Shawn Mendes Album: Handwritten Release Date: April 14, 2015 By Linley McCord
Brad RebaPaisley McEntire
He’s 16 years old, and he’s on track to hit the Billboard Top 200 with the No. 1 debut album. If that doesn’t make you wonder what you’re doing with your life, we don’t know what will. Shawn Mendes was once a star on the popular video app Vine and has since released a few singles that have made it big. You may recognize the song “Life of the Party,” which is the first track on the album. “Handwritten” encapsulates everything you love about One Direction (minus the frills or drama) with the soulful jams of Sam Smith. He already has a Teen Choice Award under his belt for Choice Web Star in the music category. This brand new album is half upbeat and half sweet songs. He obviously has a skill with music and lyrics and will produce many wonderful things in the future.

Reba McEntire launched “Love Somebody” on April 14 featuring her popular single “Going Out Like That” and much more. The album is a beautiful mix of fun and sorrow as she sings about the ups and downs of life. Reba’s deeply emotional lyrics allow listeners to truly feel her words. “She Got Drunk Last Night” offers a new perspective to the well-known Eli Young Band song “Drunk Last Night.” Reba’s version is a female’s viewpoint on the tragedy of a woman turning to alcohol to relieve her pain. The rest of her lyrics follow suit with powerful messages and melodies. Her sound is the same, but at 60, Reba has more passion in her voice than ever.
The Mountain Goats, American indie folk rock band, released their latest album, “Beat the Champ,” on April 7. Singer-songwriter John Darnielle first formed the band in the early 90s and was the sole member. Over the years, he has worked with a number of collaborators but remains the core member of The Mountain Goats. Since 2002, they’ve been recording studio albums with a full band. The Mountain Goats’ history and basis is obviously unique, and their music is equally unique. Darnielle, who plays guitar and keyboard, also sings. His poetic and highly intonated singing style is almost half spoken, half sung. This new album is on par with The Mountain Goats’ eclectic style, and fans should be pleased. “The Legend of Chavo Guerrero,” “Foreign Object,” and “Heel Turn 2” are some of the more popular tracks, but all are pretty impressive and as artsy as can be expected.

Eyes Wide Open
Fifteen-year-old Sabrina Carpenter is adding her name to the growing list of stars turned singers. An actress on the Disney Channel show “Girl Meets World,” Carpenter has experience in the entertainment industry, and now she’s spreading her wings and celebrating the release of her first album, “Eyes Wide Open.” Carpenter lacks a unique vocal signature that will set her apart from the pack. Despite her average voice, “Eyes Wide Open” is worth listening to. Tracks such as “We’ll Be The Stars” will quickly become a personal favorite if you prefer melodic, uplifting songs. “White Flag” delivers an inspiring message of perseverance, and “Best Thing I Got” is the tune to dance to. Carpenter also manages to create an entire album of ageappropriate songs. Imagine that.

By Abigail Stricker Austinite Kyle Park is bringing his Texas Country to Harry’s on Friday, April 24. Opening for acts such as the Eli Young Band, Mark Chestnutt, Jack Ingram, Randy Rogers Band, and Cody Johnson, Park and his band play over 175 shows per year. Park’s influences include Clint Black and Chris LeDoux. Starting with the album “Big Time” in 2005, Park has released four studio albums and two EPs. Park first began experimenting with music when he was 12 years old after his father passed away. He started rocking out on the guitar to hard rock and metal, but he soon discovered a real passion for country. He has come a long way and recalls his band’s early performance days: “All we had was a big cab, two guitar amps and the drums. We didn’t have any merchandise or microphones or cables or anything. If it rained, we had to pull over and wait. We had no coverage for our stuff, no insurance, no nothing.” Park’s most recently released album, “Beggin’ for More,” came out early 2013. His country crooning is impressive – as is his unique and intricate songwriting. What is perhaps most impressive about Park is that he is a one-man show of sorts. He writes, produces, and performs his own songs. And he’s worked hard on his music career for 10 years now. But he’s grateful and humbled for the experience and by the hard work. “Nothing comes easy,” Park said. “If it did, I’d be scared of it. There’s something to be said for experience. I know that music isn’t quite like an industrial business, but there’s one way they’re similar. A lot of times the person with the most experience comes out ahead and does a better job.” Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at Harry’s, at Cavender’s, Southern Jewlz Boutique and Aggieland Outfitters for the April 24 show. Doors open at 9pm.

