Casey Donahew @ Harry’s by Luke Murray
T
Texas has its very own brand of country music, and it’s no doubt that the red-dirt scene has been on the rise in recent years, with names like Josh Abbott and Randy Rogers hitting the charts and TV screens. Listeners nationwide have taken notice to the special “twang” that only comes from the Lone Star, and a lot of top-shelf talent has been growing here amongst the cedars and the pines. Native to Burleson, Casey Donahew did not always have music on the front of his mind. Spending his younger years growing up on a farm, he took a strong interest in rodeos, particularly team roping. Even though his life is primarily consumed with the band and their music, he still has a passion for his first hobby. “I still like to team rope,” says Donahew on theboot.com. “We find some places where we can get set up and fixed up with some horses on the road. When we go to El Paso, we’ve got some friends out there who have a big arena, so they have horses and steers ready to go when we show up.” It wasn’t until he was here in College Station as a student at Texas A&M that he finally took a strong interest in songwriting and learning to play the guitar. Most musicians have another
performer that they look up to, someone who sparked their initial interest. For Donahew, that performer was none other than country music superstar Garth Brooks. “The thing I was always most enamored with about Garth was that he wrote most of those songs,” says Donahew. “He was just one of those guys who did it all. And he started in Stillwater, not too far from the red dirt scene. You could really take a lot of Garth Brooks songs and put ‘em on a record of mine, and I think it would fit right in.” Casey prides himself on being a consistent songwriter. He has progressed over the release of his four albums, but he sticks to his roots and what he knows when writing new songs. “Hopefully I’ve grown as a songwriter over the past few years, but I don’t try to get too carried away with it; I don’t want to try to be too serious about everything,” says Donahew. “Not every song has to change your life; there also has to be entertainment in the world. And I like to think we provide entertainment with [our] songs.”

just as much a sing-along album as the previous three. “I’m not sure how far we have left to go. Hopefully forever; but you know nothing lasts forever, so I’m always mindful of that and prepared that one day this ride could be over. And I’m pretty proud of everything we’ve accomplished.” Casey has come a long way from his early days of playing acoustic shows at the Fort Worth Stockyards back in 2002. He attributes his band’s success to their loyal fan-base. The main thing a musician or any type of artist needs in order to be successful is to remember why they started. For the Casey Donahew Band, it’s all about the fans. “I think we definitely make music for our fans…we don’t worry about much else except making the fans happy and making ourselves happy.” Casey Donahew Band will be playing at Hurricane Harry’s on October 26.

