Canadian singer/songwriter Kiesza released her second studio album, Sound of a Woman on October 21. Kiesza was born and raised in Calgary and attended The Young Canadians School of Performing Arts where she performed tap and jazz dancing and theatre. She also trained as a ballerina, but an injury at the age of 15 ended her career potential. When her parents divorced when she was 18, she was inspired to write her first song.

Mysterious and downright desperate, Halsey’s Room 93 grabs your hand and leads you down a deep, dark cavern haunted by her past. Her lyrics evoke treachery and she urges listeners to succumb to the pitfalls of young love with her. Self-proclaiming herself to be the “New Americana,” the name of a song released this past March, Room 93 is an earful of disparate sounds—whistling, synthesized percussion, group chanting – hallmarks of the direction contemporary pop is taking, and maybe even more progressive.

Her sophomore album had several successful singles. The dance pop hit and first single off the album, “Hideaway,” debuted at #1 on the UK singles chart and propelled her to stardom. “Giant in My Heart,” the second single off the album, climbed the charts to #4. Aside from writing her own songs, she has also written songs for Rihanna, Kylie Monogue, and Icona Pop.

The track “Trouble – Stripped” brings in piano, ushering in a somber, classical feel that contradicts the subject matter of the song: seduction and substance abuse. Halsey’s honesty and transparency is divulged from an impressive vocabulary, where her wordplay and delivery fuse magically.

London was quoted saying that his friend and producer Kanye West “will drive you crazy.” Frustrated with Yeezy’s tendency to scratch progress and start from square one, London had to lean on Kanye’s killer money-making instinct and trust that his fellow rapper knew what he was doing. London cites Michael Jackson and Prince as inspiration, but Vibes steady flow and free styling are nothing like the king and prince. The album features Kanye in “Can’t Stop” and Leon Ware on both “Water Me” and “Need Somebody.” Each artist adds their own personal flare to the album, but not without a little complication. Overall, Vibes is a solid album fans of Frank Ocean, Childish Gambino, and Kendrick Lamar will eat up.

Get on Up: The James Brown Story @ MSC

By Kate Williams

Released this past August in theaters nationwide is the story of a young musician from very humble beginnings who grows up to be one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century: James Brown. The film stars Chadwick Boseman as the Godfather of Soul, Viola Davis as Susie Brown, and Octavia Spencer as Aunt Honey. Enjoy a slice of American history set in the early ‘60s and witness the hardships Brown endured climbing the slippery rungs of America’s music ladder. Battling abuse, spending some time in the can, and struggling to make ends meet, this film shows the nitty-gritty side of show business and how Brown navigated its pitfalls, sometimes succumbing to them. The film will be screened for free at the MSC November 14 for free. 7-9pm.

By Eunice De Luna Cody Johnson and the Rockin’ CJB are performing at Harry’s, November 14. Johnson is known for his radio singles “Nobody to Blame,” “Pray for Rain” and “Texas Kind of Way” that jumpstarted his career as a country singer. Born in Sebastopol, a small East Texas town, Johnson grew up surrounded by family. He was homeschooled until the ninth grade and during his time at home, his father taught him how to play the piano. Once in school Johnson’s teacher overhead him playing his music and encouraged him to form a band with his fellow Future Farmers of America members. The band competed at a Texas State FFA talent contest and placed runner up. In 2006, Johnson formed The Cody Johnson Band with his father Carl and drummer Nathan Reedy. The band recorded their first album Black and White Label and in 2007 lead guitar player, Matt Rogers joined the group. Together they recorded a live album, Live and Rocking at Shenanigans and Confetti’s Club in Huntsville, Texas. After the release of the album Johnson’s father quit the band. In 2009, Danny Salinas joined the band on bass guitar. That same year, their professionally produced debut album Six Strings One Dream was released. Three singles off the album reached top 10 on the Texas music charts. His next album, A Different Day, was released in 2011, that year he won the 2011 Texas Regional Music Award for New Male Vocalist of the Year.

