With their latest release, Rivers In The Wasteland, NTB strongly follows up their most recent album, The Reckoning. NTB has been very vocal about the desire to return to a more organic, acoustic-driven sound with their newest album. The 11 tracks take NTB fans back to the beginning -- Back to the roots of where their music started. Newcomers to NTB won’t find the standard fare blast of stadium rock that has been interwoven into their most recent releases. This album starts on a contemplative note with “Wasteland” and builds from there. Co-produced by the band, this album should please new and old fans alike.

Martina McBride
“Everlasting”
Release Date: Apr. 8, 2014
Reviewed by Haley Clark
Martina McBride is legendary in country music for her powerhouse vocals. Now she’s using those vocals to cover songs made famous by some of music’s greats in other genres. In her second cover album, Everlasting, McBride covers a variety of pop, blues, and soul classics that she fuses with her country sound. She covers the Elvis hit “Suspicious Minds”, the Aretha Franklin classic “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man”, and Van Morrison’s “Wild Night”. Collaborations are also thrown into the mix, with Gavin DeGraw lending his voice to “Bring It on Home to Me” and Kelly Clarkson’s vocals can be heard on “In the Basement”.
Paolo Nutini
“Caustic Love”
Release Date: Apr. 14, 2014 Reviewed by Haley Clark Scottish singer/songwriter Paolo Nutini had much success with his debut album, These Streets, which included hits “New Shoes” and “Last Request”. His second album Sunny Side Up, released in 2009, spawned four hit singles and is certified 5X platinum. Almost five years since his last release, Nutini is now releasing his third studio album, Caustic Love, following the success of his first two albums. The album’s debut single “Scream (Funk My Life Up)” was released in January and has already been a success with its bluesy, funk feel. Nutini continues on the blues track with “Let Me Down Easy”, switches gears with a little R&B flavor in “One Day”, and goes soulful with “Iron Sky”. The album features new material and a new sound from Nutini that parallels his unique taste for music.
Ingrid Michaelson
“Lights Out”
Release Date: Apr. 15, 2014 Reviewed by Kelly Porter The track “Girls Chase Boys” off of Lights Out has people talking. Michaelson says of the song, “More than just being about my experience, its focus shifted to include the idea that, no matter who or how we love, we are all the same. The video takes that idea one step further and attempts to turn stereotypical gender roles on their head. Girls don’t exclusively chase boys, we all know this. We all chase each other and in the end we are all chasing after the same thing: love.” The bold statement comes across in the lyrics and visually in the music video (“An homage to Robert Palmer’s ‘Simply Irresistible’”). Check out “Girls Chase Boys” and the rest of the tracks on Michaelson’s latest, Lights Out.

Puddle of Mudd at Harry’s Rewind the clock, the calendar, the fashion, and throw yourself back to the ‘90s and early 2000s, to a wilting age of grunge and metal. Go back to the radio (it’s a thing in your car) and reminisce about tunes that once filled the airwaves (like wifi, but cruder). If “Blurry” by Puddle of Mudd happens to come on, we bet you’d be able to sing along. Formed in 1991 in Kansas City, Missouri, Puddle of Mudd is an alternative rock/post-grunge group who released their first album, Stuck, in 1994 and a second album, Abrasive, in 1997. It wasn’t until 2001, though, that the group’s major-label debut album, Come Clean, was released. The album spawned the group’s most successful single “Blurry”-- the one we rock out to in the car still to this day. The group’s released five studio albums, one EP, and two compilation albums since it crawled out of the mudd. They’ve won four Billboard Music Awards and have toured with Linkin Park, Stone Temple Pilots, and Staind. Lead singer Wes Scantlin is the only founding member of the “band” who remains, and the group, in various lineups, has sold more than seven million albums to date. The current group consists of Wes Scantlin on guitar and lead vocals, Doug Ardito on bass, Christian Stone on guitar, Shannon Boone on drums, and Adam Latiff on guitar.

