APP REVIEW
FREE
Have you ever heard someone complain about how well they are sleeping? No way, right? Well, we’re here to tell you that hope for feeling refreshed when you wake up is one app away. The app “Sleep Cycle” was released almost a decade ago and continues to lead the way into dreamland. There are countless ways to get better sleep, but this app takes a slightly different approach. Maybe it’s not all about the routine before bed but how your body reacts to your alarm clock in the morning. Throughout the night, we go through different stages of sleep. Ranging from light to deep, our bodies move more or less based on the stage we are in, which the app is able to detect. The app’s goal is to help you wake up feeling revitalized. To help set some expectations, this app is an alarm and sleep monitor. Your phone simply needs to be plugged-in close to your bed, and the app is then able to analyze your sleep based on the sounds and vibrations of your movement. All of this results in the most prominent feature of the app, its ability to wake you up in light sleep, thus defeating morning grogginess. Other features include sleep tracking, sleep aid, heart rate, morning moods and more. It’s clear from all the positive reviews that we’re not the only ones that appreciate Sleep Cycle. This quite possibly could be our dream app!
BlacKkKlansman
by Tyra Harris
MOVIE REVIEW Prolific screenwriter and director Spike Lee has released his latest
cinematic masterpiece, “BlackKkKlansman.” As in most of his films, Lee sheds light on untold stories of everyday black Americans in this film based on a true story. “BlackKkKlansman” follows Colorado Springs’s first black police detective, Ron Stallworth (John David Washington), as he poses as a white racist interested in joining the Ku Klux Klan. Via phone calls throughout the nine month operation, Stallworth manages to develop a close relationship with former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke, played by Topher Grace. Stallworth’s in-person appearances with the Klan are made by fellow undercover detective, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver). Together, they work to stop the planned violent and threatening altercations of the KKK before they occur. Though $15 million is a relatively small budget for Hollywood films, production designer Curt Beech made sure the production value was anything but cheap. In my viewing, this was most evident in the nightclub scene, where the colorful lighting perfectly captured the variety of light to dark brown skin tones of the actors. The film surprisingly has several comedic moments, though the audience’s laughter seemed apprehensive. “BlacKkKlansman” also makes numerous obvious parallels to today’s political climate, concluding with a memorial to Charlottesville, Va. car attack victim Heather Heyer. “BlacKkKlansman” isn’t another propaganda-filled media ploy. Lee does not attempt to influence viewers’ political or social ideologies but instead recounts the brave story of a man viewers of all creeds can revere—an American hero.
ALBUM REVIEW It’s been over four years since Jason Mraz last released a studio album, but the wait was well worth it. Mraz’s sixth album, “Know,” dropped on August 12, and it should be no surprise that it’s one of the hottest albums out, peaking at number nine on the Billboard Top 200.
by Justin Walker
“Know” is inspired by love letters Mraz wrote to his wife, and each track shows it. Uplifting and heartfelt words combined with his classic style of soothing music makes for a very moving listen. Two pre-released singles, “Have It All” and “Unlonely,” gains listeners a preview of the inspirational love story this album tells. With upbeat sounds and perfectly matched lyrics, these two songs highlight what one partner wants for the love of their life.
ARTIST: Jason Mraz ALBUM: Know RELEASED: Aug 10, 2018
“More Than Friends” couples the melodic voice of Mraz with the airiness of Meghan Trainor. In a story of two friends who want to take the next step in their relationship, the harmonies of Mraz and Trainor can be felt on a physical and emotional level. There’s not a bad song on this ten-track album. Mraz managed to take his love for his wife and share it in a way that will resonate with listeners everywhere. “Know” is definitely a must hear.

Throw on your boots, grab your hats, and mosey on down to 313 College Ave to Hurricane Harry’s and dance the night away! Hurricane Harry’s offers guests a western experience and a night full of non-stop music on a huge dance floor. Harry’s is legendary for its live bands, country music and fun environment. This country nightclub welcomes guests 18 and up with a valid ID, and offers special two dollar drinks and three dollar shots for any responsible adult 21 and over. The doors to Harry’s typically open every Thursday through Saturday from 9 p.m. - 2 a.m., but don’t you worry—at 8 p.m. on Friday, September 7, Hurricane Harry’s will be open for the performance of special guest Wade Bowen! This West Texas native will be performing some of his greatest hits, and you have the opportunity to witness it. Bowen is a Texas country and Red Dirt singer from Waco, Tx. In his younger years he studied public relations and marketing at Texas Tech University, but that was not his dream. While in college Bowen saw what it was like to perform his own music with his band West 84. Eventually, Bowen graduated and left the group to become a solo artist. Once he went solo, he released his first album Try Not to Listen in 2002, which many Texans greatly enjoyed.

