The Flaming Lips

The old adage “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it” could probably apply to two of the Beatles most venerated albums: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and The White Album. Even Pitchfork Media rates Sgt. Pepper’s a 10 out of 10—and that’s extremely rare for those guys. You just don’t make songs like “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” better than the original, and if you try, you better keep it to YouTube. The Flaming Lips probably didn’t get this memo. With a Little Help is The Flaming Lips fourteenth studio album—a track-by-track cover album of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Album: With a Little Help from My Fwends

Release Date: Oct. 28, 2014

They take on “Lucy in the Sky”, and on their version, they collaborated with Miley Cyrus and Moby. It’s...quite a rendition. The chorus explodes into charged, on-the-verge-of-dubstep, fuzzed-out distortion with singer Wayne Coyne and Hannah Montana singing in unison. The singing isn’t bad; but the interpretation of the song might have the Church of Beatles yelling blasphemy. The single was released in May, and Coyne says there was no plan to do the entire album. But after some prodding, and after recruiting a number of supporting artists (My Morning Jacket, Dr. Dog, Phantogram, Tegan and Sara, and many more), the Lips took on the Beatles.

Scottish DJ and record producer Calvin Harris is releasing his fourth studio album via Columbia Records, Tuesday, November 4. Motion follows Harris’ successful third album 18 Months, which featured hits “I Need Your Love”, “Sweet Nothing”, “Feel So Close”, and “Let’s Go”. His fourth album, Motion features collaborations with famous DJ’s like R3hab, Alesso, and superstars Ellie Goulding, Big Sean, and Gwen Stefani. The first single, “Summer”, a dance-club love song with piano and synthesized techno, charted #1 in UK and Ireland. Since then, he’s released several other singles, such as “Blame” featuring English singer John Newman, “Slow Acid”, a traditional house song reminiscent of 90’s rave parties, and a break-up song featuring Ellie Goulding’s beautiful voice on “Outside.”

American hip hop duo El-P and Killer Mike, better known as Run the Jewels, are dropping their next album Run the Jewels 2 via Mass Appeal Records on October 27. Before they were a duo, El-P produced Killer Mike’s successful album R.A.P. Music, and later collaborated on El-P’s track “Tougher Colder Killer”. In 2013, they decided to join forces and released their first album titled Run the Jewels as a free digital download. Their highly anticipated sophomore album includes 12 songs and features their signature funky, techno, deep bass-driven break beats and speedy verbal flow. In addition to the album release, they’ll also remixed the original with nothing but cat meows and will be titled Meow The Jewels. El-P is actually holding cat auditions for the album.

Sweet and devastatingly dramatic, Zella Day’s somber new self-titled EP forces listeners to retreat within themselves and search the contents of their hearts. “Compass” showcases the artist’s ability to hit the high notes while describing her loyalty to her lover. Other songs ruminate in sad melodies with vulnerable lyrics. Day appeals to folks who listen to Lorde, LIGHTS or Tove Lo. Her voice also resembles Dia Frampton in more ways than one. Originally from Pinetop, Arizona, Zella was raised above the Phoenix Valley surrounded by Sitgreaves National Forest and an Apache Reservation. With her parents owing the only coffee shop with live music for miles, Z grew up surrounded by talented musicians. Now living in L.A., she does an excellent job incorporating her Arizona roots with trends in West Coast electronic music.

Torchy’s

Aggieland has been waiting for these tacos since word got out they were coming to town last May. The anticipation is finally over: Torchy’s is here. In order to see what the hype was about, the marketing interns at Maroon Weekly decided to take a late lunch break at Torchy’s. After scouring the area for a parking spot, we were greeted by fun ‘90s music and a friendly staff once we made it inside. The line was so long we were warned we were creating a fire hazard. We waited in line for about twenty minutes before we could get to the counter; it took another ten minutes to get our food--which isn’t bad for such a popular, recently-opened chain. For the most part, we all agreed the tacos were delicious, albeit a little lukewarm due to the sheer number of orders they must have had in the kitchen. Each intern got a different item off the menu, and we scored Torchy’s at A-. Read the full review at maroonweekly.com.

