The Script
The Script started out in the early 2000s, founded by guitarist Mark Sheehan and vocalist Danny O’Donoghue. Both Script members were originally in an Irish band called Mytown, which achieved local acclaim but never garnered international attention. Sheehan and O’Donoghue sought a bigger horizon in Los Angeles, where they decided to produce music for a few years. When the pair relocated back to Dublin, they recruited drummer Glen Power. When the trio mixed their ideas, sound, and lyrics, the group ended up producing some of the most popular hits in the 2000s.

LUCA, a local College Station band, just came out with their new EP Mistakes to Learn From. LUCA formed in 2013 and even though the band is fairly new, their sound channels another era, specifically ‘90s post hardcore and grunge with a dash of Death Cab for Cutie and Pedro the Lion. LUCA features two current Aggies in its line-up and Mistakes to Learn From has been released on local record label, Sinkhole Texas Inc. The band recently performed a live session at Maroon Weekly—a song called“Folded Lanterns” from the 5-track EP. Available on Spotify, Google Play, Amazon, and iTunes.
Maryland rapper Logic has released his latest single “Under Pressure” this past week. The single is off his highly anticipated debut album of the same name. The rapper who amassed a huge Internet following, released four mixed tapes before being signed to Visionary Music Group and Def Jam Recordings. The single starts off with a nice breakbeat and Logic rhymes fast to slow--reminiscent of Twista or Busta Rhymes. “This is everything I ever wanted, I can’t pass it up / Life changed in a year, couldn’t happen fast enough.” Towards the end of the song, the music changes, the beat slows down, and a phone rings to round out the number. The actual song will be nine minutes long and will include phone calls from his brother and father. Logic’s album, Under Pressure, will be released October 21.

Brad Paisley alt-J Album: This is All Yours Release Date: Sept. 22, 2014 By Kate Williams Alt-J’s first album, An Awesome Wave, came out with a bang in 2012, and now two years later, the band has released a new album, This is All Yours. The lyrics are haunting yet with happy melodies. The conflicting feelings each song channels, combined with lead singer Joe Newman’s unique vocal delivery, makes for a psychedelic journey though, space, time and sound. The English indie band formed in Leeds in 2007. In January of 2014, guitarist/bassist Gwil Sainsbury left the band after a series of music festival performances and heavy touring. The band quickly picked up the pieces and moved forward, remarking that Sainsbury is still on good terms with the group despite his departure.

