Music Reviews

Switchfoot

The popular ‘90s band, Switchfoot, released their twelfth album, The Edge of the Earth, September 9. For their latest record, the band incorporated new stylings while still keeping true to their grunge-y sound that seasoned fans know and love.

Album:

During the band’s early year, they gained prestige through the Christian music scene with songs such as “Meant to Live” and “Dare You to Move.” After releasing their now double-platinum album The Beautiful Letdown in 2003, Switchfoot made the decision to appeal to mainstream audiences.

In The Edge of the Earth, the band definitely took some risks by using new instruments, such as synthesizers, electronic sounds, and violins, really hamming up an alternative undertone. The album appeals to the younger generation as well as the loyal fans who have stuck around since the beginning. Available on iTunes.

Emerging from the beaches of Newquay, England, Howard’s a UK native and has been writing songs since he was eleven, having played guitar for just as long. His style has often been compared to Jack Johnson, but his voice is reminiscent of John Martyn. Howard released a new single on September 9 as a precursor to his album I Forget Where We Were. The highly anticipated album has been in the works for a few years and has some big shoes to fill. The new album will drop October 20. The released single shares a name with the album and has a slower, melancholy feel. It’s not anything to write home about, but heavily emphasize Howard’s talent at lyricism.

Album: Goddess Release Date: Sept. 9, 2014 By Kate Williams

Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson is back with her third album, JHUD, which takes a step in a different direction from her previous album I Remember Me. JHUD brings back the funky, jazz-inspired beats that were featured in her first album, Jennifer Hudson, without being overproduced.

Female R&B artist BANKS dropped her new album, Goddess, September 9.

The first song off her new album is “Dangerous”, a mix of pop-infused beats and a jazz undertone with lyrics like “I do it for the thrill / even if it kills”.Later on in the album, “Bring Back The Music” showcases her phenomenal range, reminding us why no one can belt notes like JHUD. Timbaland, R.Kelly, Iggy Azalea, and T.I. all lend their creative talents on tracks, providing edgier contrasts against her soulful voice.

Fans of Lana Del Rey will enjoy her heartbreak anthems and Ellie Golding lovers will appreciate the album’s experimental beats.

BANKS combines her seductive voice with innovative beats and sorrowful lyrics to fashion a haunting hiphop vibe on her 18-song deluxe album.

“Begging for Thread” is currently one of the featured tracks on iTunes “Free Single of the Week.” Available on iTunes.

Texas Reds Festival By Eunice De Luna The eighth annual Texas Reds Steak and Grape Festival is back in historic Downtown Bryan and will take place September 27 and 28. This year, instead of a single main stage for musical guests, there will be five different stages throughout Downtown Bryan. The list features more than fifty performances of some of the best local and regional talent. Shops and restaurants along Main and Bryan streets will be open to the public for patrons to explore. Texan artisans will also be on site selling oneof-a-kind creations. Over thirty vendors representing the Lone Star State will be at the festival’s wine tent assisting visitors. Not a fan of wine? No problem! This year the festival is introducing the Texas craft beers showcase for all the beer connoisseurs out there. Tickets for the beer and wine tasting packages each cost $25, which comes with 5 tasting tickets and a commemorative 2014 Texas Reds glass. In previous years, the festival has required an entry fee, but this year admission to the festival is free. PARKING: Free parking will be available at the Roy Kelly Garage in Downtown Bryan. However, the festival is expecting to attract thousands of visitors this weekend. So if you want to beat the traffic and the frustration of fighting for parking, there will also be free shuttles leaving from Blinn College and Messina Hof Vineyard to the festival.

Texas Reds - Music Lineup By Rebecca Ramirez

Texas Reds will have over 45 artists performing on both Saturday and Sunday. Instead of Red’s usual single stage, they’re bringing in five (and the Palace Theater stage) this year to support more entertainment, allowing for a larger variety of talent and a “music festival” atmosphere.

location. Each stage will offer different genres and musicians.

