be available next year. The mooring cleat always remains closed, through the turning clips, no matter whether it is belayed or not. This means lines cannot get caught or cause injuries. What’s more, casting off is possible at all times.

YACHTLITE BOOTH NO.
10.607 METS 2014
In the Superyacht Pavilion at this year‘s METS, Yachtlite will be showing an extraordinary connection between light and sound: the V-Floor. Following its world premiere at the Monaco Yacht Show, some V-Floor-elements will now exhibit at METS. Yachtlite’s long-term business associate Perfect Audio from Hannover has created a spectacular niche product with the development of a vibrating bass dance floor. Bass sound waves flow through dancers on the floor, whereas bystanders can neither feel nor hear them. The surface is a further development of the already proven Yachtlite FloorLites named XR1: freely controllable and perfectly illuminating LED light elements, here inlaid in teak flooring. The lighting technology is tested according to GL-criteria, is extremely robust and is, of course, perfect for dance floors or pool bases. “XR1” has already been very successfully established in large-scale projects.

SUPERYACHT CHASE BOAT, CRAZY TOO, SAW ITS WORLD DEBUT AT THE CANNES YACHTING FESTIVAL 2014. THE 25TH EVOLUTION OF THE SUCCESSFUL OTAM MILLENIUM 58 HARDTOP SERIES, THE 18.7M CRAZY Too stands out with a custom-coloured black hull and hardtop, as well as a deck entirely wrapped in a Satin black and carbon effect film, applied by the expert company Wild Group International.
B
uilt as the chase-boat for an existing superyacht, Crazy Too is a unique boat, a concentration of performance, technology and design. The owner’s brief to Cristiano Gatto was very concise: “I would like a total black look”. The result: a splinter of obsidian, a sparkling Open with its ‘all black’ livery leaving onlookers in no doubt that it has been produced to impress.
Vinyl Finish The Wild Group International wrapped the decks and cockpit in a Satin black and carbon effect. Non-slip rubber was also applied to the sides. The choice of vinyl film over conventional methods such as paint and gel-coat illustrates the industry’s growing confidence in vinyl. According to Greg Hoar, Director of the Wild Group International, yacht owners and captains increasingly see the advantages in using films as an alternative to paint. “Modern day films are quite exceptional if
www. s u p e r y a c h t - i n d ustr y.c om
Crazy Too.indd 39
applied correctly and are now considered ‘paint on a roll’,” he commented. “Films are clean, non-intrusive, quick to install, environmentally friendly and offer excellent UV resistance. From radar arms to full hull and superstructure covering, films can be used to totally change the look and feel of a yacht. When thinking about resale, a film finish can be removed and while it is in place it is protecting the surface underneath.“
Microfibre Wall Coverings The Cristiano Gatto Design Team also customised the below-decks spaces, giving them character thanks to sophisticated chromatic combinations using high quality materials with exceptional finish. Delicate shades of beige used for textiles and leathers, furnished by Extreme, combine with high technology synthetics such as carbon fibre for the tables and furniture tops surfaces and also as a decorative material on doors and

cupboards. The team also specified microfibre products from Majilite to cover the owner’s cabin walls located in the “V” bow. This material uses Nitek, which reproduces the structure of natural leather, giving a wrinkle free surface just like a second skin.

DUBOIS & ROYAL HUISMAN’S NEW DESIGN
“BUILD ME A BEAST” DUBOIS NAVAL ARCHITECTS AND ROYAL HUISMAN USED THE OCCASION OF THE MONACO YACHT SHOW TO OFFICIALLY UNVEIL THEIR LATEST COLLABORATION. THE OWNER’S BRIEF WAS EXCITING TO SAY THE LEAST. The response can only be described as a high performance, edgy and innovative 58m sloop. New in every sense of the word, the design draws on the past experience of both designer and yard, whilst encouraging advances in all the disciplines required to design and build such a yacht.

