Let’s face it, life is hard. Holding on to faith that if you push a little harder, you will reach your goals is also hard. So, why not remind yourself every day that you are capable of achieving those “impossible” goals, and have the ability to be the person you aim to be? Kesha Trippett, founder of the Daughters of the King app, helps uplift women through daily devotionals and ministries that are accessible directly through the app. Daughters of the King was founded October 9, 2012, and since then, their mission has been to inspire women around the world, to pray for revival, and to encourage unity. On a daily basis, you will get messages with a devotional and a prayer. Also, at the end of some devotionals, you will receive a scripture to further your reading. The app helps individuals learn who they are in Christ, aiding women to grow and work on their faith daily with devotionals that focus on developing the inner and outer self. Daughters of the King uses their international voice to speak to women all across the globe, as the devotionals are offered in numerous languages such as Spanish, French, and Finnish. The app also offers a live ministry with Kesha Trippett on Sundays at 7 p.m., U.S. Eastern standard time, and allows those outside the U.S. to simply correct the time zone for their country. A Simple Favor

Adapted from the novel of the same name, “A Simple Favor” takes audiences on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. For 117 minutes, viewers will find themselves hysterically laughing at off-color jokes, and moments later, biting their fingernails in suspense. The comedy-mystery-thriller is not a film that should be taken seriously, as the practicality of the plot is hilariously unlikely. In the film, Vlogger mom Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) meets fashion PR mom Emily (Blake Lively) at their sons’ school, where the boys ask if they can have a playdate. From that point on, the two women become fast friends who bond over secrets and martinis. One day, for what seems like the hundredth time, Emily asks Stephanie to pick up her son from school. Shockingly (but not really), Emily does not show up that night to pick up her son, leading Stephanie and her husband, Sean (Henry Golding) to file a missing person’s report. From that point, the film takes some surprising- and quite startling- twists and turns, erroneously blending the lines of comedy and thriller. Yet, as aforementioned, the implausibility of the plot makes for great laughs, helping viewers to forget about the film’s awkward blend of genres. Kendrick and Lively make a great duo as foil characters with vastly different approaches to friendship and motherhood. This raunchy film is both predictable and unpredictable, a seemingly purposeful choice by director Paul Feig.
ALBUM REVIEW We’re all familiar with the deep thoughts that wander through our minds, so why do we keep them wrapped up inside? Cory Asbury has crafted a masterpiece of melodies and lyrics in his new album “Reckless Love,” full of unspeakable truths now exposed for the world to hear. by Kendall Ward
When listening to this Christian worship album, its simple truths move the listener. Each song is a story, magnificently intimate while also sustaining the ability to reach the audience on a general level. Some songs are soft and sweet like the taste of honey, while others are empowering and courageous, compelling action.
ARTIST: Cory Asbury ALBUM: Reckless Love
Released earlier this year, “Reckless Love” is his second solo studio album during his partnership with Bethel Music. The single by the same name was released the previous November and topped the charts quickly, landing the number one spot for months. The album embodies Asbury’s journey from boyhood to manhood. In his deft hands, listeners are able to mold the lyrics to their own experiences and attach new meanings, often ending up with intriguing conclusions. We’re looking forward to more of Asbury’s thought-provoking collections in the future.

FREE FIRST FRIDAY Wood & Wire with Buxton by Justin Walker
It will be a night full of music at the Grand Stafford Theater in Downtown Bryan, as Wood & Wire and Buxton will headline a free First Friday concert on Friday, October 5. Wood & Wire, a bluegrass band from Austin, first formed in 2011, and released their self-titled debut album two years later. Since that time, they have have released four more albums, including their most recent, “North of Despair,” in April, 2018. While the band is easily recognizable as a member of the bluegrass genre, they stand apart from others by how well their voices and energys blend together. The diverse background of the band members, including one who grew up playing classical piano, helps bring new sounds and ideas to the forefront. Joining Wood & Wire for the concert is Houston’s own, Buxton. The band’s unique performances, style and sound all play to their strengths. Singer/guitarist Sergio Trevino’s voice is smooth and sensual, which matches the group’s lyrics well. The band uses sound elements similar to love songs of the 80s and 90s, bring nostalgiclike feelings to their original songs. While the two bands are definitely worth seeing, their performances will be magnified thanks to the venue. The Grand Stafford Theater has a rustic charm to it, with three-stories of space to enjoy the nightlife. Bringing that classic, old-school charm will perfectly match the vibes of both groups, as each of the performances will showcase vintage feels.