“Indie / Alt-Country” artist Shane Walker will be coming to Bryan for the night from Waco. The multi-talented musician is not only a songwriter but a beekeeper and a Spanish teacher, as well. He’ll be playing at Revolution Cafe and Bar on Friday, April 18 beginning at 8pm.
Shane Walker at Revolution Café and Bar By Kelly Porter
Walker dove head first into his music career in 2002 when he won the University Songwriter Competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival and founded an alternativecountry band called The Gougers. In the following years, Walker’s life consisted of a lot of music, touring, and living out every musician’s dream: he opened for prominent country stars such as Willie Nelson, Marty Stuart, and Roseanne Cash. After putting out three records with some success, The Gougers broke up and Walker poured himself into yet another group, this time a rock band called St. Cloud. St. Cloud consists of Walker, Brian Beken, and Nick Chambers. The band’s Facebook says that their music will attract “hillbilly hipsters and the NPR crowd alike.” Some of the St. Cloud songs that the group produced will be featured on Walker’s upcoming solo record, set for release in winter of 2014.

Green River Ordinance at The Tap
By Katy De Luna
Green River Ordinance started out in 2003 opening gigs for Flickerstick (the Denton band that won VH1’s show Bands on the Run), and by 2005 they had shared the stage with Collective Soul, Eisley and Mutemath. In 2009 they had released their first major label album, Out of My Hands. After leaving their label in 2010, Green River Ordinance soon went on tour with the Goo Goo Dolls and Switchfoot and were able to get their songs featured on every episode of the MTV show “If You Really Knew Me.” Still lacking a label in 2011, Green River Ordinance raised $40,000 through Kickstarter to produce a new album. A little over a year later, the band released their newest album, Under Fire, and went on a national tour with the help of their fans. Their ‘90s pop-rock sound has been compared to artists such as Third Eye Blind, Sister Hazel and Matchbox 20; but music is not the only passion the band has. They are great supporters for charities, and in 2010 they created their own charity website, theHopeGROs. com. The website allows people to purchase their songs with 100 percent of the proceeds going to a charity. Each band member has chosen a charity, and people buying the songs are allowed to pick which charity their money goes to. The organizations the band supports includes Charity Water, Autism Speaks, Freedom is not Free (benefits wounded service members), International Justice Mission (provides rescue and relief to victims of slavery) and Nuru International (which helps eradicate extreme poverty). You’ll be able to catch Green River Ordinance at The Tap April 24 at 9pm. Special guests Jillian Edward and Tim Halperin will open.

Black Pistol Fire at Grand Stafford Theater It all started in a kindergarten class in Canada where Kevin McKeown and Eric Owen met and fostered a life-long friendship. The two-man band (who sound more like a 10 man band) moved down to Austin in 2009 and brought with them a classic rock, garage punk sound packaged as Black Pistol Fire. The two-piece has been compared to Kings of Leon, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Black Keys, and Clutch, and they’re known for extremely energetic, loud performances—which is amazing, considering it’s only one guy on guitar and another on drums. Before moving to Austin, the duo was a rock trio called The Shenanigans, based in Toronto. The Shenanigans released an LP called Bombshell Baby, and soon the band and Toronto got too stale for McKeown and Owen. Recently, the duo has opened tours with Weezer and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and signed with William Morris – the world’s largest entertainment agency. Black Pistol Fire released their newest southern rock LP earlier this month called Hush or Howl. Hush or Howl is an 11-track sizzler that closely resembles The Black Keys if they had played in a garage in Detroit 40 years ago. To celebrate the release, Black Pistol Fire are making their way from Austin to perform a BCS record release show. You’ll be able to see Black Pistol Fire at Grand Stafford Theater on April 24. The doors open at 8pm with opening acts The Docs and Dames. Tickets are $10.

Jacob Powell
Hailing from a small town in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, Jacob Powell is coming to College Station’s MSC Town Hall to perform the Lunchbox Concert Series. Initially a pre-med student with big dreams of having a medical career, Powell gave up the textbooks for another dream. He knew he had a gift for music and believed sharing it was the best thing to do. In 2013, Jacob was lucky enough to sign a record deal with Sony/ATV, make an EP, and embark on his “Put It in a Koozie Tour.” His passion for music impressed Nashville’s best music producers, and 2013 proved to be a successful and exciting year for the up-and-coming artist. Alongside his journey, he’s had support from other artists on tour with him, such as Chris Cagle, Don Williams, Travis Tritt, and many more. “To see a song go from sitting in a room with an idea to playing it out and people singing along, that’s the coolest part about it,” Powell says.