HURRICANE HARRY’S By Kate Williams
Granger is no stranger to College Station. He produced his first full-length album Waiting on Forever his freshman year at Texas A&M. Junior year, Granger went to Tennessee where he stayed for five years, signed a songwriter contract, and met his wife, Amber. Even with a successful music career, he graduated from Texas A&M with a bachelor’s degree and moved back to Texas. He has released a total of seven albums and one EP. His latest album, Dirt Road Driveway, was released in 2013 and reached number 15 on US country charts and 11 on US indie charts. Granger Smith has had ten Top 10 singles on the Texas Music Charts, including four on the Top 5. Smith has played by invitation at the White House, went on tours through Iraq and Kuwait visiting American soldiers, and this year he will be partnering with The Boot Campaign to raise awareness for the needs of troops as they return home from combat. Granger Smith’s alter ego Earl Dibbles Jr. originally started as a joke between brothers messing around with a camera on a ranch. “Earl represents at least half of my family, so it was easy to jump in my old truck, grab my shotgun, and slip right into character,” Smith says. “The Country Boy Song” and “Country Boy Love” are both renditions of Dibbles that have gained popularity all over the world. Networks like CMT, CBS Sports Network and YouTube have contributed to the fame. Granger Smith and his alter ego Earl Dibbles Jr. will be performing this Friday, October 3 at Harry’s. The first Friday of every month has a special meaning to the BCS community. Citizens love to let their hair down and gather in historic downtown Bryan to appreciate the arts and culture College Station’s sister city has to offer. If it’s your first time at FF, the opportunities are plentiful, including many restaurants and food trucks, packed bars with drink specials, live music on the streets and inside venues, shopping in numerous boutiques, and even a free movie in Gloria Sale Park at dusk. To start the night off, there are a variety of restaurants to choose from. Stop by Casa Rodriguez for some authentic Mexican food, or if you're craving pasta, there's always Caffe Capri. Downtown also has Indian food now (Taz), a great Bavarian restaurant (Brauhaus), and a localvore cafe (the Village). Downtown Bryan’s bustling with boutiques. If you're looking for something inexpensive, there’s Alice’s Attic thrift store; if you’re looking for something trendy, Haute Couture might be more your speed. Live music is one of the main attractions at First Friday. Grand Stafford Theater has established quite a name for themselves as a music venue, and Revolution’s Café, Murphy’s Law, and the Village Cafe all offer live music, as well. As you walk down Main Street, make sure to keep an eye out for Maroon Weekly. We’ll be rolling out the “Maroon Carpet” in front of the Stafford and taking photos of passersby. The National Acrobats of The People’s Republic of China is bringing their world-renown show to College Station, Tuesday, October 7. The show is brought to you by MSC Opas and will begin at 7pm. The troupe is know for its elaborate sets, colorful costumes, and jawdropping stunts. The company was founded in 1951 and has been one of the most applauded acrobatic troupes in China and the world. The company has created several unique acts, such as “A e r i a l Bungee Tumbling’s”, “Kicking Bowls to Heads on High Unicycles”, “Diving through Moving Hoops”, and several other choreographed acts. Since
their start in the '50s, there have been more than 200 artists that have performed with the company who have won gold and silver awards at international and national acrobatic competitions. In the '70s, the troupe was one of 72 guests to be invited to the White House by President Richard Nixon. During this time, the United States and China didn’t have diplomatic ties and the company played a key role in the reestablishment of diplomacy. Since the late 90s, the company has produced several themed productions such as “Mirage”, “Pirates!”, “Sun Birds”, “Mirage of Dragons”, and “Confuscise”. These wonderful productions have been performed almost four thousand times across Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Israel, Argentina, and Chile. To this day, the company has toured 500 cities in over 70 countries. This time around, the acrobats will bring a brand new production to Aggieland. Tickets are $28 and are available for purchase online or at the MSC box office.

Chuckwagon Cook-Off By Rebecca Ramirez
Fun fact: the chuckwagon is the food truck of the 19th century. It’s basically an old-fashioned wagon equipped with a kitchen, and its invention is attributed to Charles Goodnight, a Texas rancher who introduced the concept in 1866. The typical chuckwagon would contain a “chuck box,” an item attached to the back of the wagon with drawers and shelves for storage space, a hinged lid to provide a flat cooking surface, a water barrel, and a canvas hung underneath the wagon to carry firewood. The Chuck Wagon Cook-Off is coming to Brazos Valley Natural History Museum in Bryan, Texas October 4 through the 7. The American Chuckwagon Association is an organization dedicated to the preservation of the heritage of the chuckwagon. Its members participate in the chuckwagon cook-offs throughout the US. Through these events, members educate the public on its history and traditions...all while feeding you. Not only will you get a blast from the past, but you will also get to chow down on classic Texas delicacies, as chuckwagon competitors vie for a first place prize to see who’s chuckwagon is the best and most authentic. While you satisfy your gut, live performances from Pat Gavin and the Buckaroo Band will entertain you throughout the event. Meal tickets will be sold for $10 each. Plates will be so big that children can share. Tickets can be purchased at the event or ahead of time at the museum. The event starts at noon.

The Apple of My Eye: Man Tries to Rent Out Girlfriend to Buy iPhone 6 SHANGHAI – One Shanghai man has taken mobile dating to another level.
AUSTRALIA – After a run in with a selfproclaimed tipsy goose hunter, this crocodile’s tears were real.
In order to buy Apple’s latest installment in its smartphone series, the coveted iPhone 6, the man has reportedly offered to rent out his girlfriend. On pictures posted to Chinese social media sites, the man can be seen holding up a sign that reads: “Sharing girlfriend for pocket money. 10RMB [$1.63] per hour, 50RMB per day, 500RMB a month. If you are interested, connect to personal hotspot ‘Wi-Fi sharing master’ to check out the girlfriend.” Perhaps most shockingly, the girl was reportedly in on the whole plan, which had hourly, daily, and monthly deals up for grabs. In another online post by the man, the service items included, but were not restricted to, “eating together, studying together, saving seats (in libraries/ classrooms), three-person dates. Fees generated during dates should be split.” The Bastille Post has reported that there were plenty of interested parties.