his has to be an edgy and innovative weapon – fast and furious,” stressed the owner. “Build me a beast.” Faced with such a design mandate, Royal Huisman and Dubois Naval Architects have answered the call with dramatic sheer lines and a sculpted bow. “The owner is a highly experienced yachtsman and offshore racing sailor,” says Ed Dubois. “He wanted a high-performance, go-anywhere cruising yacht that not only looks excitingly different, but is also beautifully built and luxuriously comfortable.” The moulded glass superstructure and crisp stern shape add to the look of what is an inherently progressive design.
Tank Analysis Successful tank testing of the slender, easily driven hull form recently took place at the Wolfson Unit in Southampton using a very large 6m model. “The bigger the model, the more accurate the results, because you can scale everything except the viscosity of water,” explains Mr Dubois. “Our aim is to reduce the wetted surface to minimise drag, while still retaining good stability. The hull lines will be finalised by November following the results of the tank tests.” The computational fluid dynamics analysis of the high-span lifting keel and the configuration of the keel, bulb and carbon fibre rudder arrangement is also under way. According to Mr Dubois, the yacht compares well with the company’s best designs such as Kokomo and Ganesha. Rondal is providing the 71m mast and the highaspect sail plan and a powerful square-top mainsail will add the final measure of horsepower that will be tamed by twin helm stations, notable for Royal Huisman’s ability to engineer these without power assistance.

furniture pieces by Francis Sultana. The master ‘apartment’ includes a sauna, a study and a gym with a large viewing hatch in the hull to admit fresh air and natural light. The gym and study can also be converted into additional accommodation if necessary. Further cabins include two guest staterooms. Accent pieces and exotic finishes will be created in Rick Baker’s London-based workshop. Having been involved in some very high-profile projects, The Light Corporation has been asked to artfully shed light on the project. On deck, meanwhile, wide teak planking with off-white seams will downplay a hidden crane, tender garage and large swim spa forward. The large open main deck salon has attached outdoor seating.

Perfect Fit “Given their reputation for excellence, Royal Huisman was the owner’s choice of shipyard from the very start,” continues Mr Dubois. “This is a thought-provoking design that does not take for granted the marriage of high performance, style and comfort. She’s a design that marks a fresh and progressive turning point in our long and successful history. This is some yacht, inspired by a client looking for the next new thing; a dream project for both designer and shipyard.” Following the official public announcement of this 58m sloop at the Monaco Yacht Show recently, keel laying is scheduled for January 2015 with delivery expected in the spring of 2017. “A great client, a great design team, and a great project,” concludes Royal Huisman Managing Director Alice Huisman. “Everything about this project has our name on it: Royal Huisman is the perfect fit for every aspect of the project and the requirements to build it.”

SKF AVOID ALIGNMENT & VIBRATION PROBLEMS WITH OPTIMAL DESIGNED SHAFTLINE
ShaftDesigner
UPGRADED
SKF SOLUTION FACTORY – MARINE SERVICES ARE ALL SET TO RELEASE AN UPDATED VERSION OF THEIR SHAFTDESIGNER COMPUTER-AIDED ENGINEERING SOFTWARE PACKAGE that features developments that are of particular benefit to the superyacht industry. ShaftDesigner is being developed in collaboration with Intellectual Maritime Technologies (IMT) as a direct response to the requirements of SKF’s clients, many of whom are active in the yachting arena.

KF initially released ShaftDesigner in 2009. Since then they have continually upgraded the software to ensure it remains at the top of its game. Continuous evolution is facilitated via collaboration with a team of programmers at IMT. The package has been created as a bridge between IMT’s theoretical expertise and SKF’s practical experience in the field of shaft alignment and chocking of machinery.
Observe & Improve SKF’s rationale for introducing ShaftDesigner stems from observation of what the company refers to as three ‘problem areas’ in available software. Geoffrey de Vlaam, Marketing and Sales Manager at SKF Solution Factory – Marine Services, says, “We were looking to improve on these areas that we identified, which were, the lack of a single shaft model to perform all types of shaft related calculations, an inability to analyse different operation conditions – forcing users to maintain many files, and a disparity between knowledge of the propulsion train and the capability of software solutions available.”

