One of the hottest indie bands in the Lone Star, Alpha Rev has toured nationwide and soundtracked the silver screen. They’re bringing their high-energy show to Grand Stafford Theater w/ Quiet Company & The Reynolds Number on October 24. We caught up with AR’s Casey McPherson to discuss the music, the band’s humble beginnings, and even Miley Cyrus.
my class, and I did not win the lottery—in fact, I was from a small town and a big nerd growing up. So those feelings of alienation, the need to belong, and the desire to be happy with who I am, run throughout the music.
MW: Let’s start with “Sing Loud”, your most recent single from Bloom that you released earlier this year. What went into the writing?
AR: You start with whatever you’ve got, and you slowly go over and over it until it begins to unfold. It’s like carving something out of a block of wood. It takes a lot of time and dedication, but it’s a blast!
AR: This song was a collaboration, based around difficulties we all have in relationships. I used a lot of metaphors in this song speaking to how we’re all going to fight, but eventually, we all have the chance for unity and freedom. I was frustrated with the fighting in my relationships. I can be a real selfish guy. The other element was the desire for complete freedom or arrival away from that selfishness and conflict, for the feeling of “Ahhh…I’m here; no more trying.” MW: What do you guys draw from when you begin to put a song together? AR: Often, we’re drawing from a melody, a feeling, or a sound. It really all depends on what comes out. Every song is a hidden gem you’re digging for, in yourself, and in others around you. I feel certain aspects of life pretty strongly, like most people do. I tend to feel darker emotions more that happier ones, but that’s starting to change. Music is also very spiritual for me. I was not on the football team, I was not the head of
MW: Where do you start and how do you pull it together?
MW: You also have a hit song, “New Morning”, with a video that did well and was featured on the soundtrack for Miley Cyrus’s movie The Last Song. What was it like having your work featured on the silver screen?
most memorable places you’ve played? AR: My favorite place to play was Red Rocks in Colorado. What a beautiful venue. It’s the equivalent of playing outside in the mountains. MW: With all the touring, have you guys had time to work on any new music? AR: Yes. I’m in Minneapolis right now for a show tonight, and we’re going to be writing all day before our load-in/ soundcheck. MW: Sorry, but we have to go back to Miley Cyrus: What do you think of the rollercoaster she’s on?

I still have yet to see this one, though; I’m more into the shoot’em up flicks. MW: You guys have been doing a lot of touring it seems, playing shows all over Texas and you have some shows coming up in New York and Boston. What are some of the

AR: I think we all go on a rollercoaster around that time in life. I certainly don’t fault her for the desire to act out. It’s just unfortunate that so many girls look up to her, as she’s using her body to sell her music and her brand, which I think sells her short. Maybe one day we’ll all value intelligence and ingenuity over money and fame. Until then, I’m getting a lottery ticket after my botox, as soon as I get back from my twerkout at the gym!

Originally debuted earlier this year, Silverstein has re-released their sixth album with an additional seven tracks (four acoustic renditions and three brand new renditions). Frontman Shane Told describes the album as an unorthodox approach to a standard, story-built track list. Rather than a common theme, the 14 original tracks tell seven different stories with a parallel alternate angle for each story—one song per angle.

“Overall, the point of this album is not to prove the existence of fate, or to disprove it. It’s a discussion of life, of loss, of success within failure, of failure within success, of the struggle between your actions and your feelings, and how those don’t always go together,” said Told. The album pushes boundaries set by chart-topping acts such as Avenged Sevenfold and Papa Roach. Told’s ear-piercing vocals span the range between vocal-cord-shredding screamo to aggressive boy-band, establishing a signature tenor and ferocity. Two of the new additions to the re-released album—the tracks “I Will Illuminate” and “Kill the Lights”—have mirrored effects on each other. These two, coincidentally, have the most cumulative downloads and spike in popularity of the whole 21-track set (this probably helped the push for a re-release). The addition of the acoustic renditions of former tracks also adds depth to the album and a much needed balance to Told’s overtly deep lyricism.

