APP REVIEW
FREE
Now is the season for stews and crisps, but have you ever wondered how to “kick it up a notch,” as Emeril says? Yummly is a free recipe app that is just short of having a sous chef in the kitchen. It sources recipes from foodies and blogs all over the internet, providing an online recipe collection that the user is able to customize. When you create an account, Yummly asks for the cook’s selfassessed skill level, preferred cuisine, and dietary restrictions. Then, the algorithm gets to work and suggests recipes in the “Just for You” section. The “Yum” button saves the recipe to an easily accessible collection. Once a recipe is selected, the cook will see a list of ingredients, cook time, and calorie count like other websites. Yummly facilitates a digital grocery list and cooking timers set for a targeted mealtime. The cook must then press the “Get Directions” button, which links the user to the recipe’s website to read the instructions. Yummly also provides guided recipes, which include an ingredients list, videos that demonstrate each step and technique, and smartphone notifications that provide cooking timers to keep the cook on track. With Yummly, you can be closer on your way to becoming a Julia Child in the kitchen—and search her recipes in the process.

MOVIE REVIEW
The Mission: Impossible franchise has returned with an actionpacked bang! Mission: Impossible-Fallout will hit you with an array of emotions, making you laugh, cry, and be utterly surprised by the film. The characters that audiences have grown to love within the franchise return with an all new adventure and fresh characters that add a modern and exciting spin to the story. Once again, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) has the fate of the world in his hands as he fights to stop nuclear bombs and a mysterious arms dealer. Functioning under a specialized unit of the government, Hunt works alongside his lovable and quirky sidekicks, Luther (Ving Rhames) and Benji (Simon Pegg). Thrown into the mix of this sixth installment of Mission: Impossible is new and unwelcome partner Walker (Henry Cavill) and the alluring White Widow (Vanessa Kirby). Audiences will not be disappointed by this addition to the franchise and will be on the edge of their seats with each extreme fight scene. Thrown into the chaos of all the action are moments of perfectly timed comedic relief. Old fans of the Mission: Impossible franchise will enjoy the notes of nostalgia, while new fans will quickly be captured by Ethan Hunt’s escapades. Rated PG-13, Mission: Impossible-Fallout is a great movie to watch with friends or for a date night. This action film has it all!
ALBUM REVIEW
While other artists have come and gone, TobyMac has stayed consistently on the musical radar while continuously growing as an artist. His new album, “The Elements,” highlights that growth.
by Justin Walker
In this set of songs, TobyMac tells a story of life. The album title signifies the challenges we face in life, which is highlighted by the song “Scars.” He reminds listeners to turn to God in “I just need U” and “It’s You” and reassures us that God can get us through the tough times in “The Elements” and “See The Light.” ARTIST: TobyMac ALBUM: The Elements
TobyMac once again uses a variation of methods to deliver his lyrics, including pop, soul and a mix of singing and casual rapping. This adds character to each song and allows for each track to have its own identity while still existing within the overarching message of the album. “The Elements” is a great album to listen to. Whether you’re going through a rough patch or just want to feel empowered, check out TobyMac’s new release.

MUSIC
Downtown Bryan will once again have a great evening of music as the Zack Walther Band will be performing at the Grand Stafford Theater on Thursday, October 25. The New Braunfels-based band will bring their Americana-influenced sound that can both rock an audience and soothe the soul. The diversity of music within the band’s performance is done beautifully, and results in a wide variety of fans. Just as the nature of their songs can be polarizing, so too is lead guitarist and vocalist Zack Walther’s voice. With deep and soulful tones in one song, to strong, high notes in the next, Walther can captivate any audience with just one line. Joining Walther on the stage is Matthew Briggs on drums and piano, Shawn Hart on bass and vocals, and, as of recently, Mike Atkins on keys. Walther and Briggs go back to elementary school, and have been performing together since junior high. That long-term relationship shows as the two have incredible chemistry on stage. In the past 15 years, the Zack Walther Band has released or collaborated on 12 studio and live albums, and can currently be

heard on two outdoor shows on television. The success of the band can be contributed to the hard work and never-give-up attitude of each member. The Grand Stafford Theater is the perfect place for the Zack Walther Band to perform. The venue has a great atmosphere and the setup of the stage further promotes audience engagement. The classic charm of the Grand Stafford, coupled with the rock and Americana vibe of the band, is sure to make for a great show.