NAVAL ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN
Superyacht Potential
Building the Design
ShaftDesigner is of notable use to the superyachting industry, where relatively long and thin shafts are typical. Such shafts often feature great distances between shaft support bearings, making them sensitive to whirling vibrations. Tackling such a scenario has been the aim of the latest updates to ShaftDesigner, which will be released on the market later this year. New features are calculation of whirling vibration damped natural frequencies, calculation of forced whirling vibration and 3D animations for the presentation of the whirling vibration calculation results. Because superyachts operate at multiple critical RPMs, further levels of vibration can have an adverse effect on passenger comfort. The new ShaftDesigner features, therefore, are particularly well suited to this industry.
During the vessel construction phase the builder enters exact measurements of components and ShaftDesigner produces the data for various alignment techniques including jack-load, laser and strain gauge alignments, which can be used at stages throughout the shaft line installation. For maintenance and repair functions a model of the shaft line is developed before commencing. With the subsequent calculation of the alignment and possible vibrations, potential issues can be identified at an early stage. The recognition and checking of stress points avoids costly down time in the event of failure down the line.
Creating a Model SKF and IMT have developed ShaftDesigner to be of use during vessel design, construction and maintenance and repair phases. During design, the user creates an accurate representation of components. ShaftDesigner features a drag and drop function that ensures the fast and smooth development of a 3D model. Any alterations made subsequently to the model automatically update in all applications. To assist in analysis, the software automatically generates graphical output to support the results. From an engineering point of view this provides a useful tool for the exploration of offsets, leading to optimisation of component parts, based on acceptance criteria set by the user. Because ShaftDesigner can identify any alignment and vibration issues during the design phase, time-consuming and costly re-alignment delays are avoided.
Responding to Client Needs Mr De Vlaam: “We have developed the software in response to client requirements and many of these clients are active in the superyacht industry, such as major propeller and shaft component manufacturers as well as propulsion and yacht designers.” Recently, the company have been using ShaftDesigner technology on a yacht in Ancona, Italy, as Mr De Vlaam explains. “We received the request to check the alignment of the complete propulsion line of this completed new build yacht. During the vessel’s first sea trial there were some vibration issues. We made a plan of approach to check and verify the current condition of the alignment and performed vibration measurements. We found some minor issues, such as run-outs on the propellerintermediate shafts and some pipework was pulling the engines aside. “However, as we could identify this at a relatively early stage, the outcome of the project was that noise and vibration levels were reduced and alterations were made before there was any damage.”
SKF Vibracon Chocks SKF Vibracon chocks also offer benefits to the superyacht industry. These permanent and re-useable machinery mounting chocks are suitable for all types of rotating or critically aligned machinery. Over the last 20 years, SKF has sold over a million SKF Vibracon units. Developments have been a low profile model for tight spaces and, more recently, a surface treated version for harsh marine environments.

BETTER & BETTER RONDAL’S PERFORMANCE BOOMS
WITH SAILING YACHTS BECOMING EVER LARGER AND THE SAIL LOADS EVER GREATER, RONDAL’S MKIII PERFORMANCE BOOM IS A COMPACT outhaul system that can cope with higher loads and deeper reefs without incurring weight penalties. Editor Tom Scott looks at the details.
Fast Furling Constantly seeking new ways to enhance mast performance through design, weight saving, reduction of windage and styling, the Rondal in-house design and engineering team have developed the third version of their successful performance boom. Incorporating all the features of its predecessors, the MKIII performance boom does not require guide arms so there is no sail chafing. Even in reefed positions, the boom offers controllable mainsail foot tension and the fact that there is no load on

the mandrel results in a more stable and powerful mainsail. The MKIII has a hydraulic motor installed inside the mandrel at the forward end of the boom. This end of the boom is also open to allow the mainsail luff to be as close to the mast as possible.
Finishing Touches The Rondal team is close to completing a 48m carbon fibre mast for a 37m sailing sloop designed by Dykstra Naval Architects. The mast will be equipped with a carbon forestay and

PAINT SYSTEMS & COATINGS
Growing Recognition According to the RMCI, the qualification is the first specific qualification for marine coatings inspectors that covers superyachts and leisure/pleasure vessels. The course and qualification has been 3 years in the making and is supported by ICorr, SYBass, ICOMIA, AkzoNobel/ AwlGrip, Jotun, Wrede Consulting, Mankiewicz Coatings/Alexseal, Joop Ellenbroek and others. A pilot RMCI course was recently held where thirteen industry representatives from shipyards, refit yards, paint manufacturers and applicators dedicated 5 days to evaluating the proposed content. Mr Morgan, a past President of the IIMS, one of the joint certificating bodies of the qualification said, “I am delighted to have been asked to address the delegates at the forthcoming International Superyacht Coatings
Conference in Amsterdam. This is recognition of the growing importance of the RMCI qualification and I look forward to updating [delegates] in detail about the programme.”
Spectrum of Coating Topics Specialising in superyacht coating processes and related rules and legislation, ISCC is organised by Amsterdam RAI in association with ICOMIA and the Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss). In addition to the RMCI qualification, the ISCCprogramme will explore and highlight a full spectrum of topics, accompanied by more than 25 international experts from the superyacht coatings industry.
Alexseal Launches 10-Year Summit ALEXSEAL YACHT COATINGS
The inaugural Alexseal Yacht Coatings Summit, held in July in Hamburg, brought together over 40 specialists from the yacht market for seminars, technical discussions and practical workshops. New product developments were presented during the 2-day event, and attendees were given the opportunity to provide valuable feedback to Alexseal’s management and R&D teams. The attendees also had the opportunity to preview a new prototype fairing compound developed for easy sanding, applicator friendliness and smooth application characteristics. Day two encompassed discussions, origins and benefits of future technology from the newest trend in aviation BC/CC (Base Coat/Clear Coat).

