Blake Shelton
Bringing Back the Sunshine is already number three on the iTunes country chart just two weeks after being released and it’s still climbing. Born in Oklahoma, Shelton moved to Nashville to launch his music career just two weeks after his high school graduation. The graduate landed himself a solo contract with Giant Records after selling his songs to several publishing houses. In 2001, seven years after his graduation, he made a splash in the charts with his single “Austin”, which spent five weeks at number one. Since then, Shelton has been on the charts consistently--“Boys ‘Round Here”, “Sure Be Cool If You Did”, and “Honey Bee” to name a few.
Album: Bringing Back the Sunshine
Release Date: Sept. 30, 2014
Now a judge on The Voice, working side by side with artists Adam Levine, Shakira, and Cee Lo Green, the shows audience gets a behind the scenes view of Shelton’s creativity, as he preps his team to do nothing less but dazzle and potentially win the competition.

known for and exemplifies the professionalism we all know of him from The Voice. “Neon Lights” pines over a break up by bar hopping and partying, and “Lonely Tonight” is a solemn track about missing a special someone. In comparison to past albums, Sunshine’s subject matter is mature, owing to Shelton’s vast experience in the music biz. Bring Back the Sunshine is available on iTunes for $10.99 and Spotify.

King of the South, rapper T.I is releasing his ninth studio album under Columbia Records. The album is set to be the first of a trilogy. The first two singles off the album, “About the Money” and “No Mediocre”, peaked at number 59 and number 33 on the Billboard Top 100. “About the Money” features a slow and steady beat with strokes of piano keys in the background as up-and-coming rapper Young Thug raps the first verse. “No Mediocre”, a song dismissing average women features his Australian prodigy, Iggy Azalea. Chris Brown, The Dream, Jeezy, Skylar Grey, Usher and Pharrell Williams, who also serves as executive producer, are featured on the album.
The Big Revival is Kenny Chesney’s 15th studio album. After his two top ten hits in ‘95—both off All I Need to Know—the chart-topping country artist released one hit after another. With his new song “American Kids” hitting country radio on 117 stations, landing #20 on the Billboard chart after just two days of airplay, and topping the iTunes Country Chart since the digital release, Revival continues to keep Chesney at the top of the game. Rather than the typical party songs (still included on the album), Chesney has matured and written songs with reflective subject matter. With guest appearances from Alison Krauss, Dan Tyminski, and Grace Potter, the 11-song album moves from the catchy “American Kids” to some thumping rockers, a few personal ballads, and the electrifying title track.

Irish singer-songwriter Hozier dropped a new self-titled album October 7. Hozier’s soulful, spiritual music rattles your eardrums and rocks your world. His dark lyrics pair perfectly with the music’s rock undertones, adding a smidgen of blues to melodies for good measure. Fans of Alt-J will be able to identify with Hozier’s sultry voice, and Arctic Monkey lovers will jam the album’s strong electric guitar overtones. He fuses complicated pitch changes with dramatic poetry, and the lyrics have quite a few religious undertones. Despite the religiosity, many songs resonate with the helplesslyin-love and heartbroken. His pre-released singles “Take Me to Church” and “Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene” set the album’s tone, as Hozier idolizes his lover and compares her to the church.

HURRICANE HARRY’S By Eunice De Luna After 200 nights on the road and recording an album with Randy Rodgers, Bowen has been working on his 7th studio album. No rookie to the country scene, he’s been making hits for almost a decade. “Saturday Night” and “Songs About Trucks” are a few of Bowen’s popular sing-alongs, and he recently dropped a new single, “When I Woke Up Today”, which pairs upbeat electric guitar with his signature Texas twang. After touring the West Coast in August, Bowen is expected to release his new and much anticipated album on October 28. Lucky for fans in BCS, there’s a high probability he’ll play songs from the upcoming album at Harry’s. He’s currently on tour, and after a few dates in the Lone Star, he’s headed to Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, and more as he rounds out his tour in January, 2015. Bowen will be joined by Folk Family Revival, a blues-Americana group out of Magnolia. Doors open at 9pm. Tickets available at harrys.bcsclubs.com.