Lone Star Jam at Lake Bryan KEOS is the area’s hottest non-commercial, community-supported radio station, and now’s the time to show your support! The Lone Star Jam is a benefit concert overlooking the tranquil Lake Bryan, and Sunday, Oct 7 may be your last chance to see this event at the Lakeside Icehouse. The restaurant and venue is now closed to the public, but it’s opening for a day to host the Lone Star Jam. Krista May, President of the KEOS Board of Directors said, “Having it at Lake Bryan in a beautiful outdoor setting with a great view of the water and sunset has been wonderful for us.”
Focused on serving the BCS community, KEOS provides a platform for all kinds of voices and perspectives, both through music and educational content. Driven and produced by volunteers, KEOS depends on community support and connections with residents, businesses and venues. “As of right now, we’re looking for a new venue for next year’s Jam,” May said. “We will miss the Icehouse. We’ve had some of our most successful Jams at the Icehouse, and listeners have told us that they love the venue.”
Part of the Lone Star Music Series, the Jam celebrates the talent and variety of Texas music. You’ll hear local talent and familiar voices. Ride the Panda! opens at 2 p.m., Manzy Lowry Band at 3 p.m., Eugene, Eugene at 4 p.m., Jacob Appelt & Friends at 5 p.m., Brooke Graham at 6 p.m. and Great American Boxcar Chorus at 7 p.m. In addition to being local performers, a couple of the musicians are radio personalities on KEOS. Jacob Appelt presents “Texas Music Workforce” on Monday nights. Eugene Smith plays the piano at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, and he also hosts the KEOS show “Back to Basics” on Saturday nights.
Tickets for the show range between fifteen dollars and seventy dollars for a Ministry Partner ticket. This ticket includes seating in the first few rows, a postconcert photo opportunity with Big Daddy, an exclusive tour pass and much more! Doors to the concert will open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7!
Admission to Lake Bryan is $5 per vehicle, so you may want to arrive early and explore the scenic nature trails and work up an appetite. The doors open at 12, and the suggested donation is $10 for the Jam. Proceeds go to the non-profit radio station KEOS 89.1. Food and drinks will be available at the event. If you haven’t experienced the southwest soulfood offered by the Crafty Pig food truck, grab a Texican Porkadilla (a BBQ pork quesadilla). There will also be a silent auction from noon to 4 p.m. Auction items include date night packages and donations from Stage Center, Star Furniture and La Gabriella Coffee & Pastries. KEOS shirts and tote bags will also be available for purchase.

Kyle Park at Harry’s

Hurricane Harry’s will once again host a incredible show as Kyle aspect to the song, and it shows. Park understands how to bring all of the elements together to create crowd-pleasing music. Park heads to town for a performance on Friday, October 5. Park started his musical journey at the age of 14, when he began playing the guitar. He performed covers with members of George Strait’s band, Ace in the Hole, while in college, eventually forming his own group and leaving school. His debut album, “Big Time,” was released in 2005. He broke onto the US Country album charts with his third album, “The Spring EP,” peaking at 69, as well as reaching number 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers South Central list.
While Park is enough to draw in the crowds, it helps that he’s playing at one of the finest venues in College Station. Hurricane Harry’s is always a great place to listen to good music, hang out with friends and let loose. With great drink specials, billiards and two large dance floors, there’s something for everyone.
Park will take the stage at 10 p.m., but get there early and enjoy a night out. SEC Pitch Competition It all starts with an idea. The greatest businesses and products of our generation all started that way—with an idea. On October 8, students from all across the Southeastern Conference (SEC) will go head to head in presenting their most innovative creations when Texas A&M University’s Mays Business School and the McFerrin Center for Entrepreneurship host the 2018 SEC Student Pitch Competition.
Burns says, “This prize money is a huge boost for most early stage companies...and allows the students to keep pursuing their business. It also allows these student entrepreneurs to experience what it will be like when they’re in front of investors.” An opportunity like this provides students a chance at long-term success with their business.
This competition brings together 14 student entrepreneurship teams, each from a different SEC university, and each with an original product and business concept. Teams of undergraduate and graduate students will pitch their businesses and the reasoning behind them to a panel of highly esteemed judges, who will then evaluate both the presentation itself and how viable the ideas are for the entrepreneurial community.
At the last stage of the competition on Oct 8, the three finalists will present their ideas one more time. Judges will give brief feedback to each team and will ultimately choose one champion. Burns encourages everyone to witness this unique event, saying, “Attendees should look forward to hearing about some truly groundbreaking companies with new technologies that have never been seen before.” Who knows? The next big thing might come straight from this event. Following the awards, be sure to attend the reception to network and talk to the teams. Beyond being beneficial to the student participants, this event displays that entrepreneurship can be for everyone. Students competing have a wide range of majors and interests, from engineering and business to law and pharmaceutical sciences.
A slot at the SEC Pitch Competition is highly coveted, as winning the slot demands intense work and a really fantastic idea. Stephanie Burns, Communications Coordinator at the McFerrin Center for Entrepreneurship, emphasizes how much hard work as well as talent goes into preparation, saying, “students onstage at the SEC Pitch Competition are truly the best pitchers in the SEC.” After a year of preparation, students are selected in advance by their own universities’ entrepreneurship programs. Representing the Texas A&M team at this year’s competition is the group Botrionyx. Burns also says if you attend, you can expect to be impressed. “Not only are [the students] balancing the stresses of college life, but they’re also working hard and trying to launch a business. The teams this year are exceptional and have some really innovative products, but you’ll have to attend the competition to learn more about them!” In addition to providing experience to the students in presenting their products to potential investors, the competition awards $25,000 in total prize money each year.
The McFerrin Center of Entrepreneurship creates special programs and events, such as the pitch competition, to encourage small businesses and shape students, alumni, and faculty in their entrepreneurial skills. Established in 1999, the center has served as Texas A&M University’s homebase for enterprising individuals, so in spite of the huge undertaking for this event, it’s all in a day’s work for Burns and her team. “We’re really excited to invite other SEC schools to Texas A&M and introduce them to Aggieland.” The finals of the SEC Pitch Competition are free and open to the public, but you do need to RSVP on the McFerrin SEC Pitch Competition page. The finals will be held in the All American North Club at Kyle Field at 6:30. Whether you want to feel inspiration from the creativity of individuals in our community or just want to hear about the big ideas the finalists have to offer, all are welcome.

