APP REVIEW
FREE
Let’s admit it. We are all in a one-sided relationship with our mobile devices. Maybe you’ve swerved to avoid surprise oncoming foot traffic or even a tree! Perhaps you simply can’t get enough done because your phone is too good of a distraction. Not to worry, millenial problems require millennial solutions, and Pocket Points has the anwer! This app was created in 2014 by two California State University students and rewards you for staying off your phone. Their mission is to promote healthier learning environments, safer roads, and increase mental health. This is perfect for students but also other folks, since rewards range from discounts, freebies, and sweet deals from local businesses and online retailers to extra credit points for school. Yes, you heard that right. Pocket Points offers an opportunity platform to engage teachers and allow them to offer students extra credit for staying off their phones. Sounds great, so how do you start earning? There are two ways: being on campus and driving. The app uses geofence technology to know whether you are at school or on the road. If you can take a drive without being distracted or be at school without unlocking your phone, you rack up points. It’s as easy as that. Pocket Points is expanding, and the creators are currently looking into some neat new developments, so be sure to keep an eye out for that. It is available for both Android and iOS and has a near five star rating on the Apple App Store. All you have to do is open the app, set a desired goal length of time to stay off your phone, lock your device, and voilà, you are all set! What are you waiting for? Add this app to your productivity folder today!
THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES
By Kendall Ward
MOVIE REVIEW Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper star in the 2012 Hollywood film, “The Place Beyond the Pines,” alongside a number of other well known actors and actresses.
This drama/crime has a bit of everything mixed in, a few love stories, family struggles, robbing banks, car chases, drugs, adolescent rebels and estranged friendships. You’ll be on the edge of your seat at times and shielding your eyes from the inevitable at others. Ryan Gosling, playing Luke Glanton, is passing through a small town when a summer fling turns into a big surprise. He is forced to make a decision for his sudden family, and he ends up down a path with temporary reward but no escape. The first act includes a surprising twist that completely flips the audience’s attempt to pick up on foreshadowing. In the second act, Bradley Cooper enters as police officer Avery Cross in pursuit of Glanton, which leads him into something he is unaware will affect the rest of his years. The latter half of the movie is focused on Glanton and Cross’s sons befriending each other at school and the journey of pain they inherited from their father’s pasts that have dominoed into the present. Overall, this film didn’t do much for me. Intense at times, there was something missing when the credits began rolling. But if you’re looking for something to provoke your thoughts, be sure to add this one to your list.
ALBUM REVIEW
Winner of season 3: The Voice, singer-songwriter, Cassadee Pope comes out from hiding and takes the spotlight with her latest album, “Stages,” released on Feb 1.
By Elisabeth Cano
Since taking home the victory and making her debut as a solo artist, Pope has certainly made her mark on country music. In 2013, Pope’s “Wasting All These Tears” rose to the top of the Billboard country charts. Her hit single, “Think of You” was nominated for Best Country Duo/Group Performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards and earned Pope her first number one on the Hot Country Songs chart. ARTIST: Cassadee Pope ALBUM: Stages
Her latest album “Stages” features eleven songs that are full of bubbly beats and lyrics worth listening to. But there’s also a range of songs here: from the lighter side to a bit darker, Pope covers it all. She worked to create songs for every period of a relationship, from perfect beginning to unfortunate end to moving on. “Stages” moves the listeners through the different courses of a relationship as it develops and demonstrates the reality of what happens when it doesn’t. Fall into Pope’s latest album and experience her full range of vocals, happiness, and heartache.

On Feb. 15, the theater invites you to enjoy the live music of Fox in the Ground with Guys on a Bus and Emily Orr. A music project fronted by singer songwriter Jonathan Richter, Fox in the Ground is a local band whose reunion was conducted by Richter himself in an effort to help him fill out the sound he had in mind for his songs. Guys on a Bus, an indie group that has developed fans and listeners spanning over four generations, will also make an appearance. The group’s fourpart harmonies and simple pop/rock choruses provide an animated experience for listeners that is reminiscent of The Beach Boys. Those whose music of choice resembles that of the indie alternative scene will appreciate Emily Orr and her songs about the love, ache and hope of her life. A 22-year-old student at Texas A&M University from Austin, TX, Orr hopes to bring joy, comfort and freedom to listeners’ lives in the same way that many artists’ music has influenced hers. The event is open to all ages and general admission is $5 per persontickets can be purchased online at the Grand Stafford Theater’s website or when doors open at 8 p.m. The evening’s music will kick off with Fox in the Ground at 9 p.m.

MIKE RYAN AT HURRICANE HARRY’S
By Justin Walker This weekend is going to be packed with exciting and entertaining things to do in the Brazos Valley, from Aggie baseball and softball taking the field to light trails in Wolf Pen Creek Park. But let’s be real, this weather we’ve been having screams for some inside entertainment!
lyrics and an impeccable stage presence, Ryan has quickly become a favorite in Texas country music.
It’s hard to make it in the music industry, but Ryan has found success with hit songs such as “The Rewrite” and “New Hometown.” His music has a way of speaking to listeners on an emotional level, as each of these songs cover how breakups can be. With clever
On the flip side, “The Rewrite” shows how liberating a breakup can be. Ryan writes how he initially penned a love song to his girlfriend before she walked out. In response, the song was changed to reflect his new feelings toward her, which is comically satisfying to hear.
“New Hometown” tells the story of a broken heart, the kind when it becomes too difficult to even live in the same town any longer. With lyrics such as “Somewhere where I won’t see you any time While Mother Nature sorts herself out, head on over to Hurricane I turn around” and “You broke my heart and drug it around my Harry’s on Friday, Feb. 15, and let Mike Ryan warm you up with his stomping grounds,” Ryan shares emotion that is all too familiar for smooth, Southern voice and soulful music. many listeners.

5 TIPS TO HELP STUDENTS THRIVE IN COLLEGE STATION When you choose to attend a university, you’re also choosing a home for the next four (okay, five+) years of your life. Now that you’re here, it’s important to learn about your new hometown and how to be a good neighbor. To make the transition easier, here are five tips to thriving in our community (in addition to going to class): 1. NO MORE THAN FOUR
3. KEEP THE NOISE DOWN
5. STAY INFORMED
Living off campus? Since at least 1972, the city does not allow for more than four unrelated individuals to occupy a dwelling unit. As an example, four friends living together in a home are complying with the ordinance. Four siblings living together are also complying with the ordinance, but if an unrelated friend moved in, it would be a code violation.
That includes barking dogs. It's unlawful for anyone to willfully make or allow continued loud noise, especially from 10 p.m.-6 a.m. If you can hear the noise at the end of your property line, then it's too loud and everyone on your lease risks receiving a citation.
Keep up with city events, programs, emergencies, notices and more by following us on social media. We'd love to hear from you too!
2. MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS Introduce yourself and exchange contact information in case of emergencies or other problems. If an issue arises, would you rather they call you or the police?
4. AVOID CODE VIOLATIONS Many people don't think about city codes until they receive an unwelcome citation. Familiarize yourself with our city codes by visiting cstx.gov/CodeEnforcement.

Say “I do” to improving you and your partner’s bond at the Synergy Marriage and Relationship Retreat. Brazos County couples will be welcomed with open arms by Strengthening Families of the Brazos Valley on Feb. 22 and 23 at Covenant Presbyterian Church in College Station, TX.