On Friday the 24, the Street Rodders invite you to a pool party at the Manor House Inn for food, drinks, and socializing, but the real party starts Saturday at the Brazos Center. Featuring hot rods, muscle cars, and classics, this show has something for everyone to appreciate. Love Chevrolets? Maybe you’ll see a Bel Air, a Camaro, or an Impala. Prefer Fords? Keep an eye out for a Mustang or a vintage truck. But with such a sublime collection of horsepower in one place, it won’t matter what make and model you favor because you’ll be wide-eyed with wonder. Spend time conversing with fellow car lovers about restorations, paint jobs, and the process of it all. Inquire about maintenance tips and tricks, the best place to buy parts, and which mechanics to trust. Take pictures of the cars you wish you could have but can’t actually afford. And even if you don’t have the slightest inkling about what goes on underneath the hood of a car, you’ll still be able to appreciate the inherent, majestic aesthetic that is classic cars. A portion of the proceeds for this event will benefit two local charities: the Still Creek Ranch, a home for children who are abused, rejected, or abandoned, and the Hospice Brazos Valley, a nonprofit organization committed to helping those with physical and emotional needs. The entry fee is $25, which includes a t-shirt. To learn more, visit the Bluebonnet Street Rodders website. You won’t want to pass it by.

BYX Island Party By Linley McCord The annual Island Party music festival is back for its 21st year! Brothers Under Christ, or BYX, hosts this event each year to raise money for their philanthropy and provide an afternoon of music, food, and relaxation. This year’s event will be on Friday, April 24 from 6:30 to10:30pm and the Wolf Pen Amphitheater and it is totally free! Three artists will be performing this year on the stage of the moat-encircled theatre, and you won’t want to miss any of them. Solo artist Corey Kilgannon, a Christian singer-songwriter out of Nashville, will open the festival. His sweet, soulful voice will leave you wanting to hear more. The second act of the evening is Little Chief, an indie band native to Fayetteville, Arkansas. Little Chief brings in banjos, drums, and a bounce to their music that is undeniable. The headliner of the night is Judah and the Lion. Another Nashville group, they combine country and folk for a mixture that will without doubt bring you to your feet. The band will put on a performance, not just play music. Their lively personalities will definitely light up the spring night. Bring soccer balls, Frisbees, blankets, and friends for this outdoor party. Families and students alike are welcome to join in the festivities. There will be various food trucks in case you get hungry (be sure to bring a little cash for that!). BYX will be selling t-shirts, because who doesn’t want a commemorative shirt to remind you of the memories? There will also be raffle tickets for sale to win great prizes. For their philanthropy, BYX is donating all proceeds to The Bridge Ministries in Bryan. Any raffle ticket that you purchase could be a win-win situation for you: win a prize and donate to a ministry in Bryan that provides food and other necessities for B-CS residents. Parking is limited in the lot associated with the park, even with the recent expansion, but there is plenty of parking at Post Oak Mall, as well as along the side streets around Wolf Pen. It’s a free come-and-go event with a welcoming atmosphere and a great evening escape from the chaos of the year.

