An Interview with Twenty One Pilots Drummer Josh Dun By Drew Knight

Ohio hometown heroes twenty one pilots are still reveling in the whirlwind success of their debut album Vessel. Since its release in 2013, the duo has played sold-out shows and festivals across the nation. Frontman Tyler Joseph and drummer Josh Dun are bringing their hip-hop infused, deepyet-danceable, indie-electronica to the heart of Aggieland on Wednesday, Oct. 22 for a free show thanks to a partnership with Yahoo! On the Road and MSC Town Hall. Dun took some time out of his busy schedule to chat with Maroon Weekly about what makes twenty one pilots tick, their high-energy live shows, and what to expect from the band in the future. MW: If you could suggest one song to someone who might not have ever heard a twenty one pilots song, what would you tell them to listen to first? Dun: I think it kind of depends on who it is. I think if it’s a friend, I’m probably gonna show them “Ode to Sleep”, just because I think they’ll probably know and understand me a little bit better--and Tyler--and what it is we’re kind of going for. If it was with a stranger, I’d probably show them a song called “Holding Onto You”, because I think it’s a little bit easier to digest for someone who’s never heard of us. And that was the song we chose as our first single, as well--kind of for the same reasons. I think that one’s a little bit easier to grasp than maybe some of the other ones, and I think it encompasses a lot of the different things we’re trying to do in a manageable sense. MW: I’ve been a fan of twenty one pilots for a couple years and I’ve never actually known why you call yourselves twenty one pilots. Is there a story behind the name? Dun: The name comes from a play that was written by

Arthur Miller that’s basically about a guy and his family. For his occupation, the guy manufactured and distributed airplane parts for the war that was happening at the time, and somewhere along the line, he realized these parts were faulty. He was kind of faced with this decision: Do I recall these parts and end up potentially shutting down the business and have this huge life change, or do I send the parts out, risk it, and see what happens. So he ended up sending out the parts, and, as a result, 21 pilots died. And at the end of the play, he ends up committing suicide. None of that sounds happy or great at all, but the way that we use that in our daily lives, and the decisions we have to make as a band (and we’ve honestly sort of referred to this a lot)--every choice that you make ends up having a consequence in one way or another; whether that’s minutes later, or whether that’s years down the line. And it is interesting because we’ve kind of made decisions based off of that principle. And to be honest, I don’t know

MW: Stylistically, a majority of your songs are upbeat and danceable, yet lyrically, the subject matter can get into some powerful topics. One of my favorite lyrics is in your song “Migraine” is “Sometimes to stay alive you gotta kill your mind.” Can you explain the thought process behind pairing deep lyrics with upbeat music? Dun: Yeah! Well, I think that both of us have wrestled with deep topics or thoughts, or maybe dark thoughts even. Sometimes, we can all be haunted by the nighttime or, you know, a lot of the music you listen to on the radio kind of talks about the nighttime. And in a way, that’s kind of lighthearted in the mindset at a party or just something that’s distracting from the normal thoughts we all kind of battle with. I think it’s important to talk about the things that are a struggle, or maybe depressing, that we don’t like to discuss quite as much. But then the only problem with that is that when you do kind of get into that you do start looking into darker sounding music; and it doesn’t really put you in a frame of mind that necessarily helps with that mindset.

“I think I just want to encourage people to think a little bit deeper than just what’s on the outside of getting through life, and maybe start to discover the process of maybe what your purpose is here. - JOSH DUN, TWENTY ONE PILOTS if we’d be exactly where we are today if we hadn’t referred to that logic or line of thinking. So that’s essentially where the band name came from.

pg 4 • MAROON WEEKLY • Oct. 22, 2014 • maroonweekly.com

So I think that we’ve both grown up on music that is very likable and danceable and upbeat and happy sounding. I think that if you combine the two, then you're able to talk