This is the first year that Main Street Market will occur in Bryan. They hope to make it an annual affair at the Brazos County Expo Center. Another appeal of this market is the hourly door prizes that guests can win by attending. Campbell shared that this event took around a year to plan, and she says, “Along with the work we are doing to invite everyone, they are doing the same by inviting their friends and family to visit them at the show. We have been working closely with our contacts in the area, learning about what your shoppers are looking for, and I believe this show will bring them just what they have been asking for.” With all the hard work going into Main Street Market, we hope to see a lot of people out there supporting Texas vendors. The holidays are right around the corner too, so pick up your gifts for friends at Main Street Market! Admission is $5 for adults or $4 if you bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the food bank. Children under 12 will receive free entry, and parking will be ample and free! The market will be open Saturday, October 27, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday, October 28, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

WILLIAM CLARK GREEN AT H U R R I C A N E H A R R Y ’ S The City of College Station has reared some considerably influential and groundbreaking people. Among them are “The Father of the Green Revolution” Norman Borlaug, former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and “Modern Family” actor Rico Rodriguez. On Friday, October 26, residents can welcome another hometown hero, William Clark Green, as he performs new hits from his album “Hebert Island” at Hurricane Harry’s. Green describes his upcoming concert as a “homecoming,” happily explaining that his teachers and friends from A&M Consolidated High School always come and support him at concerts in town. An experienced musician, Green began writing songs in the eighth grade. “I learned to play guitar at St. Mary’s Catholic Church,” says Green, in reference to the historic chapel at the corner of Church Avenue and Nagle Street. Upon graduating high school, Green enrolled at Texas Tech University, where he studied Agricultural Economics. Throughout his collegiate career, Green continued to pursue his musical endeavors, and at age 22, released his first studio album. Fast forward to 10 years later, and Green has released his fifth studio album entitled “Hebert Island.” The album’s title is given in homage to Green’s grandmother, whose maiden name was Hebert (pronounced A-Bear).
When asked what sets “Hebert Island” apart from his previous albums, Green said, “The vocals are more present” and that this album includes “3-4 part harmonies, which I’ve never done before.” Stimulated by ordinary, mundane experiences, Green says he was “inspired by everyday life and the crazy world we live in” when writing “Hebert Island.” He prefers not to classify his music by styles, saying that he is “not limited by genre. It’s up to the audience to decide whether my music is rock and roll or country or folk. I don’t like to be boxed in to one particular genre.” Rather than sticking to one particular musical category, Green chooses to just “create music that amplifies song writing.” His first single from “Herbert Island,”“Hit You Where It Hurts” has gotten over a million streams on Spotify. During its debut week, “Herbert Island” was the number 1 record on the iTunes Country charts. Green promises a “fun and crazy” show to fans, so don’t miss the opportunity to rock out with this hometown star! Tickets can be purchased here: https://www.etix.com/ticket/p/2425645/ william-clark-green-college-station-hurricane-harrys Note: Must be 18+ years of age to attend this event.

WRITE A NOVEL IN NOVEMBER Have you wanted to write a novel but don’t know where to start? Look no further than the Bryan/ College Station Wrimos writing group! For two decades, the international, non-profit organization NaNoWriMo—short for National Novel Writing Month—invites those who are interested in writing a full-length novel to write every day during the month of November. By the end of the month, dedicated Wrimos will have written a 50,000-word novel. The Bryan/ College Station Wrimos group is one of 650 participating regions worldwide. It was established in 2002 by the NaNoWriMo organization and is run by two volunteer municipal liaisons, Summer Wilson and Madeline Turnipseed. Wilson says of the local group, “I think BCS Wrimos is a unique addition to our community because it’s open and encompassing. It’s one place where differences between beliefs are put aside for the common goal of writing together and sharing our love of writing…” The group welcomes writers in every stage of the process, including those who do not hope to publish, which sets it apart from other local writing groups. The BCS Wrimos group creates a writing community that includes everyone from aspiring authors to those who “love telling stories,” according to Wilson. Such inclusivity welcomes those who would like to write a novel just for fun. Wilson suggests that the best way for a newcomer to get involved is by attending the local events, which are held in October and November and are posted on their website. The next upcoming event is “Getting to Know Us! Intro to NaNo and BCS Wrimos” on Saturday, October 20, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Clara B. Mounce
Public Library in Bryan. This event provides an opportunity for newbies to learn more about the national and local groups and ask any questions they may have. Then, the second session of “Planning Brainstorming”—where those interested can get help preparing for the rigorous writing ahead— meets on October 24 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m at The Village Cafe & Art979 Gallery. The BCS Wrimos welcome the month of November with the “Kick off Party” at the Bryan IHOP on October 31, beginning at 10 p.m. Writers are welcome to arrive in costume, and will be able to celebrate NaNoWriMo and Halloween in the same night! The anticipatory evening promises writerly conversation and games over a plate full of pancakes. The event culminates at midnight when the wrimos write their first words. To keep those fingers typing the daily word count set by NaNoWriMo, the BCS Wrimos hosts official write-ins throughout November: weekend writeins on Sunday afternoons, A&M campus write-ins on Tuesday evenings, and mid-week write-ins on Wednesday nights—except for the day before Thanksgiving. According to Wilson, write-ins are the most important events for the BCS Wrimos. She says, “There is something special about a group of people being in a room, creating together, that seems to give everyone a bit of a ‘power up,’ creatively and productivity wise.” Do you want to get that story you keep thinking about down on paper, while joining a community of writers who love the art of language? Join BCS Wrimos at one of their many events designed to give aspiring writers the opportunity to get that novel written in the month of November. Wilson recommends joining in by registering at NaNoWriMo.org and then joining the Bryan-College Station region. Write that novel in November!