Hit the Road to MenilFest
This year marks the 6th year for MenilFest, a unique festival that combines different types of art (such as visual, literary, and performing art) all rolled into one grand exhibition on the Menil campus. The Menil’s impressive collection spans the museum’s interior and spills out the museum doors and onto the institution’s 30 acres. The diverse Menil collection includes exhibits from Antiquities, Modern and Contemporary art, and much more. During the festival, the art on exhibit will more than triple. Lines of tables from nationally recognized vendors to small, local vendors will wrap around the outside of the museum. Patrons are free to peruse tables, meet the artists, and browse literary works writers have brought with them. You can also purchase magazines and books from authors on hand. Readings by literary artists and other performers will take place hourly, and art will constantly be in attendance all around you – whether it’s visual (in the form of films, sculptures) or auditory (music or poetry). MenilFest is the result of different community arts organizations coming together to promote art and culture in Houston, featuring local artists and nationally recognized artists, too. It will take place on Saturday, May 3 from 11am – 6pm. It’s free to attend, visitors are welcome to bring their pets, and there will also be food trucks on site. Art/Words/Noise: From visual art, spoken word, musical performances, films, artists, to wordsmiths – all types of art will be displayed at the festival. As mentioned, you’ll be able to view the Menil Collection but you will also be able to see the Rothko Chapel, “a tranquil meditative environment inspired by the mural canvases of Russian born American painter Mark Rothko”, which hosts over 60,000 visitors a year. There will also be different panels hosted on everything from food writing to how to get your first book published. Indie Book Festival: “The Annual Houston Indie Book Fest celebrates Small Presses, Magazines, and Independent Bookstores in Houston”, according to the festival’s Facebook page. With almost 100 independent authors, bookstores, magazines, presses, and literary arts organizations, the Indie Book Festival offers visitors a chance to rub shoulders with luminaries of the literary world. The festival is unique in that it is the only event of its kind in the region.

The best selling book unveils all the secrets to becoming a fashion queen and finding your own personal style. OVERDRESSED
by elizabeth l. cline Overdressed is a quick, easy, and informative book that will have you rethinking fashion and the way you buy clothes. Only a few decades ago, most people had maybe a handful of clothes in their closets. These days, average shoppers buy at least 60 new pieces of clothing a year. Elizabeth Cline’s book is a perplexing reflection held up to the current mainstream’s shopping habits.
Through her research, she goes over the old standards of quality and how they have worn out the face of new discount attitudes and habits of overspending. According to Cline, not only have most clothes lost their quality of material, but the average consumer has also lost their eye for what quality really means.

