APP REVIEW

FREE

It’s been said, “if you can’t take the heat, stay out of the kitchen.” While cooking can bring challenges, especially for the novice, one mobile app is helping users handle the heat in more efficient ways than ever before. With over 13 million total downloads, the BigOven mobile app simplifies cooking with its fruitful functions that help users stay organized “in the kitchen and on the go.” Available for download on the Apple iTunes store and the Google Play store, the app allows users to find recipes, use leftovers and compose grocery lists. Featured in the 25th Anniversary issue of Martha Stewart Living, InStyle, BuzzFeed and AllYou Magazine, the app has made a name for itself among consumers with a 4.3 rating on the Google Play store. Hailed for its collection of delicious recipes, BigOven has something to offer everyone. On the “My Recipes” page, users can search for recipes according to type, such as gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free and Keto, among others. By searching for recipes via the “Recent Raves” function, users are provided a comprehensive list of trending dishes on the app. For those who are unwilling to part with day-old leftovers, BigOven can help transform them into an appetizing endeavor. On the “Use Up Leftovers” tab, users can input up to three ingredients, and the app will show which dishes can be prepared. For those who are interested in meal planning, recipes can be organized into meals for stress-free planning on the “Meal Plan” page. And best of all, under the “Groceries” tab, personalized grocery lists can be made and shared so that someone else can pick up those items you need when they’re at the store. For more information, visit the BigOven mobile app website.

MOVIE REVIEW We all love a good book that’s been recreated into a motion picture. Well, add another to that stack! “Unplanned” was released only a couple weeks ago in select theatres across the US and made a whopping six million the opening weekend alone. The directors were unsure how the movie would be received but were extremely pleased with the amount of positive feedback they got.

The movie is based on the true story of Abby Johnson, former director of the Bryan Planned Parenthood, right here in the Brazos Valley. In fact, in case you missed it, Maroon Weekly spoke with Abby’s husband, Shawn Carney ’05, in an in depth interview prior to the release of the movie. You can check out that interview, entitled “Bryan-College Station Takes National Stage With Opening Of ‘Unplanned’ Movie This Weekend” on the Maroon Weekly website. Abby worked at the Bryan Planned Parenthood for eight years until she resigned in 2009, due to being asked to assist in a ultrasound abortion. On that day, her world was turned upside down, and her life changed dramatically. The film has gotten plenty of support as well as flack, so be sure to not judge a movie (or book) by its cover and see it for yourself. The backstory is also extremely interesting, especially because all of this took place in our hometown. You may have seen it on national news as it drew quite a light to small Brazos Valley. If you’re interested in watching the backstory about Abby and the film’s creators, go to YouTube and type in “Unplanned:Sneak Peek.” In her book, Johnson goes into more details about her life and experiences than the two hour long movie, but the film is definitely worth a watch. Two theatres in the BCS area are showing the movie for the next few weeks, so be sure to snag a ticket while you can. It was a movie worth the money that will give you two sides to the story.

ALBUM REVIEW

Just in time for spring and sunshine comes singer-songwriter Khalid’s newest album. “Free Spirit” features 17 songs of pure aesthetic that will have listeners feeling mellow while chillaxin by the pool. Released on April 5, the album is full of softened beats and languid lyrics that listeners can lay back and enjoy. By Elisabeth Cano

While his music is primarily associated with the R&B genre, Khalid isn’t a typical R&B artist. His impressive vocal range is what sets him apart; from dropping low and deep to hitting those high notes, he can cover all the ranges. Most of his music focuses more on lyrics and vocals instead of beats and rhythms unlike the common R&B works. Khalid has also collaborated with artists like Billie Eilish and Halsey. ARTIST: Khalid ALBUM: Free Spirit

His newest album, “Free Spirit” has already risen to number 1 on Billboards’ 200 Album chart. The album features songs like “Better” and “Heaven” that let fans in on a more romantic side of the artist. The album itself caters to the laid-back crowd with its easy breezy beats and the smooth soft air of Khalid’s voice. “Free Spirit” is available on any music streaming device. Check out the tunes now!

“Softly call the muster, Let comrade answer, ‘Here!’” These words come from the 1943 poem written in honor of the Aggie soldiers that fought during World War II. The tradition of Muster has been around for many generations and allows Texas A&M students and alumni to honor the former Aggies that have passed away the last preceding year. This year’s Muster ceremony will be held inside Reed Arena on Monday, April 22, with precessions beginning at 7 p.m. April 21 first began as a day of celebration in the 1870s at Texas A&M. The university hosted campus field days on the anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto, remembering the marking of our independence. By the 1890s, it became an official college holiday. During this time, the alumni organizations at Texas A&M were starting a separate tradition of reading aloud a list of names of fellow former students who had passed away in the last year, in order to honor them and let their spirit live on. The first ever campus Muster was held in 1924 at Guion Hall. The ceremony of Muster has been held on campus ever since. Muster starts with a flag-raising ceremony at sunrise and lasts throughout the day. In 1942, the most famous Muster ceremony took place, and the tradition among the Aggie community changed. After falling under Japan’s siege at the Philippine island of Corregidor, news headlines spoke of the Texas A&M alumni gathering and their courage and camaraderie during the fight. In the next year, following the battle, more than 500 Aggie Musters were held worldwide to honor the fallen soldiers. From there, the tradition of Muster stayed as a long-lasting part of the Aggie spirit known today.