MCFERRIN METHODS: Ta p p i n g i n t o t h e C ro w d
by Kendall Ward
Do you have a million dollar idea? Do you know how to share it? The world is forever growing, changing, and improving, and it needs your ideas to move forward smoothly. But where do you start? The McFerrin Center for Entrepreneurship has designed a combination of entrepreneurial-focused curricular and experiential opportunities to help with such dilemmas, and the McFerrin Methods workshops are a great place to get your feet wet. The final event of this fall’s Methods series, Tapping into the Crowd, will be held Thursday, November 1, from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. in Rudder Tower, Rm. 601. Sophia Bishop, Program Coordinator with McFerrin, states that the name of the workshop, Tapping into the Crowd, stems from wordplay on the concepts of crowdfunding and crowdsourcing. Bishop says, “Using crowdfunding gives you the ability to be more creative in solving problems in many industries, and our speaker, Jaime Raijman, has experience in multiple crowdfunding campaigns where he has raised over 1.5 million for novel products. He specializes in giving individuals realistic expectations for running successful crowdfunding campaigns.” Proof that Raijman knows what he is talking about can be found in a fast-growing Houston startup called Knocki, which under Raijman’s leadership became Kickstarter’s most funded Texas technology company.
12 MAROON WEEKLY // Oct 23, 2018 // MAROONWEEKLY.COM
The workshop will focus on today’s society and how the internet plays a major role in advancing ideas, business and societal change. Crowdsourcing and crowdfunding can be major components in today’s entrepreneurial scene, so if you have even an inkling that you might one day want to start your own business, come sit in on this McFerrin event and learn. “Crowdfunding can be a not-so-easy concept to grasp,” says Bishop. “So we’re trying to apply crowdfunding to more of a student perspective. We want to help students think outside the box and do something with their own business without seeking large investments, and to encourage them to try this out themselves. We’re hoping that anyone attending will become more confident in approaching crowdfunding for their own problems, ventures and goals.” The McFerrin Center for Entrepreneurship has a history of helping entrepreneurs learn, grow, and connect with the right resources. Begun back in 1999 with the desire to enhance the Texas A&M and BCS area through innovative ideas and education, the center provides training, networking, and assistance to those seeking help, and has also given businesses start-up acceleration, competitive opportunities, and work experiences. Thus the McFerrin Method workshops are one of the best places to go when you don’t know how to begin moving forward. Whether you’ve got your idea drawn out with a detailed plan or you’ve never even imagined yourself as an entrepreneur, McFerrin Methods workshops invite anyone and everyone—from students of any major to the general public. The Methods series was created to provide potential entrepreneurs with the skills and tools to empower their ideas and to assist with communicating those ideas in a clear and concise manner. Methods workshops are an excellent place to network, meet people, ask questions, and get familiar with the entrepreneurial atmosphere, if you’re not already. Attending this event could potentially open doors, so why not go and see? The workshop is free, but you will need to RSVP on the McFerrin Center for Entrepreneurship website.

DATING ON HALLOWEEN:
Hot and Spooky Ideas for a Night Out Halloween is a spooky time of year, full of scares, frights and candy. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still find the time to show your person you love them. Bryan/College Station is full of great opportunities to go on a date and still celebrate the Halloween holiday. Nothing says love like wine. Nothing says spooky like a cellar. That means the perfect Halloween date will take place at the Messina Hof Spooky Cellar Tour on Friday, October 26. Couples can take a tour of the estate while learning the history of the winery. Tour guides will be on hand to share tales and folklore of the area. Attendees can learn how Messina Hof grows and ferments their grapes to produce their award-winning wines. Four different varieties will be on hand for couples to taste directly from tanks and barrels. Special Halloween labeled wines will be available to purchase. The tour begins at 6:30 and tickets cost $25.
Problem solving is crucial in a relationship. The Fightin’ Texas Aggie Corn Maze offers an opportunity for couples to work together in a fun environment. Located on F&B Road, the event includes a corn maze, pumpkin and vegetable patch and farm equipment demonstrations. The attraction is only open on weekends, and is subject to cancellation due to weather. Tickets are $7, so it’s a relatively inexpensive way to spend time with your loved one. A frightful situation is a great way to bring two people closer together, and haunted houses are a great source of terror. The Monster’s Bash and Haunted House takes place on Thursday, October 25, at the Lincoln Recreation Center on Eleanor Street in College Station. Activities will include the haunted house, carnival games and a special Michael Jackson “Thriller” dance presented by Ray Brooks of POP entertainment. The event is free, and doors open at 5:30.