HURRICANE HARRY’S By Kate Williams Celebrate Halloween night with some good ole’ Texas country at Harry’s. Josh Abbott Band and Sam Riggs and The Night People will be performing this Friday at 9pm. Tickets are $15. The honky-tonkin’ Halloween party will also award $1,000 to the best costume, so put on spooky/funny/sexy get-ups and compete for the grand prize. Originally from Lubbock, Josh and the band attended Texas Tech University. All members of the same fraternity, JAB came together and recorded one of their first hits, “Taste”, in 2007 and began touring the following year. Their sophomore album, She’s Like Texas, was released in 2010 and made it onto the Top Country Album charts. Singles like “Oh Tonight” and “Touch” put the band on the map and solidified Abbott’s goal of being one of the biggest bands in the Texas music scene. “I did an interview for a Lubbock news station in late 2007,” says Abbott, “back when we first started hitting the road, and the reporter asked me, ‘Where do you want to be in five years?’ And I just looked at him and said, ‘I want to be one of the biggest bands in Texas music.’

Ray Wylie Hubbard mentored Riggs, and it’s discernible in the band’s style and songwriting. “Your audience is like a dreamer,” says Riggs, “and the last thing you want to do is wake a dreamer. We try to draw them in with our music and keep them entranced in that dream.”

Police say woman was arrested after getting caught in ex’s chimney

Canadian family finds more than 100 snakes infesting home

VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. – Getting over your ex does not mean climbing above their roof … and then sliding down their chimney.

SASKATCHEWAN, Canada – A family near the town of Regina got a slithery surprise when they discovered more than 100 snakes were hiding in their country home. A local wildlife shelter responded to the family’s call and said they first found globs of garter snakes in their stone basement and even more slithering around in the home’s many cracks and crevasses. Megan Lawrence, the director of the wildlife center, said they were found all over the house. “They were in tight spaces: Cracks in the floors, cracks in the walls, between boxes, underneath things – anywhere they could get into,” she said. Animal handlers from the shelter said they and had to use pillowcases and buckets to trap and transport the snakes. They reported the largest one captured was about threefeet long, while the shortest was about 22 centimeters. The Royal Saskatchewan Museum’s Head of Research and Collection said they get a lot of calls this time of year due to the snakes seeking warmth in time for winter.

Take a lesson from 30-year-old Genoveva Nunez-Figueroa, who police say was arrested Oct. 19 after climbing into a man’s chimney and getting stuck for more than two hours.

Unidentified Object Seen Darting Across the Moon YouTuber Crow Tripplehorn, who shoots high-definition videos through an eight-inch telescope, posted eye-catching footage of a strange object zipping across the lunar surface in early October. Moon experts were quick to explain the cause of the object as just your typical satellite, but Tripplehorn speculates that this object is unusual because it doesn’t follow the normal characteristic of a satellite orbiting Earth: It doesn’t move in a straight line. Former FBI Special Agent Ben Hansen responded, saying “I see nothing to indicate that the object was computer generated. Having said that, the video also lacks anything that would have me believe the object is something other than a conventional satellite.” Yet Tripplehorn’s YouTube page pledges to “never run deceptive or misleading clips on [his] channel.” A UFO can be defined as any object in the sky that cannot be identified.

The Huffington Post reports that a neighbor heard the suspect crying at about 5:45 a.m. and called the police. A rescue squad then arrived to dismantle the chimney, lubricate her with soap, and help her escape, the Post reports. KABC TV reported that the woman was finally freed at about 8:15am and transported to a hospital. Once she was deemed in good condition, the suspect was arrested on suspicion of illegal entry and giving false information to police, NBC Los Angeles reports. The homeowner told reporters that he was not home during the incident and that he had met the woman online. He said he broke things off after six dates and that this was actually her second attempt.