Blithe Spirit @ Rudder Forum By Eunice De Luna

The Department of Performance Studies will present their main stage production, Blithe Spirit by Noël Coward, at Rudder Forum on November 13,14,16 and 20-23. The comedy classic is about a man whose life gets turned upside down when his current wife and his ex-wife, who returns from beyond the grave, start fighting. The medium who is responsible for his ex-wife’s return tries to resolve the situation but only further complicates things “One of the reasons the show is so well known and loved is that it works; you don’t need to change it,” says director Aaron Glover. “The version that Noël Coward wrote in 1941 is basically the same version that’s used today. The jokes are still funny; the situations are still appropriate. While the play definitely sounds like it was written in 1941, it doesn’t sound stilted or boring. It’s still a very entertaining evening.” The production entailed a number of challenges for the department, the cast, and crew. “The comedy of the script requires precision, and that’s something to work on,” says Glover. “And of course, the wordplay is very funny, but it has to appear effortless, and that’s a great challenge, too. Technically, the show has tons of props, lots of opportunities for interesting lighting and sound designs, and a set that has to feel like a living room but also allows for a lot of action, including some special effects.” Blithe Spirit tickets can be purchased online or at the MSC box office, student tickets are $5 and regular tickets are $10. The show starts at 7:30pm.

Scientists roll out robotic penguin chick to spy on shy Antarctic birds

Woman says health improved after eating dog food diet for six days

ADELIE LAND, Antarctica – Scientists in Antarctica have reported issues getting close enough to study the health habits of the notoriously shy emperor penguin.

NEW YORK – Anne Kadet is a Paleo dieter. In layman’s terms, she’s a person who eats food types presumed to have been eaten by early humans, consisting mainly of meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, and excluding dairy or grain products and processed food. Yet when she grew tired of the rising prices of meat and produce that comes along with that lifestyle, she didn’t have to look far to find a cheaper way of living … just in her pet’s dog bowl.

Their solution? A baby penguin chick on wheels.

After 66 years without a sighting, elusive fanged deer spotted once more

“I couldn’t help notice that my dog’s high-end kibble – like my Paleo diet – is high in protein, grain-free, and gluten-free,” she writes at Ozy.com

NURISTAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan – The Kashmir musk deer, a species lovingly dubbed the vampire deer by some fans, has seemingly popped up from the dead just like Dracula.

Kadet claimed she lost two pounds and her blood sugar dropped to the ultralow end of the ideal range, which was even better than she was eating on her previous diet.

But it’s no cause to worry: Only the male musk deer have fangs, and they’re not used to suck your blood. The Washington Post reports that the deer use their tusks during breeding season to battle for mates. Not to mention they only reach about two feet tall.

During her six days on the dog food diet, Kadet ate kibble and wet food, plus Milk-Bones for snacks, which she says she still prefers over K r a f t dinner or ramen noodles.

Ancient Ancestry

a

By Ka

Although this species of deer hasn’t been seen since 1948, scientists in northeastern Afghanistan reported sightings, according to Wildlife Conservation Society news release published Friday. A WCS survey team said they were unable to capture the little deer on camera because they were “difficult to spot.” The Kashmir musk deer is just one of seven similar species located throughout Asia. They are endangered due to loss of habitat and poaching for their prized scent glands.

Our innate curiosity to find out where we came from and where we’ve been is unique to our species.. Through DNA research, scientists have made great strides in tracing our lineage, but do some of our ancient ancestors go back further than we thought? According to a recent study by a multi-institutional team led by the Centre for GeoGenetics at the University of Copenhagen, the answer is yes. The research team sequenced a 36,000-year-old genome from DNA of one of the earliest known Europeans. The Kostenki 14 genome, so named because of its discovery at Kostenki in western

Russia, has provided insights into the movement of modern humans out of Africa and their divergence into distinctive populations. According to Ted Goebel, an anthropologist and Associate Director of the Center for the Study of First Americans at A&M, the findings of the study are important in three major ways. “First, we now know unequivocally that the major ancestral population of today’s Europeans was in place by 36,000 years ago”. Second, it shows us that “the split between European and East Asian populations occurred at this time”. And third, it provides more evidence