“Soweto Gospel Choir”
by Destiny Turner
by Destiny Turner Traveling 8,867 miles from South Africa, the Soweto Gospel Choir will be bringing a taste of what gospel music sounds like when it comes from the motherland! Their unique blend of African gospel with a tropical reggae sound comes to Bryan/ College Station on October 30 at 7:30 p.m at Rudder Auditorium. The Soweto Gospel Choir is made up of just over forty of South Africa’s finest gospel artists and was created to show listeners how African gospel music can inspire listeners all across the globe. Established in November of 2002 by David Mulovhedzi and Beverly Bryer, the choir started with humble beginnings, releasing their first album “Voices of Heaven” in December of 2002. Within
three weeks, the album reached the number one spot on Billboard’s World Music Chart, making them a worldwide phenomenon. The choir continues to sell out concerts even after 16 years. After their first album, successes came from left and right for this very talented choir. The choir’s powerful voices, accompanied with their ability to move a crowd, has given Soweto Gospel Choir opportunities to perform with legendary performers like Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, and Stevie Wonder. This talented choir has made guest appearances on “Light Night with Conan O’Brien” and “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” and sang for Prince Harry during his visit to South Africa.
18 MAROON WEEKLY // Oct 23, 2018 // MAROONWEEKLY.COM
They have won numerous awards: an Emmy, two Grammys, three SAMA and one Oscar nomination. Along with being an extremely talented choir, their efforts go beyond being successful performers. Soweto Gospel Choir contributes to generous philanthropic work benefitting numerous countries and organizations and notably began one of their own, an AIDS foundation for orphaned children. Nkosi’s Haven Vukani assists organizations that receive little to no funding. For more information about this fierce choir and ticket prices, visit www. sowetogospelchoir.com

The Theatre Company Brings Back a Cult Classic It’s spooky season. The time of year with scares, chills, and thrills. Recurring halloween movies, T.V. specials, and haunted houses litter the month, and every year, The Theatre Company joins in on the festivities. This time around, on Oct. 26-28, they will put on the “The Rocky Horror Show,” a remake of the cult classic movie from the ‘70s. “The Rocky Horror Show” is unlike any other horror show. For the few who haven’t heard of it, it’s a mix of sci-fi, horror, comedy, and rock and roll that expects the audience to participate in reciting the lines and singing along with the music. In fact, becoming involved in the production is a large part of the fun of it and part of what has made it so successful over the last 40 years. “It is a very weird show,” says Adrienne Dobson, the artistic director at The Theatre Company. Weird it is indeed. It’s a double spoof—first on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, but then also on 1950s societal expectations. The story follows Brad and Janet, newlyweds who find themselves in the wrong place at a very wrong time. When their car breaks down, they are stuck in a creepy castle where they meet Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite who confronts their 1950s conventions in some very interesting ways. When the film first premiered in the US in 1975, it brought a new sense of freedom for many and offered a place to
feel included. Thousands related to the film’s edginess, and audiences couldn’t get enough of it, often standing for hours in lines that snaked through several city blocks. Dobson describes The Theatre Company’s production as very “nostalgic and cliche 1950s horror,” continuing that while this production is consistent with the original story, the company has taken a bit of artistic license. “The crowd is encouraged to yell and laugh just like the movie or any other production of Rocky Horror. But our style of the show is very different. The past couple of times we stuck to the grungy, underground aesthetic.” This time, however, Dobson states that the cast looks more “boujee” and “shiec” instead of just grimy and dirty. Much of the choreography and staging mirrors past performances that Dobson has been part of, but thanks to the talent of the superior cast, the feel and take are very new. “The cast for this show is fantastic,” Dobson says. “Our Dr. Frank-N-Furter, who is an A&M student, Tyer Lewis, is incredible. This is his first show with us, and he is just knocking it out of the park.” Tickets for this show and all Bryan Theater Company shows can be bought in the individual ticket section on the theater company’s website.