by Destiny Turner
In the years following, he became a well-respected artist because of his persistence and hard work. This allowed his music to flourish outside Texas state lines and into new territory. Over the next few years, Bowen then went on to release a number of albums with lyrics that brought some listeners to tears with heartfelt emotion and made others smile. In 2004, Bowen released The Blue Light Live album, in 2006 he released Lost Hotel, in 2008 If We Ever Make It Home. In 2014, Bowen joined forces with Randy Rogers of the Randy Rogers Band and wowed country music with their high-energy album, Hold My Beer. As Bowen became a seasoned singer-songwriter and recording artist, he realized that he needed to be pushed in his career like he’d never been pushed before. Stepping out of his comfort zone led to the creation of his 2018 album, Solid Ground, which was released February 9, 2018. With Solid Ground, Bowen sang an ode to Texas. So remember, on September 7, at 8 p.m., you have the chance to see Wade Bowen performing his songs live at Hurricane Harry’s!

New Group for Local Artists Bryan Contemporary Artists
By Josh Shelton
Bryan has a new group for local artists looking to network and exhibit their work. Bryan Contemporary Artists - BCA seeks to connect energetic artists in the community. They hope to collaborate on pop-up shows every couple of months, coinciding with Third Thursday Art Steps.
including The Village Cafe, where some of the group’s planning and networking meetings will be held. In addition to organizing exhibitions, the group also hopes to facilitate peer critique and collaboration. For the latest updates on the group, go to their Facebook group at “Bryan Contemporary Artists - BCA.”
Like many great stories, it started over coffee at Harvest Coffee Bar. The founders, Lisa Urban and Sabrina Hegefeld, saw a need for an organization to help new artists. Artists with edgier, modern styles (particularly younger artists and transplants) might struggle to establish a presence in the thriving artistic community of Downtown Bryan. “It needs to happen,” Urban said. “So why don’t we make it happen?”
Whether you’re creating, appreciating, or buying art, Downtown Bryan has a lot to offer. Back in 2014, the area was recognized as the “Downtown Bryan Cultural District” by the Texas Commission of the Arts. Several art organizations are doing great work in BCS.
Lisa Urban graduated from Kansas State University, and she’s the K-12 art teacher at St. Joseph Catholic School. Sabrina Hegefeld graduated from Sam Houston State University, and her artwork is currently available at Market 1023. Both artists have been featured in local exhibits as well as elsewhere in Texas. Bryan Contemporary Artists - BCA exhibited their first show at the Purple Turtle in August. Seven artists displayed four or five pieces each, mostly paintings and mixed media work, with one artist displaying prints of fashion design work. While an established art scene can be intimidating, it’s important to have platforms where new voices can join the discourse. A number of downtown Bryan businesses have already expressed their support,

The Brazos Valley Art League meets regularly and offers scholarships to local high school graduates. The Arts Council of the Brazos Valley has a bigger umbrella, promoting literature, history, music, theater, and more. Art Reaching Teens, an Arts Council program, provides opportunities to youths on probation and inside juvenile detention centers. Through the Arts Council, Bryan and Navasota offer Artist in Residence programs with free housing for a year and six months, respectively. On West 31st Street and across town, you can see the work of local talent like the owner of Arsenal Tattoo and Design, Cliff Collard, and artist-sonographer Sarah Blackmon. If you’re a modern artist, looking to connect with others in the community, or if you’re a business owner looking to exhibit local artwork, check out Bryan Contemporary Artists - BCA on Facebook. They’re interested in finding more places to exhibit work in Bryan, and they may expand into College Station in the future.

Kolache Festival in Caldwell
Do you have an appetite for sweet pastries and cultural history? Check both of those off your list with a trip to “The Kolache Capital of Texas.” On Sept. 8, Caldwell is hosting the 34th annual Kolache Festival celebrating Czech heritage. Live music, a car show, quilts, and a 5K are just some of the attractions. Festivities begin on Friday, Sept. 7 with a dinner of Slovacek sausage and kraut, plus traditional music and dance. Tickets for the dinner must be purchased in advance at the Citizens State Bank in Caldwell. The main event starts at 9 a.m. with the crowning of Miss Kolache Festival Burleson County. A parade of costumes and dancers will keep things lively until the kolache eating contest at 11 a.m. Musical performers include The Czechaholics, The Moravians, Shiner Hobo Band, and the Original Kolache Festival Band. Of particular interest in BCS, the Moravians Polka Band includes a few Aggies. Professional bakers and non-professionals will compete in the state and county Kolache Bake Show. The rest of us will enjoy comparing the work of more than 40 food vendors. There will also be more than 200 vendors of arts and crafts. The Kolache Krunch 5K begins at 7:30 a.m., hosted by the Burleson County Aggie Moms Club. The quilt show will be on display Friday and Saturday at the Caldwell Civic and Visitors Center. Since the 1840s, the Czech people have helped to shape the Brazos Valley. Texas has the largest Czech-American population of any state, probably because we’ve always had the best kolaches!