Release Date: Oct. 11, 2013 Ten years since his emergence as a solo singer/songwriter on Chariot—an album that reached platinum status in the states—DeGraw has grown evermore restless in his craft. His ability to push the boundaries of creativity within the industry leaves him constantly grasping for deeper, richer expression. Make a Move brandishes the now-so-typical trademarks of the New York-native: soul, blues, heartbreak, and the occasional power-ballad. Even with growth in his vocals and the strength of his lyrics (showcased in tracks like “Best I Ever Had”), the album shows an artist with even more class, pairing strings, brass, and heavy percussion in these songs in intelligent ways that force you to press the download button. “See You Tonight”
Release Date: Oct. 15, 2013 Scotty McCreery—winner of American Idol Season 10—has released his second studio album (not including his Christmas record) with a title track that sat high on the country charts since its debut. His initial album was certified platinum nationwide and won him Best New Artist from the American Country Awards and the Academy of Country Music. See You Tonight shows us a more polished version of the Carolina-rooted vocals that won him a golden ticket to Hollywood. The album is already sitting atop the iTunes country chart, derailing Luke Bryan’s summer release and projecting it into future platinum status. The disc’s title track—released weeks ago—has been sitting in the top ten country downloads since going live. The 13-song track list, with a majority co-written by Scotty, gives listeners a richness far beyond the singer’s actual years in the business. Recommended Tracks: Get Gone with You, Feelin’ It

“Devotion: Vital”
Release Date: Oct 15, 2013 The only thing negative we can say about this new Christian-Alt release is that it’s slightly confusing. Vital is intended to be the new release. However, a two-disc rendition of the album with extra songs and some live versions was released a day earlier under the name “Devotion.” Devotion contains all of the 12 tracks on Vital plus an additional 19. We’ll focus on Vital being the primary release, a record where the band returned to their former producer, Aaron Sprinkle, to help them create the most aesthetically aggressive album of their career. Lead singer Stephen Christian reignites the passion behind the vocals which gives Anberlin their trademark indie, electro-pop rock sound. Whether you go for the main feature or the extended (early?) release, you’ll hear a polished sound from a band that’s gone back to their roots—much to their acclaim. 2 CELLOS By Dani Wilkins Putting a label on Croatian cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser would be unfair to the artists and the music they produce. Formally trained and pop-inspired, 2CELLOS cover of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” landed the two performers viral celebrity status; within a week, they landed a touring gig with Elton John and a record deal with Sony Masterworks. Elton John has adamantly cheered them on, telling audiences to “Go and see them live, because it really is astonishing! I can’t remember seeing anything as exciting as them since I saw Jimi Hendrix live back in the 60s.” Their records are full of instrumental pieces infused with poppy, upbeat, and wonderfully done covers of “With or Without You”, “Smells like Teen Spirit”, and “Welcome to the Jungle”, in addition to many more. While pop covers landed them on Glee, the Ellen DeGeneres show, and into the ear buds of millions, the two are classically trained and talented. In a recent performance, the duo opened with a version of “Benedictus” that was said to bring tears to the audience. Their application of cellos across multiple genres is remarkable. They easily transform from classical musicians into rock stars, and they’re the kind of eccentric ensemble that draws diverse crowds. PEGASUS GETS NEW WINGS
NASA may have been shut down for a moment, but aerospace engineers at Texas A&M have been working on an unmanned air system known as Pegasus I non-stop. Dr. John Valasek, a professor in the Aerospace Engineering department, leads the research team responsible for designing and building Pegasus I and its successors. The Unmanned Air System, also known as a UAS, has been flying for more than a year now and is currently patent pending. Pegasus I was designed by students in Aerospace capstone classes for vehicle design with the intention of fulfilling an industry and government necessity. Under Valasek’s supervision, graduate and undergraduate research assistants built and even operated Pegasus I in the Vehicle Systems and Control Laboratory. Valasek is the director of this laboratory, as well as the Center for Autonomous Vehicles and Sensor Systems (CANVASS). It was here the research team built the 11-foot long, 12-foot wingspan aircraft with a 20-pound payload. Pegasus I, a fixed-wing UAS, was also designed to have a one hour flight endurance, multiple and overlapping control systems to increase flight safety, and a single piston engine pushing out 9.7 horsepower. Its main purpose was to provide a resilient, cost-efficient guinea pig for studying advanced control law and sensor concepts. All flight testing of Pegasus occurs at the Riverside Campus in the Unmanned Flight Laboratory and is funded by the Raytheon Company and the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research. Pegasus I has two brothers named (you guessed it) Pegasus II and Pegasus III that have been undergoing test flights as well. Pegasus II shed some pounds compared to its predecessor but shares many of the same specs as Pegasus I, including the engine. Pegasus III is both the youngest and littlest of the three, but got a slight upgrade, running off an electric engine. There are also big plans for further expanding of the Pegasus UAS family.