Girl Still “Too Turnt” from Chilifest By Annabeth Reeb Miles of partying country fans in Snook left students covered in mud, booze, and who knows what else. Most importantly, the two-day festival left attendees feeling, well, too “turnt” (i.e., riled up, ready to party). Katie Jane complained, while pointing to the museum of wristbands on her arm, that she didn’t know how she was ever going to calm back down.
@maroonweekly
Instagram @maroonweekly
Instagram is still flooded with blurry pictures of too-drunk comrades smiling at the wrong camera captioned “RIP Chilifest.” Facebook posts are stuck on pleas for help – from “lost shoes,” to “can’t find my dignity.” The city is caught in post-Chilifest turmoil and cops are staggering to try to get muddy boots back inside as they line the streets from Texas Avenue to Wellborn Road. The largest causality remains the little town of Snook, which is suffering a huge setback from the loss of too much dirt. The town is desperately asking students to bring it back, but that would of course require them to wash off their boots and mud stricken cars, which we all know won’t happen. It’s also a question whether the all-star lineup was in fact actually there, because none of the concertgoers can remember if they saw Aaron Watson or just a drunk guy with a guitar. It has been confirmed that some kind of advocate went running drunk through the concert site late Friday night, trashing a number of fraternity builds. His wreckage achieved exactly what he intended: the century-long feud is finally over. “He tore down a wooden board,” a fraternity member said. “We just can’t come back from that.” Whether you only made it to the parking lot before being forced into handcuffs, or you miraculously made it all the way to the end, it’s safe to say that you’ll be stuck with the Chilifest blues for at least a few more weeks. Katie Jane is saddened at the news that there is seemingly no cure for her unmanageable amount of “turnt,” but she has high hopes she’ll be back to normal in a few more months.

Defeat Allergies the Natural Way By Adrianna Zampieri
It’s that time of year again – the season for sneezin’. Allergies can test even the most patient person. Caused by an exaggerated reaction of the immune system to foreign substances, or allergy-producing substances called “allergens,” allergies can lead to a stuffy nose, watery eyes, and coughing and sneezing. With spring in the air, the warm weather is driving levels of airborne allergens through the roof. Thankfully there are many tips and tricks to help you through this grueling battle with pollen. For those who don’t like taking over-the-counter or prescription medication, many natural remedies exist that can be used to combat pesky symptoms. Holding a steaming mug of tea underneath your nose will help open your nasal passages. Drinking the tea also offers benefits. Peppermint tea acts as a decongestant, working to eliminate the buildup in your respiratory tract. Green tea with honey added aids in fighting basic symptoms, and drinking a cup of chamomile tea a day helps keep the allergies away. Using natural oils is another way to prevent and soothe allergies. Adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a small bowl of steaming water and inhaling the steam will help you breathe easier, but do not apply it directly to your skin. Lavender works as a natural antihistamine; it blocks the compound in your immune system involved in the
pg 16 • MAROON WEEKLY • April 22, 2015 • maroonweekly.com
inflammatory response. Apply a drop to your forehead, cheeks, and sinuses to help soothe symptoms, and the pleasant fragrance is a wonderful bonus. The most powerful natural oil trick to defeat allergies is combining lemon, lavender, and peppermint. The three work together to reduce inflammation and other discomforts. Mix the oils in equal ratio and rub it over your feet, chest, and forehead, or add a few drops of each to a tablespoon of honey for blessed, instant relief. Unfortunately, avoiding the outdoors during allergy season is not an option. Even if you were to hibernate for the next few months, pollen and other airborne allergens have a way of finding themselves in our homes. Spring-cleaning is a necessary evil. Be sure to replace filters on air conditioning units, vacuum your couches, clean your carpet, and dust everything – especially if you have pets. Keeping a clean home is a sure way to reduce the severity of symptoms. Allergy season can be a struggle for anyone, but don’t let the season for sneezin’ get you down. Taking care of yourself is the most important thing you can do, whether you’re using natural remedies to heal your body or cleaning your house from top to bottom as a preventative measure. Implement these simple solutions to help win the fight.
Born and raised in Amarillo, Kevin Fowler is no stranger to Texas country rock. While his music career started at the piano and listening to the music his dad enjoyed, the Guitar Institute of Technology in L.A. held the promise of a musical future. That is where Fowler picked up his guitar skills and passion for songwriting. Not originally a country artist, Fowler found himself in Austin playing the rock music scene. However, he quickly reached back to his roots of country music and earned himself a weekly gig in a bar on Sixth Street. In 2000, he released his first self-produced album, “Beer, Bait & Ammo,” which sold over 30,000 copies in Texas and got plenty of radio time.
Kevin Fowler @ Boulevard 217 By Linley McCord
Over the last 15 years, Fowler has been prolific with his musical talents and has worked with many other popular country artists, such as Mark Chesnutt and Colt Ford. His most recent album, “How Country Are Ya?” hit No. 9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country chart in 2014 and has earned him national acclaim. This was particularly notable because it was a self-produced album under his own record label. If these albums aren’t exactly ringing a bell, you may recognize Fowler from various commercials that he has done with the Texas Department of Transportation or Rodeo Austin. But he’s taking a break from television time and creating more records to come out to College Station for a show on April 24 at Boulevard 217. Doors will open at 8pm and tickets are $12 for general admission. So come early, grab a drink, and enjoy this country classic on a Texas Saturday night.

