MOVIE REVIEW Biographies may not hype you up the way weekend vibes might, but picture yourself up front and center at one of the biggest and most renowned rock concerts of all time without actually having to leave your seat. This biographical movie isn’t just about anybody but that somebody of a Rock n’ Roll legend and inspiration, Freddie Mercury and the iconic band “Queen.”

The title of the film is dedicated to Queen’s most popular hit single released in 1975, which has now become the 20th century’s most streamed song and one of the greatest rock songs of all time. “Bohemian Rhapsody” delves into the nooks and crannies of the life of Freddie Mercury (played by Rami Malek), the lead singer for the band who many might not have known too well before this film. Born to Parsi parents from India, the British singer had much adversity to overcome in his personal life aside from his musical career. He faced some hardships that are characteristic of most struggling artists, including substance abuse, troubles of the heart, loneliness, and his sexuality, but also the burden and cost of all the fame. The film leads up to what most believe was the zenith of Mercury’s career as well as for classic Rock n’ Roll- This was the 1985 Live Aid show featuring the one and only “Queen” with Mercury hailing as their angel. The high profile sensation gave a show like none other, and the film does an incredible job in replicating the slightest details and treasured moments of that performance. Actor Rami Malek is credited for his portrayal of Mercury and the film has been nominated for five Academy Awards in varying aspects of its production. And with what it lacks in conciseness, it makes up for in quality. This is one to watch over and over again for years to come.

Winner of season 3: The Voice, singer-songwriter, Cassadee Pope comes out from hiding and takes the spotlight with her latest album, “Stages,” released on Feb 1.

Since taking home the victory and making her debut as a solo artist, Pope has certainly made her mark on country music. In 2013, Pope’s “Wasting All These Tears” rose to the top of the Billboard country charts. Her hit single, “Think of You” was nominated for Best Country Duo/Group Performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards and earned Pope her first number one on the Hot Country Songs chart. Her latest album “Stages” features eleven songs that are full of bubbly beats and lyrics worth listening to. But there’s also a range of songs here: from the lighter side to a bit darker, Pope covers it all. She worked to create songs for every period of a relationship, from perfect beginning to unfortunate end to moving on. “Stages” moves the listeners through the different courses of a relationship as it develops and demonstrates the reality of what happens when it doesn’t. Fall into Pope’s latest album and experience her full range of vocals, happiness, and heartache.

MUSIC Get ready, y’all, there’s a brand new country artist in Texas, and it doesn’t hurt that he’s an Aggie! It’s only been a year since Haddock began his singing career, but his popularity has skyrocketed. He most recently added on a full band with four guys, and they will perform together for the first time at The Tap on Saturday, February 9. Brayden Zink will open at 9 p.m. and Haddock will follow, and there’s no cover charge. The night will include his full debut album, “First Rodeo,” some covers to sing along to, and some new tracks that are yet to be released. Haddock says, “Come out and expect a high energy show!” There will be plenty of merchandise available as well. Texas A&M student during the week and a talented performer on weekends, Haddock’s music career doesn’t have the cliché story of playing guitar since he was two, but he comes pretty close. At 14, after seeing Kenny Chesney and Eric Church perform, Haddock set his mind to it and learned guitar. Fairly new to the country music world, Haddock’s songs are co-written with good friend Ben Tyler Johnson. Haddock explains why he enjoys co-writing, “I like co-writing better because it broadens the horizon. I could write a line and tie a meaning to it, while my co-writer may pull in a different perspective and change the dimension of the

song.” Haddock enjoys having different stories combine into a song, “It makes the song more relatable, instead of it being all about me.” Being a student and full time performer gets tough, and Haddock says it’s difficult sometimes to balance his time, but he works really hard in school as well as in his music. “I’ve learned this business goes up really fast but it also goes down really fast, and school is important to me as well.” Sounds like some pretty wise words.

By Juniper LeValley Temperatures continue to fall, but spirits will rise as country music playing guitar and writing songs during his time as a student at fans witness Casey Donahew with Chris Colston at Hurricane Texas A&M. After transferring to The University of Texas at Arlington Harry’s nightclub in College Station on Feb. 8 from 9 p.m.- 12 a.m. shortly after, Donahew and his then-girlfriend/future wife Melinda traveled across Texas to witness Green, Randy Rogers and Cross Since his first stage appearance in the fall of 2002, Casey Donahew Canadian Ragweed in action. Donahew expresses that “it was a has awed country music fans with his authenticity as both a way into the industry,” and it enabled him to gain a newfound singer and songwriter. An east Texas native, Colston’s music is influenced by idols such as Lyndard Skynard, The Allman Brothers, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. His 2018 EP album, “Gone,” reached a half-million streams on Spotify a few months after its release. Describing his style as “gritty Texas roots combined with a little blues and rock n’ roll,” attendees are guaranteed to enjoy this up-and-coming country sensation. T.V. and films can also portray a false reality, so it’s comforting to see a show with people who struggle with real life problems and don’t look like supermodels while dealing with them.

Built in 1924 by Roger Q. and Nina Heard Astin, the Astin Mansion is a glorious display of the 1920s grand style. With wooden floors, a marvelous winding staircase and a breath-taking chandelier, the mansion is the place to be for this extraordinary night. Couples can experience a heavenly five-course dinner in the flicker of candlelight. With your choice of appetizing Braised Beef Short Rib with Creamy Polenta, Pan-seared Fresh Gulf Fish filet, or Root Vegetable Risotto, this dinner is one sure to make your mouth water.