Halloween is on a Wednesday this year, and considering that’s the middle of the week, there probably isn’t much going on around town. Harry’s knows this, and that's why the venue is hosting a huge bash and a costume contest (that you probably won’t win dressed as a cowboy). The entertainment lineup for Hallows' Eve at Harry's has red dirt artist Stoney LaRue headlining with local country starlet Bri Bagwell opening. For $12, the night includes the entertainment and the prize you might win dressed as a caped crusader or Walking Dead extra. Doors open at 9pm, and if you plan on dancing, remember to wear a costume that won't malfunction on the dance floor or that involves makeup that'll “bleed” onto your sweaty dance partner. LaRue has been said to play “music that combines the rootsy, emotionally honest sound of country with the beer-drinking swagger of heartland rock and a dose of the moody undercurrents of the blues,” according to Mark Deming of Rovi. With a unique voice and rock edge to his music, LaRue heats up dance floors all around the Lone Star and beyond. With her recent single, “Whiskey Tears”, Bagwell has gained fresh momentum in town and on the tour routes she plays frequently. The contestant from CMT's Next Superstar grew up in Las Cruces, New Mexico, but after her run on Superstar, she re-planted her roots right here in C-Stat. She knew how the region cultivates starpower out of locals here, so she localized and is following in the footsteps of Texas country legends such as Robert Earl Keen and Roger Creager—both Aggies. The entertainment might not be Halloween themed, but would you want anything else from Harry's? For more information about Stoney LaRue and Bri Bagwell, visit stoneylarue.com and bribagwell.com. Tickets are available at harrys.bcsclubs.com.
Brian Burke “Chemistry”
Tracii Guns @ Grand Stafford
W
If you’d like to add some Chemistry to your relationship, check this one out.
Brad Paisley “Southern Comfort Zone” This song is just about what it’s like growing up in the South. It could easily be called Texas Comfort Zone.
by Sarah Dean
With ax skills reminiscent of Van Halen and early Aerosmith, Tracii Guns has given music his own flair and emerged as an iconic guitar player over the years. If fate had had its way differently, you wouldn’t immediately recognize the name Slash as the signature guitarist for Guns N’ Roses. And even though the rock guitarist didn’t earn a legacy by the group’s enormous success (Slash replaced him in the 80s), he still is the “Guns” in Guns N’ Roses. The Grand Stafford proudly presents The Tracii Guns League of Gentleman along with the Texas-bred blues artist Randy Pavlock and the innovative pop rock Texas sensation BoJest, on October 27. The League of Gentlemen is just one cookie jar Tracii Guns has had his hand in. Guns has traveled all over the musical map, performing in multiple bands. His associated acts include the rock group L.A. Guns, formed in 1983 by Guns, Axl Rose, and Ole Beich. Axl Rose left the group to join Hollywood Rose, but in 1985, Guns and Rose decided to merge L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose; thus, Guns N’ Roses was born.
Deryl Dodd “Love Around Here” This song is about a family filling each others lives with love and smiles. There’s no better way I could imagine living life. Listen weekdays 3-7pm
Guns only briefly rocked the guitar in Guns N’ Roses before leaving and being replaced by Slash. The short-lived side project, Contraband, Bridges of Destruction (which went on indefinite hiatus), and—for a short time—Poison are all part of Guns’ rockin’ music history. Although the night will crest with Guns as the closer, two other significant groups will be opening. The musical history of Guns is more abundant than Randy Pavlock, but Pavlock’s bluesrock is storied and steeped in rhythm and blues. Crediting music as being his saving grace, Randy has stated “I didn’t choose music, music chose me.” He continues to say that, “Without a doubt, God and music saved my life.” Pavlock is carrying on the great blues tradition. BoJest’s intriguing vocals and stage presence will certainly prepare you for the Stafford’s epic night of music. She brings theatrics into her music by performing a show complete with costume and makeup in the vein of Madonna and Lady Gaga.
Faith Hill “American Heart” Incredibly bland and vanilla. For waiting so long for a new song from her, I was hoping for much much better.

Casting Crowns @ Reed Arena by Luke Murray
N
Not only does Reed Arena serve as the primary home for Aggieland’s own Breakaway Ministries, it is set to host another event of spiritually extraordinary proportions. The Grammy-AwardWinning contemporary Christian group, Casting Crowns, has College Station as a stop on their current tour, and they plan to sell out Texas A&M’s basketball venue. The Atlanta-based group actually got their start in Florida where front-man Mark Hall was the youth pastor at First Baptist Church in Downtown Daytona Beach. It was 1999, and Hall had started the band as a worship and praise group for his church’s youth. In 2001, they relocated to Georgia where they would release two independent albums that boded well in the Atlanta area. The group garnered local praise for their efforts of outreach toward youth and young adult groups, and they would also go on to win awards for “Best Song” and “Best Artist” from a competition in West Palm Beach. In 2003, a man by the name of Mark Miller, better known as the front-man for country act Sawyer Brown, got his hands on a Casting Crowns album. His ears fell in love with the band’s musicality and Mark Hall’s ability to deliver a powerful message through his lyrics and strong vocals. With little deliberation, the band that was not looking for a record label had suddenly found one as they were signed to Miller’s Beach Street Records. Miller brought the band into the studio, along with another contemporary Christian heavyweight, Steve Curtis Chapman, as co-producer. This led to the composing of their self-titled album, Casting Crowns; released that year in 2003. That record sky-rocketed their career and led them to be one of the fastest selling Christian acts in music history. The third single off their debut album, “Voice of Truth”, held a number one billboard spot for fourteen consecutive weeks. Nine years and six albums later, the band has accumulated fourteen Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association, an American Music Award, and an astounding three Grammys. Along with the awards, they have had three albums go platinum with the Recording Industry
Association of America, along with another two that have gone gold, not to mention awards for their live show DVDs. With all the accolades and praise for the praise-driven band, it might be surprising to learn that the members are only Casting Crowns part-time. Four of the members currently hold full-time positions as worship and praise leaders at Eagle’s Landing First Baptist Church in McDonough, Georgia. They primarily tour from Thursday through Saturday; that way, they can be there for Sunday morning and Wednesday evening church services. The bandmates actively minister to their churches youth and help guide them in their own spiritual journeys. “As a youth Pastor with my students, the thing I want them to notice first is their own walk with Jesus – not their Youth Pastor’s or favorite band’s walk with Jesus,” says front-man Mark Hall, who also has two Songwriter of the Year Awards from the Gospel Music Association. “That’s the first step before missions can even happen – they have to develop their own friendship with Jesus. After that, I want them to see they can have a ministry with the people around them. Often, we don’t think we are good enough, worthy enough, or maybe feel we’ve made too many mistakes or we’re not talented enough – but God can use all of us and has called all of us into a ministry.” While the band has received an immense amount of praise for their musical efforts, their primary goal is their ministry. They plan to lead a congregation of Aggies in a one- o f - a kind praise and worship session as they simultaneously minister to everyone in attendance. Casting Crowns will be at Reed Arena on Saturday, October 27. Tickets are available at CastingCrowns.com.