Elephants: Nature’s Best Weather Forecasters Texas weather is notorious for being unpredictable. It’s been said that we can go from shorts-weather to freezing temperatures in the course of a day. I’m sure we’ve all been caught in one of those sudden rainstorms that creep in on us when we least expect it. Well, that sort of thing would never happen to an elephant – they can hear a storm coming from 150 miles away! a Oliver Frauenfeld of Texas A&M’s geography department has been working in conjunction

tie Le

By Ka

with researchers at the University of Virginia, the University of Utah, and the University of New South Wales to study elephant herds in southern Africa. The team placed GPS trackers on members of 14 different herds, which allowed them to follow their movements for seven years. The rainy season in this part of Africa begins very suddenly and ends almost as quickly, spanning only a few short weeks. Researchers found that the elephants were able to detect changes in weather patterns in days--even weeks--in advance.

While Frauenfeld says they don’t yet “know if they can actually hear the thunder or if they are detecting other low-frequency sounds generated by the storms that humans can’t hear, there is no doubt they know what direction the rain is”. This information could one day play an important role in conservation efforts. If the migration movements of herds can be better understood, wildlife officials will be able to predict herd locations with greater accuracy, allowing them to provide elephants with more protection from poachers.

Deloris Van Cartier is a wannabe diva who performs at the Philadelphia night club her gangster boyfriend Curtis Shank manages. Curtis lies to Deloris about meeting with a record producer, and in her frustration, she breaks up with him and decides to leave to pursue her dreams of stardom. Not long after, Deloris sees Curtis murder a suspected “squealer.” Shank sees her and orders his goons to kill her as well. In disbelief, Deloris runs to the nearest police station and tells the desk sergeant, Eddie Souther, an old high school friend of hers. Souther decides that the only way she can be kept safe is by going into witness protection. They place in her in the last place Shank will ever think of looking: a convent. When she arrives, a skeptical Mother Superior explains all the rules: no contact with the outside world, no smoking, drinking, or wearing inappropriate clothing. Deloris is less-than-pleased with the regulations but sticks to them anyway. However, life in the convent proves harder than imagined. Deloris manages to break all the rules, and as punishment, she is forced to join the choir. In the Broadway smash-hit, Deloris helps the nuns find their voices in a less than glamorous world, all while discovering herself along the way. Broadway star Kerissa Arrington makes her national tour debut starring as Deloris Van Cartier. Sister Act will be performed in Rudder Auditorium, Wednesday, November 5. The show starts at 7:30pm and tickets can be purchased at the MSC box office.

Books BY RACHEL PICKERING

The Innovators focuses on the people behind the computer and Internet revolution today and yesterday. Technology plays a major role today, but not many people understand how innovation happens in the first place. Isaacson explores the past of many innovations and innovators and explores how their minds work, how they turned visionary ideas into reality. The Innovators also explores the different social and cultural forces that cultivate an atmosphere of innovation. The book begins with a profile on Ada Lovelace, who pioneered computer programming in the 1840s. Isaacson continues to explore the personalities of other people such as Vannevar Bush, John von Neumann, Doug Engelbart, Bill Gates, Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs, and Larry Page. Isaacson’s well-written history of the digital age and its predecessors is infused with humor and entertaining profiles of the key characters. The book has received both praise and criticism. One weakness is that the book does’t cover all the people that have contributed to the innovation of personal computing. Another weakness is that some of the earliest digital computers are absent. Parts of the book are slow and technical, but Isaacson provides enough for the average person to grasp in what could otherwise be difficult, jargon-riddled information. A strength of The Innovators is Isaacson’s personal interviews with some of the key players. The book is currently #3 on the New York Times Best Sellers print and e-book nonfiction list, #4 on the hardcover nonfiction list, and #2 on the e-book nonfiction.

