APP REVIEW

FREE

Take the road less traveled when exercising and use Charity Miles, a mobile app that is revolutionizing calisthenics, and more importantly, charities around the world. Founded in 2011 by Gene Gurkoff, Charity Miles has provided over $2.5 million to 40 world-class charities by connecting charities, individuals and corporate sponsors to create social change. On the app, users can earn money for their selected charity every time they are active. This is accomplished by the app’s software reliance on mobile GPS and motion sensors to detect motion and measure distance. Users can download the Charity Miles App from the iTunes Apple store and the Google Play store. Once the app has been download onto a mobile device, the user will be instructed to create an account, and choose from one of 40 charities to support, which can be changed at any time. On the app’s home screen, users can log activity from the following options- indoor run, indoor walk, outdoor bike, outdoor run and outdoor walk. The Charity Miles Team feature enables users to join and create teams on the app. By being part of one or several teams, users can build community, motivate peers, and most importantly, witness the group’s collective impact. To join a team, users can select the Team tab (second to the right on the bottom of the home screen), search for a team, and join by selecting the team name and pushing the “Join Team” button. If users would like to create their own group, they can do this on the Team tab as well by clicking the “+New Team” button, entering a team name, and inviting team members via Facebook and Twitter by tapping the gear in the upper right-hand corner. Be the change with the Charity Miles mobile app and start running towards a brighter future today!

HOW IT ENDS

By Justin Walker

MOVIE REVIEW Electricity gone. Communication cut off. Survival of the strongest, both mentally and physically. Could you survive the end of the world?

That’s what viewers are asked in “How It Ends” as things start to fall apart around Will (Theo James) and the rest of the world. After Will and his girlfriend Sam (Kat Graham) discover they are expecting, Will uses his upcoming business trip to Chicago to ask Sam’s parents for her hand in marriage. However, a strained relationship with Sam’s father, Tom (Forest Whitaker), doesn’t go well. The next day, communications and electricity in Chicago crash, forcing Will and Tom to set aside their differences to get back to Seattle and find Sam. “How It Ends” presents a lot of “what if” questions to viewers, as the Netflix original throws many end-of-times scenarios at Will and Tom on their journey out west. The duo is tasked with making very tough decisions at times, prompting life altering consequences in some cases. Basic human decency is put to the test in this film, as theft, murder and other questionable actions become second nature in the fight to survive. Even in the final minutes of the film, characters are forced to revisit fight-or-flight instincts in order to continue living. Overall, “How It Ends” is an exciting and heart-pounding adventure of apocalyptic proportions. It’s definitely worth a watch. Just make sure you don’t have any distractions.

ALBUM REVIEW The King of country music is back! With his newest album, “Honky Tonk Time

Machine,” George Strait continues to make his mark on the country music scene and hold true to his title of ‘The King.’ The album was released March 29 of this year and is now available on any music streaming service. By Elisabeth Cano

After two years of hiatus, Strait produced an album that differed from the ones he’s most known for. Unlike his other albums that often feature the soulful sound of the fiddle, “Honky Tonk Time Machine” is full of steel guitar melodies and upbeat, funky rhythms that call for boots stampin’ on an old hardwood floor.

ARTIST: George Strait ALBUM: Honky Tonk Time Machine

Strait takes his listeners on a journey through the past, present, and future with songs like “Some Nights,” “Two More Wishes,” and the album-titled song, “Honky Tonk Time Machine.” Listeners will be able to experience the pain of past heartbreak, the joy and excitement of a new love, and traveling back to the good ‘ol days of country music with this album. Keeping his romantic reputation in tact, there are a few love songs on the album and with Strait’s deep, Southern and passionate vocals, listeners will surely find all the words they needed for that special someone.

MUSIC What began as a chili cook-off in a 1991 Bryan grocery store parking lot has transformed into the Chilifest Music Festival- an unprecedented, two-day festival of chili, live music and fun in Snook, Texas. This year’s Chilifest festival will occur on April 5 and 6 at the Starlight Ballroom, and the entertainment is expected to be as hot as the chili itself. The festival will include country and rock live music, vendors, and most importantly, the notorious Chili cook-off on Saturday, April 6. Over 35,000 patrons attend the festival each year to witness some of the biggest country music and rock icons in action. This year’s lineup will include John Hord, Kolby Cooper, Kody West, Shane Smith & The Saints, Pat Green and Koe Wetzel on Friday, April 5. Saturday, April 6 will welcome Kyle Park, Flatland Cavalry, Whiskey Myers, Randy Rogers Band and Cody Jinks. Guests are encouraged to form a team and participate in Saturday’s chili cook-off to showcase their culinary skills in true Texan fashion. Each team’s hand-crafted chili will be anonymously judged on a 50 point scale, according to five categories—color, aroma, consistency, taste and aftertaste, with each category being worth 10 points. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams and include—first place ($1,000), second place ($750) and third place ($500). Teams are required to sign up at the venue or online.