Niblett from 103.1 KISS FM by Chris Zebo
You often hear his voice on 103.1 as he plays your favorite top 40 hits, but you probably don't know much about Niblett, one of Aggieland's most-loved DJs. Let us formally introduce you to him. In our interview, Niblett shares how he got into radio, what songs he likes playing, and some anecdotes about some of the people he's met in his line of work, such as John Mayer and Outkast. We even found out what he's dressing up as for Halloween this year. MW: Tell readers how you got into radio. Did you start on a college station? Go to school for communications or broadcasting? Niblett: I’ve always had a love of radio as a kid. I would call radio stations all the time trying to be on-air. My senior year of high school, I took an internship class. That’s how I got my foot in the door. I interned at 106.1 Kiss FM in Dallas. I started as an unpaid intern and I was bitten by the radio bug. From there, I started to climb the radio ladder.

pg 10 | maroonweekly.com | 10.24.12
After working on-air with other DJs, I decided to branch out and get my own show. That’s what landed me in Aggieland; after working on-air down here, I took 6 months off to graduate from Texas A&M. Still having a love of radio, I got this job at the new 103.1 KISS FM in BCS. I felt like it would be a great challenge and a lot of fun to start a station from
the ground up. Plus, I get to be the boss. MW: Any icons in the industry that you looked up to as you groomed your radio persona? Niblett: Billy the Kidd from 106.1 KISS FM Dallas. He is an incredible talent and works in a major market. But when I first started out, he would take time to talk and to teach me things. In the radio field, that is rare. Billy would involve me in meetings, events, and club gigs. Still, to this day, I can call him up and bounce ideas off him; he always shoots me straight and is there to still teach me. I wouldn’t have become the DJ I am today without his guidance. MW: As an DJ, you get a ton of requests for the same songs. In the past few months, what requests for a song or songs were you like, “Ugh...NOT again!” Niblett: Right at this moment it’s any song from or with Chris Brown. I feel people have forgotten what he did in the past. MW: Just what is it about PSY's “Gangnam Style” that's made it ridiculously popular? And have you played it on the station? Niblett: That song got popular because truly anyone who makes a YouTube video will get 15 minutes of fame. I posted the video on Facebook but fought the urge to play it on-air MW: What's one of your favorite songs in the past month? Niblett: Kreayshawn's “Go Hard” and Big Sean's “Mercy.” MW: You get to meet some pretty cool people in your line of work. Name some of the performers you've met as a jockey? Niblett: I’ve gotten to meet a lot of famous people. Some of my favorites were Pitbull, John Mayer (a very funny guy enjoys practical jokes), Chubby Checker, Andre 3000 from Outkast (he made a point of stating that I don’t dress stylish, yet gave me advice on how to improve my style), Hinder (those guys can party at a whole other level, and I tried to keep up, but it didn’t happen). But my favorite was meeting and hanging with the guys from Bowling For Soup. They have been my favorite band since I was a kid. They even brought me on stage to sing with them at one of their concerts MW: Halloween is just around the corner. If you could pull off any costume this year, what would it be? Niblett: This year I plan on going as Tommy from the movie Tommy Boy.
Rock 103.9’s Halloween Bash @ Grand Stafford Theater by Ike Ntube
Halloween doesn’t exactly fall on the best day this year (being in the middle of the week). The good news about a Wednesday holiday means two weekends to celebrate, and we all know that we’ve celebrated for less reasons. This Friday, the weekend before Halloween, Rock 103.9 and the Grand Stafford Theater are teaming up to bring you a Halloween Bash featuring two groups that can certainly bestow the holiday “spirits” upon you.
Six Gun Sound is a three-piece hard rock/Southern metal band from Houston. There is a very interesting dynamic to this band because their drummer actually is one of the lead singers, along with the band's guitarist (they’re actually brothers, too). Highly influenced by Rush and Pantera, Six Gun Sound—for only three members—sounds more like a symphony of rock, with an intensely rich and thick sound.
The Dirty Wormz from Austin and Six Gun Sound from Houston are coming out to kick off the week of celebrations. The Dirty Wormz blends rap and rock and the group's violent sound and content are very much in line with the holiday. Band members wear masks and put on quite a theatrical spectacle every time they play, so don't go into the concert thinking, “Well that's cool! They dressed up for Halloween!” The band is always dressed for Halloween, even when they play in February.
Considering that there are two weekends to celebrate Halloween this year means that you can vary your partying. This party is sure to be a highlight of the season and a great way to get into the spirit.