International scientists and filmmakers, led by Yvon Le Maho of the University of Strasbourg in France, crafted a remotecontrolled rover disguised as a chick to buddy up with the bashful birds in Adelie Land, Antarctica (the same place where the documentary March of the Penguins was filmed). And it’s been a flying success, according to the scientists. The rover, complete with gray fur, black arms, and a painted face and beak, has been able to get close enough for the penguins for them to sing to it. Scientists suggest that the adult penguins were trying to find a mate for their chicks and were listening for a response, but they didn’t program the rover to make a sound. One researcher said they hope to include a song-playing function in the next rover.

that Early Europeans and Neanderthals did interbreed with one another. Not only that, but according to their new findings, this all occurred 60,000 years ago, 10,000 years earlier than prior information indicated. The new findings not only better calibrate the timeline of development of early human groups, they could also provide insights into the descendant groups of these populations. For instance, the ancestors of early Native Americans share major components of their DNA with these early people. Each new genome studied is another piece of the origin story for humankind.

The legendary singer, songwriter, author, poet, activist, and actor will be performing November 17 at Rudder Auditorium at 7:30pm. Writing his first song and joining his first band at ten, Nelson has been a friend of music for as long as he can remember. He's been an actor in over 30 films and co-authored several books, including his own autobiography, Willie. His book Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die found its way on the Top 10 on the New York Time’s best-seller list. Both books are personal narratives that recount his colorful memories, observations, anecdotes and even lyrics throughout his long career. continued on page 11

continued from page 10

At 81 years old, Nelson is best known for his albums Shotgun Willie (1973), Red Headed Stranger (1975) and Stardust (1978)—an album that remained on the country album chart for 540 weeks straight. He began his career in Vancouver, Washington where he wrote “Family Bible” in 1956. Eventually he moved to Houston where he signed with D Records. Nelson served as one of the main contributors to outlaw country, a subgenre of country music that developed in the late 1960s. Then he was off to Nashville in 1960 and joined the Grand Ole Opry in '65. He retired in Austin in '72 for a short time, but it wasn't long before he was on the road again. He re-signed with Atlantic Records and began recording Shotgun Willie. Nelson was raised by his grandparents, Alfred and Nancy Nelson, who both studied music courses by mail from the Chicago Music institute. Nelson was a jack-of-all-trades, working as a cotton picker, saddle maker, disc jockey, and a salesman of Bibles, vacuum cleaners, and encyclopedias before he became famous. Another fun fact is that Nelson has played with his guitar “Trigger” for forty-three years. Trigger has been through thick and thin, withstanding countless concerts—it doesn’t look like much anymore, but it still plays like a dream in Nelson's hands. Willie was quoted saying, “Trigger is like me, old and beat-up.”

The Nutcracker @ Rudder Auditorium By Eunice De Luna

Christmas is coming early! Ballet Brazos presents The Nutcracker at Rudder Auditorium, Friday, November 14 at 7pm. The third annual performance features guest professional ballet dancers Eric Glenn, Jamie Lynn Witts, and Frank Shott. The Christmas classic that everyone loves is the story of Clara and her beloved toy, the Nutcracker. The classic is adapted from E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet, and was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with music composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikosvky. It opened to an unsuccessful premiere at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1892. Since then it has transformed to a timeless classic, performed by countless ballet companies. The story is set at the Stahlbaum house where it’s Christmas Eve and a Christmas party is happening. Dr. Drosselmeyer, a toymaker, brings gifts to all the children and a special gift to Clara. She opens it to find a beautiful nutcracker. Her brother is jealous of her special gift and grabs the doll and breaks it. Dr. Drosselmeyer quickly fixes it for Clara and lays it under the Christmas tree. As the party winds down Clara is worried about her doll and goes to the Christmas tree and falls asleep with the nutcracker in her arms. The clock strikes midnight and strange things start to happen. Everything around Clara starts getting larger and all the toys around her are coming to life. All the while the room is being filled by an army of mice, led by the Mouse King. The Nutcracker awakens and leads his army of toy soldiers into battle with the mice. The Nutcracker and his army are no match for the Mouse King. Clara makes a final move by throwing her slipper at the Mouse King hitting him straight on the head. The Mouse King

drops to the floor and the mice run away, carrying off their leader. The Nutcracker turns into a Prince and takes Clara to the Land of Sweets where they are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy. The Prince tells the tale of Clara and her courage and the Sugar Plum Fairy rewards them with a celebration of dances. As the finale, the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Cavalier dance a beautiful Pas De Deux. Clara awakens from her dream and finds herself under the Christmas tree holding her beloved nutcracker. The annual production features performers from across the Brazos Valley that were selected during an open audition in August. Since then the performers have been practicing and rehearsing to perfect the choreography. The production is under the direction of Suzzane Moreau and Diana Wilcox and guided by Ballet Mistress Kelly Ellison. Tickets for The Nutcracker range from $5-$25 and can be purchased online or at the MSC box office.

