TAMU’s Howdy Farm Now Open for Business By Chris Zebo
Last week, we caught up with Jessica Newman, a volunteer involved with TAMU's Howdy Farm. The student volunteers who till the plot of land on West Campus are now operating a market at the farm, open to the public Tuesdays and Thursdays 1-5pm. The market is a sustainable structure made of re-purposed materials and solar panels, much of which was purchased with a grant awarded by the university. MW: So what is the Howdy Farm, for people unfamiliar with it? Newman: Howdy Farm is Texas A&M’s student-run farm, and we are directly on West Campus behind the Horticulture Forest Science Building. We're run by students, volunteers, and student officers. MW: How long has it been in existence? Has it been around for a while? Newman: Since 2009. MW: How many acres would you say are allotted to the farm? Newman: About half an acre. We have an acre of land that we haven’t planted on yet but is available to us, and we’re actually planning on doing that. We also have raised beds, like 24 raised beds.
building is open to you whether you want to come and study and bring a laptop or purchase produce grown on campus. MW: What kind of merchandise are we talking about? Newman: Right now, we have t-shirts and we’re ordering decals, which are basically just stickers that you can put on your car, your laptops, your water bottles—whatever. Down the road, we want to make it more shop-like. We have visions of getting tote bags, which people can buy for their produce. MW: And you’re also selling produce at this as well right? Newman: Yes, and also the idea behind Shop Hours is beside just fresh produce we also are going to start doing canning and herb-drying and stuff like that. MW: What kind of produce is available, seasonally?
Or is that something the school sponsored? Newman: So, that was through the Aggie Green Fund Grant. We applied for it 3 years ago and finally got the building; the Aggie Green Fund Grant is through A&M. MW: Okay, can you describe the building a little bit to me? Newman: Its really awesome! You should come see it! It's built by Reclaimed Space, a firm based in Austin, and they use all reclaimed materials. We actually have a binder that describes where everything's from. Some of the wood is from a barn in Kentucky, some of the metal paneling is reclaimed from a barn in Bastrop, Texas. So it's all reclaimed and its run by solar panels that we got donated by a Lighthouse Solar. The inside is all decorated by a firm in Wimberley, Texas called Shop the Treehouse. Our buildings will usually have cables on the inside, but for shop hours we

MW: So now you're offering produce for sale to the public? What's the name of the farmers market?
Newman: Gosh, it's always changing. But right now, we have sweet potatoes--which are awesome, those have been really popular—and okra, all kinds of peppers--ranging from bell peppers to jalapenos—and eggplant, zucchini, cucumbers, and we just planted all of our fall crops.

HURRICANE HARRY’S By Eunice De Luna Los Angeles-based rock band, Buckcherry, is bringing rock back to Harry’s, Tuesday, October 14. Buckcherry formed in 1995 when lead front man Joshua Todd and guitarist Keith Nelson met through via their mutual tattoo artist. The band released two albums, Buckcherry and Time Bomb; their debut self-titled album went gold, whereas Time Bomb was considered a mild success. The band eventually split up in the summer of 2002. The band reunited a few years later to release 15, an album that propelled them back into stardom. Two of their songs, “Crazy Bitch” and “Sorry”, both hit number one on the charts. Their fifth studio album, All Night Long, debuted at #10 on the Top Billboard Top 200 album chart and was the #1 rock debut. The band has toured with AC/DC, KISS, and Motley Crüe, and this past summer they released a new EP featuring a cover of Icona Pop’s hit “I Love it (I Don’t Care).” Otherwise and Signal Rising will open the show, and tickets are $20 and can be purchased at Mobile Toys, Cavender’s, Hurricane Harry’s box office, or online at harrys.bcsclubs.com. Doors open at 9pm.