Praised for its contributions to the Brazos Valley, Chilifest has donated over $3,500,000 to local charities since 1999 when Chilifest Incorporated, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, formed to professionally manage the event. Today, Chilifest’s mission to “offer assistance to thousands of ill, neglected, and less fortunate individuals” is reflected in the community’s long-standing appreciation for the event. On Friday, April 5 gates will open at 12:00 p.m. and will close promptly at 12:00 a.m. For Saturday’s festivities, gates will open at 10 a.m. and will close after the last performer has finished their set. R ANDY ROGERS BAND AT CHILIFEST

By Justin Walker It’s no debate that the Randy Rogers Band is one of the most well known bands in Texas country. For nearly two decades, the group has travelled and performed across the U.S., growing as a band while consistently putting out great music and gaining fans along the way. Not only has the music been great, there’s been a lot of it too! The Randy Rogers Band is getting ready to drop their eighth studio album, “Hellbent,” later this month, and if history has anything to say about it, it will be a good one. The group’s last four studio albums have all reached the Top 5 in the U.S. Country charts, and two of them cracked the Top 10 in the Billboard 200. The band has also had success with live albums and duet albums, working with Wade Bowen on multiple occasions. “Hellbent,” which releases on April 26, is set to be the next charttopping album for the group. “The record is our band. It’s the same guys that’s played on all the records,” Rogers said. “I think it’s just us. It’s us back to some of the earlier records that we made.” In the first few albums they made, such as “Rollercoaster” and “Just a Matter of Time,” the band was just playing and enjoying themselves, Rogers said. “Hellbent” is a nice return to that.

8

“We’re proud of it,” he said. “It’s kind of a back to your roots kinda thing.” The first single from the album emphasizes that “back to your roots” feeling. “Crazy People,” which debuted on Feb. 15, reflects Rogers’ youth, one that he describes as very sheltered. Growing up as the child of a Baptist preacher, Rogers said he was scared of everything. But as soon as he came of age, he did all those things his parents told him not to do. “I think a lot of us grew up that way,” Rogers said. “Usually the things they told us not to do were the things we did the most.” The song describes the people and things he was warned about, serving as a little nod to his parents and his childhood. The Randy Rogers Band started promoting the new album on their “Never Ending Tour” at the end of March and will do so throughout the next few months, including his stop at Chilifest. Playing at the annual festival in Snook is a personal highlight for Rogers. “Dude, Chilifest is awesome! I love it,” he said. “I can’t tell you enough how happy we are to be coming back this year. It’s one of those events we hate to miss. I can’t wait.” The Randy Rogers Band will take the stage at 5:20 on Saturday, April 26. The day’s lineup includes Kyle Park, Flatland Cavalry, Whiskey Myers and Cody Jinks.

THOUSANDS TO GATHER IN CELEBRATION

OF SCIENCE

To boldly go where no one has gone before, it makes sense that you’ve got to imagine boundless possibilities and explore the unknown. Learning something new every day is also a great idea, and at the annual Physics and Engineering Festival on Saturday, April 6, you can do all of the above! Gather your family and friends and join the Physics and Astronomy Department at Texas A&M for an event that you won’t want to miss. Since 2003, thousands of people from across the state and nation have attended the festival to learn and take part in hands-on demonstrations and activities. Free and open to anyone aged zero to 99, the festival is just one of the many outreach initiatives of the TAMU Department of Physics and Astronomy that brings science into the community.

those things have to do with beer.” The kick-off will be an evening that you won’t want to miss! At the heart of the festival are the students that collaborate to construct hands-on demonstrations so that guests can experience science and technology up-close, and the students are thrilled to present their experiments to the public. During the school year, undergraduate and graduate students from the DEEP (Discover, Explore and Enjoy Physics and Engineering) Program have created exciting new demonstrations with the help of their dedicated professors and mentors. Graduate student and PhD candidate Dawson Nodurft explains how the festival revitalizes his passion for physics: “When you’re focusing on your studies or your research, you get used to thinking in the world where everybody thinks the same way that you do. Sometimes you lose some of that excitement because everything becomes the same… At the festival you see faculty, staff, graduate students, undergraduate students, all working together to present demos that capture some of the exciting things for physics.”