The Grand Budapest Hotel
Mean Girls is on Netflix… That’s like So Fetch
Dramedy (R)
Every once in a while, there comes a movie that is not good… but great. Wes Anderson has done just that in The Grand Budapest Hotel, a film that is wholly entertaining while still maintaining his patented artistry. Anderson has successfully avoided standard tropes common at the box office (extravagant explosions and/or root-for-theunderdog feel-good movies), while, again, earning praise for his ingenuity. The Grand Budapest Hotel is his best feature yet, even better than 2009’s Fantastic Mr. Fox and 2012’s Moonrise Kingdom. And what a cast for this film. Anderson has a special affinity for a handful of actors and often casts them in his productions. Tilda Switon (who is nearly unrecognizable in the film), Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Bob Balaban, and Edward Norton are all “Anderson regulars” who make small appearances in his recent endeavor.
Mean Girls is ten years old. I repeat – MEAN GIRLS IS TEN YEARS OLD. Feel As with all of Anderson’s films, Grand Budapest is intricate as a story within a story within a story that reveals old, don’t ya? the adventures of Mr. Gustave H (Ralph Fiennes), a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel in Zubrowka, and Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori), the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The film’s first narrator is The millennial generation’s cult classic is finally on Netflix, which means a “seasoned” writer (Tom Wilkinson) who recounts a particular conversation he had in his younger years (played that you can relive your favorite moments of girl world 24/7. then by Jude Law) with Mr. Moustafa (F. It’s understandable, and all part of Anderson’s meticulous filmmaking and story weaving. thinks she knows about survival of the fittest. But the law of the jungle Moustafa’s account takes the audience back to the ‘30s, when Gustave was the pulse of the grand hotel and the takes on a whole new meaning when the home-schooled teen enters Budapest’s main attraction. Always smartly dressed in his royal purple uniform, not a hair was out of place. His “company” public high school for the first time, becoming popular with The Plastics was always requested amongst a very particular type of clientele: rich, white, blonde, old, and needy. When one of his (the A-list girl clique at her new school) until she makes the mistake of favorite patrons, Madame D (Tilda Swinton) is murdered, she leaves Gustave a priceless painting, causing the family to falling for Aaron Samuels, the ex-boyfriend of alpha Plastic Regina George, revolt, which serves as the catalyst for an extravagant escapade involving theft, murder, delicious cakes, an elaborate cuing psychological warfare. prison break, a humorously-murdered cat, and a series of helpful phone calls from fellow concierges. The screenplay for the movie was written by Tina Fey and inspired by The film is unbelievably charismatic and funny; but Anderson doesn’t deliver the quips outright. This is a movie Rosalind Wiseman’s best-selling parent-education book, Queen Bees and where the laughter doesn’t come expectantly but is based off the viewer’s ability to understand layered wit. Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and The Grand Budapest Hotel is 100 minutes long and rated R for language, some sexual content, and violence (but Other Realities of Adolescence, which was published in 2002 and contains no narrative at all. The original screenplay was much more explicit than absolutely nothing is overdone). the PG-13 film that was released; according to interviews with the cast, Regina’s character cursed like a sailor and several lines had to be edited because of their graphic nature (hint: “made out with a hot dog” was not in the original script). Quotes from the decade-old movie can still be heard regularly, despite being released to theaters on April 30, 2004 when most of the collegeage students were in primary school. “You go, Glenn Coco!” is a favorite, being used to both legitimately congratulate someone and also serving as a smartass remark on occasion. Thanks, Tina Fey. The successful franchise even spurred a straight-to-DVD sequel Mean Girls 2 in 2011, but we try not to talk about that. We just… nope. No. Sorry to even bring that up.

Humans spend a lot of time hoping for and worrying about our luck. Whether we’re depending on luck to pass a test, to help us embark on a successful business endeavor, or even win to the lottery, we place our lives in the hands of fate far more often than we realize. But even though we all place ourselves at the mercy of luck from time to time, the outcome of greatly affects the way we are viewed by others for taking risks. We all have that one “screw-up” friend. You know the one – they pass up pretty much any opportunities they have. They leave success up to fate, and fate…well, fate usually let’s them down completely. They never study for tests and almost always end up failing; they slack off at work and end up getting in serious trouble or fired. Now think about another type of friend we all have: the Lucky One. They’re the one we were jealous of in school because they rarely came to class, barely studied, and still managed to pull of a B (if not better) average. They applied to some jobs but weren’t really trying that hard, when all of a sudden something “came through” from a random acquaintance and they landed a cushy job with a great salary. While most of us are a mix of these two extremes, with things working out for us in some situations and going horribly in others, the way things play out almost always affects the way our actions (or lack thereof) are perceived. Dr. Heather Lench, a psychology professor at A&M, and her team (consisting of Rachel Smallman and Kathleen Darber of A&M and Darren Domsky of A&M Galveston), have been studying that very phenomenon. Their study, “Beliefs in Moral Luck: When and Why Blame Hinges on Luck”, takes an in-depth look at a philosophical concept known as moral luck – it “describes situations in which a person is subjected to moral judgments by others despite the fact that the assessment is based on factors beyond his or her control”. Their study presents test subjects with the following scenario: Two men are standing on a bridge, each holding a brick of a different color. One throws his and doesn’t hit anything, but the other throws his and hits a car, killing the driver. Most subjects say that the man who killed someone should be punished more severely, even though they both did the exact same thing; the other man just got lucky. In theory, subjects say people should be judged on intent; but when they’re presented with a real life situation and consequences, emotions often get in the way. A great example Lench gave was “When two people drive drunk, but one hits and kills a child, he is punished more severely than the man who didn’t hurt anyone, although they committed the same offense of drunk driving – it’s just that one got lucky.”