Music for the weekend will start as early as 10am and end late into the evening. The five stages are the Casa Rodriguez Stage, the Cook Off/North End Stage, the Village Stage, the William J. Bryan Stage, and the Papa Perez Stage, located in their respective business’

The North End Stage is not genre specific and will have a wide variety of artists performing, such as Katye Hamlin – a country artist – and Soul Track Mind, an indie band.

Ruthie Foster

From houses of worship to houses of blues, Ruthie Foster has always been a rafter-rattler. With a soul-filled voice honed in Texas churches, she can move audiences to tears or ecstasy — sometimes in a single song. Her last two albums, 2009’s The Truth According to Ruthie Foster and 2012’s Let It Burn, moved the Recording Academy to deliver Best Blues Album Grammy nominations; her latest, Promise of a Brand New Day could make her a contender once more. Foster will perform Sunday at 3:30pm on the William J. Bryan Stage.

MW: Did your career in music begin in the church? How has that experience shaped your sound as you’ve moved into secular music?
Foster: I like to think the beginning of my musical education began in church and continues today, and it has totally shaped my sound; but then again, all the music I’ve encountered has. You never really stop learning, right? MW: You’ve said in previous interviews that the majority of songs on your new album, Promise of a Brand New Day, are “songs with messages.” What are some of the messages you’re trying to convey?
Foster: If you believe in yourself and believe in love, then you can overcome any obstacle. I think that’s the main message of the album. MW: In some of your music, you emphasize social issues. What are the issues you feel most passionately about?
Foster: I work with a charity home in Austin that helps musicians that have paved the way for us out here today to find homes and helps with their living expenses. It's terribly sad some of the people that have traveled the world singing and playing, bringing joy to people, are left with nothing after they can’t work anymore. MW: Who are some of your favorite musicians in the Texas singer/songwriter scene?
Foster: I do love Patty Griffin and Lucinda Williams and Terri Hendrix. But really, Texas has too many amazing musicians to pick any one favorite.

regional indie bands such as the Daniel Gonzales Band and Leopold & His Fiction. For the smooth jazz and blues lovers, the William J. Bryan Stage will host artists Ruthie Foster and Blues II. Country artist Clayton Gardener and rockers Hazy Ray will be located at the Papa Perez Stage. Variety plays a key component in the Texas Reds music entertainment. There will be something for everyone to listen to. The full music lineup is available online and can be found at tr.blog.bryantx.gov/schedule-2.

Steak and Wine

By Eunice De Luna

Texas Red’s steak cook off brings the best cooks from all over the state of Texas to compete on Saturday, September 27. New to the cook off this year is a category for appetizers, which must also contain beef. The contest awards first through ninth place and the first three winners will be rewarded cash prizes. Last year’s first place winners, Xtreme Texas Cookers, won $1000. In addition to the food street vendors will be serving, Downtown Bryan’s brick and mortar restaurants will also be open for business. Café Capri, Taz Indian Cuisine, Casa Rodriguez, The Village Café, Madden’s Causal Gourmet, Brauhaus Bavarian Restaurant and more will be serving food over the weekend. A new feature of Texas Reds Festival will be the addition of over ten Texas craft breweries in tandem with Reds’ extensive wine selection. Over 30 wineries will be in attendance, all from the state of Texas. Throughout the festival there will be tastings, from rieslings to pinot noirs, and wine education classes will also be on site. Among the wineries, four of them are from BCS’ own backyard – including Messina Hof Winery from Bryan and Perrine Winery from College Station.

