APP REVIEW

FREE

Getting that perfect shot is hard, and raking in the likes on social media often requires some editing. We’ve already seen what smartphones can do in place of digital cameras. Now there’s an app to help make all the necessary changes to get your photo trending. “Storyluxe” is a photo and video editing app that allows users to edit posts for all of their social media platforms. Users can select media, filters, background textures and colors to help make their photos pop. Once the look is set, photos can be saved and uploaded to Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and more. A subscription can be purchased to upgrade template, backdrop and filter libraries. The cost is $2.99 a month, which is worth it if you are truly dedicated to the cause. Without the subscription, the app could lose its luster as the available options are limited. If you’re a social media junkie, this app could be useful. Otherwise, save the storage space and stick to the editing features within Insta and Snap.

A Star is Born

by Justin Walker

MOVIE REVIEW It’s difficult to take a classic that has already been reworked two other

times and deliver a great piece, but that’s exactly what happened in the 2018 rendition of “A Star Is Born.” The third remake of the 1937 original features Bradley Cooper on both sides of the camera as he makes his directorial debut. “A Star Is Born” stars Cooper and Lady Gaga as Jackson Maine and Ally, two singersongwriters on very different paths. While Jackson is performing sold-out concerts and battling several addictions, Ally is working as a waitress and moonlighting as a singer at a drag bar. After stumbling upon one of her shows, Jackson manages to get Ally on stage with him, which not only sparks a relationship between the two, but also jumpstarts Ally’s musical career. Cooper and Lady Gaga both deliver outstanding performances, not just as actors, but musically as well. Cooper flawlessly brings yet another issue-riddled character to life on the big screen, as he is surely becoming one of the greatest actors of our time. It’s always a concern when a musician steps in front of the camera for their cinema debut, but Lady Gaga crushed it. Her portrayal of a wanna-be turned superstar is one that is sure to receive some nods come award season. The film deals with several dark themes, including drug addiction, alcoholism and suicide. For a film that lasts longer than two hours, this could leave audiences depressed, but Cooper, from a directive standpoint, bypassed that by adding many upbeat moments, including many laughs in the first half of the film. With a star-studded cast and an exceptional script, “A Star Is Born” may just be the best film of 2018.

ALBUM REVIEW When a musical film starring an award-winning pop star and a well-known and musically-talented actor is released, it’s safe to say the soundtrack will follow shortly. In the case of “A Star Is Born,” the movie and its album both debuted on October 5 to major praise.

by Justin Walker

The soundtrack to “A Star Is Born” features many original songs written or co-written by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, as well as a handful of covers to classics. From upbeat, rock-and-roll feels to emotional ballads, the album matches the tone of the film it accompanies perfectly. The most notable song is the lead single “Shallow,” which was released ahead of the film. Both stars perform the song, while Gaga serves as both co-writer and co-producer on the track. The song features compelling lyrics and powerful vocals.

ARTIST: Lady Gaga ALBUM: A Star is Born

“Black Eyes,” the opening full-length track on the album, is performed by Cooper, who co-wrote the piece with Lukas Nelson, son of Willie Nelson. The rock feel to the song highlights the rough and raspy qualities in Cooper’s voice, while providing a fun and easy listen. The final song, which features a film and extended version, is “I’ll Never Love Again.” The heartfelt ballad is performed by Gaga, who showcases her incredible range across the devastatingly beautiful lyrics. Cooper appears on the film version, adding to the emotion of the track. This is a must-hear soundtrack that everyone will enjoy.

MUSIC

Texas Country is perhaps the most popular genre of music in Bryan-

by Tyra Harris

College Station, but it certainly is not the only prevalent genre in town. While it’s true that dozens of local twenty-somethings attend weekly country concerts at Hurricane Harry’s, rock music, and particularly indie rock and alternative rock, also has a sizable following here. Fans of such music would enjoy seeing the band Screaming Females live in concert. This Friday, country music fans are invited to trade in their cowboy boots and heavy belt buckles for Chuck Taylor’s and leather jackets at the Screaming Females concert at The Grand Stafford Theater in Historic Downtown Bryan. The band, together since their high school years, are on tour, promoting their seventh studio album entitled “All at Once.” For the first time ever, the New Jersey natives incorporate pop-punk beats into their sound. This genre blend can be heard on tracks “I’ll Make You Sorry” and “Soft Domination.” At its peak, “All at Once” reached number 14 on the Billboard US Independent Albums chart and number 2 on the Billboard US Heatseekers chart. The album has received rave reviews from critics, including an A- score from The A.V. Club. The music video for the album’s third track, “I’ll Make You Sorry,”