about real things in songs rather than just kind of nothing, but also have it sort of relatable and enjoyable, maybe for somebody who wants to hear that kind of music but maybe wants to think. That’s just the approach that we took and that we enjoy, and that’s kind of the approach that we’re going to continue. And that’s not to say that there are not going to be darker or slower-sounding songs, but I think to combine the two was just an interesting thing for us. I think I just want to encourage people to think a little bit deeper than just what’s on the outside of getting through life, and maybe start to discover, or at least begin to discover, the process of maybe what your purpose is here. And that’s a heavy topic, and I know not everybody battles with it. But we constantly distract ourselves, whether it's with music or movies or just constant entertainment--even if it's just with Twitter or Instagram or just burying ourselves in our phones. I think it’s important to set aside time and to really dive in and think about why it is that we’re here. MW: I know from experience that you guys really “bring it” on stage; Tyler climbs everything, you do back flips. Have you ever had any close calls with getting injured or getting asked not to come back to a venue? Dun: Hah! Well, knocking on wood, there haven’t really been any major injures so far. There have been some issues we’ve had, like with stage managers, especially at festivals or people that are pretty against the climbing thing. There was a time where Tyler started climbing a scaffolding and there was a stage manager who actually started climbing up behind him and grabbed his leg and started pulling him down, which, in my mind, I think is a little bit more dangerous than just letting him go. So, there have definitely been some complaints and concerns with the whole climbing thing. But Tyler’s one of the best climbers I know, so I have full faith that he’s gonna be fine. MW: How’d you learn to flip like that?

Curtis Grimes @ The Tap By Eunice De Luna

Dun: When Tyler and I first started playing music together, we were playing some small, little show and it was in a carpeted gymnasium, but they had those gymnast pads. So we got those out, and we were just trying to kill some time, and I started backflipping off the stage. We had a couple of hours, so I spent about 30 or 40 minutes practicing this backflip and so I finally kind of got it, and it was at that point where I was just like,“I kind of wanna do this during a show.”

The Voice contestant Curtis Grimes was eliminated after eight weeks on the show but became a winner in the Texas music scene almost immediately. Being on the show opened up new opportunities for the country star. Since the show, he’s released three albums and was named “New Male Vocalist of the Year” in 2014 by the Texas Regional Radio Music Awards.

So at our first big hometown show, we rehearsed for that a couple weeks, and probably 70 percent of the time that we were rehearsing it was me practicing backflips off of the piano. And the first time I ever did it live was at that show, so it was nerve-racking. It was the second song that we even did in the set and I was like, “If I don’t land this, or if I land and break my leg, then that’s it--thanks everybody for coming. There’s one and a half songs, and I’m gonna go to the hospital!”

From Gilmer, Texas, Grimes grew up listening to George Strait and Alan Jackson, both inspiring him to stick to a more traditional country sound. He attended Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana on a baseball scholarship; a promising baseball star, he decided to take a different road and pursue his dream of singing and songwriting.

MW: So your latest album, Vessel, came out in 2013 and you guys are building up a lot of steam. “Holding Onto You” already has over 10 million views on YouTube, plus you’re selling out shows across the nation. What can we expect from twenty one pilots in the future? Dun: It’s been really crazy since that album came out (and really even before then). We’ve just kind of been nonstop on the road, probably for about three years now. So we’re in the middle of a world tour I guess, finishing up in the U.S. and then heading over to Europe for a few weeks. After that, we’re gonna go into the studio and focus all of our attention and time on dialing in a new album, because I think people, and especially us, are ready for some new songs. As soon as that comes out, we plan to hit the road and do it all again. And we’re more excited than ever to have some new songs and material to play and some new ideas for our live shows and hopefully some new stunts. So we definitely have some ideas, and I’m really excited to be in the studio and back on the road live.

With a guitar bought from a pawnshop, Grimes taught himself how to play and started playing at small venues, bars, and frat parties. While playing at a bar in Austin, he won a contest to open for Kenny Chesney at one of his shows, thus cementing his decision to pursue music full time. Grimes is currently on tour and will be coming to The Tap, Thursday, October 23. Tickets can be purchased at the Tap for $10. The show starts at 10pm.

The band released their first album in 2008, Road of Life, and achieved lukewarm success. Their second album, Firewater, released in 2011 was the album that launched their ship, debuting at #30 on the Billboard Top Country albums. The record still continues to sell to this day, with its third single “Anna Marie” reaching #1 on the Texas Music Charts.

Camera-equipped camel launches Google’s Street View in Abu Dhabi desert

Queen Victoria’s silk undergarments sell at auction for £6,200

LIWA OASIS, Abu Dhabi – In the deserts of Abu Dhabi, one camel named Raffia has more than just humps on her backs – she has cameras.