Fans of Childish Gambino, A$AP Ferg will appreciate Run the Jewels and Juicy J lovers will enjoy the beats. Run the Jewels will be the headliners of the evening. Baby Baby is an experimental pop-rock band from Atlanta, full of percussion and keys. Fans of MeWithoutYou or Wavves will dig Baby Baby. The Outfit consists of 3 born-and-raised Texans, and the Dallas natives manage to mix old-school rap with a heavy electronic sound. Riff Raff @ Schotzi’s By Daniella Delgado and Connie Song
His trademark look includes cornrows, tattoos, and iced grills. He, along with his date, Katy Perry, dressed up in full-denim outfits reminiscent of JT and Britney’s infamous VMAs appearnce. He once called out Sam Smith for cropping him out of a photo. He'll be at Schotzi’s on Friday, October 10. Yes, we’re talking about Riff Raff. Before there was Riff Raff, there was Horst Simco, a native Houstonian who started his career by passing out homemade CDs in the middle of the mall. It wasn’t until he made the cast of MTV’s From G’s to Gents that he adopted his stage moniker, Riff Raff. After hearing a rumor – and nothing official – that he was being considered by MTV, he got the logo tattooed onto his neck (go big or go home, right?). To his luck, he was cast…only to be eliminated fairly early in the season. However, the show gave him enough publicity to jumpstart his career. Flash forward a few years and Riff Raff has made quite a name for himself—mostly by way of self-promotion via the Interweb and an indirect homage from James Franco (we'll get to that in a minute). His new album Neon Lights made quite the splash, landing onto Rolling Stone’s “Must-Hear Albums of 2014” list, and the release features Mac Miller, Childish Gambino, and Mike Posner on tracks. Initially, in typical Riff Raff fashion, had no bearing on the release date for his album. Produced by Diplo, Neon Lights includes songs like “How to Be the Man “and “Tip Toe Wing in My Jawwdinz” (English translation: Tiptoeing in my Jordans). From allegedly serving as James Franco’s inspiration for his character in Spring Breakers to casually dating Katy Perry, the Gucci-lovin’ Houstonian certainly marches to the beat of his own drum.

Scientist: ‘Drunk’ moose terrorizing Sweden likely not even tipsy
B.O. be gone: Washington city bans body odor with new law
SWEDEN — For years, people have been delighted by news every autumn that moose in Sweden would get intoxicated on apples that have fallen to the ground becoming rotten and fermented, causing the antlered animals to get into all sorts of predicaments like getting stuck in swing sets and tangled in trees.
BURIEN, Washington — Seeking to protect citizens from their putrid peers, the city of Burien, Washington, has passed regulation banning people with bad body odor from public places.
But now, scientists are saying the inebriation is all a myth. An expert on wild animals at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Professor Petter Kjellander told Swedish Radio Science News that moose, which normally weigh between 450 and 1,200 pounds, are simply way too big to actually get drunk on just a few rotten apples. He also mentioned that he and his colleagues have never actually seen any evidence of high blood alcohol content in a moose, and hypothesized that their befuddled behavior could be blamed on their aggression t o w a r d protecting t h e i r fermented fruit stash.
Sunken Secrets
AUSTIN, Texas — Seeking to raise awareness on subjects like energy sustainability, science education, and a higher quality of life, University College at Huston-Tillotson Professor Jeff Wilson has decided to move into a 36-square-foot recycling bin for a full year. “In America, the average American homes are about 2,500 feet more or less, and we wanted just to see whether one can have a pretty good life on a lot less. So in this case we are living in 1 percent of size of average American home and our main hypothesis is that one may have a pretty good life in much, much less,” Wilson said in an online interview. Wilson said the hardest part about living in the bin was dealing with the temperature, though now he has built-in temperature controls. He also said dealing with the smell emanating from the toilet can be an issue.
Croatia probably seems like an unexpected place for a Texas A&M professor to be conducting research, but that’s exactly where nautical archaeologist Filipe Castro has been spending a lot of his time the last few years. In 2011, Castro started work on a shipwreck off the coast of Croatia with co-director Dr. Irena Radic Rossi of the University of Zadar, Croatia (located east of Italy, across the Adriatic Sea).