Parent’s Just Don’t Understand By Eunice De Luna
Brazos Valley Troupe opens its 21st season with a hilarious family-friendly, sketch comedy: Parent’s Just Don’t Understand, written by Brian Starchman. Some of childhood’s most poignant memories come from the embarrassing outfits mothers forced us in, or the (dysfunctional) family road trips where something wacky happened. Nick Roman, one of the directors, boasts “the show is hilarious in that it reminds you of your own family life as a kid, but also shows that parents and their kids aren’t always as different as they believe they appear to be.” This time around, managing-artistic director, M.A. Sterling, who usually directs the BVT productions, is letting six different seasoned veteran TROUPErs direct the show. All six directors explain that having the ability to direct the actors was an amazing experience. TROUPEr/director Mikayla Moats says, “Directing scenes in this show has been a blast, because everyone walks in with a character, and they know where they’re going. I just have to help them get there.” Parent’s Just Don’t Understand will be performed for one weekend only at BVT’s 29th Street Studio, located at 3705 East 29th Street in Bryan. Tickets will be $15 for adults, $12 for BVT members, and $6 for children ages 2-12. The show will run starting on Thursday, October 16 at 7pm, followed by Friday and Saturday show times at 7:30pm and Sunday, October 19 at 3pm. If the Aggies beat Alabama on Saturday, tickets will be sold at a special buy-one-get-one-free rate.

Sean McConnell By Eunice De Luna
Sean McConnell grew up listening to his parents playing songs in the coffee houses of the Boston folk scene, but during his adolescence, his immediate family moved to Atlanta. Leaving all his friends and extended family behind proved to be hard on him. In order to cope with the move, he found music to be an outlet. He discovered his dad’s guitar under his parents’ bed, and after writing hundreds of songs, he started performing at school functions and coffee houses. McConnell attended college at Middle Tennessee State University, and by the time he graduated, he had released two independent records. At MTSU he majored in music business, and during his sophomore year, he started working with Quantum Talent, a college booking agency. This led to McConnell signing a publishing deal with Warner/Chappel Music, where artists such as Tim McGraw and Brad Paisley have recorded. In 2008, McConnell joined CEK Music in Austin and now splits his time between writing songs and touring. McConnell is currently on the road playing everywhere from Cambridge, Massachusetts to Nashville. He recently played with Wade Bowen and Randy Rogers at the venerable Ryman Theatre. McConnell will be playing at Harry’s, Wednesday, October 22. Tickets are $10 and doors will open at 9pm. Tickets can be purchased online at harrys.bcsclubs.com/events.

Swingle Singers @ Rudder Theatre OPAS will present legendary a cappella group The Swingle Singers as the first performance on the 2014-15 Intimate Gatherings series on Thursday, October 16 at 7:30pm in Rudder Theatre. The Grammy Award-winning, seven-member vocal ensemble is currently made up of Sara Brimer (Soprano), Joanna Goldmsith-Eteson (Soprano), Clare Wheler (Alto), Oliver Griffiths (Tenor), Kevin Fox (Bass) and Edward Randell (Bass). For their concert at Rudder, they'll perform a program of new and favorite songs. OPAS Executive Director Anne Black explains, “When you present a season filled with huge programs like Broadway tours, The Wild Kratts, and concerts by the likes of Phillip Phillips and Willie Nelson, there’s a tendency to overlook some of our more intimate programs like this one by The Swingle Singers. It is my hope that music fans will fill Rudder Theatre and soak in their amazing vocal talent. When I watch ‘The Swingles’ perform, I have to constantly remind myself that all of the sounds I’m hearing are produced by their voices. It’s going to be an incredible night of music!” In addition to their October 16 concert, The Swingles will be working with students in the choral programs at A&M Consolidated, College Station, Rudder and Bryan High Schools as part of an OPAS in-school residency program. Fifteen students from the the A&M Consolidated choral program will join the singers for a few selections during the October 16th concert in Rudder Theatre. Remaining tickets range from $30-$40 (regular)/$25-$34 (student) and are on sale now at MSC Box Office (979-845-1234/MSCOPAS.org).