The Fragile Bee Works by Nancy Macko
group exhibitions. In The Fragile Bee exhibit, Macko explores the power of eco-feminism. The theme of the honeybee is one that encompasses gender equality, not one in which the female gender dominates, but one in which we see gender fluidity amongst males and females. Through the honeybee, it is obvious that the female has an important role in the hive culture from the queen to the ferocious worker bees Originally from Long Island, New York, gathering nectar, guarding the hive Nancy Macko has had over twenty solo and honey, and caring for the queen exhibitions and participated in over 140 and larvae. Eco-Feminism is a word used to describe a feminist approach to understanding ecology and examines the connections between women and nature. Nancy Macko, artist and self-proclaimed ecofeminist, draws upon the customs of the honeybee to explore relationships between art, technology, science, and the nature of women’s liberation in her work. Until October 27, The Fragile Bee: Works by Nancy Macko will be presented by the MSC Visual Arts Committee of Texas A&M University free of charge at the MSC Reynolds Gallery on the TAMU campus.

Macko expresses the oppression and subjugation women endure on a daily basis through The Fragile Bee. She visually implies to viewers that the way society views women and the female body is socially constructed. Macko’s work also reveals that even though there are shared constraints females face within our culture, these issues move beyond what society has told us about our bodies. Through this exhibit, the artist shows viewers that the female, in all forms, is capable of encompassing “masculine” roles, for example, being the sole worker in the honeybee environmental culture. With her work in The Fragile Bee, Macko informs viewers that female empowerment is deeper than we know.

Pa Nsaka with Kasonde! “Umusha afwa nefyebo mukanwa” is a Bemba axiom for “a slave dies with words in his/her mouth.” The ability to speak has always been linked to power. It is those in power that havea lways determined what stories are told, when they are told, and who tells them. As the old adage goes, “Until the lion learns how to write, every story will glorify the hunter.”
I come from the Bemba tribe of Northern Zambia. Legend has it that there once was a chief who had committed several transgressions. One transgression was so heinous that justice was immediately demanded by the tribe. The royal court attempted to cover up the crime by scapegoating an innocent man. He tried to seek justice and was subsequently silenced. “Umusha afwa nefyebo mukanwa” is what he was told by the royal handlers. Dignity is robbed from one who perishes without having spoken. In the academic world, the modus operandi is “publish or perish.” The alternative in a just world should be “speak lest you perish.” Embracing the status quo is a human default position that offers a false sense of unity. In the face of immense injustice, most people cower and resign themselves to a place of safety. It takes courage and intentionality to realize true freedom! Henry K. Musoma was born and raised in Zambia. He attended high school in Zambia and Mozambique, then moved to the United States to pursue higher education. Currently a clinical assistant professor and assistant director of the Center for International Business Studies in the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University, he is actively involved in university and community leadership development. His greatest recognition may not be for what he teaches directly, but how he teaches by example. In 2017, he received the first Mays Spirit Award for his act of kindness to a student who couldn’t find a babysitter during class time. He encouraged her to bring the baby to class and held the baby when he became fussy. The incident was posted on Facebook, and as a result, Musoma has received world-wide Pa Nsaka—the physical space in my village that cements our community.