Former German WWII POW to Share Stories of Internment in Hearne, TX You may not know this, but only 30 minutes north on Highway 6, in Hearne, Texas, there once was an internment camp with held German prisoners of war during WWII. Camp Hearne, as it was called, was one of more than 600 POW internment camps across America during WWII. Heino Erichsen was interned at the camp as a German prisoner, and on Saturday, October 27, Erichsen will share stories with the genereal public about his time as a POW. Erichsen likes to say he learned what freedom was behind barbed wire in an American POW Camp. Captured as one of Field Marshall Erwin Rommel’s elite Afrika Korps in 1943, Heino spent his time in confinement taking classes, working as a translator, reading a lot of books, and learning what it meant to be an American. When he finally made it home to Kiel, Germany, two years after the war ended, he started working his way back to the USA, to live, ultimately, as an American. Heino has a remarkable story to tell and he will tell it during Camp Hearne’s “Day in the Life…” living history event on October 27th. At Camp Hearne, visitors can take a trip back in time to 1943-1945 and see character actors in American military personnel uniforms, period weapons and communication equipment, some German troops in full uniform, and hear from one man who actually lived the experience. If you have not visited the Camp Hearne Exhibit or you have been waiting for cooler weather to experience the trails to the prisoner-built relics, this is the Saturday to visit. Camp Hearne is located northwest of Hearne just off FM 485. For those approaching on Hwy. 6, turn west at the Loves Truck Stop in Hearne. The event is offered free to the public between 10am-4pm. Visit www.camphearne.com for more information.

The Tradition at Northgate
Coming to college can be a scary thing, especially when moving away from home for the first time. But at the Traditions at Northgate students can not only transition smoothly, they can have a blast by fitting right in to the Traditions at Northgate community. Located off of University, directly across the street from Texas A&M, the Traditions at Northgate offers a home away from home experience that is hard to replicate. The luxuries of a top of the line apartment complex like weekly housekeeping, personal rooms, a full service dining center and so much more make the Traditions at Northgate a desirable place to live, but it really is the close knit ties among the residents, resembling that of a community or family, that puts the complex a cut above the competition. “Personally, I like how everyone knows each other and how we are like a big family,” Luke Yanker, a Traditions at Northgate RA, said. “We have lots of community areas in the building like The Edge Café and a movie

theater, and we have community events regularly,” Yanker said. “We just had a Casino night where there were raffles and giveaways, and every week there is a group that meets in the lobby to go out dancing together.” Having a good time in college is important, but the whole reason students are here is to get an education, and the Traditions at Northgate facilitate a learning environment unlike that of any other apartment complex. With their Academic Success Center, the Traditions at Northgate offer their residents on site personal tutoring each and every night. “We have tutors of various majors that come every night,” Yanker said. “They are available to help us with whatever we need. One night I forgot about an assignment until 11:57a.m., and one of the tutors was able to help me and I ended up getting an A on the assignment.” Don’t just adjust to college life, come enjoy a well rounded college experience with the Traditions at Northgate.