Activists nominate Einstein the dog to unseat Oakland mayor
Golden ‘Glamburger’ tops the menu as world’s most expensive sandwich LONDON —Honky Tonk restaurant in the swanky neighborhood of Chelsea is serving up the world’s most expensive burger. This whopper costs £1,100 (or about $1,780), and that doesn’t include the tip. The “Glamburger” consists of a patty made with 220 grams of Kobe Wagyu beef minced with 60 grams of New Zealand venison, seasoned with smoked Himalayan salt, and it’s stuffed with a liquid pocket of black truffle brie. But the bill doesn’t stop there. This sandwich is served with a Canadian lobster poached in Iranian saffron, bacon drizzled in maple syrup, Beluga caviar and a hickory-smoked duck egg meticulously coated with edible gold leaf. The bun, also coated with flaky gold leaf, is seasoned with a Japanese matcha and cream mayonnaise. And it’s all topped off with a spritz of mango and champagne jus and a peppering of grated white truffle. This 1,110-pound burger could also have you loading on the pounds — it contains a whopping 2,618 calories (more than the recommended daily intake for an adult).
Junk DNA Isn’t Junk Afterall
SAN FRANCISCO — In the dog-eat-dog world of politics, activists from the Occupy Oakland movement are pushing voters to unseat incumbent Mayor Jean Quan with an actual dog, and his name is Einstein.
Sea Doos of the future: A robotic dolphin and jet-powered water bikes LAKE POWELL, Utah —YouTube star Devin Graham and a group of friends can be seen in a new video posted online playing with what we’re hoping are the water toys of the future: the Seabreacher (a robotic dolphin), the Jetovators (flying bikes), and the Freedom Flyer (a jet-powered VW van). These water crafts are designed to fly, flip, spin, dip and dive through the water, and the sky, giving modern-day Jet Skis a run for their money. The Jetovator, the less expensive of the new toys, costs about $6,975, works similar to a Sea Doo through a 40-foot hose requiring a minimum of 130 horsepower. Riders mount the craft like a pogo stick and can steer it up to 30 feet in the air at 25 mph. The Seabreacher, which has actually been around for about ten years, can be customized to various shapes (including whales and sharks). Ranging from $80,000 to $100,000, this craft can be handled above and below water, can travel up to 40 mph and can jump 20 feet in the air, according to its official website.
Our knowledge of genetics has grown exponentially over the past century and a half. We now not only understand that specific genes are responsible for giving us certain traits, we are also learning that our likelihood to develop certain diseases and disorders also lies in our code.
B
News of these discoveries seems to be finding its way to media outlets ever more frequently, but most research has so far come from studying coding DNA, which only makes up around 2% of the human genome. Coding DNA is so named because it encodes protein sequences, and it is Lea probably the kind you are most familiar e i t a yK
with. Noncoding DNA, on the other hand, makes up the remaining percent of the human genome, and until recently, was largely thought to be “junk DNA” because so much of it has no known biological function. But John C. Aldrich (doctoral candidate) and Dr. Keith A. Maggert of the biology department at Texas A&M are working to change all of that. While doing a relatively routine study of DNA in fruit flies, Aldrich was able to find that the noncoding portion of DNA is not as static as we once thought. He was able to track these changes by adjusting an existing
Although the path to canine candidacy isn’t quite legal — county law requires those seeking office to be a citizen and registered voter — that isn’t stopping Michael Wilson, Einstein’s political adviser, from pushing the pup into politics. Wilson and other campaign supporters are asking the public to ignore county law and to cast a ballot for Einstein, who is “campaigning” for a single-payer health care system, police reform, maximum wage to limit income inequality and a longer prison sentence for wealthy offenders. “There is a legitimate reason to wonder whether a dog can serve as mayor of Oakland, but he provides a great voice for low-income and otherwise marginalized people who live in Oakland,” Wilson said in an interview with Huffington Post.
method called quantitative polymerase chain reaction (QPCR) – which amplifies DNA sequences – and adding fluorescent dye. It is quite possible that this “junk DNA” could actually play a large role in the way our genes affect our health. Or in Dr. Maggert’s words, “We know that there is hidden variation there, like disease proclivities or things that are evolutionarily important, but we never knew how to study it.” It will be exciting to see how this new frontier of genetic research helps us understand more of our biology, the diseases that plague us, and their treatment.