FOLKESTONE, Kent – With an impressive 52-inch waist, a pair of Queen Victoria’s silk bloomers have sold at a British auction for £6,200, or about $9,860.

Much like the Google cars you see driving around town with towering cameras attached to their hoods, the 10-year-old camel was equipped with one of Google’s Street View cameras to capture panoramic shots of the desert surrounding the Liwa Oasis in Abu Dhabi.

The knee-length knickers sold with a pair of her silk stockings. Also on the auction block was a petticoat with a 66-inch bust worn by the queen, Britain’s longest serving monarch.

Google has spoken about Raffia, saying she is the first animal the company has used to capture images, and they said that using her was the “most authentic” way of taking the photographs. To capture the images, a local guide leads Raffia into the desert in the early hours of the morning, which is the quietest time of the day with the clearest weather. Similar to all Street View images, the photos are digitally morphed together to create a virtual world where Google users can travel to the deserts of Abu Dhabi from the comforts of their own couches.

Police arrest teenage clown after reports of many terrorizing Calif. county SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY, Calif. – Police have arrested a 14-year-old boy in connection to a cluster of clowns terrorizing residents of the San Joaquin valley. Police said the teen was arrested on charges of annoying a minor after scaring a neighborhood child on Thursday night. This disturbance was just one of 20 reports from Kern County in the past week of clowns scaring children, some of which have been reported to be wielding guns, machetes, and baseball bats. But this clownish prank doesn’t have the Bakersfield Police Department laughing, as they fear the trend could escalate into violence. “We will make arrests on this. We want this to stop,” Bakersfield Police Sgt. Joseph Grubs said in an interview with the L.A. Times. The teenager claimed to be copying the “Wasco clown,” which appeared on Instagram as part of a couple’s year-long art project. The eerie image showed a clown holding balloons on a poorly lit Wasco, California street.

Queen Victoria held the throne for 63 years, from 1837 until her death in 1901. “The items are very large. She wore them towards the end of her life when she had eaten a lot more than most people could afford to,” said auctioneer Michael Hogben. “The bloomers are from about 1890. When Queen Victoria died, she gave a lot of her underlinen to her loyal servants.” The garments had been held by a Kent family for more than 80 years. They were proven authentic because they featured the queen’s emblem and the laundry batch number 36. The buyers of the pricey panties wished to remain anonymous.

New Inhalant Might Bolster Immune System

Researchers have recently begun human clinical trials with a new drug at Plumotect, Inc. – a biotech company in Houston. The drug, known as PUL-042, was initially designed to treat respiratory infections, specifically in cancer patients who are significantly more vulnerable to respiratory infections while undergoing chemotherapy treatment. However, the drug also has the potential to positively affect human health on a global scale. PUL-042 was developed by researchers at the

Texas A&M Health Science Center (TAMHSC) and University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and was originally intended to help prevent cancer patients from developing pneumonia. It works by stimulating the body’s own immune system and strengthening its front-line defenses--namely the lungs--against diseases by safeguarding against bacterial, fungal, and viral pathogens. Once inhaled, PUL-042 helps bolster the patient’s immune system for three to four days. Testing will help determine dosing and tolerance in humans, including repeated doses.

Dr. Magnus Hӧӧk, a professor at TAMHSC and a co-founder of Plumotect, believes PUL-042 “has the potential to alter our vulnerability to deadly epidemics and bioterror threats.” Imagine a world where we no longer have to fight the flu or the common cold with armaments of medicine; instead, we could avoid getting them in the first place. With sick-season right around the corner, you can bet we’re wishing it was already out on the market. Unfortunately we’ll have to wait around 4 to 5 years before it makes a public appearance, contingent on how human trials go of course.

Hoodie Allen

Steven Markowitz – more commonly known by his stage name, Hoodie Allen – isn’t anything like your stereotypical rap star. Markowitz graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2010 with a degree in marketing and finance. With his degree, Markowitz landed a job at Google working as an account executive. Although his career was set in stone, Markowitz had a hidden talent and a desire to perform. He would work a full day, and after coming home at 6pm, he would write music, answer fan mail, and schedule shows until 2am. He was living a double life: Steven Markowitz, the Google employee by day; Hoodie Allen, rap artist by night.