Kappa Kappa Gamma Presents: Kappa Kolor 5K
W
by Ike Ntube
With Halloween parties starting this weekend, does your Halloween costume fit perfectly? Or are you just a little nervous that it might be just a tad too tight? Running a 5K could potentially trick your body into getting rid of that last inch (or maybe your mind into thinking you did).
philanthropy, the Nehemiah Center of Navasota. The Nehemiah Center of Navasota is an after school program with goals of creating a place for children to learn and to develop positive friendships.
A lot of people probably wouldn’t be able to run 3.2 miles on their own, so a structured run could help you pace it out. This Saturday, Kappa Kappa Gamma has you covered.
You can register online until the end of the 24th (there’s a chance you missed it, considering that it’s the day that this story comes out). But don’t fear, you can show up at 8am to register for the race and get everything taken care of before the 9am start time.
Kappa Kappa Gamma is hosting Kappa Kolor 5K. The thing that sets this 5K apart from the others is the color (spelled “kolor” in this instance). As participants complete each kilometer, they get a different color of paint dispersed upon them; the further you go, the more color you achieve. By the end of the race, you’re gonna look like a piece of art!
The Kolor race begins and ends at the Kappa house. For more information on the Kappa Kolor 5K, visit aggiekappa.com.
The paint used is non-toxic and safe, made from tempera powder mixed with cornstarch. You might not want to wear clothes you plan to wear again, however. And for those with allergies, the paint does not contain latex, dairy, casein, egg, gluten, peanut, tree nut or soy, so you’re safe there as well. The most important part of this event is its cause. Proceeds go to Kappa Kappa Gamma’s

Red Wasp Film Festival @ Downtown Bryan
T
by Lauren Rohr
The “buzz” around town lately is all about the 10th anniversary of the Red Wasp Film Festival held in Downtown Bryan. The festival will feature the works of many up and coming auteurs, such as Amanda Feder and Will O’Loughlen, and in addition to film screenings, there will be a workshop for those interested in becoming successful filmmakers. Brazos Writers will join forces with the Red Wasp Film Festival to present a workshop on screenplay writing led by screenwriter Ben Wiggins, who is the founder and Development Executive at AccessFilms.
Join us for
a night out.
Enjoy us for a night in.
Wiggins, a graduate of Rice University and with a Master of Science degree in Sports Management from TAMU, describes the workshop as “an exciting and fast-paced three hours [that] will cover the elements of story in detail” and feature a “discussion on dialogue, subtext, visual description, and technological aids” for screenwriters. The festival has grown substantially since Craig and Carol Conlee started it in 2003. The festival started at the 7F Lodge in Wellborn up until the couple partnered with Brazos Progressives in 2006. They decided Conlee Auctions in Downtown Bryan would be a much better venue for the show. Then in 2008, StageCenter became the festival's home. If you are wondering how the festival got such an unusual name, the couple decided to include some of their “pesky” little friends as part of the entertainment. For years, the couple put on the festival at 7F Lodge in the spring. During the spring, the wasps would return in droves and “bug” their guests. So as a way to make peace between them all, they decided to include the wasps as part of the festival's name. The Red Wasp Film Festival will be held Friday, October 26 and Saturday, October 27 at StageCenter Theatre in Downtown Bryan. Doors open at 6pm each evening, with screenings beginning at 6:30pm. The screenwriting workshop will be held Saturday, October 26, 1:004:00pm at StageCenter. Tickets for the film screenings and workshop will be available at the door. Salsa Dance Night @ Rudder Fountain
O
Over the past month, the university has thrown numerous cultural events to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. As the festivities come to a close, there is one last cherry-topper event you won’t want to miss. On Thursday, October 25, MCS Town Hall, MSC CAMAC, and MSC L.T. Jordan are hosting a free Salsa Dance Night at Rudder Fountain from 7pm-11pm. The night begins with a special dance lesson at 7pm taught by Mambos Entertainment, the people responsible for producing the award-winning salsa nights at the Village in Downtown Bryan. After the lesson, there will be a dance competition to test your new skills, with prizes awarded to dancers who best learn how to salsa, merengue, bachata, and cumbia. Following the dance lesson and competition, San Antonio based salsa band Colao will be performing for all to dance, complete with a canopy of stars overhead and cool fall air to keep your sweating to a minimum. A fine way to not only celebrate the end of HHM, but also a great night to learn something new, to dance, meet new people, hear a great band perform, and to enjoy the cool fall night. And if it, by chance, is hot outside (this IS Texas), you can always hop in the fountain.