Healing Faith Benefit Dinner @ Brazos Center

By Kate Williams

A dinner and auction benefit for Healing Faith, a non-profit medical mission organization, will be held at the Brazos Center on the evening of November 18, 2014. The event, founded by local College Stationites Jason and Kari Segner, “started when the Segners felt God calling them to the mission field,” coordinator Michelle Skow said. “Jason was a skilled paramedic, and Kari had a heart for Africa ever since serving there in short term missions in high school. Through a short-term missions trip, God confirmed their convictions, and they started a medical based ministry called Healing Faith.” The event serves as the main substantial fundraiser for ongoing Healing Faith projects, including malaria education, prevention and treatment, and remote village medical outreach in Jinja, Uganda. “Our goal is to get people personally invested in the work of the ministry and become monthly supporters,” said Skow. “Our American dollars can do so much in Uganda. It costs less then $3 to diagnose and treat someone suffering from the life-threatening disease of malaria.” Individual tickets for the event are $35.00. In addition to the dinner, there will be a silent auction with all proceeds going towards the mission. “There will also be a free kids banquet that night, in conjunction with the adult benefit,” said Skow. “The kids will eat Chick-fil-A, play on bounce houses, and learn how they can make a difference with Healing Faith, too. Ultimately, we see the night as an invitation to the people of our community to get involved in the life-changing work God is doing in Uganda.” You can learn more about Healing Faith on their website: healingfaithuganda.com. The goal of the project is to raise $150,000.

Aggies Bowl-Eligible for Sixth Straight Season By Joshua Russell

Football What a win against the Tigers last week. The Aggies are bowl-eligible, and though that may not be a big deal to some, and going to a bowl is what is expected out of this program, this is the first time Texas A&M has gone bowl-ing for sixth consecutive years.

needed. The Aggies still have a lot of young guys in the system and any chance they can get to put on pads and learn is going to be valuable for the future of the team. Early bowl projections favor the Aggies making a trip to Houston to play in the AdvoCare Texas Bowl. Other scenarios include the Outback Bowl, Music City Bowl, Liberty Bowl and Birmingham Bowl.

Guerrieri, who was named the SEC Coach of the Year. A&M was named a #1 seed for the NCAA trounament for the first time in program history. They will play Houston Baptist in the first round. As long as they win they could host up to the first four rounds of the tournament at Ellis Field in front of the 12th Man. The first round begins this weekend.

Soccer The SEC Champion Aggies have had a remarkable season so far, finishing up the regular season on a tear, going 6-1-1 en route to a back-to-back conference crown. With success comes awards, and the Aggies earned plenty of them. Texas A&M placed four players on the All-SEC First Team, including Shea Groom, who was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Year. Groom led the SEC with six game winning-goals, placed 2nd in goals at 13, and third in points with 29. Groom was joined by forwards Bianca Brinson and Annie Kunz and defender Meghan Streight. Brinson led the conference with six assists in conference play. Kunz earned her second nod on the First Team and had five goals and five assists. Streight finished on the All-SEC First Team for the third-consecutive time.

Though the bowl game won’t be as prestigious as the last two bowl games, when A&M went to the Cotton Bowl and Chick-fil-A Bowl, a trip to a bowl game will allow for much needed practice time. If the Aggies don’t go to a bowl game, then the season is over and practices are done. By going to a bowl game, it allows for a month of practice, and judging by the team’s performance the past month, a few more practices are

Midfielder Kelley Monogue and defender Janae Cousineau were named to the All-SEC Second Team and defender McKayla Paulson was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team. Monogue finished second in the SEC in points (30) and third in goals (11). Cousineau has six goals in SEC action this year. Paulson was the only freshman to start every match for A&M until she was injured last in the year. The Aggies were joined by head coach G