After Markowitz decided to take leave from Google and pursue his music career full time, Hoodie Allen took off. In 2012, his album All American was number 10 on the Billboard’s Top Albums chart and, remarkably, he did it all on his own record label.

PKT maintains Allen’s carefree vibe and is largely about relationships, believing in yourself, and not listening to haters. Within the span of a month, Hoodie has already released three music videos for his strongest songs off the album: “Movie”, “Act My Age”, and “Dumb For You.” Available on Spotify, Google Play, iTunes, and Amazon.

Los Angeles DJ Dillon Francis first received recognition after collaborating with American producer Diplo on the song “Que Que”. From there he went on to produce “Masta Blasta”, a popular moombahton track (moombahton is a subgenre of house music fused with reggae) that launched his career. Named one of MTV Clubland’s artists to watch, Francis released his first EP, Swashbuckler, under Play Me Records in 2010. In 2012, he became the first moombahton artist to achieve a #1 spot on the Beatport releases. Since then, he’s been touring and has performed at several popular festivals. Francis is releasing his first album, Money Sucks, Friends Rule, on October 28. In support of his new release, he kicked off a tour this past February. You can pre-order the album on iTunes and instantly receive two songs.

Old Boots, New Dirt is the sixth studio album by American country music artist Jason Aldean. Its lead single, “Burnin’ It Down”, reached the top of the US Hot Country Songs chart during its second week of release. The album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200. It is Aldean’s second album to reach number one on the chart, following 2012’s Night Train. Old Boots, New Dirt shows that Aldean isn’t afraid to take risks. In “Burnin’ It Down”, the song opens with a hip hop interlude, an electronic beat, and synthesized piano before charging down the country road. “Old Boots, New Dirt”, with its traditional, twangy electric guitar backed by a soft organ, is a foot-tapping hit that brings out the best in Aldean’s rustic, signature voice. Old Boots is unique in the sense that it isn’t really just a country album. Like others in the market lately, Aldean is crossing genres with more confidence and he’s not afraid to mix it up.

By Kate Williams Get a kick out of poking fun at politics? See The Capitol Steps at Rudder on October 28 at 7:30pm and witness a witty, biting satire of Congress on stage. The musical’s goal is to poke fun at the system, leaving no political figurehead off limits. The comical song and dance began as a group of Senate staffers whose goal was to satirize the people and places that employed them. Starting in December 1981, the group first threw something together as casual Christmas party entertainment. Now, with a much larger cast and growing popularity, The Capitol Steps has expanded and performs every Friday and Saturday night at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington D.C. The team travels the country now, visiting college campuses and event venues across the nation. More information about the cast at capsteps.com/about, and tickets are available for purchase online, at the MSC Box Office, or by phone at (979) 845-1234.

Rubber Fury Action (R) World War II is a favorite for filmmakers. Saving Private Ryan, Pearl Harbor, Inglorious Basterds, Downfall, and Schindler’s List – they’re fan favorites, but let’s face it: there’s only so much you can do with a historical war film. Fury is a little different… but not by much. Set in Germany right before the end of the war, Fury is the name of a tank headed by Sgt. Don “Wardaddy” Collier (Brad Pitt, Inglorious Basterds). His crew is comprised of Boyd “Bible” Swan (Shia LaBeouf, Transformers), Trini “Gordo” Garcia (Michael Peña, Cesar Chavez), and Grady “Coon-Ass” Travis (Jon Bernthal, Mob City). The crew has been together since a tour North Africa, and while a hodge-podge mix of men, their experiences have bonded them and they refuse to fight with anyone else. Joining their crew is Norman Ellison (Logan Lerman, Noah), a typist-turned-solider who has no idea what he’s doing. He’s significantly younger than the rest of the crew, and they don’t give him any slack. Ellison’s first order of business is to clean up the carnage that was left of his predecessor, and after seeing half-a-face against the metal, he promptly pukes. Not soon after, Ellison freezes after having the opportunity to take out a Nazi soldier, resulting in an attack on an Allied tank and killing the people inside. Not a great start. Eventually he’s forced to kill, and it becomes easier for Ellison to do his job; he becomes a killing machine (earning him the nickname “Machine”). After being sent on a mission with four other tanks, Fury is the last one standing. On their way back to camp, they run over a mine and the tank track is broken. While in the middle of fixing it, Ellison is sent to keep watch and he discovers an SS-branch heading in the direction of his fellow soldiers. The five Allies refuse to abandon their post and take on 300-some-odd Axis men. Fury isn’t as bloody as Quentin Taratino’s Inglorious Basterds, but have no fear – there’s still a ton of carnage. To differentiate the war film from its predecessors, Ayer uses special effects for machine power that’s reminiscent of Star Wars light sabers. It’s a little cheesy at first, but it’s easy to get used to. Fury has an all-star cast and Lerman’s portrayal was phenomenal – he’s well on his way to becoming one of the most talented actors in Hollywood. Fury is bloody and violent but has heart-warming, comedic moments that help put the audience at ease. As far as World War II movies go, Ayer doesn’t present a new concept, but executes an old one well. Fury is 134 minutes and rated R for strong sequences of war violence, some grisly images, and language throughout.