OPAS Brings “The Capitol Steps” to A&M On Thursday, Oct. 11, MSC OPAS will be hosting the political satire comedy show “The Capitol Steps” in Rudder Theater. “The Capitol Steps” pokes fun at the current political atmosphere and does not hold back for either side of the political spectrum, according to Jake Vasquez, student committee chair for MSC OPAS. A cast of 24 different actors and actresses combine humor with the perspectives of many different groups of people. The idea of creating a show based on poking fun at politics started in 1981, when a group of staff members was planning the entertainment for Senator Charles Percy’s Christmas party. “‘The Capitol Steps’ started as a group of staff members for the senate, and it was just a bunch of people who would satirize their
surroundings,” said Vasquez. “Eventually they realized they could turn this into a full comedy satire show about politics.” For 30 years, they have continued to tour and put on weekly shows in D.C. The show’s content is constantly updated to reflect current events in politics. Vasquez explains that to enjoy the show, a love of comedy and knowledge of current political events is a must. If a potential audience member meets both of those criteria, he describes it as “The perfect comedy show.” Tickets may be purchased in person at the MSC Box Office located on the first floor of Rudder Tower, or online at mscopas.org. MSC Forsyth:
“Alphonse Mucha: Master of Art Nouveau” The work of one of the most significant artists of 19th century Europe, Alphonse Mucha, is now on display at the MSC Forsyth Gallery until December 16th. Mucha’s unique style of art is identified as “Art Nouveau,” a style that encompassed both architecture and the decorative arts, and was popular from 1890 - 1910. Characterized by curved lines and flowers, Art Nouveau lends itself well to images of women, which Mucha was famous for painting. One of his lovelist works, the Sarah Bernhardt - Lefevre Utile, is a patron favorite of the “Alphonse Mucha: Master of Art Nouveau” exhibit. In the piece, Mucha uses his stained glass window-esque style of painting to represent the French actress.
With his diverse artistic skill set, Mucha was able to find success in a variety of media spheres, including book illustrations and album covers as well as paintings. Seventy-five of his most beloved works at the Forsyth Gallery represent his talent in a range of artistic mediums, such as lithographs, oil paintings, drawings, posters, portfolios and vases. To see this exhibit, visit the Forsyth Gallery at Texas A&M’s Memorial Student Center. Museum hours are Tuesday – Friday: 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Saturday – Sunday: noon – 6 p.m., and the exhibit is free.

Grab Your Partner for Contra Dance

Contra may not be a “brand new dance,” but it’s more fun than the Cupid Shuffle! All you have to do is follow instructions and enjoy the live music. Dating back to the 1700s, contra has Celtic roots, but it has evolved over the centuries. These days, there’s even techno contra music! John Ivy, fiddler in the Rock Prairie Ramblers, explains that contra dance has made a comeback, nationally in the 1970s and locally in 1996. “It’s popular among youth on the East coast,” Ivy said. “It’s really regional.” Suzanne’s School of Dance hosts contra dance on the first Saturday of each month. Suggested donations are $5 for adults and $3 for students, but there are discounts for new dancers. Stan Swanson is one of four callers in the area, the people who give instructions
aloud like you might hear at a square dance. “It’s not necessary to bring a partner, since we encourage people to switch partners for each dance,” Swanson said. “We do encourage beginners to show up at the start of the dance by Destiny Turner (7 p.m.), since the teaching is cumulative.” Unlike the fixed groups of eight in square dance, the couples circulate in lines, and there’s more opportunity for improvisation. “Contra dance is not as acrobatic as the Aggie Wranglers,” Swanson said. “But both men and women can get a workout.” Jalapeno Honey’s music keeps the dancers moving, and it’s a generally wholesome atmosphere. Alcohol and tobacco products aren’t seen at contra dances, and many cities have their dances in churches.

Set in square dance halls of East Texas, the novel is part of a series co-written by author and editor Rhonda Brinkmann and Professor at Texas A&M University College of Education Cyndi Ricco. For the sake of the dance floor, it’s important that you wear clean shoes that don’t scuff, and high, pointed heels should be avoided.
