SID MEIER’S CIVILIZATION VI

By Steven Jordan

WEEKLY

MEDIA SHAKEDOWN

APP REVIEW

FREE

The fabled strategy series Sid Meier’s Civilization, the first iteration of which was released as far back as 1991 on the PC, is legendary among nearly all gamers. While some games in the series have found their way onto consoles, and there was even a board game version released in 2010, Civilization has so far existed almost solely on PC. That said, publisher Aspyr Media decided last year to release Civilization VI, the latest game in the series, on iOS. You can now lose yourself in one of the deepest strategy games ever made wherever you are. Riding the bus, relaxing during your lunch break, or killing time in between classes, you can indulge in the richly strategic and beautifully animated world of Sid Meier’s Civilization VI. One thing to note: only the first 60 turns are free, but you can try any leader and any map. After that, the app costs $19.99 to continue, but by then, you’re sure to be completely hooked!

THE PERFECT DATE

By Justin Walker

Dreams can be deceiving, and sometimes what you really want is right in front of you all along. That’s the focus of the the newest Netflix-original film, “The Perfect Date,” a film that takes a minor directional shift from the typical teenage-drama genre. MOVIE REVIEW

“The Perfect Date” follows high school senior Brooks Rattigan (Noah Centineo) as he prepares his college applications, specifically to his dream school of Yale. His family’s finances aren’t exactly up to Ivy League standards, so Brooks decides to be creative in his money-making strategies. After posing as the boyfriend of the rich and rebellious Celia Lieberman (Laura Marano) for some extra cash, Brooks decides to create an app for platonic escort service--“The Perfect Date.” Of course, every action has a consequence. Brooks’ business venture soon has unexpected results, and he has to decide between the college/girl of his dreams and what will truly bring him happiness. The film isn’t anything new when it comes to teenage dramas. Boy meets girl, boy friendzones girl, boy falls for girl, boy upsets girl, boy fights for girl. But what “The Perfect Date” does do differently is making the the characters a bit more realistic. Brooks is a bit self absorbed, not the perfect lead that is so often featured in these films. Celia is hypocritical and judgemental. It places the characters in a real world setting that is more relatable than other movies in the genre. Overall, “The Perfect Date” is worth a watch. It’s predictable yet funny and has just enough of a unique quality that makes for an entertaining 90 minutes.

ALBUM REVIEW

Releasing their first studio album since 2015, Cage the Elephant made a statement when “Social Cues,” the group’s fifth album, dropped in April.

By Lainey Wolf

The band has definitely taken a more mainstream approach to their music, featuring radio-friendly hooks and easy going vibes. This is a 180-degree turn from their early work, which rested purely on the carefree and rowdy energy of many novice bands.

ARTIST: Read Southall Band ALBUM: Live at Tower Theatre

As is expected with Cage the Elephant, strong songwriting is present in their newest album. The lead single, “Ready To Let Go,” documents the ending of frontman Matt Schultz’s marriage. Despite the depressing direction of the lyrics, the song features an up-tempo and catchy tune, which strangely enough works. “Social Cues” is full of personal moments which are focused into heartfelt pieces of art. While it may differ from previous works from the group, the album is worth a listen and possibly a purchase.

Great burgers, craft beer and Texas Country singer Cory Morrow go together like watermelon and the Fourth of July. Currently, Morrow’s ninth studio album “Whiskey and Pride” has him on the road again, so come on out to Smitty K’s on May 16 for an evening you won’t forget.

CORY MORROW AT SMITTY K’S by Justin Walker

By Sharon Roe

There’s a couple of things you can always count on from Cory Morrow’s music: it’s gonna be real easy on the ears and it’s gonna be real. In a voice with a twang that wraps you up in a warm blanket on a chilly country morning, Morrow’s lyrics never shy away from calling things just like they are. “The material on this album covers hard choices – from trying to find faith in difficult situations to celebrating life by running out naked into the hill country rain,” says Morrow. “’Whiskey and Pride’ is honestly one of my most diverse records, to date.” And that willingness to look at things— everything—with eyes wide open and heart exposed is one aspect of Morrow’s genius. This dedication to being upfront and throwing in a twist pulls you in and won’t let you go. Take, for example, the title track where Morrow is joined by Lloyd Maines, steel guitar wizard and producer of the album. “Whiskey and Pride” chronicles the inner journey of a man at war with himself over a relationship. Sitting at the bar drowning his emotions, he can’t manage to drown the idea that he should be handling himself differently, but “whiskey goes down easier than pride.” The album itself is another chronicle: Morrow’s evolution as an artist. Combining earlier styles with lyrics full of the realizations that only come with time just works, and fans of his previous work will not be disappointed. Especially with the first studio remake of “Always and Forever,” featuring Jamie Lin Wilson.

This month has been a big one for Morrow. May 1 was his birthday, and on the 3-5, he hosted the first Go Wheels Up! Festival in San Marcos, celebrating airplanes, cars and country music. Be on the lookout for next year’s festival. Come May 16, try pairing Morrow’s up close and personal music with a Smitty K’s locally sourced burger, fries, and a cold one. For tickets and more information, go to Smitty K’s website.

The Mobility Worldwide Brazos Valley chapter was opened in 2009, and has built and distributed over 3,500 of such carts in the past ten years. After hundreds are built, MWBV works with the two other chapters in Texas and those around the United States to fill shipping containers with their packaged carts, and sends the containers on to partner nonprofit organizations across the world. This year alone, MWBV has sent 220 carts to Zambia and is in the process of filling a second container with over 170 carts for Liberia. Though the organization is faith-based, there are no restrictions for who can be a recipient. “Our only concern is whether our mobility device can assist you and that you are in need of it - it doesn’t matter to us whether or not you are a Christian, what country you live in, or who you align with politically,” Margot Newcomb, MWBV’s Shop Manager explained. She also shared that there is no limit for who can become a volunteer. “We’ve got two 90 year olds in the shop today,” Newcomb added. Anyone interested in lending a hand on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday mornings will be trained on different parts of the assembly in order to contribute. To produce and ship carts internationally for just $300, MWBV’s entire local team is comprised of unpaid volunteers. In addition to their fundraising efforts, the organization also receives annual in-kind donations that help keep the costs per cart affordable. If you are interested in learning more or in helping ‘hands on’ at their facility, visit their website, Mobility Worldwide Brazos Valley.
