APP REVIEW

FREE

You know that expensive sweater you wore a couple times but now sits in your closet, unworn? I bet you wish there was a way someone else could enjoy it as you intended. Well, there is! Poshmark is an app that allows anyone to buy and sell their clothing and shoes, quick and easy and for the price you pick. After downloading the app and creating an account, you are able to personalize your profile and add as many listings as you’d like. Let’s say you have a pair of gently used Nike tennis shoes still in pristine condition. Just post them at your prefered value and then wait for someone to buy. It’s that simple. When someone buys something from you, just pop it in a box, (any box will work), print off the provided shipping label and send it on its way! Poshmark has been active since 2011 and is headquartered in Redwood, CA. Approximately four million people nationally sell with Poshmark, and some people even label this as their full time job. The site was created to sell clothing, shoes, jewelry, swimsuits, bags and accessories. It’s best to sell only these items, as people come to this app looking for these specific products. You can sell used or new, and you can bargain for a lower price. With over 25 million items to search through on the app and 5,000 brands, you may not only find yourself as a seller but a buyer, too. You can find some killer deals through the app. Be sure to do a little digging before buying something full price at a department store. It might seem overwhelming to try to hunt through all the choices, but Poshmark has set it up to narrow your search for you. To prevent people from selling things that don’t match the description, the buyer is able to rate the item when received. Make sure to take photos of what you’re sending as you package it up for your defense in case someone attempts to say it is not as described. What are you waiting for? Download the app today and become a true Posher!

BIRD BOX

By Justin Walker

MOVIE REVIEW Horror films are far from a new concept. It feels like a new movie with terrorizing undertones is released each week. But 2018 saw a shift in the storytelling aspect of horror films. Instead of focusing on the brutality or maximizing the screams, movies made the story of survival the priority.

One such film is the Netflix original “Bird Box.” What starts out as a typical day in the life of Malorie Hayes, played by Academy Award winning actress Sandra Bullock, turns into an all out nightmare as everyone around her begins to commit suicide. After finding safety in a house shut off from the world, Hayes and other survivors try to understand what could be causing the strange occurances, as well as how to continue living in their new situation. The film takes a much different approach than most horror flicks, as it does not reveal what the entity causing the suicidal behavior ever looks like. Instead, audiences are left in wonder as character after character succumbs to their untimely fate. That also allows for the storytelling to develop, which “Bird Box” does very well. The film flashes back and forth from the start of the deadly events to five years later, where only Hayes and two small children can be seen. The flashbacks help break up any slow points in the film and gives substance to each timeline by complementing the events in both. The acting, highlighted by Bullock’s performance, is spectacular, as is production. While it may not go down as the greatest film ever made, it certainly serves its purpose to entertain audiences.

ALBUM REVIEW Searching for music that moves you in more ways than one? Well, don’t panic because

By Juniper LeValley

Panic! at the Disco’s latest album, “Pray for the Wicked,” will answer your prayers. Released in June 2018, “Pray for the Wicked” debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and features several hit singles, such as “High Hopes” and “Say Amen (Saturday Night).” Upon its release, “Pray for the Wicked” earned 180,000 album sales, representing “the biggest week for an alternative rock album in 2018,” according to Billboard. Serving as Panic! at the Disco’s sixth studio album, “Pray for the Wicked” differs from the band’s previous albums in that it strays from the group’s notorious rock style. Bold beats, striking choruses and brass instrumental influence result in a rather animated aesthetic, typical of the pop genre. Typical of all Panic! at the Disco albums, powerful lyrics uncover a truth to be told.

ARTIST: Panic! at the Disco ALBUM: Pray for the Wicked

Brendon Urie, lead singer of Panic! at the Disco, exposes listeners to the unforgiving depths of fame and fortune he has experienced throughout his career. “Dying in LA” and “Hey Look Ma, I Made It” are two songs in which listeners gain a deeper understanding of Urie’s grievances concerning stardom. Serving as the final track in “Pray for the Wicked,” “Dying in LA” suggests that Urie may be in need of prayer himself. Perhaps serving as the anthem of this album, “High Hopes” is illustrative of Urie’s adversity throughout the depths of his career. All 11 tracks featured on the album are guaranteed to enhance your workout, your night out, or even your commute to and from work. Each song presents a take on Urie’s captivating career and life, providing listeners with “High Hopes” for theirs as well.

LISTEN UP! Metalheads and non metalheads alike: What’s cooler than hearing a guitar riff or a pounding bass? Feeling it! Come out to the Grand Stafford Theater on Jan 26 to support live music locals Wellborn Road with KHAN, Iron Slut, and Snake Skin Prison. The Grand Stafford Theater welcomes Wellborn Road back, a southern metal band originally formed in College Station in 2005. The group consists of Jose Diaz on bass, Tyler Tracy on guitar, Scott Emanis on vocals, and recent addition Phillip Pound on drums. They’ve worked their way up from just a group of friends getting together to play some shows to recording albums and performing with live bands from all around the state. Tyler and Scott were friends since they grew up alongside one another in Kingswood, Tx. And even with Scott in the Navy and Tyler working for Texas A&M, they’d still manage to meet up and practice songs that Tyler would write. Eventually they started performing shows and now have a fan squad known as the “Brew Crew.” Their first album “Home” was released in 2008 and their latest release is called “From Silence to Strength.” These boys will be collaborating with Snake Skin Prison, a hillbilly hard rock group from Austin, KHAN, a metalcore band from Sherman, Texas, and Iron Slut, a stoner rock group from the B/ CS area. You can keep up with all of these Texas rockers on social media, primarily

StageCenter Theater Presents:

WHITE R A B B I T, RED RABBIT Picture this: It’s your first day at your job, one where you have no boss, no office and no previous experience in the field. Oh, and you also don’t know what your responsibilities are.

By Justin Walker

There’s no director, no set and no rehearsals. Instead, the lone actor takes the stage without having previously seen the script. It’s a spectacular approach to a play, but the true story is in the play’s origins. Soleimanpour is not allowed to leave his native country of Iran, due to refusing to take part in military service, a requirement of all Iranian men. His isolation was the inspiration for creating “White Rabbit, Red Rabbit,” which he said began as a nightmare he had many years ago.

Sound like something you’d wanna do? Well that’s exactly what eight actors will experience as the StageCenter Theatre presents “White Rabbit, Red Rabbit.” The play, created by Iranian writer Nassim Soleimanpour, is a complete surprise to the audience as well as the performer who takes the stage.

16 MAROON WEEKLY // Jan 23, 2019 // MAROONWEEKLY.COM

The play walks the line between a comedy and a drama, and has starred several big names, including Whoopi Goldberg, Nathan Lane, Martin Short, Cynthia Nixon and Wayne Brady. Unlike typical theatrical performances where the audience is expected to turn off all electronic devices, “White Rabbit, Red Rabbit” encourages their use. Soleimanpour included his email address in the script for audience members to send him photos and videos of the performance. As with previous renditions of the play, each showing at the StageCenter Theatre will have a different actor. Therefore, each performance will have its own style and voice, which adds to the excitement the play generates. The play will be performed Jan. 25 and 26, and Feb. 1 and 2, at 7 and 9 p.m. each night. Tickets to each individual show costs $15. Those intending to see both shows in a single evening can purchase night passes for $25. And if you are a true fan of the play, tickets for all eight performances can be purchased for $80. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to experience a unique and fascinating approach to theater! To purchase tickets or for the upcoming play schedule, consult the StageCenter Theatre website.