Texas Reds - Entertainment

Local and national artists will be showcasing their work at the event this year. Fiber work, jewelry, pottery, iron making, clothing, wine accessories, paintings, and woodwork will be available at various booths scattered around the festival grounds. Texas Reds will have activities for the whole family, including a Kids Zone, Sports Zone, and Grape Stomp. The Kids Zone will be an inflatable amusement park comprised of several bounce houses for all ages. A dual slide rock climber, bungee run, Elmo’s World bounce house for infants, and a trackless train are just a few of the rides offered at the festival. The Purple Turtle Art Studio and Creative

pg 8 • MAROON WEEKLY • Sept. 24, 2014 • maroonweekly.com

Capsule will also be providing arts and crafts projects. Wristbands are $15 and are good to use all weekend. The Sports Zone will allow patrons to watch the Fightin’ Texas Aggies play Arkansas on flat-screen TVs that will be located in a tent near the central stage. There will be plenty of food and beer available. The Grape Stomp completion is a favorite tradition at the festival. Participants compose a team and compete to see who can stomp out the most juice from grapes in a barrel. A final round of competitors will stomp to see which team is dubbed winner of the Grand Champion Stomp-Off.

Diver Makes Unlikely Friendship With Dancing Moray Eel

Daredevils Disguised as Priests Make a Giant Leap of Faith POLAND, Warsaw — Holy Toledo! What appeared to be a quartet of priests jumping from the top of Poland’s tallest building—the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw— actually turned out to be a group of parachuting daredevils in priest costumes.

FLORIDA — One Australian diver has stricken one of the most unlikely friendships many marine experts have ever seen: a moray eel.

A video that surfaced online by an extreme sport team, No Limit, shows just how the phony parachuting fathers were able to accomplish such a devilish feat. Garbed in priestly cassocks, the jumpers were able to smuggle in parachute gear beneath their robes. Once they reached the public observation deck, they crammed into the bathroom, donned their jumping gear, climbed over the safety railings — ensuring tourists on the deck that it was ok, they had parachutes — and made the jump. When they landed safely, they gathered up their gear and high-tailed it to their getaway van, living to preach their leap of faith another day.

Batman, Spider-Man Behind Bars in Alleged Times Square Brawl NEW YORK — It appears that Batman and Spider-Man now have a new arch nemesis. Well, at least their Times Square counterparts do. Two costumed characters in New York City’s bustling hub of lights were arrested last Saturday night along with a third man for allegedly starting a fight while they were hustling for tips from tourists, according to multiple reports. The New York Post reports that Spider-Man, or Abdel Elkahezai, and Batman, or Jose Escalona-Martinez, were dressed as the superheroes when a pair of hecklers reportedly gave the crime fighters trouble.

Australian diver Valerie Taylor has been diving in the same spot off the Florida coast for years. When she first spotted the eel in his coral cave, she said she enticed it out of hiding and the eel quickly felt safe in her presence and seemed to dance around her. A year later, she came back, and the eel darted out of its burrow to give her a hug and another quick, dance-like greeting. What’s remarkable about this friendship is that moray eels are not known to be friendly creatures; they have poor eyesight, but an excellent sense of smell, experts say. But Taylor, who comes and goes sometimes in gaps of three years, says the eel is always there to say “Hi.” “There is no doubt in my mind that that eel really likes me,” Taylor said in a video of one her dives.

Once behind bars, the men said the brawl began after the heckler, who was allegedly intoxicated and arrested with them, sexually assaulted Batman by grabbing him on the rear. Spidey senses tingling, Elkahezai reportedly sprayed the alleged attacker with silly string, which was said to set off the first punch.

Collagen Implants Like You’ve Never Seen Before With cosmetic surgery and botox growing in popularity, it’s no doubt you’ve probably heard the word collagen before (most likely in reference to pictures on the internet of botched celebrity jobs). But we’re not just talking about lip injections today. On the contrary, the collagen research going on at Texas A&M could revolutionize the way we construct medical device implants. tie By Ka

Collagen is the most abundant protein Lea found in humans and the animal kingdom in general. It’s used to create a diverse range of bodily components including connective

tissues, cartilage, bones, blood vessels, and much more. This ability to become such a variety of different structures is what has scientists so intrigued. Wonmuk Hwang, an associate professor in Biomedical Engineering at TAMU, has been studying collagen networks using complex computer models. He’s come to realize that differences in the way collagen forms can be identified on the molecular level. He created a special Computer-Aided Feature Extraction (CAFE) program to help analyze the data and to make it even more practical.