Parker Mc Co l l u m a nd T h e P o w e l l B rot h e r s

a t H u r r i c a n e H a r r y’s

Hurricane Harry’s consistently serves up fantastic country music in a Texas style venue, but Parker McCollum is arguably one of the most well-known artists they’ve hosted. On October 19, McCollum will be joined by The Powell Brothers in a show that’s sure to please. McCollum is a native-born Texan who explores the blend between country and Americana music. With influences like Steve Earle and Bob Dylan, McCollum’s music toes the line between boot-tapping country and softer rock. His songs invite the listener into his personal stories of heartbreak as he casts his strong vocals over the rhythm of a steady guitar. In 2015, at only 22, Austin-based McCollum’s debut LP “The Limestone Kid” changed his entire life. Thanks to the regional radio success of the single “Meet You in the Middle,” McCollum found himself on the country music scene, touring from city to city. It was quite the shock at such a young age. McCollum released the LP “Probably Wrong” in 2017. The project’s success was built from the popularity of the EP by the same title, and

now McCollum’s rise in the music industry has flown sky-high. In describing “Probably Wrong,” “The Daily Country” says, “Throughout the project, McCollum concentrates (successfully) on writing about what he knows - love, relationships, and life on the road – and does so in a way that nods to tradition all while being contemporary, vivid, and unique.” This album is a much deeper dive into the mind of McCollum. He wrote most of it after his serious relationship ended. Many of the songs such as “Hell of a Year” or “I Can’t Breathe” truly show the pain and struggle with which the artist was wrestling. He has been featured in lists such as “Rolling Stone”’s “New Country Artists You Need To Know” where he was compared to John Mayer. The Powell Brothers, a Houston based up-and-coming country duo, will open the show at 9, and McCollum will take the stage at 10. Tickets to this exciting show are available through Hurricane Harry’s website.

Texas Grand Slam Poetry Night There’s something else in the air, besides the scent of apple cinnamon candles and the faint waft of pumpkin spiced lattes. It’s the spirit of competition. The time is nigh again for intense bouts of slam poetry performances. Poets will compete at several locations in Bryan/ College Station to be the champion of the Eighth Annual Texas Grand Slam Poetry Festival. The festival’s director, Lino Anunciacion, says, “It’s become a staple and tradition in the Texas poetry community, as well as a pilgrimage for many poets outside of the state.” The festival will kick off at Lupa’s Coffee with the “Last Chance Slam” this Thursday night, October 18, at 7. Then, the preliminary and semi-final rounds will begin Friday evening at 5:30. Fortytwo contenders will compete in bouts o the preliminary round at various locations— The Palace, The Village, or Revolution Café and Bar. Festival attendees will have the opportunity to hear crafted work that celebrates diversity, personal experience, and perseverance from passionate poets. Anunciacion highlights the validity of the poet’s various experiences, saying, “I hope that audience members take the time to

listen to the very important narratives and perspectives that each and every poet is going to bring to the stage.” After eighteen poets are dismissed following the preliminary round, the semi-finals will begin that same Friday night at two of the aforementioned locations. Ready for another bout, they will once again compete, with only ten remaining poets moving onto the final competition. The poets who survive both rounds on Friday night will have time to recover before giving it their all on Saturday evening at 7:30 in Rudder Theatre. These finalists will compete in three bouts, after which one will win the title of champion and $1,200. Tickets to see the final event are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Last year, Alex Luu won the coveted title and prize. His poem—“Why You So Extra?” —enters his personal narrative through a colloquially told anecdote. Luu centers his work in his Asian heritage and his supportive family. The competition will be in full swing this weekend at locations all around BCS, culminating on Saturday night. Give yourself a pre-Halloween poetry treat to watch and listen as performance poets battle for the 2018 champion’s title.

