Open the app store and what do you see? Games, games and more games. Some are mind puzzles good for exercising the old noggin. Others consist of simple taps and swipes, moving candy or other gems around to blow things up and advance to the next round. These games serve as a way to sit back and relax or escape boredom during the day. They are sometimes easy, sometimes challenging, but always fun. For those who enjoy the mind puzzles, one app took it to the extreme. “Puzzle Page” takes several of the fun mind games many people enjoy and present them to you in a day’s worth of challenges. Take on the daily crossword, word search and Sudoku puzzles, while also playing new games you may never have heard of, such as kakuro and futoshiki. The app itself is free to download, while each puzzle costs tokens to play that can be earned by beating puzzles and watching videos. A subscription can be purchased to unlock all games each day while also earning access to previous day’s puzzles. All in all, “Puzzle Page” is a great app for those who love to work out their minds while surviving the day.
ROMA

MOVIE REVIEW In his film,“Roma,” director Alfonso Cuarón gives his audience a look at his life growing up in Mexico.
First time actress Yalitza Aparicio stars as Cleo, the maid for a middle class family in 1970’s Mexico. As the family falls apart after the abandonment of the children’s father, Cleo has to become a caregiver, while also dealing with her own personal problems. The story is very small, and although that seems like a complaint, it makes the film very compelling. Following Cleo around her day to day life is so personal, and it really puts you in her shoes. You feel her struggles as if they are your own. This also can be attributed to Yaliza Aparicio’s phenomenal acting. One problem with this personal storytelling is that the movie is slow, especially in the first half. It’s quite long, and the slow burning plot doesn’t make it feel any shorter. However, the main character is so likable that you didn’t mind seeing the more trivial and unexciting parts of her life. Of course, no discussion about this film would be complete without talking about the cinematography. The movie is in black in white, which was worrisome at first, but it fits well. The cinematography is gorgeous, and the black and white coloring gives the film a home movie feel, which is fitting, considering it is the retelling of Cuarón’s childhood. “Roma” is an emotional rollercoaster. Although it’s slow at times, the intriguing characters, great acting, and unique cinematography will keep you intrigued the whole way through.
ALBUM REVIEW
By Justin Walker
Way back in 2013, a young folk singer named Hozier broke through to the Top 40 charts with his hit song “Take Me To Church.” The artist would release his first studio album the following year, self-titled “Hozier,” to widespread success.
ARTIST: Hozier ALBUM: Wasteland, Baby!
But it has been five long years since, and fans have eagerly awaited the follow up. The wait is no more as Hozier’s sophomore album, “Wasteland, Baby!” is finally out. Without a doubt, Hozier’s return is just as magical and captivating as his debut, with several songs included from his 2018 EP “Nina Cried Power.” The song, named after the aforementioned EP, shows new depth for the artist, as well as “Shrike,” which also appears on the previous record. Hozier even manages to bring over the charm from his previous album, with songs like “Almost” and “To Noise Making (Sing)” possessing elements that made “Take Me To Church” so special. These are the songs you expect to hear at your local coffeehouse, but you wouldn’t mind listening to them at any other time either. “Wasteland, Baby!” may have taken longer than some fans would have liked, but the gap in albums honestly did Hozier a favor. With a good bit of time between the two, fans are more likely to just enjoy the new music instead of comparing it to its predecessor. Regardless, this new record is all but a slump in quality. Hozier is proving his worth in the industry.

MUSIC It’ll be a special night on Saturday, March 9, in Downtown Bryan as Joey McGee celebrates the release of his new album, “El Camino Real,” at the Grand Stafford Theater. McGee, a native of New Orleans, draws from his experiences of living all across the United States. Even his time in San Antonio and his current home of Bryan has impacted his sound. From the jazzcentered city in Louisiana to his time living and working in Pittsburgh, McGee mixes several genres together — including soul, country, the blues and rock — all within the Americana-fueled sound. These communities and their musical inspirations have influenced McGee’s newest album, “El Camino Real.” McGee’s website states that the album is a direct representation of himself. “It taps into the rootedness of who I am — a Southern, CreoleCajun musician working through my hang-ups and trying to make the world a better place along the way. These songs are a good reflection of where I am in life. They feel like rich, warm, black earth in your hands.” Joining McGee in the celebration is Andrea Young, the Wicked River Band and Grifter and Shills. Andrea Young is a singer-songwriter from Bryan. Her performances consist of various genres, including smooth jazz and blues, classic pop and rock, and even folk.

“G R A N D C A N YO N P H OTO G R A P H S” When you stand at the edge of the Grand Canyon, all the things you’ve had on your mind tend to shift to the back of your brain. The grandeur and wonder and beauty of it takes your breath away, and all your little nagging worries are put in perspective. Now, with the help of Houstonian Mark Burns’ stunning photographs, you can be transported to the Grand Canyon without leaving College Station. From Friday March 1 through June 9, the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum is proud to present a new exhibit, “Grand Canyon Photographs: Celebrating the Centennial 1919-
2019.” Featuring vintage-inspired panoramics as well as night photography, the exhibit also includes a looped, time-lapse video of the continually changing light, hues and weather of the canyon. A gifted photographer from a young age, Burns began his professional career in the late 70s. A photographic jack of all trades, Burns completed a five year project in the fall of 2015 that captured all 59 US National Parks in black and white. Burns is a master of both black and white photography and large format photography, a perfect combination when your subjects are our National Parks.

ONRAMP
Imagine what your day-to-day would look like if you did not have a car. It would be difficult to get to work on time, to pick up your children from school if they get sick, to get to the grocery store or to make doctor appointments. Imagine how much time you might spend waiting for a bus or walking to your desired destination - even when it’s raining, even when it’s baking hot. So many opportunities would be limited, simply because they’re not near a bus line, or are too far to walk to.
explained all of the benefits that On Ramp recipients are able to take advantage of with their new and revamped vehicles. After receiving a vehicle, the new owners are able to attend more community events, better support their children’s after-school activities, and invest more energy toward healthcare. The effects are immediate, and can be wildly life-changing: one recipient is now added to a kidney transplant list after six years of dialysis because a prerequisite for consideration was reliable transport.
Like most of America, Bryan-College Station was built on the assumption that everyone would have a personal vehicle at their disposal to get around. It’s easy to forget how lucky we are to make it from point A to point B with just a turn of the ignition. On Ramp is here to remind us that many families in our community aren’t in the same position.
On Ramp works with local organizations, including Habitat for Humanity and Methodist Children’s Home in Bryan, who recommend individuals for consideration. By maintaining a pipeline of women and families who would greatly benefit from vehicle self-sufficiency, when funds or a car comes through to give, Jennings is able to move quickly.
Founded by BCS local Blake Jennings, teaching pastor at Grace Bible Church’s Southwood Campus, On Ramp is a nonprofit organization with a mission to provide reliable transportation to people in need to get them on the road to self-sufficiency. It is one of just two organizations in the whole state of Texas working in this space. Since its launch in January 2017, On Ramp has given away seventeen cars and repaired fourteen more. All but two of the cars have been given to single mothers. In the last week alone, the organization was able to gift two cars!
On Ramp is always looking for individuals or businesses that are interested in supporting their mission financially, as well as cars that could be gifted to a well-deserving family. They hope to continue to grow their capacity to serve needs within the Brazos Valley, and aim to one day expand their model to other cities across the state. For more information, please visit On Ramp’s website.
Each car not only unlocks a wave of opportunities for the driver, but creates a ripple effect for their children, their extended family and their personal networks as well. “A car can affect generations to come,” Jennings said, as he