Suspected Hippo Hoax Kicks Off Hunt in Chicago River
Stephen Moreen, 20, said he was retrieving a downed fowl from the water in the Northern Territory of Australia when the crocodile snapped hold of his arm and performed a notorious “death roll” as the reptile pulled him below water.
CHICAGO – Perhaps the Chicago River has its own version of the Loch Ness Monster, or maybe it’s just a hungry hippo. A bizarre 27-second clip has surfaced from the depths of YouTube, appearing to show a hippopotamus chilling out in the center of Chicago. It’s already accumulated more than 40,000 views and has now sparked a hippo hunt for those who believe it’s all just a humungous hoax.
That’s when he saw his chance.
In the clip, two men can be heard talking about a creature going underwater. “That boat is pretty much heading right towards it,” one says. Seconds later, the “hippo” surfaces again, and he says, “There it is, there it is. Do you see it?” The other responds, “Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh my god, what is that?”
“It made me cry. I’m fine, I’m alive. It could have been bad. It could have got my leg,” Moreen said looking back. “I have a scratch on my back, the rest on my arm. He ripped out a bit of skin and left me with two or three holes.”

Humans have a huge influence on the world. Everything from the environment to whether or not various species thrive or die is heavily impacted by our existence. Game hunting, oil spills, and deforestation are several human activities that have caused concern for the welfare of various species; but what about the way we eat? Glenn Jones, an oceanography professor at Texas A&M Galveston, and his graduate student, Raven Walker, have been studying how the popularity of certain food items affects living resources. Studying menus and food prices for the last century and a half, they have been examining patterns
between consumer demand and depletion of related species. Passenger pigeons and canvasback ducks both had their moment on human taste buds in the later part of the 19th century. Both fowls appeared on high-class menus beginning in the 1870s, with their prices rising with time. By 1914, the passenger pigeon went completely extinct, and in 1918 the Migratory Bird Treaty Act was passed, installing laws policing the hunting of migratory birds between the United States and Great Britain. As a species, we obviously need to understand how our culinary choices affect other

Walker also believes our control over species via our diet could be used for good. Lionfish are an invasive species that have been introduced into Florida. She suggests that “getting more restaurants to offer them on their menus [might] be a good approach to the problem.” Perhaps we will be entering into an era where our restaurant dining choices could actually help with overpopulation in a calculated way, similarly to how small scale hunters already aid in preventing species like deer from overpopulation.

Kappa Alpha Theta Hosts Theta Fiesta

Calling all fajita lovers! Kappa Alpha Theta will be hosting their 5th Annual Theta Fiesta on Friday, October 10. Guests can expect a full dinner, raffles, as well as live entertainment from The Brewers, a band comprised of Aggie grads. The tickets for the event are $5 before the event and $7 at the door, and can be purchased from a Theta member starting a week before the event. Raffle tickets will also be available at the event starting at $10, with prizes such as a $700 ring from David Gardner’s and an Aggie basket filled with goodies such as a YETI Cooler, $125 worth of t-shirts, gift cards to local restaurants, and 4 tickets to an A&M football game. All proceeds from the Fiesta will benefit the Scotty’s House Child Advocacy. The center, which was established in 1995, is located in Bryan and aims to help children who are victims of child abuse. This year, Theta’s goal is to raise $20,000 for the center, hoping to surpass last year’s $16,000.

Buffalo Stampede and Buddy Walk Embrace Fall Weather By Eunice De Luna The 6th annual Buffalo Stampede is Saturday, October 4 and will feature two races: a half marathon that will start at 7:30am and a 5k race that will start at 7:45am. The races will be timed with disposable bib tags on USATF certified courses and time results will be available on allsportstiming.com. The half marathon course passes through open country, neighborhoods, and parks. It also has a downhill 2 mile finish. The 5k follows the first 1.55 miles of the half marathon and turns around to end at the Brazos Valley Natural History Museum, where the race started. Wiener Fest is coming to College Station October 4. Not only will you be able to visually enjoy and fawn over wienie dogs (the kinds that bark and have tails), but while you’re at it, you'll simultaneously be supporting a great cause. Wiener Fest is the largest annual fundraiser for the Aggieland Humane Society. The money raised from the fundraiser will go to helping homeless animals in the College Station area. There will be a multitude of exciting and paw-some activities at Wiener Fest, including a wiener race—where you can bring your fuzzy friend to compete against fellow wiener dogs in a friendly race to the finish line. The “wanna-be” race is for other breeds of dogs wanting to participate in the racing festivities of the fundraiser. If you would like to get in the middle of the action with your own canine, the 5k Walk/ Run is perfect for you. In the costume contest segment of the fest, you can dress your dog and yourself as your favorite fictional cartoon or superhero duo! Grand Stafford First Friday Lineup