MSC Opas Presents: Anything Goes
By Rebecca Ramirez ALL ABOARD!
The quick-witted production, Anything Goes, is the winner of three 2011 Tony Awards, including awards for Best Musical Revival and Choreography. After its debut in 1934, Cole Porter’s first-class musical comedy is touted as one of the greatest musicals in theatre history. Anything Goes’ conception was a result of producer Vinton Freedley experiences living on a boat after escaping the US to avoid paying his debts. The original plot was a comedy about a mad bomber running loose on an ocean liner. Freedley was displeased with the original script, but found changes too difficult—and his two writers left the country and set sail on the S.S. Morro Castle. In a strange turn of events, just as rehearsals for the play were getting started, the S.S. Morro Castle caught fire on the way to its destination, killing 137 passengers, including Freedley’s writers. While still keeping the tragedy of the shipwreck intact, Freedley took the opportunity to completely revamp Anything Goes.
the scoop WHAT: ANYTHING GOES WHERE: RUDDER AUDITORIUM WHEN: OCT. 21 @ 7:30PM
Freedley’s changes set the play during the 1930s on the S.S. American, sailing from New York to England. The ship carries an unusual group of passengers, including a gangster (Moonface Martin), a wealthy debutante and her mother (Hope and Evangeline Harcourt), a nightclub singer (Reno Sweeny), and a wealthy New York businessman and his stowaway assistant (Elisha Witney and Billy Crocker). As the musical unfolds, it’s revealed that Hope is Billy's long-lost love. Unfortunately, she is now engaged to a wealthy Englishman, Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. After a series of comedic interactions, blackmail, and lots of jazz squares, everything seems to fall into place. Peppering the classic are some of musical theatre’s most memorable songs, including: “I Get A Kick Out Of You”, “You’re the Top”, and of course, “Anything Goes”. The performance will be at Rudder Auditorium October 21 at 7:30pm. Ticket prices range from $39 to $95 and can be purchased in advance at the MSC box office.