With it he will be able to use his collected data to “simulate a network with the parameters of a real collagen network.” By applying this research to medical implants, engineers will be able to reduce the risk of rejection from the body due to complications with the immune system. By better understanding how collagen works, perhaps we will one day cultivate more successful techniques for repairing and replacing damaged areas of our bodies, such as cartilage or connective tissues.

No Good Deed Thriller (PG-13) UGH. That’s the best way to start this review. Just ugh. No Good Deed was released on September 12, but you’ve seen this movie before. The title may be different, but there’s nothing original about it. Not only that, but there’s a smorgasbord of plot holes, the story was underdeveloped, and the screenwriting was flat and rudimentary. To boil it down, No Good Deed follows convicted criminal Colin Evans (Idris Elba, Pacific Rim), after his parole is denied, murders two prison guards, and escapes from a transport van. He finds his ex-fiancée, kills her, and then flees the murder scene. He loses control of his car, crashes into a tree, and stumbles upon Terri’s (Taraji P. Henson, Think Like a Man) home and asks to borrow her phone. (Not to mention it’s a dark and stormy night and for whatever reason, stranger danger doesn’t apply to adults.) Colin’s an attractive guy and Terri’s husband doesn’t pay enough attention to her and so against her better judgment, let’s him in the house. Right as the sexual tension between them gets uncomfortable, Colin goes into murder mode. Terri protects her family from his assaults as best as she can and at the end of the movie, all is right with the world. Where to start with this godforsaken movie… some of the more violent scenes are completely unrealistic – there are no exit wounds from bullets and blood is minimal in serious accidents. There are some lingering questions too, like why is no one concerned that a convicted criminal killed two men and escaped from a prison van? That should be on the radio or TV or something, right? Terri graduated from NYU law school… so what is up with smart, educated women having no lick of common sense in these kinds of movies? (Why did you go upstairs when a psychopath is trying to murder you?) So many questions. This movie is 84 minutes long – some films are literally twice as long (hello Pirates of the Caribbean). Director Sam Miller had room to develop his characters and their backstories, which would have been helpful to put all of the puzzle pieces together. The screenplay was hackneyed and it’s a shame that $4.50 and an hour and a half was wasted on this film. To give credit where credit is due, the cinematography is done well and the acting by Elba and Henson is exceptional. Despite their talent, there is NO reason No Good Deed should be number one at the box office right now. No Good Deed is 84 minutes long and rated PG-13 for sequences of violence, menace, terror, and for language.

And While We Were Here Netflix (R) People love a good forbidden love story. Shakespeare was a sucker for it; and every Valentine’s Day, there’s a new Nicholas Sparks’ bookturned-movie in theaters, bringing in the big bucks from the big saps. While the romance portrayed is usually over-the-top, the drama that ensues puts characters – and audiences – through the emotional ringer. The grandeur of it all is alluring, but often not realistic. In writer/director Kate Coiro’s film And While We Were Here, her characters are less like Noah and Allie (The Notebook reference, anybody?) and more like… people. Jane (Kate Bosworth, Blue Crush) and her husband Leonard (Iddo Goldberg, Secret Diary of a Call Girl) travel to the island Ischia for Leonard’s work. When the movie opens, there is already visible tension between the couple. Jane is working on transcribing interviews with her grandmother about World War II, wanting to write a historical novel that shows a different perspective of the war. While trying to find directions to some castle ruins, she meets fellow American, Caleb (Jamie Blackely, If I Stay). Significantly younger than her, she finds his antics slightly annoying but, eventually, his boyishness grows on her. She craves his attention – something that she doesn’t often receive from her husband. The two, as you’re already suspecting, enter into a not-so-secret affair. And While We Were Here is refreshing. The pacing is much slower, and while Caleb is persistent in his attempts to woo Jane, she remains the central character. She has a reserved and quiet demeanor, but instead of overshadowing her, Caleb breaks through Jane’s icy exterior. As a result, Jane is able to discover her desires for her future, and in the end, she finds a way to essentially declare her independence despite the love triangle she’s created around herself. And While We Were Here is 83 minutes long and rated R for some sexual content, language and brief drug use.