Everyone knows that GIFs are the best way to express your emotions, but sometimes having to go through your photo stream to find a GIF to put into your messages can be a hassle. With GIF Keyboard, it not only compiles all of your GIFs into one place, it also allows you to share them straight from your texting keyboard onto your favorite messaging app. The app also allows you to save GIFs straight from your favorite websites without interrupting your browsing. But wait: there’s more. If you’re in the middle of sending a text and realize you COST: FREE need a good GIF to go with it, the app has a database of millions for you to choose from. WAZE - BY KATE WILLIAMS “For anyone looking for more reliable traffic data than Apple’s and Google’s stock maps applications, Waze is definitely worth a download,” says CNET. The app, recently acquired by Google, is sort of like a crowd-sourced traffic watcher. Anyone who has the app loaded onto their phones emits GPS data to one server that tabulates all of the driving information of it’s users.

If you’re fortunate enough not to be in that jam, and you’re driving toward it, Waze will inform you you’re about to hit traffic. It’ll also tell you if there are any road closures or accidents. A common complaint of the app is its ability to COST: FREE run down your battery while using the GPS. But that shouldn’t be an issue if you have a car charger.

Elvis Presley Exhibit @ Cushing Library By Daniella Delgado

Elvis may have left the building in 1977, but his memory lives on at Texas A&M's Cushing Library. The library is currently hosting an exhibit dedicated to Elvis called The King: Celebrating the Sara H. Lindsey Collection of Elvis Memorabilia. The exhibit will be open to the public until December 12 and is completely free. Within the collection, courtesy of Texas A&M alumnus Sara Lindsey, visitors will see pictures of Elvis throughout his life, a handkerchief used by the King himself, and his infamous volcano ring worn at the Aloha from Hawaii concert in 1973, to name a few attractions. The libary's tribute to the king is something sure to get you all shook up.

Men, Women & Children Action (R) We live in a digital age, and for better or worse, it’s here to stay. Our marriage to our phones has become our most committed relationship. But despite constant access to communication, human interaction has become awkward. Men, Women & Children is about these same ideas. The film was adapted from Chad Kultger’s novel of the same name and focuses on five high school students, their parents, and how technology has impacted their social interactions, sex lives, and self-esteem. Brandy (Kaitlyn Dever, Short Term 12) and Tim (Ansel Elgort, The Fault in Our Stars) are two loners who are able to find solace in one another. Tim’s a former football star who quit the team and now invests him time in MMO video games. His parents are divorced and he finds out through Facebook that his mother has become engaged to the man she abandoned her family for. Brandy, on the other hand, has an overbearing mother (Jennifer Garner, Dallas Buyers Club) who monitors every move Brandy makes online. Hannah (Olivia Crocicchia, Palo Alto) has dreams of stardom and loves attention. Her mother Donna (Judy Greer, Carrie) is trying to help her accomplish those dreams. However, the risqué “modeling” photos that are on Hannah’s website push away prospective agents that are looking for less scandalous talent. Allison (Elena Kampouris, Labor Day) is suffering from anorexia and often turns to pro-ana websites to help her refrain from eating. She finally garners the attention of a boy she’s had a crush on since seventh grade, although the emotional attachment is far greater on her side. He demands that they keep everything a secret, only communicating via text messages. Last is Chris (Travis Tope, Little Accidents), whose sexual preferences have been tainted by his porn habits. He’s attempting a relationship with Hannah but unable to do so because she’s unable to fulfill his fantasies. It’s a very tangled (world wide) web, and some of the repercussions have disastrous results. Men, Women & Children is extremely in-your-face; There are a lot of topics that deal in sexual matter that isn’t found in the trailer (for obvious reasons). It was a bit surprising, so be prepared going into it. Author Chad Kultger has been touted as a controversial writer, and MWC maintains his no-sugar-coated delivery; it’s gritty. We keep reading about the ramifications of our shared technology addiction, but to see it on the big screen is jarring. Are we really that absent from RL (real life)? Men, Women & Children is 119 minutes long and rated R for strong sexual content including graphic dialogue throughout-some involving teens, and for language.