By Amanda L. Reynolds The Patranella family has enjoyed Sunday dinners together after church for years and years. Italian recipes have been passed down through generations, and luckily for the B/CS area, Loretta Patranella decided to share her beloved family recipes with the rest of the community. Loretta, along with her daughter, Meredith, run this small café and bakery in Downtown Bryan, serving lunch and sweet treats during the week and the occasional First Friday dinner. We firmly believe in testing out the basics at a restaurant. We postulate that if a restaurant can’t nail the basics, there’s probably little hope for anything else on the menu. With that theory, we ordered spaghetti and meatballs ($9.99), because what’s more rudimentary than that? The marinara sauce was sweet and delightful, not overly laden with dried herbs, thick but not chunky, and generous. The old family recipe, called suga, is cooked for at least 6 hours. After baking the hand-rolled meatballs in the oven, they are allowed to take a lengthy swim in the suga as well. A hearty chunk of the meatball and a forkful of the perfectly cooked noodles drenched in sauce makes for the perfect bite. The Chicken Milanese with Alfredo sauce ($12.99) might have even topped the spaghetti and meatballs. Patranella’s uses fresh breadcrumbs to coat the outside of a thin chicken breast. Perfectly cooked noodles are liberally coated

in homemade Alfredo sauce with a heavy garlic influence.
mouth is topped with crispy bacon, cheese, and homemade potato chips.
We would be remiss if we didn’t talk about Patranella’s spectacular sides. On Thursdays, pan-fried broccoli is a must-order. Perfectly seasoned flour encrusts broccoli and allows it to become tender but not soggy. Another vegetable favorite, okra patties, arose from a family recipe created as a result of an overabundance of garden bounty. We didn’t get to sample it, but her description of the okra and onion concoction has guaranteed another Patranella’s a visit on an upcoming Friday.
Even though the portions at Patranella’s are more than hearty, do yourself a favor and make sure to save room for dessert. We’re sure you’ll notice, during your meal, two full cases of desserts staring at you. On our visit, the red velvet cookie sandwich ($2.75) called our names from within the display case. Even though we were stuffed, we had to have a bite. The soft texture of the cookies and the cream cheese icing were perfectly delicate and delicious.
While the menu changes every day, they have sandwich and soup offerings that remain constant. The tomato basil soup is one of the best in town. The smooth texture with a hint of cream and loads of fresh basil make it well rounded and light enough to be enjoyed even in warm weather. The Patranellas have gone so far as to begin growing fresh basil by the restaurant to make sure they always have an endless supply. The potato soup with slow cooked chunks of potato that melt in your

3. Stir together remaining ¼ cup milk and flour; stir into squash mixture. Bring to boil; cook until thickened, 2 to 3 minutes. 4. Stir in 1 ½ cups of Fontina until melted. BUTTERNUT SQUASH MAC AND CHEESE If it was socially acceptable to gnaw into a pumpkin, we know some people who would do it. But instead of biting into a giant gourd, try our newest menu of fall favorites. A new take on a childhood classic and a sweet treat for All Hallows Eve, these recipes are sure to be the furthest thing from scary on your pocketbook, too. Ingredients: • 12 ounce box of dried rigatoni or fusilli pasta • 1 ½ pounds butternut squash, peeled, seeded and cut into chunks (3 ½ cups) • 2 ¾ cups milk • ¼ cup all-purpose flour • 8 ounces shredded Fontina cheese • 8 slices bacon • 2 small sweet onions, cut into chunks • 3 ounces sourdough bread • 2 tablespoons butter, melted • fresh parsley (for garnish)
5. Meanwhile, in a very large skillet cook bacon until crisp; drain on paper towels. Crumble; set aside. Pour off all but 2 tablespoons bacon drippings. Return skillet to the heat. 6. Add onions to skillet; cover and cook over low heat 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Uncover and increase heat to high. Cook 4 to 6 minutes more, stirring, until onions are golden brown and soft. 7. Add squash-cheese mixture, onions, and bacon to the bowl with the pasta. Toss well to combine, and then transfer to prepared baking dish. 8. Place bread in a food processor and pulse with two or three on/off turns to form large coarse crumbs (you should have about 2 cups). Transfer to a small bowl; mix with melted butter. Sprinkle remaining Fontina and the breadcrumbs over pasta mixture. Bake until top is browned, about 14 to 15 minutes. Sprinkle with fresh parsley for a touch of green.