The ship, the Gagliana Grossa, sunk in a storm near Biograd na Moru in 1583, taking with it many stories just waiting to be rediscovered. According to Castro, the ship has a very interesting history. During the
time after its birth in Venice in 1569, the ship was seized by the Ottomans, used in a war, and finally sold to a businessman, where it made its way back to Venice for repairs before meeting its demise on its first trip back out. With the ship, down went many treasures, including gifts of the finest
The new law bans certain behaviors in public, which prohibits visitors to city parks, city hall, and the library from using obscene language, not wearing enough clothing, and having poor hygiene. The price to pay if one violates the law? Banishment from that space for up to one year. Although the law was designed to help protect people from foul smells, it has caused a stink for some people. If I lived in Burien, WA, I could be arrested....” Additionally, the American Civil Liberties Union claims it could single out the homeless.

Though the wreck was discovered in 1967, along with many fineries, weapons, and other random trinkets, Castro, Rossi, and their team continue to learn more about this enchanting ship. With the use of modern technology and additional information they have learned from their expeditions (including the discovery of the ship’s keel), they are working to create 3-D images of the ship and calculate more precise measurements of its parts to better understand its construction.

Jessie J
The soulful songstress Jessie J is at it again. After mediocre success from her sophomore album, Alive, the UK sensation is back with a new album that’s true to her creative talents. Sweet Talker was co-written by Jessie J and features musical powerhouses Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, and 2-Chainz.
Album: Sweet Talker
The first single off the album is “Bang Bang”. The female power anthem features pop princess Ariana Grande and rap star Nicki Minaj. The single reached the top 10 in Australia, Canada, Denmark, and the United States. It features a catchy hook and undeniable dance beats all while the trio sings sassy; “See, anybody could be bad to you / You need a good girl to blow your mind”.
Release Date: Oct. 13, 2014
Recommended Tracks: Bang Bang Personal By Eunice De Luna
“Personal” is more intimate and showcases J’s raw talent. Instrumentation throughout the album is sometimes pared down to mellow guitars and an abundance of finger snaps; but J’s voice is the true stand-out. Available for pre-order on Google Play, iTunes, and Android.

Midnight on Main, a local College Station band, just released their new album, Storm to Remember.
Valerie Poxleitner, aka LIGHTS, started writing songs at a very early age, using bible verses to prompt song titles for her material. At the age of 18, she became a writer for Sony/ATV Music Publishing, but decided early on that there was more out there for her than just a behind-the-scenes gig. With just her instruments, lyrics, and blind faith, she hit the road.
Before Lady Antebellum’s new album, 747, dropped September 30, the group released two singles. Country music charttopper, “Bartender”, put the band back on people’s radars and excited Lady A fans. With their past few records leaning towards the chill end of the spectrum, the new album has a faster tempo with a refreshing new sound.
In 2008, she released her first album, LIGHTS EP. She was soon invited to the summer Warped Tour and received a Juno Award for New Artist of the Year. With a unique style, good looks, and an innovative alt–rock synthesis, LIGHTS’ music spread like wildfire.
Antebellum revamped their music after getting new producer Nathan Chapman, famous for his work with Taylor Swift. In an interview, the band described their latest release as “fresh” with a “different energy.” It’s the same Lady Antebellum, just a little more pop-country. It will be interesting to see if the new album appeals more to the pop or country crowd. There are fears they are steering too far from their country roots, but the band insists they put their country fans first when writing new material.
The band ultimately describes themselves as “a good group of guys that enjoy what [they] love doing most, which is playing and jamming [their] hearts out to music!” Massey’s inspirations include Adam Levine, Bruno Mars, and Panic At the Disco. Ironically, Massey’s voice can, without a doubt, be compared to the level of those singers. Along with Massey’s vocals, the band as a whole is tight as a knot. Storm to Remember has a prominent old Maroon 5 and Gavin DeGraw vibe. Rock with alternative flair, the new release is highly recommended.
Little Machines, LIGHTS newest album, shows just how much Poxleitner has grown as a musician. Machines is reminiscent of 1980s’ synth pop; it’s danceable and catchy.