Halloween Salsa Dance @ Village Café
S
So, Halloween is on a Wednesday and you've already done the costume thing the Saturday before and you've gotten your partying out of the way. But, it's still Halloween night, and you feel like you should do something festive. Fortunately, you can. On Halloween Eve, the Village Cafe is hosting its regularly scheduled Salsa Wednesdays—except this night of salsa lessons and dancing might have a few zombies and sexy-costumed dancers on the floor. As an incentive to come costumed, the venue is offering all guests free tickets to their weekend salsa party, Salsa Saturdays, for all who come dressed in costume at the door. (Tickets for Salsa Saturdays will never expire and can be used whenever you want.) The Halloween Salsa Dance begins at 8pm with a dance lesson. So even if you dance as awkwardly as a mummy, by the end of the lesson you'll be moving gracefully around the dance floor. Following the lesson, the dance floor opens up to dancing till 1am. If you're going to learn how to dance, admission is $8 at the door at 8pm and includes the night of dancing afterward If you're going to dance only, admission is $5 at the door at 9:30pm. The party goes till 1am and it's all ages; bring ID if you plan to drink. For more information about salsa at the Village, visit mambosentertainment.com.

Seven Psychopaths
Seven Psychopaths does everything Looper does but better, and Looper was already great to begin with. It starts with a hilariously dark introduction to Psychopath No. 1, and then we see Colin Farrell playing a Hollywood writer struggling to write a screenplay called Seven Psychopaths. He wants to avoid violence, because he wants his movie to be lifeaffirming. The only problem is the terr-ific title. How can a movie feature seven psychopaths and be life-affirming? A Buddhist psychopath, maybe? Real-life writer/director Martin McDonagh has found the solution, though. Don’t misunderstand. Seven psychopaths is violent, full of gay slurs, and features four inadequately-defined and quickly-dispatched women characters. It’s like a new version of Pulp Fiction mashed up with Short Cuts and The Limey with a Lost Highway cherry on top, four of the great Los Angeles movies of the ‘90s hanging out together. McDonagh knows his history, which is precisely how he’s able to branch out into new territory; halfway through, Seven Psychopaths takes a breather at a sandy resort where the characters discuss the righteousness of post-war Vietnamese anti-Americanism.
by Brandon Nowalk
And that makes this the second film this year after Moonrise Kingdom transparently inspired by Jean-Luc Godard’s 1965 French New Wave classic Pierrot le fou. Anyone who calls Seven Psychopaths a trifle isn’t paying attention. If getting into the Vietnam War seems absurd for a movie about a screenwriter whose buddy kidnapped a mobster’s prize Shih Tzu, it is and it isn’t. The whole movie is pretty ridiculous, half a shockingly violent modern crime fable and half a meta-Hollywood comedy that maintains the distance necessary to laugh. But by the final act, Seven Psychopaths circles back around to that Buddhist psychopath idea. This is a movie about nonviolent resistance. Christopher Walken’s scam artist tells Farrell, “I ain’t gonna fight, but I ain’t gonna run.” “So what are you gonna do?” He shrugs. “I guess I’m gonna die.”
pg34 34 || maroonweekly.com maroonweekly.com || 10.17.12 10.24.12 pg
Violence only perpetuates the cycle, and running away lets it rage on. To obstruct the machine, he has to stand up against it and risk everything. The movie triples or quadruples down on that idea when the final shootout comes, but the finale has so many tricks up its sleeve that it quenches bloodlust, too. All the joys of filmmaking that animate Argo course through the entirety of Seven Psychopaths. Walken delivers his richest performance since at least The Deer Hunter, all eye fidgets and coiled temper laid bare, like a sidewinder. The cast (including Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell) is so star-studded that the opening vignette with Boardwalk Empire stars plays like a comic dismissal of the small screen. This is big-screen filmmaking, entertainment motivated by serious curiosity. This is cinema.

