APP REVIEW
FREE
We all know how difficult it is to stay in touch with friends and family who are traveling or live overseas. Even with such savvy technology, keeping in contact with distant relatives can be a challenge and costly. There are a number of messaging apps out there, but maybe it’s time to do some early spring e-cleaning and download WhatsApp to be your one stop shop messaging app. WhatsApp has endless features, including texts, group texts, calls, video chats, photo sharing and more. One of the best aspects of this app is there are no hidden fees. It’s completely free! No longer do you need to pay per minute on a call or buy a pricey international plan. WhatsApp has made staying in contact with loved ones simple, as it should be. A few other parts that make up WhatsApp are its end to end encryption, keeping your info safe, and its availability on your laptop. Whether you’re standing in the middle of the Sahara desert or in the comfort of your home, it’s time to connect through WhatsApp.
THE GRINCH
By Tyra Harris
MOVIE REVIEW At some point in childhood, Dr. Seuss was everyone’s favorite author. The prolific author had multiple classic children’s tales from “Cat in the Hat” to “Green Eggs and Ham” to “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” Perhaps the most relevant of his books at the moment (and every holiday season) is “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” The 2000 live-action film seemingly plays in loop on network television every December. 18 years later, Universal Pictures has released another Grinch film, this one in animation.
The plot of this film follows the same sequence as the children’s book and previous Grinch films which we’re acquainted with. In the land of Whoville, a green and fury creature named The Grinch (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) lives with his only friend, a dog named Max, in an isolated cave. He encounters a young girl named Cindy Lou Who (Cameron Seely), whom he tells to speak to Santa in person about her mother’s hectic work schedule. The Grinch, who was raised an orphan, spitefully decides to “steal Christmas” from the residents of Whoville. This film might be terrific to the young generation of kiddos who’ve yet to become exposed to Jim Carey’s iconic Grinch character. To older audiences, “The Grinch” doesn’t offer anything more appealing than the last Grinch film. Nevertheless, it’s a solid holiday film perfect for the whole family.
ALBUM REVIEW
By Sarah Matthews
The sophomore album, “Suncity,” for R&B singer, Khalid, was released in October of 2018. Receiving praise and recognition for his debut album, Khalid had a lot to follow up on. “Suncity” completely lives up to the heart and soul of Khalid’s roots. The young singer from El Paso, Texas, shows his diversity in vocal abilities. He seamlessly weaves in elements of pop into his heavily R&B influenced style. The album itself cohesively compiles the singer’s experiences with love, growth, and his vigor for life. ARTIST: Khalid ALBUM: Suncity
Khalid has come far in his career and his versatility since his breakout song, “Location” in 2016. “Suncity” demonstrates his range and ability to effectively mix somber, heartfelt songs with upbeat, fun, pop songs. Fans of Coldplay and The Weekend will love “Suncity.” Enchantingly beautiful and catchy, this album sets the bar high for the talented Khalid.

NAUGHTY OR NICE TOUR AT H U R R I C A N E H A R R Y ’S It’s that time of year again. Trees are lit and on display. Malls are filled with shoppers trying to find the perfect gift. Stockings are hung by the chimney with care. And that man from the North Pole is finalizing his “Naughty or Nice” list. Of course, he’s not the only one with such a list, and Aggieland will soon be visited by a couple of jolly performers when Parker McCollum and Koe Wetzel visit Hurricane Harry’s on Wednesday, Dec. 5. The stop is part of the two act Naughty or Nice Tour, which kicked off on Dec. 3 and runs through Dec. 13. McCollum and Wetzel will hit up eight venues across the Lone Star State as they fill crowds with holiday cheer in their own unique way. McCollum, sometimes considered a child protégé in country music, first started playing at the age of 16 in hometown venues. The Houstonarea native relocated to Austin for college, where he continued to perform local gigs before releasing his first single in 2013 at the age of 21. This first studio album, “The Limestone Kid,” was released in 2015, propelling his career even further toward success.

Wetzel, an East Texas native, first picked up a guitar at the age of 12, but it took awhile for music to become his focus. Wetzel’s success on the football and baseball fields in high school led him to Tarleton State University in Stephenville, where he began his college career as part of the Texan football team. However, in 2012, he dropped out of school to focus on this true passion: music. He formed a band, Koe Wetzel & the Konvicts, and released an EP in June 2012. McCollum and Wetzel complement each other in many ways, most notably vocally. Listening to the song “Love” on Wetzel’s album “Noise Complaint” showcases just how well the two mesh. And you couldn’t ask for a better venue to see this show. Harry’s consistently brings a fantastic crowd and an amazing environment. The Naughty or Nice Tour is going to be a must see. Tickets available on the Hurricane Harry’s website. http://harrys.bcsclubs.com