Netflix (R) What’s Halloween without scary movies about killer tires?! Am I right, or am I right? Let’s talk about Rubber (I’M NOT EVEN KIDDING: THAT’S THE NAME). Where to start… The film takes place in California in the ‘90s where a tire magically comes to life. Yes. A tire comes to life. Taking its first baby steps (rolls? baby rolls?), the tire comes across a plastic water bottle. He (I don’t know what gender this thing is) hesitates briefly and then crushes it. Inspired, the tire comes across a scorpion and smushes it. Not long after, the tire tries to run over a beer bottle, but is unable to crush the glass. BUT DON’T WORRY – the tire has psychokinetic powers. After vibrating, the bottle fractures. But that’s not enough. The tire makes a tin can explode and then finds an innocent rabbit and blows it up, too. Because, you know, why not? Unable to be satiated by scorpions and rabbits, the tire sets its sights (how does this even work?! I don’t know – just go with it) on larger prey. Initially, the tire sees a woman drive by and he attempts to use its powers on her but only succeeds in making her car stall. While stalking the stalled woman, a truck comes by and runs the tire over, breaking the “chase” between the tire and her car. A sigh of relief, and she’s able to drive off. Frustrated beyond belief (poor tire), it explodes a crow, finds the truck that ran it over, and uses its powers to make the driver’s head explode. Now it’s on the run from the police. (Guys, this is a real movie.) However, it ends up getting distracted by car racing on television. The police rig a mannequin with dynamite with the idea that the tire will explode the mannequin and detonate the explosives, killing the tire. But things don’t go as planned, and the tire destroys the mannequin’s head...without the dynamite exploding. Irate, a police officer shoots the tire AND KILLS IT... but after he leaves, the tire becomes reincarnated as a small tricycle. It then recruits several tires and rolls to Hollywood. Rubber was made for Halloween. It’s terrible, but it’s that kind of terrible you want to watch. It’s a French film but spoken in English, and with a name like Rubber, you can’t go wrong. (Actually, all of it is wrong.) It’s a B movie, so don’t be surprised that it’s so charmingly awful.

Aggies Announce Texas Heavy 2015 Schedule By

Football Though this year isn’t over, it’s never too early to look at next year. The 2015 football schedule was announced last week, and at first look, it looks quite nice for a team that will have high aspirations. The Aggies open the season in Houston against Arizona State on September 5 for the Advocare Texas Kickoff; and the team won’t have an outof-state game until October 24 at Ole Miss. Keeping with tradition (what Ags do best), there will be another neutralsite game as they continue the Southwest Classic against Arkansas at AT&T Stadium. Texas A&M will open the season at a completely renovated Kyle Field against Ball State on September 12. The Aggies will play seven home games that include Alabama (Oct. 17), South Carolina (Oct. 31), and Auburn (Nov. 7). A&M only has three true road games. Along with Ole Miss, the Aggies travel to Vanderbilt on November 21 and end the season at LSU on November 28. Soccer The Aggies are nearing the end of the regular season as they continue to hold on to the second spot in the SEC with Georgia nipping at their heels. Florida, who shut