Each year, current students and alumni gather together in the community to honor the former Texas A&M students that have passed away in the last year. The annual ceremony traditionally takes place on April 21. However, the Texas A&M Aggie Muster Committee announced that this year’s campus Muster ceremony would be held Monday, April 22. The one-time date change came about from the concerns of the traditional date coinciding with the Easter Sunday holiday and the difficulties members of the Texas A&M campus community and the families of deceased Aggies being honored would face with travel.

MAROON WEEKLY // Apr. 17, 2019 // MAROONWEEKLY.COM

At each Muster ceremony that takes place around the world, traditionally, a speaker will address the crowd, sharing a few words before the “Roll Call for the Absent. The speaker will call the names of those former Aggies from that area who have passed away in the year, and as each name is read, a family member or loved ones will answer ‘Here’ to show respect for the Aggie that is present only in spirit now. A candle will be lit in honor of the deceased, burning throughout the rest of the ceremony. This year, because of the special relationship George H. W. Bush and Barbara Pierce Bush had with Texas A&M, both their names will be called at the campus ceremony. Campus Muster is the largest Muster ceremony in the world and features a special rifle volley from the Ross Volunteers to honor the deceased Aggies. The rifle volley consists of firing three times in unison. After the rifle volley, a special arrangement of “Taps is played as the ceremony comes to a close. The Muster ceremony brings together more Aggies worldwide on one occasion than any other event. It is a tradition unique to Texas A&M that embodies and perpetuates the true Aggie spirit. Although celebrations of Muster have taken place for generations and there will be many more to come, the roots remain the same: honoring the Aggies who have passed and celebrating those gathered together.

VIDEO GAMES COME TO LIFE AT ZOOMZ PAINTBALL By Cumah Holt

With summer just around the corner, many are looking for new and exciting activities, and what’s more exciting than getting to have some friendly competition in a video game brought to life? This is what brothers Ryan and Taylor Thompson had in mind when they decided to open their own paintball range. They experienced the sport once and decided that the BCS Area should have access to the sport as well. In 2010, the brothers opened Zoomz, and in the 9 years since, it has become a hot spot for those hosting parties, competing in challenges, or just having good fun.

and challenging experience. Zoomz has an extensive inventory of equipment, including specialized guns for different ages and skill levels, as well as smoke grenades, paint grenades, and other ways to make the game more interesting. Although Zoomz is home to competitive teams like the A&M Paintball Team and the Brazos Bandits, co-owner Ryan Thompson advises that this is a sport that anyone of any skill level can play. Thompson wants to break the fear that newcomers have of

Zoomz has been at its current location on Linda Lane in Bryan paintballing being difficult or painful. He advises, “Don’t let people’s for two years now. Inside, there are arcade games as well as bad stories spoil the experience. Getting over the fear is the hardest concessions available. However, the real fun happens outside. Zoomz offers 5 different playing fields open to paintball, laser tag and airsoft. With themed fields and plenty of obstacles, including bus and car shells, the fields are designed to give players a fun

8

part. As an industry, we are getting rid of the stigma that paintball hurts. It’s fun once you try.” With Zoomz’s equipment and packages designed for lower skill levels, it’s clear that you don’t have to be an expert in order to enjoy the sport.

MAROON WEEKLY // Apr. 17, 2019 // MAROONWEEKLY.COM

Zoomz hosts public play on the weekends and private play for those who make reservations during the week. Thompson notes that besides just having a good time, reserving a private party is a great way to bring any group, team, or organization closer together. “It’s good for teambuilding if you had a group that wanted to get better as a team. Teams that communicate more are the winners. It’s an adrenaline rush and a great way to blow off steam.” Zoomz also offers events, including their annual Zombie Event for Halloween, where players can hunt live glow in the dark zombies on the playing field! No matter the occasion, players are sure to have a fun and adrenalinefilled experience. The Thompson brothers’ experience with the business has been a challenging but rewarding one. While discussing his experiences starting the business, Ryan notes, “It was a whole new world of learning the business, but it’s so gratifying when you have kids who say,

‘This is the best party I’ve ever had.’ Now, Zoomz is a respected and loved place where people of all ages and skill levels can come together and have great time. So, as the Thompson brothers encourage, put down the video game controller and experience the game in real life! For more information or to make reservations, you can visit the Zoomz website or facebook page.