The one thing that can always bring people together is music. On December 15, the Grand Stafford Theater in Bryan brings you a Legacy Fails and Bonnie Blue reunion, uniting these bands and many special guests for a remarkable evening of entertainment.
Station. Founded by Bradley Churchman–guitarist and singersongwriter, and Jeremy Mayr–drummer, Bonnie Blue has a talented lineup of musicians that have the skill to successfully play multiple genres. Since Bonnie Blue believes that it is important to pay homage to artists of the past, the band has a sound that encompasses old-fashioned rock, country, soul and blues. Bonnie Blue seeks inspiration from a variety of bands, including The Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, and Widespread Panic. Bonnie Blue has a strong fan base in the Southeast and has a rapidly growing fan base in the Southwest. In June, 2017, Bonnie Blue released their debut album “No Lookin’ Back” with the first song on their album, “Memphis Belle,” enticing listeners with a smooth organ for a little soulful rock.
Rock enthusiasts listen up! Legacy Fails is a metal rock band that knows how to take rock to the next level. This band blends rock with heavy metal through guttural screams, a strong emphasis on the base and drums, and a leading electric guitar that provides listeners with a theatrical performance. Legacy Fails is a highly instrumental band with less focus on the vocals. This is noticeable through the precision each musician portrays with their instrument. Legacy Fails makes each performance unique with their attention grabbing, enticing music. On February 2, 2018, Legacy Fails released their debut album, “You Were a Ghost,” which made fans crave more. PL AN YOUR UPCOMING NUP TIALS WITH EPOCH CO+ EVENTS
With the holiday season upon us, there’s a good chance you could find yourself planning or receiving the wedding proposal of your dreams! This time of year rivals Valentine’s Day as the most popular season for engagements. And after the big “YES!” moment, couples will need someone to plan and/or coordinate their big day, and Heather Johnson, owner of EPOCH CO+ Events, knows just what Aggieland is looking for to make those wedding dreams come true. For over 5 years, Johnson has planned, coordinated, styled, and designed weddings all over Texas, but says Brazos Valley weddings are “one of a kind” due to the “unifying” spirit of Aggieland. “We completely understand when someone wants a white (12th Man) towel exit, or puts more emphasis on Aggie ring images than their wedding band images. There isn’t any other place on Earth, in my opinion, as rich in tradition as Bryan/ College Station.” A praised, experienced professional, Johnson’s work has recently been featured in the esteemed bridal publication, “Brides of Houston.” Understanding the emotional charge of weddings, this certified wedding planner finds the work rewarding, saying that it is “profound” for “someone to come to you and fully trust in your abilities to carry out their wishes and
needs on what will likely be one of the top five most significant days of their life.” If perplexed with the decision to hire a wedding planner, Johnson wants couples to keep in mind that certified, experienced wedding planners are career specialists, just as other respected professions. “You wouldn’t hire a mechanic to diagnose a cold,” she says. There are incentives for hiring a wedding planner, particularly with EPOCH CO+ Events. Johnson says, “There are occasional tense situations that we are well versed in handling—diffusing overbearing relatives and wedding party drama. There are definitely times we have to act as a therapist, and it’s nice to have a non-biased person in the mix for tricky family situations,” Johnson says. EPOCH CO+ Events offers a variety of planning and design packages for couples, and customized packages are also available. BALLET BRAZOS “THE NUTCRACKER” By Laurel Butts
Christmastime is a season when the winter darkness and festive lights conjure images of sugar plum fairies, toy soldiers, dancing snowflakes, and even a nutcracker who comes to life. What better way to enjoy the wonder and delight of the holiday season than experiencing the ballet that inspired those images? Ballet Brazos brings the seventh annual production of the “The Nutcracker” to Rudder Auditorium at Texas A&M University on Saturday, December 8 at 2 p.m. for a matinee and at 6 p.m. for an evening performance. Ballet Brazos considers the annual production of “The Nutcracker” its main performance, according to Janét Falcone, Vice-president of Ballet Brazos. “Our hope,” Falcone says, “is that the entire audience will be thrilled and impressed by the sets, props and beautiful costumes of the production.” These dedicated dancers have been rehearsing for over three months, and all that hard work culminates in a ballet that is both grand and delightful, perfectly capturing the Christmas spirit.
by Destiny Turner
Falcone says, “It’s a very intense and condensed schedule, but the excitement grows until the big day arrives. Since we are a ballet company, all must be actively enrolled in ballet classes at their preferred studio.” Ballet Brazos is a volunteer-based organization, meaning that each dancer’s family volunteers to help with operations surrounding promotion, rehearsals and performances, and many of the performers pay to audition and perform. All of this offsets the many associated costs of the production. Falcone explains, “‘The Nutcracker’ is our main focus and source of revenue, as well as gracious and important donations and support from local sponsors and businesses.”
18 MAROON WEEKLY // Dec 5, 2018 // MAROONWEEKLY.COM
In addition to all the talent and hard work of our local ballet corps, Ballet Brazos invited two guest artists from the New York City Ballet to perform. Ashley Laracey will dance as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Andrew Veyette as her Cavalier. Additionally, Falcone says, “We will have two guests coming from the Dallas area.” The majority of other dancers are from around the Brazos Valley and Texas. Tchaikovsky’s powerful compositions along with remarkable sets and costumes are what keep ballet fans returning to this Christmas classic year after year. In fact, Falcone considers the score “so well known, I’d bet many will leave humming their favorite themes.” Directed by Suzanne Moreau and Diana Wilcox, with Katy Ellison serving as artistic advisor, each component of the two-act performance has been thoughtfully planned and executed, and audiences can expect to be whisked away by the wonder of it all. Falcone provides a glimpse of that wonder in her description of the famous snow scene: “The Prince and Clara travel to the beautifully serene Land of Snow to meet the Snow Queen and her sparkling corps de ballet that drift and shimmer, even as the snow begins to fall from the sky.” Falcone concludes,“I sincerely hope that each member of the audience will simply lose themselves for a bit of time to the magic that is ‘The Nutcracker.’” Come enjoy the magical experience of Ballet Brazos’ “The Nutcracker” just in time for the Christmas season. Tickets may be purchased at the MSC box office or at the Ballet Brazos website. The price range, depending upon seating location, is from $8 children’s tickets to between $15, $20, and $30 for adults. Parking is available for $5 cash at the University Center Garage, for the hourly rate at Cain Garage, or for purchase in advance at https://tamu. pmreserve.com. This ballet appeals to all ages—even Scrooge himself wouldn’t be able to stay away! http://balletbrazos.org