Grand Stafford’s free First Friday concert will feature Electric Attitude, MODOC, Videoing, and Taz & Company. Hailing from Houston, headliner Electric Attitude has earned the Houston Press Music Award for “Best Soul/Funk/R&B” act in 2011, 2012, and 2013 and they are nominated for the award again this year. EA doesn’t have one distinct genre in which they classify themselves, instead merging elements of rock, blues, funk, soul, and disco into one futuristic sound. Front man Blake Shepard’s voice is reminiscent of The Black Keys, and the band has two albums, Skin Tight and Solid Gold and Laser Laser Laser Beams. MODOC, who are Nashville-transplants originally from Indiana, don’t mess around with gimmicks often found in today’s rock. Adhering to classic rock as their inspiration, MODOC was Fox Sports’ Band of the Month and their song “Devil on My Shoulder” was featured in promos for ABC’s 666 Park Avenue. The band’s self-titled album was released on August 27, 2013 and can be previewed on their official website. Videoing, a music project from Austin, mixes high-tech intentions with gears and whistles. Adreon Henry and Brendan Reilly, the two behind Videoing, were formerly known as Single Frame and released four albums in the ‘00s. Making their return in 2012 with a new name, the duo opted for unorthodox recording methods, and their album, Reader LP, features tracks recorded in bedrooms, kitchens, closets, and showers. Taz & Company’s lead singer, Taraz Nosrat, is a recent graduate of Texas A&M. His album, The Divine Spark, was created over the span of three years and is an original, world album taken from the principles of the Bahà’ì religion. Taraz, a multi-instrumentalist, wrote guitar, viola, ukulele, melodica, ocarina, and vocal parts for the album. The Divine Spark can be listened to online. Doors open at 8pm and there is no cover charge.

The Maze Runner Sci-Fi (PG-13) Hey. Guess what. The movie is different from the book. Glad that’s out of the way, because every single movie that’s been adapted from a novel—except for maybe Holes—is different from the book. How is this still source of outrage? Anyway, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien, Teen Wolf) wakes up in an elevator. He has no idea where he is, where he’s going, and – at this point – what his name is. When the elevator’s ceiling doors are opened, he’s greeted by 60 teenage boys and a huge green field where humongous walls box the community in. Alby (Aml Ameen, Lee Daniels’ The Butler) and Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Game of Thrones) explain the situation to him: they don’t know why or how they got to the Glade; but they’ve established a community with the resources they’ve got. It’s not perfect, but it works. Every month, a new boy and supplies come up in the elevator. It’s been this way for three years. Shortly after, two boys run out from an opening in the walls. They’re called “Runners,” and their primary job is to run the maze, memorize it, and report their findings in hopes of discovering a way out. The walls change every night, but so far, there haven’t been any leads on how to escape. Thomas is fascinated with them and wants to become a Runner, and after he’s attacked by one of them (who’s subsequently banished), he’s made a run. Right as a routine begins to settle with Thomas, noise signals that the elevator is coming back up, but it’s too soon for the monthly supplies. Much to the Gladers surprise, instead of a boy, there’s a girl inside (Kaya Scodelario, Skins). Her presence serves as the catalyst for a change in the Glade. The walls don’t close at night, the community is attacked by horrible machine-monster-things called Grievers, and everything that the boys have worked so hard to achieve is leveled in a night. A handful of boys (and the girl, Teresa) decide to go inside the maze and fight their way out. What they discover about the current condition of the world is so frightening that being imprisoned in the Glade seems preferable.
The Liberator Drama (Not Rated) The first look of Símon Bólivar is of the back of his head. He sits in a serious posture and his military uniform leaves no question that he’s the guy in charge. He wanders up through stairs and corridors— the audience still not seeing his face—and he’s kind but curt in all of his responses. He’s a busy guy; he doesn’t have time to waste on pleasantries. The first glance of his face is when he opens a bedroom door and is greeted by a woman. Quickly, his demeanor changes and the two embrace. Before the two can lay together, there’s an attack on the building, and Bólivar must escape. Bólivar is younger, a Venezuelan aristocrat visiting the royal Spanish court. While there, he meets Maria-Theresa del Toro and the two fall in love. He brings her from Spain to Venezuela and the two enjoy their marriage for a whopping six months before she succumbs to yellow fever. In his grief, Bólivar travels back to Paris where he picks several different poisons to try to forget his anguish. Bólivar mentor shakes him out of his pity and reminds him of what he is capable of, what he was taught to be—the man who will free Venezuela from a threecentury Spanish colonial rule.
There are some pretty significant differences from the book-to-movie transition, but that’s to be expected; and despite some serious plot holes, the film is never boring. Even in the slower parts, the audience is being filled in with important information, and there’s either a humorous or dramatic event to keep people from going cross-eyed.
For clocking in at around two hours, director Alberto Arvelo packs a lot into this film. All of the material is important and nothing really outshines. While there isn’t any particular scene that stands out from the rest; the entire film is solid. The acting by Édgar Ramírez (who plays Bólivar) is phenomenal. It’s easy for performances to get campy in historical films, but his acting is sincere.
The Maze Runner is 113 minutes and rated PG-13 for thematic elements and intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, including some disturbing images.
The Liberator will be released on October 3. It’s 119 minutes long and is Not Rated, but there is some violence and sexuality/nudity in the film.