Q&A with the P o w e l l B r o t he r s When a country band gets noticed, it can create a perfect storm of constant shows and being on the road, but for Houston-based band The Powell Brothers, who love giving live performances, that’s heaven. Brothers Taylor and Blake Powell, fronts for the band, recently sat down with Maroon Weekly to share what it’s like being an up and coming band, their rise in the country/Americana scene and their feelings about Hurricane Harry’s before their Friday, Oct. 19 performance joining Parker McCollum. Q: How did The Powell Brothers get started? A: Taylor and I have been working in the music industry for years now. We have ran shows, wrote songs, been backups—anything you could think of, we had already done it. In a way we were already prepared to run our own band. We had ran and done things for so many people, and we were content doing that. Out of coincidence, we both ended up moving to Houston and just decided to make a record together, and we just never stopped. We never really planned to do this, but we have seriously enjoyed the ride. It was completely unintentional. We just had all the experience needed, and people kept telling us to give it a shot. We knew the toll this could put on us. We had seen other bands break up, and we had seen bands work really hard and never find success, but we both knew neither of us would ever quit. “Four Wheel Hotel” was the first song we ever put on the radio. There was actually one time we went to Hurricane Harry’s, and the DJ recognized us and played the song. The floor was empty before he played it, and it was really cool to see a bunch of people go on the dance floor and dance to our record.

Would you say Harry’s is a special place for you? by KendallQ: Ward

A: It absolutely is. We love Harry’s. When we are not performing, we love to slip in there. It is one of the coolest places to go to. Q: Talk to me about your EP, “Introducing… The Powell Brothers.” A: So the record was actually co-produced with Granger Smith’s drummer in a garage in Austin, Texas. It was our first studio record. To that point, we really had only done and recorded live stuff, which is easier because it is what it is. You play it and it turns out how you played. Studio records are more difficult because you can hone in on every little detail and you start to overthink things. We are so glad we got to do it. That was just our Texas record. Q: What are the best memories you’ve had so far in your career? A: Well, we’re both Houston boys, so getting to sing the national anthem and play a few shows for the Astros’ games last year was awesome. Also, when we met Paul Franklin. Paul Franklin is THE guy. Anyone in country knows who he is. Getting to meet him and some of the other guys we have met is like high school. These are my high school dreams. One of our favorite moments, we were performing in Padre in front of a crowd of over 1000 people. Someone handed me a beer and the entire crowd was yelling for me to chug. I had to channel my inner college student, and I shotgunned it, and everyone cheered. I never would have dreamed in my life I would get to experience something like that. It was super cool, man. Q: Anything else you’d like readers to know? A: Just come out to the show. It is going to be so much fun! Also, we will have a new record coming out in February. Come on out and hear two Texas native bands on Oct 19! Tickets are available on the Hurricane Harry’s website.

“Steel Magnolias” Laughter, southern accents, and big hair! You bet your bottom dollar! MSC OPAS brings you Robert Harling’s comedy-drama, “Steel Magnolias.” On October 24 at 7:30 p.m., the doors to Rudder Tower at Texas A&M University will open for this heart-wrenching yet hilarious play. Many will already know the story of “Steel Magnolias” because of the 1989 film starring Shirley MacLaine, Sally Fields, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton, a young Darryl Hannah, and the then barely known woman that turned into America’s sweetheart—Julia Roberts. Roberts’ performance, combined with the power of the story, gained a dedicated fan base for both the actress and the film.

Shelby Eatenton (Julia Roberts) is a member of the salon and a struggling diabetic whose pregnancy puts her at dire risk. This deeply touching play is a reminder that we are stronger together because we all have a similar need for friendship. “Steel Magnolias” reveals how companionship and a shared emotional connection is needed when individuals are facing difficult situations. It also shows how even in the darkest times, laughing amongst friends can usually put a comical spin on things. The play was an instant hit when Harling’s original Off- Broadway play opened

Based on the true story of Harling’s sister, Susan, who passed away on March 28, 1987 at the WPA theater in New York City.