Red Wasp Film Fest By Rebecca Ramirez
The Red Wasp Film Festival has been dedicated to cultivating appreciation of film and filmmaking since 2003. Founders Carol and Craig Conlee named the festival after the red wasp because the festival was originally held during the springtime, when the little buzzers made unwelcome appearances at the event. This year’s festival will be held indoors at a new venue—the Grand Stafford Theater on Main Street in Downtown Bryan. The festival opens with a party at the Stafford on Friday, October 17; the film blocks and other entertainment will all be held on Saturday, October 18 beginning at 10am and running late into the evening. Since 2003, word of the festival has swarmed throughout Texas—making the once grassroots event a much bigger attraction than intended. This year, the festival will have four viewing blocks, along with a screening of the Nashville Film Festival winner For the Sake of the Song (followed by a panel discussion). The festival is now more than a film soirée; it’s also two days of music, poetry, and workshops. On October 17, guests will be entertained by poets from Mic Check Poetry and two Texas rockabilly bands—Two Tons of Steal and Dale Watson. Poets will be performing at 8:00pm; Two Tons of Steel and Dale Watson will take the stage following Mic Check’s performances. On Saturday, October 18, the film festivities commence. Starting at 10:00am, there will be a filmmaker workshop with Ghost Ranch Films called “The Art of the Interview Workshop for Film Makers.” After a short lunch break, film screenings will begin starting at 12:15pm. Two films screened at the festival are of note: Dead Hearts Short Film and Butterfly Girl. Dead Hearts Short Film fuses horror and fantasy into one, extremely well-shot short. Award winning writer Stephan W. Martin wrote the story about a young mortician who learns that not even death can stand between him and true love. The film has been officially selected in festivals such as Telluride, Comic Con, and Toronto After Dark. A nonfiction documentary that screened at SXSW, Butterfly Girl is a poignant film that deals heavily in inspiration and hope. In a previous Maroon Weekly interview with writer/director Cary Bell, she said, “It is not your traditional essay-format, information-based, documentary film. Butterfly Girl is about a girl, her life, and her family.” Viewers will capitulate to 18-year-old Abbie Evans’ endearing, heartwarming portrayal as she battles a rare skin disease and strives for an independent lifestyle. Trailers of the films can be found on the Red Wasp Film Festival Facebook page. Tickets can be purchased at redwasp.org/buytickets. Student tickets are $12 and general admission tickets are $15. However, Steller (founded by ex-Google, ex-VMware, and ex-Microsoft techies) is an app that allows users to compose stories with the digital media they capture. You can take your photos and videos and compile them into a story collection, one that chronicles a road trip, a family outing, or even a dining experience. Steller’s stories are like mini-documentaries, short stories that the app helps you compose via a selection of templates and fonts. “I think we’re both parts a discovery network, for finding interesting content on topics that interest you, and also a social network where you can share your stories, connect with friends and family, as well as now connect with experts and influencers you follow,” explains Jay Wilder, one of the app’s designers.

Short Term 12 Netflix (R)
The Equalizer Action (R) The Equalizer, which is currently America’s number one movie at the box office, has Denzel Washington doing what Denzel Washington does best – rescuing young women from bad men. This time he’s older; but don’t worry – he’s just as feisty as he was in his halcyon days. Hollywood’s getting boring. Nothing is really original and The Equalizer is no exception – it is the embodiment of formulaic action films, including (but not limited to) the standard slow-walk-with-an-explosion-in-thebackground. Washington’s character, Robert McCall, frequents a diner because he can’t sleep at night. He lives a quiet life and works at a hardware store (which is so convenient, because later it turns into one giant weapon). Robert’s a widower who made a promise to not return to his old lifestyle, but of course he HAS to, otherwise there would be no movie. For whatever reason, all of the bad guys are just terrible shots and let McCall disrespect the head honcho for far too long. THEN he single-handedly takes down all of the bad guys, ‘cause you know – that’s realistic. His bad guy murder spree is actually a hub of the Russian mafia; so now the higher ups get involved, including a psychopath with a myriad of prison tats. Charming. Oh, and there’s a rogue cop; can’t forget about that action film cliché, as well. Geez Louise--there is so much gratuitous violence. So much. To boil it down, this movie is good for sitting in the last row and making out with your partner; because when you go home and your mom asks how your date went, all you have to say is, “Oh, you know--it was just another Denzel movie. The good guys win in the end.” The Equalizer is 131 minutes and rated R for strong bloody violence and language throughout, including some sexual references.