Aggies Finish Off Cupcakes, Ready for Arkansas By

Football It’s finally here. After three weeks of watching blowouts and praying that no one gets hurt, the Aggies get to face some real competition. No offense to Lamar, Rice and SMU, but they are nothing more than warm-up games, which isn’t a bad thing for A&M. The NFL has the luxury of playing four preseason games where they can see young players and fringe players handle live game action. The NCAA doesn’t have that, so these “cupcake” games are beneficial, especially for the Aggies who have already played 14 true freshmen. Games like these allow for mistakes that won’t cost you a game. The Rice game was full of mistakes, but the Aggies were never in jeopardy of losing the game. Now that the cupcakes are over, the Aggies head to DFW for a second straight week to face the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Razorbacks had success against A&M when they weren’t a part of the SEC, winning three straight in the Southwest Classic. The Classic started in 2009 to renew an old SWC rivalry, and it was to be played at AT&T Stadium. The Aggies joined the SEC in 2012 and dominated Arkansas that year and won again in 2013. Both A&M and Arkansas started the season on the road against

Top-10 SEC opponents, both with different outcomes. Unless you are living under a rock, you know A&M went to South Carolina and blew out the Gamecocks 52-28. The Gamecocks have since validated that win for the Aggies after upsetting #6 Georgia at home. Arkansas, meanwhile, was actually tied at half against the SEC Champions, but the Tigers ran away with the game in the second half and won 45-21. The Razorbacks were shut out in the second half.

named to the same Honor Roll in the second week of the season.

Aggie Soccer After a strong start to SEC play with a 3-0 shutout of Tennessee at home (courtesy of Shea Groom’s Hat Trick) the Aggies continue conference play this week as they travel to LSU on Friday and Ole Miss on Saturday. A&M was successful against LSU and Ole Miss last year, beating them both on home turf. The soccer team is winless on the road so far, though that is only in two contests.

After A&M went on the road and won five straight in two tournaments, the Aggies went from a team not even receiving votes in the Top 25 poll to being ranked number 21 in the nation, according to the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The Aggies did not finish in the Top 25 last year.

As the Aggies march on through another successful season, the accolades continue. This time senior defender Leigh Edwards was named to the College Soccer 360 Primetime Performers Honor Roll #4. Edwards, who was 2013 Texas A&M’s Most Improved Player, scored a goal in a 3-0 win over Marquette and has been a big part as to why the Aggies have had three shutouts this year. Edwards is the second Aggie to receive the award as Kelly Monogue was

Aggie Volleyball There wasn’t a lot of talk nationally or even locally about the Texas A&M volleyball team before the season. Football usually dominates the headlines during the fall, and the soccer team has been a consistently ranked team. The volleyball team, however, isn’t making some serious noise on its own.

The Aggies got the attention of the country by going to the USC Classic and upsetting the then-ranked #6 Southern Cal Trojans 3-2. A&M didn’t have a letdown in the next match against #13 San Diego, beating them in quick fashion, 3-1. The Aggies were led once again led by freshman sensation setter Stephanie Aiple who earned alltournament team honors and for the second week in a row was SEC Freshman Player of the Week. Junior middle blocker Shelby Sullivan, who leads the team in kills, also received USC Classic alltournament team recognition.