Kappa Sigma Wicked Woods Kappa Sigma Fraternity at Texas A&M is hosting the 18th Annual Wicked Woods event featuring the 5th largest haunted trail in the state of Texas. However, in the middle of the Circus lies something even more sinister. If you ever watched It as a child, clowns forever became terrifying, horrible creatures in your mind afterward. Gunner Z: Free at the Apple Store By Topher Hawkes The Walking Dead returned to TV last Sunday and with Halloween on the “horror”izon, many people have zombie hunting on the brain. Bit Monster offers plenty of zombie-killing fun in its new free game, Gunner Z, which is now available at the Apple Store. While there are legions of zombie hunting and survival games out there, Gunner Z adds a creative twist to the formula. In this fight, players man a turret mounted atop an armored assault truck. This isn’t just any turret; it’s actually a modified boom arm which players can lower or raise for better vantage points and attach a variety of weapons to—including machine guns, rockets, grenades or more. While most games in this genre are usually splattered with blood and gore, Gunner Z takes a different approach. The game takes place in pitch black conditions, and zombie attackers only appear as white animations in what Bit Monster touts as “night-vision combat.” Nothing is lost here though, since animations are done very well. Zombies crawl or stumble towards the gunner, swarming from all directions as pressure builds to eliminate the most immediate threat. It’s easy to find yourself surrounded by a zombie horde in a short amount of time if you neglect to perform a proper scan of the area.

Controls are simple: swiping or touching the screen moves the cross hairs. A display on the left allows players to switch weapons and to fire the one selected. Despite experience with many first-person shooters, it did take some effort to adapt to the vertical control scheme. It’s nothing major, but there is a little bit of a learning curve. At the start of each level, players are transported to a designated location by a computer-controlled driver. After the action begins, gamers must eliminate the oncoming threat and survive the round. If successful, they are rewarded with money and items which can be used to upgrade weapons, add vehicles, and raise attributes. After playing a few levels, it’s possible to have a garage of assault trucks with their own unique loadouts and upgrades. Enemies aren’t just limited to zombies. During fights, players come across a military force that deploys armored vehicles, undead soldiers, biological beasts, drones, tanks and more. Sometimes saving an extra rocket or two can help take down these enemies, but all threats can be eliminated with the standard machine gun.

Adult children of divorce is the subject of this indie comedy that apparently snuck into theaters. The cast makes this TV-looking indie a breezy sit. Adam Scott plays the titular adult child, and he’s very quickly thrown into the nightmare of negotiating a truce between his squabbling divorced parents so they can both show up to his brother’s (Clark Duke) wedding. His dad (Richard Jenkins) is now married to a much younger snob (Amy Poehler), and his mother (Catherine O’Hara) is also remarried (Ken Howard). Along the way he discovers the therapist (Jane Lynch) he saw as a child was actually a researcher writing a book about children of divorce. The set-up is simple, and the movie plays all these comedy stalwarts against each other scene after scene in a classic comedy-of-remarriage formula that Hollywood’s been using since the ‘30s. Not bad for a movie nobody’s talking about.
As long as horror classics are going to keep getting remade every couple decades, it’s nice to see directors like Kimberly Peirce at the helm. Her Carrie adaptation does the material (Stephen King’s novel and Brian DePalma’s ‘70s film) proud. Not even the weak casting of Chloe Grace Moretz as the blossoming outcast is a distraction. Moretz isn’t great at enunciation, but it doesn’t take much to land moments like when prom king contender Tommy Ross chases her through the halls to surprise-ask her to prom. “Stop trying to trick me,” she pleads. It’s heartbreaking. That’s because Peirce’s Carrie never loses sight of its real-world situation. This is a story about trickle-down power. Carrie’s mother (Julianne Moore) is a religious fundamentalist whose physical and emotional abuse of Carrie has made her submissive. She’s home-schooled Carrie for years until the state intervened for some unspecified reason, hence Carrie now shuffling her way through public school. The mean girl, Chris, leads the charge to bully the outcast, throwing tampons at Carrie in the opening as she gets her first period and doesn’t understand why she’s bleeding. In Peirce’s hands, the scene is traumatic but realistic. The girls’ behavior isn’t much larger than life, and Peirce makes sure to spotlight guilty Sue, Tommy’s girlfriend, who feels sorry for Carrie. Telekinesis or not, Carrie is one of the best high school movies in a year overflowing with them. What’s more, that domination/submission is learned behavior, as Peirce reveals in moments like Chris’ father yanking her arm in a meeting with the principal and in another scene when the otherwise sympathetic gym teacher (Judy Greer) slaps Carrie in hysteria. Something else Peirce gets is the way bullying has changed in the 21st century. Smartphones and social media allow the filming and broadcasting of humiliation, as in several major court cases lately and in the headline suicide of Tyler Clementi. What is Carrie if not a supernatural It Gets Better video? It’s the rare horror that’s on its way to a happy ending, courtesy of an honest, modest, coming-of-age fantasy. But then one last indignity unleashes hell, and the cycle of violence explodes