The Lifeguard Netflix (R)

Leigh (Kristen Bell, Veronica Mars) works in New York as a reporter. She’s writing a story about a tiger that was chained to a furnace and eventually died as a result of dehydration. Despite being romantically attached to the editor-in-chief (who happens to be engaged to someone else), Leigh’s story is rejected from the publication. She’s left feeling confused and upset…so she does what every confused twentysomething does – she seeks the help of mom and dad. Her arrival home is a big affair: the prodigal daughter has returned. Leigh was the high school valedictorian and one of few that left home for greener pastures. She’s greeted by her childhood friends – all of whom have settled into their lives in their small town – which convinces Leigh to extend her “vacation.” Quitting her job at the publication (and her relationship with the editor), she begins working at the local pool as a lifeguard. There she meets Little Jason (David Lambert, The Fosters), a 15-year-old kid in high school. He’s cool and rebellious, and against her better judgment, the two enter into an illicit relationship. Though they try to keep it a secret, word travels in a small town and Leigh’s life takes a turn for the worst. Writer/director Liz W. Garcia (Dawson’s Creek) created a character that was easily relatable. Leigh’s intelligent–viewers are exposed to that early, first through her job as a reporter and then again when her high school friends bring up how Leigh was valedictorian. Clearly she’s intelligent and likable, but does that make her a good person? She was in a relationship with her boss even though she knew he was engaged, and she started a relationship with Little Jason, even though she really knew she shouldn’t. Garcia wrote a multifaceted character and made the audience want for Leigh to be okay in the end; even though we know what she was doing was wrong. It’s an indie film, so the pacing is a little slower – which perfectly represents Leigh’s transition from New York to her sleepy Connecticut hometown. The Lifeguard is 98 minutes long and rated R for strong sexuality, brief graphic nudity, drug use, language and a disturbing image - some involving teens.

Four Aggies Earn Mid-Season Recognition By

Football The Aggies reached their bye-week and received some good news for the first time in weeks: four Aggies were named to various Midseason All-American or All-SEC honors. The offense had two representatives as senior offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi was named a Midseason All-American by SportsIllustrated.com and CBSSports.com. He was also selected on the All-SEC midseason team. Ogbuehi is widely considered a first-round pick in next year’s NFL draft. Tyler Junior College transfer Josh Reynolds earned a spot on the All-SEC second team. The sophomore is in his first year at A&M and leads the SEC in touchdown receptions with eight. Freshman monster Myles Garrett earned first team honors on Phil Steele’s All-SEC team. The Arlington Martin defensive end has 7.5 sacks on the year, half a sack away from tying the SEC freshman sack record held by South Carolina’s Jadeveon Clowney. Finally, the special teams got in on the action as Josh Lambo was named second team All-SEC as he is 7-of8 on the year in field goals and has made all his extra points.

Soccer Texas A&M has earned a Top 10 ranking and will be looking to go back-to-back in the SEC Tournament next week in Orange Beach, Alabama. While this season has primarily been led by a group of seniors, four freshmen have drawn recognition for their play as well. Defender McKayla Paulson, forward Haley Pounds, and midfielders Mikaela Harvey and Stephanie Malherbe have been named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Midseason Freshman Top 100. Paulson was No. 8 overall, Harvey No. 33, Pounds finished No. 59, and Malherbe ends up at No. 91. A&M was one of six teams to have four or more players to the Freshman Top 100.

All-American second team while Lindy’s News placed her on their third team. Walker wasn’t the only Aggie recognized by The Sporting News, as they placed juniors Courtney Williams on their second team and Jordan Jones on their third team. Williams finished last year on the All-SEC second team and averaged 13.9 points per game. Jones finished last year as one of the nation’s best point guards as she ended the season fourth nationally in assists per game with 7.25. She was named SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year.

Women’s Basketball The Aggies are still a few weeks away from their opening matchup against DePaul on November 14 and they are already receiving some preseason recognition. A&M, which finished tied for second last year in the SEC, was picked to finish third in the conference. While that might seem a little low, the Aggies are ranked in the Top 5 in preseason polls from Athlon Sports (3), ESPN (4), SI.com (4) and Slam (5). Junior guard Courtney Walker was placed on the first team All-SEC team after averaging 15.6 points per game last year. Athlon Sports and The Sporting News placed her on their