There are over 200 exhibits, including interactive demonstrations, programs tailored to every age group and presentations by famous scientists and astronauts. Throughout the day, guests are encouraged to channel their inner scientist, ride a bike with square wheels, run through a pool of cornstarch and shoot balloons with lasers. Some of the special events include NASA’s “Driven to Explore All activities will be located on the Texas A&M campus, in and Mobile Exhibit,” a virtual tour of a Large Hadron Collider, Keith around the Mitchell Physics and Mitchell Institute Buildings. Spring has sprung and that means Chilifest has once again come around! Always a treat, this year, Cody Jinks will take the headliner stage Saturday, April 6, to end the festival right. Grab your tickets now to catch his sure-to-be unforgettable performance from 7-8:15 p.m.

You may recognize the rough, gruff vocals of Jinks from his most popular songs like “Must Be The Whiskey” or “Desert Wind” that also feature the sorrowful sound of a steel guitar. Unsurprisingly, Jinks’ 2016 album, “I’m Not the Devil,” rose to number four on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart.

For over a decade now, artist Cody Jinks has been producing music that sure does speak to the soul. After dabbling in the heavy metal world of music, Jinks decided to try his hand and voice at country in 2008. And thank goodness he did! From there this Texan singer and songwriter has built a fandom numbering into the twenties of thousands and continuing to grow!

With his newest album, “Lifers,” released in July 2018, Jinks reaffirms to his fans his commitment to producing music that has purpose and passion in its stirring lyrics and melodies. The album’s songs take on the spirit of solidarity and hard workin’ crowds. Jinks’ lyrics express life from all angles with a gritty truth. Add to that the depth of his voice that creates a mysterious, smokey-like sound, and it’s clear why Jinks draws in so many fans from afar to listen.

Jinks and his sound caters toward fans of the rock-and-roll side of country music, and with his rugged vocals and tousled rhythms, he creates stories through his lyrics that listeners can relate to on all levels. From being a lone wolf to blaming it on the alcohol to leaving, Jinks takes his listeners through all stages and phases of life.

Don’t miss out! Be sure to purchase your Chilifest tickets now to secure your spot! For more information on other performing artists and to purchase tickets, please visit the Chilifest website.

THEATER ARTS TAKES CENTER STAGE AT BLINN COLLEGE CAMPUSES Blinn College continues its tremendous theatre arts spring season with performances of the award-winning play “I and You” at the Bryan Campus and the 10 Minute Play Festival at the Brenham Campus. “I and You” centers around a blossoming relationship between a bedridden teenage girl, Caroline, and the popular, athletic Anthony, after Mr. Popular delivers school work to his ill classmate. Collaborating on the poetry assignment, the two begin to bond with a much deeper connection than they even knew existed. The two-person play takes place entirely inside Caroline’s bedroom, where the topics of youth, life and love are pondered throughout the script. The play does contain adult language and themes. Theatre Instructor Jean Daniels will direct the play, which won the 2014 American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) New Play Award. “I and You” was also a finalist for the Susan Smith blackburn Prize the same year, which recognizes talented female playwrights on an annual basis. The first show begins on Friday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Blinn-Bryan Student Center Theater. Daniels and the actors will return to the

STAGECENTER COMMUNITY THEATRE’S

“MURDERED TO DEATH” TO AMUSE AUDIENCES By Juniper LeValley

Have you ever been swept away by an Agatha Christie mystery? If so, you’re in for a treat with this spoof of her work in StageCenter Community Theatre’s latest offering. Praised for its humorous ambiance, the setting of “Murdered to Death” is a 1930’s English manor where all the characters embody “whodunnit” stereotypes typical of the English gentry at the time. Immerse yourself in a world of suspense at the premiere of “Murdered to Death,” with performances available on Thursday, Friday and Saturday April 20th at 7:30 p.m. Written by Peter Gordon and directed by Evelyn Callaway, “Murdered to Death” tells the tale of Inspector Pratt, a man whose incompetence bests his ability to solve the murder of the house’s owner. As the play progresses, Pratt doesn’t stand a chance. With the murderer still looming “will the miscreant be unmasked before everyone else has meet their doom, or will the audience die laughing first?” Since its establishment in 1964, StageCenter has been hailed as an exciting addition to the Brazos Valley arts community. Jawdropping productions have reflected its five-decade history and make for a perfect outing for all ages. Located in Downtown Bryan, StageCenter Theatre serves as a community hub, where all are encouraged to attend and partake in the fun.