It all goes back to the great silent film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a creepy psychological thriller set around a carnival with a murdering hypnotist told in flashback from an asylum. The ‘30s had the classic monster movies (Dracula, Frankenstein, etc.), but The Black Cat is the real chiller. In the ‘40s came Val Lewton’s low-budget horrors such as Cat People, the spookiest being the lost-girl mystery The Seventh Victim. 1968 saw two topshelf thrillers, the zombie apocalypse Night of the Living Dead and the feminist psychodrama Rosemary’s Baby. In the ‘70s, Italy was known for giallo, stylish thrillers like bloody ballet-academy mystery Suspiria. Then a parade of deserved classics: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the unstoppable slasher Halloween, The psycho-masterpiece The Shining. Lesser known is the standout stalker movie Black Christmas.

Our hero, Flint Lockwood, voiced by Bill Hader, leaves his job when he finds out the machine responsible for the original is still in operation, leading to another avalanche of foods crossed with animals. PG (95 min.)

In this high-concept action flick, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger team up to escape from a dangerous, off-the-grid, maximum-security prison that puts all the prisoners in clear glass boxes on stilts. R (116 min.)
6. Prisoners
When the daughters of two neighboring families are kidnapped on Thanksgiving, the parents take matters into their own hands, even as the police investigate in this star-studded drama (Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal). R (153 min.)
7. Enough Said
Julia Louis-Dreyfus befriends a hippie poet (Catherine Keener) and her exhusband James Gandolfini at the same party. Her relationships with

SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK By Cheyenne Mueller Against medical advice - and without the knowledge of her husband – well-meaning mother Dolores Solatano discharges her adult son, Pat Solatano Jr., from a Maryland mental health institution after his minimum eight-month, court ordered stint. (After discovering his wife Nikki with the man she was having an affair with, Pat brutally attacked the man, resulting in Pat’s institutionalization.) Pat is forced to move back in with his parents in their Philadelphia home. It’s later revealed that he suffers from bipolar disorder. After the attack, Nikki left Pat and placed a restraining order against him. Though supposed to take medication and required to attend mandatory therapy sessions, Pat believes he can return back to his old life by attempting to find the “silver linings” in his life. He strives to get his old job back as a substitute teacher and to reunite with Nikki. The film touches on the real issue of mental illness, shattering stigmas behind stereotypes. Pat faces bipolar disorder, but director David Russell forces the viewer to recognize that mental illness is more common than people are willing to admit. Silver Linings reminds us that mental illness works in many directions; when Pat discovers some triggers for his disorder. Both he and the audience witness people in his life who also have problems of their own; such as his Philadelphia Eagles obsessed father, his best friend Ronnie who quietly seethes over the control wielded by his wife Veronica, and Veronica’s widowed sister, Tiffany Maxwell, a recovering sex addict. After an awkward first meeting, Pat and Tiffany form an unlikely pair. She offers to help Pat reconnect with his wife, but only if he’ll do something very important for her in return. As their deal plays out, an unexpected bond begins to form between them. MSC Aggie Cinema will be showing a screening of Silver Linings Playbook as a part of their Arthouse Series on Friday, October 25, 2013.