Most young folks have barely gotten the hang of college by age 19. But, for criminal mastermind Frank W. Abagnale Jr., he was conning people out of millions of dollars before he hit the big 1-9. The real-life tale of Abagnale has been revamped into a musical that New York Magazine has called “A spectacular spectacular!” The OPAS stage presents Catch Me if You Can on October 29 and 30 at 7:30pm.
Perfecting the art of forging checks, Abagnale manages to procure millions and becomes smitten with the lovely Brenda. He is living the good life with the girl of his dreams until his fibs catch the watchful eye of FBI bank fraud agent Carl Hanratty. Hanratty tracks down Frank, but Frank uses his wiles and cunning to escape, only to later apologize for having duped Hanratty. Suddenly, Hanratty realizes that this man is just a boy, and, perhaps, there’s more to him than meets the eye.
A fantastic account which the real Frank Abagnale calls a “story of redemption,” Catch Me If You Can is the truest tale of the biggest fraud. Confronting issues of broken homes and troubled childhoods, Catch Me If You Can reveals all the troubles and foibles of being young, in love… and a con man.
Based on the 2002 film, this musical was created by a group of Tony Award winning all-stars, with Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman (Hairspray) both whipping together a stunning score, dancing choreographed by Jerry Mitchell (Hairspray, Legally Blonde), and director Jack O’Brien (Hairspray, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) at the helm. The musical has received exuberant praise from Variety, which claims the show has “the best new music on Broadway,” along with the Huffington Post, which stated “Catch Me dazzles Broadway! The songs deliver a guilty jolt of pleasure!”
Abagnale, a spry teenager who has run away from home after his parents’ divorce in search of a more sophisticated life, runs into a universal problem people often face when they run away: he was broke. With his pockets empty, he sets his sights on confidence scams to earn a little cash. His scams start off small but eventually evolve into gutsier quests. He poses as a Pan Am pilot (and successfully steals 2.8 million dollars) as well as a Southern doctor from Georgia and a Louisiana lawyer.

The Rocky Horror Show @ The Theatre Company
A
As the spooky Halloween season descends upon us, there is one musical sure to make you shiver with antici…pation. The Rocky Horror Show puts a rock n’ roll spin on the legend of Frankenstein, and the bizarre performance has become one of the greatest cult classics of all time. It’s just a jump to the left and a step to the right to the Theatre Company where it’s being performed for a limited time. To support their Monster Bash Halloween fundraiser, the show will play on October 26 at 8:00pm and October 27 at 8:00pm and again at Midnight. Upon departing a wedding, an innocent, newly engaged couple, Brad and Janet, find themselves with a flat tire stranded in a torrential downpour. They have no choice but to visit the ominous castle in the distance, desperate for help. Nerves in a jitter, the uneasy love birds are met at the door by a hunchbacked handyman named Riff Raff. Confronted with a household of weirdos such as Riff Raff’s sister, Magenta the maid, and the quirky groupie Colombia, Brad and Janet attempt to escape the bizarre home but are stopped by the mad scientist, Dr. Frank N Furter. Dr. Frank N Furter is “a sweet transvestite” who hails from

Transsexual, Transylvania. He invites the still apprehensive couple up to his laboratory to unveil his sexy new creation, the hunky golden-boy Rocky Horror. While Dr. Frank N Furter displays his oiled-up creation, Colombia’s former lover – and the original owner of half of Rocky’s brain – Eddie bolts from the freezer. Before Eddie can escape the castle, Dr. Frank N Furter takes a hatchet to Eddie’s head. Brad and Janet are then shoved off to their separate bedrooms. After a case of mistaken identity leads to infidelity on behalf of both Janet and Brad, Riff Raff reveals that Rocky has escaped. Janet, on the lookout for her fiancé, finds Rocky in the laboratory. Naughty shenanigans ensue. Smelting the accidental humor oft found in B-horror films along with foreboding language, 50’s style rock ‘n’ roll, and the Herculean body-builder flicks of Steve Reeves, Richard O’Brien constructed The Rocky Horror Show. It debuted in London in 1973 and received immediate praise and success. To date, it has received 5 Tony award nominations including one in 1975 for Outstanding Actor in a Musical. The 1975 film adaptation (The Rocky Horror Picture Show) further catapulted Rocky Horror’s following to new heights; it has
become one of the most renowned and financially fruitful midnight movies of all time. Audience participation is necessary. With a score of catchy warbles, attendees are welcome to sing and dance along to celebrated favorites such as the high-energy “Time Warp” or the seductive “Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch Me.” For further entertainment, The Theatre Company is offering $5 prop bags which include confetti, toilet paper, balloons, party favors, a party hat, rubber glove, playing cards, newspaper, instructions and a cue sheet. Nothing short of kinky, The Rocky Horror Show is not suitable for anyone under the age of 18. Rocky Horror virgins can visit the official Rocky Horror fan site (rockyhorror.com) for tips on what to expect during the show. Tickets (single show or season) are available online at theatrecompany.com. Costumes are welcome.