Tailgating Tips Waking up in a college town on a Saturday morning in the fall is like waking up on Christmas morning, only better. You can feel it in the air: it’s time for football. And while the game may be the headliner, the tailgate is the opening act. There are many ways to tailgate, but here’s a few tips everyone can benefit from. SUNSCREEN The sun seems to always be blazing hot on Saturdays in Aggieland. Even if you’re just attending the game, it’s smart to protect your skin. But tailgating can be an all-day event, which means sunscreen is a necessity. Sure, it may be another item to carry around, but I promise you it’s better than a sunburn. PAPER TOWEL HACK At almost every tailgate, you’re gonna find some great food. BBQ, burgers, hot dogs. You name it, someone around Kyle Field will probably have it. With all this amazing food, you’re going to need a napkin. Keep the table space for food with this tailgating hack: Take a bungee cord and run it through a paper towel roll. Take the hooks of the cord and strap them to the frame of the tent. Now you have a practical and convenient makeshift paper towel holder that is easily accessible for everyone. ALWAYS BRING SOMETHING
If you aren’t hosting a tailgate, don’t just assume you can show up empty handed. All that fun doesn’t come cheap, so show some appreciation by asking the host what you can bring. A bag of chips, dips or other side items work great. But even if all the food will be provided, grab some extra beer for the group. Or water. Or both. Tailgating is a blast, so enjoy the pregame. Soak in the atmosphere and be sure to treat any visitors with that Aggie hospitality. Remember to stay properly hydrated, especially for those day games.

Stop Distracted Driving with Safe2Save App by Azalea Andrade
Every day in the United States about nine people are killed and over one thousand injured because of distracted driving. Have you ever said to yourself, “It’s just one text. I can multitask. I’ve done this a billion times!” It’s super easy to dismiss those numbers—it’s a big country, right? But for Marci Corry, College Station resident and CEO of Safe 2 Save, those statistics simply couldn’t be ignored when a student lost his life from another driver texting right here in College Station. While distracted driving is defined as anything that takes your full and absolute attention away from the road, such as putting on makeup, eating, changing a song, or the big one—texting, distracted driving

BCS Paddleboard Yoga Would you call yoga a sport? Some would argue it’s not. But what about yoga on a paddleboard? For many, yoga is a philosophy and an act of spiritual healing. For others, it’s just a hobby they practice in their leisure. Adding in the aquatic angle makes it an even harder question to answer. But wherever you stand on the spectrum, BCS Paddleboard Yoga owner and instructor Maury Jacob will welcome you with open arms. It’s obvious that aquatic sports tend to be lesser known than their land sport counterparts. And the practice of yoga has increasingly become popular not as a sport, but by persons looking to rid themselves of stress, increase their flexibility and/or build muscular tone. The unique routine of paddleboard yoga combines the elements of wind and water with the strength and flexibility of yogi. In this art form, the lenses of aquatic sport and athletic leisure are effortlessly blended. Yogi of all ages are encouraged to classes with Jacob, as he cites yoga as the reason he is able to stay strong and flexible through maturity. Though courses are mostly taught locally
by Tyra Harris
at Lake Bryan, Jacob often travels to Austin for the variety of lake and river scenery. A caring instructor, Jacob likes for his classes to be small and intimate, so that yogi have the freedom to drift along the entire lake during the session. This also allows for the focus to be on students’ desires in improving their paddle or yoga skills. To accommodate the scorching temperatures of Texas summers, Jacob invites yogi to schedule sessions near dawn and dusk, noting that the scenery is often breathtaking during that time as well. “The practice [of yoga] really works those core stabilizer muscles that help improve our balance back on dry land,” says Jacob. Breathing and balance are key aspects to Paddleboard Yoga. Jacob uses inflatable boards with soft and comfortable decks to make balancing easy. “There is nothing in this world as soothing and grounding as Savasana on a paddleboard, nowhere near the earth. You truly float!” he exclaims. On the company’s Facebook page, “BCS Paddleboard Yoga,” yogi can find a BOOK NOW link to schedule a class. Prices are still holding at introductory rates, so now is a great time to check out the program!

International Charity Day
LOCAL
by Kendall Ward
Living in BCS is like living nowhere else. Smiles are around every corner, and people are ready to lend a hand to anyone in need. International Charity Day on September 5 is a great way to give love back to the community that we call home. Whether your passion is for people, animals or social issues, there are a plethora of opportunities to serve the BCS area. It could be local or international, you get to pick.
This day is not only for acknowledging the tireless work of charities across the world but is also a day to spread awareness and get a hand in. Many businesses support a charity behind the scenes already, so don’t be afraid to ask how you can partner with them to support or donate.