Grace (Brie Larson, 21 Jump Street) is a 20-something counselor who works at a facility for at-risk teenagers. While explaining the ins-andouts of the ward to a new counselor, one of the teenagers busts out of the door, running for the fence. Everything is put on hold; coffee is hastily thrown down – the charges can’t be touched after leaving a foot from the facility. It’s chaotic, but it’s part of the life. Grace and her colleagues do what they can to bond with the kids, but the wounds brought into the facility are often times too deep to heal. A new charge, Jayden (Kaitlyn Dever, The Spectacular Now), is checked into the facility right as Grace learns she’s pregnant and prepares to marry her long-term boyfriend and coworker Mason (John Gallagher Jr. Jonah Hex). Though originally one of the more difficult and gruff teenagers at the home, Jayden and Grace form an unlikely bond over similar aspects of their lives: none of which are pretty. Short Term 12 is quite the emotional roller coaster. Grace and Jayden’s relationship reveals that there is so much more to people than what meets the eye: at one point, Grace lowers her sock to show her own self-inflicted scars from her past. Keith Stanfield (Purge: Anarchy) delivers an amazing performance as Marcus, a charge whose been at the facility since he was 15 and is about to reach his 18th birthday – and be dismissed from the facility’s care. There’s so much turmoil – from his home life to his own fear of what he’ll become after he leaves. Writer/director Destin Daniel Cretton did a phenomenal job with this film. Cretton originally created Short Term 12 as a short film, which was released in 2008. Recreating (and dramatically altering) its content, it was released as a feature-length film in 2013, and subsequently won the Grand Jury Award and Audience Award at SXSW – which it deserves. This film was stellar in all aspects: cast, cinematography, writing – basically the anti-Equalizer. Short Term 12 is 96 minutes and rated R for language and brief sexuality.

Aggies Return to Where It All Began ll

Football November 10, 2012 is a date every Aggie will remember for the rest of their lives. #15 Texas A&M went to Tuscaloosa and defeated the #1 ranked team in the country. Johnny Manziel virtually won the Heisman that day, and Aggie football was changed forever. A team that wasn’t expected to compete in the SEC just beat the conference powerhouse en route to an 11-2 season, a Cotton Bowl victory, and a top 5 finish.

The Aggies return to Alabama this Saturday for the CBS game of the week, but it’s not expected to reach the hype that last year’s “Game of the Century” did. Both teams have already endured failures this season but the winner is still in line to do heavy damage in the SEC.
A&M scored twice in the final 19 minutes, with the game winner coming in the 79th minute to take down Ole Miss. A week later, they hosted #6 Florida in a heavyweight bout that saw the Aggies fall short after allowing a goal with only six minutes left in regulation. The Aggies rebounded from the loss to Florida to upend Kentucky in the 90th minute of the game with a game winner from Bianca Brinson. The win against Kentucky was the 200th win at Ellis Field. Despite the close calls, the Aggies only have one loss in SEC play with five games remaining.
The win demanded A&M’s respect by its new conference peers. The year before – A&M’s last season in the Big 12 – the team had a reputation of not being able to finish games. The Aggies blew multiple halftime leads to go from a top 10 team to un-ranked by season’s end. The secondhalf debacles cost head coach Mike Sherman his job, and the Aggies were expected to get pounded in their first year in the “big boy conference.” Alabama fought back from a 21 point deficit and was sitting near the goal line with a chance to take the lead late in the fourth quarter. The Aggie faithful feared another loss. But when Deshazor Everett picked off AJ McCarron, the Aggies secured the upset. The win changed the mindset of what people thought of Texas A&M.
biting endings they’ve had recently, the break was needed.
Volleyball The Aggies continue a surprising season. Currently ranked #19 in the nation, the Aggies are climbing the SEC rankings and are among the league leaders in the stat department.
Soccer The #10 Aggies have gotten a little bit of a break lately, playing only three games in a span of two weeks. After all the nail-
The Aggies lead the league in hitting percentage, outhitting high-powered Florida. Junior Shelby Sullivan is first in the conference in hitting percentage and is joined by sophomore Jazzmin Babers and junior Angela Lowak in the top 10 in that category. That trio is also among the top 10 in kills in the SEC and the team places second in that department. Freshman sensation Stephanie Aiple is top five in two categories: assists and aces.