Mast Captain of the Shabab Oman II, Issa Ahmed Al-Balushi
Sailing Spirit Stepping onboard the Shabab Oman II is like taking a step back in time – she is a traditional sailing clipper from the golden age of sail. Her narrow hull lines and large total sail area are simply breath-taking. This 21st century clipper can reach greater speeds with her 2,700m2 sail area than with her two Caterpillar C32 engines – 18 knots compared to 11.5 knots.
Close to the Wind Prior to delivery, Damen successfully carried out sea trials in the North Sea. “With a total of 28 sails, and the amazing amount of standing and running rigging involved, it was wonderful to see that everything works smoothly,” comments

Damen Project Manager Arnoud Both. “We have put two years of blood, sweat and some tears into this project – it was such a beautiful moment seeing the ship at sea in full sail. The ship handles well and can sail closer to the wind [than our other STVs] due to design improvements from Dykstra Naval Architects.” Dykstra’s lines plan reflects the spirit of the faster, extreme clippers of the 1850s and 60s and is intended to honor the designers and builders of that era. The sail plan illustrates a lofty, three-masted full rigged ship according to the best traditions of the clipper era.
Back to the Falcon Dykstra Naval Architects has previous experience with designing awesome threemasted sailing vessels. The company’s Photo courtesy of Carlo Borlenghi portfolio also includes the Maltese Falcon: the one-of-a-kind sailing yacht with three free-standing carbon fibre masts that can be rotated to suit the wind direction.

OCEANAIR BOOTH NO.
11.009 METS 2014 Oceanair introduced its leather Venetian blind range with curved aluminium slats. The curved slat accentuates natural light lines and highlights the texture of the leather fabric covering the slat. The benefits of the aluminium slat continue through its inherent strength which offers greater stiffness and structural rigidity. This means that the slats can be longer, covering larger window areas, and can mean the difference between needing one blind or two in a window. These classically simple, English made, Venetian blinds bring together warmth, practical styling and enchanting detail to add the perfect accent to any superyacht interior. The slats create a thinner slat overall when covered in leather (compared to a wooden one). With a smaller overall slat thickness, and in turn, overall blind thickness, this creates a more contemporary, sleeker looking blind. i. www.oceanair.co.uk

WORD ON THE SEA
SYI’s Tom Scott
American Power & stability The United States is flexing its mighty marine muscles and preparing to make a particularly robust appearance at this year’s METS. Industry representation bodies will be making an appearance in Amsterdam, including the National Marine Manufacturer’s Association (NMMA) who is teaming up with the US Superyacht Association (USSA) to form a force representing thousands of companies. I’m looking forward to paying a visit to Seakeeper, who have announced the release of five new gyroscopic stabilisers – the 5, 9, 16, 26 and 35 models. The 35 is of particular interest, having been designed for vessels over 30m long and up to 140t. Seakeeper say that multiple units can be fitted to stabilise even larger vessels. The new models are not only more compact than their predecessors, but also cheaper as a result of the company’s optimisation of the manufacturing process. ABT-TRAC will also be present, no doubt showcasing their newly released products. TRAC Link and eTRAC made their debut in Monaco in September. TRAC Link is an integrated CAN Bus control for TRAC stabilisers, thrusters and auxiliary hydraulic loads, whilst eTRAC is a new electric actuator for TRAC active fin stabilisers.
Quantum, the producers of Zero Speed fin stabilisers and OnAnchor, is also on my list of stands to visit. As is Naiad Dynamics – with offices in the US, UK and the Netherlands, they bridge the continents with their range of motion control and stabiliser systems. Another US-based company I want to see at the show is Palladium Technologies, with their integrated hardware and software solutions, which cover a range of bases, including IT and AV systems as well as monitoring and alarm systems. A power nut at heart, I’m also going to be checking out those providing the power, such as ASEA Power Systems, who will be present with their high performance shore power convertors, ranging from 8-105kVA to 25-750kVA and both Kohler and Northern Lights with their extensive range of generator sets. Do let me know if you’re going to be at METS and we can meet up and have a chat – see you in Amsterdam!
The US is flexing its mighty marine muscles.