Aggies Find New Identity as Road Warriors
Football At the beginning of the season, Mississippi State looked like the easiest SEC road test the Aggies would have. It doesn’t look that way anymore. The Bulldogs went to Baton Rouge and beat up on LSU, going from unranked to #14 in the polls. With multi-purpose QB Dak Prescott running the offense, the A&M defense will be on their heels all game. Mississippi State will also have a bye-week before the Aggies arrive. The Aggies are not scared to play on the road in the SEC. A&M is 7-2 on the road, including road wins over #9 South Carolina (2014), #15 Mississippi State (2012), and who can forget the upset of #1 Alabama (2012). The two losses came in 2013 to #15 LSU and #5 Missouri. MSU is the lowest rank road contest for A&M this year as the Ags travel to #3 Alabama and #5 Auburn. Coach Sumlin has created an “us versus the world mentality” for his team. It has worked for them so far, as the Aggies aren’t afraid of any challenge. Few people gave A&M a chance in the road opener to South Carolina, especially without
Johnny Manziel. Sumlin had his team prepared, and first year starters Kenny Hill, Armani Watts, and Myles Garrett performed like seasoned vets. The cowbells of Mississippi State won’t scare the Aggies; they’ll just add fuel to the fire. Soccer After two tough road tests, the Aggies are back home to the friendly confines of Ellis Field where they are undefeated so far this year. The #10 Aggies open the two-game home stand against #7 Florida. Florida is the only team in the SEC ranked higher than the Aggies and the two split both games against each other last year. A&M’s win was in the SEC Championship game and gave the Aggies their first SEC Tournament victory. The second game this weekend for the Aggies is against Kentucky at 11am on Sunday. The Aggies didn’t face off against Kentucky last year. In the first week of SEC play, senior Shea Groom was awarded Offensive Player of the Week and junior Karlie Mueller was
named Defensive Player of the Week. Groom scored a hat trick in a 3-0 versus Tennessee while Mueller added an assist and aggressive defense to keep the Volunteers scoreless. Volleyball The Aggies start SEC play after an impressive non-conference showing, going 8-3 and knocking off two ranked teams. A&M is only one of three SEC teams ranked in the AVCA poll, checking in at #22. The two teams ahead of A&M are Florida (#10) and Kentucky (#14), were both picked ahead of the Aggies in the SEC preseason poll. Neither team, however, has shown much separation between themselves and A&M. The Aggies will get a shot at Florida and Kentucky on the road, where the Aggies have yet to lose and pulled their upset wins on the road. A&M also will play Kentucky at home. The Aggies get an early shot to prove they belong in the top tier of the conference as they play the Wildcats on Sunday (11am on the SEC Network).