For Thursday performances, admission is $10 for all ages. Tickets purchased for Friday and Saturday showings adhere to the following prices- adults ($15), students with a valid ID ($12) and senior attendees ($12). Tickets can be purchased at the StageCenter Community Theatre box office beginning at 7:00 p.m. on designated show nights. However, patrons are encouraged to purchase tickets online in advance on the theatre’s website at https://bit.ly/1I8TRV7. All StageCenter ticket purchases are nonrefundable and non-transferrable. The production will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m., and the doors will open at 7 p.m. Guests are asked to arrive at least fifteen minutes prior the start of the show, and patrons will not be seated after 7:40 p.m. as a courtesy to other attendees. CHILIFEST 2019 LINEUP F R I DAY

By Sharon Roe

S AT U R DAY

John Hord • Performs 4:45 - 5:15 pm

Kyle Park • Performs 12:50 - 1:50 pm

Kolby Cooper • Performs 5:30 - 6:15 pm

Flatland Cavalry • Performs 2:10 - 3:25 pm

If you’re looking for Red Dirt meets Traditional Country with a smidgeon of Rock, this is the band for you. A Texas native, Hord cites his father, Houston singer Jeff Hord, along with Aaron Watson and Cody Johnson as influences. He’s been focusing on his music professionally since 2016. From East Texas, Kolby Cooper describes his work as having a “Texas Music Sound.” Cooper was also influenced by his dad as they drove around listening to country. As a result, he started playing guitar, and the rest is history. Cooper’s inspirations include Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Blink 182 and Chris Cornell.

Kody West • Performs 6:30 - 7:15 pm

Kody West’s sound mixes Texas Country and Bluegrass with strong grooves. From Denton, Texas, West started his musical career in 2014 as an acoustic artist, opening for another band that he was also managing, so he’s experienced the music business from both sides.

Shane Smith and The Saints • Performs 7:30 - 8:15 pm

Shane Smith and The Saints admit they don’t fit easily into a musical category. But you can expect four-part harmonies, intense musicality and a show-stopping performance nonetheless. Calling Austin home, the band tours both the U.S. and internationally.

Pat Green • Performs 8:30 - 9:30 pm

Pat Green has been around the block a few times, but now he’s come home to Texas. Winning a major record label contract catapulted him to the top, where he toured with Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban. But Green wanted to get back to his creative roots and the sound his fans have come to know and love—acoustic guitars, fiddles, and lyrics that reach out and grab your heart.

Koe Wetzel • Performs 9:45 - 10:45 pm While many musicians go into detail when writing about their sound, Koe Wetzel and his band clearly keep it about the music itself. Under the “BIO” tab of their website, it says, “Texas Rock and Roll.” And rock it they do. This East Texan band based out of Stephenville can deliver the quieter, thoughtful side, but also does high-energy like nobody’s business, perfect for ending your week!

Park picked up a guitar to get over the loss of his dad and couldn’t put it down. Now more than thirteen years into his musical career, this Leander, Texas, native describes his music as having a “neo-traditional country sound brimming with honkytonk-fueled fiddle, pedal steel and searing guitar riffs.” Based in Lubbock, Flatland Cavalry’s sound is a mix of country, folk, and Americana with thought-provoking lyrics that make you want more. The group cites the Turnpike Troubadours, Wheeler Brothers, and Randy Rogers Band as influences, so don’t miss the chance to hear both bands on the same night!

Whiskey Myers • Performs 3:45 - 5:00 pm

This band can do celebratory with the best of them, but also knows how to make you weep. Like their website says of their style, “Some call it rebel music, but it’s more like everyday soul,” That just about covers the whole spectrum, both in sound and in content. And one thing’s for sure, they’re never boring. From Tyler, Texas, this band’s third album hit #1 on the iTunes Country Chart.

Randy Rogers Band • Performs 5:20 - 6:35 pm

Randy Rogers Band credits their long term relationship of seventeen years and their ability to play to their strengths for their success. While they call San Marcos home, they’ve played to sold out shows all over the country. Their new album, “Hellbent,” has been described as “high-octane,” so this band is sure to ramp up your Saturday and bring Chilifest home.

Cody Jinks • Performs 7:00 - 8:15 pm

When an artist has more than 20,000 fans who have selforganized a fan club, you know the guy’s good. His website describes the album “Lifers,” a #4 hit on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, as “rock-and-roll-steeped country sound.” From Ft. Worth, Texas, this singer/songwriter never lets up, and Jinks’ unyielding baritone delivers songs that portray the struggle of life but ultimately bring the courage to face it.