Phillips: I don’t always feel like I’m famous; I just feel like a musician, on the road. I guess it’s nice to get a free meal once in awhile. Sometimes, I’ll get a free dessert, and that’s always nice! So I always take advantage of those perks. I’ll get free desserts, or someone will ask to buy me a drink, and I’m like, “Sure!” If someone wants to let me skip in line at the airport or something, I’m like, “Thank you very much! I appreciate it.” Ellie Sloan: How did you get started? Did you do choir growing up? Phillips: I used to sing choir at church all of the time; not at school, but at church I sang in the choir. But I would sing very quietly because I didn’t think I could sing anything. Both of my sisters have angelic voices, and my mom as well. So they are all very musical. I didn’t get hard into music until I was 14 or 15; but yeah, I sang in choir at church. Lily (@Norsky9): You recently joined forces with The Script to play dates in South Africa. Are you planning on touring any other countries soon? Phillips: Right now, not that I know of. I hope there is something in the future for me in the next year to do something internationally, but for now it’s definitely a good plan. I hope something like that happens. Emily Osborne: Did you go to college and what did you study? Phillips: I did go to college! I graduated with a degree in industrial systems maintenance. You can tell her to Google that; and that’s because I’ve already forgotten what it is. So yeah–it was a technical college, and yeah… I went there and got that because I didn’t know what else to do with my life. Jen (@jenc715): The lyrics in two of your songs mention the number 10,000: “Lead On”, where you mention 10,000 hands, and “Fly”, where you mention 10,000 faces. Random? Or some kind of significance? Phillips: You know, it kind of just flowed well to me, and that’s about as high as I can count. It can symbolize anything you want it to. To me, it’s just being in the crowd, and that’s just a lot of people. That was an interesting question.

Dating back to 1971, the Century Singers were the first chorus and student organization that allowed both women and men to become members in their organization. Bound by a shared passion for music, the 87 members have opportunities to participate in social events and they gather weekly for rehearsals. The group has performed a Mozart piece with the Brazos Valley Symphony and Chorale, collaborated with the Nordic Choir, and had the opportunity to travel internationally to perform a concert in Germany earlier this year.

Kyle Field Gets Some Midseason Changes
Football It seems like it’s been forever since our Aggies played a home game even though it was just September 13 that A&M had their win over Rice. Three weeks is an eternity during football season. As the Aggies have faced many changes in the last three weeks, so has the renovated Kyle Field. The first big change will be new turf on the playing surface – the grass became full of divots during the A&M-Rice game and made both sides question the integrity of the field. The second change is that the cannon will be moved back into Kyle Field. While this move won’t impact the players much, it‘ll make the crowds happy. It seemed like something was missing in the new Kyle Field, and without the cannon, games just didn’t feel right. The cannon’s new location is now at the top of the southeast activation tower. Soccer As the Aggies keep on racking up SEC wins, the stats show a balanced arsenal for the #9 ranked team in the country. A&M is getting after it on both offense and defense. A&M leads the SEC on Shots on Goals (9.82) and Goals per game (2.64). A pair of seniors lead the charge for Aggie offense as Shea Groom and Kelley Monogue rank one and two in goals
in the SEC. Shea Groom is in the top 10 nationally in goals scored. Both Groom and Mongue are also in the top 10 in the SEC in shots. While the Aggies are in the middle of the pack of goals allowed, they are third in the conference in shots on goal allowed per game. They also are ranked 7th in shutouts with four. They lead the SEC in scoring margin. Cross Country Sophomore Karis Jochen’s eighth place finish in the Roy Griak Invitational earned her the SEC Women’s Runner of the week. Jochen, an A&M Consolidated graduate, finished in the top 10 among 390 runners, with a 21:20.0 time in the 6,000-meter course. She posted the fastest time in the SEC so far this year and had the second best sophomore time in the race. Texas A&M finished 13th among 37 schools in the Invitational. Basketball The men and women’s basketball teams will be hosting the Basketball Plaza Palooza on Friday October 10. The event will be at the plaza northeast of Kyle Field from 10-11:30pm, prior to Midnight Yell. The event will feature shooting contests along with food, cup, and towel giveaways. You can also meet the teams.