Game of Thrones SPOILER ALERT!! By Annabeth Reeb The fifth season of HBO’s acclaimed show hit the TV screen on April 12, and did not disappoint audiences. Seeing favorite characters back on our screens brings a surge of joy mixed with fear as we anxiously wait to see who will make it out of the season alive. Season five opened with a very foundational episode. Viewers got a glimpse of Kings Landing, the Wall, Sansa Stark and Petyr Baelish, Pod and Brienne, and Daenarys – along with two of her three dragons. In every plotline, there are serious predicaments that need to be resolved, like Dany’s dragons no longer liking her and a royal bounty on Tyrion’s head. Most of these will be violent resolutions, if the show’s history is any indication. As always, the episode ended with just enough of a cliffhanger to leave you itching for the next Sunday airtime. RIP Mance Rayder. Episode two began with Arya Stark – who we didn’t get to see in the first episode –finding the House of Black and White in hopes of exchanging her “Valar morghulis” coin for a new future. She’s been holding onto that piece of silver since season two, and it was high time for an exchange. Brienne and Sansa also cross paths, but that is a disappointing encounter that ends with Sansa choosing to stick with Little Finger, and Brienne vowing to never give up – which is unsurprising. We also get a glimpse of Dorne and the high tempers flaring there after the death of Oberyn. Arguably the best part of the episode: Jon Snow becomes Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. Let’s hear it for the boys! Episode three holds the promise of checking in on Winterfell, which means seeing Ramsay Bolton and Theon Greyjoy. While some storylines are still pretty on par with the books, many of the other plots are rapidly diverting away. So if your watching-party consists of a mixture of show-watchers and book-readers, know that those loyal-tothe-text don’t really have the upper hand in terms of knowing what’s going on. George R. R. Martin, author of the books and producer of the show, promised that there would be some unexpected deaths this season. So hold onto your favorite characters loosely, but remember: all men must die.

Dardevil Netflix By Adrianna Zampieri
As one of the most popular sites for watching movies and television shows online, Netflix has made its mark on the world. Now, with the production of Netflix Originals, this company is on a roll, and “Daredevil” is its newest hit. The release of “Daredevil” can’t be anything but a strategic move. Based off of a Marvel comic, this show reels in the fans of the wildly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe, many of whom are eagerly anticipating the release of “Avengers: Age of Ultron” this May. What better way is there to keep them occupied than to give them another hero to root for? “Daredevil” tells the story of Matt Murdock, an attorney who lost his eyesight as a young boy in a tragic accident. Despite this disability, Murdock is anything but powerless in his quest for justice as he uses his other extraordinary senses to fight against crime in Hell’s Kitchen, New York. Unlike the Marvel films, “Daredevil” is darker, grittier; death, violence, and brutality are a common occurrence. This blood and gore appeals to a more mature audience, proving that Marvel is more than just a one-trick pony. And with actors such as Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, and Elden Henson, who wouldn’t want to watch them save the day?
